COMING AND GOING
[+] BARKING HOUND VILLAGE
A dog boarding and daycare facility owned by married couple Lisa and Jeremy Jones is going to be at 7606 Greenville Ave. The business will provide play groups, dog safety and first-aid certified staff.
[-] FISH BONE GRILL
The seafood restaurant and oyster bar closed last month after 37 years in business. Bill Hensley owned the restaurant. “We opened in 1983 with a lot of success, and the thing that made us unique at that time in this market is that we were an oyster bar,” Hensley told the Dallas Observer.
[+] YOGI’S HOME PLATE
Owner Dan Barbara moved his business from lower Greenville to our Creekside Center. “At the old place we had 3,400 square feet and people sometimes had to wait to get in,” Barbara says. “Here, we have 5,600 feet and capacity for 235 people.” Yogi’s is family-friendly and welcomes an after-church crowd or youth teams postgame, but the vibe changes around 7 p.m. each night to adults-only. The sports bar opens at 10 a.m. seven days a week and closes at midnight weekdays and at 2 a.m. Thursday through Saturday.

Did you know the Dallas Cowboys had a practice facility in the neighborhood?
Yes! We used to ride our bikes there, stand on the fence and watch practice, and talk with the players after practice as they walked to their cars. Much simpler times. Several of the players lived in Lake Highlands then, including Bob Breunig and Gene Stallings. —Bill Wachel

FOOD DELIVERY DRIVER SHOOTINGS. Two shootings involving food delivery happened in our neighborhood late last year. In the first incident on Dec. 9, a 22-year-old DoorDash driver was shot multiples times after an argument with 33-year-old Travis Jahns. The driver was taken to the hospital with injuries that weren’t life threatening. Jahns was charged with one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. On Dec. 10, a Papa John’s Pizza employee was delivering food when he shot two 15-year-olds who tried to rob him at gunpoint. The driver, who has a license to carry, fatally shot one, and the other was taken to the hospital.

William Davenport grew up in Lake Highlands, graduated from Lake Highlands High School in 1989 and attended Texas A&M University. He married his high school sweetheart, Lynn Strawn, and they moved back to the neighborhood after finishing college. His son, Jack, and daughter, Lily, followed in his Aggie footsteps, while his third son, Wilson, is a sophomore at LHHS. Davenport is the chief financial officer of Topgolf Entertainment Group.
What is your job at Topgolf?
I joined the company in 2013 as the CFO, and we have a much bigger company today than we did back then. I oversee the accounting department, finance department, legal department and our global supply chain.
What is the Topgolf culture?
It’s great. That was one of the things that attracted me to the company in the first place. It had a really cool culture, but also, I wanted to join a company in the early stages of growth so I could be a part of defining that culture. I was really fortunate to work for Brinker International for 13 years. They just had a fabulous culture, so I saw how powerful culture can be if used the right way. When we came to Topgolf, it was a lot of like-minded individuals that saw the power of having a great culture, so it’s fun. It’s loose. It’s kind of the “work hard, play hard” mentality. When I started, we had nine venues; today we have 58, and we are a much more complex business than we were back then. We want to have an open-door mentality. My office is glass; everything is out in the open. We want to respect people and help them realize their growth potential in a fun way.
Why do you think people like Topgolf?
Because it’s fun and inclusive. If you think about us as golf, golf is obviously very intimidating. It’s something that might be expensive. Myself, for example, I didn’t go to the original Topgolf for many years in Dallas because I’m not a golfer. I thought it was just about golf. It wasn’t until I was introduced to it that I realized it’s not just about golf. It’s about entertainment. It’s about having fun. We do feel like we are transforming the game of golf by making it more fun, more approachable. We know that over half of our guests tell us that their first time to play golf is by playing at a Topgolf, so we are helping the game of golf, but we really see ourselves as entertainment, and it’s much broader than that. For example, I had my daughter’s 13-year-old birthday party at Topgolf. None of the girls play golf. It was December, and it was cold, but they had a great time. When you go to Topgolf, you can see how kids and adults, golfers, non-golfers, everybody is there to have a good time. I think what
makes us unique is that it’s a social engagement experience, so we connect people.
What might people not know about the company?
If you’re from Lake Highlands, you probably only know the Park Lane venue, which is one of the first ones we built in the U.S., back in 2008. The Lake Highlands community has been incredibly supportive of it. But we’re much bigger than that. We focus on bringing technology and entertainment together with hospitality in lots of different formats. We have our Toptracer business, which is a company we acquired in 2013. If you watch golf on TV, it’s the trace of the ball that you see, so it makes broadcast golf a lot more interesting. And now we’re taking that technology, and we’re putting it in driving ranges around the world. We’re gamifying the experience in driving ranges and making it much more fun and inviting. The other business we have is Swing Suites. The Double Tree Hotel [on North Central Expressway] has one of our installations, so we do casinos, hotels, arenas, office buildings. This is a way that we’ve taken golf-simulator technology that another company makes, and we put our brand and our games on top of it. It’s a multi-sport simulator, so you can play dodgeball, soccer or baseball. Basically, we license that technology to all kinds of hospitality firms to attract more guests to their venues. Then we have international business. We are open in Australia. We’re going to open in Dubai [United Arab Emirates] and Monterrey [Mexico]. We have a media business too. We have an office in San Francisco that started with a video game. It’s the No. 1 realistic golf game on your phone called World Golf Tour.
Why do you make Lake Highlands home?
I love being near the lake; we live close to Flag Pole Hill, and I love being able to take our dog for a walk or run down at the lake. You feel like you’re in a small town while you’re still in the middle of Dallas. I think that’s unique, and that’s special, and there’s a community feel around Lake Highlands that you don’t get in other parts of the city or the country. It’s been a great place for us to raise our kids.

