PRE-RECESSION BLINDERS ARE OFF

It now appears that Dallasites had the best vision

I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but the days of blindly buying things for ourselves are over. Forever. And ever.

That’s what the national media says: that Americans’ general lack of wealth is contributing to more sustainable personal spending, that today we’re spending disposable income while for the past 20 or 30 years, we’ve been spending everything we had plus a lot we didn’t.

It’s an interesting thought, isn’t it, that the economic crisis has permanently changed our lives, that we’ll never again live beyond our means and that in the future, we’ll always do what’s “right” economically, and we’ll always use our heads before spending money instead of

just buying whatever we see advertised on TV as long as we still have some plastic in our pocket.

The national media experts say we’re volunteering more, attending more cultural events with family and friends, spending more time together talking and, even though we’re still going to the malls, we’re not spending as much money there because we’re just using malls as places to hang out.

It’s good to know that facing down economic Armegeddon has done so many good things for our lives.

What intrigues me is that a lot of us don’t know which way the wind is blowing, even if there’s a flag right in front of us. We depend on the cues of others to determine our direction, and we feel intimidated if we make a decision that goes against the grain, even when we’re right. It’s not so much herd mentality as it is fear of being wrong alone. Being wrong together is OK, but being wrong alone is flat-out scary.

here. The schools are better out there, so the thought process went, the buildings newer, the houses bigger and the streets smoother.

But now that so many of us supposedly can’t afford to live too far from work, and we don’t want to be too far from schools, and we want to make sure our kids experience all that life has to offer, living here where we live is starting to look better to a lot of suburbanites. Dallas is a city that, despite its well-known problems, has never been more vibrant. Many of our neighborhoods are on the upswing. Our public schools, while not perfect, have improved. Our public transportation, while still limited, is expanding. For better or worse, we’ve invested a lot of our tax dollars Downtown, and the place is starting to look good even if there’s still plenty of room for improvement.

LOOK AWAY FROM THE STRIP CLUB

Mr. Keffer, how about winding down this diatribe against the strip clubs and start focusing your energies on something important [December Advocate,“Last Word: More of the Same ‘Ol SOB”]? I am not a fan of the clubs, but apparently enough folks like it well enough to patronize them on a regular basis. First, it is on a commercial section of Plano Road where neighboring businesses are closed down at 5 p.m. on weekdays and most weekends. It has no impact or effect whatsoever that I can determine on our residential neighborhoods. Second, it appeals to enough customers that they are a thriving business; they make business income; and they pay needed taxes. Third, if you don’t personally care for their venue, just don’t go there. If enough people felt as you do about these businesses, they would have no customers, go broke, and close themselves down. We are all entitled to individual choices of how we spend our time and money. We have many more challenges that affect us Lake Highlands residents. Surely someone with your experience could become an advocate for local issues that would be of tremendous benefit to us all. How about a reassessment of how best you can make a meaningful impact on our community beside picking on a whipping boy that has minimal impact on our lives or property?

Remodeling Talk...

How to “Go Green” in 2010

A rustic wooden door that opened on a hinge a century ago now functions as a sliding partition between a home office and a guest room. It’s one of many skillful uses of architectural salvage in Rob and Suzy Renz’s newly remodeled home. Passing through, it seems a serendipitous symbol of a new era in Green home design.

In every room, carefully restored doors, cabinetry, beams, and stained glass are married perfectly with modern design elements. Reclaimed wood from a basketball gym floor –with some of the artwork still intact – finds new life in the living room and as counter tops. Century-old barn beams adorn the red and yellow checkered kitchen ceiling, creating a quaint, but inspired country look. Door frames are faux painted and distressed to match the doors. Walls are textured to complement the embedded antique cabinets. But this isn’t a cliche “old meets new” theme. It’s a home infused with a consciousness for preservation of all things valuable. Including money.

The Renz’s care as much about conserving their budget as they do about conserving antiquities and finite global resources. Their area home remodeling project is a fascinating study in Green design, 2010. That’s why it’s the first profiled home in what will be a monthly column in The Advocate, brought to you by The Bella Vista Company. We’ll cover everything from the roof to the foundation in home building, designing and remodeling.

