That gig has been all consuming, Pannek says. Once it’s done, the focus will be the wedding, the Lash Loft expansion and then the next art endeavor.
BABB |
Pannek has helped build “a bunch of crazy weird” items for Gary Isett — a well-known East Dallas resident with a fantastical front lawn populated at various times with a purple unicorn Pegasus (Peggy), Kip’s Big Boy, 10-foot rainbow velociraptor, one maniacle French Fry Man and a Cowboys-blue Billiken, to name a few.
In this case, no animals were harmed, and the Moouises’ (there are five sculptures) price tag is $50,000 apiece. Pannek has sold two, he says, and he’s negotiating with a local establishment regarding a third. The entrepreneurial couple is considering donating one if they find a just-right foundation.
W
hen a couple of whimsical artists moved into a quiet White Rock area neighborhood, extraordinary things followed.
Lake Highlands native Preston Pannek and his partner Adrienne Creasey, together known as The House of Pannek, purchased a place in Forest Hills, and Moouis Vuitton — a life-sized bovine featuring the recognizable Louis Vuitton rainbow pattern, a zipper and purse handles — took up a prominent place on their frontLikelawn.fashion designer Louis Vuitton, The House of Pannek — painters and sculptors described in promos as creators of lighthearted abstract and geometrical pop culture mashups — turned a cow into a high-end handbag.

By comparison, the Pannek yard is tame, although Pannek says he would love to get something like what Isett has “going on this side of the lake.”
september 2022 lakehighlands.advocatemag.com 9
Over the summer, the Moouis on Barbaree Boulevard became a tourist attraction, which has been fun, Pannek says.
“What usually happens — a vehicle comes slowly rolling down the street, then they turn around, come to a stop in front of the house. Then the windows come down and the cameras and phones come out,” he says. “We will be sitting on the deck some evenings and hear someone yell, ‘We love your cow!’ It’s a good time. We’re super happy everybody’s enjoying it.”
The House of Pannek is responsible for hundreds of colorful street murals throughout Dallas. They started by painting 10 around Deep Ellum — there’s Bart Simpson in a psychedelic scene from the romantic comedy Say Anything ( Say Yes, Say No at 3000 Canton) or Donald Duck as Hunter S. Thompson in Fear and Loathing (3013 Elm) — where they lived for the last 10 years before relocating to their two-story home on the large lot near White Rock Lake.
The whole Moouis Vuitton thing has been fun, but The House of Pannek is ready to move on, he says. “Some of the big things will just have to wait till we get back from our honeymoon.”
Pannek and Creasey also own Lash Loft in Deep Ellum. They are eyeing a second location in Lake Highlands, but that announcement won’t officially come until after their October wedding, Pannek says. Throughout August, Pannek has been making regular appearances with Modelo Custom Shop. Sponsored by Modelo beer and manned by Los Angeles artist Mario Zucca, a 1963 Ford Econoline van turned mobile art studio makes appearances at bars and restaurants where regional artists join to paint tote bags for attendees. They were in DFW all month. It’s all about celebrating local artists, according to the company.
Among other things, they are bringing Moouis on tour to Pete’s Dancing Marlin in Deep Ellum in November and painting a new mural there. Also this fall they will replace their Kristaps Porzingis mural with a new Mavs concept.

A neighborhood retiree found a new calling writing children’s books during the pandemic
Anne Worth has written a memoir and co-written six books in the past, but the pandemic inspired her to try writing for children.
10 lakehighlands.advocatemag.com SEPTEMBER 2022
“Every morning, at 4 a.m., I woke up to sit in front of my computer.”Herbook series, Tessie’s Tears , follows a young girl, Tessie, as she experiences and learns about death, grief and other forms of loss. The first two installments in the series are Grampy Goes to Heaven and Molly Moves Away
Story by RAVEN JORDAN | Photo by CAMI BARCLAY
fter a 40-year career spent counseling adults, Lake Highlands resident Dr. Anne Worth made a life shift, jolted in part by a pandemic. At 80, she’s already published two children’s books since COVID-19 changed the world, and she has a third on the way. After retiring from counseling and moving to the community at the Landon, she has been writing consistently. She rises well before dawn each day to write.

