Summer daze

Enjoy the lazy, hazy days while they last

Summer is a season primarily defined by lack of school.

We’ve all been there at one time or another — there’s the school year, and then there’s summer. And summer was a time we looked forward to because it promised minimal responsibility, which is an asset unappreciated until it’s too late.

Once we start working year-round jobs, summer seems to lose its significance. The days of

Yes! Research by the Department of Energy shows you can SAVE 10% ON YOUR COOLING COSTS by setting your thermostat back 10% to 15% for eight hours a day. It’s hard, with our busy schedules, to remember to raise the thermostat setting when we leave the house in the morning. That’s where the programmable thermostat comes in. Once it’s set up, it will operate by your schedule. Your home will be as comfortable when you come home as it was when you left it.

While you’re gone, you won’t be over-cooling an empty house, and that will definitely save you money.

wistfully staring at a ticking clock don’t disappear, but no matter how many times we urge the clock along during an otherwise bleary day, and no matter how nice of a guy or gal the boss really is, we know we won’t be enjoying a three-month break in the middle of the year.

If you happen to have kids, particularly kids now at home after grinding through the school year, it doesn’t take long — two or three hours perhaps — to start wondering exactly when summer will be over and what day school begins again.

That feeling is predictable, and it’s understandable, and it’s inevitable. We don’t appreciate summer when it’s ours, and we look forward to it most when it’s gone.

My early, and best, summers were unplanned. My parents didn’t worry much about where I was or what I was doing — they knew I would be with friends or reading or playing baseball.

Please proofread carefully: pay attention to spelling, grammar, phone numbers and design. Color proofs: because of the difference in equipment and conditions between the color proofing and the pressroom operations, a reasonable variation in color between color proofs and the completed job shall constitute an acceptable delivery.

Aimless summers don’t happen much anymore, and they certainly don’t happen much around here. Urban parents, grandparents and caregivers plan children’s days like military exercises, with wake-up times dictated by camps and babysitters and programs and work schedules. And heaven forbid that a kid is left to wander from house to house looking for friends — what’s the point in visiting someone when you can simply text “yo” and start a 90-minute monosyllabic conversation from the comfort of your bed?

our church serves up for free. The woman doing the writing is Melora Hirschmann from Nebraska; I don’t know her, have never talked with her and couldn’t pick her out of an icecream truck lineup.

“My mother is in the last stages of her battle with cancer. Each day that I have with her is

During the month of June, all Advocate readers will receive 15% off programmable thermostat installation.** Call for details and be sure to ask about the new Trane Comfort Link Thermostat. This model can be programmed from your smart phone and links to other smart home products.

True, texting is a form of aimless, summerlike self-entertainment, but I haven’t seen much opportunity for self-enrichment in the process. And the very core of texting is imparting thought in small chunks rather than spending larger chunks of time interacting personally with each other.

I speak as both a victim and an accomplice in all of the above, and I wish there was something I could tell myself to ease this burden and return to the days when summer simply allowed us to unwind and reload.

Instead, I’ll leave you with something I read recently in a daily devotional book that

a gift from God. Some days are better than others, and sometimes in beautiful moments, we connect and have a great talk. After these times, I am glad that I was there, sitting with her and caring for her.”

Parents and children and the rest of us will all be gone soon enough, just as the passing years make summer relatively meaningless. And thanks to our own restlessness, there’s rarely enough time, even during the summer, to enjoy the day with someone we love.

But more than likely, summer is one of the only times we still have to do something like that.

Class of 2011 standouts

I just finished reading your “test of strength” feature story in the Advocate (May 2011), and it is really, really good. It seems like every year, the students that are selected for this feature are even more inspirational than the previous year’s group. thanks for doing this story each year. I

know from my long experience at lake Highlands High school that there are many wonderful students there who come from every background imaginable, but the general public isn’t aware of the significant obstacles some of them have to overcome to graduate from high school. Great job, once again!

Congratulationson yourarticle about the six Lake Highlands High School students who have overcome so much and are now headed to college. I am an AVID tutor, and I know all six. They are truly wonderful, inspirational people, and you told their stories beautifully and respectfully.

What a great story! Thanks for highlighting some inspiring young adults as they approach graduation and the beginning of the next part of their lives. Whether readers are young or old, nobody can argue with the value of one’s hard work and desire to achieve their goals. When our local news often has the not so good, the bad and the ugly as their headlines, it is refreshing to read a story with a positive, uplifting message, particularly about teens in our own neighborhood.

