Get your Dilly Bar fix soon

Hankering for a fudge sundae?

Dying for a Dilly Bar? Dairy Queen announced plans to open a restaurant in Lake Highlands. The ice cream shop’s “coming soon” sign went up on the shuttered Chicken Express at 6445 Eastridge next to the Skillman Home Depot, and renovation is expected to begin soon.

The chaos-causing, ‘yippie-type characters’ of 1969

In 1969, men walked on the moon, troops returned from Vietnam and rock ‘n’ roll radiated from a hay field in New York. Meanwhile, a handful of Lake Highlands students infuriated their parents and school officials so much that they made the news. “11 Suspended from Lake Highlands” reads the headline of a Dallas Morning News article published Sept. 25 of that year. The incident began one Tuesday morning at what

Wildcat football faces new foes

You’d think Wildcat head football coach Lonnie Jordan hadn’t read the sports page. Speaking about the new UIL alignment and the school’s move to 8-6A, he was all competitive enthusiasm and confidence, despite facing powerhouse schools like Duncanville (5,000 students) and Dallas ISD magnet Skyline (4,700) this fall. “We love where we are, and we love who we are,” Jordan told Exchange Club members at their annual football season kickoff. “Duncanville is projected to be one of the top 5 teams in the state, and Skyline is double our size, but we expect to be up at the top.” Lake Highlands plays Mesquite in our first home game Aug. 31 at 7:30 p.m.

is now Lake Highlands North Park. Wearing “hippie dress,” the Dallas Morning News reported, five SMU students organized a “ ‘teach-in on the relevance of clothing and hair to academic matters.’ ” Students also doled out pamphlets protesting the high school’s dress code. About 40 students congregated at the park for the teach-in that Wednesday. Eleven teens played hooky afterward. Needless to say, authorities were not pleased with the rebellious youths’ shenanigans. The highschoolers received indefinite suspension, and SMU’s “yippietype characters” ended up in jail. “I just don’t know what’s happening to our kids today,” one parent told the Dallas Morning News.

DOCTORS TOLD SUNNY POLITO her son, Campbell, wouldn’t walk or speak. They said he was unteachable.

Campbell’s regressive autism caused him to lose developmental milestones like feeding himself and talking when he was 18 months old.

“Our journey has been about ‘let’s prove them wrong,’ ” Polito says.

Hope — a black labradoodle — has been instrumental in Campbell’s progress. The capable autism service dog received $18,000 worth of training to help kids who struggle interacting with the world. She accompanies therapist Dalton Pfiffner at Lakewood’s Therapeutic Movements, an occupational and physical therapy practice that works with a wide range of children, many of whom are on the autism spectrum like Campbell.

“He is comfortable talking to others, engaging with other people, comfortable talking about the dog,” Polito says. “Dalton has phenomenal insight. She helps him communicate with people and teaches life skills.”

Hope originally had a job with the Golden family, but she was so effective that she worked herself into unemployment. She

assisted Gray Golden, who struggled leaving the house with his family, as he was known to run away, throw himself on the ground or lash out at others.

She provided an anchor for Gray, steadying him emotionally and physically. She was tethered to him and stood firm when he tried to run or lose control. Eventually, Gray no longer needed Hope to be out in the world, and Hope returned to being a pet.

But she was despondent. She bummed around the house lazily while everyone else was at school or work, her previously engaged mind listless.

One day, she sprinted out of the house and jumped in the car uninvited, eager to catch a ride somewhere and just do something.

They thought about returning her so she could help another child, but she was a member of the family by this point. Pfiffner had been Gray’s therapist for a number of years, and one day asked if the family thought Hope could have a career at the clinic.

“She would love to go back to work,” said Rhoni Golden, Gray’s mother.

Now Pfiffner picks up Hope a few days a week and takes her to the clinic, where she has a number of roles. She helps create distractions if children become upset, blowing in their face or rolling on her back. She also accompanies children on outings into the community, as Pfiffner works with them on interacting with strangers and other life skills.

“She laughs; I feel comfortable, feel good,” Campbell says of Hope. “She makes me crazy, crazy in a good way.”

Hope provides a conversation piece for the children. They can talk to others about the dog rather than themselves, which is an important aid for children who struggle with interpersonal communication and social norms. Hope accompanies her clients on trips to Starbucks or Whole Foods, where they chat with employees.

