A TRAIL-BUILDING RENAISSANCE
East Dallas neighbor Robert Kent turned a passion for outdoors into a park planning career Story by ALYSSA HIGH Photography by VICTORIA GOMEZ

G
rowing up in Lake Highlands as an avid member of Boy Scout Troop 890, Robert Kent’s childhood was immersed in the outdoors. “I got to go spend some really wonderful formative experiences in the outdoors both in high adventure backpacking treks through Rocky Mountain National Park and more local things like our annual triathlon along White Rock Green Belt,” Kent says. “After five or six years in a row training for that, it instilled in me a deeper appreciation for the outdoors.” So much so, he says, that Kent went to college and aimed to get a job in international development with an environmental focus, hoping to help build sustainable economies in developing nations. “Life has different paths that take you in different directions,” he says. Graduating during the 2008 Great Recession landed him a chance to dive back into the outdoors. “I ended up taking six months to backpack the Appalachian Trail end-to-end, which is about 2,100 miles from Maine to Georgia,” Kent says. “That’s just one of those formative experiences outdoors that really developed a deep appreciation and passion for our connection to nature and how important it is for everyone to be able to experience nature close to home.” Kent returned to Dallas and landed a job at the North Texas Commission as their environmental program director. “Within about six months of being back in Dallas, I realized that this was exactly where I needed to be,” Kent says. “I didn’t need to travel halfway around the world. There’s plenty of opportunity to do it right here in Dallas, in our own backyard.” Three years after accepting the job with the North Texas Commission, Trust for Public Land was preparing to open their Dallas office and Kent put himself up for the job. Trust for Public Land is a national nonprofit organization that works with local parks and recreation departments to purchase land to create parks and ensure that everyone lives within a 10-minute walk of a park or trail. Kent was first hired to reopen TPL’s Dallas office and reestablish the nonprofit’s presence in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. From there, he was promoted to the Texas State Director. His role at TPL has changed over the years. Historically, Kent says, the nonprofit has been about land acquisition — buying land, setting it aside for conservation purposes and working with public agencies like the Dallas Parks and Recreation Department or the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. “In the last half of our history, we’ve also had a focus on really urban parks and not only buying the land, but also doing design and development work,” Kent says. “From that, we’ve developed a really strong planning practice.” Trust for Public Land established a project called Smart Growth for Dallas, a data mapping platform that examines factors like urban heat islands, health disparities, equity indicators, soil types and flood zones to determine where parks are most needed and possible locations for said parks. “ When you have a park close to home and you make an
investment in some type of green infrastructure, whether it’s a park or a trail or trees, that can have positive benefits for the environment, public health and communities,” Kent says. Two notable projects that the group has worked on is the South Oak Cliff Renaissance Park, a 1.8 acre neighborhood park across from South Oak Cliff High School and the Five Mile Creek Greenbelt. “ ( S o u t h O a k C l i ff Re n a i ss a n c e Pa rk i s ) a re a l ly co o l project where the neighborhood and the school had this vacant piece of land across from the high school that had been used as a place to dump tires and as a place where people were camping out or kids were skipping school. The grass was overgrown up to your shoulders. Every day when the bell rang, kids were walking from the school across this overgrown, dirty, littered, vacant field to go home,” Kent says. “ The park was designed in partnership with the high school and with the nearby residents and neighbors, so ever y feature in that park is reflective of some need that the community identified." South Oak Cliff Renaissance Park opened in November of 2021, now a “well-loved, central piece of that community.” Five Mile Creek Greenbelt, on the other hand, has been a long time in the making and still has a bit of work to go. The 17-mile trail aims to connect much of Oak Cliff and Southern Dallas along the already existing watershed. “Oak Cliff has got the most pretty land in Dallas, and that’s because it is the northmost edge of the Balcones Escarpment (the eastern boundary of the Texas Hill Country that gives Oak Cliff its hills and cliff-like structures),” Kent says. “When you’re driving through the area, these big hills and valleys have these commanding views over Downtown Dallas, which is surprising considering at this point you’re a good eight to 10 miles south of Downtown.” Plans for the project started as early as the 1940 s, and Kent hopes to realize that nearly 80-year-old dream. “Within the community around Five Mile Creek, there’s a great hunger for this type of amenity,” Kent says. “Dallas is undergoing a trail-building renaissance. It’s wonderful … The Five Mile Creek Trail is going to be that connection that will finally connect Oak Cliff to the rest of the city.” Kent aims to break ground on the project in 2025. In the meantime, the nonprofit is focused on raising money and starting the design process so that the trail could be open by 2030. Aside from Trust for Public Land, parks are still a huge par t of the Kent family’s e ver yday life. T he Eas t Dallas residents frequent Casa Linda Park with their two young children. “ Visiting the park regularly is a huge part of our life,” Kent says. “Particularly during COVID and the aftermath of that. It was a daily occurrence when the clock struck five, you better believe we are pushing the stroller and walking toward that park … Spending time outside is so important for childhood development.”