I am writing because I find Jeff Siegel’s response to the question: “Why is restaurant wine so much more expensive than wine in stores?” in the May 2011 Advocate irresponsible. First of all, by omission, that response implies that all restaurants mark their wines up three times. That is inaccurate. I am part of a large group of restaurateurs that marks wine up at barely twice what I pay, which may still seem expensive, but the costs involved in running a restaurant and serving wine appropriately are much higher than the costs associated with the sale of wine for the average retailer. Additionally, I’m certain you are not aware that a large number of wines are highly allocated and available for on-premise sale only; therefore, those wines command a higher price. —GilbErt Garza (ChEf and ownEr, SuzE)

This weekend I bought and enjoyed a bottle of this Crianza that you recommended. Had it with grilled shrimp. I definitely got a distinct cherry tone on my first couple of sips. I would buy this wine again. —CitizEn K anE

a trader Joe’s in lh?

05.09.11

When we published a February story about the future of retail in Dallas, real estate experts said it would be only a matter of time before Trader Joe’s entered the market. Now we know for certain that the eclectic grocer is moving to North Texas. The question is: Where? The Lake Highlands Town Center, perhaps? It’s not out of the question. Mike Geisler of Venture Commercial tells us he spoke to Jud Pankey and other Prescott Realty executives last week, and “there will be a grocer on that site I think they have three or four choices now.” — KERI

New Home Construction Process

Part 1: Choosing and Working with a Builder

In real estate, there’s nothing more satisfying than picking a lot, choosing a floor plan, customizing your interior, and seeing it all come together. If you’re considering custom home construction, here are a few tips to help with the major decisions along the way.

Choosing a Builder

Before you pick up the phone, these questions will help determine your choice of builder: What degree of handholding through the sales and construction processes do you prefer? How much input would you like in the design, construction, and materials of your home? Which builders offer the most experience, skill, quality and service in your price range? And above all else, which builders do you believe will be there for you in the future?

Choosing a Lot

The location of your lot determines everything from your property tax rate to the schools and amenities available to you. But choosing a lot involves more than picking a location. You must also consider the exposure of your home on each lot you consider to sunlight and wind, and their effects on your utility bills. You’ll want to consider lot size too, and its effects on what you can do with the property, home value, and property taxes.

Closing Date

Getting a firm closing date, or a close estimate will help you to finalize your mortgage, schedule movers,

plan utility start dates, and arrange your change of address with the post office. Because there are so many contingencies in new home construction, you’ll need a good closing date estimate. Time is money, so you should be confident in your builder’s ability to meet the date.

Planning the Design

When you meet with the builder to discuss your floor plan, you’ll be asked about your lifestyle. Do you prefer intimate or open spaces? Do you enjoy cooking, exercise, and in-home entertainment? Do you work from home? Do your children need a play area? It pays to think about these questions as early as possible.

Choosing Interior Styles and Materials

Once you finalize your contract with a builder, you will set an appointment to meet with a designer to choose your interior materials. If a wide selection is important to you, or if you have specific ideas in mind, talk to builders about your options. The earlier you begin to put together your preferences for cabinets, flooring, counters, and wall treatments, the more likely you are to love the end result.

We would be delighted to earn your consideration as you choose a builder. We have been building homes in your neighborhood through the highs and lows of our economy, and you can count on Bella Vista to be here for many years to come.

Lake Highlands resident Cameron e rnst, 22, is a musician on a mission. In high school, he started writing music — fluffy love-song type stuff, he tells us — but his college studies focused on acting and theater. When he entered the postuniversity world, he rediscovered his passion for making music. He started writing and recording, only this time with more maturity, selflessness and purpose. He recently joined the “Love is Louder” movement through which he travels to schools and youth groups to spread his inspiring message aimed at drowning out violence, hate and bullying.

Where are you from?

I live in Lake Highlands now, but I grew up in Wichita, Kan.

Your music is driven by a cause.

Was this always the case?

Not really. When I was a teenager, I wrote sappy love songs. It wasn’t until I started caring more about causes, such as Invisible Children, an organization [that aims at protecting children in war-torn Uganda] I became involved with during college, that I began writing with a deeper meaning.

Did you always know you’d be a musician?

Actually, I was into acting and drama. At University of Southern California I studied acting and musical theater with aspirations of making it in Hollywood. TV is different that theater and music, though, and as I worked

a little, I realized I missed the audience. The arrows started pointing in a different direction — music. Unfortunately, I knew nothing about producing music or recording, so I did an internship at Warner Bros. Records and learned all I could. Then I just somehow felt drawn to Dallas, which is also where my family lives.

ANDTHATISWHEN YOUBEGAN SEEING A LARGER MISSION IN YOUR MUSIC?

Even before then I had a passion for writing music about causes I cared about. As a senior at USC, another student and I recorded the song “Legacy”, which was inspired by the Invisible Children movement mentioned earlier. Recently, following much publicity about student suicides provoked by bullying, I read about the “Love is Louder” movement. I recorded a song by the same name in order to contribute to the effort. That time in particular, the song just seemed to come out.

TELL US MOREABOUTTHE “LOVE IS LOUDER” MOVEMENT.