Here are some Green ideas from the Renz remodel you might consider for your own home (which could become the subject of a future “Remodeling Talk” profile):

Metal Roofing

Metal Roofing lowers utility bills by deflecting heat away from the attic, unlike asphalt shingles. Plus, metal roofs are attractive, easy to install, fireproof, lightweight, recyclable, and last for decades, saving you money today and tomorrow.

Tankless Hot Water Heater

Tankless water heaters have become inexpensive and the savings quickly recoup your investment. Because they heat on demand, rather than run on standby, they save you from the extra cost of antiquated tank systems. They’re quick-heating and space-efficient too!

Dense, Airtight Insulation

Dense insulation not only lowers utility bills by keeping the house cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, but it also keeps out unwanted noise. Like the sound of neighbors opening their utility bills.

Using Reclaimed Materials

The Renz’s used antiques and reclaimed wood from surprising sources. Every room has an interesting focal point that is sure to generate curiosity and compliments. “We’re not generic people and we didn’t want a generic house,” as Suzy described… “with Bella Vista working with us from vision to fruition, our imagination is our only limit.”

Rob and Suzy Renz

“We feel good about doing our part, for the environment and the cost savings. With green building, if you can imagine it, it can probably be done. The key is having a builder that will go the extra mile to do all of these things….building in the architectural salvage, making sure we were happy about the insulation in every room. At each stage of the building process, we had a meeting and talked about our progress and our options. Bella Vista has been a dream to work with.”

The contents of COURTNEY ROBERTS’ bedroom — bed brimming with fuzzy stuffed animals, windowsills stocked with horseback-riding awards and soccer trophies, walls adorned in puppy pictures and kitty calendars, and shelves upon shelves of books — give us a glimpse into her 9-year-old mind. The St. Patrick Catholic School fourth-grader and author of “UH-OH! Cat” recently allowed us into her room, and she let us pick her brain about her tall tales, ranging interests and ambitions for the future.

Your bed is covered in stuffed animals, so where do you sleep?

Right in the middle of them!

What gave you the idea for the “UH-OH! Cat” book?

My power writing teacher [Mrs. Suter, third grade] told us to write a story. I had the idea of UH-OH! from my two cats [pauses thoughtfully] and because I wanted cake.

For that answer to make more sense, might you give us a quick description oF the story you wrote?

mom is baking a cake for John — John is my cousin who also goes to st. patrick. mom goes out to the store and while she’s gone, the cat really wants the cake and keeps trying not to think about the cake, but he can’t stop thinking about the cake. [spoiler alert] cat gets into the cake. he tries to clean it up, and he feels bad.

so, is there a lesson For kids in this story?

yes. even if you do something bad, your family still loves you.

what does mrs. suter think oF you turning the assignment into a book? she didn’t even know until this year that it was because of her.

i heard your book was helping animals, how’s that?

every book i sell donates $1 to the spca i am also selling uh oh! cat wristbands for $4 and giving $1 of that to the spca

what made you want to give your money to them?

i saw this really sad commercial [yep, we know the one — that heart-wrenching spot featuring singer sarah mclachlan], and it made me want to give some of the money to help animals have clean cages and food. i also have asked for my birthday gifts for the past three years to be donations to the spca

so you’ve gone without birthday giF ts For the past three years? well, people sometimes still give me presents. sometimes they give presents and the money [to the spca].

what was it like to read your book in Front oF the whole school? weird, scary. my cousin John says, “why’d you put my name in it?”

do you plan to keep being a writer as you grow up?

[shrugs] i really want to be an architect, because i like to draw. i have another book coming out soon called “uh-oh! giraffe”, so we’ll see how well that does.

Purchase “uh-Oh! cat” at The Store in Lake Highlands, or through Courtney’s website, uhohanimals.com, where you can also play the UH-OH video game. You can also follow Courtney Roberts on Facebook.

a guide through the maze oF city-related questions

?cars are always speeding down my street. how can i get road humps installed to make them slow down?

the city of dallas has a program specifically designed to allow residents to petition for road humps (also known as road bumps) on a street, but it’s not a simple process, and depending on the average speed of cars on your street, it may cost you. if money is not a stop sign for you on the road to safer streets, here’s how it works:

214.670.4020. t hey will instigate a review of the location by dallas Firerescue to confirm eligibility.

