BURIED TREASURE

Old-fashioned words may contain timely pearls of wisdom

We’ve just spent the past few days cleaning a portion of our house that has accumulated stuff for the past 19 years.

To be honest, most of the “stuff” was standard garage-sale fare — clothes that no longer fit, and toys that no longer work. Why we were still keeping them is a tribute to laziness, I suppose.

But there were a few gems amidst all of the material stuff we probably didn’t need in the first place.

We found a tiny Minnesota Twins shirt I wore when I was about a year old; my mom saved it, and our now-teenage sons dutifully took their turns with it. Perhaps someday, their kids will do the same.

There were worksheets and papers from our kids’ elementary school years, days not exactly forgotten but far from fresh in our memories. The filing system was unorthodox (a dusty pile beneath a bed), but it worked, and now we’ll have something to look at and become tearyeyed about again someday.

And there was even something from 1895; not the original, but a long-forgotten, weathered copy of a poem someone exposed me to when I was a 7th grader.

Some of the language isn’t politically correct by today’s standards, so you’ll have to substitute the word “woman” for “man” if you’re so inclined. I know poetry is kind of “out” in this electronic age, but I think this poem — “If” by Rudyard Kipling, best known as the author of the “Jungle Book” — still has something to say today, even if it is a little dusty.

IfIf you can keep your head when all about you, Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;

If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too;

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting; Or, being lied about, don’t deal in lies,

Or, being hated, don’t give way to hating, And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream and not make

dreams your master; If you can think — and not make thoughts your aim;

If you can meet with triumph and disaster, And treat those two impoters just the same; If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken, Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,

Or watch the things you gave your life to broken, And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings, And risk it on one turn of pitchand-toss,

And lose, and start again at your beginnings, And never breathe a word about your loss;

If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew, To serve your turn long after they are gone,

And so hold on when there is nothing in you, Except the will that says to them: “Hold on!”;

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with kings — nor lose the common touch;

If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you; If all men count with you, but none too much;

If you can fill the unforgiving minute, With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run; Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it, And — which is more — you’ll be a man my son!

In response to the column “Sign Language: Is a new city ordinance ‘silencing’ our neighborhood mom-and-pops?” by Ellen Raff (July Advocate), yes, we kept hoping that common sense would prevail and a middle ground could be reached. However, all we get at AAA Vacuum are visits from code compliance officers. On Jan. 9, I pleaded our case to City Council. Mayor Tom Leppert asked me to meet with him, Mayor Pro Tem Dwayne Caraway and two of the city’s code compliance directors outside chambers. At that time, they seemed very sympathetic to our case. They said they realized the code needs some “tweaking”. We are not asking much, only to be able to let passersby know what we do at our store. The Institute for Justice lawsuit is only to protect our and your constitutional rights to freedom of speech. There is no money involved. Lake Highlands needs more businesses, not closed businesses. There’s an old saying that goes, “A business without a sign is a sign of no business.”

As a resident of WRNV (Flagpole Hill), I just cannot tell you how outraged and upset by this I am [Advocate Back Talk blog, June 30, “ ‘Severe blow’ in store for White Rock Trail users”]. I run and/or ride through that intersection (not to mention use it to go to and from work) every day. The idea that it will be closed for 2 years is unconscionable. As for those concerned about the Buckner route, I cannot agree more. I ran there two weeks ago; the signal buttons were broken, glass all the way across the crosswalk, which is barely defined. This is not a reasonable or safe alternate route. I hope there is something that can be done. I understand the need for progress, but they have closed access to my neighborhood from Northwest Highway (via Goforth), which has been locked down for two years now. Can anyone help?

faceBook fan profile // M ARY G U th RI e, 53, is a development assistant and a musician (in bands Merry and the Mood Swings and RePlay). She is married with two kids, 21 and 15, and one dog.

what’s a little known fact about you?

I took up martial arts at age 40; earned my black belt at age 46.

Ee-yah!

what’s your most embarrassing moment?

Pulled up into the drive-thru bank lane in a beaten-up old van and proceeded to drop my check out the window; I apologized to the waiting bank teller and then climbed out the drivers-side window to retrieve it instead of simply opening the door. Not one of my brightest days!

what’s the one thing you wish you could do but are reasonably sure you never will?

