REAL ESTATE NEWS

A CALIFORNIA-BASED investor recently purchased the CityScape Apartments in Vickery Meadow. Wedgewood Inc., which is known for buying foreclosed homes, bought the 267-unit property at 6466 Ridgecrest Road. The company also bought a 63-unit apartment building in Oak Cliff. The Vickery Meadow apartments are across the street from Timbercreek Shopping Center and not far from the new school that will replace Jill Stone Elementary. HOME DEPOT.

One year after an EF-3 tornado churned a path of destruction through portions of Dallas, the Home Depot on Forest Lane at North Central Expressway officially reopened to customers. Store officials hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony, with State Rep. John Turner and Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Adam McGough holding either end of an orangepainted board for the home improvement retailer. An American flag, tattered and torn from the 140 mile-perhour winds of Oct. 20, 2019, was hoisted again to symbolize the chain’s dedication to rebuilding the store and restoring hundreds of jobs.

A DECADE OF DEDICATION

Hamilton Park resident advocates for voting and assists at polls for past decade

Germaine White was born and reared in Hamilton Park where her parents instilled the importance of education and helping others.

She graduated from Lake Highlands High School in 1976 and attended Southern Methodist University’s Meadows School of the Arts, completing her degree in 1980 and later, earned a graduate marketing certificate through Cox School of Business

White spent 20 years working in Washington, D.C. and San Francisco Bay Area as a healthcare sales and marketing director. She returned to Hamilton Park in 2007.

What was being a part of a National PanHellenic Council organization in college like?

I pledged Delta Sigma Theta sorority at SMU because of its emphasis on education, serving others and social justice, which aligned with my own family values. It is a lifelong commitment of shared, common goals and values where lifetime bonds are formed.

What organizations are you a part of?

I’m a member of the National Association of Health Underwriters, Leadership Montgomery (Maryland), Leadership Dallas Alumni Association, Women in Government, the Preston Hollow Democrats, Richardson Area Democrats, the North Dallas Texas Democratic Women, Hamilton Park Civic League and Interorganizational Council (IOC).

What’s your current job?

I’m the owner of GW Insurance Consultants, a multi-state life and health insurance agency. As a Medicare specialist, I work closely with seniors to help them understand basic Medicare and to craft solutions to address their health and financial needs. As a licensed independent broker, I advise

individuals and families on health, dental, vision, disability and life insurance.

How do you stay involved with voting?

Growing up in a political household, I watched my parents vote in every election and could not wait until I was old enough to vote. I deeply believe in the power of voting. Over the past 10 years, I’ve helped people register to vote as a volunteer deputy registrar for Dallas County and in 2019 became deputized in Collin and Tarrant counties. I have organized and participated in voter registration drives. As an officer of the Hamilton Park IOC and precinct organizer, we promote the importance of voting within our community for every election.

What have you learned volunteering?

While chief of staff for a Dallas County commissioner, I became critically aware of how important election workers are to our democracy. We often take them for granted. I begin working as a volunteer and in paid positions as an election judge, clerk, and poll watcher 10 years ago. It is an honor to be able to help others exercise their right to vote.

Why is it important to vote?

Voting is our opportunity to be heard, our voice. Voting is a powerful tool for change. Our elected officials make decisions every day that impact our lives, good and bad. We need to elect people who will represent our values. The only way to do that is to vote.

What does voting mean to you?

I can affect change regardless of my ‘status’ in society. I can impact issues that I believe are critical today and into the future such as healthcare, living wages and taxes— policies made by those we elect to serve.

says. “Every day, at Friday around 3:45, we all would stand together like, ‘Okay guys, ready?’ It felt like we’re going to war.”

The opening months were a combination of stress and exhilaration as the Bradleys finally opened the brewpub they waited so long for.

The couple met at advertising agency DDB Dallas. Craig was in design and art direction and Veronica in copywriting.

“When you watch an ad, or hear an ad, you go, ‘Man, who thought of that?’ Someone like us,” Veronica says. “We came up with the ideas, and then we made them real.”