2. if your street qualifies for the program, you must petition for signatures from two-thirds of the households on the proposed stretch of road in order to install road humps. once complete, the petition can be sent to: road hump coordinator, department of p ublic works and transportation, city hall, room l1/ bn, dallas, t X 75201.

3. a pproximately three weeks after the petition is received, the city will perform a traffic study to determine the average speed of vehicles on the street. t his will determine how much of the total cost the residents must pay.

1. several requirements must be met for your street to be deemed eligible for the program, so first you need to see if yours qualifies. t he four main criteria are that your street must:

• be at least 1,000 feet long and provide access to “adjoining lowdensity residential properties” (meaning single-family homes, duplexes, triplexes and fourplexes — not apartment complexes)

• have only one traffic lane in each direction

• not be listed as an emergency response route by dallas Firerescue

• Have a posted speed limit of 30 mph or less

to find out if your street qualifies, contact the city of dallas p ublic works and transportation department at

4. b ased on the findings, residents will have to decide whether they are willing to pay for their share of the road humps, each of which measure 12 feet long and 3 inches high, and cost $1,100. if the city finds that traffic violators are traveling at an average speed of 35 mph, residents are responsible for 100 percent of the cost. a n average speed of 36 mph, however, reduces residents’ share to 80 percent; 37 mph reduces it to 60 percent; 38 to 40 percent; and if violators are driving at average speeds of 39+ mph, the city will foot the entire bill.

For more information, contact the p ublic works and transportation department at 214.670.4020.

DIDJAKNOW?

The tune to the Lake Highlands High School alma mater is that of an old Welch folk song, “All Through the Night”, but the origin of its words is decidedly closer to home. In 1960, Margaret Johnson [now Barnard], a seventh-grader at Lake Highlands Junior High, penned the now well-known verse, “Hail Lake Highlands, We salute thee, All through the years ...”. She entered her lyrics in a songwriting competition open to Lake Highlands students. “My band teacher, Mr. [Howard] Dunn told us about the contest, and I went home and, with the help of my older sister, wrote the words,” says Barnard, who played the clarinet in the LHJH band at the time. Her big sister, who attended high school in Richardson, never got any of the glory for her part in the creative process, Barnard says. (She jokes that she didn’t necessarily want recognition because “some people thought the words were dumb.”) Band director Dunn wrote the Alma Mater’s musical arrangement. It stuck. “I’m a little surprised it has lasted so long,” Barnard says. It was exciting, as a 13-yearold, to win the contest, she says, but adds that there wasn’t much competition.

“I think maybe only two or three other students entered,” she says with a laugh. Today she lives in Illinois, but returns to Lake Highlands a couple times a year to visit her son.

“It honestly felt like an elephant was sitting on my chest,” says David Thomasson of the pain he experienced during his heart attack. “I thought heart disease was something that happened to old people.”

After examining him, the cardiovascular team at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas told David he needed quadruple bypass surgery and explained how a pump would take over for his heart during the procedure. “It’s a really amazing machine,” he says.

Today, David is going strong. And he’s extremely grateful both for the care he received and the Heart-Lung machine which saved his life. “I gave it a big hug when I saw it,” he says.

Occasionally, Amy Marks comes home to find a bowling ball at her doorstep. “There’s no note with it or anything,” she says. “Somebody just left it and I have no idea who it was.” People bring them to her because she’s the bowling ball lady of Dallas. Instead of planting colorful blooms (she says she’s “lousy at flowers”), Marks paints bowling balls and arranges them in the garden of her Capri Drive home. “I’m up to 97 now,” she says. Marks is an artist who recently won accolades at the State Fair of Texas for her handmade dolls. But for fun, she searches thrift stores, garage sales and flea markets for old bowling balls. They’re harder to find than they used to be, she says. And many thrift stores don’t sell them for fear of some kid lobbing one across the store. Marks remembers that she and her nephew once found seven balls in one red-letter day. The bowling ball garden of Capri Drive will continue to grow, she says. “Of course, now I want 100.”

