Thomas Prejean adopted Touch when she was just 8 weeks old. He didn’t find out the border collie mix was blind in both eyes until two years later. “She’s the smartest dog I’ve ever met in my life,” he says. “She never bumped into anything in the house.” Still, Prejean thought Touch needed a second pair of eyes. He brought home Prism, but the golden retriever quickly took advantage of Touch’s inability to see. “She would steal all of Touch’s toys, so I got a bell to put around her neck so Touch would always know where she is.” Friends started calling Prism “Jingles” because of the tinkling bell around her collar, and the name stuck. Prejean keeps his mischievous pups in line with treats, and he’s not afraid to use “ bribery, extortion and blackmail.” “I carry a bunch of treats in my pocket,” he says, “and they know that ever ything revolves around that right pocket.” —JAIME DUNAWAY-SEALE GOT A PET YOU WANT US TO FEATURE? DAIRY-ETTE Story by RENEE UMSTED
WHEN DAIRY-ETTE OPENED IN 1956, it wasn’t a classic piece of Americana. But it is now. It harkens back to a time when teenagers spent their Friday nights cruising around town with friends, when lovebirds were “going steady.” It’s a real drive-in, a place where East Dallasites have been going for generations. As cars approach 9785 Ferguson Road, their drivers anticipate the treat to come. Taste buds tingle at the thought of the juicy burgers, the ice-cold, homemade root beer, the piping hot fries. Hungry neighbors arrive at Dairy-Ette, only to find it closed. “I usually put ‘gone fishin’ on the door,” owner Bob Prinkryl says. “And we’ll be back, and then everything hopefully will get all put together again the way it’s supposed to be.” Neighbors who’ve been around a while know DairyEtte takes a vacation every summer. This year, it’s starting around Aug. 1, and the drive-in will be closed for at least two weeks. Most of the time, the burger joint is open during its posted operating hours. But sometimes, customers have shown up, not knowing it wasn’t open. “I went within the last two months or so, can’t remember the exact time of day,” neighbor Michael Haring commented on a Facebook post in June. “They were closed, but the hours posted on the window indicated that they still should’ve been open at the time.” The woman speaking on Dairy-Ette’s recorded phone message says the drive-in is open 11 a.m to 8 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and 11 a.m to 3:30 p.m. Sunday. She asks whoever’s on the other end of the line to call the restaurant before they come, just to verify it’s open. Prinkryl says at some points, he’s had to close unexpectedly because of a lack of employees able to work a given day. “That’s all getting ironed out right now,” he says.

NEIGHBOR NOTES:
“I drive by there daily and they look to be very much open.” — Kimberly Samford “We went there two Fridays ago and they were open.” — Phyllis Rankin Riddle “They usually take a week vacation closer to summer. They do this every year, not sure if that is the case.” — Fidencia Deffren “Was just there yesterday for lunch!” — James Ray Pena “It was 7 p.m. on Saturday, pulled under the awning, and they locked up. It wasn’t (the) first time it’s happened.” — Jesse Madsen

The birthday cake creation includes vanilla snow, sweet milk, strawberries and rainbow sprinkles.
Healthy desserts have been trending for a while. With dairy-free, gluten-free, organic and no-sugar-added options, there’s something for everyone. To compete with all the available goods on the market, one Lakewood neighbor had to get creative. The Snowbaby story started when founder Chrissy Kuo tried Taiwanese shaved ice. She thought it was delicious and noticed the few shops offering it in Dallas were marketing treats toward the Asian community. Doing research, she discovered that the shaved ice contains high fructose corn syrup and artificial colors and flavors. “I’m a ’90s kid. I’m totally OK with junk in our food,” Kuo says. “But whenever I started having kids, I realized, hey, you know, all this stuff that’s in our food is not very good for us.” There had to be a better, healthier option. Kuo spent a year developing the vanilla flavor. She had to test recipes and make sure the texture and consistency were perfect – creamy, refreshing and satisfying. While she was working full time and raising kids, she tested her creations at carnivals and other events to see if the treats appealed to other demographics. They did. “I started to get a following, and I was encouraged,” she says. “I’m like, OK, this is something different, and it benefits everybody because it’s actually as healthy as you say.” Kuo opened her business in Lakewood Shopping Center and called it Snowbaby. “Imagine if a snow cone and an ice cream had a baby,” she says. “It’d be a snowbaby.” Families are the main customers at the shop, but Kuo is also hoping to ramp up the catering business. She bought a used snow cone trailer on Facebook, but it was stolen right before spring break. She just got a little food truck to replace it. Customers can pick from an already-designed creation or build their own treat. The most popular creation is birthday cake, which features vanilla snow, sweet milk, fresh strawberries and natural rainbow sprinkles colored with fruit and vegetable juices. Her go-to order is the coconut snow with vanilla cake bites from Unrefined Bakery, sliced almonds and sweet milk. Snowbaby is offering seasonal flavors for summer: pineapple, lemonade, key lime and horchata. “Our mission is to provide healthier treats to feed your inner foodie,” Kuo says. “And to create memories.” Snowbaby, 6404 Gaston Ave. AUGUST 2021

