New frame of mind The nature of White Rock Lake is captured by self-taught photographer, Adam Velte Story by SIMON PRUITT | Photography by BRAD EVANS

november 2023 lakehighlands.advocatemag.com 7

Velte shoots an evening landscape over White Rock Lake.

GREEN SPOT DOUBLES as a gas station and an eco-friendly convenience store. Look closely, and you’ ll find a number of beautiful prints on the walls, each immortalizing a moment in nature around White Rock Lake. Those photographs were all taken by Adam Velte, a self-taught virtuoso who’s been managing the store for 15 years. “I've been quie t about having my a r t o n t h e w a l l h e r e ,” h e s ay s f r o m behind the smokescreen of a steami n g v a n i l l a l a tt e f r o m G r e e n S p o t ’s e s p r e s s o b a r. “ Mo s t l y b e c a u s e I ' v e ne ver really c urated any kind of ar t space or anything myself.” Velte is no stranger to the art world, though, learning to paint and draw as an elementary student and showcasing his work at local art shows. “I suppose I was doing something right,” he says. “I would always find my-

self in these art shows.” His visual arts career petered out after grade school, and he shifted his creative outlet to music production as an adult. In 2015, his love for the visual realm was rekindled. “My dad had been carrying around my old artwork from elementary school for decades,” Velte says. “I thought they were trashed years ago. He brought them home to me, and I was really touched by that sentimental act. I framed it all and put it on my walls at home.” Feeling inspired, Velte took to the neighborhood to find beautiful scenes to photograph. These days, his equipment of choice is a Fujifilm X-T3, a high-end mirrorless digital camera. When he first set out to photograph on his own, his equipment was of circumstance — his cellphone. “ These are more like cameras with

8 lakehighlands.advocatemag.com NOVEMBER 2023

phones on them,” he jokes, holding up his iPhone. “I was really enjoying this technolog y that’s so convenient. The more shots you take, the more you can learn composition and what you’re doing right or wrong. I had a lot of practice with this thing before I picked up an actual digital camera.” Velte typically sets off around White Rock Lake, primed with inspiration and searching for the place to put it. In the years removed since his initial journey, his subjects have evolved. “I’ve gone from shooting landscapes to shooting more birds and animals,” he says. “Every season, there’s new birds after one goes away.” Over time, that process has become part of Velte’s daily routine. “It helps me decompress, de-stress and wake up,” he says. “Just for the primal side and shedding away the modern world.

SINCE 1996

Who am I really? Let’s go out into nature and find out.” Finding out is exactly what he’s done, leaving behind a beautiful legacy of photos shot with passion in its purest form. Recently, he was featured in Lake Highlands Presbyterian Church’s community art exhibition, his first public show since returning to the field. In it, he displayed all of his best shots from around the local environment. Art feels like an inevitability once it’s found an artist. No matter how far away Velte was removed from the medium, it flowed through his blood and coursed through his muscles. After years of unuse, he’s happy to be flexing them again. “It’s keeping me busy and inspired day after day,” he says.

The birria tacos are one of Rayo's Taqueria's most popular dishes.

LOVE LANGUAGE Rayo’s Taqueria is rich in authenticity and family tradition Story and photography by KELSEY SHOEMAKER

november 2023 lakehighlands.advocatemag.com 11

I F I T ’ S W E D N E S DAY morning around the hint of dawn, Naun Rayo is up and preparing for the Rayo’s Taqueria breakfast rush. It’s the day of the week when he opens by making about 200 breakfast tacos. “When coming from Mexico, where your family works in a restaurant, you go work in a restaurant,” Naun says. “I’m very happy to have my family here, and they help me. I feel proud.” Opening during the pandemic could have been a rough start, but for the Rayo family, it was more like a warm embrace from Dallas. During 2020, former Dallas Cowboy Dez Bryant helped small businesses through the pandemic, and Rayo’s Taqueria was one of them. On opening day, police, firefighters and Texas House Rep. Ana Maria Ramos were there to welcome Rayo’s. “We were trying to survive, and they helped us out a lot,” daughter Giselle Rayo