It’s a multimedia effort started by actress Brittany Snow [“Gossip Girl”] to rally love and hope and prevent bullying, depression, shame or suicide. But it’s not exactly an antibullying campaign because bullying is not the focus. The focus is on love and creating a positive environment. It goes for not just kids but for everyone. Bullying and hatred can happen in the adult workplace, too.

WHAT EXACTLY IS YOURROLE INTHE MOVEMENT NOW?

I go to schools — in fact, I recently went to my old high school — to address students. I perform the song, which has the type of pop style they can relate to, and then I share my experiences with them, tell them about the movement. I have been to several of the area Young Life groups, including at Lake Highlands, JJ Pearce and Berkner high schools, and hope to visit more schools in Richardson ISD during the next school year.

DID YOU HAVEAN EXPERIENCE WITH BEING BULLIEDIN SCHOOL?

I was a drama kid, so I was picked on some. What I share with the students today, though, is mostly about how I stayed positive and successful through love and service while I was in school — being on the student council, for example, and working at the school newspaper. All the little things I did helped me to surround myself with positivity. The idea of caring for and loving your classmates is an important message for both bullies and those being bullied.

IS YOUR MESSAGE RELIGIOUS?

No — not necessarily. Personally, I am a Christian, but this is message is not denominational, but purely about love and its power to create a better world. —CHRISTINA

vive la France

Uphill climbs, heavy winds and Texas summer heat won’t hold this 60-something back. Lake Highlands’ Zoltan (please call him “Z”) Zsohar rides most mornings preparing for the June 2011 National Senior Games in Houston where he will race the 5- and 10-kilometer time trials and a 20- and 40-kilometer road race. But that’s just a precursor the really exciting part: The following month, the avid cyclist is off to tackle the Tour de France. OK, so he’s not actually racing in the world’s most famous bicycling event, but he will be there during the final two weeks of the 21-day tour. “This is something I’ve dreamed of doing since I started riding,” Zsohar says. “A bucket list item, you could say.” Post college, Zsohar began running to knock off a few pounds and improve his health. He eventually ran 10 marathons (and lost 50 pounds), but gradually decided that riding in the Texas summer was far more enjoyable than running — and he was good at it, too. His wife, Shirley, a former Lake Highlands High School teacher, won’t join Z on his European vacation because she’s not an experienced cyclist, but she encouraged her husband to follow his heart. He will join a tour group just outside the Pyrenees Mountains. Each day he and his group will ride 20-60 miles along oftenchallenging mountainous terrain, and at least once a day, they will stop to watch the professionals pass. “I am very excited. I even splurged and got a seat at the finish podium. It cost extra, but it will be worth it.” On the topic of cost (which Z says he wishes we hadn’t asked about), it can run as much as $10,000, all told, to mark this item off your bucket list. How does his better half feel about the expense? “She’s got a pricey hobby of her own, quilting, so we just don’t discuss the expenses of either,” he says through a smile. “We only have ourselves to support these days. Our kids are on their own, so why not?”

Chill out

i t’s worth visiting Bistro B, located on the outskirts of Lake Highlands, for its wide array of Vietnamese dishes in a habitually festive atmosphere. The real treat here, however, is the restaurant’s seemingly endless selection of vivid, inventive and unique drinks and desserts — coffees, teas, smoothies, ice cream shakes, shaved ice, pudding, tapioca and gelatins galore. The downside is that one can’t possibly taste it all in one visit. But we can try. Consider the refreshing salted-lemon or pickled plum sodas, or passion fruit or durian fruit juices. Health conscious customers enjoy pennywort juice, a cousin to wheatgrass that boasts anti-aging properties, or the creamy (vegan) ice tamarind with peanut. Bistro B has more than 25 smoothie flavors from avocado to soursop alongside more traditional concoctions including kiwi banana and orange vanilla. For dessert, try a banana egg rolls ice cream or a colored jelly with coconut milk shaved ice. All of the drinks and desserts run less than $4, and most are less than $3, so try something adventurous. —Christina hughes

pink rosés

CHARLESAND CHARLESROSÉ ($10) WASHINGTON>

Welcome to the ninth annual Advocate rosé column, where our motto is: If it’s summer and you have $10, you can buy good rosé — and sometimes even get change back.

Surprisingly, despite the weak dollar and the passage of all that time, that price point hasn’t changed in the last decade. There are still dozens of terrific rosés that cost $10 or less from all over the world. The one thing that has changed? The quality of rosé keeps getting better, and it’s unusual to find a poorly made rosé (something that wasn’t necessarily true 10 years ago).

What you need to know about rosé:

(or white merlot or whatever); rosés are pink wines made with red grapes, and they aren’t sweet. Why are they pink? Because the red grape skins are left in the fermenting grape juice just long enough to color the wine.

are mostly red berries (think strawberry or cranberry) or watermelon. They should be served chilled, and they pair pretty much with any food, including beef and barbecue. Rosé was made for Sunday afternoon, sitting on the back porch, rosé in hand and burgers on the grill.