The old adage “good things come in small packages” is not always true with canines. Sometimes little dogs are yippy yappy things, no? But tiny, perfectly coifed SOPHIE looks so sweet in her shiny red bow, that we know neither a yip nor a yap could ever escape her precious face. She’s an absolute “angel” — at least that’s what her people parents GARY and PAULA FEISEL of Lake Highlands tell us.

cheap in a good way

T H e wiN e T ri AL s 2010 ($15)

robin Goldstein may know more about cheap wine than any one else. He is the co-author and guiding force of “The Wine Trials 2010”, the second edition of the book that rates 150 of the best wines in the world that cost less than $15. His method — blind tastings — and his results — cheap wines that have fared significantly better than more famous and more expensive ones — have infuriated the mainstream wine world. One eminent wine writer went so far as to call Goldstein’s approach “almost an anti-intellectual position.”

Which is an interesting thing to say, given that the book has a scientific advisory board and 30 footnotes, in addition to the 150 wine ratings. (Full disclosure: I participated in one of the blind tasting panels for the first edition in 2008.)

More than anything else, the mainstream wine world, which has so much invested in the concept that expensive wine is always better than less expensive wine, doesn’t like the idea that a wine can’t be judged by its price. I don’t know that I agree with all 150 wines in the book (and I’ve tasted all but 25 or so); many simple, fruity wines did better than they should have, and there aren’t enough rosés again this year. but Goldstein’s concept is sound. Price is a better guide to quality than a cute label, but it’s not the be-all and end-all the experts want us to think it is.

Here are three of my favorites from this year’s selections:

• Rene Barbier Mediterranean White (about $6). Chill this, and drink it when the summer heat makes you crazy. I tasted it with some wine types when I did a story about $6 wine a couple of years ago, and we were stunned at how well-made it was.

• Falesco Vitiano Red (about $12). One of my all-time favorite wines — bring on the red sauce and Italian sausages, and marvel that a wine this well-made could be this inexpensive.

• Casteller Cava (about $12). This sparkling wine from Spain is a step up from $8 cavas like Cristalino — a little richer and a little less tight (a wine term that denotes where the flavors seem crammed together.)—Jeff

WITH YOUR WINE

Last-minute spaghetti sauce

Spaghetti sauce in a jar is not necessary. This takes almost as little time, and it tastes more like tomato sauce and less like salt. Serve this over your favorite pasta and with the Vitiano. If you’re feeling adventurous, chop some onion, celery, carrot and bell pepper in a food processor so it’s very fine, and sauté in a little olive oil before you add the garlic and liquid ingredients.

Serves 6, takes about 20 minutes

1 28-oz can tomato puree

2 6-oz cans tomato paste

2 cloves garlic, chopped

1 Tbsp olive oil

2 bay leaves

Salt and pepper to taste

1 to 2 c water, red wine or white wine

1.Brown the garlic in the olive oil over medium heat in a large pot until the garlic is fragrant. Add everything else except the water or wine and mix well.

2.Add the water or wine a little at a time, until the sauce is as thick or thin as you like it (you may not use all of the liquid). Bring to a boil, cover, and simmer 10 or 15 minutes.

ask the WINE GUY?

Q. WHAT’S THE BIGGEST WINEPRODUCING STATE IN THE COUNTRY?

A. In 2008, California produced 90 percent of the wine made in the United States, according to the Wine Institute. That figure has remained consistent since 1995.

CAPELESS CRUSADERS

How little acts of selflessness make a big difference in our neighborhood

They can’t leap tall buildings in a single bound, and they won’t outrun a train, but these neighbors do out-of-the-ordinary things that improve our lives. They don’t act heroically for recognition — they typically laugh away the notion they’re heroes at all. These neighbors simply give of themselves because that’s how they tap their own sense of satisfaction and accomplishment.

Arthiss

The upstairs area of arthiss Kliever’s Lake Highlands home is a landscape of sundry colors, bold titles and possibilities spilling forth — bright yellow and red shelves hold rows of children’s books, well-worn and brand-new, picturesque and copy-heavy, fantastic and historical. eager neighborhood kids pore through pages — there are about 8,000 books to date — trying to decide which are worthy of checking out. The limit is five.