A back flip. They look like so much fun!

what’s your strangest or most random Facebook Friend connection?

Yura, a musician from Russia — don’t know how he found me and everything he writes is in Cyrillic!

what did you want to be when you grew up?

First, a saint (the glory!). Then, a meter maid (the power!). Then, a reporter (the stories!).

If you could eat at only one neighborhood restaurant for the rest of your life, which would it be?

Bobo China — something about the place brings out great conversations that go with great food.

how would you explain your neighborhood to someone living in, say, newfoundland?

We have pretty houses, lots of trees, next to a good-sized lake and horse stables, and are only 15 minutes to downtown. Much warmer than Canada, but watch out for melting summers and B-52-sized mosquitoes!

what brings a smile to your face every time?

Dogs playing. Ours has a good buddy in the neighborhood and when they play it’s a real lift! Wish I could run and bounce and tumble like that!

what do you love about the age you’re at now?

Takes more to faze me, less to amaze me, life gets sweeter and deeper the longer you’re around. (Hey, this sounds like a new song!)

what are some jobs you’ve held in the past?

Ice cream scooper, laser light show assistant, disco DJ, radio magazine co-host. The best was a strategic planning position at Dallas Heritage Village. Worst was PR director for a local network TV affiliate — I used to cry on my way into work!

Do you have a favorite quote?

“Great things aren’t written, they’re re-written.”

what are you afraid of, rationally or irrationally?

Alligators! Rationally, because they’re alligators, irrationally, because there are none around here

13 Things That YOU Can Do to Make Your Home Remodel a Success

Once you’ve selected a professional contractor for your remodeling project, be confident and trust the decision you’ve made. At the same time, be proactive and vigilant to ensure your project’s success. With the help of NARI – the National Association of the Remodeling Industry – we’ve assembled a checklist to use no matter which contractor you choose.

List the Procedures in Phases and have the contractor explain the time needed. Plan Adequate Storage Areas for your belongings and for the working crew’s materials.

Put your project manager’s number in your cell phone for when important questions inevitably arise.

Consider the logistics in ordering and delivering all of the materials that will be used. Material deliveries can be affected by weather, and sometimes the manufacturers or distributors make mistakes with materials, quantities, or dates.

Select materials (paint color, floor tile, etc.) in advance so they’ll be ready in time for installation.

Try to stay out of the construction area to maintain safety for everyone in the home.

Expect the unexpected. Unforeseen incidents happen: late deliveries, shipment shortages, wrong parts, oversights, rain, and on-the-spot changes. Removing an older floor or a wall may uncover a problem that demands plan revisions.

Workmanship. Know what to expect in terms of industry standards of quality workmanship so that you can inspect the work as stages are completed. Ask your contractor about the stages of your project and who will be involved. Separate crews install framing, siding, insulation, masonry, finish carpentry, and roofing. Painters, electricians, and plumbers and other trades will come and go at various stages. With so many moving parts, allow for a few disruptions.

Cover furniture and carpeting. A quality contractor will cover the area for you to protect your home and belongings.

Hovering over workers can cause resentment and a loss of focus. Trust the professionalism of the crews and they’ll work better.

Limit questions to workers. Most workers are simply following orders and construction specs. Only discuss construction changes with your project manager.

Plan to do without water or power when workers shut off lines. Avoid frustration by being prepared.

Feel free to talk to us about any of these items in detail. At Bella Vista, we understand that it’s not enough to just have a

Will Morgan’s shy smile and polite, softspoken commentary belies his near-celebrity status. Since learning last year that he had Ewing’s sarcoma, a form of bone cancer, the Merriman Park Elementary seventh grader has received an outpouring of support from the Lake Highlands neighborhood, mom Renee Long says. “We really want to thank the community. When Will was diagnosed, we asked for prayers when I started seeing all the people rallying around us, I knew that Christ was at work and that we could use this to share his message.” Merriman Park Elementary, the Forest Meadow Junior High Football Team, the Lake Highlands High School Football team and the Spring Valley Athletic Association, where Will once played football, have all shown their support by wearing “Will to Win” stickers and T-shirts designed by Keith Beasley, father of Will’s friend Braden Beasley. Will received cards, video tributes (a nice one from MPE principal Laurie Taylor) and posters, several made during a girls’ slumber party. Parents of classmates often showed up with dinners or books needed for lessons.

