STAR STUDENT
CHLOE WILLIS doesn’t take “No” for an answer. She was the Lake Highlands Junior High mascot before starting Lake Highlands High School. The school traditionally didn’t allow freshmen to be the Wildcat mascot. However, Willis did not want to take a break from being a mascot, and she petitioned for the position. Her wish was granted. A rising senior, this will be her fifth season as the mascot. Look for her on the sidelines.

INVEST IN YOURSELF
This LHHS alumna went from working with big-name artists to sleeping on airport couches as she pitched to investors. Now she runs a multimillion-dollar investment company.
TREE CARE SPECIALISTS
We
worse
Not many LHHS alumni can say they’ve watched Pharrell perform at Coachella with Beyoncé and Jay-Z, but that’s just one of the many adventures that Arlan Hamilton has encountered during her career. Hamilton worked as a tour manager for Norwegian pop punk band goldenboy. She climbed the ladder to work as production coordinator for big names like Jason Derulo, Toni Braxton and Kirk Franklin. While working on tours, she noticed capital investments were only being made to a certain demographic. So Hamilton flew to Silicon Valley to start her venture capital firm, Backstage Capital, dedicated to investing in people of color, women and those who identify as LGBTQ. Hamilton identifies with all three. The company has raised more than $7 million and invested in more than 130 startups.
On touring with goldenboy in her early 20s: I taught myself how to book tours. I booked them two summer tours in a row. I brought them out here and went on tour. It was one of the most fun times of my life. You’re on the road with these guys, and they’re wacky and playing music. You’re meeting new people every day.
On working as a production coordinator for Kirk Franklin: I actually worked with Kirk a couple of times. One time we were on tour for Live Nation, and I was the production coordinator for a big gospel tour. Before that, I was his talent wrangler for a TV show called, “Sunday’s Best” for BET. I was assigned to him directly because of my tone. I can calm people down and be measured in situations, and he thought it was professional.
How her career in entertainment led to investment banking: I was noticing people like Ashton Kutcher, Ellen DeGeneres and Justin Bieber making investments in companies in Silicon Valley. I realized that most of the funding goes to white men. Most of this funding, all of these millions of dollars, are going to very specific people. The diversity is there. Diverse founders of companies are making things, but the funding for it was just, “OK, we’re going to give it to anyone who looks like Mark Zuckerberg.”
On going to Silicon Valley: It was about trying to raise capital to invest in other people. It was tough. It was a lot of hard work … going to new people, saying, “You are rich. This is something that is probably going to be interesting, and you should pay attention.” Finally, a couple of people started to get it, and then a couple more … and that turned into putting several of them together, and I raised a few million dollars. It’s not an overnight thing at all.
Her new book, “It’s About Damn Time”: It’s turned out to be part memoir, part self-help and part business. I think it’s for people who feel underestimated. The main audience is people who want to start companies or who are starting companies already. They feel like they are overlooked, so a lot of people who read the book are women of color. I have white men who will read the book, and they’ll say, “I didn’t expect to resonate so much.” I read a bunch of books by white men in business, and I didn’t think twice about it, so it’s probably a good idea for white men to read books by black women in business.
On her “side fund” with Mark Cuban: Last year, he put a million dollars into it. He said, “Just invest in whatever you want to invest in.” We co-manage. We’ve invested in 12 companies. On our horizon is to continue to work together and think of ways that we can add value to Dallas.
Women who inspire her: My mom, Mrs. Earline Sims. She lives in Dallas; she brought us up there. I look up to her the most. I also look up to people like Janet Jackson, who I’ve looked up to for most of my life. And all of the women I’ve been able to invest in.
The famous alumni she would work with:
I would love to connect with St. Vincent, Annie. I remember I ran into her in the hallway once. She was sitting on the ground in front of lockers, and I remember she would go to New York every once in a while to do modeling. I think we would have a lot in common.
This interview has been edited for clarity and brevity.
“I read a bunch of books by white men in business, and I didn’t think twice about it, so it’s probably a good idea for white men to read books by black women in business.”
DID YOU KNOW?
The art on SoCo’s walls are created by Jonny Bean and they are for sale.
IF THERE’S ANYONE YOU CAN TRUST WITH GOOD COFFEE , it’s Jonny Bean and his partner Charles Bader.
The two come from Seattle, coffee capital of the United States.
“When Charlie and I moved here, the Southern hospitality was just really refreshing and so we wanted to go with that theme,” Bean says.
SoCo Southern Comfort Coffee House and Bistro is an ode to that, along with the owners’ friendliness.
“We strive daily trying to make sure that we’re the best that we can be in customer service,” Bean says. “The customers are the ones who make you. We create the environment for them and then they keep us going.”