BENEFITS INCLUDE:

Look for 2010, and be wary of anything dated before 2009. Rosés are not made to age, and should be fresh and flavorful. The color in older vintages starts to fade, like paper that yellows.

Rosé styles vary by country. Spanish wines are going to be bone dry with less fruit flavor. French rosés are not quite as dry as the Spanish, but they usually don’t have a lot of fruit flavor (and rosé from Provence is among the best in the world). Some U.S. wines are so full of strawberry flavor that they seem sweet, but that’s your taste buds playing a trick on you.

If this is you, please email your resume to Kristy at kgaconnier@advocatemag.com with subject line: resume

The best way to learn about rosé is to taste. My list of recommended rosés is in the dozens, and includes wines from Texas (McPherson), South Africa (Mulderbosch), California (Pedroncelli), France (Cep d’Or), Spain (Cortijo) or Washington state (Charles & Charles).

Sort-of salad nicoise

Americans seem hung up on salads. They’ll eat all sorts of fancy ones at restaurants, but at home are less willing to try anything other than some lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes and bottled dressing tossed together. In fact, those fancy restaurant salads are quite easy to make at home, much less expensive, and they are rosé-friendly. The ingredients, by the way, are just suggestions. This is a terrific way to clean out the refrigerator — use leftover grilled chicken, hard-boiled eggs, potato salad, green beans and bits of grated cheese.

Serves four, takes about 25 minutes

4 to 6 c mixed lettuce, torn

2 to 3 c chopped, raw vegetables such as cucumbers, carrots, mushrooms, red onion and celery

2 c canned beans such as chickpeas or navy beans

2 cans best-quality tuna

1/2 to 1 c black olives

1/2 to 1 c best-quality vinaigrette

1. Arrange the lettuce in a layer on a serving platter. Dress lightly with vinaigrette. Arrange the rest of the ingredients on top of the lettuce, making a design that strikes your fancy. Presentation is part of the fun of this dish.

ask the WINE GUY?

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ROSÉ AND WHITE ZINFANDEL?

Rosé is made to be dry; that is, all the sugar in the grapes is converted into alcohol. White zinfandel (or white merlot) is made to be sweet. Either sugar is added during the winemaking process, or some of the sugar in the grapes isn’t converted into alcohol. Those wines will have a lower alcohol content. —JEFF

FLASH MART (6769 Abrams), Lake Highlands’ gaudiest gas station, has a 10-taco menu that will light your fire — nopalito, tripa and bistec, and breakfast tacos, too. At MICHOACANA, with two Lake Highlands-area locations (9660 Audelia, 6770 Greenville), pick up produce, meat and Mexican meal ingredients, and dine in or takeout tasty tacos and elotes (corn in a cup). For a sit-down Tex Mex meal supported by margaritas ($2.50-$4 at happy hour), TEX MEX CAFÉ (9771 Plano) is familyfriendly and fast. Delivery also is available.

The anatomy of two tacos

Tacos are not just for taquerías anymore. Gourmet taco shops like Rusty’s and Fuzzy’s are turning up all over Dallas, and they’re very popular in our ’hood. Here, we examine the difference between the authentic and the posh.

Let’s lunch

Face it, for most of us working stiffs, lunch must be fast and cheap. Several Lake Highlands spots fit the bill, and with good food to boot.

KAZY’S is hands-down the best find around for sushi lovers. For a low price, order rolls, sashimi and Japanese soups in the sit-down deli area of this Asian market (it’s where some of Dallas’ most exclusive restaurants get their fish and Asian ingredients, by the way). 9256 Marksville at LBJ

SHERLOCK’S is good for a fast lunch, inside or on the patio, into the after-

noon hours — you can hardly go wrong with crispy fish and chips, and the mixed cocktails are $3. Not that we condone boozing it up at lunch. 9100 N. Central at Park

MEXICALI serves up dirt-cheap Tex-Mex dishes that don’t taste like it (dirt, that is). We’re talking sub-$5 enchilada platters that rival what you’ll find at a fancier, more atmospherically desirable location. Its off-the-radar status means a small lunchtime crowd and, in most cases, swift service. 1277 E. Northwest at Jupiter

If, on the other hand, you are schmoozing a client, BAILEY’S PRIMEPLUS STEAKHOUSE, home of the $14 burger, is open in the relatively new Park Lane development. That burger, purportedly made from the most prime bovine parts and dripping in melted sharp cheese, might just be worth it. And items on the lunch menu, such as the $14 onion crusted fresh trout salad, the $15 salmon filet or the $23 filet mignon with veggies and potato, won’t exactly break the bank.

On the fringe

Fine food choices abound in the heart of Lake Highlands, but sometimes you might want to think outside the middle to find some on-the-fringe culinary treasures.

1 Pho 95 and 2 lamei offer fast, inexpensive and authentic Vietnamese food at the shopping center near Walnut Street and Audelia, just east of Richland Community College.

