FIREFLY FRAN TAKES FLIGHT
Author Kristin Crowell Ellis shares the ‘power of positivity’ with young readers
Story by ARIEL WALLACE | Photography by YUVIE STYLESWhile driving one afternoon to visit her father who had experienced a paralyzing stroke, Lake Highlands author Kristin Crowell Ellis saw a flurry of fireflies in a field. Even as doctors began to prepare the family for the worst, Ellis’ father always kept his hope. The beauty of the fireflies and the positivity of her father inspired her to write this poem.
“Perhaps you may have noticed in the warm month of July, while lolling in the dusky dark, beneath the starry sky, a shimmer over soft green grass, alive with snails and slugs: the bright and fiery light of the loveliest of bugs! And have you ever wondered how they came to shine so bright as they flip and flash and dip and dance about the quiet night?
The answer’s rather magical, so if you’d like to know come with me and you will see...ready? Set? Let’s go!”
These words later became the prelude of Ellis’ first book, Firefly Fran’s Fran-tastic Day . Firefly Fran did not take flight until some years later. It was not until Ellis’ first daughter was born that she decided to start writing the book and trying to get it published. Things really started rolling once her second daughter came along around in 2016.
As a speech pathologist, Ellis sees how family support and positive thoughts can affect a patient’s progress in speech therapy. Those who do not believe that they will get better and harvest negative energy will not put as much effort into recovery, Ellis says.
Ellis experienced how powerful a positive mindset can
be when her own family went through an unpredictable rough patch.
The book release was delayed for two years because of the major shortages and shipping issues due to COVID. This was frustrating for Ellis but worth the wait, she says.
Firefly Fran’s Fran-tastic Day was awarded the 2023 Golden Wizard Book Prize and was a top finalist for the 2022 Hindi’s Libraries Females of Fiction Award.
WHEN DID YOUR WRITING JOURNEY BEGIN?
I live for writing. The beginning of my (writing) journey started in the third grade. My teacher told me that I was a good writer and put me in UIL Ready Writing, and I’ve loved it ever since. I love writing words on a page and being able to arrange them in a beautiful way.
FIREFLY FRAN’S FRAN-TASTIC DAY IS THE FIRST BOOK YOU HAVE WRITTEN AND YOUR FIRST CHILDREN’S BOOK. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO WRITE IT?
It has always been a dream of mine to write a book. Firefly Fran kind of evolved naturally over a period of ye ars. It started about 20 years ago, when my dad had a stroke while I was in college that resulted in paralysis of his left side. My dad was always just the most helpful person. He was just a gregarious guy who had the most infectious personality. He always seemed invincible, so when he had the stroke, it was a pretty big shock to our family. During the rehabilitation process, he always remained so positive and hopeful for the future.
While driving to visit my dad in rehabilitation, I looked into the distance and saw some fireflies. Then this poem came to me. It felt like it was given to me by God. I went home, wrote the words of the poem down, and after a few years of sitting with it, I decided to make a story out of it. That poem eventually became the prelude to the book.
ALONG WITH YOUR DAD, YOU WERE ALSO INSPIRED BY THE “POWER OF POSITIVITY.” WHAT DOES THAT MEAN TO YOU?
I have been aware of the theory behind the power of positive thinking since I was a kid because my mom would listen to Norman Vincent Peale in the car and talk to me about it when I was having a hard time with something. What we focus on becomes our reality. If we get in the habit of seeing the positive at an early age, it can help ingrain that skill, help with overall resilience and cope with negative situations that are going to come. But it didn’t really hit home with me. I mean, I didn’t really realize how profoundly our thoughts can impact our reality until I had a real-life example of it during my dad’s fight to recover from his stroke, as well as everything he has overcome since that time.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT THAT YOU SHARE THE “POWER OF POSITIVITY” WITH YOUNG READERS AND FAMILIES?
I am not suggesting we should resist or deny negative feelings. Even negative feelings serve a purpose, and we have to acknowledge, feel and process those emotions. But it is also important to teach children that perseverating on negative events or focusing on negative circumstances that either have happened or that we fear might
happen, do not serve us well and can ultimately make things even worse. Thought patterns become habits, and the longer a habit persists, the harder it is to break. If we can try to guide children to focus on the positive aspects of a situation, it could help them develop a better ability to cope with the ups and downs of life in a healthier way. People who are more optimistic tend to have higher self-esteem and are, not surprisingly, happier in general. And I think that’s every parent’s ultimate goal — that their child grows up to be happy and to like themselves.
WHAT ARE SOME WAYS THAT YOUR CHARACTER FIREFLY FRAN EMBRACES POSITIVITY?
One of the ways the story of Firefly Fran demonstrates the power of positive thought is by highlighting the difference in the way Firefly Fran (the main character) and her fellow fireflies deal with change and uncertainty. At the beginning of the story, all of the fireflies believe that their light came from an outside source (lightning). When the storms pass, and the lightning goes away, all of the fireflies except for Fran immediately begin to anticipate losing their light. Because they are fearful of losing their light and are focused on losing it, that is exactly
what happens — they lose their light. But Fran does not lose her light. Why? In the end, the story reveals that the fireflies’ light did not come from the lightning itself, but the joy they felt when they saw the lightning. Firefly Fran never loses her light because she remained positive and focused on the possibility that the fireflies could work together to find a solution. And in an ironic twist, that is exactly what ends up happening.
FIREFLY FRAN’S FRAN-TASTIC DAY HAS RECEIVED GREAT REVIEWS ONLINE AND IS ALREADY AN AWARD-WINNING BOOK. HOW DOES IT FEEL TO KNOW THAT PEOPLE ARE READING AND ENJOYING THE BOOK?
It’s really wonderful. I’m so glad that people are enjoying it, and I have gotten messages from people through Facebook that I don’t even know, and they were really impressed with the book and the message. It’s been really encouraging to see that people are loving the book and benefiting from the message.
Firefly Fran’s Fran-tastic Day is available at fireflyfran.com and The Store in Lake Highlands.
This interview has been edited for clarity and brevity.
DINNER & A MOVIE
Vetted Well elevates theater favorites
IT’S NOT EVERY DAY you find a restaurant that has everything from movie theater popcorn to buffalo cauliflower.
At Vetted Well in Lake Highlands you are able to enjoy all of your goto movie snacks and favorite drinks inside of Alamo Drafthouse.
“Everything in our well has been vetted,” says Jordan Michael, president of Alamo Drafthouse North Texas. “Any drinks that we’re mixing or food we’re cooking has been vetted well, and they’re gonna taste just great.”
Since Vetted Well restaurants are attached to Alamo Drafthouse theaters, the restaurant is allowed to be more creative with menu items and have a wider selection.
“Who’s coming in that restaurant depends on the movie,” Michael says. “We get such diverse crowds of people, and depending on the title of the film, you need to offer some real diversity in the menu.”
Depending on what movie is coming to theaters, Vetted Well likes to make special menu items themed for the films. For the recent movie
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Vetted Well introduced a bar game based on the special 20-sided dice used in Dungeons & Dragons games. Customers would roll die that decided the price they would pay for the drink and what drink they would receive. The drinks that one could get from the die ranged from a shot of Fireball to Fernet-Branca to a signature cocktail made just for the movie.
With the movies in mind, Vetted Well created elevated versions of your movie theater concession
favorites called “Snacks.” Some of those favorites include bottomless popcorn made with clarified butter, baked pretzels with honey mustard, and hatch green chile queso, fried dill pickles, wings, and loaded fries.
One Snack that is not a traditional movie concession item is the buffalo cauliflower. The cauliflower is served with vegan ranch dressing and celery.
When the pandemic hit and movie theaters had to close, Alamo moviegoers wanted to know what would happen to the popcorn and the buffalo cauliflower. So much so the Alamo Drafthouse posted the recipe for its fried cauliflower online for people to enjoy during the lockdown.
“People wanted their fried buffalo cauliflower. So we said ‘Here’s a make-it-at-home version of our buffalo cauliflower,’” Michael says. “Because it’s so good. It’s healthy junk food.”
Along with Snacks Vetted Wells offers select candies and other favorites like Angus beef hot dogs, fresh baked cookies, pizza and a variety of sandwiches and shakes. The pizza dough is made from scratch daily using a large Hobart mixer.
“Again, it’s that whole idea of being vetted well,” Michael says. “We’ve gone through so many dough recipes to get it just right. If we have bad dough, it gets tossed.”
With all of the new movie releases
coming in the next few months, Vetted Well is already anticipating the summer. Vetted Well is making menu preparations to pair with the upcoming films and finding ways to utilize the bar space for familyfriendly films.
“It’s gonna be a crazy summer,” Michael says. “We are going to really utilize this bar space to have some good family parties and some activations of that nature in this bar space, and big things are happening with our menus in the next few months. There is a big focus on creativity and summer fun.”
THE MEMORABLE MAGICIAN
Our friendly neighborhood prestidigitator
AL RAYA lives a magical life. At a young age, he was captivated by sleight-of-hand illusions and parlor card tricks.
“One of my uncles pulled a quarter out of my ear, well that did it,” he says. “I wanted to be a magician.”
His father owned an Italian restaurant on Hollywood Boulevard when he was a child, a few blocks down from Burt Wheeler’s Magic Shop. Raya described the shop as a haven for the world’s most famous magicians at the time and recalls spending his formative years around them and becoming fascinated with their craft.
“They would have me run down to the restaurant and get them meatball sandwiches,” he says. “When I got back they would show me tricks.”
Raya’s most meaningful interaction with a magician came with Harry Blackstone Sr.
Blackstone made his name during World War II, entertaining troops at USO events. One of the “biggest magicians in the world,” Raya remembers Blackstone for his “big, puffy, white hair” that resembled Albert Einstein.
“I saw him cutting a deck of cards with one hand, and I asked him to teach me that,” Raya recalls.
“He showed me and said ‘You keep practicing and you’ll make a good magician one day,’ and he gave me his own deck. I used that deck my whole life.”
With Blackstone’s deck of cards and a catalog of tricks learned from the magic shop, Raya stayed motivated to improve and began to weave magic into his day-to-day life.
As an adult, his passion for magic became less of a hobby and more of a strategy to employ in different workplace scenarios.
Working as a public relations professional for Frito-Lay, Raya often met with executives to lobby for

more shelf space and new branding for his product.
At one particular sales pitch, he got up and performed a matchbox illusion for the executive he was pitching to. In the trick, a match is lit and held in the subject’s hand away from the matchbox before magically appearing back in the box without the two ever touching.
“Weeks later he came back and specifically mentioned that he remembered (my) trick above all the other pitches he got,” Raya says. “We made it memorable.”
Raya later spent time working as a teacher in public and private high schools where he taught English as a second language. Magic came in handy in the classroom, he says, because of its memorable nature.
“The first thing a good teacher does when they walk in is get their (students’) attention,” he says. “I found as an educator I could walk in and do some piece of magic. I would take a piece of paper and make it float, the kids would just freeze.”
Raya says the magic tricks in the classroom were very effective, with students often asking him to perform a trick again.
“I would say, ‘Let’s do this lesson first, and I’ll do something after class,’” Raya says.
Now retired, Raya still finds ways to stay active with his magic skills.
He attends St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and is often called on to entertain at youth events or fundraisers for the affiliate school. He now describes himself as a Catholic magician, interpolating theology into his performances.
For Raya, what began as a hobby has morphed into a consistent enhancement of his work, faith and social life.
“To me, the art of magic is very personal,” he says. “It’s human interaction.”
REMEMBER THE TITAN
An ode to a former principal of Forest Meadow Junior High
Story by CAROL TOLER | PhotographyWhen Jeff Kane was celebrated at the dedication of a Forest Meadow Junior High activity center bearing his name, it was standing room only for Richardson ISD administrators, teachers and parents. It is rare in school districts, and almost unheard of in RISD, to name a facility after someone who has never been a district superintendent.
This man stood out from the crowd.
Even as the school undergoes a massive transformation, Kane’s building will remain.
RISD is transforming all its junior high schools to middle schools.
A major construction project underway at Forest Meadow will add classrooms and expand other
spaces to accommodate incoming sixth-graders.
The Jeff Kane Activity Complex will live on in the refurbished building. Students, parents and teachers walking through will be reminded of him daily, but most never met the man. So, who was he?
Kane, a mountain of a man, became a classroom teacher and
coach at Lake Highlands High School after serving in the U.S. Air Force. He was named Outstanding Principal by the National Association of Secondary School Principals and by then-State Rep. Tony Goolsby. He visited the White House to receive Forest Meadow’s U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon des ignation from then-President Bill Clinton in a Rose Garden ceremony.
“Jeff was perfectly suited to dealing with junior high kids and their worried parents,” his wife Susan says. “He was 6-foot-3 and stood at the end of the hall in his three-piece suit and Florsheim shoes, and he said, ‘There’s just no reason to have a discipline problem.’ He had a calming effect on the kids. He stood bus duty every afternoon and kept his finger on the pulse of everything at the school. His philosophy was to treat every student equally, and the parents appreciated him for it.”
Rayelynn Dady, PTA presi dent at Forest Meadow from 1997 to 1998, recalls that Kane demanded respect and got it.
“I would see him walk through the cafeteria, and kids would behave,” Dady says. “He had the respect of the teachers as well.”
Cheri Dunn Luck, who chaired Market in the Mead ow with Dady in the 1990s, echoes the sentiment.
“Jeff Kane was the most ‘hands on’ principal with whom I’ve come in contact. He was visible in the morning welcoming all students, he was there with the teachers at lunch, and when a fight broke out, he was there pulling the kids off one another.”
The only time he wasn’t
there, she adds, is when he’d pop over to Moss Haven Elementary to bring lunch and sit with his granddaughter.
Luck says Kane recognized the capabilities of the many women toiling around him, appointing Brenda Owens as the first female athletic coordinator in the district. He often encouraged female volunteers to take the lead, she says.
Luck recalls Kane charming his way out of a bill issued to PTA volunteers after the fundraiser one year.
“After we made a record $60,000 at Market in the Meadow, an administrator from Building Maintenance sent an invoice to Forest Meadow for over $2,000 in air-conditioning costs for the weekend.”
Kane asked the guy to come to his office, where he introduced Luck and Dady and proceeded “with a wry smile and
hands behind his head” to detail the amount of volunteer hours spent and how the money would benefit RISD and Forest Meadow.
“The guy left with his tail tucked between his legs, and Jeff laughed out loud when he closed the door,” Luck says. “Jeff said the poor guy never had a chance.”
Today any student willing to tackle challenging curriculum is encouraged to enroll in advanced placement courses in junior high and high school. But back when Donna Chereck’s oldest child was preparing to enter Forest Meadow, kids needed high scores to qualify, and standardized tests weren’t her daughter’s strong suit. After Chereck pleaded her case, Kane allowed her daughter to try advanced classes in English and math, and within two weeks she’d added advanced science and social studies.
“He had kept an eye on her and took the time to care about how she was performing. I was so appreciative and asked something like, ‘It will be hard to repay you.’ He said, ‘Don’t worry, you can be my PTA president.’ And I’ll be darned, he soon asked, and I was glad to serve.”
Chereck says Kane had a special place in his heart for PTA volunteers who rolled up their sleeves to aid students at the school. He had a special fondness for Carolyn Gillis, who served
as PTA president from 1990 to 1991 and was killed in an auto accident while on vacation with her family. Selfless also in her leadership roles in church and Lake Highlands Women’s League, Gillis was known for her gift of gab.
“Jeff always referred to Carolyn as ‘Have you got a minute, Mr. Kane.’ Then he would give her his undivided attention for an hour,” Chereck says.
Kane died in 1999 after a battle with cancer. His family set up a scholarship in his memory, now administered by the Exchange Club of Lake Highlands.
“Jeffrey loved being a school principal — he enjoyed being around the kids, and he listened to them,” Susan Kane says. “He cultivated a great rapport with the fire chief, the postal service, the gang squad and others, and he used them as tools in his toolbox.
“If you broke the rules, you paid the price. He also liked to reward his staff. He never met a person he couldn’t deal with, and he had a good sense of humor.”
A posthumous tribute to Jeff Kane from fellow faculty and staff ran in the school directory in 1999-2000, his final year as principal. It concluded with this statement: “Jeff Kane was a man of great stature who led Forest Meadow through its triumphs and tragedies for 14 years. His presence and spirit will always be felt wherever faculty, staff, students and parents gather in our school. Although we will miss him greatly, students and teachers will continue to strive for his goal of educational excellence.”

IN THE RING
Story by AVA HUTCHISON Fernanda Lopez is Lake Highlands’ homecoming queen and wrestling champion Photography by LAUREN ALLENHomecoming queen and wrestling champion — two very different titles, held by one Lake Highlands High School student.
Fernanda Lopez started her senior year in August 2022 ranked seventh nationally in her weight class. A wrestler since her freshman year, she was one of the few that began Lake Highlands’ first female wrestling team.
In October 2022, Lopez was named homecoming queen by her peers.
“I did not think I was going to win at all,” Lopez says.
After that, she had another win in mind: the state championship. Finishing her junior year in fourth place at the state level and 21st in the nation, she wanted to surpass her previous rankings, especially after watching a national tournament.
In February, Lopez accomplished her goal and won the tournament. “Once I put something in my head, I try my best to achieve that,” she says.
Starting on the team with only two other girls, she says she knows she’s an important role model for her teammates. Her triumphs allow other girls who may want to join the team to see that they can achieve.
“We had to try so hard to show everyone that we were serious about wrestling,” she says.
While her work within her sport and the community has been difficult, it has paid off. As she finishes her last year as a Wildcat, she said she is proud of herself, her team and their joint accomplishments.
Lopez has received a scholarship to Southern Oregon University, where she plans to continue wrestling.
