For a long time, a friend liked his job. Then he loved it. Now he hates it. Same job. Same boss. Same company. Not the same attitude.
Times change, as we all know. People change. Companies change.
Attitudes change, too.
I thought about this while reading an article in The New Yorker magazine about a university professor who teaches a course on pessimism.
Yes, you read that correct: Students are paying to take a course studying pessimism.
This guy’s theory is that “philosophy begins with disappointment” of two kinds: “The end is near” and “Will this never end?”
Now if you are like a lot of people these days, your mind probably runs to the national political situation, which from both sides of the aisle appears to be pretty stuck in muck. But no, the professor says, that’s not his point.
“To him,” the article says, “it doesn’t matter which Administration is in charge. ‘There’s always something to complain about,’ he said. ‘There has always been a one percent, there’s always been discrimination of people because of their race.’ ’’
So even if politics is the convenient excuse for today’s malaise, to the extent you feel that way, it’s not really a core problem for most of us. We have plenty of other things to worry about and live for, with politics registering on that scale but not tipping it one way or the other.
So how do you go from loving something one day to hating it the next, when to the naked eye, not much has really changed? And to what extent does pessimism impact a life?
It’s a favorite question of mine, and not because I’m enrolling in that college class, either. It’s because it reminds me of a day from my past.
On a long-ago cold, dreary and gray summer day, I went into a doctors’ office believing I had brain cancer. Thirty minutes later, I walked out of the office into hot, bright, blinding sunlight knowing I didn’t.
The day hadn’t changed in 30 minutes, nor had my health. But my attitude was radically different. To all other eyes, the heat and intensity of that typical Dallas summer day hadn’t changed one bit. But to my eyes, what had been dreary had become a bright light directly from heaven, guiding me down a gold-plated pathway.

Weeks and weeks of worry melted away in seconds, even though nothing had actually changed.
Perspective is really a sixth sense, although we don’t give it the credit it deserves. Aristotle’s five senses of the human body — sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch — send measurable information to our brains for processing.
But perspective isn’t measurable. We like and don’t like, believe and don’t believe, hate and don’t hate what we want, sometimes regardless of the truth of the matter.
We like our jobs; we’re sick of them. We adore our friends; we loathe them. We respect ourselves; we hate us.
As with so many things, there can be a fine line between the two.

Expect quite a few distraught neighbors when Reggie Baker retires from Lake Highlands Automotive. Some customers already won’t have their cars serviced if Baker isn’t at the shop.
“Because I’ve worked on their cars for the last 30 years, we built up a trust,” he says.
Baker is slowly winding down his lengthy career in the auto industry. He’s a constant in our ever-evolving neighborhood. As retail and residential development erupted from farmland, Baker’s businesses remained the same.
Baker was a neighborhood staple before he bought Lake Highlands Automotive in 2003. He was raised here, and he married his high school sweetheart, Tanya, who he courted at Dairy Queen. As a 17-yearold, Baker was hired to pump gas at Lakeridge Texaco, which T.L. Nieman and his son, Tim, then owned.
The no-frills gas station at the corner of Kingsley and Audelia roads included several full-service pumps and a garage for repairs. There were no lottery tickets or snacks offered, except for Christmas when Nieman doled out eggnog, Old Forester’s whiskey, apples and oranges to customers.
Nieman was an eccentric character, says Doug Dallafior, who worked with Baker at Lakeridge Texaco for several years and eventually joined him at Lake Highlands Automotive.
“In my eyes, they weren’t future-oriented,” Dallafior says. “Reggie advanced it into the future.”
Baker purchased the gas station in 1989. His sons,
Jordon and Jared, mopped floors, pumped gas and painted curbs for a small paycheck.
Baker managed to maintain the old-school Texaco until Wendy’s bought the property 15 years ago. The closure turned into a blessing for Baker, he says. Days after he learned he’d lose the property, he received a call asking if he’d buy Lake Highlands Automotive.