For more options, gigantic portions of pho (Asian soup with noodles and meat or tofu), cheap crispy eggrolls and a selection of interesting drinks from mocha frozen coffee to avocado milkshakes, check out the flamboyantly decorated 3 BisTRo B (oPeninG PaGe) in the same center.

Restaurants in the RoyalSkillman shopping center seem to come and go. Take the tasty and locally owned Burger Spot, which closed last summer after just a few months in business. We don’t want to lose its stillstanding neighbor, ZATO THAI CUISINE AND SUSHI BAR , a small but upscale joint with contemporary Far Eastern-style fare. ron Hall wants to save the world, he says, “one yard at a time.” To some, that might sound corny. But Hall is serious, and for good reason. Before starting Ron’s Organics, Hall worked as a Dallas firefighter for 20 years. In that line of work, he says, “I saw all the damage that chemicals can do and decided to make a change, beginning with my own home.” So he studied, took courses, attended lectures, read books and consulted with some of the leaders in the field of organics. He is both a certified landscape and nursery professional, as well as a licensed irrigator and applicator and a member of the Texas Nursery Landscape Association. With all this experience behind him, Hall can help you obtain and maintain a beautiful and healthy landscape. Ron’s Organics sells nearly two dozen special products — called Ron’s Custom Blends — carefully formulated to make your gardening experiences more rewarding. They are, Hall says, “effective, easy to use, affordable and all natural.” Ron’s Organics also offers lawn maintenance and landscaping, landscape design, irrigation, organic fertilization and stone, flagstone and pavestone work. The garden center, which he runs with his wife, Mona, includes an organic nursery and gift shop. Though Hall worked hard to educate himself about chemicalfree alternatives in order to make his business a success, he’s not the kind of guy to rest on his laurels. He’s constantly striving “to know more, do more and be more” in the field of organic landscape management. “My organic conversion was a struggle,” he says. “But it’s been worth it.”

Several White Rock residents are preparing to take on 340 miles of river

38 June 2011 lakehighlands.advocatemag.com

It is a hot, humid and ridiculously gusty spring afternoon at White Rock Lake. I wait at the lake’s edge and am surprised when a woman extends her hand and asks for help out of the water.

I panic. She’s submerged in the yucky waters of White Rock. I reach to rescue her and soon learn that, a) she is willingly in that water, and b) she is part of the crew that the Advocate is there to interview and photograph — a group of kayakers training at White Rock Lake for the world’s longest river race, the MR340 (that’s 340, as in miles).

Andhere’sthecrazypart:moments later, I am in her outrigger, paddling wildly against the waves (yes, 40 mile-per-hour winds cause powerful surf) and covered in water.

Ned Flottman, a veteran of the MR340, in which participants paddle from Kansas City to St. Charles, Mo., encouraged the little experiment. (“The last time a reporter interviewed me, she refused to get in a boat,” he chides. “Are you scared?”)

Flottman, who has recently moved from the White Rock Lake area to Louisiana, returned to his roots for a weekend to mentor and advise four White Rock-area residents training for the July 2011 event.

Steve Mahelona is an experienced kayaker, but his longest race to date has been about 18 miles, so he has some work to do before tackling the 340. Fortunately, he’ll be riding with experienced long-distance paddler Dan Grubbs.

Mahelona’s wife, Stacie, the aforementioned lady in the water, is ground support for team Hui Hoola, a Hawaiian term for “team” and “heal”. Through the race, TeamHuiHoolaisraisingmoneyfor Susan G. Koman for the Cure.

“Just after we got married, we found out I had breast cancer,” Stacie Mahelona says.

“See, I am just now getting my hair back,” she says, pulling the cap from her head to reveal a shock of in-progress caramelcolored locks.

Steve Mahelona says he’ll tackle the distance in segments.

“I don’t know how it’s humanly possible to do the 340, so we will approach it in three segments,” he says. “That’s easier to digest and wrap my brain around.”

neighborhood residents emily Loerke and her friend, emily McKeaigg, comprise another team training for the 340 in their kayak, River Rocket. The athletic women run and cycle, but this is their first hardcore experience with paddling.

The emilys, like the Mahelonas, are raising money, but in a different vein. McKeaigg and her husband spent years struggling with infertility before deciding to adopt a child. But the expenses run into tens of thousands of dollars, so Loerke, being a die-hard friend, hatched the plan to ask friends, family and readers of her blog, todaysletters.com, to each sponsor

one mile of the race for $15. At 340 miles, that would bring in $5,100 toward the McKeaiggs’ adoption efforts.

When they hit that goal, Loerke celebrated.

“We were able to raise $5,160 in less than four weeks,” she wrote on the site. “This made us cry lots and even throw a few fist bumps and leg shimmies.”

They are still working to raise additional funds toward race expenses.

