COLLECT (AND SELL) THEM ALL

Even though Dallas Vintage Toys came to the Lake Highlands area somewhat recently, Shaun Neinast has been in the collectible business since he was 6 years old.

Story by AUSTIN WOOD | Photography by LAUREN ALLEN
“WATCHES,

COINS, STAMPS, GUITARS, YOU NAME IT.”

Shaun Neinast’s father was a devoted collector of many things, hence why Neinast has been collecting for what seems to be his whole life. He started tagging along to collector’s conventions and expos as a child.

He took on his father’s collect-it-all attitude, amassing comic books, baseball cards and toys.

Growing up in Lakewood, Neinast was already a budding entrepreneur. Instead of the run-of-the-mill lemonade stand, he opted to set up a baseball card trading stand on his street.

“My dad’s walking down the grass hill, and then he’s like, ‘Hey, what’s going on down here?’ I’m like, ‘Dad, trust me, I know what I’m doing,’” Neinast says. “The guy hands me 80 bucks in 20s. He’s like, ‘OK, he knows what he’s doing.’”

He says he was one of the top 10 eBay sellers in the state at 12 years old, and continued to collect, trade and sell toys as he got older.

Neinast went to college and earned dual degrees in marketing and business management. He spent a few months working in a corporate office downtown, but says by the time he was offered a parking spot, it was time to go.

“I’m like, ‘Oh, I’m gonna play with toys again,’” Neinast says.

Dallas Vintage Toys opened in 2007 in Lakewood selling collectible prototypes, comic books, retro video games and toys, of course. The business moved locations a few times before landing in a business park off Plano Road and Forest Lane. The new, 10,222-square-foot space has two showrooms, office space, repair areas and a large warehouse-ish storage area in the back Neinast likens to the warehouse from Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark. Sitting in his back office like the Great and Powerful Oz, Neinast is surrounded by encased sneakers, Gremlins prototypes straight from the studio and vintage comic books. His desk is littered with action figure legs, O-rings, torsos and heads that will soon be rebuilt to life as He-Man, Boba Fett and more.

After close to 20 years at Dallas Vintage Toys, he’s built a reputation for his expertise and inventory. People have visited from Australia, Mexico and Puerto Rico, occasionally asking for a picture with Neinast.

“It’s just cool, like meeting people from all over the world,” he says. “We’ve had celebrities. We’ve sold to the owner of the New York Yankees. We bought stuff from Leonardo DiCaprio.”

They may ask to take pictures with Neinast, but visitors come for Dallas Vintage Toys’ inventory.

The shop specializes in collectibles from the 1960s through the present. In the second showroom, which is guarded by a full-scale replica of Castle Grayskull from He-Man , rows of display cases boast Dallas Vintage Toys’ most valuable products. Graded by collectible brokers like Collectible Grading Authority, the merchandise comes encased in plastic display boxes with cards verifying authenticity and condition.

In the graded room, rare collector’s items like the 1983 Kenner Star Wars SEE-THREEPIO (C-3PO) prototype come with price tags stretching well into the thousands. The Holy Grail is perhaps the 1979 Kenner Prototype Action Figure Rocket-Firing Boba Fett, one of only seven authenticated figures.

“We sell stuff from a nickel to tens of thousands of dollars,” Neinast says. “We try not to advertise expensive stuff.”

More approachable prices can be found in the main showroom. Lined with action figures, replica vehicles, comic books, board games and other toys, the room is decorated with names from iconic franchises like Batman , The Avengers and Transformers , which he says are the most popular collections. The shop also features a large collection of vintage Barbie dolls.

Before COVID, Dallas Vintage Toys sourced much of its inventory from manufacturers and distributors. That’s changed, Neinast says.

“Our wholesale cost is like $23.80 plus shipping. It would be

cheaper for us to go buy it at a big box store,” he says. “So we’re kind of going back to our roots, where we buy almost 90 plus percent from the general public.”

Operating like something straight out of an episode of Pawn Stars, Neinast and the rest of the Dallas Vintage Toys staff use their wealth of expertise to judge the authenticity, condition and collectibility of merchandise coming through the door.