Vanilla soft serve and fresh strawberries are the most popular picks at TCBY. Kids especially like the rainbow sprinkles.
TC BY h a s b e e n a L a ke w o o d dessert shop for more than 20 years. Since 2001, it’s been run by Doug Sanders. Sanders is no stranger to the frozen yogurt business. He studied a rc h i te c t u re a t Texa s Te c h b u t c h a n ge d h i s c a re e r p a t h a f te r college. Sanders headed to Durango, Colorado, where he opened a frozen yogurt shop. Eventually he moved back to Dallas. A few years later, he purchased a TCBY. He knew it was a good location, having grown up in town and graduated from Lake Highlands High School. The Lakewood location is the only remaining TCBY in Dallas, and Sanders says some customers drive 30 miles to get their hands on the frozen yogurt. Not even a pandemic could slow down demand for the

treats. Neighbors helped the TCBY see its highest revenue last year, and it’s on track to exceed that this year. “I knew it would be a good business, but nothing like it is now,” he says. S i n ce t h e e m e rge n ce of se l fserve yogurt spots, neighbors want to customize. Sanders says many customers stop by to order multiple flavors mixed with multiple toppings. By far, the most popular yogurt f l avo r i s va n i l l a . Th e re’s a l so a strong appreciation for the white chocolate mousse and coffee. Fresh strawberries are the most common toppi ngs, and k id s like rainb ow sprinkles and gummy bears. He says what sets TCBY apart is its health benefits and “fantastic flavor.” The soft serve yogurt contains seven types of live and active cultures, calcium, protein, fiber and vitamin D.
Plus, each serving contains no more than 120 calories. “I don’t think most people come in for the health aspect anyway,” Sanders says. “It’s just because it tastes great.” In addition to soft serve, TCBY has hand-scooped yogurt and sorbets. . Cakes and pies are available for special occasions. For its 40th anniversary, TCBY sold a birthday cake hand-scooped flavor. The brand also released special cups to mark the occasion. Toward the end of summer, keep an eye out for scratch cards to receive additional rewards. “I think people like being around a vibe that’s doing well,” Sanders says. “When you’ve got that many people coming in here, usually the vibe is good.” TCBY, 6402 E. Mockingbird Lane

Oraldo and Josefina Guerrero have a long history in the food industry. They both worked in restaurants in the U.S., where they met. They fell in love, got married and decided to open a business. In 1988, Josie Ice Cream & Grill opened its doors on Capitol Avenue. The idea to sell fresh fruit and complement it with ice cream was a natural move. Before she moved to the U.S., Josefina had her own

