OpeningRemarks

A chAnce encounter Digital news can’t compete with the surprises newsprint offers It’s cold and wet and windy outside, and brownish-red leaves whip through the yard. Can I complete the dash without becoming soaked as rain pounds our driveway, bouncing up on the porch? It’s probably only 60 feet, the distance from our front door to the sidewalk, but this early in the morning, with the darkened sky strangling the light, there might as well be a mile between me and the three rolled-up newspapers on the lawn. I’m waiting, knowing full well that everything in the Dallas Morning News, the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times can be found online, but I still like to feel paper between my fingers as I sift through yesterday’s news looking for things that still have meaning today. Today, I’m virtually a loner on this trip — the neighbors’ lawns are mostly empty. In fact, given our headlong flight to electronic information, I’m almost embarrassed to be seen with newsprint. Years ago, if something big happened, we might have been teased with information on television or radio, but we would have waited for the newspaper to make sense of it all. We may have had opinions, but we couldn’t do much with them — sure, we might have wanted to remind Donald Trump he’s an idiot or tell Lindsay Lohan to quit screwing up her life, but by the time we hand-wrote our thoughts and found a postage stamp, the energy driving the hate was pretty much gone. We don’t have that problem anymore, because in seconds I can join the many thousands on Lohan’s Twitter account or Trump’s Facebook page letting them know exactly how disgusted we are with their antics. No matter if tomorrow I’m not so hot under the collar and maybe even wish I’d

held my digital tongue; there will be something else fueling my anger by then. Social networks and the internet are doing a lot of great things in our neighborhoods these days, as you’ll learn from our cover story this month. Neighbors are finding each other, cops are tracking criminals, pets are being found, stores are selling stuff; while waiting for our monthly magazine, you can even find daily news updates for our neighborhood at advocatemag.com or on our Facebook page or Twitter feed. The internet makes all things accessible instantaneously, so there’s no wait to have questions answered or information found, as long as you know exactly what you’re looking to find. But for me, a newspaper on newsprint still offers something more — the opportunity to stumble across something I didn’t know I needed to know. Like the story I read the other day about the death by brain

damage of a 28-year-old Minnesota hockey player, or the story about why Army wound up beating Navy for the 1944 college football championship. These stories are on tablets or smartphones, too, but they’re harder to find because we have no reason to look for them. I could survive without that random knowledge. But the information itself, stumbled across as I randomly flipped newspaper pages, offers something to ponder, to the extent pondering something is possible anymore. Anyway, the rain finally has slowed to a drizzle, so I’m going to scurry down the steps, across the lawn and out to the street where the newspapers lay coiled in plastic. I’ll enjoy them as long as I can, because like all of us, their time will end. Sooner, it appears, rather than later.

There was a time when Advocate Magazine was just Advocate magazine, but over the last few years, we’ve evolved into Advocate Media, comprising blogs, podcasts, videos, Facebook, Foursquare, Twitter and email newsletters. Some of the aforementioned items concerned us, and in fact, Advocate editors had trouble becoming accustomed to using social media in our daily routine. Below are excerpts from a 2009 podcast featuring our first web director, Kris Scott — the voices belong to her, editors Christina Hughes Babb, Rachel Stone and Marlena Chavira-Medford, and photo editor Can “Turk” Turkyilmaz. We admit: The audio on this thing is truly awful. And we introduced the podcast with a song. It’s supposed to be funny, but we have a weird sense of humor. We had fun with the podcasts in those days, because we were pretty sure that that none of you listened.

Listen to the entire show. CHB: Today’s topic is Advocate in the age of social media … I guess. I actually just made that up … Kris Scott has been leading the Advocate’s social media effort, so I’ll start by asking her, “Why are you making us do this?” KS: I read recently that people are spending half their time on Facebook and, less so, Twitter than on destination websites, such as Advocatemag.com. So those who were once going to our website might be spending that time on Facebook now. I kind of think of Facebook as the Yellow Pages of yesteryear, in that, if you want to learn something about a business, you go almost

immediately to Facebook, so we needed to have a presence there for that reason alone.