Switching to takeout only during the coronavirus pandemic was challenging for the owners because of their mission to create an experience for customers.
“That’s half the fun, plating it and making it beautiful,” Bean says.
Although they missed having people dining in, they’ve engaged customers who still come inside to order food and have stayed gracious through the experience.
The bistro is one of the newest additions to the Lakeridge Village shopping center.
“It’s a community of its own. As the business owners we’re building our own community within a community,” he says. “Supporting each other and helping each other get through.”
The SoCo menu was inspired by the owners’ favorite foods.
“I feel like I’m sharing it with the world,” Bean says. “We spend a lot of time developing the recipes and trying to improve daily.”
The avocado toast with baby arugula, thinly sliced radishes, pickled red onion, an egg and chili is popular among the Lake Highlands crowd.
Another favorite is the SoCo crispy fried chicken sandwich with stacked mixed greens, queso, red onions and tomato.
The pastries are made in-house.
“The Lake Highlands ladies love our scones,” Bean says. “They’re a little bit possessive of them, in a good way.”
Sticky buns are also popular.
The bistro’s coffee comes from Seattle Café Vivace, a brand that Bean says he’s been drinking since he was 18 years old.
“Everything we do, there’s a lot of thought put into it and love into it,” Bean says. “It’s about passion of food, conversing and coming to a place and enjoying your time together. That’s the whole importance, making a great environment for people to enjoy their life because God knows we need it.”

Fierce FEMALES
Five resilient, persistent, innovative women who are taking charge.
Troop Manager
LOWRY MANDERS
ho is raising the next generation of fierce females?
Lowry Manders is using her position as the manager of Lake Highlands Girl Scout service unit No. 165 to teach girls about social justice, feminism and community service. The troop focuses on volunteering at the intensive memory care unit at the Village of Lake Highlands senior center. Since the coronavirus pandemic started, Manders also started filming YouTube videos called “Strong Girl Story-Time” to connect with her troop members while encouraging them to hear the stories of women like Hellen Keller and Wilma Rudolph. Using
her experience as a music teacher, she’s found creative ways to empower the girls to serve. Manders also recently created the Facebook group “Lake Highlands Area Moms Against Racism” which garnered 1,000 members in its first week. She lives in Lake Highlands with her husband, Dustin, 13-year-old son Michael James, and 11-year-old daughter Ellie.
100th anniversary of the 19th amendment. We’ll feature Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, but also Barbara Jordan. I’m intentional about choosing diverse women.
On the “3 C’s Book Club”: The three C’s are courageous, competence and character. We’ll do some online conversations this summer. We are going to celebrate the
The troop’s latest service: March 7 was our first community day of service. It helped the girls come together, but it also helped give us exposure to the Lake Highlands community. We had over 100 girls, Girl Scouts and their families come together for a big rally. Then we went out into the community, divided up and served more than 18 different nonprofit organizations. Some of the girls made gift baskets for Pamper Lake Highlands and delivered them. They made homeless kits for The Stewpot. They took cans to Feed Lake Highlands. It exposed the girls to different nonprofits in our community, which is so important. We came back together to celebrate the Girl Scouts’ 108th birthday with a cake.
The most important thing to teach girls: I want to teach girls how to advocate for themselves, how to use their voices. I
“It’s about raising girls who think for themselves, do for themselves, choose for themselves.”
teach them that word, I teach my daughter and the girls I work with that word. It means to use your voice for the benefit of yourself. Stand up for yourself; use your big girl voice to advocate for others and each other.
The Girl Scout motto: Founder Juliette Low created our motto, “Do a good turn daily.” We teach the girls to say the motto when they do a little circle, turn themselves around, do a good turn daily. That’s what we’re trying to embody as getting out there and doing good things for other people.
The biggest misconceptions about Girl Scouts: A misconception is that it’s only little white girls. I’m trying to help change that. It’s not all about cookies and crafts; it’s so much more. It’s about raising girls who think for themselves, do for themselves, choose for themselves. It’s for girls who are leaders. We teach girls not to play into the idea that is often portrayed in the culture of tearing each other down, being catty, manipulative and selfish.
Misconceptions about you: I have a gift for working with children, and I sing precious little songs. I’m very loving. But just because I’m like that doesn’t mean I’m not intelligent and have strong opinions and reasons for the things that I’m doing. A common misconception about women is if they are sweet and loving that there’s not substance to them. Just because you’re kind doesn’t mean you’re not tough.
Best advice: Maya Angelou said, “When people show you who they are, believe them,” whether it’s a person you are working with, a presidential candidate, an acquaintance, or a potential mate.
How she would like to be remembered: A quote by John Wesley says, “Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can.” I just love that quote, and I feel like it’s what drives me. I have one life to live and I’m trying to make all the difference that I can.
