Professional amatuers

We take our sons’ sports not-too-seriously

This month, my wife and I will wrap up 16 consecutive years of being professional amateur sports parents.

I mean “professional” in the sense that it was nearly a full-time job, what with multiple practices and games most weeks throughout the year. And I mean “amateur” in the sense of beginning with 5-year-old soccer games and continuing through this final season of high school varsity baseball games, we’ve seen hundreds of our sons’ sporting events.

We’ve moaned, groaned and cheered with countless parents on the sidelines for soccer, basketball, baseball and hockey games. We’ve sat through lots of year-end pizza lunches and burger dinners filled with trophies and speeches, and these were for teams that rarely sniffed championships.

In youth sports, there’s the extremely occasional blaze of glory and the rare inspirational, heart-stopping finish. But what I remember most often are the many minutes of my life ticking slowly away in the most surly of weather, with a beat-down on the field occurring at precisely the same moment rain or wind or sun (or all three) beat down on those of us in the stands.

I’m proud to say the young athletes our sons played with generally kept their thoughts to themselves while playing. Most overlooked a teammate’s booted ball or feckless swing or accidental foul; they were happy to be competing, and that is what the sporting experience is supposed to be all about anyway.

But for some in the stands, games took on monumental proportions, with each play prompting inevitably loud commentary from parents perhaps reliving their own lack-of-glory days and hoping to re-

write history through their kids.

Don’t get me wrong: There’s a place in sports for good-natured ribbing of authority, and some parents and grandparents can be hilarious when they’re offering friendly advice to a referee or umpire. (I’ve even seen the refs/umps laugh a time or two.)

But sometimes those charged with administering the rules — regardless of age, ethnicity or sex — became verbal punching bags, with both sides of the inevitably partisan crowd crowing loudly about supposedly mistaken calls, rule interpretations and the like. (The view of accuracy, after all, is much better at a severe angle 150 feet from the action than it is from on the field.)

We were never party to one of those infamous YouTube-fired parent-on-ref or parent-on-parent smackdowns, although I have to say (in jest, of course) that one or two certainly would have brightened some otherwise dismal games. But there were times when we felt sorry for student athletes being loudly embarrassed as their parents — with bulging veins, popping eyes and flapping mouths — made an inevitably futile attempt to influence a game that was of absolutely no long-term consequence anyway.

I would like to believe the collective impact of all of these experiences fueled a sense of fair play, sportsmanship and personal pride in our sons. I would like to believe the thousands of hours invested in these events weren’t simply useless diversions from homework or, more likely, video games.

And I would like to believe our sons, when their own day in the stands arrives, will think twice before turning into family IEDs — improvised exploding dummies.

Honestly, though, my most telling memory of our amateur sporting life comes from a friend, who spotted this phrase on a fellow parent’s T-shirt:

“Lord, if it’s my last day on earth, let me be at a swim meet, since they usually last forever!”

Remodeling Talk...

Avoid Setbacks & Unexpected Costs

It’s all about careful, advanced planning…

Home remodeling is an elaborate process, with many steps that must be executed in the proper sequence. Inexperienced remodelers and their customers often make critical decisions too late and suffer setbacks and unexpected costs as a result. What follows are a few of the most common examples to illustrate just how important it is for a remodeler to involve the customer, make mutual decisions, and execute steps in the proper sequence.

Do you have a story tip or a question?

chughes@advocatemag.com

1. Light Fixtures

Though it seems like a final cosmetic touch, lighting decisions must be made at the rough-in stage because fixtures require different types of electrical wiring and precise placement behind the walls. If you want a dining room chandelier centered over your table, the remodeler needs to know the size of the fixture and the placement of the table at the electric rough stage. Sometimes it’s enough to know that you want a certain type of fixture in a certain place, but at other times, an experienced remodeler will ask you for exact specifications.

2. Plumbing Fixtures

Finish-out fixtures – some of which may seem purely aesthetic – must also be decided early. That’s because plumbing fixtures come with components that must be installed before the sheetrock and tile are put up. You may also want to customize their layout. Maybe you’d like the shower head installed higher if you’re tall,

Kitchen appliances require especially careful, advance planning. For instance, a 48-inch professional style range and other non-standard appliances need to be planned early so that the kitchen can be designed around them. Cabinet decisions are made after the framing and structural shapes are finalized. This is counter-intuitive (no pun intended) for new remodelers and homeowners attempting their first remodel, and delays and added expenses are often the result.

We’ll help you avoid these problems by involving you early and often in all of the important decisions we make together.