We Purchase & Sell Fine Jewelry Swiss Watches Rare Coins

CT: And it’s free. CHB: And pretty easy to use.

We Pay Top Prices & We Pay in Cash

KS: We used to be a monthly magazine and people read it and then put it down. This way, we can be in your face all the time. MCM: And people can now see our faces, on Twitter, rather than just our names and our bylines.

AT

KS: And your pictures are all pretty cute. CHB: Thank Turk for that … and we get to see our readers’ faces and get to know you. KS: It is an amazing dialogue. And it helps you guys do your jobs, too, because, say you are covering neighborhood seafood places, you can get on Facebook or Twitter and get feedback from neighbors about their favorite places. … and we are going to be giving out free things so follow us … friend us?

MCM: We learned about Bliss restaurant’s new location on Twitter, and we announced that In–N-Out Burger is coming to Dallas on Facebook. KS: And you can use it for fun stuff, like those photos we posted of the best-dressed fire hydrant. PODCAST

Q&A: Cameron Nelson When he was a student at Lake Highlands High School, Cameron Bruce Nelson was, by his own admission, a “total delinquent”. He had a rebellious streak that gave rise to class ditching and rule breaking, and drove his distressed parents to send him off to boarding school his senior year. But Cameron, like many a great troublemaker before him, was just an imaginative soul itching to find its place in the universe. Mere months after being temporarily ousted from home and school, he improved his academic standing enough to successfully finish high school and enter university of Texas at austin where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa. Since, he has traveled the world, immersed himself in myriad cultures and honed his music skills, and has written, shot, edited and produced a handful of movies. These days he just premiered a documentary and is working on his first feature-length film.

Any interest in film or theater in high school? I wasn’t really into much in high school or what it had to offer. I had a hard time, but I guess I was just trying to find my place. I didn’t go about it the best way, but by the time I got to college, I felt more in control; I settled in and allowed myself to learn. I realized that the world was so big and that there is so much out there.

When did your interest turn to moviemaking? When I graduated from college, where I had double-majored in cultural anthropology and history, my dad gave me a camera. I brought it along on a trip to South Africa, which is where I fell in love with film. I had always been into music and visual arts — I guess when I discovered film, I saw it as a marriage of the two … I scored the films myself.

So, you saw the score as an elemental part of your films? Not necessarily. It’s more like seeing the film, the score and the images, as a symphony itself.

When you returned to the United States, you didn’t go right into filmmaking, either. Instead you did something rather unconventional. Yes. A friend and I decided to become migrant workers for a while. We wanted to make and save a lot of money, and have an experience, so we worked on a farm in southwest Virginia. We formed an art collective and tried some different things — live music, making music videos, touring with a band — but the idea of film was still speaking to me.

What brought you back to DFW? I really came back here for a girl, Jessica Fuentes, who would become my wife and part of the core membership of our film production company, Rambos Rainbos.

Tell us about some of the things you have done so far. Short films “In Kind” and “New Animal” premiered this year at festivals. We have done a documentary about a grass-fed cattle ranch in Greenville, Texas, and how farmers manage during a terrible drought.

I am two-thirds of the way into our first feature length film about the farm that I lived on in Virginia — a lot of my work is autobiographical in some ways.

“In Kind” is about Robert Drake, a 50-something man who obsessively rides his bicycle. You’re barely 30, so how do you relate to him? I find a lot of connections with Robert Drake, whether it’s through people I know or my own experiences as a stepfather. I won’t spoil it, but at the end of “In Kind,” you suddenly see him in a completely different way. That is a huge part of what I do — playing with people’s perceptions. Making the audience understand that things usually are not as they seem at first look.

WHAT CAN A COOKIE

DO

Are you involved in every aspect of your movies? I write, direct and produce. My wife is extremely artistic and designs sets and costumes, directs photography, and the third member of our core team is Mark Howell. I’ve had help from Frank Mosley, a filmmaker from Arlington has helped me with getting local actors. Waxahachie’s Jodie Moore plays the lead in “In Kind” and [Lake Highlands High School grad] Wilbur Penn plays a guy who interviews him for a job.