Nazca can easily accommodate gluten free or vegetarian requests, Barnes says.
“It’s all really bold flavors, but it’s also healthy as well,” he says. “I think that’s what works for us. We can do South American, but we can also keep it on the lighter, healthier side.”
For dessert, Nazca offers flan from East Dallas bakery Cheesecake Royale.
The restaurant also outsources brioche sandwich rolls from Dallas Gourmet Bakery.

High school sweethearts
While most teenagers are dealing with SATs, zits and embarrassing body odors, these high schoolers were also beginning relationships that would turn into lifelong partnerships. Here are their stories and advice.
Story by MARISSA ALVARADO
Generational thing
TRACY AND TINA COX (’77)
Tracy and Tina Cox started to get to know each other as sophomores in their French class in 1975. Tracy took Tina to homecoming and prom, but they dated around in between.
After graduating, they both attended Texas A&M University. Their relationship started to get serious, and just two years after graduating in ’81, they were married.
Returning to their home, Lake Highlands, the Coxes had their first son, Steve, in ’86 and daughter Alicia in ’88.
Steve Cox married his high school sweetheart, Cecilia Stewart. They both graduated from Lake Highlands in 2004. One of their classmates and good friends, Michael Goad, married Alicia when they reconnected after college.
Tracy says he’ll never forget when he had to call Steve and tell him that his sister was dating his friend, something Tracy wouldn’t have approved of when they were still in high school.
THEIR ADVICE: It’s all about commitment. You just commit to each other and commit to work through any and all issues and just love each other at all times.
16 lakehighlands.advocatemag.com february 2020
THEN
In sickness and in health
BILL (’89) AND RENEE (’87) BARFOOT
Bill and Renee met in the youth group at Lake Highlands Methodist Church during middle school. They started off as best friends, until one day Renee told her friend Tina, “I think that I like really like Bill Barfoot.” Unfortunately her friend also had eyes for Bill, but she graciously stepped aside and said, “I’ll let you have him.” To this day, Renee still jokes with her friend that she’s the reason she and Bill are happy.
However, after Bill came down with a case of the chicken pox, Renee broke up with him. “I cannot remember what in the world got into me, and I would kill one of my daughters if they did that to a boy now,” Renee says.
They got back together, broke up a few more times during high school and college, but broke that streak after getting engaged during Bill’s senior year of college.
Bill and Renee moved back to Lake Highlands and had their two daughters, Caroline who is a senior at LHHS and Ellakate who is a freshman.
A housefire recently damaged the Barfoots’ home.
“[It was] one of the biggest tests we’ve ever had in our relationship. He was such a rock, and I ended up having to handle a lot of the details. He just always reminded me what was important: That we still had our kids and each other,” Renee says. “We still find time to laugh and be silly.”
Their daughters have carried on that positive and resilient attitude.
Caroline wrote in her college admissions essay that if she could redo the past year, she wouldn’t change the
fire because it brought her family closer together. “If our marriage can survive me breaking up with him for having the chicken pox and our house burning down, then it could survive anything,” Renee says.
THEIR ADVICE: Trust is important. Don’t take anything too seriously and find the humor in every situation.