fruit stand and juicery in her home country of El Salvador. Josie moved to Fitzhugh Avenue about three and a half years ago. The Guerreros continue to own it, and their kids, including daughter Jocelyn, also work at the store. “I think a lot of our customers kind of like to sit down and enjoy with their families,” Jocelyn says. “Ice cream to go is kind of weird.” The business does serve food,
like pupusas and tacos. But most people come in for dessert. Ice cream, banana splits and milkshakes are typical finds in dessert shops. But many of Josie’s offerings are less common. They’re homemade, traditional Latin American desserts. The drinks satisfy a variety of tastes and preferences. For those who love a kick, there are rusas a n d m a n go n a d a s . They’re made with water, a little bit of sugar and fresh fruit. C o o l a n d re f re s h i n g , they come in a bunch of flavors, the most popular being mango pineapple and cucumber and lime. Oraldo particularly likes the banana and papaya. Licuados are another option. They’re similar to a milkshake, just not as thick, and they contain real fruit. Jocelyn says they’re one of the more popular orders during the summer. All of the produce is bought at Dallas Farmers Market. It’s used to make the store’s many fruitbased offerings, including fresh-pressed juice. Green, carrot and orange juices a re u s u a l l y o n h a n d , but the staff is happy to make custom drinks for guests. The Guerreros are looking for more ways to experiment with fruit. One idea is to add it as a topping on snow cones, along with condensed milk. “I think it really goes down to the roots of your everyday if you’re in Latin America,” Jocelyn says. “And we try to represent that, have a little taste of the homeland in the U.S.” Josie Ice Cream & Grill, 500 S. Lakewood Shopping Center is one of the hubs of our neighborhood. When forces threatened to alter it, neighbors banded together to preserve the fountain, the clock and the theater. Over the years, many restaurants have called the area, with its iconic architecture and central location, home. Take a look at how today’s restaurants came to be. COCK & BULL NEIGHBORHOOD PUB is one of the oldest spots in the center. It opened in 1997 in place of UPTOWN CAKERY & CAFE, which was only there for a year. In 1994, TAOS SOUTHWEST CAFE CO. opened as the first restaurant to occupy the space. Before then, 6330 Gaston Ave. was an office. SNOWBABY was the first dining space to open at 6404 Gaston Ave. It came to Lakewood in 2017, taking the place of SPORT CLIPS, which started in 2007. YOGURTLAND opened in 2019, replacing YUMILICIOUS FROZEN YOGURT. Before Yumilicious arrived in 2011, JOHN PAYNE PHOTOGRAPHY INC. was the tenant. It was the second photography studio to open in the space, with the first opening in 2001. A store called ARMHOLE took the space in 2003. MI COCINA set up a location in our neighborhood in 2012. It replaced Tex-Mex place MATT’S RANCHO MARTINEZ, which opened in 1997. UNLEAVENED FRESH KITCHEN opened for business in 2015 in the spot of another restaurant, SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS, which occupied the building on Abrams beginning in 2001. Before LAKEWOOD SMOKEHOUSE was established in 2015, there was ALI BABA MEDITERRANEAN. That restaurant had been in business
18 lakewood.advocatemag.com AUGUST 2021
since 2008. LAKEWOOD DONUT came to the shopping center in 2018, replacing DONUT PARADISE, which had been there since 2001. A catering company called DONUT.COM was there in 2000, and before then, the space was occupied by film studios. FILM LESS PHOTO was there in 1995, and FOX PHOTO leased the building in 1982. LIBERTY BURGER has been in Lakewood since 2013, and it was the first restaurant to be housed in its space. A store called CATALINA 5 G took the space in 2011, and GREEN LIVING moved there in 2003. An arcade called NICKEL RANCH was there in 1997. ROOTS MARKET AND JUICERY opened for business in 2016. It took the place of a catering company called SUPER SUPPERS, which started in 2005. FITNESS LIFESTYLE opened in 2002. SASA SUSHI has been around since 2016. The sushi bar rolled up to Gaston Avenue after JERRY’S WOOD FIRED DOGS left. Another restaurant called LAKEWOOD BAR & GRILL occupied the space starting in 1994. WAYA JAPANESE IZAKAYA came to Lakewood in 2017. It replaced THE CREEK CAFE, which came after THE PHILLY CONNECTION. EXCLUSIVE CLEANERS took the space in 2003, and ALLSTATE had the location in 2000. WATER TIGER MASSAGE THERAPIES moved into Lakewood in 1995. BLAST FROM THE PAST: 6400 Gaston Ave. was home to DIXIE HOUSE, THE BLACK EYED PEA, SUGARBACON PROPER KITCHEN and KOZY KITCHEN. COMING SOON: FAJITA PETE’S is set to open soon at 1920 Abrams Parkway.