They left the advertising industry to pursue home brewing.

“We wanted to bring something that was a little more intimate and community-driven,” Craig says. “Where people could come, hang out, have beer and food.”

While most breweries are a warehouse with a food truck, the Bradleys wanted a neighborhood spot where families were welcome. Until 8 p.m., of course, when children are sent home, the lights dim and the place becomes an adult hangout.

They created every concept from their logos on glassware to the mural on the patio. A friend designed the mural, and Craig sketched and painted it.

Everything at Vector is made in-house, including the sourdough crust.

“We are trying to source local,” Craig says. “We work with a lot of local farmers, micro farms or the Chubby Dog Farm for all the pork sausages.”

The restaurant focuses on sustainable options, composting trash and baking dog treats from leftover brewery grain. They have a seven-barrel brew house system, wines and ciders.

“We wanted something that was in the neighborhood that people would be proud of,” Craig says.

LA ARTISTE

THREE NEIGHBORHOOD WOMEN WHO ARE USING THESE TURBULENT TIMES TO CREATE ART

MAKE MISTAKES

elen Lary’s art is a bit of a paradox. Her paintings on canvas and with watercolor can feel ethereal, soothing and tranquil, or fun, vibrant and whimsical— it all depends on where the piece takes her.

“I start a painting with a vision, and after it dries and I come back to it. I’m like, ‘I think I’m going this way today,’ then go in a totally different direction,” Lary says of her artistic process. “Day-to-day moods change and you feel something different, so then the painting takes on a whole new life.”

A self-taught painter, Lary’s transition to full-time artistry

began unexpectedly. She studied marketing at Baylor University and worked in advertising after graduation. Later, after her three children were born, she dabbled in photography but “knew it wasn’t quite the creative outlet I needed.”

“Once I started painting, I realized how much I loved it. I’ve never taken a class before. I’ve never YouTubed anything before. Honestly, I just started,” she says. “We needed a piece of art for our first home, and my husband didn’t want to commission a piece because he didn’t know what it was going to look like. So one day, I (decided) to buy a canvas and paint something, (figuring) if I didn’t like it in three months I’d toss it. After that, I could not put the paintbrush down.”

Today, Lary paints from her home in Lake Highlands, in a studio over her garage. She typically works in pairs or groups, painting multiple pieces at a time; she says it helps her creatively. Smaller paper pieces or mini canvases generally take a few days to complete, while larger paintings can take weeks.

“I just kind of go at my own pace and let the movement and the colors tell me where to go,”

18 lakehighlands.advocatemag.com november 2020

Lary says. “I love being in color every day. It’s a great way for me to use all of my senses and put them into painting. I usually start with an idea and almost 99% of the time I end up somewhere totally different than I was envisioning, but it’s usually always better.”

The bulk of Lary’s work is commissions, and she says she loves collaborating with clients. In addition to initial brainstorming and direction from a client about their custom piece, Lary gathers feedback as the piece progresses.

“With commissions, you have their story that you kind of paint into the canvas. It’s definitely a work that they’ve had some say in, and feel like it’s really, truly theirs,” she says. “I want everybody to be 100% happy with their pieces. I’m so honored when someone asks me to create something for them.”

Lary gathers inspiration from a bevy of sources — travel, nature, interior design or her everyday life and familial roots.

“My mom is from Mexico, so I grew up spending a lot of time there. That’s my happy place, so a lot of inspiration comes from the feeling of being there — the bright, vibrant colors, the textures, the smells, and just the warmth that comes from being in Mexico,” she says. “(I draw inspiration from) everyday life, too. It’s usually just a little snippet of something, seeing something as I pass by. Then I’ll mull that over in my head, marinate that, and it usually comes out as some kind of art.”

Despite her success, Lary says she has struggled with finding her footing in the art world and feeling validated as an artist.

“I definitely still get hung up on the word ‘artist.’ Sometimes I don’t feel like I can call myself a real, true artist,” she says. “But that’s just in my head and something I struggle with. Being creative is being an artist.”