Now Baker, Jordon and his childhood best friend, Adam Tharp, manage the business’ day-to-day operations.
Texaco memorabilia lines shelves at the auto shop’s office. Baker and Dallafior can rattle off a myriad of personalities they’ve served, from Mr. Peppermint to Purple Heart recipient Earl Tweed and an odd fellow who removed phone numbers from signage around town.
Jordon never envisioned he’d work in the auto industry, much less with his father. But he has a knack for mechanics; both Baker and Dallafior consider him the most talented.
“Even nowadays, I respect his opinion and input,” Jordon says. “How can I correct someone who’s been doing this for 30 years?”

HIGHWAY TO HELL OR HEAVEN?
anks to local activists, LBJ East is being updated. But will it be better?
By ANDY SHAW | Photos by DANNY FULGENCIO
Bill Clinton was president when Lake Highlands leaders first began dreaming of a glorious new LBJ Freeway. Those ambitious planners named the new road “LBJ Ultimate.”
Twenty years passed, with negotiations and meetings. Eventually, some privately hoped they could just achieve “LBJ Anything-But-This.”
A handful of the original dreamers are still around, and a new generation of fed-up motorists joined them. Now this volunteer squad appears to have pulled off a moon shot. They have the money — about $1.6 billion. They have a plan.
And if we hang on for six or seven more years, engineers say we should be able to average 50 mph at rush hour along the 11 miles of Interstate 635 between U.S. Highway 75 and Interstate 30.
This stretch of interstate, now known by the modest handle “LBJ East,” will have more free lanes and one or two express lanes to soak up some of the excess traffic. Continuous frontage roads will replace the fragmented patchwork of access roads that confuse today’s drivers and render a lot of prime real estate worthless for business development.
Many in Lake Highlands consider the crown jewel of the project to be the
Skillman Gateway, an arched bridge that will flow into an all-new interchange and straighten out the bewildering maze where Audelia and Skillman meet.
Concrete pillars supporting sounddamping walls are popping up near homes that back up to LBJ. Homeowners have been begging for these walls for years, desperate for some relief from the droning roar of traffic.
A few of the project’s champions reflected on the bruising journey that brought us to this point. And they recall, most important, their delighted amazement as a platoon of rookie civic activists joined them at the eleventh hour.
LBJ East should be revamped by 2020.

“It was the community getting active and fighting for what is most important to them and just watching it,” Dallas City Councilman Adam McGough says. “For me, it was a beautiful thing.”
WHAT DO WE GET?
Susan Morgan, neighbor who worked 20 years on planning the Skillman Gateway: It will give us the continuous frontage roads, which are essential to new economic development coming in to the area.
Adam McGough: The sound walls are going up as we speak, right now. That alone is a huge victory for our neighbors.
Michael Morris, transportation director, North Central Texas Council of Governments: Part of LBJ’s problem is the interchanges are all at the wrong locations. So all that’s being fixed. As it is today, if you want to go east-to-west on the frontage road, you’re forced to get on the freeway.
Susan Morgan: How many places do you know with traffic counts in the area of 250,000 per day in one direction and 50,000 in the other direction, and Starbucks can’t survive?
Michael Morris: It’s kind of like when Central Expressway was built. Central Expressway didn’t have continuous frontage roads. So all those short trips that used to get on the freeway are now on the frontage roads. And that’s going to happen on LBJ.
WHAT’S NEXT?
The construction crews will work from west to east, ending at I-30, for six years before it’s complete. Forms, sketches and plans are moving back and forth, and we’re not close to the day that contractors can bid on the job. The Texas Department of Transportation says we won’t even see dirt fly until late 2019.
Adam McGough: The priority is that the [Skillman Gateway] goes first as soon as we possibly can, but there’s no way to know what the timeline will be on the bridge itself.
WHY THE HOLD UP?
McGough and City Councilman Lee Kleinman hope they can speed up construction, perhaps as soon as mid-2019. The project was stalled in December 2017 when Gov. Greg Abbott kept a campaign promise: no new Texas toll roads.