Q&A: Ronald Siebler

paralegal-turned-remodeler and historic restoration expert Ron Siebler, a lake Highlands resident, convinces us that the vintage windmill is the epitome of form and function. These towering beauties not only pump water, but they also make admirably visible the force of nature — wind — says Siebler, a romantic who relies on his passion for handiwork and the sweat of his brow to bring old things back to life.

Paralegal to remodeler, huh? How did that happen?

I was laid off. I had accumulated a lot of tools from a home repair ministry I participated in through my church. I’ve always been hands-on, and building is in my blood. My great-great-grandfather was a wagon builder; my great-grandfather and grandfather were blacksmiths. I have a godfather who was a builder, and my dad was a mechanic and eventually an airplane mechanic and a pilot. My own interest began when I was 3, just hammering nails into anything I could find. My first major job, fortunately, was remodeling St. Thomas the Apostle Episcopal Church on Mockingbird at Inwood. It’s nice working on a big church because some of the members of the congregation can see your work and might become clients.

How did the historic renovation come about?

During the time while I was reassessing my life and career, I became very interested in my family’s history and I went to Grand Island, Neb., and apprenticed at the blacksmith shop where my greatgrandfather once worked, on the grounds of Nebraska’s Stuhr Museum. It was so hot in the shop, I would look longingly out the window, wanting to get out in the breeze. That’s when I noticed the broken old windmill. Not spinning. It had been sitting idle for years.

What is it about windmills that intrigues you?

My earliest experience with windmills is in the Nebraska fields with my grandfather — windmills dotted the plains, and I would ride with him, often on horseback, to check the windmills that would supply water to livestock. He would hang metal cups on the windmills so we could always have something to drink from. I can still taste that water. Water from a windmill is the coldest, purist, sweetest-tasting liquid ever. My favorite windmill had a cistern at the base [cisterns stored the windmill-generated water] with a wagon wheel as the cover and surrounded by wild strawberries. My grandfather and I would sit and drink the water from tin cups and eat wild strawber-

With a family history of heart disease, Danny Weatherly is very familiar with cardiovascular procedures. He had his fi rst heart attack at age 39 and has had three angioplasties, a procedure in which a catheter with a balloon on the end is threaded through the femoral artery in the groin. After the procedure, a patient must lie fl at for about six hours to prevent bleeding. At Baylor Jack and Jane Hamilton Heart and Vascular Hospital, Danny underwent a radial artery angioplasty, an innovative new procedure in which the catheter is threaded through a small artery in the wrist. Danny wore a small wristband to control any bleeding and was able to walk around immediately after the procedure. “Baylor gave me more energy. And with 10 grandkids, I need all the energy I can get.”

ries. I also heard stories of my grandmother and her brother climbing to the platforms of the windmills, sitting there and looking over the fields. I have romantic notions about the whole thing.

So you fixed the defunct Nebraskan windmill. Any others?

I have now restored two windmills from the late 1800s-early 1900s, using the tools and methods of the era — one outside the Siebler blacksmith shop in Nebraska and the other one, a victim of hail damage, in Lantana, Texas. The first one, outside the blacksmith shop, was put on display in the museum for a year before it was returned to its spot in the sky where it is now. When my grandfather died at 99, I got from him one of the tin cups that he hung on the Nebraska windmills. The windmills I restore each get their own tin cup.

Blacksmithing is another hobby that is a family legacy?

Yes, in fact my grandfather, William, first taught me to use a hammer — that’s when I was 3. Later I took the apprenticeship to learn my way around the shop and hone my skills. Each apprenticeship has its own unique legacy handed down from generation to generation.

I recently gave a talk at Old City Park about smithing, the origins of metal work, then versus now very few things are still made on the anvil — the blacksmith’s tools are metal, anvil and fire. Today we have machines and tools that definitely make it more efficient, though any decorative metal work still requires intensive labor.

When you have to make a living remodeling an office or a kitchen, does it seem boring compared to the historical renovations?

No, it is a work of art as well. Remodeling is different than building in that we often get to be part of a solution, be creative, and have a say in what is being created. Because I have ancient tools and knowledge of their methods, I have been brought in on some interesting jobs, such as a home in Preston Hollow that is fashioned after “Harry Potter” and “The Hobbit” settings. In remodeling work, there is usually some element of history. When we took the ceiling down at St. Thomas, for example, we found the signature and date of the two carpenters who had done the ceiling 50 years before. Even in homes, it is not unusual to find a signature of the original builders. Bottom line, I have a passion for history and handiwork that has led to various and interesting experiences.