Nonprofit Revolutionary MARTHA STOWE
artha Stowe has been the executive director of the Vickery Meadow Youth Development program for the past 13 years. After her experience in social work, she was given the opportunity to start a foundation to help the Vickery Meadow neighborhood. While the program’s kids have gone on to colleges, master’s programs and promising careers, the work is always evolving. Recently, the foundation was able to set up a COVID-19 testing site in the neighborhood due to the high cases of Burmese workers in the nearby factories. There are also programs for elementary and middle school children, such as a robotics team and grade level reading initiatives. Besides her work, Stowe says she is most proud of her husband, Ken Benson.
Working with the Vickery Meadow youth: The last Census told us about 8,000 kids live in this neighborhood. It’s a very young neighborhood, and it’s all apartments. Part of my job is to figure out what the needs are in the community and then
help bring in the things to address those needs. We worked collaboratively with everybody in the community, but one of the things that we found out quickly was the middle school had programs for kids who don’t do well but it didn’t have anything for kids who have a lot of potential. One of our major programs is Eagle scholars. The program works with kids after the sixth grade and they stay in it until they graduate from high school. We help them through college as well. This gives them exposure to careers, various skills like public speaking, time management, how to network — all the soft skills that kids need to succeed in college. They get help with writing essays, applications and scholarships. Our kids are from about 30 different countries, so we try to give them exposure to social situations and educational, enrichment activities.
Why it’s important: I grew up with parents who were able to take me to classes and do summer camps and travel. We try to provide activities for these kids that their parents can’t afford.
“Just because someone doesn’t have English as a first language, doesn’t mean they don’t have an incredible amount to say and good things to say.”
Honestly, their parents work so much that a lot of times they’re not available to do these kinds of things. We’re trying to give them all those advantages as well.
Proudest accomplishment: Just because someone is low-income doesn’t mean they aren’t smart and talented. I’m most proud that we are able to help these kids find ways to be creative, do things, learn things and move beyond their own mental limitations. We’ve got kids who’ve graduated, gotten master’s degrees and gone back to their countries to be professionals. We’ve got just so many great stories of things these kids have been able to accomplish.
Most challenging aspect: Other people’s attitudes of not understanding that just because someone doesn’t have English as a first language doesn’t mean they don’t have an incredible amount to say. Understanding that our kids may look like a teenager of color, which may look scary to you, but actually it’s a really bright teenager who’s a great artist. One of the joys is that no matter where we take the kids, we hear back, “The nicest group of kids.”
Misconceptions that people have about the foundation: For nonprofits, people have a lot of misconceptions that it’s easy work. We base everything we do on research and on data. This isn’t just a bunch of “do-gooders” doing what’s fun or feels good. We really are based on science and trying to use the best information possible to make the best decisions we can.
Greatest influence: Mother Teresa by far. When I was in college, my mom gave me a book on Mother Teresa. When I wanted to drop out of college, she said, “Well, Mother Teresa went to college.” I was actually able to go visit Mother Teresa in India.
Dinner with any living person: If Dirk Nowitzki wasn’t available, probably Madeleine Albright. I think she’s incredibly bright, brave and has simplified leadership.
Favorite image of Vickery Meadow: I love the diversity of Vickery Meadow. You can walk down the street and see people in three different kinds of dress. It’s just so different than much of Dallas. The diversity is enriching, and the kids get great experiences learning each other’s languages, foods and dance.
Lung Cancer?
Entrepreneur CARLEY SEALE
arley Seale always dreamed of owning her own retail store. While attending the University of Oklahoma, she was able to work at a store called Harold’s where the owner Harold Powell was her mentor. He urged Seale to get a degree in accounting so she could learn the business side of her profession. After working in accounting, she knew that she still yearned to own her own business. “I went into accounting and was miserable,” Seale says. “I did not like being told where to be and what to do. I learned that I was an entrepreneur and couldn’t work for other people.” Seale now owns Favor the Kind, a lifestyle boutique that has expanded from East Dallas to Houston and Crested Butte, Colorado. Seale also opened up Roam Fine Goods in Preston Royal Center. She works with her husband, Johnny. Her favorite spot in the neighborhood is White Rock Stables, where she keeps her horse.