says. “Before we posted on NextDoor, the restaurant would be empty. The next day, we were flooded. We got popular with togo orders.” Their first location was at a gas station off Miller Road and Jupiter Road, where they only served three-fourths of what their menu is today. Each Sunday, the Rayo’s extended family would come over to start working on food together. Some of it was to prepare for the next week at the gas station and some was just practice for the future if anything else opened up. “We always wanted to start from a little place and then move to here with a bigger space,” says Briceida Rayo, Naun's wife who serves as the taqueria prep chef. Naun, who had been working two chain restaurant jobs at the time, had been waiting more than 20 years to launch his own taqueria. “One day, my wife walked past the lease

sign for a restaurant space at a gas station, and we decided to go check,” he says. “The guy asked for $2,000 for rent, and I said okay.” So in 2017, in a shopping center on Jupiter Road and Northwest Highway, the Rayos found a place for their taqueria. “We’ve been doing it step by step and maybe we will open up another place,” Briceida says. “But I like it here. I love this place. When you come in here, you feel the warmth. You feel like you’re at home.” Rayo’s serves an array of familiar classics such as gorditas, al pastor and birria tacos. But the unexpected gems are the pasta and burgers. “When you want to cook, cook for you,” Briceida says. “We like to cook a lot of love into a lot of things. Our food is different, and we knew that when we opened the restaurant we were going to grow because we cook different things. A lot of people like that.” Rayo’s is known for gorditas, a thick pastry stuffed with savory fillings. It’s a staple in Mexican culture that Giselle knew people would crave. At first, gorditas didn’t make the cut, but now they’re part of the permanent menu. “We are a Tex-Mex place, but emphasis on Tex-Mex,” Giselle says. “The food that [my parents] cook is food they would eat themselves.” Through opening a restaurant and working together, the family has learned more about each other in different ways. “We get mad at each other, you know, and then we have to go home with each other,” Giselle says. “I feel like we’ve gotten so close. So much closer. We see another side of ourselves.” One challenge they’ve joked about is not being able to find someone to cover when they want to go on a family vacation. It always makes them excited to see guests returning or even question the menu that holds tacos next to pasta. And they’re just as eager to convince customers to try it. “What motivates us is our guests who come in and try the food. It makes us try harder to put more love into it,” Briceida says. “The community has been very supportive, and we are very thankful and grateful.” Rayo’s Taqueria, 11411 E. he 2023-24 term at Lake H i g h l a n d s H i g h Sc h o o l features something the school hasn’t had in 25 years. It’s effortlessly colorful and entertaining, with a flair that exudes the passion from years of training. B a to n tw i r l i n g i s ba c k a n d LHHS freshman Breckyn Steele is giving it a spin. Steele’s mother, Kassie was a baton twirler for over than 20 years. She says Breckyn first touched a mat when she was 18 months old. As soon as she showed real interest in the art, Kassie jumped at the opportunity to get her involved. Now as a freshman in high school, she performs with the LHHS band during halftimes and pep rallies, with all eyes looking to her as the sole baton twirler.

“Representing the school is a little scary,” Breckyn says. “It took a little convincing.” LHHS band director Reagan Brumley was all for the idea initially, but the novelty of the position has proven to be challenging. But if Breckyn has it her way, this year will only be the beginning of something huge. “I have four long years left,” she says. “I want to recruit more people to twirl.” Only in her first year, she already has a feel for what she wants to leave behind. In fact, she’s already considering her collegiate future. Kassie attended Kansas State University and twirled there during her term. It’s a priority for her to not put any pressure on her daughter following those same footsteps.

16 lakehighlands.advocatemag.com NOVEMBER 2023

“I don’t want her to pick s c h o o l s fo r m e,” s h e s a ys . “ I want her to pick for education.” As of now, Breckyn's trying to juggle all of her entertainment outlets. On top of her work at school, she’s found the time to co m p e te in lo cal pagean ts as M s . R i c h a rd s o n O u t s t a n d i n g Te e n a n d M s. On l y a few m o n t h s into her first year in high school, it seems that the spotlight will be following her for a very long time. “It’s pretty much in my blood,” she says.