“Dogs provide a way to be connected. They don’t expect anything. They are not asking him to do anything, but give so much back,” Polito says. “A dog doesn’t care if he doesn’t look him in the eyes.”

Lake Highlands resident Colby Jones was a bit befuddled after learning his former employee was the frontman of a band named, of all things, the Butthole Surfers.

Jones, who hired Gibby Haynes in the 1970s, had no idea the neighborhood native had even an ounce of musical talent.

“You’re immediately put off by the name. What, they couldn’t have come up with something different?” Jones says. “I didn’t know he was interested in music.

He was just a kid at the park or a kid who worked for me.”

Jones hired Haynes and a friend to supervise one of Dallas Park and Recreation’s playground summer camps. The citywide program kept kids busy with soccer, softball, crafts and one-act plays.

“Those boys were great,” Jones says. “Sometimes you had to pull the reins in because they were fun-loving guys. You had to be careful and not give them too much freedom. Overall, it was a really good experience.”

Haynes channeled his exuberant energy into the Butthole Surfers, an experimental punk band that was known for members’ zany behavior as much as its chaotic sound. Rolling Stone magazine described Haynes in 1996 as a “hedonistic Texan and ranting front man” who “has made an art of being a drunken and disorderly redneck prone to onstage antics such as breaking bottles on his head and firing a shotgun above his audience.”

But before Haynes made headlines, he was a quick-witted Lake Highlands teen who seemed to be good at everything he attempted. He played football for the Wildcats and was a standout basketball player, something he also pursued at Trinity University.

Haynes was highly competitive, says longtime friend Scott Bevers. When his high school teammates didn’t finish their drills fast enough, Haynes told them, “get your ass moving or you’ll make a mud puddle.”

He also had a knack for theatrics. He helped organize Lake Highlands High’s senior show, wrote several skits and sang in the band Maximillian and the Malignant Marauders.

“It didn’t surprise me he’s in entertainment,” Bevers says.

His father, Jerry Haynes, was an entertainer himself. Clad in a redand-white suit, Haynes —known as Mr. Peppermint — was the beloved children’s show host akin to Mr. Rogers. Haynes told Rolling Stone in 1996 that his dad was “the nicest guy in the world,” and Bevers agrees. His parents often argued, so he was drawn to

16 advocatemag.com
Fall_BTS_Medallion_2018_Summer_Advocate_Ad.indd 1 8/15/18 10:09 AM

how welcoming the Haynes family was, he says.

“They’re the most humble people you’ll ever meet,” he says. “They’d give you the shirt off their back.”

Mr. Peppermint’s reputation was more wholesome than his son’s. But he loved classic rock and got Haynes a job working as an usher for Dallas Memorial Auditorium.

“He saw any show he wanted at an early age,” Bevers says.

As high-schoolers, Bevers and Haynes scored gigs as security guards at Texxas Jam, a rock concert at the Cotton Bowl featuring Aerosmith, Van Halen, Ted Nugent and Heart. The two didn’t do much security work, Bevers recalls, but they did gain instant access to the musicians they admired.

THREE FUN FACTS BEHIND THE BUTTHOLE SURFERS

1.) The first two songs Gibby Haynes wrote were titled “Manic in Hand” and “Broken Mold.”

2.) Initially, the Butthole Surfers changed their name constantly to play bars that already kicked them out. The band’s first gig was at an art gallery in San Antonio, where they played a sixsong collection twice.

3.) Gibby Haynes wrote a children’s story “The Next Big Thing” that Zach Galifianakis narrates. Penguin Random House is set to publish another children’s book by Haynes.

The two teens walked into the bathroom after Neal Schon when Haynes noticed the Journey guitarist forgot his four gold and diamond rings. They chased him down to return them.

“He was so appreciative and made us sit down and eat lunch with the band,” Bevers says.

Years later, Haynes and a few friends started a band in their college dorm. They titled one of the first six songs they wrote, “Butthole Surfers.” That’s what fans nicknamed the upand-coming band, and it stuck.

Jones, despite being baffled, earned cool points as a dad because of Haynes. His son’s favorite thing to tell his peers was, “Gibby Haynes with the Butthole Surfers worked for my dad.”

SAVING WALTER

A year ago, the Collards thought this abused pup wouldn’t survive the weekend

A FEW MONTHS AFTER Jerica and Jason Collard adopted Walter, they bought him a toy chicken.