Whatever your child’s interest happens to be at the time (and every parent knows that changes from week to week), Mrs. K will have a book to satisfy, says Tiffany Walker, mother of a 5-year-old and a 17-month-old.

“reading a book is one of the best gifts you can give a child. Here, it’s free. Mrs. K loves, nurtures and cherishes the children like her own,” Walker says. “I feel like a better mom after a visit to the little library.”

Kliever, known as Mrs. K to droves of young library members, decided to turn her home into Launa’s Little Library after her daughter Launa, a former schoolteach-

“I didn’t want to let the books go,” Kliever says, “but I knew I wanted to get them in the hands of kids.”

Though it’s not part of the tra-

its popularity grows, but it is well worth the work.

“It combines my favorite things — I’m not an avid reader but I love children’s books. I love the detail work. I love the kids. Every part is fun,” she says.

“I’ve watched kids grow up in the seven years I’ve been doing this. I cherish the interaction with the little patrons, and we just have so many loyal families that I have gotten to know,” she says.

Other neighbors also have contributed to the unconventional library’s success, she says.

ditional library system, Launa’s Library is run just as efficiently. Kliever worked 10 years in the Southern Methodist University library, and she’s a stickler for organization right down to the oldschool checkout system and card catalog. It’s not easy to keep up, especially as word of the library spreads around Lake Highlands and

For example, over the summer, a group of kids set up a lemonade stand and donated the profits to Launa’s. And the Lake Highlands Exchange Club recently awarded Kliever $1,000 to purchase books.

But no reward could be sufficient for a place so “magical”, Walker says.

“It’s just hard to believe all that [Kliever] has done — she has created a magical place that takes you back to the Wally-Beaver Cleaver days.”

TERRY KING

The gift gatherer

On a frigid morning in December — while many might have been cozying up by the fireplace, sipping morning java — Terry King was making sure that about 300 disadvantaged kids were going to enjoy Christmas.

King heads up a project called Annie’s Kids through Lake Highlands United Methodist Church. That Saturday morning, she worked with fellow church members to distribute Christmas gifts to Lake Highlands families located through elementary school counselors who gave King names of families unable to afford to buy presents for their children. Church members adopt those families and fill their wish lists.

“It works like the Angel Tree that they

have at NorthPark every Christmas,” King says. “The parents, mostly, are very grateful. Sometimes they try to explain why they can’t afford the gifts — like by writing ‘out of work’ on the wish list, for example.”

“The project requires a lot of work on her part,” says Don Lee, a member of the church and the Lake Highlands Exchange Club.

“It isn’t just me. It’s a whole team of folks,” King says.

The congregation and organizations such as the Exchange Club are always generous, she says. King has no children and says maybe that’s meant to be.

“I think this might just be what I’m supposed to be doing instead,” she says.

Her work isn’t entirely focused on the holiday season, either. While she was working with the school counselors, she asked about immediate needs. Staffers at Skyview Elementary told her some students desperately needed uniforms.

“Some parents couldn’t buy one pair of pants, much less two so they could alternate clothes day by day. They needed socks, underwear and basics, so we rounded up the money to buy them the things they needed,” King says.

“Don (and the Exchange Club) came through with a donation for the uniforms. The counselors from Skyview were wonderful to work with. I am just a facilitator.”

Barring a blizzard or a rainstorm, Darrell Wood can be spotted every morning purposefully walking the streets of his White Rock Lake area neighborhood.

“If you drive along Easton in the morning — every morning — you’ll see him picking up trash in the median for blocks and blocks. Keeping this neighborhood garbagefree seems to be his goal,” says Reba Liner, who works at Central Lutheran Church on Easton, which is on Wood’s daily route.

Trash removal isn’t Wood’s sole goal — he’s also on the lookout for crime and suspicious behavior.

“When I’m out there, I have my cell phone with me, and I’m actually doing my neighborhood crime patrol on foot,” Wood says.

Once, he says, he caught two guys breaking into a storage building.

“Picking up trash is a good cover for crime patrol,” he says with a smile.

Since moving to the area in 1973, Woods has served on the neighbor-

executive board. He rallies neighbors to become involved, and he helps train others for volunteer organizations such as Citizens Helping in Parking Solutions (CHIPS) and the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).