“A lot of people know me, I don’t rip anyone off,” he says. “I’ve had several stories where they came in wanting $150, and we ended up paying $9,500 because they might have more stuff, or they might have friends that have stuff.”

He admits his knowledge is more limited on newer items, which is where he relies on his staff.

Neinast says he looks for rarity when evaluating merchandise, especially in cases where parts are commonly missing in most surviving examples.

“The pieces I’m more interested in, it’s like this antenna is always missing, or this flashlight, or this part is always missing, and you have it,” he says. “So I mean, that makes me happy, because that can complete something and someone else will be happy because the same toy parts are always missing or always broken.”

Dallas Vintage Toys will celebrate its 20th anniversary in a few years. Collecting has come a long way since those days selling baseball cards, Neinast says.

“When I first started doing this, this was not cool, this was not mainstream,” he says. “Kids were like, trying to beat me up in elementary school or junior high but now it’s mainstream. Everyone’s doing it. Yeah, that’s super cool.”

Dallas Vintage Toys’ collection spans all price points, from high-end collector’s items to $10 action figures.

UNDER NEW OWNERSHIP

New Lake Highlands Cafe owner Sungmin Choi has plans for the diner — plans that don’ t include axing regulars’ favorites

by AUSTIN WOOD
Photography by KATHY TRAN
IF

YOU’RE A REGULAR AT LAKE HIGHLANDS CAFE, YOU PROBABLY ALREADY KNOW THAT THE LOCAL DINER IS UNDER NEW OWNERSHIP.

Regulars are a considerable part of the clientele at the eatery, which was opened by the Mustafi family in 2023. New owner Sungmin Choi knows how valuable these customers are and says they’ve already given him some suggestions.

“All the regulars, they actually know owners have been changing,” he says. “So they actually came up to me and said hi, and they’re giving me a little advice, like ‘don’t change much things.’”

Choi bought the business from the Mustafis in late October. He says as a new father, he wanted to build something of his own after years in the hospitality industry. He is a Le Cordon Bleu-trained chef and has worked in kitchens for close to two decades, including stops at Japanese eateries like Oishi Japanese in Lewisville and Edohana Sushi. He was the head chef for Jinbei Sushi in Lewisville, managed high-level corporate dining, and most recently served as a vice president at FnF Japanese Grill.

A native of Coppell, he says he has volunteered in the Vickery Meadow area before. His parents also own Southern Maid Donuts at Casa Linda Plaza, so he has some familiarity with the area.

“I love the community here in Lake Highlands,” Choi says.

Changes in ownership are typically met with skepticism at places like Lake Highlands Cafe, which is not at all related to the original Highlands Cafe at Walnut Hill-Audelia. One of the biggest fears that can come with new ownership is losing

favorites. Cafe regulars have nothing to worry about on that count, Choi says.

“I want to keep it that way,” Choi says. “But what customers used to like here, that’s why they’re returning, so I want to keep doing their favorites. I want to keep having great service. And if there’s gonna be changes, it’s going to be in better service.”

Choi says the country-fried steak with sausage gravy and the omelets have been his favorite items off of the menu.

The menu — just as extensive as Choi’s hospitality resume — comes with five crepe options, eight pancake varieties, nine different french toasts and eight omelet choices. Crepes and pancake offerings are highlighted by the cafe’s signature berry toppings, which include fresh berries, mascarpone, blackberry coulis and a special house white sauce.

French toast comes in all varieties of sugar-filled extravagance at the cafe. S’mores french toast comes served with marshmallow spread, graham crackers and chocolate, and the stuffed toast comes filled with cream cheese and topped with strawberries, chocolate chips, raspberries and chocolate sauce. All toasts are made on Empire Baking Co. challah bread.

Aside from sweeter breakfast options, the cafe offers hearty bowls and hashes made with house-made corned beef. Filling breakfast entrees like country fried chicken and biscuits and gravy offer a substantive start to the day alongside Tex-Mex favorites like migas. The crab cakes Benedict comes with premium lump crab, which Choi says is a credit to the Mustafis.

The cafe’s signature berry crepes come with mascarpone and blackberry coulis.

“They have good recipes, because I’m just checking it, but there’s not much to mention. …We’re using real crab meat instead of imitation,” he says. “So there’s not really much change, but I am wanting to maintain keeping up with products.”