Somewhere I read that your films are often almost “uncomfortably intimate” — why and how do you evoke that? I like to make the viewer feel what the character is feeling — like in “New Animal,” we are on the side of the highway in a car with an arguing couple. The camera is in the car, and the audience feels cramped and smothered, like the character feels. I like to focus on evoking a feeling rather than spelling everything out in the script, which is why I like a lot of European directors such as Antonioni. When directing, I like to have long talks with the actors and let them get to know and develop the character themselves. I plant the seeds and let the character grow in them — you have to have a lot of faith in your actors to do that.

all that jazz Lyndsey Jones “I want to make it big,” says Lyndsey Jones with a laugh. The question, “What are your hopes for the future?” was admittedly a silly one. The 21-year-old Lake Highlands High School grad has remained, since early childhood, unfalteringly on-track in her quest. She’s been playing the piano competitively since age 5 and, as an adolescent, started voice training. She sang in the high school pop choir, and kept practicing and studying music throughout her college years. These days, local nightspots love her Stevie Nicks-meets-Norah Jones presence so much that she has ongoing gigs at both Terilli’s on Greenville and The Library at the Warwick Melrose Hotel (as well as one at a venue in Plano). “I’m booked about 5-6 nights a week right now,” she says. She spends her daylight hours working at Z Gallerie, a hip north Dallas furniture store, and says that she loves interior design and concedes that design could be part of her future plans, however, she stresses, music (for now) is now her life. Her current album, “What a Day,” consists of jazzy covers from Alicia Keys, Van Morrison and Sara Bareilles, plus an original — the title track. She’s working on a second album that will showcase her songwriting talents. Her mom and dad, Jeffery and Crysta Jones, live in Lake Highlands with Jones’s siblings Adam, Rachel and Nick, who is in the Espree pop choir at LHHS. —Christina Hughes Babb CATCH JONES MONDAYS AND THURSDAYS AT TERILLI’S OR TUESDAYS AT THE LIBRARY BAR. Baylor helped me rediscover a good night’s rest.

Ray Lichtenwalter found it difficult to make it through the day without a nap. He didn’t realize he had a problem, but his wife knew he stopped breathing during the night. “My whole day was affected because I was so tired,” he says. At Baylor Sleep Center at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas, Ray was diagnosed with sleep apnea and fitted with a CPAP machine. “It was like a miracle. I got up the next morning and felt better than I had in years.” Now that he gets a good night’s sleep every night, Ray’s entire outlook on life has changed. “I’m looking forward to golf, traveling and doing all the things grandparents are supposed to do. And now I have the energy to do it.”

enk’s is known for its black forest cakes and German sausages, but the cozy European-style café also is a prime spot for hearty, homemade soups during the winter. “It’s the old Dutch, Swiss and German recipes that have been around forever,” says coowner Adrian Winnubst, whose family came over from Holland and bought the restaurant 21 years ago. Soups of the day include potato on Fridays, loaded with carrots, onions, celery and premium red potatoes. There’s split pea on Thursdays, which comes with pieces of bacon hiding under the surface for a nice pork flavor. For all the soups, Winnubst says chefs use beef stock from leftover pork loin bones in the deli. They make five gallons of soup a day and typically sell out by closing time. —Emily Toman

The world of cheap wine is in flux as we celebrate the Advocate’s 10th annual Cheap Wine extravaganza and $10 Wine Hall of Fame. Cheap wine is more popular than ever, but the wine industry — and especially the wine writing part of it — seems to resent cheap wine more than ever. Their reasons aren’t quite clear, but chalk up much of the backlash to the fact they’re tired of cheap wine, and want to get back to making and writing about the expensive stuff. We can be a bit snobbish, no? Nevertheless, the 2012 Hall of Fame added seven wines, and dropped only four: Anne urgau and the Vinum Cellars chenin blanc , which are scarce around here, and the Toad oir Rose. It’s especially sad to drop the Toad has been a fixture since the Hall started. Ask the wine guy How popular is wine in the United States? Depends on whom you ask. We drink more wine than anyone else in the world, but our per capita consumption is very ordinary. Wine and beer have been trading off as the most popular alcoholic beverage in the country, but very few of us drink that much wine: Just 20 percent of the U.S. adult population accounts for 91 percent of all wine consumed. —Jeff Siegel