Wood’s extraordinary involvement is rooted in a desire to keep the neighborhood where he and wife Kay live “safe and sound,” he says. Recently he saw the fruits of one of his endeavors come to fruition at the dedication of a playground in the Dixon Branch area.

“I went to a lot of meetings, worked closely with our city councilman and [other neighborhood associations] … and worked to get funding,” he says.

The Bump and Beyond , a baby planning and concierge service, was recently started by Lake Highlands and East Dallas residents Aryn Self and Angela Huston. Designed to guide their clients through the entire process of planning for a baby, services range from organizing the nursery, ordering baby announcements, and medical and baby assistance referrals to planning babymoons and baby showers. Self and Huston, lawyers by trade, were working for the same law firm when they discovered they were both pregnant with due dates only three weeks apart. After learning first-hand about all that goes into baby-planning and prep, the first-time moms saw an opportunity in the Dallas area with this burgeoning business model that’s becoming popular in some other large markets, and launched the new biz just a few months ago. Visit thebumpandbeyond.com to get more information and check out a list of services (all of which can be ordered a la carte if that’s your preference) or call 214.662.8656 and set up a complimentary consultation.

Jackie and Bill Marra opened On Wheels Computer Repair a year and a half ago in the old Hollywood Video Store on Northwest Highway and Plano Road. Bill Marra has been in the computer-fixin’ biz for himself for the past 18 years. The couple have been Casa Linda residents for the past 10+ years and opted to open a store-front in the area to accommodate their expanding client base. Customers can bring their computers to the shop, or the Marras offer a convenient in-home repair service if the thought of unplugging all those computer cords is enough to give you an anxiety attack. Jackie Marra explained that one of the most requested services is their virus scan and clean, which is priced at $95. Advocate readers can visit owcronline.com and click on “specials” to get a coupon for $15 off the popular service.

Cuzco Latin Cuisine is “coming soon” to a 3100-square-foot spot at 9220 Skillman near Audelia in the shopping center that

was once home to Flavor restaurant. In that same area, there’s a new sandwich joint, Samich’s Sandwiches, which has taken over a spot that was a Quiznos back in the day. The new eatery has a fairly wide variety of sandwiches, soups and salads. The owner, Arturo, who hails from Chicago, is a friendly, outspoken chap, who is very optimistic about his new biz. He offers free Wi-Fi and plans to feature live music and entertainment in the coming months.

Lake Highlands resident Cindy Serine, owner of c indy Serine Photography, started her home-based photography business eight years ago. Lake Highlands resident Amy Schroeder developed a passion for cards, invitations, stationery and gifts while working part-time at Ann’s Hallmark, formerly at Skillman and Abrams (closed down in ’96) while attending Lake Highlands High School. “After entering the business world and particularly after my husband and I had our first son, my search for quality paper products was often frustrated by not being able to find good customer service ... I chose to embark on my childhood passion and Sunshine Paperie was born.” Sunshine Paperie offers a variety of paper products and gifts including fun invitations, sippy cup labels, placemats, enclosure cards, note cards and loads more products that are a hit with lots of busy moms. FeaRle SS lOve

NOT YOUR TYPICAL VALENTINE ’ S D AY AMORE

“There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear.”

So says the writer of 1 John (4:18). But if fear and love are mortal — if not immortal — enemies, then how do we perfect love in order to cast out fear?

Valentine’s Day month raises love to red levels. We want to tell our lovers how much we love them, and yet our conceptions of love are often misconstrued.

My 26-year-old expectant daughter confessed to me recently her fear every time her husband goes out of town. (Yes, permission granted to relay this story.) She becomes too consumed with worry that something will happen to him. She knows she needs to get a grip on it, but how?

Sometimes fear masquerades as love. When I asked Cameron why she fears bad things happening to Garrett, she said because she loves him and she doesn’t know how she would live without him.

Perfect love involves being all in. It makes you vulnerable to pain and loss, because you have set your heart on someone and hold nothing back. For her husband to suffer an accident means she will suffer along with him. A fatal fate will mean that a part of her will die with him. That’s the nature of love, and it’s not the product of fear.