“That’s one reason I think I was such a good therapist, because I have been through all that stuff myself.”
QUOTE TODAY!
Since publishing the first two books, she has donated books to schools and churches.Though she has no biological children, Worth claims many as her own, including Sudanese girls she’s met since working with the Lost Girls of Sudan and a Russian son (she met him during a mission trip when he was in an orphanage). They all call her “Mama Anne.”
This isn’t her first time to write a book, she says. She has co-authored six works with other authors and wrote a memoir in 2019 titled Call Me Worthy , on which she spent nine agonizing months, she says. In the memoir, she addresses difficulties regarding divorce, abortion, alcohol and her family.
The third book in the Tessie’s Tears series, Corkie the Rescue Puppy is about Tessie losing her puppy. It will be released Nov. 19. 469.983.1060 TreeServicesDallas.com
However, Worth’s foray into children’s books was the result of faith, sympathizing with children who had lost loved ones to COVID and some of her own life events.

Each of the books has references to the Bible and addresses grief and loss from a religious perspective. A couple in the Philippines illustrated the book for her. They held their meetings on character design over Zoom. “I sent him a picture of me as a young girl and the other little girls would be based on my girls,” she says. “So, we sketched a couple of different classes and sketched it right in front of me.”
“During the pandemic, every child in the world, not just in the United States, was exposed to death. if it wasn’t somebody in their family, it was somebody in their neighborhood or one of their friends or whatever,” Worth says. “I wanted children to know that when someone who knows the Lord dies, they go to Heaven, they have a new healthy body.”

When first approached about opening a second Doce Mesas here at The Hill, a busy development just off Central Expressway, Rodriguez says he was skeptical. He imagined something more intimate, with the neighborhoodcafe feel that defined his earlier concepts such as the first Doce Mesas, opened in 2018 on McKinney. But when he finally checked out the space at 9810 N. Central Expy. #600, former home to Red, Hot & Blue BBQ, he felt theWhenpotential.hetoured it, he liked the back patio, which housed a miniature amphitheater fit for, say, acoustic guitarists and flamenco dancers. Behind the stage, and a director’s chair marked “MICO,” hangs a projector screen where he plans to display digital art during the dinner shift. After a pause, Rodriguez agrees he is as much an artist and creative as he is a businessman. “But isn’t food art? And, even better, it is art that everyone enjoys,” he says.

september 2022 lakehighlands.advocatemag.com 17 FOLLOWING A WEEKDAY LUNCH RUSH AT HIS NEWEST RESTAURANT DOCE MESAS on Walnut Hill, esteemed restaurateur Michael “Mico” Rodriguez sits on the back patio chatting with chefs and other staffers. It’s 100 degrees, but the man who founded Mi Cocina 20 years ago is dressed head-to-toe in white, flashing a brilliant smile and looking quite cool, both in the literal and poetic sense. Inside, several late lunchers spread out among 120 or so whiteclothed tables, and line cooks in crisp white uniforms are visible through the open-concept kitchen’s window as they hum behind a neat row of tortilla chips in angular (white) containers.

His uniquely capable staff is to thank for that, he says. And he is on the floor almost every shift, using his finely tuned hospitality senses to intuit diners’ needs. Stellar service is a Rodriguezpriority. says our neighborhood has become a gathering place where you go out to a restaurant “and you know you are going to see everyone, your friends, people you know.” People stay in the neighborhood to dine these days, he points out. They don’t want to drive.
Rodriguez has a storied history within the Dallas restaurant environment, having built a bona fide Tex-Mex empire from his small 12-table restaurant in the ’90s, assuming a pivotal role with the MCrowd restaurant group and establishing sundry eateries across our city and its suburbs. After departing the organization with which he was formerly associated, Rodriguez says he spent some time solo and started imagining this warm and vivid space. He was at the time not sure what would come of these ideas.

The menu at Doce Mesas includes shared plates like shrimp cocktail and ceviche and a variety of enchilada and combination dishes. Prices range from about $19-$40.
“I just didn’t know what I would do with it.” What came of it is a 120-seat, “intimate and upscale yet accessible” (as he puts it) venue with “a California coastal vibe,” a “breezy indoor-outdoor flow” and a robust menu featuring chilled ceviche replete with fresh fat Gulf shrimp, cheddary charred chili relleno or deep-fried chicken thigh on challah and a crispy ensalada topped with grilledRathermeat.than having one chef design the menu, it was a collaborative effort, he says. Piper, also known by her show name, Woodbe’s Sunny Sundae Sensation, has an acupuncturist and chiropractor. She gets regular blood work and X-rays done to ensure she is in the best health.
“They probably get taken care of better than we take care of ourselves,” says owner Charlene Chaney. “Because they’re really athletes, the conditioning part is very, very important.”Pipercompetes throughout the country with whippets, a British breed loosely re lated to greyhounds. Adelaide and Briggs are members of the Lone Star Retriever Club, a club that trains dogs to compete in hunting competitions. They made friends, trained and fell in love with the idea of competing. There, Briggs met neighbor Larry Lauck, who helped him train Adelaide. Almost every night, Briggs, Lauck and Adelaide meet near White Rock Lake to practice three or four commands and tasks. Turns out Adelaide is a hunting dog.