CRYSTAL GOMEZ started experimenting with fakeouts a few years ago, after becoming vegan in 2017. “My husband started out vegan with me and fell off the wagon because he felt like he was missing something from his diet,” she says. “So he started eating meat again on the weekends.” In an effor t to lure him back to full-time plant-based life, she set out to make a better meat. G omez knew of vegan meat purveyors such as the Herbivorous Butcher in Minneapolis. She started with recipes she found on the internet and then started toying around with textures and flavors. She’s the vice president of revenue cycle for a health care company, and with extra time at home last year, she hammered out perfected recipes. T h e p r od u c t s were s u ch a h it with frie n d s and family that she turned them into a business. The Boneless Butcher sells vegan steak, ribs and jalapeño cheddar brats. They’re made mostly from seitan, which is wheat

The Boneless Butcher rents a production facility in Garland, and its products cost $11-$18 on its website a n d e v e r y w e e ke n d a t t h e D a l l a s Farmers Market, where samples are available. T hese vegan meats can also be found on gtfoitsvegan.com, at Mashup Market in Denton and at a snow cone trailer in Desoto called Snow on the Rocks, plus occasional pop-ups around town. BRYCE MURPHREE IS COOKING UP something new
CA N - D L ES Empty food jars have never smelled so good

in the kitchen, but his creations aren’t for eating. The mouthwatering smells are emitted from food-scented candles the chef makes in recycled tin cans. Murphree was in between jobs as a chef when he started making candles to give as gifts to family and friends. Unconsciously, he mixed essential oils and fragrances that smelled like the food he so often prepared in the kitchen. Customers were soon salivating over pineapple cilantro, orange chili pepper and applewood smoked bacon candles. In 2018, Murphree and his wife, Maggie, founded Gluttony Candles and started selling the products online and at local farmers markets. The couple’s booth is popular among shoppers attracted to the bright colors and unique branding. “I’m about bright colors, flavors and smells,” Murphree says. “With a can, I can color the wax, but you’re not going to see it if it’s sitting on a shelf.” Initially, Bryce made candles in empty, uncrimped cans that he bought from the store. He worried that customers might cut themselves on the sharp edges and began testing a buffer. He melted crayons and hot glue sticks in the oven, then dipped his cans in the liquid to create an eye-catching runoff that brightens the packaging and protects consumers from craggy edges. But the couple soon discovered that empty cans cost more than those with food inside. Murphree mobilized his contacts in the food industry and secured the donation of their empty canisters. When people started eating at home during the pandemic, he asked neighbors on social media to leave their used containers on his Ellsworth Avenue doorstep. Donate enough, and you may get a free candle. He also accepts cans with the food still inside. He’ll give the contents to a soup kitchen or make something from the gift. Diced tomatoes are one of the cheapest canned foods, and he’s turned contributions into free salsa for donors. “We like to give back as much as we can,” he says. In addition to using recycled materials for candle jars, Murphree makes his product with clean-burning soy wax that emits less soot than traditional paraffin wax. Soy candles also burn slower, which means they last longer. Gluttony Candles yield a burn life of up to 75 hours and are as fragrant on the last burn as they were on the first. More than 25 scents are available at any given time. The best-seller has always been the wild arugula, followed by other popular options like grapefruit mint, café latte and honey lavender. Seasonal fragrances, such as roast pumpkin and Christmas hearth, are introduced several times a year. Only two candles, campfire and boot leather, are not food scented. They are marketed toward men but appeal to anyone who enjoys earthy scents. “Everybody’s sense of smell is different and unique,” Maggie Murphree says. “They’re going to pick up different scents from every candle. Give them a whole lot of options, and you’ll have something for everybody.”

