#TBT: 1977 gas tanker explosion at Skillman and LBJ. Do you remember where you were on a winter night in 1977 when an explosion rocked the north end of Lake Highlands? Search “LBJ” at lakehighlands.advocatemag.com to read more.

“I lived at Oak Tree Village there just south of LBJ on Skillman. I really thought a plane had crashed in my courtyard. Wasn’t long before firemen were pounding on my door with orders to evacuate.”

“I remember parents were away and a babysitter was with us. She was a high school student and kept a cool head, but we were scared because we knew something was wrong.”

“I remember seeing the fireball from the explosion. It was very frightening. I still get uneasy around tank cars.”

HOMEGROWN

Granger Smith makes his mark on red-dirt country

In the 1998 Lake Highlands High School senior show, four students sang “Seven Bridges Road.” One of them, Granger Smith, became a BMI award-winning country music singer and songwriter who’s toured across the world, performed on “The Bachelorette” and created a career right here in Texas. After attending Texas A&M University and a stint writing music in Tennessee, he came back home. “My advice is stay in your hometown and build your following as much as you can wherever you are,” Granger says.

How did you get started in music? I first started playing guitar in ninth grade. I had a couple of friends that played guitar, and I saw that it was pretty awesome and that girls liked it. I had a guitar in my closet

from my grandmother, who never played it. I remember going home one day and deciding I was going try. I taught myself with the little book inside the case that showed you where to put your fingers to make chords. It came easily to me.

Favorite memory of Lake Highlands: Playing in Texas Stadium for the playoffs, which we did all three years I was in varsity football. I enjoyed seeing the pride and the culture of Lake Highlands.

How did you get off the ground returning to Texas? It was all about playing live shows because in Nashville, it was all writing. I didn’t have anything when I moved back, music-wise. I started by approaching a venue in College Station. I asked if I could start a Thursday open mic night and host it

as long as I could play some of my own songs in between other people playing. I slowly built a band, and we branched off, playing in other places on Fridays and Saturdays.

What was it like to have a No. 1 song, “Dirt Road Driveway?” All of the albums before that were not as successful and to see something recognized on a national level was the biggest thing that ever happened.

Highlight of your career: Definitely one thing that comes to mind is when we did three tours in Iraq. They impacted my performing, writing and philanthropy work. I realized music has the power to really affect people, emotionally and spiritually. We would go around and play in small forward operating bases, and every day was different. We could be playing about two shows a

10 lakehighlands.advocatemag.com october 2020

day. Some days it would be a gymnasium packed with people. Some days, it would be on a little strip of gravel. People would sit on top of tanks and watch.

Most memorable moment on stage: I fell off the stage in New Jersey, broke two ribs and punctured a lung with one of the ribs that broke. I got back on the stage and started singing. I didn’t have very much breath because of the punctured lung. I could feel crunching on the ribs and knew something was wrong. I played a few more songs, went to the emergency room and started what became about six weeks of rehab. It was adrenaline that was mixed with embarrassment.

Performing on “The Bachelorette”: We did that in Park City, Utah. We flew out there and played a show to a small crowd in a bar, which was prepared to be on the show. We had to wait for the couple to walk from

the dinner date into the bar, as if, “Oh look who’s randomly playing here.” The idea of it was way more awkward than the actual execution of it. We played the song two or three times from different angles, and they filmed it. But it was a really neat experience.

His new album “Country Things Vol. 1”: It’s my first album that is separated into two volumes. The volumes are coming out on different dates because there were 16 songs. It’s a little bit too much music to come out at once. About half of it was written before COVID, and the rest was written when we were shut down and not touring at all.

His brother, Tyler, is on the newest season: He’s also my manager, so having my manager and my brother gone during an album release was stressful. At the same time, we’re all just really glad to see him because it’s the first time in our working relationship that the spotlight was on him and not me.

Must-have tool for writing music: It used to be my guitar. But with our new addiction to phones, I get a lot of a song done without a guitar, just with my phone recorder and humming a melody. I sing words on top of it and then add in the lyrics right there on my phone.

Luna & Dr. Tina
THE FACE MASKS COME
BE

In November of 2019, Regina Harris became the first Black woman elected to the Richardson ISD Board of Trustees. After 30 years working in corporate America for Coca-Cola, Yum! Brands, Pizza Hut and technology company Webvent, Harris decided to run for school board after it was redistricted to create more diversity. Before winning the election with 52% of the vote, Harris was on the district’s new Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee.

On running for office for the first time: On Election Day, I was extremely nervous. The results were super close, and I had been hearing from so many people that it was going to be tough for me to get that 50% [to avoid a runoff]. By 2 or 3 a.m., I felt pretty good. It was a very long day.