Band hall marriages last
CHARLIE (’79) AND MEREDITH STIMSON (’80)
Charlie and Meredith Stimson met in the Lake Highlands Junior High band hall. He played the saxophone, and she played bassoon. They started dating when Charlie was a junior, and Meredith was a sophomore.
Things started to get serious at the end of Charlie’s senior year. They went off to separate colleges. Meredith went to Texas A&M, and Charlie transferred there eventually. A couple years after graduation, they got married.
“She was really, really cute. Still is,” Charlie says. “I think we just hung around together in a friend group and got to know each other better there. Marriages made in the band hall last.”
Charlie’s sister, Susie, was class of ’74 and married her LHJH bandmate as well.
THEIR ADVICE: Forgive often. Show each other grace, and try to do things that aren’t just fun dates. Find out, “What’s he like when he’s frustrated?
What’s she like when she’s tired?”
That’s real life, more so than dating. Try to have a tender heart with one another.

Yin and yang
BONNIE AND IAN MADDISON (’14)
Who knew the 2010 Freshman Center production of “Once Upon a Mattress” would result in a marriage? Bonnie, the court jester, and Ian, the silent king, became good friends after their acting debuts but began dating a few years later during their junior year.
“My favorite thing about my husband is that he’s really funny,” Bonnie says.
One day during lunch, Ian had Bonnie laughing so hard that she spit green tea all over him and his math homework. He went to class next period having to explain to his teacher that his girlfriend’s spit had soaked his homework.
On Feb. 23, 2019, the young couple showed their old souls in their vintage-inspired wedding at the historical Daniel H. Caswell House in Austin.
The bride wore a vintage inspired gown, and the groom wore a red velvet tux jacket, and a jazz band played tunes for the cocktail hour.
Bonnie is working on her Master of Arts in mental health counseling at St. Edward’s University. Ian works at Emmer and Rye restaurant and is applying to the
Austin Fire Department.
“I love that he’s very calm and levelheaded, and we’re very yin and yang,” Bonnie says. “He keeps me grounded, but I’m able to get him excited about things that he’s never gotten excited about.”
THEIR ADVICE: You have to stop expecting your partner to read your mind. A lot of people have this expectation that their partner will know what they want and how they want to be loved. You have to put it out there in black and white what you want from your partner. Everyone has a different love language. Everyone needs to be loved differently.

Lake Highlands is their nest
GABI AND WILL BUEHRING (’02)
Gabi and Will met during their first class at the Freshman Center, biology. Gabi was coming from St. Patrick Catholic School and Will from LHJH.
They went on their first date to watch the movie “The Skulls” and ended up holding hands for the first time. What they didn’t know was that Will’s mother, father and brother were sitting just outside the movie theater waiting for Will. He had accidentally missed his shift at work, so Gabi rode home in his mom’s minivan.
Fortunately, Will kept his job at NorthPark where Gabi also worked throughout high school. They often took lunch breaks together.
On June 5, 2003, the couple got engaged, and they married a few years later. They bought their first home in Lake Highlands, and they now have three children: Liam, 9, Jackson, 7, and Ella, 1.
“Everything we’ve ever done in our life has been in Lake Highlands,” Gabi says.
The couple is active in the community. Gabi joined Lake Highlands Early Childhood PTA, the 100 Women of Lake Highlands and just recently, the Junior Women’s League. Will has been active in the Knights of Columbus for five years. They were initial investors in Cedar & Vine Community Kitchen and Cocktails.
Gabi and Bill also won the longest couple award at their 10-year high school reunion.
“We grew up together. We went from being children to adults. We had to learn how to grow and become our separate selves and appreciate our separate selves,” Gabi says.
THEIR ADVICE: You can’t change anyone; you fell in love with them for who they are. Happy wife, happy life.