Over time, Lary learned to embrace the process and transform her self-doubt and “mistakes” into part of the finished product.

“Being a painter, you are going to be critical. But you learn to be less critical, to just go with the flow and see what you come up with,” she says. “And if a piece doesn’t sell, that’s fine. I can paint over it, or create something different. All those little mistakes, they’re not really mistakes. They’re in there and it tells a story.”

20 lakehighlands.advocatemag.com november 2020

DRAW A CROWD

hen Anna Brindley sold a painting to ‘Schitt’s Creek’ actor and producer Dan Levy, she asked him to send a selfie with the painting once he received it in the mail. He quickly sent an image of himself holding the portrait of his TV mother, Moira.

“That’s gold isn’t it?” Brindley says. “I’m celebrity crushing, but he’s a true artist in every sense.”

Brindley’s background in fashion is one of the main reasons she admires the show’s incredible costume design. She earned an Associate of Arts in Fashion Design and a Bachelor of Science in Production Manage-

ment Textiles from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York.

She’s always had an entrepreneurial spirit. In the ’80s before anyone dressed up pets or toted pups in purses, she had an idea for a dog clothing line. In 2009, Brindley created “Suitable Pajamas,” a line of fashion-forward pajamas which would have been perfect for the working-fromhome era.

“It was too ahead of its time,” she says.

Brindley lives in Lake Highlands with her husband, Hanes, a world history teacher at LHHS and two daughters, Arabella and Anna Catherine.

Initial interest in art: Third grade because my mom used to give me a blank sketch book and markers for almost every birthday and Christmas. My mom always

november 2020 lakehighlands.advocatemag.com 21

encouraged it and then put me in lessons. It just lights my fire, so to speak.

How she switched career paths: I’ve worked in tech for almost 23 years with retail and apparel manufacturers. I’ve worked since I was 11 years old, so I was suddenly without work. When the pandemic hit, I was a little bit lost, and my teenage daughter got me to do a daily art challenge. I did an April and May challenge, all of a sudden, I was selling artwork and people were asking to buy it. I’m kind of an entrepreneurial wannabe. This would be my fourth launch, so maybe the universe decides for me.

Art getting her through COVID-19: I’m not exaggerating when I say, I think it has saved me from despair. I know so many artists who don’t do their art, and I was one of those people. Almost every social media post I try to remember to say, “Do your art,” because people would private message me and say, “I want to do this with you.” I’m like, “Get on it. Do it. Please do it.” and, “The world needs to see it.”

Painting style: A lot of people find a groove and stay in it. I do the opposite of that. I love to paint still life. Portraiture and figure painting are probably my favorite, but I love landscapes. I’m now experimenting with abstract, which is the bigger mountain to climb. I’ve done 15 paintings I’ve shown to no one. I’m starting to call them “my little babies,” and I talk to them.

One tool she has to use: I love a paint rag. I feel like they’re part of my process, and they look like art when I’m done. I’m sure to other people they look like a hot mess. I feel lost if I don’t have the little towel with me.

Her daughters’ art: [Arabella is] 13 and probably a better artist than I am. She’s doing things that I wasn’t doing until college. It’s incredible. I have a daughter

[Anna Catherine] who has Down Syndrome, she’s also a painter. I had them both painting literally in their diapers. I have pictures of them at the easel. I took my daughter who has Down Syndrome to a pre-school and the teacher said, “You know, your daughter doesn’t really play with toys.” I was like, “Well, have you seen her with a brush?” We had to turn our dining room into a little studio because painting is more important than eating, apparently.

Why she loves ‘Schitt’s Creek’: If you watched it for the fashion and turned off the sound, it would be still such an exciting show. It is comic genius and who doesn’t need to laugh right now.

Why she admires Dan Levy: He advocates for the marginalized. It was crazy because he was touching on all the areas for my family. Our daughter with Down Syndrome is high risk. She has respiratory illnesses, so we’ve had to completely lockdown. When he came out and said, “Wear a mask,” I thought, “Oh, thank you.” He did a tribute for teachers with Mariah Carey. He was taking care of everybody. Of course, he does a lot with the LGBTQ community. What a beautiful soul.

