Atomic Pie downsizes after Lakeridge Village rent increase
Lake Highlands Creamery folded into Atomic Pie in October, and now the popular pizzeria is downsizing effective Jan. 1. The neighborhood-owned restaurant, which originally opened in 2011, will offer just carryout and delivery service, according to an announcement made via Facebook.
“We strongly desired to keep the bar and dining room, but the current leasing company desired to raise our rent 3X and we could not absorb that rent increase. Our kitchen is staying put and we will transition back to a DELIVERY and CARRY-OUT ONLY restaurant,” proclaimed the posting.
Seventh-grader helps the homeless
Lake Highlands resident Emma Qualia hasn’t made it to eighth grade yet, but she’s already founded a charity to feed the homeless and help the needy. The 12-year-old recently was featured on NBC Channel 5’s morning news segment “Tell Me Something Good” when she delivered blankets to the homeless in downtown Dallas.
Emma, who graduated last year from White Rock Elementary and now attends the magnet program at Westwood Junior High, says she founded Sandwiches 4 the Hungry because she wanted to serve her community. She recruits help from people willing to donate food, assemble sandwiches and deliver meals, often feeding 250 people per visit.

Q: A:
It’s rare to see a Delpozo dress in Lake Highlands. Perfectly modern and colorful with oversized ruffles, origami flowers and woven bows, it’s far too fanciful for the everyday. Yet, Chelsea Bell embraces the Spanish fashion house’s fussy details.
BETWEEN DROPPING OFF AND PICKING UP two small children, 35-year-old Bell is constructing her own fashion line in her ABC Streets home. The ruffles in her shift dresses aren’t as exorbitant as the ones on Delpozo dresses, but a Rosie+Belle dress can be tossed in the wash.
Founded by Bell in April 2017, Rosie+Belle offers dresses, skirts and accessories in bright colors. Garments are manufactured in Austin, and she personally makes all handbags and accessories in her Dallas studio.
“As a mother of small children, I need things that can be easily cared for because I am always getting touched with grimy hands,” Bell says. “Just today I got to my destination and noticed that the toothpaste my daughter was slinging around the bathroom while brushing her teeth had ended up on my skirt.”
Bell wears her own pieces almost daily because she can’t seem to find exactly what she wants on the market.
“Many of my garments offer a slight reference to another time with modern sensibilities that work with the busy life of a
21st-century woman,” Bell says.
Bell studied historical designers such as Pierre Cardin, André Courrèges and Paco Rabanne while completing her bachelor’s and master’s in fine arts and fashion design. She also earned a master’s in education. Bell conceived of Rosie +Belle during her last semester of teaching at Texas Woman’s University and SMU.
“More than anything, the timing was right, and I had a concept that I felt would work,” Bell says. “I have always made clothes for myself. People stop and ask me where my things are from, so I just decided to take the plunge and go for it.”
She missed teaching so much that she now teaches two days a week at El Centro College.
“It is refreshing and inspiring especially on days when things are hard,” Bell says. “When a woman is wearing clothes that fit her properly and make her feel comfortable, she exudes confidence and beauty.”

HOW THE LAKE HIGHLANDS CHAMBER IS IMPROVING OUR SMALL BIZ SCENE
HEALTHY LIVING AIN’T CHEAP
THE LAKE HIGHLANDS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE is still young compared to other well-established neighborhood groups like the Exchange Club and Lake Highlands Women’s League. Five neighbors — Ted Hill, William Davenport, Chris Fifer, David Tyson and Chris Bone — launched the organization in 2014.
The chamber’s inception stems from Hill’s observations of events in eastern and southern Dallas as much as Lake Highlands. Hill was a member of Leadership Dallas when the GrowSouth initiative was created to spur development in our city’s southern sector. He applauded the initiative but wondered what was being done to improve Lake Highlands. The neighborhood was stagnant, with only a few local restaurants and little development otherwise.
Then the Northeast Dallas Chamber of Commerce changed its name to the East Dallas chamber, and the Lake Highlands Public Improvement District mentioned starting a chamber.
The timing seemed perfect, Hill says. As a small business owner, he thought the chamber was essential to improving Lake Highlands’ economic slump. The past four years, the group has dedicated its efforts to supporting small businesses through networking events, ribbon cuttings and special events such as “We Love LH” Awards.
“Based on us, getting the town center done and the economy, Lake Highlands has turned the corner,” Hill says.
EVENTS TO WATCH BYOB
Since there’s no how-to manual for running a business, this program focuses on helping business people grow, Hill says. The topics run the gamut, from sessions on leadership and successful entrepreneurs to sales strategy and new tax laws. The meetings are held monthly during lunch at the Lake Highlands chamber offices, at 9101 Lyndon B Johnson Freeway, suite 670.
WE LOVE LH AWARDS BANQUET
Community members nominate businesses that have made an impact in the community and given selflessly throughout the year. Winners are announced at a banquet that has sold out the past two years. This year the Lake Highlands Chamber is considering a new event venue to host more people.
TALKO TACO TUESDAY
Learn about current events in Lake Highlands while casually munching on tacos from Resident Taqueria, 9661 Audelia Road. The event is open to the public, and no RSVP is required. The event is slated the first Tuesday of every month and features a different news organization each time.