modern, old and new

The White Rock Home Tour is in its sixth year, and it focuses on modern homes in our neighborhood. This year’s tour includes a 1960s home from bygone Dallas architecture firm Ju-Nel Homes Inc. And it includes the brand-new home of Scott and Melissa Powell, on Edgepine. Scott Powell owns New Leaf Inc., a homebuilder that specializes in the modern esthetic. He grew up in Lake Highlands, and the couple lived in Preston Hollow for a while. They chose to return to our neighborhood because of its proximity to White Rock Lake and to raise their three children in the Richardson school district. They also love the mature trees in their subdivision, which was built in the 1950s. Even though their house is new, it seems as if it’s been there forever. “We built it to blend into the neighborhood,” Scott Powell says. The original house was in the mid-century modern style, but it was in bad shape and had to be torn down. In creating the new house, the Powells kept the original footprint and elevation. So the new house has much the same scope as the original. Even though it’s a five-bedroom, five-bath home, it only comprises about 3,300 square feet. An enormous kitchen and great room are the focus of the ground floor, which also includes master and guest suites. The Powells added a second floor, which features a playroom and the children’s bedrooms. The home is centered on a courtyard with a water feature, and a wall of windows invites the backyard into the great room. “It really brings the outdoors in,” Powell says.

Looking south, you can see Dixon Branch on the left and Plano Road. You notice there are no homes, and the property is just not really very pretty.

You see the homes have begun popping up. Actually, I grew up in the house that’s just out of the picture. You see the brand new swimming pool, the tennis courts, the parking lot. There’s Northwest Highway and Plano Road.

Delicious Healthy

Armando Guerrero had Dallas code compliance staffers scratching their heads when he applied for a permit to open Bicycle Café, a health-food restaurant that also has lockers, a changing room and bike storage. “The city couldn’t understand. They said, ‘You want bicycles inside a restaurant?’ ” Guerrero, a tri-athlete himself, opened the café in February, serving healthy salads, tacos, breakfast and Cuvee coffee. “This is what I would like to see in a café,” he says. “It’s healthy because of the grains we use. It’s light but gives you lots of energy. No one wants to eat a big steak before going for a ride.” Popular dishes include the quinoa bowl, which comes with a choice of meat, cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, peppers and pineapple with citrus vinaigrette. “The good thing about our salads is that we make the dressings from scratch,” manager Job Martinez says. Plus, almost everything on the menu can be vegan-friendly.

Haak Green Label Blanc du Bois ($15) Texas

This month marks the fourth annual DrinkLocalWine conference, which is being held in Denver and focusing on Colorado wine. We held the first DLW event, featuring Texas wine, in Dallas four years ago, and no one knew what would happen next.

What has happened is that local wine has grown almost exponentially since then, and Texas has been in the forefront of that growth. The state has 225 wineries, about three times as many as just 10 years ago (and the number of wineries in the states that aren’t California, Oregon and Washington has increased by almost one-half since 2005). Local wine has become more a part of the local food movement than ever before; U.S. chefs, according to a National Restaurant Association survey, pointed to local wine as a top-10 menu trend for two consecutive years.

And quality is better than ever before. A Texas viognier won a gold medal at the prestigious San Francisco Chronicle wine competition this year, and the state’s entries turned in one of their best ever showings at the annual Dallas Morning News-TexSom competition.

In fact, one of the few remaining obstacles facing Texas wine is that too many consumers know it’s not any good — even though they’ve never tasted it. So, this month, some Texas wines to try, especially if you’ve never tried any before:

Don’t worry if you haven’t heard of this grape; it makes fine wine anyway. Look for citrus flavors and a crisp, clean finish — this is a bone-dry white that pairs with grilled and boiled seafood.

This red blend features tempranillo, a Spanish grape that looks like it will do quite well in Texas. It’s a little funky on the aroma, which is a good thing, and has cherry fruit. It’s a beef and lamb wine.

Not the best name in the world, but a red blend made with more familiar grapes like merlot from a small Hill Country producer that gets good reviews. It’s rich and full, and makes a nice gift for red wine drinkers.

JEFF SIEGEL’S WEEKLY WINE REVIEWS appear every Wednesday on lakehighlands.advocatemag.com

with your wine

Basic vegetable soup

This isn’t much more difficult than opening a can, and it tastes so much better. The ingredients are just suggestions; other than the leek, which gives amazing flavor, you can use pretty much anything in the refrigerator, including chopped mushrooms, shredded cabbage and torn lettuce leaves. Serve with the Texas wine of your choice — a light red or white would do the trick.

Grocery List

6 c water

1 large leek, cleaned and trimmed, and cut into 1-inch pieces

2 onions, chopped

2 medium carrots, diced

Directions

1 stalk celery, diced

1 bell pepper, diced

1/2 c small pasta, such as thin soup noodles

salt and pepper to taste

1 bay leaf

1. Add the water and vegetables, salt, pepper and bay leaf, and bring to a boil. Cover and simmer for 20 minutes or so, until the leek is tender.

