A brewery with rock ‘n’ roll cred gets its name from City Council
District 9 Draught Haus gets its name from the City Council district where it’s located — an area east of White Rock Lake nestled between Lake Highlands and Lakewood near El Vecino restaurant. What gives this brewery its cool cred is the owners — Dana Thompson and her husband, Andy, guitarist for ‘90s alt-rock band the Buck Pets.
The couple wants to fill an untapped niche in the market with their German-style beer and food, they told CultureMap. The new spot will feature 28 taps of lagers, maibocks, helles lagers, altbier, bocks and double bocks. The couple says several taps will be reserved for German beers.
The menu is centered around bratwurst. The couple has a tried-andtrue recipe they developed at the restaurant and market they ran when they lived in Virginia.
Did you vote for Beto? Cruz? Jacob Hamilton?
Don’t worry if you didn’t see Jacob Hamilton’s name on the ballot. He doesn’t want your votes anyway.
The Wallace third-grader prefers flag football, soccer and Fortnite. But he was perplexed seeing the political signs in neighbors’ lawns this September.
His dad, Alan, explained that midterm elections were approaching, and Jacob said, “Well, I want a sign.”
How to get free trees
Trees: Not just pretty objects, future wood for your BBQ (tread carefully, pitmasters), a life preserver in a flood, an inconvenience for Oncor or the club where Kurt Cobain infamously punched a dude.
They literally chill, and improve the quality of, the air around them — quite cool, especially in a city that annually endures 40 or so triple-digit days.
In order to “reduce air pollution, cool neighborhoods and combat climate change,” Branch Out Dallas brings free trees to city dwellers. Each Dallas resident is allowed one 5-gallon oak, elm or redbud.
One of Alan’s longtime friends already created a prank political sign in Killeen, and his creation was the Hamilton family’s inspiration. They printed 10 signs with Jacob’s name, dressed in all black and put them in friends’ front yards one Friday night.
“People were getting so polarized when it comes to politics,” Alan says. “My wife and I wanted to release some of the stresses from the election season.”

‘TOTO’ OPPOSITE
THE DAUGHTER OF A FAMOUS MUSICIAN, JOSLYN TAYLOR WENT LOOKING FOR ANYTHING BUT THE ROCK-STAR LIFE
AS A TEENAGE DAUGHTER of the saxophonist for the ‘80s rock band Toto, neighbor Joslyn Taylor dreamed of a 9-to-5 job, wanted to wear business suits, have health insurance and invest in a 401(k). If she had the opportunity to tour in a band or head to Hollywood as an actress, she would have passed it up for a chance to stay home and get to know her neighbors.

In Toto’s 1982 hit “Africa,” the song ends with, “Gonna take some time to do the things we never had.” The hit, which resurfaced as a viral meme and as a Weezer cover, also echoes Taylor’s pursuit of the things her childhood lacked. Her father, Jon Robert Smith, played saxophone for Toto among many other bands, resulting in a less-than-average childhood for Taylor. She says she moved 17 times and never stayed in one place more than two and a half years. The moves took her and her twin sisters to California, Texas, Louisiana and back again.
Smith grew up in Louisiana listening to Fats Domino, Little Richard and Big Joe Turner. He learned to play the saxophone in garage bands. One night after playing a show in New Orleans, he hopped in a car with some older musicians and drove to New York City. As his reputation grew, he played with Dale Hawkins and Edgar Winter, who had three gold albums in the early 1970s.
Smith met Taylor’s mother, JoLynn, when she caught his eye from the front row at a music festival in a South Carolina cornfield. He talked to her after the show. She met him later at another show in Atlanta and then flew to California to see him again. They are still married 45 years later.
While living in California, Smith booked jobs with bands such as the Doobie Brothers and Randy Newman, but he always felt the need to protect himself and his family from the hard-partying rock culture of the 1970s. At one point, he turned down an offer to play for War, which would become one of the biggest bands of the 1970s. “I could have kicked myself,” he says.
Taylor remembers that many of the moves were to find the best school
12 lakehighlands.advocatemag.com DECEMBER 2018
Jon Robert Smith played the saxophone in several popular bands, including Toto, during the 1970s (Photography courtesy of Jon Robert Smith).
Joslyn Taylor moved 17 times growing up, but she landed in Forest Meadow in Lake Highlands.
But Smith had his time in the spotlight. He met future Toto drummer Jeff Pocaro on a tour, and when they geared up to record Toto IV, Smith was asked to play the saxophone for the album. The album was one of the most successful of the ‘80s, with songs such as “Africa” and “Rosanna.”
For 10-year-old Taylor, seeing her dad in a music video on early MTV brought some memorable moments. Pat Benatar told Taylor she liked her outfit when they met once backstage. “I got a lot of mileage out of him being in Toto when I was a teenager,” Taylor says.
Taylor would grow up to find a stable career. After stints in marketing
and as an editor at D Magazine, she is now a partner and principal of interiors at Swoon, a multidisciplinary design firm. Her work can be found everywhere from Forty Five Ten and the Joule to Adolphus hotels. For Taylor, her job balances the creativity her father experienced and the stability she craved.
Her parents have lived with Taylor and her husband, Bryan, in both East Dallas and Lake Highlands over the years. At age 73, Smith now lives in Louisiana and still plays several nights a week after surviving kidney and bladder cancer.
Taylor’s children, who are now in high school and sixth grade, have the settled childhood Taylor wanted to provide them. “I get to live out the best of both worlds,” she says. “That would not have happened if I had not been raised by an artist.”