Last November, Will joined the LHHS football team as an honorary captain, and in May, “Team Will”, comprised of 60-some friends and family members, raised more than $16,000 for the DFW CureSearch Walk benefiting pediatric cancer research. This summer, Will is finished with chemotherapy and things are starting to get back to normal, his stepdad Sam Long says. He will need to return to Medical City for checkups and at least one more surgical procedure. Will doesn’t seem to fear future hospital visits, noting that Medical City recently remodeled the pediatric wing. Rather than feeling down about his health struggles, Will views his experience as a chance to help other kids like him, he says. “Helping other people makes me feel good.”

NOMINATE A CHARITY

for recognition at local running events. The Dallas Running Club has announced a new program to help local charities raise awareness. The running club will select a different non-profit organization to feature each month, organizers say. Featured charities will be given a booth and may choose to sponsor a water station at a DRC racing event, held the first Saturday of each month. All monthly, featured charities will then be invited to set up a booth at the largest race of the year, The DRCHalf Marathon in November. Each nonprofit will be asked to provide five to 10 volunteers for the race. Contact jason@dallasrunningclub. com if you would like to nominate a charity, and visit dallasrunningclub.com for more information.

MAKE ANY SPACE BEAUTIFUL

Decorating a small space can be tough. Fortunately we’ve got a few tricks up our sleeve that will have you decorating anything from a dorm room to a breakfast nook with bravado.

you breakfast to music here) Storage Space. Fortunately, we’ve

Now if your entire home is a small space you’re likely plagued by the eternal scourge of (insert ominous music here) Storage Space. Fortunately, we’ve got some tips for that too.

Now, there’s a myth out there that to make a small space feel bigger you should only use white on your walls. Totally not true! By painting your wall a lighter version of your favorite hue and adding some small brighter, richer highlights (on the baseboard or curtain trim for example) you can achieve the same benefits of a white walled room without the super boring color palette.

While we’re on the subject of color, pick a single one that fits in well with your scheme and make sure all of the furniture in the room is that color. This will really bring the room together from a visual standpoint, creating an effect that plays on your sense of sight. The continuity of color causes the eye to glide over the room with ease.

Another furniture tip you might consider: If you have large pieces of furniture against the wall, paint or slip cover them the same color as the wall they are against. This will cause them to almost “melt” into the wall.

Of course when following these tips, you need to decide for yourself exactly what you’re trying to accomplish. You might not necessarily want your room to appear to be larger than it is. Sometimes a small space should be exactly what it is: a small space. It’s a great chance to create a room with a very cozy appeal. In these cases, use earth tones with lighter accents and white to keep it from becoming too dungeon like. Unless of course that’s what you’re going for… And in that case, have at it!

LEARN ALL ABOUT the EXPERT

important thing pot in some much needed Wire baskets in the

The most important thing to remember here is to utilize walls and ceiling. Things like pegboards, hanging laundry bags and pot racks can be invaluable in saving some much needed space. Wire baskets in the kitchen and bathroom can hold small items with ease and hanging shoe rack can free up a lot of closet space. And if you get really desperate? Cover a large storage box with a sheet and you’ve got yourself an ottoman!

You might be wondering if there is anything you should avoid when decorating a small space. Great question! Trust me, there are a few danger zones. One thing you should avoid is the area rug. This is tough to do as most area rugs are pretty boss looking and you’re probably going to want one. Resist the urge and keep your floor as clean and open as possible.

And as long as you’re simplifying your floor, you might as well do the same thing to your windows. A small space is simply not the place to put your fancy puffed out lacy window treatments as fabulous as they may be! (Save those for your wow-rooms, like the dining room, living room or formal study.) Keep them pretty simple and the same color as your walls.

Finally, I’d like to leave you with a tip you won’t find anywhere else: Buy a goldfish. Watching him swim around in that tiny glass prison will make your cramped room seem like a banquet hall in comparison. Not to mention giving yourself the illusion of superiority. That’s it gentle reader. Now, you get out there and make that small space ab-fab (absolutely fabulous)!