Kathy Stewart, executive director of Lake Highlands Public Improvement District: The problem we had was the primaries coming up and the election
year, and the promises that our officials made to their constituents that there would be no new tolls.
Susan Morgan: I started out building a bridge, and I inherited a freeway. The freeway plans had been on the books since the mid-’90s, where we had the community approving this approach with the optional managed toll lanes. So that was pretty shocking.
Adam McGough: TxDOT told us, look, if you wanted us to take LBJ and build 20 lanes, if they’re all free lanes and we don’t have a way to manage them, all we’ll be doing is building a 20-lane parking lot.
WHAT IS LBJ NOW?
they were scared, and they were anxious about what they were going to say, but they did it. Because they felt compelled to. Even now it gives me goose bumps.
Kathy Stewart: When you see that kind of commitment to give our neighborhood a voice, that’s just awesome.
Brad McCutcheon: Even after they had taken it off the table, we kept showing up. We kept making respectful comments. I think they realized pretty quickly that this group of people were not elected officials, not lobbyists, not professionals. We were just people from the neighborhood, and we weren’t going anywhere.
WHAT’S THE COST OF COMPROMISE?
Five months into the standoff, it was decided that LBJ East could have one optional toll lane, not two.
Adam McGough: One lane is just not smart for congestion management and looking into the future.
Susan Morgan: It is not what the public had asked for. It is not what the public had approved, but we’re willing to go ahead with it.
WHY SUCH OPPOSITION?
Tolls aren’t a major concern for Texas residents, according to Texas Lyceum Polls. So why did it matter so much?
An advocacy group called LBJ Now quickly lit up a social media campaign and began scouting Lake Highlands for foot soldiers. The response energized the faltering campaign.
Brad McCutcheon, firefighter and first-time activist: My main focus was to just spread the word to our friends and neighbors in Lake Highlands.
As soon as you tell people about the project, people are interested. It didn’t make sense to people why that project would have been pulled at the last minute. And we just started to gain momentum.
Christie Myers, neighbor, Grow South volunteer and Dallas ISD employee: We started following the traffic reports and really understanding the number of accidents that are actually happening on a daily basis. I mean it really is a huge part of people’s lives every single day.
We went down to Austin every month for those meetings … folks who have never spoken at any kind of public meeting. They were uncomfortable, and
Susan Morgan: The public got very disillusioned with toll roads. For instance, Collin County is bounded on three sides with freeways that you cannot use unless you pay a toll.
Lee Kleinman, Dallas City Council Transportation Committee Chair: The reason we have so many tolling roads in Dallas is because very conservative legislatures 10 or 15 years ago were all about privatization and pay-as-you-go.
Susan Morgan: And now they’ve changed their minds and said “no tolls,” and we continue to have inadequate road building in Texas.
Adam McGough: As we pay the roads that are currently tolled off and move on to other projects, let’s convert some of those lanes back to free lanes. I would totally support that, but leave the option of tolling as a mechanism for managing the traffic.
Susan Morgan: Much of the community is still disappointed in the leadership in Austin for having put us through this. They confuse the issue with their rhetoric because their focus is on campaigning. You can’t adequately address the intricacies of transportation in a campaign slogan.
16 lakehighlands.advocatemag.com AUGUST 2018
Susan Morgan: Getting the bridge will be excellent, getting the continuous frontage road will be excellent, getting the increase in the extra lanes is going to be excellent, and keeping that one optional managed (toll) lane is sufficient for now.
Adam McGough: I’d say a solid B that could either turn into an A, or could drop down to a C-minus depending upon how this thing ends up over the next couple of years. The really special part about this has been the community engagement in this process. Because without that, we’re not even sitting here talking about it.
Motivated by LBJ NOW? Here’s other ways to get involved in Lake Highlands.
Kathy Stewart: One of the most important things is to become involved in what is happening in your life at that moment. If you have children in school, get involved in PTA, their sports activities, the booster club, whatever it is. If you live in a neighborhood that you love, get on the board of your neighborhood association. Contribute your time and your energy to making your neighborhood strong. Be a part of crime watch. Be a part of the VIP program.