“Each dog is competing against himself,” Briggs says. The competition life is still a bit new to Adelaide and Briggs, but they enjoy it and intend to continue.
“She has some ribbons. We’ve not taken it as far as all the way to the champion level, but she has won some ribbons,” Briggs says. “And we’re proud of her for that. In fact, we have them on my refrigerator right now.”

“Training Adelaide was much like having a child. When they compete and they do what you ask them to do and they go out and they retrieve the bumper and they follow your command, it’s like a father standing on the sideline, watching his son at a baseball game throwing the first pitch. It’s very rewarding and very exciting,” BriggsAdelaidesays.competes in hunting shows, where they chase different birds. “In a competition like this, it simulates the hunting experience as much as possible for the dog. It’s a way for the dog to get out and in and test their skills,” Briggs says. They practice with both live and dead birds and bumpers. At competition, Briggs is the handler and commander.

The club trains dogs to compete in hunting competitions.HemetLabrador retriever Ellie and Llewellin setter Dover as puppies. Dover is recognized by the American Kennel Club as an English settler. Lauck knew he wanted them to par ticipate in hunting competitions. The dogs have been training and competing for close to a decade.
Ellie’s first competition was one to“Sheremember.comeswithin 10 yards for me. And then you have a judge right there scoring you. And you have about 50 people behind you watching you. Ellie stops, sees all those people, she has a duck in her mouth, while she wants to go show off. She takes off, runs in front of everyone in front of the whole gallery showing off,” Lauck says. It didn’t bother him too much. He knows each puppy needs time to learn.“Itusually goes back to confidence and drills and training and showing them over and over and over again,” Lauck says. “It’s repetition just like us. You learn something in school, and then route for the summer. And teachers have to remind everyone what they just learned when they get back to school.
Lauck has developed trust with Ellie and Dover as their owner and han dler.“It’s critical that you and your dog develop that relationship, where you’re both acting together as a team, because he or she will trust you,” Lauck says. On the field, Lauck learned the boundaries of Ellie and Dover and how to properly push them to per form their best. “Many times it’s similar to raising children,” Lauck says. “If you push them too far, they lose confidence, especially when they’re young. So you have to make sure they maintain that level of competence.”
“They are so proud of themselves. They just want to show off. And they’re puppies. And you got to re spect that they’re still puppies. And they’re proud that they’re able to please you.”

It’s hard to be certain without meeting notes, but Jung says the White Rock Lake Task Force began meeting in 1997. Mary Poss, who was the District 9 City Council member at the time, and Gary Griffith, District 9 Dallas Park and Recreation Board member, convened the meetings.

Throughout the ’90s, several projects were coming together at the lake — a master plan, a shoreline tree enhancement plan and a dredging feasibility study among them.
Four years later, Jung wrote another letter. This time it was to Frank Wise, who was director of the Dallas Park and Recreation Department. Jung suggested monthly meetings with representatives of neighborhood associations surrounding the park, and Wise agreed with the idea, Jung says. But again, nothing happened.

In the letter, Jung mentioned a citizen advisory committee to help manage White Rock Lake Park. Nothing came of it.

n 1984, East Dallas neighbor Michael Jung wrote a letter to then-city council member Craig Holcomb about issues at White Rock Lake Park. One fresh on his mind was the “unmitigated disaster” of the Fourth of July fireworks display held at the park the year prior. Someone on the west side of the lake had a heart attack and died; first responders were unable to reach the person because of the crowds and traffic congesting the streets.

