PROFILE

THESE ARE THE PEOPLE IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD

PASSION FOR DOG FASHION

Aften Bell runs The Love Pit Rescue, creates functional dog accessories 

Aften Bell has so much passion that she was back to work a few days after a major surgery. “I was only five days into recovery after an open myomectomy where I had 14 fibroids removed,” Bell says. “I could barely walk, yet I was in my home office making videos for our kick-starter launch.” Bell worked in a debilitated state for the launch of her dog accessory line, Bubble & Spike. Its fashionable and functional harnesses are inspired by Bell’s work running The Love Pit Rescue, a foster-based rescue for pit bulls.

Starting The Love Pit:

I started fostering for DFW Rescue Me. I got really into fostering the pit bulls. I was attracted to the underdog, the dog that nobody else wanted to foster. A couple of years later, I crossed paths with a pit bull in Oak Cliff. I was on my way to Kessler Park, and there was a dog in the middle of the street with a giant hole on the side of her face. She was walking into oncoming traffic while cars were swerving, so I got out and helped her. Within 24 hours, my Instagram post about her traveled the world, and I raised a bunch of money. I was floored by the fact that people were giving me money and trusted me to take care of the dog. That inspired me to help more dogs like Sweet Pea and to work with people that also believed in the same mission.

How’s running the rescue?

It’s been going great. We’re in our fifth year, and we have well over 250 volunteers. We’ve rescued close to over 1,000 dogs. We have a new headquarters in the Design District, so we’re able to have a facility where we can house dogs before they go into their foster homes.

Operating during a pandemic: Our adoptions have been up. Our fosters have been up. Our intake has been down slightly because we have just been very careful with expenses. People’s money and donations are going to other organizations

that need it, like health care. However, we still need it. Her dog accessory brand Bubble & Spike:

I worked for a company under Fossil called Skagen, and they discontinued most of the brand. I had the opportunity to stay, and I chose to leave. I took my severance and put that in savings to start building toward my dream of creating my own product line. I knew I didn’t want to go back to corporate America. I thought I might as well take my design skills and try to make these tools better. It was really important to me that whatever I did had a positive impact. I didn’t want to just create another accessory. There’s too much of that out there already.

Bubble & Spike’s mission:

When we go buy products for our dogs, we want them to look cute, pretty or cool. But unfortunately, a lot of the accessory products for dogs don’t work the way that they should. The training product is either too outdoorsy and too campy. Then you have the fashion stuff that doesn’t help you control your dog or train. The goal of Bubble & Spike is to mesh the two so that people get excited about training their dogs. We want our product to be fashionable with purpose and function behind it.

Her own pets:

I own five pit bulls, and then I have one foster. So at any given time, I have about six dogs. The lazy crew is Sweet Pea and Dozer. The crazy crew is Buddy, Alley and Buster. Right now, my foster is Bud. He’s an 85-pound American bulldog.

Misconceptions about pit bulls:

They’re actually really great family dogs because they’re attentive to people. They’re loyal to their human, which means they’re easy to train. They’re food motivated, they’re toy motivated and they’re very athletic. Unfortunately, you have people out there that think they’re dangerous and aggressive. That’s what made me so passionate about pit bulls. At one point, I was scared of pit bulls too. When I got to know one, I was like, “What on earth? What have I been thinking all this time? This dog is a big goofball.”

WHEN CHERYL AND PETER KENNY told regulars they were moving to Lake Highlands, they did not take it well. They said it was too far, and they wouldn’t come.

But after venturing to the new location, customers realized that Lochland’s Food & Spirits possessed the same vibe and quality as The Dubliner and Capitol Pub.

“At both of our other businesses, we’ve always had a lot of regulars,” Cheryl says. “You want to feel comfortable and special when you’re there, and that’s carried over.”

nuts and a balsamic reduction. The kids’ menu offers fish and chips, grilled cheese and chicken tenders.

Lochland’s cocktail menu is full of classics made with fresh herbs, fruit and syrup, and the pub has 12 taps.

DID YOU KNOW?

“We don’t like to overdo it,” Peter says. “We rotate a lot of local beers, whether it’s Tupp’s, Oak Highlands or Peticolas. When I say ‘local,’ I don’t mean Texas, just Dallas local.”

Peter is from Ireland, and he met Cheryl on a trip to Austin. They owned Capitol Pub for 13 years.

The Dubliner, temporarily closed because of the coronavirus, is the oldest Irish bar in Dallas, and loyalists gather at Lochland’s because of Peter and Cheryl.

“Even though each place has been unique, we still have the care in the quality of what we do,” Cheryl says. “Whether it’s the beer, cocktails or the food menu.”

From French fries to pizza crust, the entire menu is made from scratch. They use local ingredients like sausage from Jimmy’s Italian Market for the salciccia flatbread.