A LEGACY OF FAMILY TRADITION The Lake Highlands Home Tour prepares for its 45th annual tradition for the neighborhood Story by

or 45 years, the Holiday in the Highlands Home Tour has fostered a community where neighbors get together to celebrate the holiday season, fundraise for scholarships, visit unique homes and continue a legacy of family tradition. I t ’s m o re t h a n j u s t a v i s i t t o s e e u n i q u e homes. For some individuals it’s a part of their responsibility as an active member of the Lake Highlands Women’s League. For most families, this time of year means honoring tradition and history. But for the majority of the Lake Highlands community, this is the time to help raise funds to g i ve ba c k to t h e c h i l d re n , e d u ca t i o n a n d community. Whether you’re new to the area, or a longstanding sustainer for the women’s league, this distinguished neighborhood tradition is worth the acclaim.

SO WHAT IS THE HOME TOUR? Established in 1978 by the Lake Highlands Women’s League, the Lake Highlands home tour has been an annual Holiday in the Highlands event. It is a way to raise funds to support the greater Lake Highlands community. Just last year, the organization raised nearly

18 lakehighlands.advocatemag.com NOVEMBER 2023

$200,000 that was directly funded for projects and services for 18 nonprofit organizations, 14 schools and provided 36 Lake Highland High School students with college scholarships. It is a well-known tradition hosting over 1,500 people for an informative and luxurious home tour throughout the neighborhood. Each home has dedicated people they work with to ensure the home tour runs efficiently and people get to learn about the home and owner, Micke Houston docent for the home tour says. It takes multiple women to run the show, with 20 executive committee members each playing a different role in the production. The Sip & Shop Market is one of the revamped experiences at the home tour. Originally, this was known as the luncheon and market part of the home tour tradition. Starting Nov. 30 to Dec. 1, the Sip & Shop experience is a free event hosted during the home tour. To date, the event has raised over $3 million and all proceeds are dispersed to support the community. Light bites, champagne and a cash bar will be accessible for shoppers. Over the years, the home tour has been a hit sensation for people in the metroplex with hopes to continue the tradition for years to come.

I love all the details and work that goes into the home tour from behind the scenes. There’s so much work that leads up to the day of the home tour, and a lot of that stuff folks don’t get to see. I also enjoy seeing familiar faces each year and their beautiful homes.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO PREPARE FO R T H E H O M E TOU R ? The homes are vetted and selected up to a year out at times. Even in mid-October, there are walkthroughs being held to discuss how

many volunteers will be needed, how parking will work, what stories come with the homes and much more leading up to December.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU PARTICIPATED IN THE HOME TOUR? It started at an early age. My mom was an active member of the Women’s League so the home tour was always marked on our family calendar and I remember as a kid my mom was a part of it. I remember when our house was featured in the ’80s; there’s so much legacy and history to the homes that participate. To this day, all hands are on deck in our household the day of the home tour.

We divide it up where a portion goes to our high school seniors that we select from Lake Highland high schools, which is anywhere from 25 to 30 students. The remainder of these funds raised go towards the community to support different Lake Highlands charities, such as Feed Lake Highlands or community ministries. We really want to focus on the kids of Lake Highlands to ensure they are getting scholarships to be able to go to college. For some kids, this scholarship determines whether or not they get the chance to go to college.

It’s a chance to connect and see all of the neighbors that come through the homes. It’s fun to see all the hard work that goes into it and for everybody to see it and socialize with each other. It’s even more special to be doing the home tour with my mom and sister.

She has done the home tour every year and even when we were away for college, both of us still made the effort to attend each year because it’s such a fun family tradition.