BETTING ON BRAT
A NEIGHBORHOOD BEER HALL WITH SAVORY, SECRET RECIPES
Story by CHRISTIAN WELCH Photography by KATHY TRAN
16 lakehighlands.advocatemag.com JANUARY 2019 FOOD
House-made bratwurst, pretzels with pub cheese and a reuben sandwich round out their German-inspired menu.
DID YOU KNOW
IN THE FIRST FEW WEEKS after opening its doors, District 9 Draught Haus smells new. The owners haven’t quite figured out what height to keep the blinds to block the sun, but that hasn’t stopped a small crowd of regulars from finding their bar stools by 4 p.m.
The bar is a Thompson family affair. On a Wednesday afternoon, Andy is cooking on the line. Dana greets customers and sweeps the floor. Their son pours pints behind the bar, and their daughter helps where she can. It’s a different lifestyle than Andy experienced in his younger years as a member of The Buck Pets, an alt band in the late ’80s. Andy and Dana wanted something they could do as a family.
Their first family venture was a country store in Virginia where Andy perfected his bratwurst recipe. That is also where they created their Reuben sandwich, a recipe with a cult following that they brought to Dallas with them.
“In Virginia we had a pretty big meat count-
er business. That’s when Andy started developing his own recipe for bratwurst,” Dana says.
Since then, brats have developed a special place in the Thompson family.
“Brat is like bread and butter on the table. It’s so common that I don’t think of it as special. You have to have it on the table.”
The couple almost bought a spot in Deep Ellum but decided against it.
“We want to be in the neighborhood,” Dana says. “District 9 Draught Haus seems to be very much a place where you can come have conversations with neighbors and talk about what’s going on. That’s what we wanted, and it seems like that’s what’s happening.”
Dana had a little advice for those on New Year’s diets who might shy away from fatty meat and beer: “A little sausage never hurt anybody. I think happiness is more important than the scale. There’s something so valuable in just being happy. This sort of food and this beer, that’s what it brings you, happiness.”

FROM CLASSIC ROCK COVER BANDS AND UNCONVENTIONAL CRIME-CURBING MEASURES TO THE LIKES OF SCANDALOUS SHOPS AND RENTAL BIKES, HERE’S AN UPDATE ON SOME OF THE MOST INTRIGUING NEIGHBORHOOD STORIES OF THE YEAR.
Story by ELISSA CHUDWIN | Photography by DANNY FULGENCIO
Are bullets still flying over Bent Creek?
The City of Dallas took a no-nonsense approach to curbing crime at Forest and Audelia in the past few years. The Dallas Police Department implemented Project Safe Neighborhood, a nationwide program designed to reduce crime rates. The City of Dallas filed a nuisance lawsuit against the owner of Bent Creek shopping center and established the North Lake Highlands Public Improvement District, a targeted tax district whose funds are used for bettering specific areas.
After the city filed suit, Bent Creek principal Mohammed Khanani spent $250,000 to pay oduty cops, and increase security lighting, cameras and fencing. The measures shu ed crime down the road, but Bent Creek hasn’t yet lost its reputation as a haven for drug dealers and gang violence.
Want to knock out crime? Open a boxing gym
Another unconventional idea for curbing crime at Forest-Audelia has seen just as much success: A place for teens to practice boxing. The North Lake Highlands Youth Boxing Gym opened its doors in September 2017, and it appeared in the Advocate in March, when 35 kids, including Olympic hopefuls Joshua and Jordan Jenkins, were learning to box after school. Now 100 children come through the gym’s doors during the week. The Jenkins twins are entering USA Boxing’s elite category in hopes they can compete in Tokyo in 2020. The gym is a public-private partnership that relies on donations. Visit lakehighlands.advocatemag. com/2018/12/pay-it-forward-december/ to see how you can help.

Zoe Hastings honored with a lot of love and creativity
After 18-year-old Zoe Hastings was murdered in 2015, her mother, Cheryl, became a sexual-assault nurse examiner, a position that allows her to examine women who were raped, preserve evidence and even testify as an expert witness. Zoe’s father, Jim, found solace in art and drew hundreds of portraits of family members since his daughter’s death. He and sculptor Art Wells created a memorial piece in Zoe’s honor that now hangs at the White Rock YMCA pool, where Zoe was a lifeguard.
Rock out like it’s 1969
You’ve probably spotted these seven retirees and lawyers having a good time at the bar — except they’re typically holding instruments instead of beers. The Catdaddies’ first gig was a Lake Highlands Elementary talent show, and they’ve performed classic rock tunes the past 20 years. We covered the band’s anniversary set at Lone Star Roadhouse in September, and the band has kept busy since then. The Catdaddies serenaded runners at BMW Dallas Marathon in December and will do the same at Attorneys Serving the Community Heart & Sole 5k this February.

Risky business
First came Moss Farm neighbor Alkos Giagtzis with plans to open a topless club on Petal Street. Then came Hustler Hollywood to LBJ Service Road. The opening of a few sexually oriented businesses in Lake Highlands highlighted how di cult preventing them from opening is. The Dallas Police Department is required to approve a license request if the business complies with zoning laws and owners and managers don’t have criminal records.
Strategically placed pocket parks haven’t yet stopped sexually oriented businesses from coming to our neighborhood. The only significant change in the past year is who approves their licenses. A detective in the recently reinstated police vice unit now reviews requests.
Wheelie oversaturated
They popped up like pimples on what seemed like every corner of Dallas. Green Lime Bikes, orange Spin bikes, yellow Ofos and all the others.
So many dockless rental bikes hit the Dallas market in 2017 that we were knocking them over, moving them out of the way and imagining them as sentient robots here to destroy mankind.
Residents demanded something be done, so last summer, City Council placed fees on bike-share operators in Dallas, including annual licenses and a per-bike fee that gave companies incentives to keep the flood of bikes at bay.
After that, Beijing-based Ofo pulled out of the Dallas market, abandoning hundreds of its yellow bikes in our city. Most of them are garbage. Some have been claimed by homeless residents or made over with spray paint and Bedazzlers.
Just when rental bikes started clearing the streets of Dallas came another convenience/menace: electric scooters.
While whizzing around with little e ort in the Texas heat is a cool idea, scooter accidents are resulting in serious injuries and deaths across the country.
The evidence so far is anecdotal, gathered from news stories and trauma-center reports. Soon there will be an accounting.
The Centers for Disease Control currently is conducting a study of scooter-related accidents in Austin.

Evariste Emmanuel survived the unimaginable. His parents were killed; he was a child soldier; he was homeless; he saw his uncle murdered; and he lived in a refugee camp far from his hometown for years.
And yet, when the current Lake Highlands resident made it to the United States as a refugee in 2007, he wanted to return to the camp after a few days. Resettlement isn’t the rosy process that many believe it to be.
When Emmanuel was 8 years old, the civil war in the Democratic Republic of the Congo took the life of both his parents, leaving him and his brother Kaskile to fend for themselves in about 1998. Homeless for two years, they eventually found shelter, food and something close to family in a militia, where he became a soldier at 10.
“You don’t know what you are going to do until you put yourself in that position,” he says.
He was trained to operate an AK-47, to take part in battles and to kill, he says.
“With what you have, you have the power,” he says. “The only language is the sound of bullets, and if you miss, you risk your life.”
He fought in militias for two years. Then he came across his uncle, who was a double agent. The uncle moved between militias, trading information for favors, and found his two nephews in one of the groups. He took them home with him, but there, deliverance would not last.
One of the groups that Emmanuel’s uncle double-crossed came to his house. Emmanuel hid under the bed while the group murdered his uncle in the room. “I saw everything that happened,” he says. “Number one there is a silence [when someone dies]. You can see everything, but you can’t move.”
Traumatized, he didn’t know what to do next.
Fearing the men would return to kill the two boys, a neighbor put them on a fish truck headed to Kenya. For three days, they rode with the iced-down fish in the back of the truck, which let them off at Kakuma, one of the largest refugee camps in the world.
The two brothers slept outside of the camp for seven months, unsure of how to access it. A security guard helped them figure out how to register, and they eventually moved into the Congolese section of
the camp.
They lived there for seven years, finding safety and education, but they were without their family or much to eat.
The brothers received food twice a month and rationed it.
“You eat once a day, and you don’t fill your stomach, or you are going to end up hungry before 15 days,” he says.
Eventually, Emmanuel and his brother qualified for resettlement and headed to Dallas. He thought the United States would be “half-heaven.”
But when he arrived, things weren’t what he expected.
A refugee settlement agency placed him in a warehouse working in shipping and receiving. The summer heat in Texas and stuffy warehouse took its toll during 12-hour shifts: “I asked myself, ‘Am I going to die right now?’ ”
He became depressed.
Out of sheer frustration, he asked his agency to return him to Africa.
“I felt lost, and I didn’t know where to run

HOW LAKE HIGHLANDS TRAIL IS BEING EXPANDED
Eleven years passed between the start of construction and when the 2-mile stretch of Lake Highlands Trail opened to cyclists and pedestrians in 2014. The second phase of the trail won’t take eons to complete. But it has been a complicated endeavor to connect the path to the White Rock Greenbelt Trail and, ultimately, White Rock.
Lake Highlands Trail currently ends north of Lake Highlands High School at White Rock Trail (the residential street, not the trail of a similar name). Initial plans for a second phase to Lake Highlands Trail meandered across Skillman at Church Road to Tory Sound Drive.
That proposal lacked safety, City Councilman Adam McGough says. Vehicles often travel at 50 to 60 mph through the intersection.
Several public meetings and hours of research later, City staff formulated a new plan. The trail’s design work is now underway, and construction is slated to begin this year.
HERE’S
HOW THE TRAIL WILL EXPAND:
Narrow Arborside Drive and White Rock Trail (the street)
Taking 10 feet from White Rock Trail and Arborside will force drivers to slow down and allow a buffer between the trail and the roadway.
“The goal is to have a 12- to 14-foot trail along White Rock Trail,” says Robb Stewart, District 10 Park Board representative.
The path then travels west on Church Road, crosses Skillman and leads to Arbor Park and the future White Rock Greenbelt Trail.
A pedestrian-controlled traffic signal will be installed at the Abrams Road crossing, where the trail continues to follow the power-line easement and cut through Moss Park.
The trail then snatches part of the roadway at Arborside, where the curb will be moved to narrow the roadway and make

who wanted to minimize pavement in the park,” Stewart says.
Northern expansion
The need to keep students safe walking to Lake Highlands High School shaped the plan for expanding the trail northward.
Plans call for the trail to start at the Lake Highlands DART station and run parallel to White Rock Trail.
“We have a number of students who walk up White Rock Trail, and this will make it much safer for them,” Stewart says.
The design is challenging; public works engineers must minimize flooding and avoid wetlands.
They’re almost finished with the final drainage alignment, and trail construction is expected to begin this year.

An ode to the front porch
Let’s have more porch time this year. I know it’s January, and we’ll probably be huddled by fireplaces more than spread out on the porch, but “porching” is spiritual strategy as much as a physical place.
Audra D. S. Burch has written about the importance of the front porch to AfricanAmericans. She calls it “a stage straddling the home and the street, a structural backdrop of meaningful life moments. It is like the quietest family member; a gift where community lives and strangers become neighbors.” It’s a kind of outdoor living room where people connect and neighborliness happens.
Unfortunately, front porches have fallen out of favor, with alleys and garages allowing us to cocoon inside our homes. Central air-conditioning means we don’t have to go outside to find a breeze. Back porches have replaced front porches as extensions of our desire for privacy.
But something is lost in the design.
“Architecture and identity go hand in hand,” says Germane Barnes, an African-American architecture professor from the University of Miami. That leads us to ask what loss of identity corresponds to the loss of our front porches.
Commenting on Burch’s New York Times piece, one reader wrote: “My father died when I was a child, and he suffered his illness at home and died there. My parents had different Jewish backgrounds, with my mother more Conservative and kosher, and my father Reform and not. They agreed when they married that although my father could eat whatever he wanted outside, there would be no treyf in the house. When my father was dying, my grandmother asked if she could bring over his favorite food, which was lobster. My mother said, ‘Yes, of course,’ and she did, in an enormous pot. But he ate it outside, on the porch.”
This raises the metaphorical meaning of porching. Not just our family homes, but our churches, synagogues and mosques tend to retreat within their houses of God, carrying out worship, study and fellowship
only with likeminded believers. While that produces a cohesive sense of community for each congregation, failure to interact deeply with people of other faiths deprives us of skills necessary to love our neighbors as ourselves.
Any time we meet someone of a different faith tradition, we carry our own faith with us into the encounter, and we experience theirs at the same time. Sometimes this means negotiating public space in a way that makes room for others to feel at home, too.
That’s why saying "Happy Holidays" rather than "Merry Christmas" when we don’t know someone’s religious bent can be an act of love. Or if we do know what they are observing or celebrating, wishing

them "Merry Christmas," "Happy Hanukkah" or "Ramadan Mubarak" is an even kinder gesture.
Our country is becoming more spiritually diverse by the day. Rather than see that as a threat, we might take a seat on the porch and visit. Better understanding might yield a more peaceable world. And every religion can say “Amen” to that.
