LAKE HIGHLANDS BOOK CLUB Classic and must-read titles from neighborhood authors BY CLAUDIA VEGA
Want to snuggle in and turn some pages this holiday season? We’ve got you covered with these easy and accessible book selections from Lake Highlands authors. SING HER NAME Neighbor Rosalyn Story’s third novel hits the shelves in January. It tells the story of Eden Malveaux, a Black waitress in New York with a stunning voice that rivals the world’s greatest opera singers. The novel is inspired by Sissieretta Jones. She was the daughter of a formerly enslaved man and the first Black woman to headline at Carnegie Hall.
DON’T PANIC, CALL DAN.
TIGERS, NOT DAUGHTERS Samantha Mabry, who grew up in Lake Highlands, has a few young-adult books to choose from. The most recent was named a School Library Journal Best Book of 2020. It’s a tale of three sisters and their attempts to escape their negligent father. After the oldest, Anna, falls to her death, her sisters are left to create a life without her. Mabry weaves magical realism through this family journey that explores grief, family, love, dating violence and the challenges of coming of age.

p r o fi l e job after college was at Fossil in 2004. I started there as an assistant designer working on fabric and leather handbags and really loved 3D design and working with such a variety of materials. I especially loved the community of people who I worked with there and working with the factories. It was such an amazing entry into the design world. I’m really grateful for that initial experience, the people and it being so positive. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE LIFE AS A DESIGNER? I have had a really positive experience here juggling between full-time and freelance over the past several years. I’m so thankful for a broad range of design experience from graphic design to men’s and women’s design.

andbag designer Aimee Bruyninckx is fascinated with fabric of all materials. It’s been 18 years since she got her start making handbags, from concept design to product development. After dedicating her time and skill to different handbag and accessory companies, she decided to start her own business, Bag Pop. By December 2018, she was on her way to creating a sustainable product inspired by factories and sewing rooms she’d visited here and abroad. The environment she wanted to create was one with good working conditions and reasonable hours for employees. At the
same time, Bruyninckx envisioned Bag Pop as a company that gives back to the community, so she employed refugee women at Vickery Trading Company. ARE YOU FROM LAKE HIGHLANDS? No, I actually grew up in Lubbock and moved to Dallas right after college. I have been in Lake Highlands since 2012. WHERE DID YOU DESIGN CAREER START? I had an internship in New York for a denim company, but my first real
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE BAG POP? I had learned a little bit about the refugee community here in Dallas through church and friends who volunteer in the Vickery area. I’m sure many remember J. Crew telling Gaia’s story and selling their bags; it was incredible. I had already been thinking about starting something similar. And that was so inspiring to me that J. Crew shared their story of refugee women here in Dallas making bags. I learned of a few sewing rooms and decided to start Bag Pop while freelancing in 2018. There were other brands introducing refugee-made products, and it was so inspiring to see. A good friend connected me with a few of the sewing rooms, and we started with a few simply constructed fabric bags. I quickly got to know the women and really have loved working with them.
HOW DID YOU FIND REFUGEE WOMEN IN VICKERY MEADOW? A very good friend of mine connected me with Vickery Trading. I immediately met the women there and loved them and their programming. What they offer for the men, women and families relocating to Dallas is incredible. They are reading books with them, teaching everyone about driving, and they are learning all sorts of American skills. Sewing is only a part of it. They are taking them in and taking care of the families. From there, I started working with women in their homes who needed to be home working with children or while going to school.