2. Bring to a boil, add the noodles and cook until the noodles are tender.

3. Remove the bay leaf, correct seasoning and serve.

This creekside paradise parades its owners’ personalities

The corner lot catches the eye of passersby. a sprawling backyard replete with tropical plants, Zen monuments and goldfish swimming in a sparkling pond flanks the forest and creek that runs through a tuckedaway north lake highlands neighborhood. the home’s 1,000-square-foot outdoor deck, or the spacious kitchen and living area just inside, frequently is populated with party guests.

Mark Williamson and bob smith love to entertain. they treasure travel, art and music, too, so they built a house most conducive to a life filled with these things. their Mediterranean-style abode is airy and bursting with natural light in all the right places. Gracious curves and high, individually decorated ceilings lend the home a luxurious feel, while playful art, warm colors and wafting pop music puts visitors promptly at ease.

about 15 years ago, the two looked at several Dallas homes but never quite found one that excited them. While shopping, they noticed this empty creekside lot for sale. the owner happened to live right in the neighborhood, so they met quickly and struck a deal after which Williamson and smith hit the home design section of a nearby bookstore.

“We really got our initial ideas for the house through looking at hundreds of architecture, design and decorating books,” Williamson says. observations from their travels also drove much of the design. art accumulated from near and far now occupies the walls, tables and ceilings.

LEFT This custom-made iron front door was designed and installed with the help of Jenny Sandlin and her northeast Dallas based company, Elegante Iron. The doors were constructed in Monterrey and each side weighs 600 pounds. The homeowners say the iron design appealed to them because its swirls complement their home’s curves.

LEFT On entering the Williamson-Smith home, the owners’ love of music, art and color is evident. “Orange is the new black,” Smith jokes. The Yamaha piano receives frequent attention from Williamson, and Smith sings along. Above, a severely texturized canvas by Florida-based artist Justin Gaffrey begs attention. The homeowners discovered Gaffrey, a well-known pastry chef and restaurateur turned painter, while vacationing in Seaside. A Venetian-mask motif — vivid hand painted pieces with jutting feathers and metallic accents —

hovers over double patio doors. The décor has developed over the years, Williamson says. “It’s not exactly a style, but a mix of things we fall in love with.” The raised ceilings, flowing natural light, meaningful adornments and open spaces are consistent throughout the home.

RIGHT Another Justin Gaffrey piece — puffed-out sunflowers in muted yellows and greens hangs above the master bed. A large glass door in this bedroom opens to the expansive patio and sweeping tropical backyard.

LEFT “Rub her for good luck,” Smith says of the voluptuous nymph whose body creates the overreaching arch of this stained glass Tiffany-style table lamp. It accents the main living room, which is openly adjacent to the kitchen, the place where guests most frequently gather.

RIGHT It’s not often that one sees such care assigned to ceilings. Throughout the home, detailed design elements reach upper borders and ceilings. In this case, near the front door, a cloud of turquoise and coral, originally meant as a wall display, is affixed to the ceiling and serves as the base for a hanging chandelier.

RIGHT Arguably the highlight of this home is its backyard. Green almost year-round, the lush grass spreads from a spacious deck to a fence that lines the trickling creek. Years ago, the homeowners had to build a retaining wall along the creek to “keep their yard from falling into the water,” they say. A collection of tropical flora, usually placed strategically among the yard’s myriad mature trees and bushes, is put in a portable greenhouse for safe keeping during unseasonable weather. A dozen goldfish swim in a clear garden pond as oriental gods watch over them.

Alive and kicking 50 years of Highlandette history

Oh, how things have changed in the past 50 years. But some entities, such as the Lake Highlands High School Highlandettes, are so rooted in tradition that they ever remain a source of neighborhood pride and nostalgia.

The Highlandettes celebrate 50 years this month with a 50th Anniversary Revue in the Lake Highlands Auditorium, April 20 and 21 at 7:30 p.m. Alumni receptions are Saturday night, and an alumni tea will be held Saturday afternoon. Visit highlandettes.com for tickets and details.

Meanwhile, peruse 50 facts and highlights from the Highlandettes’ 50-year history:

36 lakehighlands.advocatemag.com April 2012

A line of 44 high-kicking Highlandettes performed at Lake Highlands High School’s first-ever football game in September 1961, held at a Greenville Avenue stadium.

The 2011-2012 line includes 48 girls, including six officers.

They’ve tried different-sized teams. The longest line comprised 66 girls in 1974.

The smallest was in 2006 with just 26 .