NO SKATEPARK FOR GLENCOE Residential development proposed for Glencoe Park church site Story by SAM GILLESPIE
16 lakewood.advocatemag.com FEBRUARY 2024
E
nding months of community debate, Rudy Karimi, District 14 Park Board member, and the staff at Dallas Parks and Recreation have decided to end the pursuit of a skate park in Glencoe Park, Karimi announced on Facebook. The $500,000 skate park was to have been included in the allocation for Dallas Parks in the 2024 Bond election. Karimi hopes to keep the $500,000 skate park in the allocation but “moved to a park outside of council District 14 to be named later.” Other skate park initiatives at Westmoreland Park and Lakeland Hills Park remain in the bond allocation and have strong neighborhood support. Along with se veral community meetings, Karimi says he and Max Sanchez of Councilman Paul Ridley’s office closely monitored the communication to determine levels of opposition and support. “90% of the communication received was in support of the skate park, but 80% of the communication from the neighborhoods near Glencoe was against the idea,” Karimi said. “ W h i l e w e m ay h av e f a i l e d i n bringing a skate amenity to council District 14, we failed in the most daring and gutsy way — and that is the best way to fail if you ask me,” wrote Karimi in his Facebook post. “ The bright side is we followed the process, we listened to our constituents, produced a tremendous amount of advocacy (RADvocacy) for skate parks, and we are still pushing for three of them in the 2024 Bond, which is absolutely unprecedented in any previous city bond. That is still a heck of a lot to be proud of.” In an interview following the decision, Karimi noted that the parks in District 14 are neighborhood parks, ranging 8 -16 acres in size. S kat e parks are be tter suited for larger parks of which there are none in District 14. This perspective is mostly shared b y Te r i E r v i n , a G re e n l a n d Hi l l s

resident who actively opposed the Glencoe location. “I’m happy with the decision,” Er vin said. C i ty leadership did not initially look to interact with the nearby neighborhood associations when the idea of a Glencoe skate park first bubbled up. “I hope the City learned something,” Ervin says. The formula for a successful skate park, according to Haley, revolves around accessibility and visibility and Glencoe Park fits the bill. “I’m grateful to Rudy Karimi and Dallas Parks and Recreation for trying to locate a skate park in East Dallas or Central Dallas,” Haley says. Haley did lament the difficulty of including young families and young professionals in these community conversations. “How can we involve younger Central Dallas citizens in these debates since they will be the ones to use these amenities?” Haley said.

brick exterior is unassuming. The Kiwi-inspired restaurant is tucked in between Trader Joe’s and Japanese grill Manpuko. The brainchild of chef and owner Toby Archibald, it’s all coastal cozy New Zealand vibes, and its concise menu is a deliberate experience. The revolving menu offers just six appetizers, four sharing plates, six entrees and four desserts. It’s a little bit of
everything. Dishes are created with centerpiece ingredients like striploin, winter roots and quail. Archibald says intentionality plays a pivotal role in each menu or drink creation. Often, items are inspired by something he ate in his childhood or in his travels. “We have a rabbit dish on the menu right now that’s inspired 100% from a staff meal we ate in London every week,” he says. “This was something (the French staff ) grew up eating