Kyle Noonan wanted Joe Leo Fine Tex Mex to look and feel like a rustic cantina, but he gave it modern updates.
KYLE NOONAN named Joe Leo Fine Tex Mex after his grandfather, Joe Leo Romero. Before he died a few years ago, he visited Noonan within a month after opening The Rustic, another concept of his. “We were running around, and I was stressed, and he was just sitting there, watching,” Noonan says. “Finally he grabbed my arm and pulled me aside. He said, ‘Hijito, look around, you are so blessed to have this in your life, and you need to take a moment every day to be grateful for what God’s given you.’ And that just is something that really stuck with me.” Noonan picked a spot at the intersection of Fitzhugh and Bennett avenues for his new restaurant. The building itself, nestled in a densely populated jungle of apartments and townhomes, was relatively new. But Noonan made some changes to the design. He wanted to emulate in the former El Bolero space a classic cantina, nothing too refined. He gave it new life with modern, bright colors. The patio, dining room, bar and outdoor smoking lounge — where the fire pit is — can accommodate nearly

250 guests. There’s an hourslong wait for a table every night. “You never want to complain about being busy because that’s the goal,” Noonan says. “But we certainly have seen a tremendous amount of support from the neighborhood so far.” For those who’d prefer to skip the wait, Joe Leo offers to-go meals. The fajita and taco packs and bulk margaritas are the most common orders. About 20 percent of the restaurant’s sales have come from takeout. The second-floor cactus club, which Noonan hoped to open in time for National Tequila Day in late July, should help with the crowding. It will provide a space for 40 guests to enjoy drinks and snacks before they get a table. That date wasn’t set in stone because the furniture supply chain is clogged. But when it opens, guests can order Everclear-spiked margaritas on Friday and Saturday nights. It’s a tradition Noonan wanted to continue, one that originated in bordertown cantinas that served extra-strong drinks to laborers at the end of a long, hard week. “It’ll be light bites and heavy drinks,” he says.
Like any good chef would, Noonan helped develop the menu by eating a lot. He wanted to avoid getting “too creative” and instead focused on perfecting the Tex-Mex basics. Neighbors have been gobbling up fajitas, the most popular item on the menu by far. Second in popularity are the golden tacos, so named for the mountain of cheese that tops a guest’s choice of chicken, beef or veggies. Popular pairings for fajitas and tacos are margaritas and Mexican martini, made with tequila, orange liqueur, agave and fresh orange and lime juice. Brunchgoers also have a place at Joe Leo. Noonan says he typically doesn’t like sweets, but he loves the tres leches pancakes, which have been a big hit. Another morning dining option is on the horizon. Breakfast tacos will be available every Saturday and Sunday starting in September. “ They should expect a lively environment, great patio, strong drinks and delicious food,” Noonan says. “And you’re probably going to need to take a doggy bag with you.” Joe Leo Fine Tex Mex, 2722 N. Fitzhugh Ave., 214.363.2699, joeleotexmex.com

The Brunch Bunch WHERE TO EAT THE MOST IMPORTANT MEAL OF THE WEEKEND Story by JAIME DUNAWAY-SEALE Photography by KATHY TRAN
32 lakewood.advocatemag.com AUGUST 2021
Breakfast bars and pre-made smoothies are for weekday mornings when you’re rushing out the door on the way to work. Indulge this weekend in a decadent brunch. No one will judge if you carb load a stack of pancakes or start drinking before 11 a.m. It’s actually encouraged. Be sure to leave hungry. You don’t have to travel far to find a trendy brunch spot in our neighborhood.
Garden Cafe
Organic ingredients from the backyard garden permeate many Garden Cafe dishes.
Customers will notice plenty of changes when Garden Cafe reopens later this month after closing for nearly a year and a half. But its bread-and-butter brunch menu will stay the same — with only the best additions. “We didn’t want to mess with brunch too much because that’s what people know us for and love us for,” owner Mark Wooton says. “We never did anything very unique. It was standard breakfast items rather than fancy brunch dishes, but people liked that it was simple, good stuff.” The Junius Heights eatery is bringing back fan favorites like fluffy pancakes and omelettes made with organic ingredients plucked from the backyard garden. Once-popular specials like the lamb bacon hash and the Monte Cristo will return to the menu as permanent items. “We want to use the garden more than we have in the past,” Wooton says. “That’s a great place to get stuff to make drinks.” The addition of a beer and wine license will allow Garden Cafe to serve customers fresh morning cocktails to sip while munching on brunch. The drink menu will include mimosas and so much more. Wooton is concocting a sangria with homegrown blackberries and fruit, plus cocktails utilizing mint herbs from the garden. Customers can order drinks at new bar seating at the front of the restaurant or at their table. The eatery is switching from counter service to full service. Brunch will be served all day during the restaurant’s new hours from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. If you like what you eat, come back for dinner from 5-10 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. “I live next door, so when I’m walking my dog, people ask when it will reopen,” Wooton says. “There’s a lot of people eager to get back in there. I’m nervous, and there’s a lot of pressure, but I’m super excited.”