The original traditional uniform included a longsleeved field jacket, a buttonon LH shield, a pressed circle skirt, top hat with elastic band, bloomers, white gloves and white boots. The 1980s version of the round skirt had to be starched each week. It took a half bottle of liquid starch and two days to dry. That was retired after the 1996 homecoming game.

Frances Davenport, who worked as a counselor at the high school, is credited with many of the Highlandette traditions.

She credited Kilgore Rangerettes founder Gussie Nell Davis with inspiring her.

1969-72 Highlandette member Kathy Sutton Crawford told the Dallas Morning News in 2002 that “if (Davenport) had been head football coach, we’d have gone to state every year.”>>

Achieving a perfect high kick requires a lot of stretching. The girls used to be told to stand in a doorframe and kick until their foot hit the top.

They traveled for the first time, with the LHHS band, in 1964 to march in the Fiesta Parade. The trip became an annual tradition through 1983.

In order to travel, the team needed to raise its own funds. The first regular fundraiser was a Christmas bazaar featuring crafts made by Highlandette moms, held yearly at Mitchell’s Department Store in White Rock Shopping Center. These days, it’s the annual garage sale that brings in the bucks.

In 1972 they sold greeting cards to buy umbrellas that they used as props.

They first traveled out of state to a New Orleans Mardi Gras parade in 1970.

Since, they’ve been in parades in New York City, San Diego, Hawaii, Disneyland, and this year performed over spring break on a Caribbean Cruise.

In the 1970s a Highlandette mom started making dolls that resemble the ’Dettes to sell at the bazaar. It caught on, and by the ’80s every team member’s mom was making a doll that resembled her daughter. The tradition lives today.

38 lakehighlands.advocatemag.com April 2012

The dances in the old days were strictly prop, kick or military, but today the Highlandettes incorporate jazz, tap and hip hop routines.

“The Yellow Rose of Texas” dance, first performed by Highlandettes in the ’80s, is the last dance at every “Red/White” game.

In 1965, moms made all the costumes for the annual Spring Show, and the girls sang and acted out skits between numbers.

Some of the girls change costumes 14 times during the modern Spring Show.

In 1982, the first male performers, dubbed The Highlandudes, appeared in the Spring Show. They are now a regular highlight.

Several Highlandettes went on to become Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders — Kim Stevens, Judy London, Dawn Alston, Michelle Parma and Carrie Chapman.

The aforementioned Michelle Parma also starred on MTV’s reality show “Road Rules” before she was killed in a 2002 car crash.

The 1980 team was featured in a national TV commercial for Trailway Bus Lines.

In the 1960s and 1970s, the girls decorated football players’ houses and made them cakes for homecoming.

Highlandettes have performed at tons of Dallas Cowboy games, SMU games, and Cotton Bowl parades and games.

In the 1960s, the Highlandettes were the official drill team of the Dallas Chaparrals ABA basketball team.

“Stand routines” are the movements the team does along with the band at football games. “Hey Baby” is a crowd and team favorite, and the LH Fight Song is performed each time the team scores a touchdown.

In 1988 the seniors danced to “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” at the senior pep rally, and the music stopped early into the routine. The girls famously danced to the end, shouting out counts.

In 1982 the LH Wildcats won state in football, and the Highlandettes performed a Christmas routine to “Jingle Bell Rock” using chairs that spelled out “Merry Christmas” while wearing Santa Hats.

In the 1984 Spring Show, there were so many injured team members that an impromptu fashion show was added to allow the injured girls to participate. Some walked out on crutches.

In 1993 the team added sophomores. Previously the line was just juniors and seniors.

The 50th and current line has many experienced dancers. The team won 18 awards at competition this year and took 24 soloists.

Maybelline #645 Red Revival is the official lipstick of the Highlandettes.

New Highlandettes must learn to curl their hair in ringlets that will hold for football games and performances.

“Family Time” is when the girls compliment and encourage each other. It is held at the end of each practice.

The Bob and Susie Dance is a recent football halftime show tradition in which the girls dance with their dads — the practices are a lot of fun, and the crowd loves to see the men dance, parents say.

The team always wears matching clothing when practicing or appearing in public. In the 1980s the girls came in sponge rollers and had to make sure the curlers stayed in while they danced, otherwise the entire team would lose their “curler privileges.”

The girls may not wear their uniform unless they are performing, and it must always be worn with all pieces. They are not allowed to eat in it unless the whole team is given permission. (This was not always true. In the 1970s, Kip’s Big Boy was the afterfootball-game hangout, and the girls went in uniform with their dates.)