Current favorite fashion trend: It would have to be the pajamas because that was the one launch that would be killing it right now.

REDEFINE LUXURY

ainting on a $3,000 handbag might sound like a crazy idea, but artist Kris Cromier Ammon made an entire career of it.

“I originally started this company to be a calligraphy brand and I studied under a master calligrapher in Highland Park,” Ammon says.

Soon after starting her stationary business, a friend requested Ammon to paint an illustration on one of her designer handbags. She studied how to start painting on the risky canvas and her business took off.

Three years later, KCA Designs commissions hand painted designs and sells one-of-a-kind jewelry for high-end clients.

Ammon comes from a luxury goods background. After receiving a marketing degree from SMU, she worked in business analytics. The self-taught illustrator found her new business combined luxury marketing, sales and her craving for creativity.

“I went from a dual screen in Excel writing macros to painting on bags all day so it's quite a change, but I love it.”

Career in fashion: I worked at Neiman Marcus corporate for many years. I ran its email program and did business analytics. I've always been around fashion luxury and high-end, whether it's beauty or travel. I really like that space, so it was a natural evolution for me to tie all of that together.

Painting luxury goods: I really enjoyed doing it and just kept working to get better at it. There's a lot of pressure when you're painting on a canvas like that, especially super high-end bags. I did a lot of research, practicing in the background and quickly that took off. I've just expanded that over the years and added in the vintage pre-owned component to it as well.

Personal inspiration: When I was able to travel more, that’s where I would find a lot of ideas. Now, it's a little trickier. When I am watching movies, reading a book or going through magazines, I'm always looking. Something will catch my eye, so I'm snapping photos or sending myself email notes and reminders to look at things. I'm always just aware of my surroundings.

Routine for creative block: I am very routine-oriented. I like to get up and make my list to have a certain order for my day. If I am in a weird space where I'm not feeling the painting piece, I never force that. I learned early on when you do, it shows in your work. You have to be in the right headspace for it and create an environment for yourself where you feel good. If I wake up and I don't feel that great, I tend to use those hours to do shipping, marketing and project management.

24 lakehighlands.advocatemag.com november 2020

Craziest commission: I'm excited to explore this a little more with this client, he’s a really great client. He’s asked me if I would paint on his very high-end watch dial so we’re working through design ideas with him on that. Sometimes I’ll get really off-the-wall things, people want me to paint objects in their home. I usually just have to assess if it’s something that is in my wheelhouse and be honest with people from the beginning if I’m a good fit.

Favorite design: I really love skulls. I’m not a super girly girl, so I’m not usually one to put florals all over my own stuff. I love it, but just not for me. I have a signature skull design that I do and that is my most popular. I always make them slightly different. I never want it to be like a stencil that every single person gets the exact same.

Claim to fame: Two years ago, I was working with a local Dallas brand on painting denim jackets. They had me do some for the Kardashian kids, Stormi and True.

Advice to women starting businesses: In my tight circle, so many of my friends are small business owners, and I love having that support system. It’s really great to bounce ideas off them. Obviously, no one is doing the exact same thing as me, but it’s just a great way to get ideas and support.

Third place besides her studio and home: I am usually at my boyfriend’s house, which is my home away from home. We quarantined together. I brought everything over there, and I worked with him for months which was super fun. We had been dating for like a month and a half when quarantine hit. We were one of those couples that had to make a decision, are we going do this or not? So, let’s just go for it. Live dangerously.

COMING TOGETHER

How the neighborhood rallied for the Vickery Meadow Food Pantry

IN APRIL, AN SUV FILLED WITH TOILET PAPER drove down the highway as people honked and shouted. The commuters were enraged that some woman had stocked up on toilet paper during a pandemic supplies shortage.

They didn’t know that she wasn’t a toilet paper hoarder, but a volunteer headed to the Vickery Meadow Food Pantry.

The organization typically served 20 to 30 families once a month, but after COVID-19 they served between 150 and 200 families a week. The food pantry provides meals with the help of the North Texas Food Bank and local grocery stores.

