P

edro Lerma was born in Dumas, Texas, a pass-through town from Dallas to Colorado. “Lots of people tell me, ‘We drove there on our way to go skiing,’” he says. He grew up in Wichita Falls. His father worked as a concrete construction worker and his mother in a meatpacking plant. While at Midwestern State University, he started selling airtime to local businesses at a radio station to help pay tuition before working at an agency. “I tell people that at some point, when you grow up in Wichita Falls, and it’s time to move to the big city, you move to Dallas,” Lerma says. “And so, I moved to Dallas.” In the late ‘90s and early 2000s, working at an advertising agency in Dallas was a slick job. Lerma would pour over Ad Age and Adweek. Temerlin McClain, Tracy-Locke and the Bloom Agency were some of the biggest names in advertising. An independently-owned Richards Group was the one everyone was talking about — the most awards, the most press and biggest clients. He decided that’s where he was going to work. His resume was a mock-up of Adweek picturing Lerma with his hands held up in front of the original Richards Group building. The headline: “Lerma joins the Richards Group. Has the competition scrambling.” He got a call back, a few interviews and a job. “And it was really cheesy when I think about it, but it was enough to set me apart,” Lerma says. “I’m not sure that would work on me now.” The dot-com bubble had just burst, and digital advertising was in the early stages. Digital simply meant building websites, banner ads and emails. The Richards Group only had 10 people working on digital advertising, Lerma being one of them. He came up with enough ideas and strategies that he was shifted into a leadership position after a few years. Eventually, the digital group was one of the largest specialized disciplines. “In a lot of ways, it is a blank slate, and from the digital marketing perspective, you could make it whatever you wanted to,” Lerma says. “But I also feel like I was given a blank slate within the organization.” They built a Myspace page for Travelocity. They created a blog for Dr Pepper’s shelf-stable milk Raging Cow and recruited bloggers to write about the product. Call it pre-influencers. “We were really pioneering, breaking new ground, and in a lot of it was really the unknown,” Lerma says. “But it was a great period in my career.” Eventually, digital was unilaterally integrated into departments, and Lerma became a principal at the agency. So in 2009, Stan Richards and Lerma started an offshoot Hispanic-focused agency called Richards Lerma. Their first year, they were $70,000 short of break-even. The agency has been profitable ever since, Lerma says. On the agency’s 10th anniversary in 2019, the agency rebranded to Lerma/ just before the COVID shutdown. And just before Richards made offensive comments in an internal meeting that caused droves of clients to leave. Lerma says he bought out Richards, and several clients like Avocados from Mexico, Inter-

state Batteries and the Salvation Army stayed with him. There were different phases for the agency. There was a time when there was an office with 30 people in Mexico City to support the Chrysler Mexico account, making the team about 95 people. After parting ways with Chrysler Mexico, and with T-Mobile consolidating its marketing efforts after they purchased MetroPCS, Lerma/ staff whittled down to about 40 people. In 2022, Lerma/ won Small Agency of the Year from Ad Age for companies with 15-75 employees and again in 2023 for companies with up to 150 employees. “I feel like there was a point where I used to dream about being part of the Richards Group and seeing them in the press all the time,” Lerma says. “I feel like we’re in that position now. And it’s gratifying.” AdWeek recently recognized Lerma/ as the finalist for multicultural agency of the year. The agency has evolved from being a Hispanic agency to a cross-cultural lead agency. “We feel like we’ve got an advantage and that we started as a multicultural agency and have adapted, I guess what I would say to non-multicultural capabilities and talent,” he says. “And as the market becomes more multicultural, we are in a good position to help clients navigate the more multicultural future.” About 60% percent of the agency’s work is digital, and a good chunk of the remaining percentage is television, radio and outdoor, with a much smaller percentage print work. The agency created three Super Bowl LVII spots. Its annual revenue is sitting at about $30 million, Lerma says. Construction to nearly double the office space, housed in the Lumin building in the West End, from 25,719 square feet to 55,918, is ongoing. The dark industrial space includes a full stage for concerts. Lerma, who wanted to be a drummer, says he was never good enough to make a career out of it. Incidentally, his 16-year-old son is a drummer at Booker T. Washington Arts Magnet High School in Dallas. “He is good enough if he wants to,” Lerma says. “And if he focuses, he’ll be able to make a living doing it.” His wife Jennifer Needham grew up in Wichita Falls and went to Midwestern State University but never met him. Lerma, Needham, their 11-year-old daughter, son and four dogs live in the house Clifford Hutsell designed for himself on Lakewood Boulevard. The first time Lerma saw the home, he was driving down the street. He saw one of his colleagues from the Richards Group in the front yard. He spent an hour learning about the history and looking at a restored mural. In 2022, he bought a Hutsell four doors down, but there were homebuyers interested in buying the house he just bought. Then he heard that Clifford’s Hutsell was possibly for sale. He sold the first house before even living in it and bought Clifford’s house. “I would drive down that street dreaming and looking at these homes, these beautiful homes, the tree-lined streets,” he says. “I remember being a child and seeing those kinds of streets where the trees would meet over the street and it just felt magical. And that’s what you have in Lakewood.”