as kids … I always loved that dish, so the dish on our menu is a much more refined version of that.” And occasionally, there’s an unconventional menu item that simply just works well. “Sometimes, there’s no story,” Archibald says. “There’s always a story,” interjects a staff member. “Well, let me tell you a story about pickled beets,” Archibald starts. “When I was little, I would always eat bacon and eggs in my grandparents’ house. Every time, my granddad would eat pickled beetroot with his bacon and eggs. As a kid, I was like, ‘I just want the eggs and I want the bacon.’ Then, as you get older and your palate changes … It's delicious. So whenever I eat a pickled beet, I always think of my granddad.” Originally, Archibald went to culinary school because he “really liked to eat” and “always wanted to see the world.” “And then I got into it and I loved it. I
liked the passion in the kitchen,” he says. “I like the artistic side of the kitchen. I liked the knowledge (we shared) together.” Since 2006, he’s been living and working outside of New Zealand. His first stop was London, where he worked at a Michelin-starred restaurant for three years. “That was a big eye-opener for me,” Archibald says. “As a young chef, you think you’ve got it all figured out in New Zealand and then you go out into this big wide world and people just cook circles around you. Which is good, very good, for so much knowledge.” Archibald’s next step was to keep working and save money, so he did what many international chefs do in the early stages of their careers — work on yachts in the Mediterranean. “That was good fun, just like a TV show,” he says. But the goal was New York City. How-
20 lakewood.advocatemag.com FEBRUARY 2024
ever, VISAs were restricted because of the recession of the late 2000s, and the closest he could get was Vancouver or Toronto. He first worked in Vancouver for Danielle Bullets Restaurant Group, but only stayed for a few months before returning to yachts to scrounge up more money. Yacht chefs make more on average than land-based chefs and with nearly all living expenses taken care of and a regular view of the Mediterranean, it’s an easy pitch. While on vacation in Canada, Archibald ran into a former colleague from London who was the sous chef for a Dinex restaurant in Toronto. He knew about an open sous chef position at the Four Seasons. His time for New York City had come. He started at the Four Seasons’ Café Boulud. Then he took another pivotal vacation. This time to Chicago where he met his wife. “I had a very whirlwind romance. She came to New York a couple of times, I went to Chicago a couple of times, and then we
agreed to move to Australia together and that’s what we did,” he says. “We’d been in each other's physical company for 10 days, and we moved to Australia together.” Archibald worked as a head chef for Matt Moran on Bondi Beach, an experience he describes as a “beautiful location, strong seafood and really good fun.” After almost a year in Australia, Archibald proposed to his now wife in front of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The two got engaged and headed to Dallas, where his wife’s family lives. “She’s a smart woman,” Archibald says. “She realized very quickly that if she was going to be my wife and if I was going to be a husband, we would need a good game plan for wanting to have kids and any sense of normality in our lives. So (we moved) back here with her support system, I got my green card and I started working.” Archibald was part of the opening team at Downtown’s French Bullion Restaurant before getting picked up to be the executive chef at Curtis Stone’s Georgie. When the pandemic hit, Archibald decided that it was time to find some investors and open his own place — an upscale restaurant in Lowest Greenville with nods to his roots and culinary experiences. “So many places have a really, really pretty room or beautiful uniforms,” he says. “But as far as the food goes, quite often, it’s an afterthought. It shouldn’t be, not in a really good restaurant … I wanted to bring a restaurant to Dallas where the food was definitely thought out.” Though the restaurant just celebrated its one-year mark with a frequently filled dining room, Archibald says that Dallas’ dining scene still has a long road to healing from the pandemic. “We’re a little restaurant doing big restaurant things,” Archibald says. “We do great service. We do free bread. Free lollies at the end of the meal. We’re trying to achieve all of that on this tiny, little budget and I’m really, really proud of what we’ve achieved (in our first year).”

T roupe collects shoes year-round, but during a one-month mission each December, he begins every day by loading up his silver Jeep with over 100 shoe pairs, from a size 8.5 women’s pink tennis shoe to a size 11.5 men's gray tennis shoe. Then, he’s ready for his drive around Dallas. This season was his most successful shoe collection yet, with almost 2,000 pairs of shoes, surpassing Troupe’s original goal of 1,000 shoe pairs collected. It’s been a good run these past few years, but the start of Lakewood’s Shoe Guy wasn’t always this organized. On Dec. 1, 2008, Lakewood resident Ken Troupe was lying in bed listening to the radio when a segment discussing “the true meaning of Christmas” caught his attention. Troupe lay there pondering the question of what the time of year really meant. After a moment of reflection, he had an