How she pivoted the business: The first thing that I did was assess what we had that had value in the moment, what was relevant and then we ignored everything else. Our brand is about generating joy and kindness. If we can sink into our mission and just do that, I’ll be satisfied because that’s what we’re here for. We started as a gift store and we looked at our surroundings and what products we had, and it makes your stomach hurt to think we are canceling orders. We created care packages that were relevant to the situation. We made one that you would give to your friends that got laid off, something for an essential worker. We had one that was all about the F word because there’s nothing else to say. We call them boxes of joy, and we sold out in a day. Misconceptions about the store: We have such a broad mix of products; we have $500 dresses next to $40 dresses. If you’re going to walk through the store, you’re going to pick up the $500 dress because it’s gorgeous, and if my team hasn’t engaged fast enough, you might leave there thinking that store isn’t for you. You have to spend a little time in there and engage with the sales staff to know there’s a spot for you. That’s my biggest challenge as an owner, teaching my staff that you have to engage and ask people what they’re there for because we’re really able to serve so many different needs.
How she got started: I went into medical sales and that’s where I learned a lot about sales, relationships and customer service. I was working like a dog and my heart wasn’t in it. So, I gave up that career, which was crazy because it was such a hard field to get into. We rented this tattoo parlor that had gone under on Bonita Avenue. It was a shack, but I didn’t want to get any investors. I didn’t want to borrow a bunch of money because I had no idea if it was going to work. I just wanted to give it a shot. We started off stretching out what we had and just built it from there.
Surviving COVID-19: I felt equipped to navigate it to the best of my abilities and all the experience of the past 13 years. I had the skills, leadership, communication systems and everything ready to handle COVID. We laid off 75% of our team, and it left nine employees plus Johnny and me. We just had everyone hunker down and we’ve pivoted, tossed and turned and shaped shifted. We keep going back to work every day.
What she looks for in an employee: I look for two things. One is servant heartedness. Retail is about serving customers and it’s not about your own outfit or that you love fashion; it’s about catering and serving. The second quality is that we are a small business and you have to wear many hats. Be able to prioritize. Besides work, what she’s most proud of: My family. I have two boys and six pets. My husband, Johnny, works with me and we run the business together. I’m definitely the one that is the main decision maker, but I think it’s rare for couples to be able to run a business, be married, have a family and be successful. I feel pretty lucky that we do it and do it well.
The best gift she’s ever received: After my mom passed away, my mother-in-law had a necklace made for me. It has words from my mom’s homily on it, just little reminders about my mom’s gifts, strengths and legacy. It was extremely thoughtful, and it was something I cherish.
“Our brand is about generating joy and kindness.”

WORSHIP
By GEORGE MASONDallas on the brink
Will this time be different? Depends.
The killing of an African-American man named George Floyd by a white Minneapolis police officer has set off protests, along with some rioting and looting, in cities across America. Sustained protests, rather than the one-and-done versions of the past, suggest something durable is afoot. The call for racial justice is loud, and demands for change are specific. It feels like we’ve been here many times before, but we may be on the brink of something new and good.
I have never seen so many white people turning up in the streets and tuning in on their screens. They are using phrases like “End Systemic Racism,” “Black Lives Matter” and “No Justice, No Peace” with fluency. They are learning to listen to the stories of black neighbors and to let black activists lead. This is different.
Faith leaders in Dallas are reaching out from their siloed groupings — Jews, Christians and Muslims; conservative, moderate and progressive; black, brown and white — and finding common cause. Even white and black evangelical Christians are speaking up together, recognizing that silence has been complicity. Faith communities are not just incubators for eternity. They are agents of eternity now.
Dallas is a deeply segregated city, which black and Latin residents feel daily. White residents seldom see it. When 85 percent of the tax base is in the predominantly white side north of Interstate 30, something is amiss.
This didn’t happen by accident. North Dallas residents aren’t more genetically predisposed to hard work and success than those in South Dallas. In the 100-yard dash to prosperity, we didn’t all have the same starting line. Yet the myth of equal opportunity continues to rule our everyday lives.
If this time is different, things have to change in Dallas. Hearts are changing, but things have to change before hearts. Jesus
said, “Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” He didn’t say, “Where your heart is, there will your treasure be also.” We have to get the treasure right — the budget — and then our hearts will follow. We have deliberately invested in white communities and divested black and brown ones. We need a virtual Marshall Plan to build up those intentionally deprived communities.

Shifting significant funds from public safety — a whopping 61 percent of the city budget — to economic development in underserved neighborhoods is a start. “Defend police” and “defund police” are not mutually exclusive. Police themselves complain about mission drift. Law enforcement officers are asked to be mental health workers and social workers. If we have more of the latter, police can focus on their core role.
Movement toward policy changes in policing are taking place already, such as outlawing chokeholds and holding officers accountable for their fellow officers. More are needed. Until policing, prosecution, bail bonding and sentencing are colorblind, we have work to do. If we do it, we will know this time was different.
GEORGE MASON is pastor of Wilshire Baptist Church, president of Faith Commons and host of the “Good God” podcast. The Worship section is underwritten by Advocate Publishing and the neighborhood businesses and churches listed here. For information about helping support the Worship section, call 214.560.4202.