The neighborhood patisserie bakes all of its confections inhouse, including team favorites like cinnamon “cruffin” brioche feuillette, apricot verbena danish and a mushroom focaccia. Weinstein’s idea for the bakery began while living in New York, where she grew up and began raising her now-teenage daughter Ashley Sage, an aspiring baker herself. The m o t h e r- d a u g h t e r p a i r s p e n t their time trying out New York City’s award-winning bakeries, feeling inspired by the kouignamann at Patisserie Chanson. With one bite of the flaky, salty and sweet pastry, they made the decision — the Weinsteins were opening a bakery. “It was just super sweet but also salty at the same time, and we joked that it was similar to [Ashley’s] personality,” Weinstein says. “I decided to sign up at the Institute of Culinary Education and found Jill.” Weinstein paired with Bates, an East Dallas neighbor and former exec utive pastr y chef at Fearing’s at The Ritz Carlton Dallas. While Weinstein was flying back and forth from New Yo rk t o D a l l a s i n p u r s u i t o f opening a bakery in the Preston Hollow area, Bates worked for m o n t h s w i t h re n o w n e d ch e f Michael Laiskonis on each recipe, perfecting them while still being approachable and

organically developed. “I have the most creative team, and we talk every day about what ideas we have,” Bates says. “Menu development was a lot of sitting back and being able to think about how I can make this better, and of course, that’s what we do every day.” The bright and open bakery also partners with Noble Coyote Coffee, a Dallas-based micro-roaster. The baristas are armed with an Aremde espresso maker, the first of its kind in Dallas. The baristas can whip up any typical coffeehouse creation, plus specialties like the aptly named Brown Sugar Sage Latte. “[It’s] very high-end, very beautiful and this crowd appreciates that,” Weinstein says. “But also in order for them to dive in, we needed to make it a bit more approachable. A place that was warm and welcoming, where the quality is exceptional, but it’s also just a place to feel good.” The pair recently added an outdoor patio to the patisserie — something hard to come by on Lovers Lane. The patio is in the back of the shop and features a shaded area fit with bright seating, a freshly painted mural and twinkling lights. You’ ll find moms with extravagant strollers here early in the morning, followed by rushes during breaks for high schoolers and college kids getting their caffeine fix and work-from-homers lining the tables with laptops and headphones. “It has become a bit of an oasis,” Weinstein says. CRAFTED RESTORATION A Junius Heights home unattached to its foundation or history Story by JEHADU ABSHIRO

18 lakewood.advocatemag.com NOVEMBER 2023

T

here was a time in Leslie Nepveux’s life where she was living in Phoenix with her Oklahoma State University sweetheart and designing Spanish and Mission Revival Catholic Churches. Nepveux, who also did some commercial and university housi n g w o rk , o cc a s i o n a l ly d a b b l e d i n residential projects. “And I realized how much I loved it,” Nepveux says. “Because a home is really similar to a church. It’s a very intimate place.” In 2013, she came to Dallas for a yearlong fellowship w i t h B u i l d i n gco m m u n i ty WO R K S H O P, a n o n p ro fi t firm aiming to improve the livability of high-need neighborhoods through design. The Nepveux family decided to stay and they bought a 100-year-old Junius Heights house. There’s something about a century-old craftsman. There’s a small footprint, but move a wall or two, it can become functional. “I like taking something that’s existing, and figuring out the new puzzle of how to make it work for today’s lifestyle,” Nepveux says. “I think a lot of people don’t give old houses a lot of credit.” She started working on a friend’s home in the neighborhood. Then another. And very organically, she became the person to call if you needed to restore your Junius Heights home. “We have a lot of history in architecture,” she says. “ We w a n t t o re m e m b e r w h e re w e w e re , a n d t o s e e where we’re going.” Nepveux had found her niche — old homes who need a lot of love. Six years ago, she started the firm VeuxDuex Designs, which specializes in restoration. Her husband Nick joined the firm two years ago, right about the time a couple who owns a 103-year-old Dumont Street home reached out. Originally a 3-bedroom, 2-bath craftsman, built in 1921 as part of the Munger Place Revision, it had been stripped of its character through multiple renovations and owners. At one point, it was a duplex. Since the orginal mantle no longer existed, VeuxDuex Design custom built a mantle with stained maple. NOVEMBER 2023 lakewood.advocatemag.com

Historic preservation requirements are stricter for corner lots, making adding an addition more complicated.