“aha moment.” “I have all these old shoes, I bet I can ask my friends to donate shoes and I can try to collect 100 pairs of shoes and give them out,” he says. He started by emailing the Park Cities running group. Troupe received 250 pairs of shoes that first year. It was as simple as that, he says. So a new holiday tradition had begun. From Oct. 1 to late January, Troupe began collecting shoes and broadcasting the shoe drive through Facebook, Dallas running groups, neighbors and local organizations to see if anyone has shoes or socks to donate. The support was not what he had expected in his first year. With a garage flooded with men's and women's shoes of all sizes, his dream was now a reality. Troupe grabbed his backpack and stuffed it with shoes, hopped on his bike, and rode from his home on La Vista to downtown Dallas, looking for people to help. “I must have put 10 or 12 pairs of shoes in this backpack and just went down there riding around not really knowing what I was doing or where I was going,” he says. “And then, they just started calling me the Shoe Guy.” Giving out shoes and developing relationships with homeless people gave him a sense of purpose, he says. It was unlike any other satisfaction he could have gained from his time working in sales for Texas Rangers, or teaching business at Southern Methodist University. As he wrapped up his first year of being the Shoe Guy, he was asked: “Are you going to do that again?” With hundreds of shoe donations sitting in his garage, and a growing homeless population, Troupe was ready for year two, but he was going to need help. So in 2009, Suzanne Woodling came into the picture as the Shoe Gal in Dallas. Woodling, who Troupe met in 1998 while managing tickets for the Texas Rangers, says she called Troupe to complain about her tickets. Strangely enough, the two got to talking, hit it off and have been best friends since.

Since joining the Shoe Guy for his holiday drives, Woodling says the experience has been both eye-opening and humbling. “We live in our little bubble … We are in a community where we’re very fortunate that we can wear shoes for a little while and donate when we’re done, and that’s not their experience by any stretch,” Woodling says. There is nothing like being at the forefront of the shoe cycle, Troupe says. While the two say they could easily go to a shelter and drop off shoes, it’s just not the same as being there to see a person on the streets smile and wear the shoes. While packaging the hundreds of sneakers, Woodling becomes choked up reminiscing over one of her most memorable moments doing this. There were two gentlemen sitting on the steps in Downtown eating oranges, Wood ling says. She asked them if they needed a pair of sneakers, one guy re p ly i n g h e w a s fi n e w h i l e t h e o t h e r said yes. “I give him the shoes, and he’s like ‘Can I give you an orange?’” Woodling says, trying to compose herself from crying. “He was giving me the only food that he had … for a used pair of sneakers.” While she declined the orange, Woodling says that moment convinced her she was doing something purposeful.

Suzanne Woodling grabs a men's pair of shoes to give to a homeless individual in Downtown Dallas on Christmas Eve.
“You don’t have to solve the world as a resident of Dallas, but if you could just find one way every once in a while to give back a little bit … I think the city would be a better place,” Troupe says. It has been rewarding to create something like the Shoe Guy and the Shoe Gal to provide Dallas people with an easy avenue to give back and help homeless individuals, he says. Muhammad, one of the individuals who received a pair of shoes from the Shoe Gal, calls Woodling a “blessing,” as the two of them share a laugh over their newfound relationship next to Troupe’s Jeep. Troupe says they’re always going to donate shoes through their mobile shoe distribution. The Shoe Guy and Shoe Gal kept distributing shoes until Jan. 10, despite the holiday season being over. For three hours a day, four days a week, the two load up the Jeep with roughly a hundred pairs of shoes crammed into the backseat of the car. In just five minutes of being on Downtown streets, 10 people with and without shoes flocked to the car shouting their shoe size. They know the drill. The Jeep then circles throughout Dallas, going anywhere from City Hall to the 7-Eleven off Main Street. And within less than an hour, the Jeep is emptied.