HOW DO YOU GIVE BACK TO OUR COMMUNITY? Through Bag Pop, we give a portion of all sales back to two really amazing organizations: Mommies In Need and Young Lives. I love both these organizations and the support and love they provide for families and especially women.
Interview has been edited for clarity and brevity.
Abrams
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUNG ASPIRING DESIGNERS? Be positive, and keep your personal goals in mind. We are not all on the same path. We have very different skills and talents and don’t need to be compared. It’s so important to keep this in mind and to be very persistent in sticking with your goals.
WALK ME THROUGH YOUR TYPICAL DAY. Our mornings are usually pretty wild and quick getting three kids ready and to school. Then head to work after that. Lately we are working on fall 2022 development: looking at sketches, color, reviewing samples and commenting on them is very common in my day to day. Lots of creativity but also plenty of things that just have to be done. After work, we’re back to kids’ activities or maybe dinner with friends. We do lots of taxiing kids to events right now in the evenings.
ille
HOW LONG IS THE PROCESS OF COMPLETING A BAG FROM CONCEPT TO FINAL PRODUCT? It depends — the simple styles started in pattern form and after a few months, rounds of samples were ready. More complicated pieces can take longer to get materials and construction down.
WHO SERVES AS YOUR INSPIRATION? I have watched many people and leaders treat others in kind, encouraging and caring ways, and I love that. People that serve others, help to take care of others and have a larger perspective on life and everything is so inspirational for me. People that give others a boost, I love that and hope to do the same.
env
WHAT QUALITIES MAKE A GOOD BAG? Beautiful, thoughtful materials are so important. I also love an interesting construction.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR WORK-LIFE-FAMILY BALANCE? It’s busy but so full, and I am so thankful. We have three sweet kids ages 12, 9 and 7, so the work-life balance is for sure a juggle. My family is a big priority for me, and I know they need to see the value of hard work and being engaged while having fun in what they do.
Gre
WHAT WERE SOME CHALLENGES YOU FACED WHEN YOU STARTED BAG POP? I really struggled with pricing initially but finally found a good spot after trial and error.
HOW DID THE PANDEMIC AFFECT THE FLOW OF YOUR WORK? My freelance for sure slowed down as retail struggled so much, but Bag Pop picked up which was so exciting. Neighborhood friends, my community and my family were so supportive through that time. People who love supporting the refugee community, love the way the bags are made, keep buying gifts, asking about what’s new and what’s next, and I so much appreciate that.
75 - Central Expressway
ARE YOU TAKING A BREAK FROM BAG POP? Bag Pop has for sure been running slower for a short time, as I started back at Fossil on the Women’s Leathers team this past summer. We are still filling Bag Pop orders and also planning on some fun things for the holidays.

r u ce Ei n so h n was 24 and f re s h o u t o f SMU when he found a career for himself selling freight — or misc e l l a n e o u s p ro d u c t s i n bulk — one day with Jerry Fleischer, his boss and business partner. “He was in the thrill of the buy. I was in the thrill of the sell, so we made a great team,” Einsohn says. “Then one day, he came to me and he said, ‘I bought a deal’ like he did everyday, and I said ‘OK, what i s i t,’ a n d h e sai d i t was gift wrap.” Einsohn’s mind jumped to the tubes of paper w ra p p e d i n p l a st i c so l d at the grocery store. “He said, ‘What am I go n n a d o w i t h t h o s e? ’ ” Einsohn says. T h i s w ra p p i n g p a p e r f i l l e d m o re t h a n o n e freight truck. The sight of the rolls inside the trailers of the trucks was staggering. The stock was enough unused and leftover wrapping paper to fill 55 tractor trailers — semi-trucks complete with engines and trailers for storage. Department stores had to ge t r i d o f t h e p a p e r, rather than reuse it for future holidays because they need a new design every year. Stores are also picky about holiday paper and don’t want another store’s leftover stock, either. Once Einsohn had sold all of the uniform designs f ro m t h e t ra i l e rs of t h e t r u c ks, h e wa s l ef t w i t h what he calls, “the leftover
of the leftovers.” “ I c a l l e d m y b ro t h e r, who was in college at North Texas at the time, and said, ‘Whatever your plans are for this weekend, cancel them,’” he says. “I said, ‘We’re going to Traders Village in Grand Prairie and we’re going to sell a bunch of gift wrap.’” The shows have become a staple for Einsohn, owne r of U n d e r Wra ps. I n a typical year pre-pandemic, he’d take Under Wraps to 40 to 55 shows a year across the country. All the t ra d e s h o w s w e re c a n celed last year except for the one in Canton, Texas. This year, he’s grateful for the 10 shows scheduled for October and November. S t u f f e d f ro m f ro n t to back with boxes of wrappi ng paper, ribbons a nd gift boxes, Under Wraps has catered to customers’ g i f t- w ra p p i n g n e e d s fo r the past 46 years. Under Wraps has enough choices, even for picky businesses and ind i v i d u a l s, a n d eve r yo n e pays the same price. Whether a client wants to go big or keep it simple, they’ll most likely find what they’re looking for in this Richardson warehouse in a half ream — 417 feet of wrap, or full ream — 833 feet of wrap. and staff. From hundreds of wrap options, two in particular drive clients wild — leopard print and Western designs on craft, which is like brown paper bag. The leopard print is a favorite design all season long, including Christmas. “At the height of Christmas, that’s what we sell m o re of t h a n a ny t h i n g b e c a u s e l e o p a rd s a re really popular,” he says. “And you can use it for anything. A lot of people use it for Christmas.” F i r s t M o n d a y Tra d e Days in Canton, the largest flea market in the country, is the most magnetic draw for the company and is the one they frequent most compared to other stops. Einsohn takes his wraps and accessories to Canton - where sales have increased since the pandemic - once a month. “Last year, Canton was way u p a ga i n b e ca u s e there weren’t very many a l te r n a t i ve s,” h e s ays. “And we think that this year the reason the show is up is a combination of cabin fever, wanting to get out, go to an event, shop with other people and be with family.” Most of Under Wraps’ profits are primarily from these cross-country trade shows, which Einsohn has attended for the past 25 years. “We love the fact that when we go to do those shows our rent money, in stea d of go i n g i nto a
p ro m o t e r ’s p o c k e t , i s going to a junior league or organization similar to it,” he says. Funds go back into the community to women’s nonprofit organizations which are the primary recipients of the funds. “Our primary method of selling is at shows like Chi Omega Christmas or ‘Neath the Wreath,” he s ays. “ Th o s e a re t h e i r fundraising shows, and they’re all juried. They pick interesting vendors from all over the country and, in 25 years, we have never been turned down by a jury. We have always been selected to be a vendor.” Einsohn says he wants to know where his money is going and make sure it’s helping those who really need it in the community. Under Wraps also donates gift wrap and accessories to various charity organizations, including orphanages, prisons and Toys for Tots. “ T h a t ( re n t m o n e y ) p rov i d es m o n ey fo r a l l t h e i r go o d w o r k s , t h e things they do, whether i t ’s w o m e n’s s h e l te rs , literacy, clothing drives, whatever it is that they d o to h e l p p e o p l e l ess fortunate.” O n e t h i ng Einsohn doesn’t do is bags. Those are for when the recipient isn’t too special. “We’re not big bag fans,” Einsohn says. “We kind of think that a bag is what you do when you don’t care very much.”