Brad McCutcheon: Develop a relationship with the elected officials who represent you, your city council person, state rep or senator, even your congressman, depending on the issue. Try to develop a relationship with their office. Don’t just start off attacking them on social media, because you’re never going to insult anybody into agreeing with you.
Christie Myers: If there is something that you are personally passionate about, that matters at a legislative level — and most things do — reach out to your city councilmember. You just have to do it.
Brad McCutcheon: Find as many people as you can who agree with you and who you can motivate to support the cause. There’s a tipping point for every issue. And the more you can quantify the support you’ve got, the closer you get to that tipping point, and the more likely they will be to listen to you.
Kathy Stewart: If you’re passionate and you want to be involved, you have to start engaging. And “engaging” doesn’t mean being a critic on social media. You can absolutely speak up and voice your opinion on social media. But that alone is not how to become involved. You have to couple that with some hard work, getting to know people — work with people and not just fuss at people.

n Sunday afternoon, Oct. 11, 2015, Zoe Hastings was on her way to church for a class about becoming a missionary. After returning a movie to the Walgreens at Peavy and Garland Road, she went missing. When she didn’t show up for her class, friends and family began to search for the Booker T. Washington theater student. Hastings’ parents stayed up all night trying to get ahold of her and tracked her phone to Dixon Branch near Lochwood. When they arrived, a crowd had gathered, and police were taping off the crime scene. Their worst nightmare came true. Her body and the family vehicle were found down a ravine. She was sexually assaulted, stabbed and left in the creek bed.
How do parents respond to the loss none should have to experience? How does a best friend progress through life while remembering and honoring her lost companion? How does family support the parents while dealing with their own grief?
Nearly three years after Zoe’s death, the life she led and the impact she had on the people around her is evident each day, a living testament to a life cut too short.
lakehighlands.advocatemag.com AUGUST 2018 23
How her murder shaped the lives around her
Father Jim Hastings: Drawing through pain
When Zoe died, Jim Hastings had been appointed as bishop of their church. He helped balance the budget, sat up front and taught during services, and he spent one night a week at the 500-member church helping others work through their problems.
“If I had nothing to do, it would have been terrible,” he says. “It took me out of what I was dealing with to know there are other things happening in the world.”
But he couldn’t continue helping others without finding a way to deal with his own emotions. After Zoe died, her father decided to draw every day. He is an art teacher at Merriman Park Elementary in Lake Highlands, and he has painted murals all over Dallas and illustrated several books.
He committed to drawing a picture of one of his family members every day. The other Hastings children are Hannah, 18, Tristan, 15, Ruby, 11, and Olive, 5.
Since then he has made more than 900 drawings of family members, all in simple ballpoint pen, but the emotional range and power of the drawings (which can be found on Instagram @jhastings40) is captivating.
He kept the practice up when his mother was diagnosed with cancer last year, sketching her each day until she died six weeks later. His father died a few months before Zoe.
Drawing helped Jim realize how much he still has left, and it inspired him to make sure he uses his time productively.
“I see drawings, and they take me to a certain point in life,” he says. “They definitely helped me focus any anxiety, nervousness, worry or whatever. Life doesn’t stop. It was a way for me to keep moving forward. If I didn’t start making pictures, I might stop completely.”
(Left to right) Cheryl, Olive, Ruby, Hannah and Jim Hastings in their home.
Mother Cheryl Hastings: Nursing through recovery
Cheryl Hastings put her education on hold to have a family, and she became a nurse after the birth of her third child.
She works in labor and delivery at Parkland hospital and was on her way to getting a master’s degree to be a midwife when Zoe was murdered.
In her grief, Cheryl found a new purpose.
She saw an advertisement for the need for sexual assault nurse examiners. With additional training, nurses can examine women who’ve been sexually assaulted, preserving evidence for trial. They can even testify as expert witnesses.