Healthier options include yogurt, avocado toast and oatmeal.

“We’re serving an omelet, and hearty, healthy breakfast options,” Choi says. “We have lots of older people coming here, and I want them to think this is clean and safe and healthy food.”

For lunch, the cafe serves sandwiches, paninis, wraps, burgers and salads.

As opposed as he is to removing customer favorites, he’s thought about expanding the menu. Choi says that he would like to begin incorporating seasonal offerings and wants to look at bringing a convection oven into the kitchen for pies and cakes.

Choi is looking forward to becoming more involved in the community. He says he would like to host area first responders and organizations, and hopes to create a comfort place for his “family,” which includes his staff, customers and, of course, his own family.

“I want my staff to be here and happy, and I want myself to be happy through them, and I want my customers to be happy through us.”

Lake Highlands Cafe, 6751 Abrams Road, 214. 613. 6310, lakehighlandscafe.com

Choi says he wants to prioritize fresh, quality ingredients going forward.

A seasonal neighborhood tradition passed down through generations

12 DAYS OF TIMBERHOLLOW CIRCLE

DONNA JENKINS HAS LIVED ON TIMBERHOLLOW CIRCLE FOR 44 YEARS and has seen every rendition of the neighborhood’s 12 Days of Christmas tradition since its inception in the late 80s.

Each December, Timberhollow residents put up 14 painted wooden signs – 12 Days of Christmas plus welcome and goodbye signs – for the duration of the holiday season, often attracting hundreds of neighbors by the carload. Jenkins and her husband are some of the few neighbors left in the cul-de-sac that can recall the early years.

“I had no idea it would happen,” Jenkins says. “None of us did, but it comes and goes. In different years, it’ll be a little quieter.”

Early crowds arrived in limousines, party buses and even a hay wagon. These days, limos and buses have been supplanted by SUVs and, of course, golf carts. But people are still coming to see the 14 signs – some original and some reconstructed – that Jenkins and her husband first made in a neighbor’s garage in 1989.

Jenkins grew up in Arlington. She recalls visiting a similar display in Mayor Tom Vandergriff’s neighborhood as one of her fondest childhood memories.

After moving into the neighborhood in 1980, Jenkins and her neighbors

noticed people driving by to look at Christmas decorations. With memories of the Mayor’s display in mind, Jenkins and her neighbors decided to create a more involved display for their newfound fans. Using blown-up illustrations from children’s books, the neighborhood set out cutting and painting the signs.

“We thought, let’s do it, and if we don’t get it done this year, we’ll put it up next year,” Jenkins says. “Somehow we got it done in a week. And so then we got it put up and all of a sudden, the cars started coming.”

Three decades later, Jenkins’ seven swans have been replaced with a newer replica of the original – as most signs have by this point – but the cars still arrive from December 1 to early January.

Some people tour the neighborhood on foot as well, oftentimes getting a closer look at the signs, posing for pictures or grabbing candy canes from neighbors like Jenkins. Caroling is also prevalent, she says.

“I’ve heard every rendition of 12 Days of Christmas that you could possibly hear, good and bad,” Jenkins says.

The tradition has outlasted most of

the original homeowners. As older neighbors move away, the signs are passed down to new arrivals, who are seemingly always onboard, Jenkins says. She estimates that one sign has been passed down at least five times.

The tradition has become multigenerational for spectators as well. As with Jenkins and the Mayor’s display, there are now plenty of neighbors looking to recreate childhood memories to share with their own children.

“I had a doctor I went to and he was reading my chart, and he goes, ‘Oh, you live on the Timberhollow Street,” she says. “He said, ‘I grew up coming down that street,’ and so we were immediately friends. And I thought it was so neat. Now he has a little girl that he brings down.”

Jenkins says that she has no plans to move away from Timberhollow Circle anytime soon. She raised four kids in the house, and all four still live in Lake Highlands with families of their own, so she’s got little reason to move away. Besides, her grandchildren bring their friends over to enjoy the tradition she had no idea she was starting all the way back in 1989.

“It’s kind of our gift to [visitors], but they’re kind of a gift to us all, and everybody feels that way,” she says. “So that’s really neat.”