The shepherd’s pie is minced beef, vegetables and gravy, topped with garlic mashed potatoes. The Goat Man is a flatbread pizza with roasted grapes, goat cheese, prosciutto, arugula, pine

After coronavirus hit, the Kennys made cuts for the business’ survival and led their staff with courage.

“We just try to tell them, ‘Look, we’re fighters. We’re not going anywhere,’” Cheryl says. “We’re trying to do it smartly, so we can stay here for the long haul.”

They’ve hosted drive-in movie nights with car-side service and transformed the courtyard into a socially distanced space.

“We’ve had so much feedback from the neighborhood dying to get out but not feeling comfortable with it,” Peter says. “This is a way for most people to have some sort of an option.”

ANIMAL STORIES: A DOG SAVED BY COVID-19, A RUNAWAY

REPTILE AND A PIG WHO LOVES TO ESCAPE

Photography by DANNY FULGENCIO

THE COVID-19 DOG SAVED FROM EUTHANIZATION

n a beach in Galveston, a dog plays in the waves as her owners watch from the sand. She leaps through the shallow water, and her owners notice that her fur is growing back, and her eyes are clear from gunk. The transformation is amazing.

“Nobody would have pulled her out of the shelter in the condition that she was in,” owner Kim Armstrong says.

Pippy caught the family’s eye on the Dallas Animal Services website.

“She had a real cute face, and they just had a face shot of her,” Armstrong says.

Much like a Tinder date gone wrong, Pippy did not look like her photo from the website when they went to get her from curbside pickup. In fact, she had been scheduled for euthanasia.

“When they brought this dog into my car, she was covered from head to toe in mange,” Armstrong says. “She had no hair anywhere on her body except for her head. She smelled so bad.”

Armstrong received sponsorship from Dallas Pets Alive because animal services would only release a dog with such serious health issues to a foster rescue group.

The family had to wait until the following Monday to take her to the vet to get her checked out. Armstrong was just hoping the pup would make it to the appointment because her condition was worse than she had imagined.

Pippy takes medicine for her mange and heart condition. The pup also regained her hearing after receiving treatment for an inner ear infection.

Pippy won them over a few days before they started receiving inquiries for her adoption.

“One night she decided she was going to sleep with us, and it sealed the deal for my husband,” Armstrong says. “She was the perfect leg occupant because she laid in one little spot with her head on the pillow.”

The family believes that was Pippy’s way of saying, “Don’t make me move again. I’m your dog.”

BIKUTO RUNAWAY REPTILE: THE MOST ADVENTUROUS LIZARD IN TOWN

On a sunny afternoon in Lake Highlands, Bikuto transformed into his “sport mode” as owner Annie Corley calls it, and ran away from the bush he was exploring while no one was looking. The rebellious reptile went MIA. His owners thought he was gone for good.

That was until a peculiar notification popped up on Corley’s phone. “We saw a post on Nextdoor that someone had found a bearded dragon in their front yard, over half a mile from our house,” Corley says. “We went to pick him up, and he hissed at me when I put him in my lap.”

After Bikuto’s day-long hiatus, Corley noticed he returned with some painful injuries. “He had a beakshaped bruise on his nose, part of his tail was injured and he was missing some scales,” Corley says, coming to the conclusion that he must have survived a predator attack.

But this escapade is just one of many for bold Bikuto. In fact, adventure is in his very name. Corley

named him after a settlement she worked on in Uganda last summer. She found him on Craigslist in Chattanooga, Tennessee, not far from where she attended college at Sewanee: University of the South. “He belonged to a young boy who became bored with him,” Corley says. “But his original name was Stormy. I immediately changed it.”

While living as an honorary college student with Corley, Bikuto adjusted to dorm life just fine. He rode around on Corley’s shoulder as she roamed around campus, walked alongside her in the shady Sewanee trails and loved to relax by the creeks. Bikuto even has an Instagram account, @fratstarbikuto, for his college groupies to follow.

Now that Corley has moved back to Lake Highlands, Bikuto enjoys his daily dose of blueberries and a wide selection of worms.

“He also loves cilantro,” Corley says as Bikuto throws himself off of her lap and sprints through the grass. “There’s his sport mode again.”

PIGGY THE ESCAPIST

eighbors strolling through Town Creek may do a double take when they see a pig being walked on a leash. That’s Piggy, Claire and Paul Reyes’ appropriately named pet.

“She likes to stop a lot to dig and smell things,” Claire says. “It's pretty frustrating.”

The Reyes family received Piggy as a gift from Santa Claus for their 10-year-old daughter, Lily.

“The fall before Santa brought her a pig, she had a pretty catastrophic knee injury,” Claire says. “Lily was in a leg brace for nine months as a 10-year-old, which is not fun.”