What the board has been working on: Just the whole structure of what school looks like. We went to spring break and never returned. We’ve dealt with that, in addition to the ongoing uptick in the diversity issues that have accumulated in our world today.

How she sees her job:

My personal goal is education and communication to my community, board members and the district. For myself, I’ve been sitting back and listening to stories — stories that are like mine, stories that are not like mine. Everyone has a different focus, a different feel, a different story in reference to racial disparity, their experiences, their non-experiences.

The best part of being a board member:

In the beginning, it was getting out to the schools and listening to the principals and teachers. I’ve never been a teacher. Now that we’re behind computers and practicing social distancing, it really has made you sit down, hunker

FACE OF CHANGE

down and truly listen with your ears. That’s probably my favorite part. Now I’m itching to go out there to help and do something.

How her presence has changed the board:

T here has definitely been more attention to diversity. It’s been the elephant in the room, but now people are beginning to talk freely about it. People feel like they can be authentic and that they are open to ask those tough questions. I think it takes people like me, who have a positive attitude about it, to make them feel comfortable about what they want to say.

How corporate America shaped her: Being part of some of the organizations that I worked for, like Coca-Cola and Pizza Hut, has helped me develop some of my diverse background. I worked around people that don’t look like me and had to feel comfortable in that environment. I also learned simple articulation of things and I understand concepts that someone who hasn’t worked in corporate America may not be able to do.

At home during the pandemic:

We are doing well. My son Brian is a senior at Richardson High School. It’s been a little tough for him. He plays a huge role in the band and just made drum major. He’s super excited to get back to his friends and normalcy.

Her biggest inspiration: Maya Angelou. I find myself going back and looking up something that she said and trying to apply it to my everyday life.

PROOF OF LIFE

A father’s kidnapping as told through the 1994 video diaries of his son

EAST DALLAS NEIGHBOR MILES HARGROVE never set out to create a documentary when his father was kidnapped by guerilla fighters in Colombia. Several months into hostage negotiations, he realized the circumstances were too remarkable not to document. He knew his dad would want to see it someday.

So Miles picked up a camera and recorded events on cassette tapes over the next year as his family paid ransoms and worked with federal agents to secure the release of his father.

Filming became a coping mechanism. Now, Miles has turned the footage into the documentary “Miracle Fishing” to probe

the family’s traumatic experience more than 25 years later.

“Miracle Fishing” was supposed to debut in April at the Tribeca Film Festival, but the event was canceled because of the coronavirus. Since then, it has premiered virtually at a number of film festivals, including AFI Docs, Sidewalk Film Festival and Monmouth Film Festival, where it won best featured documentary.

“It’s weird to relive the worst year of your life over and over,” Miles says. “It’s emotionally draining. There were so many times in the years leading to the final push when I doubted whether I could complete it. It’s been great to step back and go, ‘Wow,

a year or two ago, you weren’t in this place.’ I have to be proud of that accomplishment.”

Miles’ father, agricultural journalist Tom Hargrove, was captured Sept. 23, 1994, by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC. Guerillas had set up a makeshift roadblock in the Colombian countryside in the hopes of catching someone valuable. The practice is known as “pesca milagrosa,” or miracle fishing, which inspired the name of the film.

In a ransom letter, guerillas demanded $6 million or else Tom would be executed.

Miles, a sophomore at Texas Christian University at the time, flew to Colombia, where his parents had lived for three years.

Neighbors Miles and Emily Hargrove met on the set of “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.”

His home videos show how family friends and colleagues kept the faith to rescue Tom. The community helped raise two ransom payments: one of $181,000 and one of $203,000. Shortly after the second payment, Tom was released after 11 months.

The group has pledged not to watch the film until they can do so together.

“Had I been thinking like I do now, it would have been shot so differently,” Miles says. “It’s shot with amateur footage. I hope that makes it compelling to people because nothing is contrived or set up. I was embarrassed by how amateur it all was, but revisiting it years later, the graininess of the footage is like a look. It’s like a time capsule of faded jeans and massive cell phones.”

Miles had hoped to make the documentary sooner, but it took time to find investors to finance the project. Then in three subsequent years, the stock market crashed, leading to the Great Recession, and both of his parents died. He couldn’t bear to look at the footage, so he put it away for years before picking it up again in 2017.

In the decade before resuming “Miracle Fishing,” Miles focused on gaining experience in the film industry. After graduating with a degree in radio, TV and film, the Abilene native moved to Dallas and worked on the set of “Walker, Texas Ranger.” He paid his dues as a prop assistant and utility sound technician until getting his big break. In 2000, he helped produce “The Making of Proof of Life,” an inside look into the movie inspired by his father’s capture. The movie starred Meg Ryan and Russell Crowe.