TC SHAVED ICE DOESN’T POST ANY HOURS OF operation, but when temperatures heat up, you can count on having your Tiger’s Blood snocone. “If it’s hot, people know we’re supposed to be open,” owner Xavier Hernandez says. “It’s not odd for them to honk or knock on the window. We will run it until it’s not hot anymore.” Family owned and operated, the shack offers 30 flavors that can make countless combinations. TC’s signature treat is the Knock Out — your choice of shaved ice sandwiched between two scoops of homemade piña colada ice cream. Hernandez created the recipe himself and recommends it with mango or bubblegum flavors. Most people just use the drive-thru window, but it’s not uncommon to see families setting up lawn chairs outside their cars to sit and stay a while.

eco-wine

BenziGer S A uviGnon BLA nC ($12) California>

The market for organic products in the United States has grown more than 25-fold in the last two decades, so it’s not surprising to learn that wineries have joined the move toward more eco-friendly products. But there are two important things to understand in a discussion of eco-friendly wine. First, it’s not as easy to identify a green wine — which can fall into one of four categories — as it is an organic potato, which is either organic or not. Second, no one has quite figured out whether eco-friendly wines taste better because they’re environmentally sound or because better winemakers use those techniques.

Eco-friendly wine falls into one of four groups:

First, “made with organic grapes”, which is regulated by the federal government. But this doesn’t guarantee that other parts of the winemaking process, like wood barrels used for aging, are organic.

Second, “organic”, which is wine made without added sulfites (though the grapes themselves don’t have to be organic).

Third, “bio-dynamic”, the next step beyond organic, based on principles established by European philosopher Rudolf Steiner almost 100 years ago.

Fourth, “sustainably farmed”, which calls for growers and wineries to use environmentally friendly, socially equitable and economically feasible methods to grow grapes and make wine. It’s certified by a private group, the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance.

These eco-friendly wines are a good way to learn about what’s available, and you can find them all at Central Market:

• Chimango Tempranillo ($9): This red wine from Argentina, made with organic grapes, is from Familia Zuccardi, a pioneer in green wine in South America. It’s fruitier than a Spanish tempranillo, but not as fruity as a malbec.

• Benziger Sauvignon Blanc ($12) This sustainablyfarmed white, from a leading California eco-friendly producer, is one of my favorites. It’s not as citrusy as a New Zealand sauvignon blanc, with more traditional characteristics like lime zest. Best yet, it’s a hot weather wine.

• Sacra Natura ($22). This Spanish red blend is labeled organic, and has the Spanish balance between fruit and acid. There are also some spicy overtones, something to look for if you wonder how wine can have such a thing.

Jeff SieGeL’S WeeKLy Wine revieWS appear every Wednesday on the Advocate Back Talk blog, lakehighlands.advocatemag.com/blog.

WITH YOUR WINE

Lemon ice

It’s hot. Everyone is cranky. So buy some lemons on closeout and make this, which is so easy you’ll wonder why you never did it before. It doesn’t need an ice cream maker or top chef skills — just lots of lemons and and a freezer.

Serves four, takes about 2 1/2 hours (adapted from Mark Bittman’s “How to Cook Everything”)

1 to 2 c of simple syrup

1 1/2 c freshly squeezed lemon juice (about 12 lemons)

1. Make the simple syrup by combining 2 cups water and 1 cup sugar in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, and stir constantly until sugar dissolves. Let cool

2. Mix 1 cup of cooled simple syrup with the lemon juice. Add more syrup if it’s not sweet enough (which is a matter of taste).

3. Pour the mixture into a shallow glass or ceramic pan and freeze for about 2 hours. Stir every 30 minutes to break up the mixture, which gives it its unique texture.

ask the WINE GUY?

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A BLEND AND A VARIETALWINE?

