GREAT GRADS

FRANKLIN OKAM, known a ectionately as Big Frank when he dominated the gridiron at Wildcat Stadium, has been hired as defensive line coach for the Carolina Panthers. He coached Baylor University’s D-line for the last two years under the leadership of former head coach MATT RHULE and will follow Rhule to Carolina and the NFL. Okam graduated in the top 5 percent of his LHHS class in 2004 and was a starter for the 2005 University of Texas Longhorns team that won the national championship. He was drafted by the Houston Texans and later played for the Seahawks and Bucs. He coached the defensive line at Rice while earning a master’s degree.

After graduating from LHHS and the University of Texas in Austin, KELSEY LLOYD bolted for Los Angeles and began working in the movie industry. Her latest project, “Small Engine Repair,” will debut at SXSW in March. The film, written, directed and starring JOHN POLLONO, was shot last February and March. Lloyd originally came onboard as the director’s assistant but was so heavily involved she was credited as associate producer.

BOOBY TRAPS. While avoiding low-hanging branches and other obstacles on bike trails, cyclists must also watch out for a new sinister trap. Several cycling groups have reported seeing twine intentionally strung across the Ridgewood and SoPac trails in Lake Highlands and Lakewood. The twine blends in so well with the scenery that it becomes di cult for cyclists to see. Others have seen several ropes crossing the trails near White Rock Lake and removed them.

HOW NEIGHBORS ARE COPING AFTER A DEVASTATING APARTMENT FIRE

AT 1 IN THE MORNING, neighbors of Sable Ridge woke to fire, smoke and the sound of pounding. They scrambled to evacuate the building. Desperate, one man broke a bedroom window to wake a sleeping neighbor. Another threw her children out of a window.

Thanksgiving week became a nightmare for the 90 displaced residents who escaped with their lives but not much else.

requests days before the fire. Tan denies responsibility and says the fire also devastated her.

“When [neighbor] Charles woke me up, he knocked at my door, threw me his naked baby and looked back,” Martin says. “He said, ‘Do you see this?’ The whole staircase was engulfed.”

Martin says when the stove and refrigerator in her apartment blew out days before, she knew something was wrong. She is an independent contractor working for Ron Williams Construction, a firm that specializes in fire, water,

“I’ve thrown my breakers. There is something going on,” she remembers thinking. “Stuff like that doesn’t just happen. You don’t just have major appliances blowing out. It’s a fire hazard.”

After the fire, Martin set up camp in an empty apartment to help neighbors who needed assistance verifying paperwork to receive help from Red Cross. Martin’s fellow New Life Communty Church members also came to help by donating cleaning supplies, hygiene products, clothing and bedding.

“When the fire was at my neighbors, I grabbed my daughter and I asked God for grace, not favor. I asked him to help me help as many people as I can, as many people who would take it,” she says.

A few days after the fire, the apartment complex was bulldozed. Many residents were left with questions and concerns. Martin is suing her landlord for personal injury because she had filed a maintenance request without a proper response within the allotted 48 hours. Just 176 hours later, the apartment fire started.

“If she wants to sue, she should sue Sable Ridge HOA, not me,” Tan says. “I have nothing to do with it. I lost, too, like everyone. It was very unfortunate for everyone. Thank God, no one was hurt.”

The fire report was released and read, “Based on witness accounts and fire patterns, it is most probable that the fire was caused by an electrical short between the first and second floors. The cause of fire will remain undetermined.”

While Martin’s security deposit has not been restored, she still considers herself lucky to have gotten back on her feet and provide help for others.

CRAFTED FOR YOU

CRAFT BOBA TEA, formerly inside Zapp Kitchen, has a new storefront, and the business has expanded to include healthy drink options.

“I’ve always loved drinking bubble tea,” owner Ashley Singharaj says. “I just want to bring the fun back into bubble tea. I want people to know that you can make your bubble tea a healthier drink option and not consider it a dessert.”

Singharaj has experience in the health business. After working as a senior-level health care auditor, she realized she wanted to do something she was passionate about.

“I was fed up working for corporate, and I wanted to work hard for myself,” Singharaj says.

At Craft Boba Tea, she uses sugar cane instead of fructose in her bubble tea.

“I don’t want people to feel guilty drinking our drinks,” she says. “I want them to feel like it’s refreshing.”

Craft Boba Tea also added freshpressed juices and smoothies to the menu. Smoothies are made of fruits with no sherbet, sorbet or purees.

The Simply Green smoothie blends spinach, banana, mango and orange juice.

“My favorite is the Winter Melon milk tea,” Singharaj says. “It tastes like caramel.”

MARK BARNETT always dreamed of living on a cul-desac. So, when he and his wife, Kristen, saw a lot for sale in Lake Ridge Estates, they knew it was their chance to build the home they’d always wanted.

“We’ve had really nice houses, but they haven’t been efficient,” Kristen says. “The layout hasn’t worked for us, and we’ve had space we didn’t use. My husband always really wanted to build one ourselves and get it exactly how we wanted.”

The couple knew they wanted to stay in Lake Highlands after living in the neighborhood for 13 years. “We love the community. We love the people. The schools are great,” she says. “We knew we wanted to stay here.”

The Barnetts placed an offer and got the house. They decided to work with architect Thad Reeves after seeing his work on an American Institute of Architects home tour, not realizing that their future home would be on the 2019 tour.

Inspired by clean lines, the two centered on midcentury modern homes. Natural light is the highlight of the home. Reeves and fellow architect Timothy Phillips were captivated by the neighborhood’s trees and built windows to take advantage of the view. Every room emphasizes the trees.

“You kind of lose sight that you’re in the middle of this really busy neighborhood sometimes, which I love,” Kristen says.

The Barnett family took a leap of faith when architects approached them about featuring black cabinets and appliances in the kitchen. “They said, ‘This is what I think you should do,’ and we were like, ‘OK, we’re going to trust you.’ And it worked out great,” Kristen says.

The combination of black, white and wood offset each other in a surprisingly different way. The couple’s furniture is square, with clean lines and walnut legs.

The Barnetts’ favorite space? The media room. “We wanted somewhere that we could gather as a family, and [our kids would] want to come down and hang out with us,” she says. “It’s served that exact purpose. We spend a lot of time in here as a family, more so than we did in our previous house.”

WHO NEEDS TO VOYAGE to a bird sanctuary when you can get your feather fix at White Rock Lake?

My favorite spot is Pelican Point on the east coast. I always go there first to see what birds are hanging out. It’s the best place to catch them flying or landing. The type and number of birds vary by time of day and season.I have seen egrets, cormorants, pelicans, ducks, geese, herons, avocets and killdeer. I love the pelicans’ huge wingspan and giant bills. The egrets with their long legs and white feathers are elegant. And the coloring of the wood ducks seems almost unreal.

My camera is a Fuji XT-2 with a Fuji XF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 lens with a 2x extender. I use zoom lenses because they allow a quick change in focal length to capture the action. I like to shoot tight closeups to capture the fine detail of feathers, an interesting beak or webbed foot.I focus on the birds’ eyes just as I would a human subject. I also practice a lot. It is not uncommon for me to shoot 500 to 1,000 images in one afternoon.

I am just an amateur birder, learning as I go, but every outing to White Rock Lake only makes me want to return again and again.