Halcyon Skip the orange juice in your mimosa. Halcyon has 10 unique flavors that add an exciting splash to the classic brunch drink. “Sometimes the kitchen moves faster than the bar because people order so many drinks,” General Manager Amanda Campbell says. One of the restaurant’s best-sellers is the four-flavor mimosa flight, featuring flavors like strawberry lime, lemon lavender, apple cinnamon, Thai basil and cardamom pear. Along with several other morning cocktails, such as a fire-lit mai tai, Halcyon has a wide selection of espressos, cappuccinos and lattes. Halcyon serves hipster-millennial cuisine from the original Cafe Brazil location on Greenville Avenue. The eatery is typically counter service but offers table service on the weekends, when Campbell hires extra wait staff to accommodate the brunch rush. “It was a breakfast place before, and people wanted that again,” she says. “Dallas loves brunch.” Craving something savory, sweet or both? Your savory side will be content after downing eggs, bacon and brisket. Then satisfy that sweet tooth with peanut butter, banana and bacon French toast or the famous s’mores pancakes. “It’s the dish you bring out, and everyone’s like, ‘Oh, I want that,’” Campbell says. T h e m e n u fea t u res a g row i n g number of vegan options, which the restaurant has gradually added since opening in 2017. The vegan benedict with tempeh bacon over tofu, spinach, red cabbage, tomatoes, sourdough and vegan hollandaise is a favorite. So is the vegan skillet, a loaded cast iron with tofu scramble, mushrooms, kale, potatoes and vegan cheese. Other best-sellers, such as the breakfast burrito, can be made to accommodate a vegan diet. “I’m vegan, and I’m inspired by what I would eat and my recipes,” Campbell says. “I want biscuits and gravy like everybody else. There’s something for everyone.”

The annual gathering drew about 100 people to the ranch, where they would slaughter a pig and cow, then smoke 1,000 pounds of meat in grain silos. The tradition fizzled out for Beth and her sister, Jeanne Clifford, when they moved to Casa Linda. In 2015, the families bought meat grinders and sausage stuffers to revive the annual event in their new home.
“It’s a family tradition of mine, and it’s something I hope we can do forever.” T h ey m a d e 5 0 p o u n d s o f s a u s a ge t h e f i r s t ye a r a n d s u bse q u e n t l y b o oste d t h e i r output as the event garnered attention from family in south Texas, as well as friends from school, work and church. This year, about 25 people spent eight hours making 230 pounds of sausage. “It’s anyone who will listen to our sausage-making party stories and shows interest,” s a y s E l i s a We i c h , B e t h ’ s daughter. “After their disbelief, they’re like, ‘That’s pretty cool.’ We listen to music, drink beer and make sausage.” Everyone arrives with their pork at 7 a.m. Saturday while the temperature is still cold. that will fit in the grinder. The meat is sent through twice. The second time, i t ’s s e a s o n e d with a mix of spices passed down from Beth’s grandparents. It’s then packed into the stuffer and filled into a casing of hog intestines. The roll of sausage that emerges is cut into 1-pound links and tied with string. They’re hung on two-by-fours and transported down the street to the Cliffords’ house. They put the links in a makeshift smoker in their shed, where the meat is smoked for four hours over pecan and mesquite. The next morning, everyone returns with butcher paper and freezer bags to collect their links. They’re weighed and distributed according to how much raw meat each person contributed. “It seems like some of the sausage disappears,” says Joe Weich, Beth’s husband. “There were some suspects, but nothing could be proved. No one was confronted. It’s a lot of good people.” The sausages can last for three years in a deep freezer, but the families usually run out in about a year. Then it’s time to break out the equipment and assemble the team for another round of sausage making. “When we were young, we always ran away into the woods and avoided the work,” Elisa says. “When you’re older, you appreciate that these are things your ancestors did. I’ve always felt very connected to my Czech heritage because of this tradition. It was an opportunity to participate in the culture. It’s part of my identity.” The 1-pound sausage links are smoked for four hours over pecan and mesquite.