For a mother whose daughter was sexually assaulted before she was murdered, this was an interesting choice. Cheryl says she even surprised herself a bit.
“I thought, ‘I don’t want to do that. Well maybe I do want to do that,’ ” she says.
The role is an important but undesirable one, requiring a balancing act of attention to detail, empathy and emotional distance.
“These people need someone who can help them in that step to recovery,” Cheryl says. “A little voice inside me said try it. They could use you.”
Friend Beppy Gietema: Holding on to Zoe
When Beppy Gietema graduated from Booker T., she and Zoe took a three-week trip to the Netherlands. The two friends listened to music and danced in the aisles of the plane while everyone was asleep, setting the tone for an eventful trip.
Spontaneity and joy drew Beppy to Zoe in the first place. They went to renaissance fairs and made movies together, listened to reggae on the way to Torchy’s Tacos and left googly eyes on hot sauce bottles.
Beppy, who attends the Savannah College of Art and Design, started getting calls and text messages the day her best friend went missing. Finally she got ahold of Zoe’s mom, who told her that Zoe was dead.
“The words will never leave me,” she says. “They are crisp in my mind.”
When she learned of Zoe’s death, Beppy cut off her ponytail, which she keeps in a box of letters and pictures of the two of them. Zoe’s death crushed Beppy’s spirit.
“She was the first person that I lost that I really loved,” she says. “I lost half of myself.”
Beppy is off at college, but moving on from the memory of her friend is not something she wants to do.
“I don’t know how you can move on. I don’t want to leave her in my past. I want to bring her with me wherever I can.”

Uncle Nick Hastings: Comforted by community
Nick Hastings saw Zoe almost weekly growing up. He says she was the first one to jump up and give you a hug but also the one to ask how you were doing, a maturity and selflessness beyond her years.
Through Sunday dinners and babysitting his children, Nick got to know Zoe as young woman who was excited for life. Nick wanted his children to be around Zoe, knowing her authentic generosity of spirit would rub off on them.
When his niece died, Nick was part of the team that canvassed the neighborhood in hopes of finding Zoe’s killer. He was astounded when 300 people showed up to help. Nick lives in the neighborhood as well, and he says he was shocked that something so violent could happen in what he considers a safe place, especially in broad daylight.
Nick says he became a bit more diligent about watching out, more skeptical, perhaps a little less trusting of the world around him. He had conversations with his kids about engaging strangers and being aware of their surroundings.
While it was a trying time, Nick also learned to experience life a bit more deeply.
“It’s not necessarily what you want to tell your kids, but we realized that life is short,” he says. “Enjoy as much time as you have with people.”
Nick feels that Zoe’s murder brought the family together and made them trust in their faith.
“Although we don’t understand everything, we have faith that God is there,” he says. “We spend a few more minutes on our knees thanking God for the time we have.”
CRIMINAL UPDATE: ANTONIO COCHRAN, 37, was convicted of the murder of Zoe Hastings and sentenced to life in prison in January 2018. Though the Dallas County District Attorney sought the death penalty for capital murder, Cochran was ruled intellectually disabled, so he was convicted of a lesser charge of murder.
Cochran will be eligible for parole in 30 years.

Lawsuit: RISD board held ‘meetings in secret’
Story by CAROL TOLER
A NEW LAWSUIT accuses the Richardson ISD board of meeting in secret, a violation of Texas open meetings laws that resulted in more than 500 unanimous votes over a span of seven years.
Former RISD trustee David Tyson Jr. filed the suit in July.
The lawsuit alleges that trustees met in groups of two or three while corresponding with other trustees by text, email or phone until a consensus was reached. RISD has seven trustees, so a meeting of four makes a quorum, which would make that arrangement illegal under the Texas Open Meetings Act.
In an action the lawsuit calls “brazen,” Tyson accuses the trustees of deleting their electronic communication from those alleged meetings in order to leave any trail “purposefully concealed and forever lost.”