Wanting to walk, talk and smile

A promising research study offers hope to families of children with a rare syndrome, but it is going to be expensive

When Amy and Jason Moore left the hospital with their son, Wyatt, everything was, according to medical professionals, normal. But as Wyatt’s parents anticipated the usual baby milestones — rolling over, sitting up, walking — which never happened, they knew something was wrong, Jason says.

Doctors ran a battery of tests, which came back normal. Genetic screenings and more screenings turned up nothing, until the last one, which revealed that Wyatt had a rare form of Down Syndrome called MECP2 Du-

plication Syndrome, a crippling neurological disorder that occurs almost exclusively in boys.

The syndrome is so rare that it wasn’t until 2005 that doctors had a test for it. The Moores, who also have a 7-year-old named Max, were at first “sad, then shocked and then puzzled,” Jason says. Hypotonia (low muscle tone), developmental delay, mental retardation, limited or absent speech, spasticity, involuntary movements of hands, teeth grinding, recurrent respiratory infec-

46 lakehighlands.advocatemag.com April 2012

tions and epilepsy are some of the symptoms MECP2 patients endure. But today, dealing with Wyatt’s condition is routine.

“We are not bummed out every day. We do what we need to do and Wyatt is Wyatt,” he says.

The blue-eyed child can’t smile, he has never spoken and he has lost the ability to walk, but he does have a special bike that he rides with the help of his mom and dad. He likes to swing and be outdoors; they can read his moods.

“He swings his arms when he is happy, and he lets us know when he needs something,” Jason says.

Despite the rarity of the syndrome, the Moores discovered a second Lake Highlands boy who has MECP2.

“Wyatt’s physical therapist told us about a family near us who has a 20-year-old with the same symptoms as Wyatt,” Jason says.

Amy went to visit them, he says, and when they learned there was another boy in the neighborhood with MECP2, they couldn’t believe it.

The two families are supportive of one another, Jason says, and families from around the country, in fact, comfort each other through a website, Facebook and conferences at which they have met in person.

And now, they have hope that things could improve for Wyatt and others with MECP2. A renowned neurological disease specialist in Houston, Dr. Huda Zoghbi, will head a project to study and hopefully reverse the symptoms of MECP2. Parents of the 200 children diagnosed with MECP2 are joining to raise the $80,000 needed to launch the experiment. The entire project will cost $236,000 over three years. In order to start

the study by spring 2012, the 200 families have set a goal of raising $401 each, by April 1. They call it the 401 Project.

Jason is optimistic about the proposed experiment and says he’s not sure it will directly help Wyatt, because experiments like this take time, but he is hopeful that it will, and that it will also help other boys.

Amy is imploring the help of the community in raising the needed funds to kick off the project. Learn more about an upcoming fundraiser for Wyatt on p. 15, and anyone can donate any amount online at 401Project.com.

“If anyone can help in any way, we would greatly appreciate it,” she says. “My sweet boy deserves the best. This syndrome is not fair to him. I want his words. I want his steps. At the least, more answers, more ways to quiet the seizures, more hope.”

The e as T er goose

What images come to mind when you think of God?

The dove is one of the most common symbols in nature that points to the nature of God. It stands for the Holy Spirit in much Christian iconography.

After the cataclysmic flood that destroyed the known world, Noah released a dove from the ark that finally came back with an olive leaf indicating that the waters were receding and the earth was being renewed. The dove and the olive branch have become perpetual symbols of peace. A dove descended from the heavens and lighted upon Jesus at his baptism, picturing the peace of God resting upon him.

It’s a lovely image — the gentle dove. Doves never hurt anyone. Doves coo. What’s threatening about that?

But the Holy Spirit is hardly benign. The peace of God that the dove image conveys is only part of the story. Like a mother who can comfort and nurture but also defend her offspring with terrifying fury, God never rests in working to bring rest to all creation.

The promised peace of God is a deep rest, however. The Hebrew word shalom and the Arabic salaam capture the nature of this peace. They indicate an environment of comprehensive justice, not just a lack of conflict.

“No justice, no peace” is the slogan of all revolutionaries as they storm palaces that house oppressive regimes. Whether King George III of Britain, or Muammar Gaddafi of Libya, or Bashar al-Assad of Syria to name just a few — dictators love to play the peace card when people rise up and demand freedom and justice. They cry “law and order” and condemn protestors as rabble-rousers and troublemakers. But their brand of peace falls short of God’s design for a world in which right relationships of every kind rule the day.