Along with providing family boxes to clients, the VMFP needed additional equipment and new refrigerators and freezers to keep up with the growing amount of food. Luckily, the pantry was able to afford these things with help from neighbors.

“One thing we’ve been really fortunate about is that the neighborhood has been very generous,” VMFP treasurer Laura Huehn says. “Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church and Temple EmanuEl have been generous in donating resources. They did food drives early on for us.”

The two organizations collected 10,000 pounds of food and delivered it in 10 SUVs.

Volunteers Carol Weinstein, Deidra Cizon, Laura Huehn and Marguerite Marz of the Vickery Meadow Food Pantry.

“One entire SUV was macaroni and cheese, and one was tuna,” Huehn says. “They did all the sorting for us and we could just bring that in, and that was a huge help.”

The food pantry also received $50,000 in donations after City Councilmember Jennifer Staubach Gates mentioned the food pantry in her newsletter, and the call to action only took two days.

VMFP volunteers who were initially overwhelmed and frightened when the pandemic began, could

now afford weekly milk, eggs and other things that were never in budget.

Along with providing food, the pantry handed out vital information on COVID-19 in different languages for the community of immigrants in Vickery Meadow. The lack of information in Spanish or Burmese directly impacted essential workers employed at nearby meat factories.

“You get very close to the clients,” Huehn says. “One of the things that’s been interesting is through all of

this, even with masks on, we still know the clients. They know us and especially prior to this, when we really had a chance to shop with them, we got to know them.”

While none of the volunteers at VMFD was prepared for a natural disaster such as this, Huehn says that they are more prepared than ever.

“Not only that it’s nice to know the clients and to see the benefit, but also during times of crisis like this, to really see the whole community come together,” she says.

Seek first to understand, then to be understood

Staying neighborly by focusing on our common humanity

Regardless of the outcome of the national elections this month, half the country will be happy and the other half unhappy. That’s not new, but the degree of delight and despair may be.

We like to think the local level is different since some of our elections, such as school boards and propositions, are nonpartisan. Supposedly. We used to say all politics is local, but expanding national media outlets with points of view on the news and social media outlets with points of view that may be fake news, our neighborliness is waning and partisanship waxing.

It’s harder now to remain friends with people who differ from us politically. Politics may not be everything, but it has turned civic life into tribal warfare.

Is there any way out of this moral morass?

Faith communities incubate unity in diversity and can model the way forward for the rest of society. Don’t laugh. You may think we are a big part of the problem. Sometimes we are. But we have been practicing for centuries, albeit with mixed results; and, we’re still here. How have we lasted all the fights and feuds, the reformations and counter-reformations, the splits and splinters?

First, focus on our common humanity and our equal dignity. The language may differ slightly among our faith traditions, but a fundamental confession is that we are all children of God, image-bearers of the divine. No matter how diverse our ideas or way of life, God is making something of God’s presence known through each and every person. Which means we can’t dismiss one another without missing something God wants us to learn.

Second, come together. Talk to each other, don’t withdraw from each other. Look for the best, not the worst, in others. Do not characterize the convictions of someone else by the weirdest or wickedest of those who share them. You would not want someone to do that to you. What Ben Franklin said during the American

Revolution echoes still: “We must, indeed, all hang together or most assuredly, we shall all hang separately.”

Next, as Stephen Covey paraphrased St. Francis: “Seek first to understand, then to be understood.” If your chief goal is to persuade someone to think like you, you will only listen for an opening to pounce. When someone feels you have heard and understood, something intimate has happened. Knowing that someone has heard and understood you moves you closer, still.

Finally, accept that oneness is not sameness. We say in church that we are many members of one body. Each is different and important to the functioning whole. E pluribus unum — “out of many, one” — is America’s motto. Oneness does not mean everyone must assimilate into a single culture where all consent to a dominant story of America. We can tell different stories that can be equally true and mutually enriching.

Whether standing at attention or kneeling in protest, we do so together before the same flag as the anthem plays. O, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave … ?