A varietal wine is wine made with just one grape variety, like chardonnay or merlot. A blend is made with more than one grape. There isn’t any difference in terms of quality between the two; mostly, the difference is in the person drinking the wine and what they like.

volunteered for, but was never sent to, Vietnam. Instead, I spent the war years working in Intelligence from Washington, D.C. I grew up in a small town where patriotism ran high, but after two years of the war, I began to sense there was something terribly wrong with it, especially as friends and colleagues of mine began to return from Vietnam and discuss it. Though I was against the war, I had always felt a little bad that I wasn’t sent, and grateful to those who went and fought. In 1982 I learned the Vietnam Veterans Memorial was to be dedicated. I lived in Florida, but it seemed necessary that I go. I flew into D.C. the day of the dedication, and what struck me, and what I will always remember, was how bittersweet it was. It was very much a ceremony by the veterans for the veterans. Politicians and probably much of the public seemed to want to forget rather than remember. The highest-ranking politician to speak at the dedication was a senator, I believe it was Sen. John Warner, but it didn’t seem fair or right that others were not there. There was a parade, though, and what got to me was the sight of veterans — many in uniform, in wheelchairs and obviously bearing the scars of the war — cheering other veterans. It will always stick in my memory as an important day. I know I would have felt regret if I had not attended. To this day, the Veterans Memorial in D.C. is a powerful and healing monument. I think its presence has contributed to the respect and honor with which we view veterans now, and time has allowed for the bitterness and anger to subside.”

As told by Elinor Pace, who was in berlin when the Wall came down

“ My late husband, Madison, and I arrived in Berlin the day after so-called “Checkpoint Charlie”, the point at the Berlin Wall between West and East Berlin, was torn down. We were with a tour group at a hotel in Dresden. At some point we heard what sounded like gunfire, and we feared that violence had broken out. But soon, it dawned on us that it wasn’t fighting but rather people celebrating in the streets. The people were overjoyed with their newfound freedom. We had the opportunity to witness the incredible difference between the two sides of the country. Crossing from the east side to the west side of Berlin was like crossing into another world. The western side looked like something out of the early 1900s. Everything was badly in need of paint and repair; it was dark and soot covered. But the people were so excited to be reunited that they flew flags from every window — it was the most wonderful thing. Every house flew the German flag, which was something they were never allowed to do under the communist rule. Having lived through WWII, we all understood the magnitude of what was happening. We managed to chip a bit off the wall and we were surprised at how difficult that was, even with a hammer. ”

26 JULY 2010 lakehighlands.advocatemag.com
“ We had the opportunity to witness the incredible difference between the two sides of the country. ”

AS TOLD BY Don Lee, who grew up near historical train tracks

“ Friday, April 13, 1945, just before noon,I stood across from the Southern Railway tracks in Buford, Ga., and watched the train go by that was carrying the body of President Franklin Roosevelt. I will always remember that event.The train was moving very slowly, and people lined the railroadtracks for as far as you could see both ways. As I recall, his casket was positioned on the back of the train with soldiers surrounding it. Hehad died the day before in Warm Springs, Ga. — he was sitting for a portrait when he fell over dead from a stroke. His funeral was held the next day, Saturday, April 14, 1945 in Washington, D.C., and he was buried in New York. These were the same train tracks that ran many, many troop trains during World War II. We lived very close to the tracks. When a troop train came through, we kids would run down and wave at the soldiers.No air conditioning then, so the windows would be open, and the soldiers would wave and throw out candy and chewing gum to us. This was a real treat because these items were rationed then.I have often wondered how many of those soldiers never returned from the war.”

AS TOLD BY Scott Causey, who was at Parkland Hospital the day John F. Kennedy died

8615 Lullwater Drive Dallas, Texas 75238

“ I was in the ninthgrade when my mom took my brother, sister and I to the corner of Lemmon and Mockingbird to watch John F. Kennedy’s motorcade pass. After waving at the president — I was so close I could have reached out and touched him, it seemed we returned home to make lunch, and soon after heard a report that Kennedy had been shot and that his motorcade was headed to Parkland hospital. My mother took my brother and sister to school, and somehow I talked her into not taking me to school at Cary Junior High but to work with her. A social worker at Children’s Medical Center at the time, my mom had an office almost directly under Parkland’s emergency room. We were one of the last cars allowed inside the back, gated entrance before

the area was cordoned off. I spent the next two hours or so sitting in the emergency room with the likes of Sen. Ralph Yarbrough and CBS’s Dan Rather. With no internet and no cell phones, reporters fought each other to use the two pay phones in the room. The bloody convertible limo sat just outside the window. Eventually, a hearse parked next to it. No one ever asked who I was or asked me to leave. I am 60 years old now, but I will never forget that day. Several months later, the event was being discussed on a local radio station. I called in and told them about my experience. They didn’t believe me. Even some other callers said they doubted I could have been there. I suppose a 14-year old kid just doesn’t have that much credibility. My mother is now 83, and she can still tell you about it.”