Perfect love is not indifferent to tragedy. In fact, indifference is the enemy of love, more so than hate. Love is always engaged. It weds two hearts for better or worse.

The answer then to gnawing fear is not caring less or caring more but caring differently.

Caring less creates a distance from your partner that puts up a protective shield and thus casts out love. Disengagement like that deals with fear at the cost of intimacy.

Enmeshment is just as deadly a strategy. It’s not really caring more. When in the name of love someone feels unable to imagine the future without someone else, two hearts have become one. As romantic as that sounds on the surface, it’s actually fear disguised as love.

To love someone perfectly means to stand alongside that one and walk together in a

closeness unlike any other. The dearest sympathy recognizes the boundaries of each individual. It holds hands, so to speak, rather than trying to live inside the other person’s skin. Empathy like that shrinks love instead of stretching it.

True love acknowledges the infinite mystery of the other person’s existence and celebrates it. It respects the distinction of one soul to another and looks with wonder for all

the surprises and discoveries that may yet be revealed in the other. It lives with perpetual gratitude that, no matter what else may come, love abides.

Whenever someone tries to control or contain another, even in the name of love, that mystery is violated by encroaching fear and love is threatened.

Perfect love lives in perfect freedom. Fear turns freedom into slavery. Slavery may result in a relationship of duty, but never love. Love allows the lover his or her own thoughts and feelings and beliefs — it even revels in them. This love in freedom looks like faithfulness. So what to do about a loving wife’s fear of losing her husband, or vice versa. Imagine the worst outcome possible and face it with faith. Then let it go. Even death cannot defeat love. Nothing can separate us from the love of God, after all.

There may be pain with love. There may be loss with love. But there needn’t be fear.

When all is said and done, we will not be undone. Faith in the God who raises the dead out of love can live free of fear and full of love.

TheVictim: Matthew Bosch

TheCrime: Theft

Date: Friday, Dec. 18

Time: Between 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Location: 9600 block of Dartridge

THEY WERE EXPECTING A PARCEL, BUT FOUND ONLY AN EMPTY BOX.

MatthewBosch was expecting to receive a package in mid-December. His wife is a representative of Creative Memories, which specializes in scrapbooking products. The company offers a plan to sell its products through small get-togethers with friends and parties. For many it’s a fun way to earn some extra bucks through a fun hobby. As a representative, she had ordered about $200 worth of albums and other products, many of which were to be Christmas presents for clients.

Bosch checked his wife’s account on Dec. 18 and knew the package should be arriving at their home in Lake Highlands Village North that day.

“We went to the site and saw that it was confirmed as delivered,” Bosch says. “When we went to go get it on the doorstep, there was a completely empty box from two blocks away.”

Bosch called police, and says a thief had been snatching boxes at homes and leaving the empty box from a previous house so that no one would notice a package was missing.

“Someone had to be running around replacing boxes with empty ones,” he says.

Bosch contacted the person the empty box should have been delivered to. The shipment had been form Amazon. Fortunately, Amazon and Creative Memories both made good on the original orders, Bosch says.

“It’s very cool,” he says of the companies’ efforts to reimburse their products. “But it’s also frustrating someone would do that. You can’t watch your front porch every minute of the day.”

Senior Cpl. BertRippy with the Dallas Police Northeast Patrol Division says this crime is common during the holidays and offers some tips to prevent package theft.

“Around the holidays, this type of theft increases due to the amount of packages being delivered and left on porches,” Rippey says.

He recommends requesting signature confirmation on delivery, having packages delivered at work, tracking packages online for exact delivery date, and having a neighbor or friend pick up packages when out of town.

“Leave special instructions for where to deliver the packages,” Rippey adds. “A good place is on the side or back of the house, so that the package cannot be seen by some one walking or driving by in the front of your house.”

BAD RAP

I S THE DAILy PAPE r P

POSELy P u TTING L AKE HIGHLANDS IN A POOr LIGHT ?

In this month known for hosting Valentine’s Day, I hereby throw down my heart-shaped bouquet of rose-petal potpourri and demand that our one and only major daily newspaper (a.k.a the Dallas Morning News) start showing Lake Highlands some love. The frequency and relentlessness of their negative reporting has cast aspersions upon, and sullied the reputation of, our community. And when someone starts throwing around terms like “aspersions” and “sullied”, you know that something’s up.