How a neuroscience PhD candidate started a Casa Linda plant shop Story by LILLIAN JUAREZ | Photography by LAUREN ALLEN
26 lakewood.advocatemag.com FEBRUARY 2024
L
upita Rios had it all planned out. Graduate from Bryan Adams High School. Move from East Dallas to Providence, Rhode Island. Graduate from Brown University. Go to UT Southwestern’s Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Get a PhD in neuroscience. Become a professor. The only thing she hadn’t planned for was the anxiety. As a way to cope with life after undergrad, Rios started caring for plants. She enjoyed propagating and growing them in a self-built backyard greenhouse. Then she started making pots for the plants she was growing. “And little by little I started giving them away and people were like, ‘Wait, this is so cute. This is so neat. You should try selling it,’” Rios says. Her creativity was invigorated and perhaps more importantly, her anxiety eased. “It was very healing for me,” she says. In 2019, Rios launched a pop-up, really a small table with pots and plants, outside Bishop Arts District’s CocoAndre. It was named Pita’s Planters, after her family’s pet name for her. “It was kind of like a hobby that turned into a business,” she says. “It brought so much joy to me when I was going through a really difficult time and I really thought I wouldn't feel joy again… Plants tend to be that for a lot of people. It's like a way to connect with nature again and a way to heal.” One year later, Pita’s Planters moved into a 16-foot-wide mobile trailer, often parked at the farmers market, with the help of her boyfriend David Hernadez. Also a Bryan Adams alum, he had been helping with pop-ups and helping make pots. Sales were increasing, Lupita was managing the company and still working towards a PhD in neuroscience full time. She couldn’t do it alone. So Hernandez, who was working in commercial construction and did fitness training on the side, suggested he quit his job, and they move on from the trailer to look for a brickand-mortar store. Hernandez, a University of Texas Moody College of Communication alum, says he was never satisfied with the idea of a nine-to-five job post-grad. In September 2023, the small green shop opened its storefront in Casa Linda Plaza, less than two miles from Bryan Adams High School, where the couple first met, and just 10 minutes from their home. If you told Hernadez that he’d be co-owning a plant shop as a full-time job, he probably would have

looked at you crazy. “The two of us had no idea what we were doing,” he says. Insight from his brother, the owner of C heesesteak House in Garland, and his gym coach, Brent Carter who owns Starting Strength Dallas, helped. Since opening, the shop has attrac ted local residents to international shoppers visiting the website. There are over 100 plant varieties to choose from, plus pots made from upcycled glass bottles, crochet plants, locally-made jewelry, mugs, dried decorative flowers and stationery. Whitney Gonzales, best friend and former lab partner from J.L. Long Middle School says she was thrilled when she heard Rios was opening a store. A fellow plant enthusiast (she owns over 40 plants), Gonzales says she’s been amazed by all the store has to offer. “ The fact that she handmakes pretty much everything like her pots, I like that,” Gonzales says. “That’s why I buy from her, because I know that they’re not mass-produced.” Hernandez says Rios has always been the “go-getter” for the establishment, continuously pushing the business to grow every day. “She was the one making moves like, ‘Hey let’s get this done. Let’s get going. We need to get this done by this day.’ And kind of kicking my ass into gear,” Hernandez says as he jokes he was just along for the ride. Rios’ drive is credited to her great-aunt in Guatemala, L aura Lidia Martinez, who raised her for 12 years. Before Rios moved to the U.S. to be with her biological mother, her great-aunt would make tortillas and snacks to sell at the mercado for a living. “I wanted to make her proud and follow in her footsteps,” she says. And, yes, she’s still on track to get her PhD in neuroscience, with just two years left. Next, is becoming a professor. Pita’s Planters is just part of the plan now.