here’s a particular East Dallas neighborhood that has it all: lovely rolling hills, mature trees, charming cottages and lawns adorned with giant giraffe art and enormous gumball machines. Oh, were you expecting topiary and unnaturally green grass? Sorry, this is Little Forest Hills, and residents definitely live up to their motto of “keep it funky.” Do yourself a favor and cruise around this area bordered by Garland Road, Lakeland, Eustis and Old Gate. Once farmland and woods, the 1910 construction of nearby White Rock Lake spurred development of small homes and lake cottages. By the late 1950s, most of the lots were built out. The 1980s saw an influx of artists drawn to the area’s natural beauty, affordability and lake proximity. Drive down any street in Little Forest Hills and sense the bohemian vibe. Animal art abounds: the aforementioned giraffe, of course, along with cranes, lizards, a rooster, horse, pig and longhorn cow. You’ll even catch a glimpse of the elusive Bigfoot. All types of art dot the neighborhood. Joe Stokes, a resident of 23 years, knows something about it. You can’t miss his place on San Benito. Just look for the bright yellow bottle gate. “When I first moved into the house, I began gathering concrete and rock that was discarded to build a serpentine wall around the front of the property because I like walls,” he says. “Then I thought, ‘What’s a wall without a gate?’ I also thought it would add a touch of whimsy as well as security.” Whimsy, for sure. The gate has evolved over the years to its current yellow. It’s topped with a gable covered with a mosaic scene of a man overlooking a village at night. Peek just past the gate and through the trees to glimpse a vivid blue companion mosaic on the gable of Stokes’ house. Most eye-catching of all are the several dozen