When Flottman was out of work and living in Dallas, he spent plenty of time circling White Rock Lake and envying the kayakers. After a relative raced the infamous MR340, Flottman — despite having never sat in a canoe, much less owning one — decided he was going to attempt the race, whose website touts the event as “not no mama’s boy float trip.”

Only about two-thirds of the 300-team field actually finished the race. Flottman was one of them.

“I was 182 out of 186 finishers, and it took about four days, but I finished.”

The winners finished in about 40 hours, he says.

McKeaigg and Loerke are eager to learn.

“We are a blank slate,” says Loerke, referring

to her lack of kayaking experience. Stephen Mahelona says hearing someone with experience, such as ned Flottman, talk about the race helps ease his anxiety — even when Flottman is regaling them with stories about kayakers enduring hallucinations after a day or two on the water sans sleep.

“Some of the frontrunners who go straight through say they see dancing bears and cars driving on the river,” Flottman tells the group of paddlers circled around him on the grass near the Mockingbird Bridge.

He describes the fear he felt during the first 50 miles.

“I was scared. I didn’t know how to do this.”

When he made it into the second night, he remembers a “magical” scene where the boat lights against the pitch-black sky “looked like a string of pearls”. He also remembers a couple hundred miles in, sitting in his boat, exhausted, after losing his bearings.

“It was dark, and I thought, ‘I don’t know what to do’.”

So he just sat, and shortly three guys showed up to help him.

“The river culture is amazing,” Flottman says. “People are eager to help you, especially if you’re a newbie.” n

boat camp

A steady stream of runners, in-line skaters and cyclists on the White Rock trail is the norm, but more athletes are getting into the water these days, by way of kayak or canoe. Area schools even offer rowing as a physical education credit, and students from throughout the greater Dallas area have joined the competitive White Rock Boathouse Juniors Crew Team. The team will host weeklong row camps for beginners all summer. New sessions start June 20 and 27, July 18 and 25, and August 1 and 8 for students entering the eighth grade and older. The camp is $75, and need-based scholarships are available. This is a good opportunity to see if your youngster takes to rowing, says mom Monette Irwin, whose daughter Alex rows on the WRBJ team. “Alex has found a sport she is passionate about, she is getting into great shape and she is having fun,” Irwin says. “And it is so beautiful to watch those boats glide across the water.” Interested? There is also an opportunity to check out the row team on National Learn to Row Day, June 4 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at the boathouse at White Rock Lake. Register for a summer session at wrbjuniors.com/summer-camps.

CENTRAL PARK

An outdoor gathering space heralds the beginning of the Lake Highlands Town Center

As Willis Winters inspects the new parkattheLakeHighlandsTown Center, hemakescomparisonsto Lakeside Drive in Highland Park.

“This is really a first-class linear greenbelt,” says Winters, who is an authority on the topic as the Dallas Park Department’s assistant director of planning, design and construction.

The park dips behind the outline of the future Town Center, a project designed to convert roughly 70 acres at Walnut Hill and Skillman into retail, restaurant, residential and office space. The park is situated between a branch of White Rock Creek and the newly paved Watercrest Parkway curving along the property’s east edge. It spans nearly 20 acres — almost one-third of the Town Center property.

Town Center developer Prescott Realty Group fronted the $3 million bill for construction and also agreed to maintain the park from here on out, a job that currently costs about $36,000 a year. Prescott hopes to eventually be reimbursed for some or all of these costs through the Skillman

even though Prescott maintains the park, it was deeded to the City of Dallas this spring for public use. Winters, inspired by the nearby street sign, decided to name it Watercrest Park.

To create the park, Prescott partnered with TBG, Pacheco Koch and Valley Crest between them, they’ve have worked on projectssuchasthe northParkCenter expansion and Town Lake Park in Austin. The design features 14 fountains, including two built into the creek branch that light up at night and “almost look like they’re shooting up like flames,” says Dave Dierkes, a Prescottdirectorwhooversawthepark construction.

Anoutdooramphitheateristucked into one corner so patrons are shielded from traffic sights and sounds. The only disruption is the occasional DART train running along the other side of the creek, but that comes with the territory when the development includes a DART Rail Station.

The amphitheater isn’t big; roughly 200 to 300 people will fit comfortably on its stone benches. And its sound and lighting aren’t equipped for major productions

Dierkes says it has enough power for a guitar amplifier. He says it will be a good venue for outdoor jazz concerts or other more intimate performances. (The space can be reserved through the city’s Park Department.)

The park was designed for neighborhooduse,Dierkessays, andWinters believes it will function as a neighborhoodpark, evenwithoutthebaseball diamond or playground equipment that typically accompany these types of city parks. (Prescott does have plans to add a playground in a fenced-in area near Walnut Hill.)

On nice days, high school students can be found at the park with fishing rods in hand. Walkers, joggers and strollers already are using the trail built along the greenbelt, even though it could be two years before it connects to the larger Dallas trail network.