DAVID AND LISA PRUSHA (’83)
David and Lisa started dating the summer before their senior year. They met through their shared sport, club soccer.
Following graduation, the pair attended Texas A&M and graduated in ’87. Lisa taught at Skyview Elementary, and David still works as an architect at HKS, Inc.
They have a daughter, Brynn, who is 27 and a son, Evan, who is 24. Growing up, Lisa says they never needed a babysitter because both sets of grandparents stayed in the Lake Highlands area.
“Some people say it’s a disadvantage, but it’s been an advantage for us,” Lisa says. “We’re able to laugh and reminisce about things that happened in high school. We had that six-year relationship.”
She says having a solid friendship before making those adult choices was a perk of a high school relationship.
THEIR ADVICE: Keep a sense of humor with yourself and your relationship. Keep the friendship in your relationship.
Second chance
DOUG (’78) AND LUANN BERGMAN (’79)
Walking to an assembly in 1976, Doug heard someone ask, “Are you going downtown?” Doug says he turned around and everything turned black and white when he saw LuAnn.
Doug ended up searching for LuAnn, only to find out that she was sick and out of school for an entire month. When she returned, Doug asked LuAnn out, but after showing up to her house, he realized that she had stood him up. LuAnn’s dad did magic tricks to occupy Doug. “But I never forgot about her,” Doug says.
Fast forward a few years later. It was Memorial Day weekend, and Doug’s friend Carter approached LuAnn. They still don’t know how, but the friend remembered that she was the girl who stood Doug up all those years ago. LuAnn said, “No, that couldn’t be me,” but when Doug mentioned her dad doing magic tricks, she knew it was true. Quickly after their reintroduction, they became good friends.
LuAnn called Doug to keep her company because she was nervous on her first night in her new apartment, and he never left. They went on to become best friends and partners, both in life and business. They run a video production company together.
22 lakehighlands.advocatemag.com february 2020
THEN
After Doug’s mother was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2016, they moved back into her Lake Highlands home to take care of her, and they still live in the home today.
THEIR ADVICE: Be friends. Trust each other. Know each other. Don’t sweat the small stuff. Say “please” and “thank you.” Respect each other.

A MAN SITS ON THE BENCH at the bus stop with his head in his hands as he begins to weep. In the span of two and a half hours, he’s been denied housing, a job and a loan. Down to his last pennies, he doesn’t know what to do.
Then the simulation ends, and the man is back to being a Richardson ISD teacher participating in the Cost of Poverty Experience at Mockingbird Community Church.
The role-playing exercise assigns participants a new identity, occupation and level of education. They are then asked to live a month in those shoes while navigating obstacles that are common in a low-income environment.
The scenarios that ensue are fake,
but the tears shed are often real.
“You have to help [participants] understand what real people are facing,” says Rebecca Walls, who facilitates the Cost of Poverty Experience, also called COPE.
The simulation starts in a large room at Mockingbird Community Church on Ellsworth Avenue. The rooms surrounding the entry have been converted into a school, grocery store, pawnshop, health clinic, bank and more. There, participants face predatory lenders, negligent landlords and discriminatory judges.
“The first few times we did it, every time was so serious,” Walls says. “I could hardly talk when it was over. If I’m a landlord, and people want to pay

partial rent, I have to say, ‘I’m a busy person. I’m not going to be here for you to come by twice in a month.’ Then they get evicted, and I have to change the locks and move their junk to the curb.
“It took me a while to follow the rules — to actually do what is supposed to happen instead of giving people a break all the time.”
COPE started in 2016 as a program of Unite Greater Dallas, a nonprofit that connects church leaders with community groups to meet the needs of the city. The first participants were churchgoers, followed by teachers and administrators.
Walls has led the simulation for educators at more than 10 RISD schools,

in addition to some in Fort Worth, Carrolton and Farmers Branch. A group of Dallas ISD principals has also completed the experience.
“What I’ve come to understand is that young teachers are reluctant to go into really hard situations because they haven’t been equipped and encouraged to go that route,” Walls says. “If they do go there, they have to develop a layer of protection around their hearts to cope with what they’re
seeing. We’re chipping away at that protection.”
The goal isn’t for teachers to lower academic expectations for low-income students, but to rekindle empathy that will affect how they make decisions. For example, impoverished students without money for vacation may feel left out by a writing prompt, such as “Where did you travel this summer?” Armed with that knowledge, teachers could choose a more inclusive topic.
After staff experience the simulation, Walls hopes community partners will come alongside them to provide supplemental volunteers and resources when the schools fall short.
“When a district says, ‘We wish we could do more, but we don’t have the resources,’ that’s exactly what the community needs to hear,” Walls says. “Our job is for the community to come around the families and help them figure out how to make life work.”