MYANMAR STORE - ASIA GROCERIES 6887 Shady Brook Lane Soaps, creams, cleansing masks — options abound at Myanmar Store, a h a n d y so u rce for “all things Burmese.” Shoppers will find a lot to choose from in this tiny store. Papaya and rice milk with honey infused-soaps, skin-protecting neem and turmeric, aloe and tamarind are found near bergamota shampoo a n d 10 0 % p u re henna. Try snacks like crumbled soft flour cakes, jelly sticks and preserved red dates. Find pounded shrimp paste, pickled splinter caparid (a pickled vegetable condiment) fish sauces, fish crackers and bags of fried beans and pickled tea leaf. New rice cookers and woks are shelved near a colorful array of sparkling, beaded flip-flops. The store clearly has a reputation among those in the know: While we were there, a Dallas first-timer visiting from San Francisco quickly popped in and out of the store merely for a particular bag of Thai jasmine rice.
DESI GROCERY 6875 Shady Brook Lane Desi Grocery, a neighborhood international grocery staple after just two years, vends foods primarily from India, Malaysia, Myanmar and Thailand, says owner Shaukat Salleh. Top sellers are dry fish, noodles, veggies, fresh produce and chicken, he says. Salleh is originally from Myanmar but lived in Malaysia before coming to the United States. He says his family owned-and -operated store is known for its halal specialties such as readymade kebabs and four kinds of samosas: beef, chicken, veggie and potato. “We keep all the kosher things customers look for,” he says, adding his products come from a local supplier and are FDA approved.
His aunt, Fatimah Rahaman, helps customers with shopping, pointing out her personal favorites when asked, including the wide selection of international coffees, clarified butter from India and Indonesia, assorted dried beans from Malaysia such as lablab, Rangooni Val, Desi Val, kala chana, red chori and snackable fish crackers. Want rice for supper? What kind? Thai glutinous? Berry or special sweet rice? That and more are on the shelves, including an assortment of noodles from Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and Myanmar. It’s fun to scout the freezer section and do some supper surfing: grated coconut, shrimp, baby cuttlefish, hilsa fish and climbing perch, jiringa meat, goat, chicken and beef. december 2021