Someday, theparkwon’tbevisible fromSkillman.Apartmentsatopretail shops will have windows with views into the green space below, Dierkes says, and restaurants with patios backing up to the park will offer diners a setting amid nature.

But construction hasn’t yet begun on those portions of the Town Center. As of press time, Prescott hadn’t announced any planned retail stores or restaurants. In answer to the inevitable question of “when?”,Dierkesresponds,“hopefully soon.”

“It hurtsusasmuchasanyone,” Dierkes says. “It’s a pretty expensive piece of dirt to be sitting undeveloped.”

In the meantime, Watercrest Park is open for use. And in the words of park planning manager Michael Hellmann, “it’s the best park we’ve never built.” n

The Lake Highlands Town Center project is a public and private partnership which will include parks, residential and retail areas. Looking west toward Skillman, the Lake Highlands Town Center project is situated at a busy intersection that developers hope will promote the area as an urban/suburban gathering place for the Lake Highlands community. The Lake Highlands Town Center Trail , which runs along the southern portion of White Rock Creek branch, will eventually connect south to the White Rock Greenbelt Trail and north to a future trail. Willis Winters, assistant director for planning, design and construction for the Dallas Park Department, calls it “one of the best trailheads in the park system.”

Cole says the plan is to take over the space on the right, turning it into an l-shaped dining area to seat 40-50 people. b lueprints are being drawn, and the men of atomic p ie are hoping to knock down the wall between the current and new spaces in June for a completed dining area in early July.

The grill’s opening is tentatively planned for late June or early July.

K

IS

T THE OnLy MARRIAGE THAT SHOUL d REFLECT A KInGd OM

June is wedding month. That shouldn’t surprise us, since the month itself is named for Juno, the Roman goddess of marriage.

There are other reasons for June wedding popularity: School is usually out by then; the Christian Lenten fast is past and feasting may begin again; and if you go back far enough, you find that women planned to have their first child by the next spring in order to get their strength back by the time of fall harvest.

Thus, June weddings, but weddings more than June is what we really care about.

The wedding of William and Catherine just over a month ago transfixed people to their “tellies” all over the globe. (Thank TiVo for the extra sleep in the US of A.) They did it well, the royals, and they did it right—beautiful but not ostentatious, classic yet modern, worshipful and personal. While no one could hope to emulate the wedding in all of its grandeur, anyone marrying should take note of its features.

The Bishop of London, Richard Chartres, preached the wedding homily, and it was a lesson for all preachers at any wedding. For one thing, it was brief. Let us all praise brevity as the soul of wit, to cite Shakespeare (which is especially apt in this case). Let us also praise wit as the substance of soul. The bishop got it right on both counts.

Here’s a bit of his wit (preserving British spellings): “A spiritual life grows as love finds its centre beyond ourselves. Faithful and committed relationships offer a door into the mystery of spiritual life in which we discover this: the more we give of self, the richer we become in soul; the more we go beyond ourselves in love, the more we become our true selves and our spiritual beauty is more fully revealed. In marriage we are seeking to bring one another into fuller life.

“It is of course very hard to wean ourselves away from self-centredness. And people can dream of doing such a thing but the hope should be fulfilled it is necessary a solemn decision that, whatever the difficulties, we are committed to the way of generous love.

“Marriage should transform, as husband and wife make one another their work of art. It is possible to transform as long as we do not

harbour ambitions to reform our partner. There must be no coercion if the Spirit is to flow; each must give the other space and freedom.”

The good bishop reminded us all that every marriage is in a sense a royal one, in that the man and woman are each king and queen in a new creation story, the possibilities of the future flowing through them. The larger point points to more than them, just as Will and Kate represent more than themselves.

Every marriage should point beyond itself. Just as this royal wedding pointed to the king-

dom of Britain, every marriage should be a visible hint of the kingdom of God. How is God’s rule to be pictured in the most intimate human relationships and in the most sacred institutions of society? Marriage should show forth the sacrificial love and faithful devotion of God to the world by the imperfect witness of husband and wife to each other and to whatever family comes of that love.

Weddings are not public celebrations of romantic love that we wish to last forever untouched by time and tide. They are community events of consecration in which couples covenant together, and with God and those gathered, to live in a way that befits their faith and reflects divine love. They are declaring that they will grow toward one another, not apart from one another. The vows in effect state: “I will from this day forward only become who I will be with you, and never without you.”

Such vows reach high. So should marriage.

The grill disappeared. Bar Becuing would have To wai T.

Clifford Goff likes to grill. He has a nice backyard with a large grill/smoker for cooking out and entertaining. He and his family will often have friends and family over for some grilled chicken, maybe some smoked brisket, or any other meat Goff feels like marinating and throwing on the grill. The evening could really turn into a

unfortunately, a thief recently worked up the courage — and strength — to make off with this meat-lover’s machinery.