systems. “It had a lot to do with not wanting to subject my children and wife to things that I knew I would have to do if I stayed,” Smith says.
TACO REVOLUTIONARY
LUXURIOUS TACOS — THE LOOK, THE FEEL, THE FLAVOR
Chicken tikka, shrimp ’n’ grits, Nashville hot chicken, fish and chips, chicken and waffles, Monte Cristo. These are just a few of the dishes that inspire Chef Grant Morgan at Velvet Taco. The late-night spot proves any dish can be turned into a taco. Except maybe soup. But it wouldn’t be surprising if Morgan made that work, too. He put grits in a taco for goodness sake.
Every week he creates a weekly taco feature, a “WTF.” It allows him to stay on top of food trends and try them out taco-style.
“I’ve seen caviar as a garnish in a lot of fine dining restaurants lately, so last week we had a baja taco with caviar,” Morgan says.

Morgan’s favorite WTF? A char siu pork taco with crispy, puffed rice. But a close second is the fried alligator taco on a hibiscus tortilla. He says the most underrated taco on the menu is the shrimp ‘n’ grits. His favorite taco, surprisingly, isn’t the fan-favorite chicken tikka.
“The No. 12, the brisket is my favorite,” Morgan says. “It’s the cheese-crusted flour tortilla with the slow-roasted brisket. It has chili-mayo and avocado relish. It’s good.”
For Velvet Taco, becoming a part of the community is important. They rent existing spaces so each location fits in with the neighborhood. The Greenville location is much bigger inside and has a drive-thru window

40 years of
Holiday in the Highlands
LOOKING BACK ON FOUR DECADES OF WONDER AND
Story
ELISSA CHUDWIN |

HIGHLANDS WOMEN’S LEAGUE
For 40 years, neighborhood families have meticulously rearranged their homes’ holiday décor and furniture for strangers to admire, all for the sake of charity. The Lake Highlands Women’s League organized the first Holiday in the Highlands in 1978, and there have been a few tweaks to the event over the years. The president of the league is no longer required to feature her home on the tour. Inclement weather in 2013 spurred the addition of evening hours. And the volunteers who guide visitors through each abode are called “docents” instead of “madams.” All things considered, the tour volunteer’s dedication hasn’t wavered, even when ice threatens to cancel the event entirely. With help from the league’s members, we’ve taken a look back at the past four decades to revisit the Holiday in the Highlands’ most memorable moments.