MARU GROCERY 8353 Park Lane Maru Grocery hides in a retail triangle at Park Lane and Ridgecrest in a tiny footprint, housing treasures galore. This Ethiopian market has a cornucopia of interesting items, not the least of which are alluring spices. Mitmita is a powdered mix of chili powder, ginger powder, African bird’s eye chili peppers, rosemary, cardamom and other seasonings. It amps up burgers to a new level, but for the untrained user, beware. Like the saying goes — “a little dab’ll do ya” — it’s hot. Still, try it. Berbere should also be on the shopping list. It has some zing with a mix of chiles, garlic, allspice and cinnamon. The market vends lamb tibs, teff flour — “The Ancient Grain of Ethiopia” — and dabo kolo, which is roasted bread crumbs that taste similar to pretzels.

The kits range from standard to premium depending on the size of tequila ordered alongside. Each kit includes a recipe card, a lime, jalapeño, a jar of margarita salt, a bottle of Topo Chico and tequila. Bigger baskets like this one come with cups and paper straws. Eightounce jars of margarita salt alone sell for $10.

EVICTION HOT SPOT
Story by CHRISTINA HUGHES BABB | Illustration by JESSICA TURNER
T
he numbers are jarring, revealing that more landlords have filed evictions in Lake Highlands than in any other part of Dallas County. In fact, five of 10 so-called “eviction hotspot” addresses are in the 75243 ZIP code, according to Princeton’s Eviction Lab. The pandemic did not cause the situation, but focus on housing and inequity brought on by the crisis could wake up advocates, leaders and policymakers as they allot attention and resources. We posed questions about the data to our City Council representative, eviction lawyers, apartment community owners, trade associations and housing advocates. They are helping us determine why District 10’s evictions are elevated compared to the rest of the city, who is affected, what it means for the neighborhood and how data can help solve longstanding local housing problems.

et’s lighten up, neighbors. Some of you are doing that with holiday decorations and yard art. That may reflect a secular sense of the season — Santa Claus and reindeer, elves and candy canes, rooftop stars and strings of white or colored lights. There’s a religious underpinning to much of these celebrations. December features the minor Jewish holy days called the Festival of Lights (also known as Hanukkah), and the major Christian holy day called the Feast of the Nativity (also known as Christmas). Light is central to both holidays. Hanukkah involves the lighting of a nine-branched candelabra called a menorah. On successive nights, the central candle — the shamash (the “attendant”) — is used to light another candle until all eight have been lit. This recalls the miracle of oil from the cleansing of the Temple in Jerusalem when the Jewish Maccabees retook Jerusalem from the Greek overlords who had desecrated the sanctuary. They found only enough oil in temple lamps to burn for one night, but the oil kept the lamps burning for eight nights. Jews remember this as evidence that God’s abundance can be trusted, and that light conquers darkness as good conquers evil. Christmas is specifically the story of the birth of Jesus and the Christian belief in him as the Son of God, Messiah of Israel and Savior of the world. But John’s Gospel uses the metaphor of light: “What has come into being in him was life, and life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.” We associate darkness with ignorance and evil. Enlightenment drives out the darkness and the powerlessness of un-

knowing. The light of truth opens our minds and lessens our fears. To know something is to have power that can be used either for control over others or in service to others. Which leads to the second thing: goodness. Shedding light is not just sharing an intellectual truth; it is spreading a social good. “You are the light of the world,” Jesus told his followers. “I will give you as a light to the nations,” says the prophet Isaiah as the mouthpiece of God, “that my salvation may reach the end of the earth.” To be light in this way is to confront hate with love and transform it, to challenge cruelty with kindness and convert it. In this season of shorter days and longer nights, let’s lighten up in at least two ways: learn something new and true, and do something good and right. Read something out of your comfort zone. Talk to someone with knowledge about a subject you don’t know about. Avoid conspiracy theories. Run to expertise, not away from it. Then, find
a need and meet it. Commit a random act of kindness. Volunteer on behalf of those in need. Give money to relieve hardships. Once you’ve got both of those earnest duties done, you might lighten up in one more way. As Chesterton put it: “Angels can fly because they take themselves lightly.” GEORGE MASON is pastor of Wilshire Baptist Church, president of Faith Commons and host of the “Good God” podcast.