Lily was benched during club soccer, and Piggy was her reward for being gracious and positive through it all. She wanted a pig because they’re hypoallergenic, and she’s allergic to certain animals.

Now, Piggy spends her days eating treats.

“She's always very hungry,” Lily says. “She really likes oats, carrots and bananas. She just eats the whole banana, peel and all.”

Piggy is also an escape artist. They keep her in a chicken coop, built by the previous homeowners, but she always manages to break loose.

One day, they witnessed Piggy taking the chicken coop wire down and squeezing herself through the open slat in the fence.

“She's very smart,” Lily says.

Besides breaking out, Piggy alternates between digging in the dirt and sleeping in the sun.

“We get people saying, ‘We love looking at your pig,’ because you can see her through the flaps in the front,” Claire says. “She'll sit there and wag her

Fully grown now, Piggy is 35 pounds. She was only 3 months old and 5 pounds when she first arrived.

She’s maintained her friendly nature. She doesn’t bite, and she lets people rub her belly. Piggy can be shy, but she loves sitting next to a fire in winter.

CATTITUDE

A declawing pioneer, Dr. Welden is the ultimate cat lady

Dr. Raina Welden found it difficult to find a job as a veterinarian because she refused to declaw cats, so she bought her own practice.

“I have been a crazy cat lady my whole life, so I always wanted to work just with cats,” she says.

One of Welden’s veterinary school instructors once complained during equine rotation that Welden paid more attention to the barn cats than the horses.

Weldon worked at a cat-and-dog practice in Arizona after graduating from Louisiana State University in 1977 but searched for a cats-only clinic.

“It was actually rather challenging to get a job in a cat clinic as a nodeclawing veterinarian,” she says. “I had several clinics tell me they would not hire me if I wouldn’t declaw.”

Declawing involves amputating the last bone on every toe of the animal.

“The first time I saw it done as a vet tech, the cat had very good pain medication,” Welden says. “Yet the cat woke up, screaming and biting at its bandaged paws. That’s the part that people don’t get to see.”

Throughout the years, she has seen the negative effects of declawing. She’s witnessed limping, abscess and skin loss from bandages and tourniquets. Some cats refuse to use a litter box because litter hurts their mangled paws.

Welden applied to the Cat Hospital in Lake Highlands, a cat-only clinic established in 1988 by Dr. Kathleen Eastman. Eastman was moving to Nebraska, so she asked Welden if she wanted to buy her practice.

Welden took over in 2001. She bought the practice before she bought a house. Welden grabbed a map and drew a 5-mile radius to figure out where she wanted to live.

“I’m not going to commute, and I don’t want to get on the interstate,” she remembers saying.

For the past 19 years, Welden has grown close relationships with her patients. She’s able to empathize with pet owners because she’s been a “cat mom” her entire life.

“I joke that I think I’ve had a cat with every medical condition out there, but it’s true,” she says. “They give me a lot of personal experience.”

Welden doesn’t know how many cats she’s adopted in her lifetime, but she’s owned up to six at one time. Her cats’ illnesses have ranged from kidney disease, cancer, diabetes, glaucoma and asthma.

“I understand what it’s like to be on the other side of the table.”

DAIRY AND PRAIRIE

The Buhrer family owned a dairy farm where White Rock Lake sits now

Jacob and Anna Hinterman Buhrer met in Switzerland. Not long after, they moved to Ellenboro, West Virginia, and decided to move to Dallas in the summer of 1879.

They had four children: Arnold, Berth, Julie and Anna.

The family lived in the area that is now Junius and Gaston. Jacob acquired land and 12 milk cows. He quickly realized that the area was not viable for his cattle to graze, so he moved the family to the White Rock Creek area.

They found a meadow with water and good drainage and constructed a house and barn. Jacob purchased 350 acres. In 1890, a white, two-story home sat atop a hill on their property.

They had four more children there. Their names were Herman, Martha, Maria and Walter.

Now that the family had space, Jacob’s herd grew to 40 or 50 milk cows. He also owned horses and mules. Jacob brought milk to town twice a day

and called his business the Swiss Dairy. Both sides of the farm’s wagon displayed a painted scene of Holstein cows, a lake and trees.

“In the distance, it showed an elevated place, which I suppose reminded him of the alps in Switzerland where he had grown up,” Anna Buhrer Fritz said in a 1972 interview with the Lakewood Oral History Project.

He rang a bell and customers came to grab the milk.

People left buckets or bottles with tickets that determined how much milk they wanted. Sometimes, the lid didn’t close correctly or the tickets got lost in the wind, and customers left cash in the bottles for Jacob.

After returning to the farm, they milked the cows, put the milk in large cans with lids and then placed the cans in a trough with cool water. Once they were placed in the wagon, they tied wet sacks around the cans. One can contained sweet milk and the other sour or buttermilk.