That led to more behind-the-scenes projects for “Miss Congeniality,” “Van Helsing” and “Fast & Furious.”

In 2003, he was hired as a behind-the-scenes cameraman for “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.” When the mysterious Texan arrived on set, his future bride, Emily, took notice.

The Brit had joined the crew on the previous film as a personal assistant to Emma Watson, who played Hermione Granger. Emily’s sister taught Watson in kindergarten and knew producers were looking for someone to mentor the young actress. Emily got along well with Watson and was hired to work with her for

the next five years.

The couple met outside the Shrieking Shack and developed a friendship over the next several months. When filming wrapped, Miles went back home before returning for the fourth film. That’s when the magic happened.

They kept their relationship a secret at first and enjoyed London together without baggage before telling the crew. It was a fun and exciting time before two years of overseas, longdistance dating. Miles proposed at the top of Reunion Tower, and the two married in 2007 in Big Sur, California.

“Harry Potter truly changed my life,” Emily says. “I wouldn’t have met Miles. It was hard work, but it was a magical time. I never once took it for granted. I was eternally grateful I had that opportunity. It changed the trajectory of my life.”

If it weren’t for Miles, Emily would not have come back to Dallas. Before they met, she had visited only once before for a public relations conference at the Hilton Anatole. They left the hotel only once to drive by the old Texas School Book Depository, where President John F. Kennedy was assassinated.

“I thought it was the most terrible place I had ever been,” she says.

But Miles showed her a side of Dallas that can’t be seen from the freeway. They walked around White Rock Lake, got drinks at cool neighborhood bars and visited filming locations that Miles remembered from “Walker, Texas Ranger.”

Emily misses the green hills of Yorkshire, but their house near Norbuck Park reminds her of home. It’s located next to a network of rarely used trails, and on rainy days, she and the kids — a second-grader at Hexter Elementary and a sixth-grader at Talented and Gifted — love to explore the woods.

“The most tragic things can lead to the greatest things,” Miles says. “The kidnapping, as horrible as it was, happened, and life goes on. There was a film inspired by my dad’s diary, and I did the behind-the-scenes making of that film. That led me to Harry Potter, and that led me to where I am now, sitting next to Emily in Dallas.”

“The most tragic things can lead to the greatest things.”

Can you be spiritual and not vote?

Voting is a civic duty. Is it also a spiritual imperative?

Early voting begins this month and culminates on Election Day, Nov. 3. In the 2016 general election, only six out of 10 eligible voters cast ballots, and COVID-19 could have a dampening effect on turnout. Texas is one of seven states that has rejected expansion of voting by mail for those concerned about exposure to the virus.

No one doubts that one person — one vote — is at the heart of democracy. To vote is to participate in an exercise that extends our democratic republic. But does faith add additional burden to vote in civil elections?

Cantor Shoshana Brown rightly writes: “As far as Judaism, Christianity, Islam and Hinduism go, none of these faiths have sacred scriptures that explicitly address the issue of voting — for the simple reason that all these faiths sprung up and developed in places and eras when people tended to be ruled by monarchs, emperors or other leaders who were not selected by the people at large.”

The Constitution permits every citizen to vote, and the Bill of Rights ensures religious liberty. Perpetuating our historic experiment in freedom has religious implications even if our sacred texts lack explicit mandates about executing that democratic right.

Still, we can extrapolate from biblical texts. While Jews and Christians in different ways have understood themselves throughout history as resident aliens in the world, seeking their true homeland in the age to come, both texts and contexts have urged political participation.

While in captivity in Babylon, Israel was enjoined to “seek the welfare of the

city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the L ord on its behalf, for in its welfare, you will find your welfare.” Likewise, Christians were commanded to “pray for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.”

No perfect kings or people in high positions have ever existed, so faithful Americans shouldn’t claim conscientious objection to voting. We have always had only sinners on the ballot. If I were running for office, I would have holy reticence about voting for myself given what I know about my character. Even so-called value voters who rush to the polls to cast ballots for people they enthusiastically support should recognize that their candidates are only human and can never deliver on all they have promised.

One principle pervades all religious traditions: Love your neighbor as yourself. That means faith-based voting shouldn’t focus on self-interest or group interest. It should attend to what is good for all, crossing strata of race, religion class and culture.

In the end, we will have no one but ourselves to blame for the country or community we get if we fail to vote (assuming no foreign intervention). See you at the polls.