The Kings close a late-night set at the Balcony Club.
“You have to dance your way in!” shouts a man seated at a picnic table outside, and it’s immediately clear that he’s right. There’s no lane to walk in through, no side door to sneak in the back. If you want to get inside, you’ll have to commit to the party. Reveler’s Hall is packed to the brim. Swelling brass, crashing drums and a thumping bass serve as the heartbeat to a crowd that’s beginning to spill out onto Bishop Avenue. A roaring guitar gives way to a long keyboard solo, and for a moment, it seems this chaos is all but orchestrated. But then you hear the voice. It’s a razor-sharp alto bellowing out of a broad man with an undone bowtie and navy suit jacket matching all the musicians backing him. His name is Kraig Loyd, an East Dallas resident, they are called The Rosemont Kings. Tonight, as always, they are bringing the house down. Loyd matches an irreplaceable voice with his magnetic stage presence, it’s tough to tell which came first. Pharmacist by day, he grew up singing in church and had a brief stint as a recording artist with an RnB album released in 2012. He joined The Rosemont Kings in 2018, when the project was more of an inside joke between neighbors than a real performing act. “My house has an extra guest bedroom we rarely use,” says Bart Thrasher, guitar-
32 lakewood.advocatemag.com FEBRUARY 2024
ist. “I convinced my wife to set up a drum kit, PA, and guitar and bass rigs. I was so excited. I went outside and two doors down some neighbors were hanging out on Richie Heffernan's porch.” They live on Rosemont Avenue, in the Winnetka Heights Historic District of Oak Cliff. “I asked everybody to come to my house to check out my jam room,” Thrasher says. “Richie said ‘I can play drums’, and Robbie Good said ‘You know I play bass?’. The chemistry was instant, and we started having regular jam sessions. Our wives kept saying ‘Enough, get out.’ We called ourselves The Doghouse at first.” It was a neighborhood operation, and the group knew that everything they did should reflect that. They began to go by The Rosemont Kings soon after. Quickly, their jam sessions turned into songwriting, as the trio began to piece together a number of instrumental tracks. “It was magical,” says Robbie Good, bass. “By the time Kraig came in a few months later, we had six or seven originals which he added some vocals over. The Rosemont Kings were officially born.” The Kings knew they had something special, their musical aspirations angling towards a musically-wide, funk party band. But as it stood, the production behind it had the bones of a conventional rock band; guitar, drums, bass and vocals. They had to get bigger. Loyd invited trumpeter Ed Wagner to
join the band. Thrasher invited keyboardist Brad Taylor, then Taylor invited saxophonist Jacob Frie and Frie invited trombonist Jay Hatler. Through a neighborly game of musical telephone, a full Rosemont Kings lineup was born. They got in the studio to record what would become their self-titled debut album, released in 2023. The record features 10 original tracks, drawing heavily from the songwriting of modern soul artists like Charles Bradley and Lee Fields, mixed with sonics that play like a high-energy version of Houston jam trio, Khruangbin. Their most streamed song, Easy Love, is a sweet, romantic anthem perfect for when you have a special someone by your side to dance with. The second song on the album, Weekend Kind of Love, is the opposite, a playfully vain track for when you don’t. The band hits its stride on Six Feet Down, when female background vocals are incorporated to a carefully frenetic pace. It’s a crowd favorite, along with the braggadocious Rosemont Groove, where the Kings remind you where they came from. Crowds adore The Rosemont Kings. They’ve become celebrated regulars at Reveler’s Hall and Balcony Club, two of the city’s predominant jazz clubs. Getting the group together enough to become regulars and record an al-
bum is a feat of its own. “It’s not easy but we make it work,” says trombonist Jay Hatler says. “We sometimes send recordings back and forth via text or email with different musical ideas. On one of the most recent songs we’ve written, I sent a text recording to Kraig and Robbie of a horn line I came up with. Kraig sent me back lyrics, Robbie came up with a bass line and we put it together in the next rehearsal.” Each member has a full-time job, with a family, kids and plenty of responsibilities. “It's been a struggle finding the balance,” keyboardist Brad Taylor says. “But every single time I play music with this band, whether it be practice, recording, or a performance, it is 100% clear that it is all worth it and probably the only thing that keeps me fairly sane.” “It’s my dream to play music fulltime,” adds saxophonist and East Dallas neighbor Jacob Frie. “My day gig pays for my night dreams.” When they do get together, their chemistry is effortless. Each member plays their part, but they all agree upon the engine. “I spent four years in the Marine Corps band where there was a constant push for what we called showtime,” Frie says. “Kraig exemplifies this and knows how to drive the group.” So where are the Rosemont Kings headed? And do they have space for this project long-term or even fulltime? But it’s a Saturday night at the Balcony Club. Loyd takes a swig from his beer and adjusts his mic before pointing to Good, who plays the bass intro for “Celebrate,” a Rosemont original. Just like that, they’re off. The brass swells. The drums crash. The bass thumps. The guitar roars as Taylor enters his solo. How long will their moment together last? The Rosemont Kings are playing. It doesn’t matter.