Jewish and Christian holy days, during the month of April this year, point to God’s being a peacemaker more than a peacekeeper. Passover recalls God’s untiring commitment to liberation from all kinds of slavery. The exodus of the children of Israel from their forced labor under the harsh hand of the pharaoh in Egypt tells us that God is never content just to bless regimes that keep the peace by keeping the just aspirations of their people repressed. Easter proves that God will not tolerate forever the final oppressive repressor — Death. Even the grave can’t keep down the hopes of people for life and freedom. God’s raising of Jesus tells us that no power can match God’s power to give life. No cemetery can grant perpetual peace.

Celtic Christians have long looked to the wild goose as a more fitting symbol of the Holy Spirit. The goose suggests a spirit of dangerous adventure more than boring serenity.

Mark Batterson, the author of “Wild Goose Chase,” puts it this way: “Wild geese are regarded as disturbing nuisances by some, creating noise at moments that are often inconvenient, even pests to be shot. And at another level they convey a sense of foolishness, which is how God’s upside-down kingdom values appear to the world. While their gait is awkward, in flight the wild goose displays grace and beauty. He exemplifies an outrageous wildness as his great wings beat with exceptional power implying the capacity to achieve the apparently impossible. Put all this together and the wild goose image resonates deeply within us. … The God of the Bible is wild and free, safe but not tame, unfathomable, uncontainable, unpredictable, and yet able to be known intimately.”

That’s the kind of God that can bring real and lasting peace to creation, a peace that surpasses human understanding.

The Office of Cultural Affairs has recommended artist Brower Hatcher to design a $272,000 sculpture on Garland Road near the White Rock spillway. Funding for the sculpture is coming from the city water department, and the parks department selected the site for it. The White Rock Lake Centennial celebration committee was consulted in the planning, as the sculpture is intended to represent the 100th anniversary of the lake. The sculpture would sit atop a base, with a slender aluminum structure about 24 feet tall, which ends in three wave-like tiers. The base would be covered in tiles superimposed with historical images of White Rock Lake. The city council must ultimately approve the design. The cultural affairs office hopes to get the proposal approved this spring.

The city reports that it earned $186,450 from the $15 garage sale permit fee residents have been required to pay during the past fiscal year. According to the city briefing, more than 12,430 permits were issued, and the city also dished out 720 violation notices and 17 criminal citations.

Richardson ISD Clothes Closet is accepting donations of gently used prom dresses in all sizes and lengths, preferably those that are in style, as well as shoes, purses, jewelry and other accessories. For the past several years, girls from all over the district have been able to come into the Clothes Closet and shop for everything they need for the big night. Quesa-D-Ya’s to open near Lake Highlands

According to Quesa-D-Ya’s founder and president Paul Oltmann, the quesadilla delivery chain with locations on Lower Greenville and in Coppell has a Lake Highlands-area franchise location in the works. A location has not yet been chosen, but Oltmann says the Garland-Buckner and the Easton-Northwest Highway intersections are possible contenders.

Janie Christy merges with Dallas Ballet Center

Janie Christy of Lake Highlands’

Janie Christy School of Dance is joining the staff at Dallas Ballet Center The center will merge the classes, schedule and students from Christy’s studio with its own starting this fall. “When faced with the decision to renew my lease at 9090 Skillman, I decided to focus on finding more time for family, and relinquish the responsibilities of studio ownership,” Christy says, adding that joining the Dallas Ballet Center staff allows her to “continue my 19-year tradition of sharing my love of dance with children.”

White Rock Coffee receives ‘KRUPS Best Brew Award’

KRUPS USA, known for its coffee and espresso machines, chose the Lake Highlands-based coffee shop as the winner of its 2012 Dallas award for the second year in a row. The annual contest recognizes the best coffee shops across the nation, and winners are selected by a public vote through the KRUPS Facebook page.

LH grad

starts baking business

Lake Highlands High School 2004 alumna Christie Berry McCabe has launched a new business called Daily Dose of Sweet. McCabe learned to bake at home with her mom, Barbara, and her three sisters, all Lake Highlands grads (Katie, 2000; Natalie, 2006; and Martie, 2012). “When we were little, we would go to my grandma’s house before Thanksgiving, and all the girls would bake the desserts,” McCabe says. “Then, when I went to college [she, like the rest of the Berry girls, are proud Baylor Bears], I started baking on my own for friends and roommates. When I graduated, I discovered the world of baking blogs, and I was hooked. Since then, I haven’t stopped baking and testing out my own recipes.” McCabe is starting small, offering birthday cakes and party treats made after school and on weekends for friends and folks who hear by word of mouth. She also bakes cupcakes and wedding sweets, and says her favorite things to bake, and her best sellers, are her decorated sugar cookies. McCabe is married to LHHS 2005 grad Taylor McCabe, and he takes the photos for her baking blog.

