And the winner is … White Rock Skate Center. With its glittering disco balls and funky tunes, the rink offers a modern-day taste of the 1970s, and it’s a draw for families across Lake Highlands. It’s no surprise that Lake Highlands Advocate readers voted it their favorite place for kid-centric entertainment. It’s hard for anyone to not feel like a kid when they slap on a pair of wheels and head to the center of the rink for the “Hokey Pokey.” Keeping that retro vibe is good for nostalgia and business, owner Chuck Connor says. Patrons love rolling in and finding exactly what they remember from childhood. “I see so many parents come in and show their kids around, saying ‘I used to come here,’ and they tell me, ‘I’m so glad you’re still here’.” Then there is the famed money machine, where dollar bills whip around in a frenzied gust of wind as excited birthday boys and girls (and adults) try to capture the cash. Connor’s dad built the rink in 1973. He’s been running the place for some 40 years now. The roller rink is open Thursday through Sunday during the summer, and Friday through Sunday during the school year.

Runner-up: Audelia Road Library