Left: Joe Stokes’ yellow bottle gate is topped with Topo Chico bottles. Right: Laurie and David MacIver transformed a gumball machine into a terrarium filled with string lights. Photography by Jessica Turner.
Topo Chico bottles mounted all around and atop the gate, creating a halo effect. “For a time, my girlfriend and I only drank burp water,” he says. “I collected bottles thinking one day I might build a bottle wall or bottle tree. Instead, I created my bottle gate. Later I learned that bottle trees are supposed to remove evil from those who pass nearby. With my gate being the main passage to the entry to my house, everyone who enters gets a cleansing.” Another can’t miss item — the one that began his quirky yard art quest — is a 10-foot-diameter metal spool, which Stokes rescued from an old strip mall. He hauled it home in his old Toyota pickup, convinced it belonged in his yard. Be sure to look up for one of his favorite pieces: a Talavera frog on the roof. A couple of streets over on Groveland, you’ll no doubt spot the shady corner lot with a giant gumball machine front and center in the yard with a line of blue, green,
purple and red bowling balls serving as edging. Welcome to the explosion of art that is the home of Laurie and David MacIver, who have lived in Little Forest Hills for 13 years. The MacIvers admit they are not above what they term “trolling for treasures.” For them, bulky trash day equals art inspiration. A box of antique bottles and a random metal rack? Why, yes, those could be the makings of a wind chime. Three tiers of colorful bottles, strung at varying lengths, catch breezes and light. Look just beyond this lovely piece to the two giant dragonflies perching on the house’s chimney. “I saw a post of someone making dragonflies out of stair railings and bed posts [for the body] and started making those with fan blades as the wings,” David MacIversays. “The first art we actually did were the stained glass windows. We had a neighbor who is a retired stained glass artist that was
giving away her leftover glass. We took it and created our own windows.” Adding to the couple’s collection of glass art are David’s clever creations made with old window frames filled with antique dishware, such as platters, ashtrays and plates. The spaces are filled with glass beads. “We love the comments we receive from neighbors telling us this is their favorite house in the neighborhood,” he says. “They drive home specifically by our house to see what we have that’s new.” The artistic spirit is alive and well among these quiet, shady streets, and Stokes sums it up well: “If you are seeking uniformity, monotony, keep going. You won’t find it here. People here know what they are getting into. Keep Little Forest Hills funky.” PATTI VINSON is a guest writer who has lived in East Dallas for more than 20 years. e made the top five. According to the online newspaper Kev’s Best, the church I serve as pastor made the list of top five churches in Dallas based on criteria such as business history, services, pictures and media, opening hours, social media, website quality, awards and accomplishments, reviews and feedback, among other things. The top five churches on the list have little in common in terms of denominational identity, theological commitments or missional engagement. They are an odd grouping with one common factor: size. I am always happy when people rank us highly in whatever way, but how do we evaluate religious communities? There are many fine churches and other religious congregations in Dallas. I hope our members and others in the community have a positive view of who we are and what we do. But we are human beings who disappoint one another more often than I like. For all the good reviews we might receive, there are people for whom our church does not measure up. I regret that deeply, but I also understand it. Many churches are smaller and equally faithful. They lack the resources we are blessed with that allow us to provide ministries others can’t afford. No church can meet the earthly needs of everyone, yet many churches may meet the standards of heaven notwithstanding. When thinking about the value of any congregation, there are factors that aren’t included in Kev’s Best that should be considered. Here are a few. First, is the congregation faithful to its primary spiritual identity? Whatever the denomination, fidelity to the church’s core theological commitments is crucial. The reason for its existence is usually rooted in covenantal affirmations about God and
44 lakewood.advocatemag.com AUGUST 2021
what faith demands. If a church holds firmly to those things, it has reason to celebrate its life. Second, does the congregation maintain a witness in the world that is consistent with the teaching to love one’s neighbor as oneself ? Churches do not only exist for themselves; they are meant to be a salient influence on the communities where they are located. This may entail charitable work that relieves the plight of the poor and disenfranchised, or it also may include working for justice and the transformation of civic life for the sake of the common good. Finally, and more challenging, does the church show evidence that it changes over time in a way that maintains its vitality without forsaking its core identity? Willem de Kooning, the abstract expressionist artist once said: “I have to change to stay the same.” If a church looks and behaves in ways more reflective of the 1950s then the 2020s, it’s hardly relevant. Holding to the ancient faith faithfully today is the goal. Dallas is blessed to have many fine Christian churches and other religious congregations that are doing good and faithful work. The disruptive COVID-19 pandemic has added to the burden of maintaining healthy ministries in these days. We should pray for one another as we persevere. Competition between churches is less helpful than cooperation among us. GEORGE MASON is pastor of Wilshire Baptist Church, president of Faith Commons

erhaps actress Cameron Diaz said it best: “Growing old is a privilege. Not everyone gets to do it.” On the road to a silver-haired crown, many of us — or our loved ones — will need help. The good news is that there are plenty of nearby neighborhood resources to help ease into that transition. Here are a few tips from neighborhood senior resources to consider if you’re evaluating options for a senior you love. START EARLY. “Until we need to know something about senior living, most of us know nothing,” says Tammy Oliver, community relations with Juliette Fowler Communities. “Pre-plan golden years and retain control over your future. Start early, learn what your community offers and what it doesn’t, then designate personal intentions. If you or a loved one go to just one place and later need morecare, then you have to start over. Find a multi-care-
level place; make friends where everyone knows and loves you.” REFRAME THE OUTLOOK. When considering a move to a senior living community, “potential residents often think in terms of loss,” says Jennifer Griffin, VP of engagement with CC Young Senior Living. “Really, the focus should be on the gains - with a new community, new friends, new experiences, new hobbies — and so much more,” Griffin says. “With all the positive benefits gained, we often hear new residents wonder ‘why did I wait so long?’” NAVIGATE AGING. Vulnerable seniors can be targets of fraud and scams. It’s important for neighbors to advocate and protect the rights of older adults,” says Stacey Malcolmson, president and CEO of The Senior Source. Everyone’s on the go, but for seniors getting around can be tricky. Choosing to limit or stop driving is difficult, especially for seniors living without easy access to resources such as doctors or groceries. “Transportation accessibility is vital because it decreases isolation and increases the physical connections for new opportunities,” says Jonathon Braddick, community development manager for the AARP Ride@50+ Program in Dallas. “Older adults and their families want to look for a safe and reputable alternative ride services resource for affordable local transportation,” Braddick says.