Walter lifted his head and shook the toy in his mouth. Then he dropped it onto the floor — all without moving his body. The shaggy Goldendoodle was too exhausted for much else.

“He was literally a bag of a bones and a head,” Jerica says. “He was looking for places to die in my backyard.”

Jerica scrolled through her Facebook News Feed at the gym when she saw a photo of Walter that East Dallas nonprofit Doodle Rock Rescue posted. “I saw him and thought, ‘this is literally the cutest dog,’ ” she says. Walter also was the perfect

size; Jason swore he wouldn’t be caught dead walking a small dog through the neighborhood.

She didn’t yet know Walter weighed 33 pounds. He was covered in cigarette burns. He contracted pneumonia, anemia from fleas, heartworm and an ear infection. His previous owners surrendered him, alleging he was aggressive.

Leigh Sendra, founder of Doodle Rock, wasn’t sure if Walter would live. But he needed to be comfortable, so she asked if the Collards would foster him for a weekend.

He struggled to stand but survived the weekend. The weekend turned into a week, and a week into a month. By the six-month mark, Walter’s health had improved dramatically.

“When he started barking at the front door, I was like, ‘you’re a real dog!’ ” Jerica says.

Now most of Walter’s skittish tendencies have disappeared. He has a grumpy old man’s personality, according to his owners, but is well behaved and affectionate.

A portrait of a goldendoodle, which the Collards won at a raffle, earned a spot on the mantel next to their wedding photo.

“You don’t have to go to a breeder to have a good dog,” Jerica says.

BRINGING BEER BACK

WHITE ROCK ALEHOUSE IS EAST DALLAS’ MOST LAKE HIGHLANDS HANGOUT

WHITE ROCK ALEHOUSE owners

Greg Nixon and Dave Kirk’s first batch of home brew tasted so bad they decided it would be their only. When these craft beer connoisseurs entered the brewery business, they enlisted an expert. Blake Morrison, previously of Cedar Creek Brewery and Whistle Post Brewing Co., joined the team to concoct the perfect IPAs, ales, lagers and blondes. Now the spot offers eight of their own brews and 36 total on tap. Instead of dismissing White Rock Alehouse as an East Dallas hangout, consider that Nixon, Morrison and Kirk are all Lake Highlands residents. Nixon and Kirk scoured our neighborhood for potential locations before making Gaston Avenue the brewery’s base.

White Rock Alehouse & Brewery

Ambience: casual brewery

Price Range: $15-$20

Hours: 3-11 p.m.

Monday-Thursday; 3 p.m.-midnight Friday; 10 a.m.-midnight Saturday; 10 a.m.-11 p.m. Sunday 7331 Gaston Ave., suite 100 Whiterockalehouse.com 214.989.7570

What was the first beer Nixon and Kirk made like?

Morrison: These guys brought me a beer one day. They said, “You guys gotta try this. It’s a beer a guy home brewed. We don’t even know who it’s from. They dropped it off at the alehouse.” It had some carbonation, but I was like, “This is not good. This is actually pretty awful.” It just so happened that it was the only batch of home brew they ever made. It was about four years old. They claimed that it tasted just as good as the day that they brewed it.

Kirk: Or just as bad. However you want to describe it.

20 advocatemag.com
DRINK

So why do two guys with little experience open a brewery?

Kirk: Like a lot of people, we’re converts of the domestic beer world. We were at the point in our careers — late 40-something guys who wanted to do something differently. We wanted to start a new business from the ground up, so we chose craft beer. We thought East Dallas, Lake Highlands and the Lakewood area really needed something like this.

How do you name the Alehouse’s beer?

Nixon: Our goal is to have our name somewhat connected to the lake. Bonnie Barge (brown ale) was a social boat that floated on White Rock Lake 50 years ago. Even Bringin’ Mexi Back (Mexican-style lager) has the pump house in the background [of the label]. Big Thicket (blonde) is an area around the lake.

What are the rejects?

Morrison: So I don’t know if you’ve

ever heard of the term “white-girl wasted.” When we put out our hefeweizen, we didn’t have a name for it yet. [One of our servers] was like, “What about “Wheat-girl wasted?” First of all, no person that’s not a millennial is going to understand that.