Subsequent public board meetings were merely a “rubber-stamp formality,” Tyson alleges. “Votes that appear swift and uncontested” were in truth “choreographed behind the scenes.”
In the past seven years, only three school board votes were not unanimous. Eron Linn voted against
the proposed tax ratification election and the budget in June, and Justin Bono voted “no” to the proposed nontraditional high school in 2015.
The lawsuit seeks a court order to prevent board members from skirting open meetings laws and to void all actions based on any violations.
Tyson served on the board from 2004-2010. He is the only minority ever to serve as an RISD trustee and has criticized the board’s whiteness in a district that is culturally and racially diverse.
He sued RISD in January claiming the district’s at-large system of electing trustees violates the Voting Rights Act of 1965 because it denies fair representation to minority voters. That case is pending.
State law requires that meetings of a governmental body must be open to the public. Tyson claims RISD’s secret sessions “have denied the public the opportunity to participate in the democratic process.”
Brewer Storefront is representing Tyson in both lawsuits. That firm previously has won voting rights cases against the Carrollton-Farmers Branch, Grand Prairie and Irving school districts, as well as against the cities of Farmers Branch and Irving.
“Votes that appear swift and uncontested” were in truth “choreographed behind the scenes.”

EDUCATION
Richardson ISD trustees voted to postpone the school district’s previouslycalledtax ratification election (TRE)until November. Merging the vote with the general election, they said, will encourage higher voter participation and save hundreds of thousands of dollars. The delay will give RISD officials more time to inform community members about reasons for requesting the property tax increase. “

How does prayer work?
No one knows how prayer works or why. Some wonder if it works at all, and if it does, what “works” means.
Jesus talked about prayer in simple teachings and parables and analogies. For instance, he emphasized the need to keep at it. “Ask and it shall be given to you, seek and you shall find, knock and the door will be opened to you,” he said.
Each of the verbs should be translated as continuous action — keep on asking, seeking and knocking. He teased us with a parable about a man who disturbs the sleep of his neighbor and family in the middle of the night and a woman who nags an unjust judge until he gives in to get her off his back. He compared our heavenly Father’s desire to give us good things to an earthly father’s desire to do the same, only more so.
Here’s another image, this time from the world of grandparenting.
My 16-month-old grandson, Whit, is never without an implement in hand: spoon, stick, wooden backscratcher, plastic golf club or his personal favorite — the TV remote control. It’s more than just having the remote in his hand, though; he has caught on to the power of the remote to make things happen.
Children are copycats. They watch what we do and emulate it. They grow up by practicing being grownups. So, Whit not only holds the remote and waves it around, he points it at the TV and presses buttons, expecting something to happen the way it does when the adults in his life do the same.
Since he doesn’t know what buttons to push, I get tired of having to reset the TV after all his attempts to turn on Paw Patrol or The Golf Channel (really!) have thrown the TV menu into chaos. So, we took the batteries out of a remote and labeled it
“Whit.” He now can wave and point and click without consequence.
He is old enough to see that some power has left him. Amid his disappointment, he tried harder until I couldn’t stand it any longer. I got the working remote in hand and stood behind him as he clicked, operating the TV according to what I think he would have wanted, and certainly according to what I wanted for him. He was delighted to feel his powers return.

Prayer is a team effort. Each of us — often many of us — joins God in focusing on the changes we desire. We have limited power to achieve these things on our own. God seems to honor our efforts by coming behind us with greater power to achieve outcomes God was not likely to initiate without our prompting, but always according to God’s greater knowledge of the greater good.
No analogy is perfect. This still doesn’t account for why some fervent prayers seem to go unanswered. But if a grandfather can’t stand to disappoint a grandson’s efforts for change, how much more so a good God for God’s children?
GEORGE MASON is pastor of Wilshire Baptist Church, president of Faith Commons and host of the “Good God” podcast. The Worship section is underwritten by Advocate Publishing and the neighborhood businesses and churches listed here. For information about helping support the Worship section, call 214.560.4202.