CloCkwise from above/ The mourning dove, often seen in open fields or on overhead perches such as telephone poles, might soon be outnumbered by the larger whitewinged doves that have moved here from the south, says betsy baker, an audubon member and bird watcher who frequents the old fish hatchery, a popular birding spot southwest of the lake./ The american white pelican can often be spotted in sunset bay, near the southeastern shore of the lake./ The brown thrasher has a repertoire of more than 2,000 original songs./ The northern mockingbird, our state bird, is named for the male’s habit of mimicking the songs of all the birds it hears in its lifetime.

ABOVE/ Many people consider the vividly colored wood duck to be the most beautiful of all waterfowl, Baker says, pointing out its so-called “Cleopatra eye”. She says that a local Boy Scout troop helps the White Rock Lake wood duck population by placing nest boxes around the lake and hatchery. It’s not always easy for wood ducks to find a suitable natural nesting environment. In manmade alternatives, hens can nest in relative safety from predators .

TOP/ The blue jay, which resides in the eastern states, is known for its intelligence, complex social systems with tight family bonds and, by the casual observer, for its noisy calls. But the blue jay has a more musical and softer sound than one might expect, Baker says. CENTER/ Robins might be seen “flying overhead in flocks on early winter mornings, hunting for worms in damp patches, alone or in small groups,” Baker notes. “They really seem to get around.” BOTTOM/ Yellow-rumped warblers are affectionately called “butterbutts” by some bird lovers, Baker says. “These little birds with the patch of bright yellow feathers just above the beginning of the tail are here year round and can often be found foraging in flocks,” she says.

MEANS SOMETHING DIffERENT THESE DAYS

Somehow summer schedules still squeeze sweltering spiritual soirees and sojourns between semesters.

Those of you with more years behind you than ahead recall two-week long revival services conducted under brush arbors with lemonade and funeral home fans. The seersucker-clad evangelist sweated out the heat and dealt out some hellfire of his own in hopes of keeping you from it eternally.

Youth camps usually found a way to add more heat, if not light, by concluding with a campfire. Marshmallows roasting on sticks, testimonies of how one’s life had changed that week, and singing old standards like “Do, Lord”, “Kumbaya” and “Pass It On” kept the heart strangely warm and tender.

Vacation Bible School was hardly a vacation for mothers who went hard to work on crafts that would end up in shadow boxes or on refrigerators as reminders that God wanted to make something good of these kids. Little ones pledged their allegiance to the Christian flag, the Bible and the American flag (the order I prefer). They learned Bible stories like Daniel in the lion’s den, Noah and the ark, Jonah and the whale, and Jesus calling his disciples, feeding the 5,000, and calming the storm.

These things still happen in many churches, but something else has been added that is worth noting, and it’s a something that has also reshaped us all for good: Mission trips are all the summer rage now.

The word “mission” conjures missionaries sent to remote parts of the world where the heathen know not the God of Jacob or Jesus. Missionaries carried the good news with them to these foreign lands, lived among them as awkward visitors in native garb, and then came back to our churches on summer Sunday nights to show slides and build support. They did a lot of good, driving out superstition in favor of faith, and stopped many a virgin from being thrown into a volcano to appease an angry god. Though well-meaning, they sometimes also brought their Western ways with them, which made it seem that they were bringing a Western Jesus, too.

Nowadays we are learning better to respect the cultures we enter when we go. We are looking for the Christ who has already beaten us there. We are as eager to learn from them as to teach

them. We go to be changed as much as to preach change to others.

We used to delegate mission work to career missionaries. While they still go for us, we also go now. Sometimes we go to help missionaries. Sometimes we go because fewer missionaries go fulltime now. But we are going more now than ever. Instead of sending only our money and prayers, we are sending each other and going ourselves.