iNeighborhoods At 7:30 a.m. on a Sunday in the Woodbridge neighborhood, a young man in a gray hooded sweatshirt is checking every car door on the block. He even approaches a car parked in a circular driveway, just feet away from the homeowner’s kitchen window. Right after said homeowner calls 911 and yells at the kid to “scram,” he alerts his neighbors via the Woodbridge Homeowners Association Facebook group, accessible only to Woodbridge residents. Of the approximately 230 families in the neighborhood, about 121 have joined the online group. I think we do a really good job with it and enjoy a lot of participation.” But what of the pitfalls? “Actually, drawbacks are few and far between,” Murray says. “Sometimes, in their comments, people overreact.” There have been instances when Morgan and the other administrators have had to censor comments that could be offensive to other members. “We usually wait it out awhile … often we just let an argument play out … because we want to respect people’s freedom to speak,” he says. Online outbursts are really no different than what one might hear at an actual neighborhood or business meeting, he says. Still, it’s a private Facebook group whose comments need to be monitored for appropriateness. “I would always recommend that neighborhoods using social media have someone in charge monitor the comments,” he says. Some experts argue that social media prevents people from getting to know one another personally. “The hours per day of face-to-face socializing have declined as the use of social media has increased,” writes Aric Sigman in his 2009 book, “Well Connected? The Biological Implications of Social Networking.” “People who use these sites frequently are prone to social isolation.” Morgan disagrees. “That’s not the least bit true,” he says. “Our neighborhood meetings used to be 25-30 people, now it is 75-100, and I think that has everything to do with Facebook. Before, people might not come to a meeting because they felt like a stranger; now they come to look for the faces they know.” In Woodbridge, Morgan’s home is also known as the “community center,” he jokes, noting there is no shortage of face time with his neighbors. “But where I really get to know people, and get a feel for who they are, is Facebook.”

iCrime Fighting facebook.com/DallasPD

A heavyset, bearded man recently went on a robbery spree in north and northeast Dallas neighborhoods. A security camera captured the guy holding up a Greenville Avenue Game Stop clerk. A few hours later, the Dallas Police Department had shared the video with its 400 YouTube subscribers, 8,000 or so Facebook fans and 7,000 Twitter followers. The police also posted the suspect’s image and other useful information about the search on Nixle, a nationwide network that alerts residents to public safety threats via text, Twitter or email (anyone can register free for Nixle alerts by zip code). “I saw this guy at the train station,” wrote one Facebook user. “He sure is ugly,” wrote another. Though it gives them a certain amount of junk to sort through, and the Game Stop robber at the time of publication had not been caught, police say enhanced communication can only help an investigation and encourage more people to help. “It’s a way of getting involved without getting too involved,” Sgt. Israel Herrera says about both social media tools and the relatively new crimefighting tool iWatch. The smart phone application allows users to give anonymous tips to police. Northeast Deputy Chief Gloria Perez recently told a neighborhood group that police follow up on all iWatch tips, and the Dallas Police Department reports that since its launch last January, it has received about 1,135 iWatch tips, many leading to arrests.

FOURSQUARE Foursquare (n) A location-based mobile check-in service. The mobile app uses the GPS on your phone to help you check in at coffee shops, restaurants, bars, libraries, parks, events and other locations. Your Foursquare friends can view the places you’re hanging out, and some businesses offer specials to customers who show on their phone that they’ve checked in on Foursquare. You also can earn points and virtual badges for different check-in adventures.

iBusiness Months before it opened doors to diners, Goodfriend Beer Garden and Burger House near White Rock Lake had hundreds of Facebook fans. As Goodfriend Facebook page administrators posted construction pics, updates and even organized a summertime parking lot keg party, excitement grew. The restaurant enjoyed a packed house opening night and has been going strong ever since. Social media can work well for restaurants, says Lake Highlands resident Marshall Hays, who owns Lucky Duck Car Wash/Oil and Lube on Audelia and runs a marketing consultant business. “When you’re dealing with restaurants and food, people have a lot of questions,” Hays says. “What do other people think about this place? How’s the food? What is the atmosphere? What should I wear?” Those questions draw people to the restaurant’s Facebook page, he says, where they can find the answers. It’s not so easy for a car wash, Hays says, though he is doing his best to use Twitter, Facebook and Foursquare to promote his business and offer discounts. “I’d like to be able to do one and be done,” Hays says of the multiple social media venues, “but you have to stay with the cool kids, got to keep up.” But getting others on board has been a struggle, he says. “For example, someone is waiting for an oil change, and I’ll see they have