“If there had been an advisory committee before that, they would have said, that’s a ridiculous idea — find some other place,” Jung says.
“And each one of those had a citizen advisory committee, which tended to have a lot of overlap in the membership,” Jung says. “So that was kind of the lead up to establishing the task force as a group that would meet periodically without being associated with some specific project.”
In all, around 10-20 people met at a conference room space near the Doran Circle building to discuss matters surrounding White Rock Lake Park. Several people involved in the early years, including Jung, who represented the White Rock Neighborhood Association, and wildlife expert Becky Rader, are still“Wemembers.hearthe concerns from the community, and those concerns are shared with the City,” says Rader, who at one point was both president of the task force and the District 9 park board member. New bylaws were adopted in 2013, changing the structure of the task force. It became a collective of private civic organizations that continued to interact with the City but was not dependent on the City for its existence. Crowder is widely recognized in TV shows as Candy’s attorney, but he had never practiced criminal law prior to the Montgomery case. Much of the footwork fell to Udashen, the firm’s only criminal law specialist. Today the Udashen Anton firm near Park and Central boasts a roster of respected criminal defense attorneys, and Udashen — after a long career that included decades of teaching at Southern Methodist University — has semi-retired to North Carolina. The Candy case, which captured the public interest 40 years ago (the book Evidence of Love and its made-for-TV movie came out in the ’80s), is still captivating audiences.
WHAT MOST BOTHERED YOU? That’s hard to narrow down. Some of the things — with Don Crowder, the lead lawyer, for example. He kind of Interview by CHRISTINA HUGHES
ROBERT UDASHEN WAS 27 in 1980 when he was called in by the partners at Crowder and Mattox law firm to strategize one of the most highprofile and legally intriguing defense cases in Texas history. Alongside the late Don Crowder and associate Elaine Carpenter, Udashen successfully argued self defense for Candy Montgomery, the wife of a Texas Instruments engineer who axed her lover’s wife Betty Gore to death with a reported 41 blows.
Hulu’s five-part series Candy starring Jessica Biel is available now. HBO’s Love and Death, due for a fall 2022 release, is based on Texas Monthly’s “Love and Death in Silicone Prairie.” (Silicone Prairie refers to the Lake Highlands and Richardson corridor where large technology corporations such as Texas Instruments are located.) Udashen has consulted on both shows and has appeared in episodes of Snapped and People Magazine Investigates The last surviving member of the legal team, Udashen speaks with the Advocate from his house in Asheville.
WHAT DID HULU’S CANDY GET RIGHT AND WRONG? There are a lot of things, particularly around the trial, that are not quite accurate. For the series, they had to condense the trial. But it gives you a misleading impression of what happened at the trial. Some of that is just artistic license. And they’re condensing everything all together. But being someone who actually participated in it, I don’t like to see it portrayed inaccurately.

‘Silicone Prairie’ death thrust rookie attorney Robert Udashen into the spotlight
WHY IS EVERYONE STILL SO ENGROSSED IN THIS CASE? It’s a really interesting story. You’ve got an affair. An ax murderer, which is unusual. It’s involving two women, which is unusual. So there’s the makings of a good movie or TV show in there. Why it’s all coming back right now, I don’t know.