“We were out of town on a weekend holiday,” Goff says. “It was one of those big smoker/grills and weighed about 250300 pounds, so it had to take more than one person.”

Goff says he was very disappointed to come home and see that the grill was gone,

but happy that it was all that was taken and burglars did not enter his home.

“I smoked and grilled on it all the time. I’m kind of bummed. I’m blown away. That’s all they took. They left the lawn furniture,” he says. “That’s life. Maybe somebody needed it for easter weekend.”

While the grill may be gone, it will soon be replaced. This grill master will not be deterred and already has plans to replace the stolen piece of cookery — only this time he plans to chain and lock it up or bolt the grill into the patio concrete.

Dallas Police Lt. Mackie D. Ham of the northeast Patrol Division says Goff is on the right track with his planned security methods. Lawn and patio furniture, grills, and other outdoors items make easy targets whether in the front yard or the back.

“A chain with a lock would help, but is not theft-proof,” Ham says of securing the grill in the back. “The best idea is to store it inside a garage after each use or hide in a location outside the house with some type of landscaping so it cannot be seen from the roadway.”

Trash Talking

A Pr OPOSAL TO g IV e TH e CIT y A m ONOPOLy ON TH e LANDFILL b USIN e SS , Fr AN kLy, STIN kS

In preparation forconsideration of the topic for this month’s column, here are a few basic observations.

There are two types of people in American society — those who think about the purpose of government, and those who don’t. Within the group of those who think about the purpose of government, there are also two types of people — those who think government can and should do certain things, and those who think that government is unable and/or should not attempt to do certain things.

As a result, there is a constant struggle between those who wish to empower government to do those things (and fund those efforts through fees and taxes) and those who seek to keep such power (and the associated fees and taxes) from government, preferring instead that individuals exercise responsibility over those things through private transactions.

And that’s Political Science 101.

The differences in opinion between these two groups is often so strident and uncompromising that the rhetoric degenerates into nothing but “trash-talking”. In the specific case of this month’s column, it happens to be exactly about trash-talking.

It is easy to understand how this story has been ignored, overlooked or just plain dismissed because it’s about garbage — and who wants to talk about garbage? It reminds me of the commercial for a certain

brand of toilet paper that is currently running on TV, where the lady starts off with, “It’s time to get real about what goes on in the bathroom ...” No thanks.

That’s an invitation for me to immediately change the channel, even if it’s to a Spanishspeaking soap opera (where they’re also probably talking about getting real about what goes on in the bathroom, but at least I can’t understand what they’re saying).

Apparently, in an effort to generate more revenue for the City of Dallas to close the budget gap that exists, city staff is considering a change in trash-disposal policy that

Dallas residents have expressed some concern about becoming the city’s sole dumping ground, so proponents have suggested the ruse of using the city’s transfer stations as interim collections stops, before the trash makes its final journey south.

Not only would that create an unnecessary and grossly inefficient step, but it would also result in an estimated additional 175,000 trips each year by heavy industrial trucks throughout our neighborhoods.

For us in Lake Highlands, that would unavoidably mean that these trucks would be making thousands of trips through our neighborhoods and passing by several schools to the transfer station on Fair Oaks. Using transfer stations would add $3.6 million to $5.4 million to the cost of disposal, which would be passed along to somebody.

would presumably add to the city’s bottom line, but it would also add a few other things.

The city is looking at requiring that all commercial trash be taken to the city’s one landfill in South Dallas. Doing so would result in more revenue for the city because the city would then be operating a monopoly. Currently, commercial trash is disposed of in 12 different landfills located across all parts of Dallas, which are privately owned and operated.

The negative economic consequence is fairly obvious — a monopoly operated by the city would have exclusive control over disposal rates and would be able to raise them at any time for any reason. South

The private waste-hauling companies are trying to get anyone’s attention at city hall to realize how counterproductive such a policy would be for everyone. They have even offered to pay higher franchise fees in an effort to address the city’s budget-driven r easons for contemplating this policy change.

Of course, this becomes an issue only because the city plays a role at all in the landfill business. And since the city owns a landfill, they are now considering ways of moving private companies out of the landfill business altogether and monopolizing the landfill business as a government-provided service only, which would undoubtedly cost Dallas citizens much more in fees and taxes as competition is eliminated and efficiencies are lost.

And when you think of it in that way, you can’t help but conclude that this proposal is a bunch of ... garbage.

LEVEL III NICU

At the Margot Perot Center for Women and Infants, newborns are in good hands. Survival rates at our Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit are among the nation’s highest.* And our approach is familycentric, with rooms designed so parents have the option to spend the night. Each family is considered part of our team and welcome around the clock. And for babies who graduate from the NICU but still require daily monitoring, there’s our Special Care Nursery, where parents can also stay until their baby is ready to go home. All of which allows us to tackle the tiniest challenges with exceptional care.