GLOSSARY Check in (v), check-in (n) The act of telling a location-based mobile service like Foursquare, Yelp or Facebook where you are, usually with that service’s smartphone app. Check-ins let your friends and followers see where you are and where you like to hang out. Used in a sentence: “Hang on, I’m going to check in on Facebook before we order drinks.“ “Hey, cool; I earned the Great Outdoors badge with that last Foursquare check-in at the park.”

“For example, someone is waiting for an oil change, and I’ll see they have an iPhone in hand, and I’ll say, ‘Hey, if you check in at Lucky Duck on Facebook or Foursquare, I’ll give you 10 percent off right now.’ “

His friends even tease him for the amount of time he spends checking in, updating and tweeting. “Some of my Facebook friends have even un-friended me,” he says. “I was socially pressured into not checking in on Facebook anymore.” That won’t stop him from using social media as both a consumer and a business owner. “I plan to offer freebies on Facebook and Twitter, and goodies for Foursquare mayors. Lake Highlands residents Jose Ramirez and wife Josefina Orozco have breathed new life into Northlake Shopping Center’s Divine Coffee Shop, giving it a thorough renovation and renaming it JJ’s Cafe. Though the couple purchased Divine in April 2010, they have just now finally seen their vision for the breakfast spot realized. They gave JJ’s Café an updated menu featuring crepes, cheese blintzes, scrambles and more. “We now also have a variety of flavored pancakes,” Ramirez says. The neighborhood breakfast spot is open from 7 a.m.-2 p.m., seven days a week.

Construction begins at Walnut Hill and Audelia Razing of the long-vacated building at Walnut Hill and Audelia officially has begun, and new homes could be built by spring 2012. Trucks have started tearing down the former Walmart in preparation for the White Rock Place Addition project. As we reported last summer, the 7-Eleven will stay, along with the new ViewPoint Bank, My Office, the vet clinic, the former florist space and the strip that holds Highlands Café and T. Hee Greetings. Everything else will be demolished. White Rock Place Addition, comprised of 17 single-family homes by three different builders — Highland Classic Homes, Nobility Homes and New Leaf Construction — could be complete by April 2012, Highland Classic Homes’ Mark Dann tells us. “We will need the weather to cooperate to meet that deadline,”

A mAnly exhortAtion Take the Rough Rider’s advice and go to church this year If you aren’t already a regular churchgoer, my New Year’s resolution for you is to become one. To strengthen my appeal, I enlist the old Rough Rider, President Theodore Roosevelt. I’ll splice in my own comments to spice up his “Ten Reasons to Go to Church,” which appeared in a 1917 edition of The Ladies Home Journal. (As always, substitute your own religious tradition for church; this is not the place to proselytize. Likewise, know that when Teddy says “men” he also means “women,” although they don’t seem to need as much convincing.) 1. In this actual world a churchless community, a community where men have abandoned and scoffed at or ignored their religious needs, is a community on the rapid downgrade. Human beings are made to relate upwards (spiritually), sideways (socially), and downwards (naturally), so to speak. We stand most erect when we attend well to all these relationships. 2. Church work and church attendance mean the cultivation of the habit of feeling some responsibility for others and the sense of braced moral strength which prevents a relaxation of one’s own moral fiber. We are what we do. If we want to be better, we have to act our way to it through practice. 3. There are enough holidays … devoted to pure holiday making. … Sundays differ from other holidays, among other ways, in the fact that there are fifty-two of them every year. … On Sunday, go to church. Amen. 4. Yes, I know all the excuses. I know that one can worship the Creator ... in a grove of trees, or by a running brook, or in one’s own house, just as well as in church. But I also know as a matter of cold fact the average man does not thus worship or thus dedicate himself. If he stays away from church he does not spend his time in good works or in lofty meditation. He looks over the colored supplement of the newspaper. Today we might watch color TV instead, but this excuse is usually a copout.

church. But unless he is very unfortunate he will hear a sermon by a good man who, with his good wife, is engaged all the week long in a series of wearing and humdrum and important tasks for making hard lives a little easier. I can’t speak for the preacher being a good man, since I only know one well, and he’s a stout blend of good and bad. Going to church helps me move the mix toward the good. It may for you, too. 6. He will listen to and take part in reading some beautiful passages from the Bible. And if he is not familiar with the Bible, he has suffered a loss. Verily. 7. He will probably take part in singing some good hymns. OK, they’re not all good. And some are just choruses. But when the valley of the shadow of death looms, humming Lady Gaga won’t get you through. 8. He will meet and nod to, or speak to, good, quiet neighbors. … He will come away feeling a little more charitably toward all the world, even towards those excessively foolish young men who regard church-going as rather a soft performance. Many non-attending men seem to fear losing manliness in church, as if it’s really a woman’s world. Jesus was a real man, but he did love his mother. Just saying. 9. I advocate a man’s joining in church works for the sake of showing his faith by his works. Here, here. Real community is come-and-stay commitment, not comeand-go consumerism. 10. The man who does not ... connect himself with some active, working church misses many opportunities for helping his neighbors, and therefore, incidentally, for helping himself. Good church is good for you. Look for a good church that you can find, not a perfect one that you never will. Though many of these may seem quaint and old fashioned, the point is still the same today: God is worthy of worship, neighbors need caring for, and our souls require spiritual exercise.

IN YOUR OWN HOME

Lake Highlands’ Madeline Apartment owners Joe Killinger and George Pino created the Rent Rite Directory to help better screen prospective residents. The comprehensive database offers free incident reports designed to alert landlords to write-offs, criminal activity, skips (people who take the first month free and then bail) and proxy renters (those who sign leases on behalf of tenants that would not otherwise be qualified to rent due to criminal history) and a moderately priced tenant screening service (includes credit and criminal history reports). Through the Project Samaria initiative, members of Prestoncrest Church of Christ in Preston Hollow donated shoes to more than 100 students at Wallace Elementary in Lake Highlands. The students are Burmese refugees who live below the poverty line. To see a video of the shoe drive, visit lakehighlands.advocatemag.com and search “Project Samaria.” Vickery Meadow Learning Center is expanding to West Dallas and needs 24 additional volunteers for afternoon classes at the campus at 1018 Gallagher. Opportunities also are available at the Vickery Meadow location, 6329 Ridgecrest. VMLC is a nonprofit that provides literacy classes to non-English speaking adults in the low-income neighborhood bound by Royal Lane, Central Expressway, Northwest Highway, and Abrams/Skillman. This month’s volunteer orientations are 9-11:30 a.m. or 6:30-9 p.m. Jan. 5, and noon-2:30 p.m. Jan. 9. For more information, call 214.265.5057 or visit vmlc.org.

THE SUSPECT LEAPED THROUGH THE WINDOW. Complex Business, Commercial or Family Disputes?

William R. Wilson Attorney at Law There are often many ways to avoid or resolve a dispute without costly litigation.

Family Law, Civil Litigation, Business Matters, and Wills & Probate

The man seemed out of place, milling about in front Jack Reynolds’s home. Reynolds was not at home, so his neighbor across the street eyed the man closely. The suspect looked around and then peeked through the window. Soon the man disappeared behind the home — and then a light came on inside. The Good Samaritan across the street quickly phoned the neighbor right next to Reynolds’s home, and then called police. The neighbor then approached Reynolds’s home, but found the suspect already had fled.