Let’s talk about the menu. Kirk: The menu, just like a lot of things we’ve done, is collaborative. We give a lot of credit to the general manager, Brad Miller. The week before we opened the original chef we hired quit. Brad has a culinary background. He helped come up with the menu, execute it, get the doors open. To this day, the majority of the items he came up with stay on the menu.

Nixon: Our current chef, Ben Zimmerer, came to us about two weeks in. He was at Rex’s Seafood down in Farmers Market. It’s become a little more seafood-focused.

What’s your favorite Lake Highlands restaurants?

Nixon: That’s a dangerous question. Kirk: We love Tony’s. The bolognese— whew. We love that Lake Highlands is starting to get more restaurants. We’re in that family now, and we want everybody to succeed and do well. The more places that pop up, the better.

This interview has been edited for clarity and brevity.

Unintentionally divisive

Considering this 2-year-old German Shepherd’s name is MAYBE if decision-making isn’t his strong suit. The “lovable goof,” as owner Katie Withrow describes him, originally was named Stewart. We hate to sadden readers, but Maybe’s childhood consisted of injury and neglect. His previous owners didn’t care for a necrotic leg wound, so Dallas Animal Services intervened to provide medical care. Withrow and her husband, Billy, fostered Maybe before adopting him. While deliberating on their companion’s new name, Withrow texted Billy that the pup resembled Dobby from “Harry Potter.” “He asked if that’s what I wanted to name him, and I responded by saying ‘Maybe,’ ” Withrow says. The conversation — coupled with their favorites “Maybe Love Song” and Maeby of “Arrested Development”— finalized their decision. Maybe likes it, probably.

BOBO’s tongue perpetually dangles from her mouth, but the pug never intends to be tacky. She’s overcome her share of heartache, from surviving a puppy mill to living with canine cognitive dysfunction. She’s remained a loving companion, although sleeping near her is not advised. “Bobo really likes small spaces, so she made a bed for herself in the bottom shelf of our nightstand,” Lisa McIntire says. “She can really saw some logs when she sleeps, so we would often wake to unbelievably loud snoring. Once our oldest came along, she started sleeping next to his crib. Somehow, she never woke him up, but we could still hear her on the monitor.”

Sam for President?

Stating that the United States is divided politically is like noting the sky is blue, but maybe a 1-yearold mutt is our solution. The son of a street dog, SAM has yet to meet an enemy. He may be the most affable fellow at White Rock Lake Dog Park, where Cocker Spaniels and Great Danes alike enjoy his company. Owners Susan and Scott Wansbrough think he’d be an excellent diplomat. Some might say he has presidential potential. “He’s never been in fights,” Susan says. “He just runs back to me if a fight breaks out somewhere.” Guess he’ll need to be more assertive if he’s hitting the campaign trail.

Jack, gnarly dog now pawing in everlasting powder

JACK LeBlanc, 16, of Lake Highlands died in July from a hermangiosarcoma tumor in his back leg. Jack was born in Dallas and lived there most of his life. Adopted as an abused rescue dog at about 1, he was uber protective of his family. Friends could only earn his trust after petting him for at least 20 minutes. Those who stopped petting felt the intensity of his bark until they started again. Jack felt most at home in snow, frolicking in the flurries and catching snowballs. Each year, he dutifully posed for firstday-of-school pictures after each child. His other passion was tug-of-war. He is survived by Barret and Annie LeBlanc and their children, Eli, Luc and Vivian.

BOB IDEN

The former Lake Highlands principal can't escape education, even if he wanted to 

BETTER KNOW A NEIGHBOR
Interview by ELISSA CHUDWIN / Photo by DANNY FULGENCIO

fter 11 years leading Lake Highlands High School, former principal Bob Iden thought he’d reinvent himself as a real estate agent in 2008. But the housing market crashed, and he missed the camaraderie of the school system. Now Iden, who grew up in the neighborhood, is a coach and college career advisor at Bishop Lynch High School.

What do you remember most about being a teen at Lake Highlands High?

The first thing that comes to mind is when we opened the stadium my senior year. That stadium was built during my junior year, and that year [the segregated] Hamilton Park High School closed. Those guys came over to Lake Highlands in the spring and went through spring training with us. It was awesome. It was like “Remember the Titans.” There were never any problems, any tensions, animosity or any ill feelings at all. It was almost a magical experience, really, because we got along so well. I still stay in contact with some of those guys.