In the summer, there was always a shortage of water, so Jacob built a well.

“He struck a stream that never went dry,” Fritz said. “We always had plenty of water then.”

The family often picnicked on tables built on the pasture near the deeper part of White Rock Creek.

At the edge of the farm, African-Americans owned 2 or 3 acres, where they built a white church with a steeple and a three-room cottage. Fritz and her siblings affectionately called the married couple who owned the church Aunt Liza and Uncle Paige.

“We loved to go and visit her,” Fritz said. “She would always have something interesting to tell. We brought them extra produce and milk.”

Fritz and her siblings wanted to attend the church after hearing the singing and organ playing from their home.

“If you’re quiet and don’t disturb them, I’ll allow you to go occasionally,” Fritz recalled her mother saying.

Uncle Paige put a bench across the back for her and her

siblings. They watched church members sing and let the spirit take over, something they had never experienced before.

In Dallas, there was a Swiss colony, and the family attended St. Paul’s Evangelical and Reformed Church to hear a sermon in German.

“When automobiles came, we didn’t like them and neither did the horses,” Fritz said. “They had these little red cars with the horn on the side, and I suppose they thought it was great sport to make that racket with that horn. Our poor horse would quiver, and we would have to get out and hold him until the automobile went by.”

The Buhrer children walked about 2 miles to attend Floyd School, a one-room building near what is now the Lakewood Theater. It had four windows and outside shutters. In the middle of the room, there was a box stove to keep the school warm.

“They had a blackboard, which was always fascinating to me,” Fritz said. “I would see those older children work an arithmetic problem, all those figures and algebra. I thought those X’s and Y’s must have been interesting.”

In school, they had recess in the morning and an hourlong recess in the afternoon. The students brought lunches in buckets, sacks and baskets. They played “wolf over the river,” which was their version of “red rover.”

In 1904, the matriarch, Anna, died, and the children moved back to Dallas to attend school. As Dallas grew, citizens voted to build a lake on White Rock Creek with a dam at the edge of the Buhrer Swiss Dairy Farm. The farm, including the house and barns, was condemned, and the land was designated for the filtration plant.

Fritz’s brother, Herman, took a few of the cattle to South Dallas and later had his own dairy, which was eventually bought by Borden’s Dairy.

WORSHIP

A reckoning of flawed humans

Can any historical figure stand the scrutiny of our times?

Scripture says, “There is no one who is righteous, not even one.” There are no saints who aren’t also sinners.

This presents us with a spiritual problem in dealing with statues, names on schools and streets in public places. Our city is rife with them, and now they are contested. How should we decide whom to honor, which to preserve, what to remove and how to replace?

Confederate monuments in Dallas are gone. Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee elementary school names have changed. Some say this reflects a “cancel culture” that disregards heritage. But their purpose to begin with was to rewrite history, disregarding the outcome of the Civil War and maintaining white supremacy.

Now Woodrow Wilson High School and R.L. Thornton Freeway are in the queue for review. Wilson was president of the United States, Thornton mayor of Dallas. They did good things for our country and city.

Yet Wilson re-segregated federal agencies and defended the separation of races. He hosted at the White House a viewing of the racist film, “Birth of a Nation,” which spurred the rebirth of the Ku Klux Klan.

Speaking of the Klan, Mayor Thornton was a prominent member of the white-hooded group that terrorized Black residents of Dallas. As a banker, he presided over the period of redlining Black neighborhoods. As president of the State Fair of Texas, he limited access to Blacks.

Wilson and Thornton were men of their times. The air they breathed stank of racism. Prevailing mores limited their vision, but they ended up reflecting them more than changing them. They have been honored for decades for the good they did. That there is a reckoning now for being flawed human beings, like the rest of us, is just. This doesn’t take away from their legacy so much as clarify it.

We are at last confronting the lingering

legacy of racism. Can any historical figure, then, stand the scrutiny of our times?

Thomas Jefferson penned the words, “All men are created equal” but retained slaves and fathered children with one of them. Abraham Lincoln penned the Emancipation Proclamation but said at one point he would just as soon preserve the Union with slavery than lose it through abolition.

These men were not perfect, but they pointed us toward a “more perfect union.” They showed moral courage to stand up for principles that time has proven right, even though their ideals were unpopular in their time.

The Russian dissident Alexander Solzhenitsyn said that the line between good and evil passes right through every human heart. We should honor those who struggled within themselves to win the battle that made us all better. We should elevate and emulate those whose memory calls us to “the better angels of our nature,” as Lincoln put it.

All our faiths teach us to love God and our neighbor as ourselves. Our public squares, therefore, should inspire us to be, as our Pledge of Allegiance declares: “one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”