10 TIPS FOR STARTING A WORKOUT ROUTINE
A boot camp trainer shares her tips for starting a routine
Carol Thomas is a certified personal trainer who trains at Breakaway Sport + Fitness, and she also runs the Breakaway Boot Camp. Thomas coaches clients online and works with athletes and teams to prevent injuries, especially, the risk of knee injuries in female athletes. Here are her 10 tips:
1 Plan and be purposeful.
Make sure to calendar your workouts. If you put them on your calendar, you’ll have a spot in your day to do it.
2 Find a friend or a workout buddy.
You have a much greater chance of success with accountability. Get the support of your family, so they know what you’re doing and encourage you.
3
Keep a fitness journal.
You can visually see your progress. It gives you that encouragement when you can visually see. Some people like making notes about how they felt, what they wore and the circumstance.

4 Find exercise you enjoy and do that. If you’re not a morning person, don’t try to do a 5 a.m. workout. There are so many other things you can do. You name it, we have it. It’s just really important to find something you enjoy so that you’re more likely to stick with it long term.
5 Set smart goals.
Know why you’re making a change and where you want to be, but those goals need to be the S.M.A.R.T. goals, which stands for specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely. Recognize and reward your progress when you set those goals
6 Make sure you include strength and cardio in your workouts each week. The recommended cardio is 150 minutes per week. You can break that up however you want. The main point is to add both strength and cardio because you really do need both of those in your exercise routine.
7 Go at a moderate pace. Start slow and build up to avoid burnout. Avoid being so sore on day two that you don’t even get to the gym. One of the most common mistakes is to go all out that first two days and then not be able to walk the third day. Avoid burnout and sorenes to prevent injury.
8 Sleep, and respect recovery days. You’ve got to get your sleep. I think the recommended amount is seven to eight hours for adults. Some people need eight hours, some need nine. Everybody’s different, but most of us don’t get enough sleep. Respect off days because part of working out is to make sure your body recovers from your workout.
9 Pair workouts with healthy meals. Make sure what you’re eating is healthy.
10 Get outside when you can. Getting outside boosts your mood, and you get vitamin D from the sun. There’s something about being outside and not being stuck in a gym.

Active shooter drills at church?
Threats hitting closer to home force faith communities to take stock
“My kids have to go through active shooter drills in school just to learn. Am I going to have to go through active shooter drills in church just to pray?”
That’s the question pastors, priests, rabbis and imams have been fielding since December’s church shooting in Fort Worth. Religious communities are once again looking at their security protocols to ensure they can assure worshippers they will be safe.
Can I just confess my frustration that it has come to this? Every time I go through a TSA line at the airport and have to take my shoes off, I think about how one terrorist with a bomb in his shoe forever altered the experience of millions of travelers. A few angry men who shot up churches, synagogues and mosques have sent a chill up the spine of worshippers everywhere. They have forced faith leaders to address matters they weren’t trained for.
No two responses to this will be the same. It’s impossible to calibrate the precise balance between practical responsibility and spiritual freedom, so I am not telling every clergy leader or lay leader what they ought to decide about this. Nonetheless, here’s part of what I wrote to our congregation:
“I want to call attention to a distinction I weigh in my own mind spiritually between ‘safety’ and ‘security.’ Safety procedures are wise and practical. When we love one another, we want to protect each other from potential accidents and maliciously minded intruders. We know that deaths from firearms have more than doubled in Texas in the past 20 years. We are seeing more frequent attacks in houses of worship. Most of those are motivated by hate toward racial and religious minorities, but some have occurred at churches not unlike our own. The causes are not easily identified, although the shooters are usually angry
men with a history of violence, as was the case with the assailant in Fort Worth.
“Security involves a higher level of protection than safety, both practically and philosophically. Being a church, we want to live in a way that promotes our values of welcoming strangers, loving our neighbors and practicing nonviolent ways of living. We are a peaceable people, and we want to internalize our understanding that true security is found only in God. We will never be completely secure in this life, no matter our defensive preparations. We do not want our church to become an armed fortress or for a spirit of fear to become pervasive among us.”

We become what we do. We need to be careful, therefore, to do what we want to become.
Reasonable precautions in the face of growing safety concerns are good spiritual policy. At the same time, faith communities may be the last refuge for those who want a peek at how people ruled by love, and not fear, live.
Our church will revisit our readiness to make sure we’re ready for anyone who visits, in good faith or bad.