The other thing I remember was Lake Highlands was quasi-suburbia, but quasi-rural. On the north and east side of the school, the property was bound by barbed wire fence with cattle and horses roaming that area. We’d be out on the football practice field, and cows would come over and stick their head through the fence and start grazing.

What attracted you to education?

Coaching was what got me back into education. I played [football] two years in college. All of a sudden, I had a separation from it. I was like a lot of college kids. I changed my major about three different times. I went from accounting to architectural engineering to law. I really thought I was going to go the law route. I started missing coaching. I investigated what I needed to do that, which was to get a teaching certificate. I changed my major again.

What are your favorite memories during your tenure as teacher, coach or principal?

Winning the state championship in 1981 was huge. That was a once-in-alifetime opportunity for me and all the other coaches. We talked about how that group of kids from Forest Meadow Junior High and Lake Highlands Junior High were just a tour de force. When I was principal, I think the national recognitions we got, like the Blue Ribbon School, AVID National Demonstration School. We were listed as one of the top high schools in the country by U.S. News and World Report.

If you were in another field, what would it be?

I can’t imagine myself doing anything else. I tried. I had the real estate venture. I think if I could retire today and do something else, it would be to work with my wife [at Balfour Publishing] in the yearbook, cap and gown and graduation ring business.

What’s one thing that most people don’t know about you?

Probably my indirect connection to Shakespeare. One of my ancestors, Alexander Iden, was a noble. This is in “King Henry the XI, Part II” one of Shakespeare’s lesser plays. Alexander Iden slayed the rebel Jack Cade, and he was knighted for it. A guy named by Ben Iden Payne was a famous Shakespearean professor at the University of Texas. There’s a theater named after him.

If you were mayor of Lake Highlands, what would you do?

I guess I would try and create more economic incentives for businesses to locate here. I would really like to see shopping centers develop to the way they used to be. I’d just try to do things to attract young families here to grow the community. When my wife and I walk the neighborhood, [we love] to see all the little kids play in the yard in the houses where we and our friends grew up.

This interview has been edited for clarity and brevity.

Schools shouldn’t be a commodity

School is back in session, along with all the promises and perils that go with it.

The news last month rightly trumpeted the generosity of basketball star LeBron James. James announced he was fully funding a public school for “at-risk” kids in his hometown of Akron, Ohio — an “I Promise School.”

It’s hard to characterize the school as a traditional neighborhood school or a charter school as it seems somewhat a hybrid. But all children will have everything they need to succeed: books, bikes, uniforms, mentors, nutrition and the promise of tuition-free college at the University of Akron after high school graduation. GED classes and job placement will be available to their parents, too.

To James’s credit, he did not start a private school; he worked with the Akron public school district to devise the plan.

Wonderful. Now, these questions come to my mind as a religious person: Why should it take private philanthropy to create all the conditions for successful public education? Are not all children equally worthy of a quality education?

We have never seriously committed ourselves to providing a public education system that would give equal opportunity to all students to learn and achieve. Race is part of the reason. When we were forced by the courts to desegregate public schools, we never fully integrated them. Then whites fled for the suburbs so we could segregate by economic choice, supported by redlining housing policies that kept blacks from coming into the neighborhood.

Nowadays, we are doubling down on the dumbing down strategy by starving public schools of adequate state funding; arguing for private school voucher programs, which would cherry-pick minority children as trophies to prove the success of the model; and blaming those who are left in the under-resourced neighborhood schools for their moral failure in achievement.

The narrative of futility is changing, however. Dallas Independent School District is a model of innovation among urban districts. It’s doing a lot with a little. (And unless the state school funding system is changed in the next legislative session, they will be doing with a lot less due to the “Robin Hood” recapture system.)

LeBron James’s “I Promise School” plan not only provides quality teachers and administrators (all of whom were willing to work for less to get to work in this fully resourced environment), but it also provides the wraparound services necessary to produce the best chance of excellent outcomes. We have it backwards in most school districts: Wealthy schools that are filled with predominantly white students who come from successful families across generations are the best resourced; those schools that need the most help to compensate for generations that were either denied access to quality education or provided substandard education are the least resourced. What outcomes should we expect from this strategy? Is it spiritually defensible for religious people to treat education as a commodity that some can afford more than others?

James’s gift has given some children palpable hope for their future. Every child deserves the same.