WAS THE JUDGE (TOM RYAN) AS BIASED AS PORTRAYED IN CANDY, AND WAS DON REALLY ARRESTED FOR CONTEMPT?
HOW ABOUT THE HBO SHOW?
SEEMS LIKE JUDGE RYAN AND OTHERS WERE WORKING AGAINST YOU — WAS THAT SO? We had to deal with a lot. For example, once they got a warrant for Candy, I negotiated an agreement with the district attorneys, and I drove her up to McKinney. I was gonna take her to the sheriff’s office and they weren’t supposed to notify the press, because we were just trying not to have a bunch of cameras and reporters there. But there’s all these people. They completely violated their agreement. I turned her in and I made arrangements to have a bondsman post the bond before I ever drove Candy up there. The sheriff wouldn’t take the bond and wouldn’t let her out. Then we had a hearing on that, and we finally got her out. After we get her out, just a matter of two days later, Judge Ryan orchestrates this hearing, which was supposed to be about the gag order. I took Candy up there and the judge does impose a gag order, but then he launches into a hearing on whether Candy’s bond was sufficient. It was clear that the judge, DA and sheriff are all prepared for this hearing. No one bothered to tell me about it. Then they throw Candy in jail again. And then I’m under a gag order and I can’t go talk to the press. Things like that. The whole time we’re working on the case.
I was contacted really early on by writers and producers who I met by Zoom. The writers and I spent a number of hours talking while they were writing the script. And initially this show was supposed to star Elisabeth Moss. So I talked to her on a Zoom call. And then she dropped out. She has so many things goin on. I never actually spoke to Jessica Biel.
WERE YOU THINKING INSANITY DEFENSE AT FIRST? I brought in two psychiatrists. I did want the psychiatrists to look into any kind of mental issue. That was to me just part of documenting what happened. I wanted the doctors to see if they could explain the overkill,
september 2022 lakehighlands.advocatemag.com 29 came off as a caricature. Don really did a fabulous job at trial. To me, the way he was portrayed didn’t really do that justice. They had him doing a lot of the things I actually did. But, at the time, I had been a lawyer for about three years. Don was a senior partner at the firm (Crowder and Mattox), but this was his first criminal defense case. The part in the show where they have Don talking to Candy about what happened that day, that was actually me. I was really involved in the strategy part. HOW DID THE CASE COME TO YOUR FIRM? Don knew Candy from church. They both went to the Methodist church. When Candy first goes to talk to the police, before we’ve been hired, she mentions to Don that the police want to talk to her. He says “you don’t have anything to worry about” so she talks to the police. Then they wanted to talk to her a few days later. When it was clearer that they were looking at her as a suspect, Don told her to come in and see me because I did criminal law. Don wasn’t a criminal defense lawyer. He did civil law. DID YOU KNOW HOW BIG THIS CASE WAS GOING TO BE WHEN THEY CALLED YOU IN? This was 1980, there’s no social media, no Facebook. But what you did have is two daily newspapers, Dallas Morning News and Dallas Times Herald , and then the Fort Worth, Plano, McKinney newspapers, all the local TV stations and they all are competing for stories. So there was something on TV or radio or newspaper everyday for months. I knew it was gonna be big, but I didn’t know how big it would become over the next few months. I remember waking up on one morning seeing this headline on the front page of the Dallas Times Herald: “Lawyer dares police to arrest ax murderer.” I was kind of enjoying talking to press, but I do remember thinking I didn’t really mean to do that. I decided I needed to become a little more careful when choosing my words.
Don was held in contempt twice. It didn’t really happen the way it was depicted in the show. By the time the trial rolled around, we were under a gag order not to talk to the press. But Don, right when the trial started, was standing outside the courthouse talking to the press. So Judge Ryan held him in contempt for that. Then there was an incident that occurred during the trial where Don and Judge Ryan got sideways with each other and he held him in contempt again and threw him in jail at the end of the day, which was something not allowed by Texas law. So I had to go to the Court of Criminal Appeals in Austin to get him out of jail.
I worked with HBO for months. They’re going to do a much more detailed look at the trial, then Candy did. I’ve talked to all the actors involved in the HBO series, and I was there when they were filming scenes and helping try to make the trial scenes as accurate as possible. And maybe there’s always some artistic license involved in this, but HBO did want to be as accurate as possible. And that’s what my role was during the filming, to try to make sure they were.
WHEN CANDY TOLD YOU THE WHOLE STORY — THAT SHE DID IT AND IT WAS IN SELF DEFENSE — WERE YOU SURPRISED? I won’t say I’m surprised at that point. By then I knew she had been there, and I knew that the police had at least a fingerprint. I mean certain things tied her to the scene. But I didn’t really know exactly what happened. And so when she came out and finally told us what happened, to me it was clear that it was self defense. Now we just needed to document and put the defense together.
HOW MUCH DID THE MAKERS OF THE HULU SHOW CONSULT YOU?
HOW DID CANDY’S CASE AFFECT THE TRAJECTORY OF YOUR CAREER? At that point, it was clearly the biggest case I’d ever been in. And it was a great learning experience. I did so many different things in that trial. Most young lawyers never get a chance to do it. I think it put me on a path to be a really successful criminal defense lawyer. I used to, particularly at SMU when I was teaching there, give talks on the many legal issues that came up working on that case that were just fascinating and a great learning experience. So it did kind of propel my career. I was prepared to handle lots of big cases after it. But at the time, I was so young, it was really learning by fire.