“ They definitely wanted craftsman character and detail in everything that we put back in the house,” she says. The windows were removed and restored. Early in the construction they found brick under the house that was e ventually added to the fireplace. Subway tile in the bathroom. He x a go n a l t i l e o n t h e f l o o r s . It’s not often a historic renovation makes it onto the AIA home tour. It’s usually sleek, spacious modern homes with clever construction tricks and plenty of natural light. “It’s important that this historic home is on the tour to show a different type of home,” Nepveux says. “ You don’t have to have an architect to build a house. We can often help find solutions to problems that others might not be able to solve. We see things that other people don’t.”

ngela O’Brien understood that motherhood would be an entirely new learning experience requiring lots of work. After having one child, O’Brien was thrilled to learn she’d be growing her family to four with a daughter. But shortly after her daughter, Casey, was born, O’Brien was informed Casey had Down syndrome. She had no prior knowledge of w h a t ra i s i n g a ch i l d w i t h D o w n s y n d r o m e l o o k e d l i k e . Fe a r i n g the unknown, O’Brien did all the research she could to provide her daughter with the life and resources she would need to be successful.

“I just remind [parents] to not worry about their child because they’re all going to be okay.” “In some ways, I had to grieve the expectations I had for my child,” she says. “In the beginning I felt so alone. The small town we lived in before coming to Dallas didn’t expose me to other families with special needs.” During moments she felt alone, O’Brien read all the books she could find on parenting a kid with special needs. It wasn’t until Casey was about six months old when she joined a special needs support group. “I just felt like I could breathe again, because I didn’t feel so alone,” she says. O’Brien began volunteering at the Down syndrome clinic at Children’s Medical Center, meeting with famiContact Us sales@advocatemag.com lies who recently received a diagnosis, providing them with information and a support network. “Sometimes I’m the first parent

that they’re meeting, so they’re able to ask me questions about what parenting looks like,” she says. “I just remind them to not worry about their child because they’re all going to be okay.” Casey’s diagnosis was a blessing in disguise. O’Brien can’ t envision what her family’s life would’ ve looked like had Casey not been diagnosed with Down syndrome. It has made their life much more meaningful. Without their daughter they would have never moved to Dallas, made connections and create lifelong friendships. Although things were progressing, O’Brien continuously feared for her daughter. She worried about school, bullying, classroom resources and more. Could she find an elementary school with teachers that met Casey’s needs? At times, she was told to consider s ch o o l s s p e c i a l i z i n g i n t e a ch i n g children with special needs. Nonetheless, O’Brien persevered. She enrolled Casey in a private elementary school in Castle Hills, where she’d be the first female with Down syndrome to attend the school. It was important to O’Brien for Casey to receive the same education as other students, in the same classroom, with the same teacher. When it came time for Casey to attend Kindergar ten, O’Brien enrolled her like every other student. “I actually didn’t call the school and set up an IEP or meeting, I just enrolled her and went up [there] like everybody else,” O’Brien says. It was her expectation that she attend kindergarten with her peers. She had everything ready like every o t h e r p a r e n t o n t h e f i r s t d ay o f school. She even had a team of allies in the neighborhood supporting her in Casey attending Castle Hills. It was a great time for them, and Casey didn’t mind being around students who were not like her. natively, she thrived being amongst other kids with special needs. And so, The Notre Dame School of Dallas came into the picture. O’Brien met various families of special needs children. It was after speaking with a group of mothers in January it dawned on her to make a podcast. In 2015, O’Brien searched high and low for a podcast that shared her vision but found none. As a result Especially Organized was born. The podcast is dedicated towards educating parents and providing them with a community. What started as a passion project has captivated a large audience of parents seeking organization, inspiration and community. “It’s really to help special needs parents get organized so that they can reclaim whatever it is that they need,” she said. “ There’s no other podcast out there that is dedicated to focusing on helping special needs parents get organized, my goal really is to build a community.” The podcast is gaining popularity from parents, faculty and podcasters online since starting. O’Brien says she always felt like she was meant to do something more. At the time she was a stay-at-home mom, doing normal things, helping out where she could and for a while, it was a struggle. It wasn’t until Casey came into her life, she’d find a new purpose and a gift she never knew she had. It’s a rewarding journey, not just parenting but being able to provide a community for parents whose children have special needs. O’Brien is continuously learning from other parents and their children. She continues advocating for her daughter and providing resources for families at The Notre Dame School of Dallas. “I don’ t want to stop learning,” she says.

oodrow Wilson High School has a long history with JROTC. The school has had a program since its founding in 1928, leading the nation with the largest program until the 1950s, which had 16 companies and a band. Though the program is smaller today, this year’s cadets experienced a 158% increase in enrollment — something Woodrow Wilson JROTC educator Sergeant Major Arturo Martínez attributes to support from the school’s administration and community. “We think it’s the concerted effort of the teamwork going

Much of this curriculum aligns with Common Core State Standards and Career and Technical Education clusters, granting core credits. Students who chose it as an elective receive a physical

Dallas ISD’s JROTC program hosts a four-day summer camp that exposes students to robotics, cyber security, archery and obstacle courses. “It’s pretty noticeable how these young students come into the program and through the different activities such as robotics, the drones, the cybersecurity, the color guard … all of those things develop different aspects in the students,” Martínez says. For some Woodrow students, enrolling in the program is a pathway to higher ranks in the military. “The main reason I joined is because I wanted to go into the Air Force,” says Mia Alvarado, a senior at Woodrow. “I fell in love with the program … We learned so much about ourselves that we never knew. Like me, for example, I didn’t know that I was good with the rifle until I started shooting with it. Or I was good at helping other people out until I joined this program.” Others join for the competition and elective oppor tunities, or the opportunity to learn to get out of their shell. “ This program is beneficial for everyone,” Arturo Rodriguez says, a junior at Woodrow. “I think everybody should join for one year or semester just to get the experience … this can change your trajectory and give you a new perspective.”

New frame of mind The nature of White Rock Lake is captured by self-taught photographer, Adam Velte. Story by SIMON PRUITT | Photography by BRAD EVANS

G R E E N S P O T D O U B L E S as a gas station and an eco-friendly convenience store. Look closely, and you’ ll find a number of beautiful prints on the walls, each immortalizing a moment in nature around White Rock Lake. Those photographs were all taken by the same man, Adam Velte, a self-taught virtuoso who’s been managing the store for 15 years. “I’ve been quiet about having my art on the wall here,” he says from behind the smokescreen of a steaming vanilla latte from Green Spot’s espresso bar. “Mostly because I’ve never really curated any kind of art space or anything myself.”

34 lakewood.advocatemag.com NOVEMBER 2023

Velte is no stranger to the art world, though, learning to paint and draw as an elementary student and showcasing his work at local art shows. “I suppose I was doing something right,” he says. “I would always find myself in these art shows.” His visual arts career petered out after grade school, and he shifted his creative outlet to music production as an adult. In 2015, his love for the visual realm was rekindled. “My dad had been carrying around my old artwork from elementary school for decades,” Velte says. “I thought they were trashed

years ago. He brought them home to me, and I was really touched by that sentimental act. I framed it all and put it on my walls at home.” Feeling inspired, Velte took to the neighborhood to find beautiful scenes to photograph. These days, his equipment of choice is a Fujifilm X-T3, a high-end mirrorless digital camera. When he first set out to photograph on his own, his equipment was of circumstance — his cell-phone. “These are more like cameras with phones on them,” he jokes, holding up his iPhone. “I was really enjoying this technology that’s so convenient. The more shots you take, the more you can learn composition and what you’re doing right or wrong. I had a lot of practice with this thing before I picked up an actual digital camera.” Velte typically sets off around White Rock Lake, primed with inspiration and searching for the place to put it. In the years removed since his initial journey, his subjects have evolved. “I’ve gone from shooting landscapes to shooting more birds and animals,” he says. “Every season, there’s new birds after one goes away.” Over time, that process has become part of Velte’s daily routine. “It helps me decompress, de-stress and wake up,” he says. “Just for the primal side and shedding away the modern world. Who am I really? Let’s go out into nature and find out.” Finding out is exactly what he’s done, leaving behind a beautiful legacy of photos shot with passion in its purest form. Recently, he was featured in Lake Highlands Presbyterian Church’s community art exhibition, his first public show since returning to the field. In it, he displayed all of his best shots from around the local environment. Art feels like an inevitability once it’s found an artist. No matter how far away Velte was removed from the medium, it flowed through his blood and courses through his muscles. After years of unuse, he’s happy to be flexing them again. “It’s keeping me busy and inspired day after day,” he says.