We used to think we were going in order to change the world that needed changing “over there”, as if our world “back here” didn’t need changing. We are finding that the world is being changed as much because it is changing here as

there, and it is changing here partly because we have gone on mission there.

When nearly a hundred of our church’s youth and adult sponsors returned last month from a mission trip to the Dominican Republic, their mostly educated white world that bears for them enormous promise of prosperity was less important. Making friends with Dominican kids, who have very little of their own but faith, family and friendship, taught our kids that their lives consist of more than the sum of their things. They got out of their comfortable routines and learned that the world’s goods are not only unequally distributed but that opportunity is, too. They also got to question their unspoken assumption that God blesses them with more because of their own goodness and industry.

The Christian mission enterprise in the world is maturing for the better. If these kids are evidence of its value, we will all be the richer for it.

Mattito’s Tex Mex Cocina 1 restaurant owner, Dallas native Jeff Frankel, recently made a big announcement in a video on his company’s website (mattitos.com). Frankel is expanding his local chain of award-winning Tex Mex restaurants to include a third location at 7778 Forest (formerly a Black Eyed Pea), located near Central Expressway between Dickey’s and Schlotsky’s The new Mattito’s is scheduled to open on Sept. 1 — exactly 30 years to the day after, and right next door to the space where he opened his first restaurant. The brightly painted, 5,500-square foot space will have a menu similar to those of the other two locations in Uptown and Frisco. The new restaurant will also include a banquet hall and a spacious 1200-square foot patio.

Bringing Frankel’s story full circle, some Lake Highlands residents may remember when I Love Yogurt occupied part of the Forest Lane restaurant row nearly 30 years ago. Frankel conceptualized and opened the yogurt and sandwich shop, the first of many restaurant and bakery ventures, the summer before his freshman year of college.

Dallas-based Which Wich? is also opening up a new restaurant on the same block (between Chipotle and Office Depot) soon. The popular sandwich chain was started by another young local restaurateur, Jeff Sinelli. Sinelli is best known for opening, franchising and eventually selling Genghis Grill (original location in Old Town on Greenville). The first Which Wich? opened in downtown Dallas in 2003, and at present 100-plus restaurants have been franchised in 14 states.

The Majestic Liquor Store on Greenville near Walnut Hill has closed. Majestic Liquor Stores filed a Chapter 11 bankruptcy petition earlier this summer in an effort to restructure its debt. The company, one of the area’s oldest and largest liquor store chains, owns and operates 45 stores, of which they claim “most will

stay open”.

ictim: e arl Lacy

The c rime: b urglary of a motor vehicle

Date: Sunday, June 13

Time: b etween 11 p.m. and 7 a.m.

Location: 7200 block of c laybrook

T H e p I pe S W e R e gone.

Earl Lacy has smoked pipes for 53 years. He worked in the cigar, pipe and tobacco business, and finds a nice pipe filled with fine tobacco a great way to unwind.

“It’s relaxing to me,” he says.

Unfortunately, Lacy left six of his fine pipes in his car June 13, the same night a thief broke into several cars in his neighborhood. The pipes, valued at $800, were gone, along with 40 CDs and a broken car window that will need to be repaired. His car had been parked in front of his Merriman Park North home.

“They hit about five or six cars in the neighborhood on the same night,” Lacy says. “They hit two of us on Claybrook. They hit my neighbor’s daughter’s car across the street. My neighbors heard them and went outside, and then noticed that my truck had been broken into, too. Unfortunately, I left some stuff in there that they got away with.”

Glass was everywhere, and Lacy was quite frustrated to be a victim and have some of his excellent pipes stolen.

“They found some blood inside of my truck and took a DNA sample,” he says. “I hope the [thief] bled to death.”

Dallas Police Officer A.J. Serratos with the Northeast Patrol Division says criminals may often work together, but hit several cars separately looking for anything of value.

“Sometimes crooks don’t work alone, and they wait for certain hour of the early morning to break into cars, especially if they are left on the street,” Serratos says. “In Texas, a vehicle is burglarized every two and half minutes.”

Serratos also recommends parking cars in a garage if at all possible, and if it has to be parked in a driveway or on the street, emptying the car of anything that a crook might be interested in.