Several months ago, I noticed a story in the paper one day about one of the many stories describing man’s inhumanity to man under a caption in big, bold type — “Lake Highlands”. I was instantly embarrassed and thought what a horrible way for our community to be spotlighted in the paper. And then, I started noticing that almost every time Lake Highlands was mentioned by name in the paper, it was to highlight another crime du jour. I remembered thinking to myself that if a visitor or transplant to Dallas didn’t know any better, his unavoidable impression would have to be to believe that Lake Highlands is the part of Dallas you should consciously avoid.

As any loyal Lake Highlander would be, I became annoyed with the Morning News (for yet one more reason), and decided I would begin monitoring this practice a little more intentionally. And, of course, when it comes to annoying practices, the News did not disappoint.

In September, the paper ran a story under the “Lake Highlands” heading entitled “Art Institute Mourns Student Found Slain”. The victim was a student at the Art

Institute of Dallas but was murdered in her apartment located at Greenville and Forest. The story includes the following delightful Chamberof-Commerce description: “Since January, police have responded to dozens of calls in the area, including robberies, assaults and burglaries, according to Dallas police reports.”

So, y’all come visit us real soon!

In October, the News ran this monthly love note under the big, bold heading “Lake Highlands”: “Police Search for Backyard Flasher”. The story describes a serial flasher, whose indecent exposures date back to 2005. The Dallas Police corporal is quoted: “We would like to catch him before it escalates into something worse ...” So, welcome to family-friendly Lake Highlands!

In November (leading me to believe the News must have a monthly quota requirement for abusing Lake Highlands), this “Lake Highlands”headed story appeared: “Man Held in Stabbing of Disabled Neighbor”. Another apartment crime, man stabs another man with screwdriver because he won’t give him money for a beer, painting yet another attractive picture of our community.

Admittedly, these are all news stories, so perhaps there is no way to avoid having to read about them. But my real ax to grind with the paper is: 1) Why do you have to label these stories with the “Lake Highlands” heading? And 2) If you feel compelled to identify these kinds of stories as having occurred in Lake Highlands, how about running some positive stories about Lake Highlands, too?

Let me, at this point, once again be politically incorrect and state the painfully obvious. Lake Highlands has been saddled with much more than its fair share of apartments, compared to the rest of the city. The crime problem in Lake Highlands is directly related to the concentration of apartments. The No. 1 crime area in the city is Greenville-Park — where there are lots of apartments. The No. 2 crime area is Forest-

Audelia — where there are lots of apartments. When I witnessed a purse-snatching at the old Drug Emporium years ago, the police traced the suspect back to the apartments at Walnut HillAudelia and police told me that they trace a lot of crime back to those apartments. Does anyone doubt that having lots of apartments breeds having lots of crime? If so, please stand by for more hope and change ...

But more to the point of the News’ coverage of Lake Highlands — Lake Highlands is much more than apartments and crime. In fact, we are primarily a community of nice, single-family homes, where property values continue to rise, even during a pronounced recession. We are a community that still revolves around a very successful high school, with a longstanding reputation of producing champions. We are a community that could very well be mistaken as a small town with the daily contributions of internal support manifested by organizations like the Lake Highlands Exchange Club and Lake Highlands Women’s League. We are a community pursuing our own progress through efforts like the Lake Highlands Area Improvement Association, representing all of the HOAs in Lake Highlands, bringing about exciting developments like the new Walmart at Forest-Abrams, the new Sam’s/Walmart/Penney’s complex at Northwest Highway-Skillman, and the signature Town Center at Walnut Hill-Skillman.

So, come on, Dallas Morning News; don’t be the Dallas Morning Blues when it comes to Lake Highlands. In fairness, the News did run a “Lake Highlands” story after Christmas about the peacocks in the neighborhood behind Flagpole Hill. I think it was supposed to come across as complimentary, but it described peacocks “sounding like helicopters”, “screeching” louder and longer than dogs, and leaving their “Hershey’s Kisses” all over the sidewalks.

Sounds like those neighbors need to protect their sidewalks with a little newspaper.