Best of the decades
1980s In 1985, Sally and Jim Nation opened the doors of their traditional brick home on Arbor Park Court to neighbors. Their daughters, Laura Crain and Christy Tobey, later joined the women’s league. Laura and her husband, Kelly, bought and remodeled the home, which now has a more modern look.
1990s When Sheryl and Bill Overstreet welcomed visitors into their Larchcrest home in 1991, it marked the first time a home was highlighted on
the tour twice. The previous owner put the two-story traditional house on the tour five years prior.
2000s Accountant-turnedbuilder Diane Cheatham transformed 14 acres of unruly brush into the modern, sustainable and sophisticated subdivision Urban Reserve. She and her husband, Chuck, have owned two homes — featured in 2008 and 2014, respectively — on Vanguard Way. “The thing that most comes to mind about them is they are incredibly generous and continue to give back to women’s league over the years,” says Fran Beazley, this year’s home tour chair.
2010s The homes on Estate, Winding Ridge, Milltrail and Chiswell were
lovely, but they weren’t the most memorable part of 2013’s home tour. “Icemageddon” raged right before the event, and women’s league members grappled with whether to cancel the tour. Their solution: host an evening tour the following week. All four homeowners agreed to keep their homes in pristine condition, and the Twilight Tour was deemed a success. “The houses look entirely different at night. There’s almost a magical quality about things lit up for the holiday season,” league member Robin Norcross says.
Behind-thescenes
Every year, two women volunteer as home tour co-chairs; they select the homes and plan the events. They always feature homes in both the Forest Meadow and Lake Highlands junior high schools’ attendance zones. Sometimes they begin sifting through homes as early as March. “That’s the trickiest part of being home tour chair because all these people give you houses to go look at,” says league member Beth Hanks, who chaired the tour in 2006.
Then, of course, there’s the home tour curse: when your child announces a wedding engagement after you accept co-chair duties. The curse has left several women to plan a wedding and the tour simultaneously.
Most memorable
There are a few things you can expect to see during Holiday in the Highlands, like immaculately clean houses and festive Christmas decorations. Every now and then, a home deviates from the norm. Enter the Trail Hill Drive house highlighted on the 2012 home tour. Its claim to fame? Taxidermy. Lots and lots of it.
Home tour etiquette
Do: Head to the tour between 2-4 p.m. when there’s no wait time.
Don’t: Attend the tour as soon as it opens, unless you don’t mind waiting in line.
Do: Ask the docents questions about the artwork, furniture and other décor.
Don’t: Open cabinets and closet doors. We hope that’s obvious.
Do: Be patient when the houses are crowded.
Don’t: Bring your camera, for the sake of homeowners’ privacy.
Do: Wear comfortable shoes. You’ll definitely hit 10,000 steps that day.
Don’t: Carry a large purse or tote. They can be inadvertent hazards to antiques and fragile decorations.

TREKKING FOR THOMAS GIVES LAKE HIGHLANDS FAMILY HOPE, PURPOSE
HOW A 1-MILE FUN RUN IS HELPING CHILDREN WITH A RARE GENETIC DISORDER
THOMAS MARTINELLI is a 10-year-old Lake Highlands Elementary student who rides his bike and plays soccer.
For his parents, Kim and Brent Martinelli, it’s mind-boggling.
“I don’t know how he does it,” Kim says. “He’s legally blind. He’s got tunnel vision.”
The Martinelli family discovered Thomas’ sight was fading when he was 18 months old.
After he failed a vision screening, Kim was confident that Thomas had an astigmatism.
But instead, an ophthalmologist examined Thomas, quickly left the room and returned with a senior partner.
“Your son is going blind,” the partner said. Thomas has retinitis pigmentosa, a degenerative eye disease.
Kim and Brent were left reeling. She worried vision loss was a symptom, rather than
the problem itself. As a speech therapist, she noticed other symptoms — hearing loss, low muscle tone, feeding issues.
“I just kept thinking there’s something tying it all together,” she says. “There has to be.”
More than four years and dozens of doctors’ appointments later, the Martinellis had an answer: Zellweger Spectrum Disorder.
“You just learn really quickly that there’s no one else looking out for your kid but you,” Kim says.
Zellweger Spectrum Disorder is a type of peroxisomal disorder, which are both rare and genetic. Peroxisomes are organelles that are “necessary for cell function, normal brain development and the formation of myelin,” according to the Global Foundation for Peroxisomal Disorder.

every organ system in the body, including the liver, kidneys and brain.
A geneticist in Houston told the family there was no cure. There was nothing they could do to help him either, he said.
“At first I was scared and completely depressed,” Kim says. “I call it my year in the black. I was in a fog. … I think it’s just a constant mental struggle to only think about the moment.”
Thomas defied the doctor’s expectations. His liver and vision are stable. And his brain has shown no signs of deterioration.
Three years ago, Kim ran a marathon to raise money for the Global Foundation for Peroxisomal Disorders, an organization that’s provided the family with instrumental resources and support.
Since her sons asked to run the marathon, Kim’s sister-in-law suggested they organize a fun run for kids. They coordinated Trekking for Thomas in three weeks and raised $5,000. Last year, nearly 200 kids participated, and they raised $23,000.
“Such huge supporters believe in Thomas,” Kim says. “And that’s all you want — a teacher or medical professional to buy into your kid. We’ve just been really fortunate.”

INTO THE FLOOD
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE SMALL CHANCE YOUR HOUSE MAY FLOOD BECOMES REALITY
LAURA AND ANDREW BRUDER were ecstatic to move into their new house on Goforth Road in mid-September. The street, tucked along White Rock Creek, doesn’t feel like it’s in the middle of a city. Wild turkeys and peacocks roam the street. Horses graze at nearby White Rock Stables’ property.
“I just love that it’s green,” Laura Bruder says. “We really landed upon this house really quickly.”
But the Bruders have yet to move there. The house was deemed uninhabitable nearly three months after they packed up their East Dallas condo.
“For now, it’s just a little bizarre life has taken this turn,” she says.
The Bruders closed on their ranch house on a Friday. They didn’t know more than 8 inches of rain would fall in 24 hours. Or that news stations would report White Rock Creek cresting at a record-setting 91.5 feet near Greenville Avenue.
Instead Andrew woke up early that Saturday, eager to meet the house painters. The steady downpour made him a little apprehensive.
Goforth Road is located in the 100-year floodplain, but longtime neighbors had reassured the Bruders they’d never experienced damage to their homes.
The term “100-year floodplain” itself is misleading; it doesn’t mean that flooding occurs once every century. The
hundred-year floodplain is an area subject to 1-percent chance of significant flooding in any given year.
In the 1960s, the basis for the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) became the one-percent annual exceedance probability (AEP) flood, according to the United States Geological Survey. Statistical probability is used to assess flood risk.
In other words, when and how often a flood occurs is really up to chance.
Andrew never made it to their new house. Standing water on Lawther Drive rushed into his car. He was OK, he told Laura on the phone, but the car was completely flooded.
“We discovered a few hours later that the car is the least of our worries,” Laura says. “The house was totally flooded.”
If Andrew somehow reached Goforth, he would have seen that all but one of the houses was vacated. Railroad ties floated in waist-high water. Mailboxes were completely submerged, although one detached and drifted away.
Goforth Road residents acknowledge that living in a floodplain is risky. When it rains, they park their cars on nearby streets knowing the road floods quickly.
But they say September’s flood was unprecedented, and rain has submerged the street several times since then. They worry that once they’ve completed reconstruction, the same

thing will happen again.
Michelle and Brandon Zuniga initially thought their home wasn’t damaged from water and focused their efforts on assisting their neighbors. A week later, tiles popped off the walls. They discovered floodwater had seeped from their crawl space vents into their walls and floors.
The day of the flood, the Zunigas watched as water slowly climbed up the five front steps to their one-story house. It was 3:30 a.m. when Michelle decided to go back to bed. Brandon wanted to pack a suitcase and pick up any belongings off the floor. She thought it was silly.
Then they saw water seep into their bathroom. The water in their backyard was higher than their shoes. The Zunigas woke up their 7-month-old son. Thirty minutes later, the water was knee-high, and it was so dark they couldn’t distinguish the floodwater from the pool.
Michelle’s boots weren’t high enough to safely wade through the yard. So her husband carried their baby and then Michelle to the car.
Like the Zunigas, Sarah Hargesheimer didn’t realize the severity of the flooding until she and her husband, Caleb, ushered their 2-year-old daughter out in the middle of the night. The water destroyed the cabinets and crib he built. They renovated the house they bought in 2010 together and finished remodeling in 2015.
“Your biggest investment is literally underwater,” Sarah says. “We’ve poured everything into that. Every penny feels sacred.”
Neighbors on Goforth have insurance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s National Flood Insurance Program. Dallas participates in the Community Rating Systems program, which is an incentive program designed to increase flood awareness. Dallas has a high rating, so residents have a 25 percent discount on their flood insurance premiums.
The insurance, though, doesn’t cover temporary housing, neighbors say. The property itself and the belongings inside are two separate deductibles. Any unattached structures, such as garages and sheds, also are not covered under the policy.
Most residents are staying with family members. Others, like the
Hargesheimers, are house hopping.
“As an adult, that’s hard,” Sarah says. “As an adult with a 2 ½ year old, it’s a whole new level of difficult.”
The day after the flood, Natalie and Matt Wilson, who live a few blocks away, surveyed the area to see what neighbors needed. They’ve collected donations and managed a GoFundMe page to help with preliminary costs, too.
“That’s the best part, realizing our community is a community,” Sarah says. “We’ve been blessed to be at the forefront of everyone’s mind.”
Once neighbors receive insurance money to rebuild, the process will take about three to four months. Despite the hassle, this hasn’t deterred neighbors from living on Goforth. Some point out that even if they did plan to sell, no one would be willing to buy.
“We love our neighbors, this area, so we hope it just doesn’t happen again,” Zuniga says.