“Its very important to not leave anything inside a car no matter what time of day,” Serratos says. Always remember to ‘take, lock and hide’ all your belongings.”

town center or tent city?

Will the Town Center ever actually start to take on the appearance of a town center, rather than that of a neighborhood recently wiped clean by an efficient tornado, with neatly paved streets and sidewalks to nowhere?

We had better hope so for more reasons than we think. The longer it sits vacant, the more fearful I am that its future use will become something less than our highest aspirations.

Yes, that’s right, fellow Lake Highlanders! Clearing out five apartment complexes (leaving only 9,231 more apartment complexes in our community) for that someday Town Center might end up being only a short-lived step in the direction of regaining some sense of proportion regarding the concentration of multi-family housing in Lake Highlands relative to the rest of the City of Dallas. That’s because the Dallas Housing Authority recently announced that Lake Highlands is one of only a few “lucky” communities in the city scheduled to play host to “chronically homeless” and “formerly incarcerated” individuals that DHA is trying to park somewhere.

And with whom does Lake Highlands share this dubious honor? Well, there’s the No. 1 crime location in the city — Vickery Meadow; another high crime location in far East Dallas on Ferguson Road; and a location in Plano (how did they get dragged into this?). The two apartment complexes to be used in Lake Highlands are in the Forest/Audelia area, which happens to rank as the No. 2 crime location in the city.

I’m sure that some ivory-tower thinker has

this all figured out, but does anyone else wonder how dropping “chronically homeless” and “formerly incarcerated” people into the top crime locations in the city is likely to help them in their journey to rehabilitation? Are we trying to rehabilitate them, or just make them better at being bad?

To add insult to ignorance, the DHA apparently thought that publishing a notice of this announcement in the very well-read “public notice” section of the not so wellread Dallas Morning News represented sufficient “dialogue” with the affected communities. A DHA spokesman commented that the notice was published, as required, to inform the public of the plans, saying: “We’ve not done anything different from prior approaches we’ve taken historically.”

Well, if you’re simply following your past practice of not talking to neighborhoods before dumping “chronically homeless” and “formerly incarcerated” people into their communities, then I don’t know why in the world we should have any misgivings or concerns — why didn’t you just say so? Judging from the advocatemag.com blog activity on this topic, however, Lake Highlanders appear to be interested in having just a tad more dialogue.

As one commenter observed: “It’s ironic that the federal government takes our tax money to house people in our neighborhoods without our consent.”

Well, yes — and that’s just one example of what has become an endless list of “ironic” uses of our tax money by our government to do things to us and against us that would have our founding fathers fully convinced that we have clearly “losted” what they founded. And they are using our tax money here to forcibly relocate not just any people — but “chronically homeless” and “formerly incarcerated” people.

It’s also ironic that the ivory towers where liberal thinkers reside never seem to make it onto the DHA’s list of preferred locations.

So, as this story unfolds, and a convoy of “chronically homeless” and “formerly incarcerated” folks head to Lake Highlands, I can’t help but wonder:

1) Will this be the first wave of endless waves to come in a program that we won’t be able to resist because “we already are home to others who have come before, so what’s the big deal?” In fact, when asked his opinion, Dallas City Councilman Jerry Allen used that very analogy, and conceded that trying to stop DHA at this point would be like going to the ocean and trying to stop the waves from splashing on the shore.

2) How will this program be monitored and measured to determine if it is having any positive results at all or, more likely, if it is just a way to dump unwanted people on defenseless communities?

And, finally, my real nightmare: the longer that the Town Center sits idle, the more concerned I become that DHA will decide that the property would make a good emergency “tent city” for the “chronically homeless” and “formerly incarcerated”, and then the tent city will be converted into “new” public housing, and our best opportunity to ignite new development in Lake Highlands will have been lost to those folks who are well-intentioned and full of hope and change — and live in ivory towers far from the “chronically homeless” and “formerly incarcerated”.

Editor’s note: As this magazine went to press, the Dallas Housing Authority announced that it would withdraw plans to move formerly incarcerated individuals into 20 units at Woodside Condominiums. For more information, visit advocatemag.com and search:
