Forever, Together
Heather Morris is celebrating the memory of her friend through permanent jewelry
Interview by ARIEL WALLACE | Photography by YUVIE STYLESHeather Morris and Shauna Schultz meant the world to each other. Morris could have never imagined being separated from her “ride-or-die” friend.
So when Schultz, a Lake Highlands mother and teacher, died from nonHodgkin lymphoma in 2022, Morris knew she wanted to do something to keep her spirit and their memories linked in her heart forever.
That’s when she launched her permanent jewlery company, Eternally Linked, to honor her “ray of sunshine” and give others the gift of lasting memories.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE ETERNALLY LINKED?
My good friend Shauna Schultz used to be a teacher at Lake Highlands Elementary. She passed away from cancer last year. When someone passes away, there are always a few months of grieving and after that, it’s like the person gets forgotten.
I went to the Chi Omega Market, and I saw another permanent jewelry business that’s based in Fort Worth. I knew there wasn’t anything like this in Lake Highlands. I was like, “What is this? I've seen it once before.” I
wear jewelry all the time, but being a preschool teacher, it’s kind of hard to keep jewelry on. Kids like to yank and pull. I saw it, and I was like, “Oh, that's a really cute idea.” And then when Shauna passed, I knew that this would be amazing. I wanted to start something to help others create those lasting memories.
Every time I did a bracelet, an anklet or a necklace on somebody, I remember Shauna, a teacher here in Lake Highlands who changed so many lives. I tell her story to all of my customers. I didn't want her to be forgotten.
WHY THE NAME “ETERNALLY LINKED”?
I kind of went back and forth for a while on different names. I knew I wanted to incorporate the infinity sign in it. When you weld the two pieces together, it creates an eternal situation. You become “eternally linked.” I sat on it for a while, and I just kept coming back to it. It was just something that meant forever to me.
THE ETERNALLY LINKED LOGO HAS A SPECIAL MEANING. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU?
If you look at it closely, our logo is broken on both sides. The sides represent the two S's in Shauna’s name. The logo is also purple, which is Shauna’s favorite color. Just being able to connect those pieces of her name and favorite things to remember her forever being in our hearts was kind of how the logo stuck.
WHAT PRODUCTS DO YOU OFFER? WHAT IS THE PROCESS LIKE?

I offer necklaces, anklets, bracelets and even rings. If somebody has a wedding ring, and they want to add a band to it or not wear their big diamond ring all the time, they can wear this one. My products come in gold, sterling silver and stainless steel. I added stainless steel in because I had a gentleman who was like, “I'd love to get one but those are too small for me,” and I was like, “You know what, you're right.” They have been a hit ever since. The process is pretty simple. A customer will pick their chain, and I will size it on them. The longest part of the process is deciding on what chain because we have so many options. People can’t just pick one. They end up getting two or three items by the time I am done sizing them. I weld the two pieces of metal together,

connected by a jump ring, with the smallest spark that comes out of a machine. The customer agrees to the sizing, I place it on them, and a few zaps later, it’s done.
WHAT DO YOU HOPE OTHERS GAIN FROM ETERNALLY LINKED?
Memories. A mom who was turning 40 came to me to celebrate her birthday with some friends. For them, it was about the memories. I saw them a couple of weeks later. She said that they would never forget the conversations they had and picking out matching bracelets and necklaces together. I was able to give them a memory that they'll never forget.

The Music Man
Neighborhood native Tom Cooper lived his dream
If you missed Tom Cooper, you missed out. The 1971 LHHS grad passed away recently from cancer, just shy of his 70th birthday, leaving family and friends understandably at a loss — and wistfully nostalgic.
But this is no sad obituary. It’s a salute, a tribute to a neighbor who marched to the beat of his own drum, literally, much to the admiration — and maybe a wink of envy — of those in his orbit.
Many of us never find our life’s passion. Tom did. And even better, he found it early: Music.
Tom’s parents, Grace and Bill Cooper, moved the family to our neighborhood from Houston in the 1960s and made music a constant presence in the household.
“Dad built Heathkits, the DIY and portable radio-turn table assemblies on our dining room table,” Tom’s sister Sue McComb says.
“We listened to albums, show tunes and Broadway music all our lives; we knew the words to everything. It explains how my brother got obsessed with music.”
Later, membership in LHHS’s marching band, and instruction from directors Howard Dunn and Eddie Green, fueled Tom’s music drive. His friendship with LHHS bandmates Richard Burdine, Rush Fielden, Dale McFarland and Mark Roberts led the group to form its own band, Esto la Soza and the Dwindlers.

Where did that name come from?
“We were a glorified garage band and big fans of Frank Zappa,” says Mark, adding the group played in the breezeway at his family’s home, at Dale’s house and at Tom’s. No gigs, just fun he says.
“Zappa had fun with doo-wop and Hispanic culture. We thought he was funny, so we named our band ‘This from the Soda’ after his song ‘Sofa.’”
Sue says Esto la Soza and the Dwindlers was really about friendship and what Tom contributed to the community.
“Esto and those guys were a huge part of his love-of-music journey.”
After graduation, Sue says Tom attended UT Arlington for one semester, and that was that. He bought a used yellow Volvo station wagon, she says, and headed for life on the road as a bandmate. No more college, no more working at Blue Cross Blue Shield, and no more Metzger’s delivery-truck driving.
He landed in Las Vegas, and there, while pursuing music, he worked for LVISD and the LVPD Detention Center. Along the way, he met his wife, Vicki, a 911 operator.
“Tom was a sensational tympanist in high school band and orchestra. He followed his musical dream; I sometimes wish I’d gone on and done something like that,” says Mark, a civil engineer today.
Tom’s early idols included Tower of Power and Chicago, and he toured with some powerhouses himself: Cathy O’Shea, C.C. Jones, Silverwing, Jonas and The Good Fellas.
“Tom was always low-key and not overly gregarious,” Sue says.
“I was off in college, being a flower-child hippie, and then there was my brother: onstage in casinos and caberets. It was a sight to see.
“Tom would play at parties and big events. If he and Vicki walked into a restaurant that had a band, he would sit in on the drums. Vicki would volunteer him, and he always accepted,” she says.
LHHS Class of 1971 1953 - 2023
“Tom was a red head; he was 6’2” and looked like a model. With his fair skin, melanoma progressed quickly,” Sue says.
Cancer claimed Tom, but in his memory, Sue urges neighbors to get regular skin checks.
Survivors include Vicki, Tom’s wife of more than 20 years; two daughters, Rita and Elizabeth; sisters Sue McComb and Cathy Hagood, and soccer-enthusiast grandson M.J. Bauer. Tom had a life-long love of dogs and was devoted to his current dogs, Ninja and Samarai.
Memorial contributions can be made to the SPCA of Texas.

SOMETHING TO QUACK ABOUT
It’s Rocky, the big, yellow duck
Story by RENEE UMSTED | Photography by EMIL LIPPEHe’s 11 feet tall. He weighs about 300 pounds. His top speed might be 15 mph. He’s covered in yellow. Meet Rocky.

ROCKY IS THE SPOKES-DUCK for local nonprofit For the Love of the Lake.
He makes public appearances at the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Lower Greenville, the State Fair of Texas, Fourth of July parades, FTLOTL’s Second Saturday Shoreline Spruce-Ups and other fundraisers.
And husband-wife duo Richard and Lis Akin, Rocky’s wranglers, are in charge of transporting the duck from his “lair” to wherever he’s going for the day. It’s a job they’ve held since 2012.
“I was voluntold,” says Richard, an
engineer at the McCommas Bluff Landfill. But back then, Lis — an investigator for Dallas Fire-Rescue — was executive director of the nonprofit, which is dedicated to preserving and enhancing White Rock Lake Park.

She and her family also have a long history of caring for the environment. Her great-grandfather was assistant secretary of the interior under then-President Teddy Roosevelt, who signed the Antiquities Act of 1906, the first federal law to provide legal protection of cultural and natural resources on federal lands. As a kid, a few
of Lis’ favorite things included stickers and merchandise from the Environmental Protection Agency. And she got her scout troop to recycle.
“In the ’70s, it was unheard of in Dallas,” Lis says.
Rocky’s creator, Doug Frazier, who now lives in Florida, made the Rocky of today after being unhappy with the way the first Rocky turned out, the Akins say. They’ve only seen one photo of the first Rocky, built in 2008. By 2010, Frazier had finished a second Rocky.
They’ll tell you that caring for Rocky,
Or, you could say, if you’re crawling out, it’s giving birth.”Lis and Richard Akin, who live near White Rock Lake, have been Rocky’s “wranglers” for over a decade.
who’s named for White Rock Lake, is not always easy.
The mascot’s body is built on a base that comes from a threewheeled golf cart, circa 1992. So swinging by the local hardware store on the way home just isn’t an option.
Patching up holes on the body is a little simpler and some thing Richard has done count less times. It’s constructed from chicken wire covered in a canvas material that’s been soaked in a combination of water and glue, sort of like papier-mâché.

Rocky looks a lot like a bath toy, but don’t be fooled. It’s the same as many other objects sub merged in White Rock Lake: He can go in the water, but he’ll nev er come out.
It takes about four people to help the duck disembark from the trailer, given his weight. Once he’s on the ground, it’s safe to enter through Rocky’s butt flap.
“So yeah, you get to crawl up the duck’s bum,” Richard says. “Or, you could say, if you’re crawl ing out, it’s giving birth.”
Two adults can fit inside, but it’s tight.
“As you get older, everything doesn’t always bend like it used to,” Lis says.
One person can drive the elec tric duck, and the other can spin his head, all the way around if they want. But it can be hot as Hades in there and not always a smooth ride.
Richard is not just one half of the Rocky wrangling team. He’s also the person who comes up with the FTLOTL-themed messages on the signs at White Rock Lake Park.
One example: “Rocky says, ‘Man made trash. Pick up your trash man.”

FRESH & FRIED

VERONICA NAVARRO has been cooking for almost her entire life.
Having had her first child at a young age, she always had to make sure there was food on the table.
Navarro loved cooking more and more with each dish she prepared. She learned how to cook from her family.
“My dad cooks a lot of Mexican food, so I learned how to cook Mexican food from him,” Navarro says. “My aunt kind of taught me how to cook soul food. We would talk on the phone, and I would ask questions while I was cooking, and she taught me.”
Navarro is no stranger to seafood cuisine. Before owning her first restaurant, Navarro worked as a cashier and cook for nine years at the South Dallas location of Ronnie’s Catfish before franchising her own.
The first Ronnie’s Catfish that Navarro franchises is located in Mesquite. She knew her second location, which opened in December 2020, had to be in Lake Highlands.
“I always wanted to. I just thought that was the perfect location,” Navarro says. “When I worked at the South Dallas location I used to have a lot of customers come from like Plano,

North Dallas and Frisco area, so I just thought having one there will be a little bit closer to them.”

The food at Ronnie’s Catfish is made to order and served fresh. The catfish is available in bone-in or filets (no bone). All catfish meals start at two pieces and can go up to 20 pieces. Party orders can include up to 100 pieces of catfish.

On top of serving catfish, Ronnie’s Catfish also offers a variety of sandwiches, baskets, tails and desserts. Aside from seafood, customers love the pork chop baskets, cheeseburgers and the Texas burger, which is a three-patty burger placed on Texas toast with lettuce, tomato, onion, cheese and pickles, served with fries.
“I just love customers coming in, and when they place their order, they love the food,” Navarro says. “They love the fact that it’s real catfish. There’s not many places that have real Southern catfish.”
Navarro plans to add daiquiris to the menu sometime this summer, but for now, she wants to enjoy cooking catfish and meeting people in Lake Highlands.

“This Ronnie’s Catfish restaurant was probably the best decision I could have made,” Navarro says. “I just love it.”

HATS OFF
Chase and Brynn Heckendorn create the first-ever customizable, interchangeable charm hat

What happens when you mix Crocs with a trucker hat? You get the Swap Top hat.
The idea for Swap Top came to Lake Highlands couple Chase and Brynn Heckendorn one Friday night in January during dinner at Mi Cocina.
They were discussing their three boys and their newest obsessions: Crocs shoes and their charms, Jibbitz. They searched Google during dinner to see if there were any hat apparel companies that incorporated customization with charms. To their surprise, there were no companies to be found.
They knew then that they had found something worth looking into.
“We have three boys who are in elementary school, and they are coming into their appearance. They care about what's trending and what's cool,” Brynn Heckendorn says.
“It is at the forefront of popularity with this age group.”

The next day, the Heckendorns took a trip to Dick’s Sporting Goods. They bought a pair of Crocs and a North Face trucker hat.
By the end of that weekend, the Heckendorns had a prototype for the Swap Top.
“We started cutting the shoes up and putting the hat together,” Chase Heckendorn says. “We just thought the idea of being able to customize a hat with these charms was cool, but we didn't really completely understand the concept on shoes. We thought it would be much cooler on a hat.”
The Heckendorns used prior knowledge from owning other businesses to help launch Swap Top. Before they created Swap Top, they owned a marquee letter rental company called Shout It Dallas.

“That’s how we got started.

We kind of already had that foot in the door because of Shout It. We had worked with outreach, manufacturers and finding people that can take your concept to an actual product,” Brynn Heckendorn says. “We were able to get to work right away messaging people and creating a prototype.”

Despite having experience with creating a product and running a company, the Heckendorns soon realized that Swap Top would have its own difficulties.
“We probably heard about 30 ‘nos’ before we had one person willing to
kind of help us,” Brynn Heckendorn says.
“The hardest thing was reaching out to all the hat manufacturers and getting all these people saying like, ‘No, I'm sorry, we can't help you. It's too different. It's not something that's just straight off the shelf for us,’” Chase Heckendorn says. “They just didn't want to help, and so we kind of had to do that next level of outreach.”
The Heckendorns finally heard a “yes,” and they have been working nonstop ever since. The official
launch for Swap Top was in May. Swap Top has two color options: the Black Top OG and the White Top. Two more products are coming soon: the Cool Cream Swap Top and the Kids 5-7 Swap Top, which will be available in all colors. The Swap Top costs around $35; cost is $28 for the Kids Swap Top.
The hats are designed with seven holes in the front that can be customized with hat charms. You can purchase charm sets from Swap Top that’ll cost about $10 for seven charms.
You can also reuse your Crocs

Jibbitz on Swap Top Hats or purchase different charms from online sellers.

In the future, Swap Top wants to focus on the concept of being a truly personalized gift.

“I don't know if that means that one day, you can go on our website and literally pick seven charms that represent your whoever you're gifting it to, and we'll box it up and ship it or something like that,” Chase Heckendorn says. “But I think we're definitely keeping an open mind to stuff like that.”