Hope emanating from Bethlehem
Both politics and religion have failed the little town
“Olittle town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie …”
I happened to be in Bethlehem on Election Day last month, co-leading a group tour with my colleague and friend, Rabbi Nancy Kasten of Temple Emanu-El. While people who identify in the United States as red, blue or purple were fretting over the outcome of our midterm voting, I was grateful for the freedoms we enjoy across the political spectrum. The right to determine one’s future is still not universal in the world.
The little town we sing about at this time of year, Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus, is getting more cramped and desperate by the day, due to worsening conditions under which its native Palestinians are living. Bethlehem is a West Bank city in the Palestinian Territory adjacent to Israel and just on the other side of the wall separating it from Jerusalem. Palestinian Arabs — both Muslims and Christians (now a dwindling 2 percent of the population) — feel themselves increasingly hemmed in on all sides.
Politics have not solved the conflict between Jews and Arabs over the Holy Land. Religion has made it worse, not better.
But along the way on our trip, we kept finding ordinary people doing small but extraordinary things that defy the pervasive pessimism. While public schools in Israel are mostly segregated as Jew or Arab, some private schools deliberately diversify their enrollment and teach in Hebrew, Arabic and English.
A classical music conservatory based in Nazareth called Polyphony brings students of all backgrounds together around music. The Jerusalem Youth Choir rehearses weekly and performs all over the country, with high school kids who brave scorn from their families and peers to cross the cultural divide and sing with their neighbors. A kibbutz in the southernmost part of Israel has a program in environmental science with one-third Israeli Jews, one-third Palestinian Arabs and one-third international students who live and learn together. And back in
Bethlehem, a Lutheran Palestinian pastor has created a college for arts and culture with 500 Palestinian students that seeks to train the next generation of leaders to find solutions through creative means that transcend politics and religion.
Christmas is coming this month for Christians. We celebrate a Savior who did not come to dominate the world as a political ruler or even to create a new and better religion to supersede all others. He came to be a light in the darkness, to dwell among us as one of us, to love unconditionally and to cross every boundary to bring peace on earth good will to all.

Peace on earth and good will to all was the message of the angels to the shepherds in the fields around Bethlehem at the time of Jesus’ birth. It wasn’t a message to one group only; it was a message to all. It still is.
“O little town of Bethlehem ... the hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.”
Hopes and fears both, but hope will always outlast fear.

FLIGHT OF THE PELICANS
FACTS ABOUT WHITE ROCK’S SEASONAL FLEET
WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THE PELICANS’ MIGRATING PATTERN?
American white pelicans spend the summer in the interior of North America — Colorado, Wyoming, Canada — nesting in large colonies. They winter along the Gulf Coast and into Mexico. In the spring, they migrate north to their breeding grounds. In the fall, they head back south. That is when most people in DFW notice them. Starting in September and October, it is common to observe large flocks moving through the area. They fly in loose “V” formations. Occasionally they break formation and begin to circle around each other in big undulating organic groups. After a while they will form up again and continue on their way.
WHY DOES THIS AREA APPEAL TO THEM? There are many large and relatively shallow ponds, lakes and reservoirs that are well suited to the way American white pelicans hunt for fish.
WHAT TIME OF YEAR DO THEY USUALLY SPEND HERE?
They will be here from October through March.
WHAT TIME OF DAY IS THE BEST TIME TO WATCH THEM?
They are active and observable all day long.
WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE TO WATCH THEM? Sunset Bay on White Rock Lake is one of the best places in the Metroplex to see them. They stay close to shore and are relatively tolerant of observation there.
DO THEY COME BACK TO THE SAME PLACE EVERY YEAR?
They flock to White Rock, white wisps of poetry gliding up and floating down the current, a calming and peaceful signal of a new season. Chris Jackson is a hobbyist and creator of the website DFW Urban Wildlife. He’s been observing, photographing and writing articles about our neighborhood’s wildlife, including pelicans, for the last 15 years. “White Rock Lake is one of my favorite places for pursuing this hobby,” he says.
It’s not uncommon for birds to be habitual in their behaviors, but I’m not sure how dedicated American white pelicans are to their wintering grounds. I would not be surprised to learn that the same birds come back to the same places year after year.