absolutedecision.”right
HOW DOES A LAWYER WORKING ON THESE GRUESOME CASES BALANCE THAT OUT EMOTIONALLY IN YOUR LIFE? I don’t have a specific routine, but it could be really crushing. Particularly in something like Candy. Another case that comes to mind is Lisa Diaz, which was capital murder trial where she was accused of killing her two children. When I get cases like these, particularly when I believe the people were really innocent, it’s really stressful. Their lives are at stake and I don’t want to do anything wrong to cause an innocent person to end up in prison. So whenever I can travel, I do. Whenever I finished up a big trial, my wife and I would go take a vacation somewhere to get away and clear my mind. HAVE YOU BEEN IN TOUCH WITH CANDY? I have not talked to her in a long time, and she moved shortly after trial. It was just impossible for her to stay in the area. She couldn’t go to the grocery store without people saying something negative to her.
30 lakehighlands.advocatemag.com SEPTEMBER 2022 because that was always going to be a big problem here. We could see the self defense and how it got started based on what Candy said. But there’s so many blows that I thought by the time we got to trial we’re gonna need to be able to explain why it happened.
september 2022 lakehighlands.advocatemag.com 31
The book Evidence of Love came out a few years after the trial, and Candy did cooperate with that book, and I think she was sorry she did. So did Don Crowder and I. But then after that. They made a movie with Barbara Hershey. Candy would not cooperate with that, and there’s been a bunch of shows since then Candy would not cooperate in.
People want to know where Candy is and if I really think it was self defense, and I really do think it was self defense. I really believe that for these reasons. I mean, I think the jury made the absolute right decision. Even though there was a lot of hostility to that decision. Yeah, I think we got it right. This interview has been edited for space. WHO WERE YOUR ROLE MODELS AS AN ATTORNEY IN DALLAS?
I used to practice with George Milner Jr., who passed away in 2014. I just thought George was just a fine person and a great trial lawyer. So he was really a person that I tried to model myself after. Both Jim (Mattox) and Don (Crowder) were very important. When I first got out of law school, I worked at the prison with inmates. And when I came to Dallas, I was looking for a job — and this is probably something Henry Wade did that helped me in my career — I thought we all go work at the Dallas district attorney’s office. But Wade said, “You strike me more as a criminal defense lawyer rather than a prosecutor.” And he said, “I think you should go talk to my friend, Jim Mattox.” So I went and talked with Jim and Don and they hired me to do all criminal work, so that was really the start of my criminal defense career. S hortly after I moved back to Lake Highlands, my morning walk took me past a rather nondescript building with an unusual sign — the North Texas Hindu Mandir on Baronne Circle. My curiosity was piqued. I hadn’t thought of a Hindu Temple in Dallas. Soon I learned that many of my neighbors were descended from Hindus who came from India via the West Indies decades ago. Their Pandit (teacher and worship leader) worked as an engineer in a local tech firm, and this mandir, or temple, was their spiritualEventuallyhome. I learned that my neighbors included people of many religions, and like the Hindus, they were repurposing churches and shops, or even constructing new buildings, for their worship, education and fellowship.
Further afield was the Buddhist Temple of Dallas, founded by Thai Buddhists, with its classic Thai-style temple tucked into a leafy neighborhood on Stultz Road. Like most Buddhist organizations in Dallas (and there are many), they offer meditation classes and public celebrations of Buddhist holidays accompanied by cultural shows and food booths. Not far north on Greenville Avenue in Richardson is the Sikh Gurdwara Singh Sabha serving Sikhs from much of North Dallas and Richardson. The Sikhs came from the Punjab province in India, where their first gurus taught the unity of all religions and the commonality of all monotheistic religiousContinuingrevelation.north to Centennial Drive, we find the Islamic Association of North Texas, with its mosque, school and medical clinic. It serves the substantial Muslim population in Lake Highlands, Richardson and much of NorthLakeDallas.Highlands is also home to large numbers of migrants from Cuba, Central America, Brazil and Mexico. We tend to assume those from Latin America are Catholic, yet alongside Roman Catholicism are indigenous expressions of religion that have grown up out of the potent interactions between traditional African religions, indigenous American religions and Christianity. So sure enough, I found shops acting as religious centers in the Garland Road area for Santaria (primarily from the Caribbean) and Candomblé (primarily from Brazil). These religions center around home worship, but they’re represented by dealers in ritual objects and fortune tellers who are usually ritual leaders as well. When I was growing up, religion in Lake Highlands meant Christianity, visible from St. Patrick’s Catholic Church at Ferndale and Walnut down to Lake Highlands Presbyterian at Audelia and Northwest Highway. And more than a dozen others around and between. Now, perhaps less visible but very real, are the old, but new to many of us, religions of those who continue to make Lake Highlands a vibrant neighborhood for all of us.

My next discovery was a Bahai center on Plano Road on the way to my favorite donut shop. The Bahai religion was founded in 19th-century Iran but quickly spread worldwide with its message of the unity of all peoples and religions. Persecuted in Iran, Bahais are now found across the globe and have become a multi-ethnic religion.