OUR NEIGHBORHOOD

elanie Vanlandingham and Barbara Koegl, known for their neighborhood advocacy, have made lovely memories on the porch of their craftsman bungalow in Lakewood Heights. They enjoy coffee there most mornings, sip wine there in the evenings and frequently visit with family and friends there. It's also where Vanlandingham, on bended knee, asked Koegl to marry her on June 26, 2015, the very day gay marriage became legal. Their 42-year love story has been a journey, one not without its challenges of being a same-sex couple in a straight and often judgmental world. "But our story is also remarkably commonplace and so like others," insists Vanlandingham. The two met in 1981 when they were undergraduates at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches. That all-important first impression was clearly a good one for both. "Mel was easy to talk to," recalls Koegl, "And she was smart, with a ready smile and a quick sense of humor." The attraction was mutual. "Though it was a brief introduction, I was struck by Barb's smile, her cleverness and charm," smiles Vanlandingham. "The kind of person everyone wants to get to know." Fate stepped in a few days later. "Our first date was happenstance when she came to my house with other friends," Vanlandingham remembers. "We were both surprised and happy to see each other again, even though we’d only met briefly before. I quickly asked

if she wanted to walk down the block for coffee and donuts." As poor college students, their early days revolved around school: studying at the library together, simple meals, walking on campus and meeting with friends. Both loved the outdoors, so hiking East Texas forests became part of their courtship as well. And muffins. Don't forget the muffins. "One of my favorite memories is seeing her across the campus common, walking toward me, smiling and carrying her now-famous blueberr y muffins," says Vanlandingham. "I made them to surprise Mel, "smiles Koegl. "I was smitten." "It worked. Her baking and cooking skills were revealed very early!" says Vanlandingham. Her legendary baking skills would ultimately lead to a career in the restaurant/grocery industry.

They also shared a love for the same music: Fleetwood Mac, Joni Mitchell, Janis Ian, Dan Fogelberg, James Taylor, Carol King, etc. Koegl recalls that their first Valentine's Day together was spent at a Dan Fogelberg concert in Dallas. A few months went by before they moved in together. After both graduated, one of their first jobs was in rural Oklahoma, where Vanlandingham worked as a forest researcher. Though she loved the job, their time in Oklahoma was short. "It didn’t seem safe or wise to share our relationship openly," they explain. "It created strain and frustration at times, but we've always been each other's safe harbor." The next stop was Texas A&M, where Vanlandingham attended graduate school to study Landscape Architecture. After a few years, the two made their way back home: Vanlandingham had grown up in

East Dallas and Koegl in Oak Cliff and Duncanville. It didn't take long for the two to become involved in neighborhood issues, and they are now well known for fighting for East Dallas. "Strengthening community is a passion for me," says Vanlandingham. "And Barb is often on the front lines with me." Koegl adds, "We started 25 years ago with LHNA (Lakewood Heights Neighborhood Association) during the teardown years by starting 'Front Yard Picnics' to bring old and new neighbors back together. We’ve also helped on friends’ groups for Tietze Park and Willis Winters Park for great park projects and sensitive improvements." The two are also involved in the historic preservation of Swiss Avenue's Aldredge House. Vanlandingham has also worked with the Dallas Homeowners League and helped write the city's Neighborhood Stabilization Overlay Zoning. She has gone to battle over some projects which would threaten the stability and safety of East Dallas neighborhoods, and she helped re-draw the Dallas City Council redistricting map. The couple were busy simply living their lives, full of shared interests and love, when the U.S. Supreme Court deemed gay marriage legal on June 26, 2015. "We cried in disbelief and joy," they say. Then Vanlandingham surprised Koegl. "Just before I left for work, Mel knelt down and proposed on our front porch. I cried and smiled all the way to work. I told everyone at work
and they were just as happy. It was a huge day!" They wasted no time and headed downtown three days later to the courthouse where they said their vows. "Having that option and that 'piece of paper' just didn't matter--or because it seemed a total impossibility, it couldn't matter - until we were able to get it," explains Vanlandingham. "Being finally able to marry was a relief and social acknowledgment and validation of us as a couple and all the years together." The couple has built a life together these four decades. Now that Koegl is retired, they plan to travel more, with an eye on national parks and the East Coast. Back home in East Dallas, they continue their community advocacy, attend concerts and museums, and enjoy quiet time at their bungalow where they watch sunsets and frequently cook together - and have been known to dance in the kitchen, two-stepping and swing their favorite moves. "It's the little things," smiles Koegl. "Sharing our story doesn't always come naturally as it's one that often was silenced," admits Vanlandingham. "We've looked beyond that during our 42 years together, though, and let our lives and our relationships with friends, family and our neighborhood speak for themselves." PATTI VINSON is a guest writer who has lived in East Dallas for more than 20 years. She’s written for the Advocate and Real Simple magazine.