My husband and I grew up in Tyler before moving to Lake Highlands 45 years ago in the 1970s. At the time there were a lot of young families, elementary schools and neighborhood children. High Tech High Heels elevates girls for science This neighborhood nonprofit focuses on funding programs to get girls into STEM Story by LILITH SWINT

WO R K I N G I N T H E H I R I N G department of a tech company, Brittany Keepes finds that the majority of applicants who walk through her doors are men. And her company isn’t alone. Even though women make up nearly 50% of the total workforce, only 28% of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) workforce is female. In Keepes’ search to find out why, she learned four in 10 girls say they enjoy STEM activities but don’t get enough practical, handson experience. The STEM inequality started way before walking into an interview, Keepes discovered: It started in school. “I started my career in the STEM field, and I was one of the only girls in the classroom,” Keepes says. “It was really hard to not have the support of other women. Ultimately, to get to a diverse workforce,

that starts in the classroom, and it starts very young.” Keepes found High Tech High Heels, a nonprofit created in 2001 by 31 women who worked at Texas Instruments. The nonprofit aims to introduce more girls to STEM fields through grants to organizations that aligned with that mission, summer camps and workshops. Each camp introduces young girls to different STEM-related fields. One camp was held at the University of Texas - Dallas last summer and allowed a group of girls to get a better feel for physics with activities like creating and studying a wind tunnel. “We funded the physics camps b e ca u se a t t h a t p o i n t i n t i m e, there wasn’t a camp for girls,” says Keepes, who is now the president of the North Texas chapter. “That’s really what started High Tech High

The training encourages teachers and counselors to identify biases and embrace cultural differences within the class. “If we are building products that are going to serve numerous people of different races and genders and geographical locations, we need to be bringing people in that represent what those products mean to them,” Keepes says. “Specifically to make sure that we’re thinking through everything,”

The nonprofit has chapters in North Texas, Colorado, Silicon Valley and Southeast Texas, with the National Board and North Texas chapters based in Preston Hollow.

The nonprofit recently hosted an Alice in Wonderland-themed fundraiser at Royal Oaks Country Club. The ninth annual fundraiser featured a dinner, cocktails and a live and silent auction to raise money for after-school programs. High Tech High Heels is a volun-

Despite the limited number of collegiate rowing teams, both Bell and Davis hope to continue their sport as they move on to college.

The two have rowed for Dallas United Crew for their entire high school career.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS ILLUMINATE the high school experience of most Texas students. But for Victoria Bell and Jack Davis, high school has consisted of waking up before dawn, brutal exercise and disciplined teamwork. The two row for Dallas United Crew, representing the neighborhood and the city all in one. Bell and Davis have been rowing competitively together since ninth grade. Though they’ve never rowed in the same boat, they have formed a relationship outside of the sport.

In 2023, their term as teammates will come to an end. “Coming into senior year, it’s sort of the last dance of all of it,” Davis says. They’ll be going into their last dance with a fair share of momentum. At last year’s Spring National Championships, Bell’s boat finished eighth in the nation for girls, with Davis finishing in the top 20 for boys. Despite the accomplishments, the two still find it difficult to explain

their athletic niche when it’s not attached to a high school program. “It definitely gives you something to talk about, because no one knows what it is,” Bell says. “I feel like it makes me unique.” Much of youth sports is tied to the school. For Bell and Davis, rowing’s detachment was seen as a plus. “It was nice having something out of school,” Bell says. “I got to meet so many different people from different schools. We’re a club, so it’s a bunch of schools together.”

The smorgasbord of high school athletes brought together by Dallas United is put to the test every single morning. Rowing is a team sport, with eight people packed into one boat together, striving to work perfectly in tandem. “It’s just not like any other traditional sport,” Davis says. “It’s more of you just working with your team to get as much out of yourself as possible.” While the pair have spent their high school years in sync, college may bring about change. According to NCSA, a college athletics recruiting program, there are over 150 women’s collegiate rowing programs across the country. For men, there are only 39. Ideally, both would love to continue their rowing careers in college, though that dream will be difficult to achieve. Through visiting schools, meeting with coaches and planning out their future, the reality of their final season isn’t lost on Bell and Davis. This is their last chance to row for the same team. They’re home in Dallas, with their families and friends they’ve made over four years in the sport. “We’ve come so far from where we started,” Bell says. “The relationships I’ve made would not have been made anywhere else. It’ll definitely be emotional.”