The tribute was named this year for the legendary industry pioneer and is given annually by the MetroTex Association of Realtors to a member of the real estate industry for his or her role in building North Texas communities. Timmerman works at Nathan Grace Real Estate and was recognized for co-chairing the Chi Omega Christmas Market for the past two years. THEY EVEN SNATCHED HIS FRIEND’S AGGIE RING.

The Victim: Darren Schultz

The Crime: Burglary

Date: Wednesday, Feb. 22

Time: Between 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Location: 9600 block of Park

Highlands

Darren Schultz is a proud Longhorn. His roommate is an old friend from high school — and he’s an Aggie. You can imagine the good-natured ribbing that goes back and forth between the two. And for Aggies, the class ring is a prized possession.

Unfortunately, a recent break-in resulted in Schultz’s friend losing his cherished ring to a burglar.

“He wears it all the time,” Schultz says. “He just didn’t that day. He left it on his dresser.”

The burglar entered the home the hard way, smashing through the front door and leaving pieces of splintered wood on the floor. And the ring wasn’t all this thief made off with — the haul included two TVs, two watches, and a pistol and ammunition.

Dallas Police Sgt. Keitric Jones of the Northeast Patrol Division saysthat securing a door with two or more deadbolts often helps prevent door break-ins, but the strength of the doorframe also must be considered.

For personal property, Jones recommends keeping records ofvaluables, including the serial number, make and model, to help police. He offers some simple advice on keeping these types of records.

“Maintaining records of this is as easy as taking pictures of the item or maintaining an excel spreadsheet and emailing it to yourself so if something happens to your computer, you will still have access to it,” Jones says.

Who’s excited about ne W apartments?

If you head south on the White Rock hike-and-bike trail from Lake Highlands toward White Rock Lake, you’ll reach the trail’s intersection with Northwest Highway, where the most prominent landmark is Duncan’s Liquor store on West Lawther. You might not notice it if you didn’t have to stop for the red light before crossing the highway. You might not question whether it’s the best use for the land.

Did you ever wish there were 350 apartment units there instead?

If not, that’s the difference between people like you and me, as opposed

catemag.com in February, it generated 68 responses from LH readers.

The majority of comments were in line with the NIMBY (not-in-my-backyard) reaction that we in Lake Highlands have perfected in recent decades, with good reason. Past mistakes have taught us to examine all new apartment development with a gimlet eye. If nothing else, citizen stakeholders in LH are involved and active.

But NIMBY is not the only song in our repertoire. Some comments indicate that a few LH residents are willing to envision a project that could be a win/ win for the developers and the surrounding neighbors. It’s not such a far leap to imagine that DART access combined with green belt and bike trail proximity could make this project the one that will finally attract developers’ dream tenants — the young urban employed.

out that the property is part of a flood plain. Tarpley says this will require a flood-plain study to determine what portion of the property falls in the flood plain, and what areas the developer might be able to re-claim by shoring up.

Another red flag may be the history of the developer. Winston Capital owned Northwest Terrace at Northwest Highway near Plano Road, a complex plagued by crime and bad management until it was razed in 2006. These memories are fresh enough that we should demand specifics about how the new complex will be managed. Will it be like Northwest Terrace (bad) or Winston Capital’s The Village apartments in midtown (good)? At The Village, updates and maintenance are built into the management plan.

If it turns out to be Village-like, some neighbors are fully on board.

to developers. A firm called Winston Capital has applied for a zoning change at that corner, from single family/retail to multi-family, with plans to build a high-density apartment complex to take advantage of the adjacent White Rock DART Station and proximity to the trail. When Advocate editor Christina Hughes Babb posted this news on advo-

Gloria Tarpley, the Dallas plan commissioner for District 9, which includes this intersection, says she hasn’t reached a decision on whether to recommend the zoning change, and won’t make a decision until she sees more specifics.

“The property is very steep in slope, and narrows down quickly. The proposal is creative and could be very good for a difficult piece of land,” Tarpley says.

She also emphasizes that city planners and District 9 Councilman Sheffie Kadane will listen to community input at a plan commission public hearing at City Hall, expected to take place in April.

More than one commenter pointed

“This is an under-utilized piece of property and this is one of the best uses for it,” says advocatemag.com commenter Eric Clay. “All that disposable income only a bike ride or short train trip away [from the future LH Town Center] has to be good.”

Adds R. Croysdale: “We in the loop need to get used to the idea that Dallas will continue to get denser, that new single-family housing is in the past, and that new multifamily should not always be judged by the rundown messes that we see elsewhere in Lake Highlands.”

Perhaps, but developers with Winston Capital’s history have earned our scrutiny if they want to build near our well-traveled bike path and greenbelt.