The Victim: Jack Reynolds The Crime: Burglary Date: Wednesday, Nov. 16 Time: 6:30 p.m. Location: 9300 block of Leaside

“They got what they could in two minutes,” Reynolds says. Unfortunately, the thief’s loot included some jewelry, a laptop computer, and a

Smith and Wesson .38-caliber revolver. The pistol was the biggest loss. Reynolds had owned the gun for more than 60 years, and it had been a gift from his father-inlaw. He has lived in the area since 1956, but has experienced very little crime. In recent months, the area has had two other breakins, he says. Dallas Police Sgt. Keitric Jones of the Northeast Patrol Division says to always check doors and windows to make sure they are locked. Cool weather may be great for opening windows and letting in the fresh air, but forgetting to lock them can be costly. Even though Reynolds’s watchful neighbor wasn’t able to prevent the crime completely, Jones says this crime is a great example of how a neighborhood watch can prevent a criminal from getting away with considerable stolen property. “Get involved in your neighborhood crime watch group,” he says. “It’s very important to get to know as many neighbors as possible so if they see something suspicious, they can call the police.”

With friends like these … do we need taxpayer money for libraries? Comment. Visit lakehighlands.advocatemag.com and search Audelia Library to tell us what you think.

Compared to other Texas cities, Dallas residents rank near the top for library visits, per capita. (Go, Dallas!) Yet, when it comes to library funding, we rank among the lowest — not only in Texas, but in the nation, too. Four years ago, our library budget was $32.3 million. Since then, it has been slashed almost in half — this year’s budget is $18.2 million. If that doesn’t bother you, consider this: Fort Worth spends roughly 40 percent more per capita than Dallas on its library system. I hope Mayor Mike Rawlings will correct this embarrassment before the next fiscal year begins in October. During a recent visit to the Audelia Road Library, I approached a woman shelving books to ask a few questions. I quickly learned I was speaking to Sandra King, the new branch manager, and I asked her how the library had been coping with the budget cuts. King told me that the Audelia branch’s hours haven’t changed, but the city moved staff around — King transferred from Arcadia Park to replace the Audelia manager when she retired. One impact of the budget cuts was happening right in front of me. “Now, we all help shelving books,” King says.

The need for help is understandable because Audelia Road has the highest circulation of all the branches in the Dallas system. (Go, Lake Highlands!) Our talk about shelving quickly led to talk of volunteer support, most of which comes from the Audelia Road Library Friends. The friends have been raising funds for our local branch since 1998. Their efforts translate to furniture, book shelves and carts, signage and even community garden activities for kids. Board member Janice Fowler leads the gardening effort. “The city cuts the grass,” Fowler told me. “That’s all they do.” Fowler donates generous amounts of time and energy beautifying the library’s landscape. Whenever I hear about taxpayers taking over maintenance tasks at a public building, I wonder if the city might be abdicating its responsibility. But some people believe patrons of the library should pay to maintain it, instead of taxpayers. Walt McCool, president of the Audelia Road Friends, doesn’t subscribe to that belief. “I have a lot of nostalgia for libraries from when I was a kid,” McCool says. “I don’t remember there ever being an admission fee.” In today’s world of ebooks and Google, might public libraries become obsolete? One glaring problem with both is that they require access to electronics. “There are so many people who don’t have access,” McCool says. “That’s what a library has always done.

But it’s more than that. It’s a community. It’s a meeting place. People do things at the library they can’t do anywhere else.” Relying on Google or Wikipedia for research has its obvious limitations. Wikipedia isn’t always accurate. Google and other search engines sell prime placement on the first pages of a search. How often do we look beyond the first page? And, while these searches are free today, they may not remain free in the future. Meanwhile, on a typical weekday afternoon at Audelia Library, it’s hard to find a computer that isn’t in use. Often we think of the library as a place that serves children (storytime, summer programs) and seniors (fixed income, extra time, and they read “real” books). But on a recent weekday visit at 2 p.m., I observed a mixed crowd: men, women, college students, professionals and retirees. McCool says friends of library branches across the city always turn up at town hall meetings and at City Hall to advocate for libraries at budget time, but he expressed doubt that the city will reverse its trend of cuts. “Once they started taking the axe to the budget, support of Friends’ groups became all that much more important,” he says. I agree and I disagree. I agree that supporting a library’s friends is important (visit audelialibraryfriends.org for more info), but I am holding on to hope that as long as Fort Worth spends more than we do on its libraries, Dallas will not rest easy.
