SENIOR LIVING AT AN AFFORDABLE PRICE Juliette Fowler Communities provides seniors with affordable, quality housing in our neighborhood Photo courtesy of Juliette Fowler Communities

DESIRABLE SENIOR-LIVING COMMUNITIES can be pricey — there’s no disputing that fact. Juliette Fowler Communities in our neighborhood is unique: Seniors with almost any budget can be accommodated with a great place to live. Fowler provides housing for about 600 older adults, over half of whom depend on affordable housing, and 200 or so who live in HUD-subsidized housing. Fowler Christian Apartments (FCA) provides 250 independent living apartments and a high level of care for those age 62 and older who apply and qualify. “There is a shortage of affordable senior living options in Dallas for those with middle incomes and below,” says Ashley Thames Brown, chief advancement officer for Juliette Fowler Communities. “Our affordable housing provisions give qualifying neighbors the opportunity to pay lower rent. We help applicants get referrals and encourage advance planning, since there is a two-year waiting list for apartment availability.” Fowler recognizes that when folks age into a senior living community, the high price of typical senior housing can force them out of life-long East Dallas, Lakewood and White Rock neighborhoods, CELEBRATING Brown says. “Residents living in our affordable housing apartments include teachers, veterans, police officers, widows, librarians and Sunday school The teachers, people on whose shoulders we stand

every day. Juliette Fowler offers a way to keep great neighbors in our neighborhood,” she says. Some of these life-long neighborhood residents have been at Juliette Fowler for as many as 30 years, Brown says, and they choose Fowler for many reasons in addition to affordability: safety in a gated community, spiritual life, wellness, location and easy access to hospitals, grocery stores, restaurants and other neighborhood resources. By 2030, Brown says, all Baby Boomers will be older than age 65. “Consider economics, cost of healthcare and increased costs of living — without more Juliette Fowlers providing affordable housing, what will happen?” Affordable-housing residents at Fowler live on the same campus, enjoy the same dining program and participate in the same events and activities as everyone living at Juliette Fowler Communities, she says. “Even if you are not sure you will need affordable housing, or if you believe your Mom or Dad might, apply now for it,” Brown says. “There is no cost to apply, and there’s often a waiting list to move in.” Visit fowlercommunities.org or call 214-827-0813 now to learn more and apply for Juliette Fowler Communities’ affordable housing opportunities.

HOW YOU CAN HELP Juliette Fowler needs to raise $1.3 million annually to subsidize the needs of more than 250 seniors in affordable housing, fund spiritual life and chaplaincy, provide increased dementia programs, give a home to young women in need through Fowler’s Ebby House residential program, and provide resources and support for area foster children and families. Fowler donors make it possible for neighborhood seniors to afford to live in our neighborhood. To donate funds to support the seniors and youth at Fowler, or to learn more about other ways you can help, contact Brown at 214-827-0813.

Spring blooms At North Haven Gardens’ annual Rose Weekend, the experienced staff ensures you pick out the perfect roses

rom a lush, striking peach-orange ‘Rosie the Riveter’ to a classic red ‘Legends’ hybrid tea rose, North Haven Gardens’ Rose Weekend features a flower blossom for everyone. With more than 130 varieties, you’ll find a wide selection of roses in all shapes and colors. A tradition for over 70 years, NHG’s Rose Weekend has been instrumental in keeping Dallas rose gardens vibrant. Originally, this popular weekend event was held in October. In those days, original rosarian Ira Duncan and founder Ralph Pinkus trekked to the Tyler rose fields, selecting the rose varieties that would be displayed instore for customers to browse. Bareroot canes were brought in after orders were placed. North Haven Gardens grew the shrubs over the winter in recycled food cans, and customers returned in March to pick up their shrubs. By the mid-1970s, commercial rose growing in the U.S. was largely centered in California, but today, North Haven Gardens continues the tradition of bringing in several thousand bare root roses each winter to grow out for the next spring. Bare rootstock comes from several reputable wholesale rose growers from around the country, says general manager Cody Hoya. Rose

At North Haven Gardens, enthusiasts can find a large variety of roses, attend classes such as Chic Home Plant Care, How Not to Kill Your Indoor Houseplant and “Swap and Sips” – opportunities for interested parties to trade cuttings and seeds with others. bushes typically start trickling into the nursery just as the holiday season is in full swing. Now the last full weekend of March, North Haven Gardens sells an average of 1,000 roses during Rose Weekend — almost one-third of NHG’s yearly rose sales. It’s one of a handful of Texas nurseries that features fan-favorite David Austin English Roses. The best way to select the perfect rose for your garden? “Visit North Haven Gardens during Rose Weekend. Our garden advisors are ready and waiting to help select the best rose for you and your garden.” Hoya says. E

ven if you don’t realize it, you have seen Jeremy Biggers’ work around Dallas. As an award-winning artist, he’s established himself as a prominent painter and muralist, with artwork around the world and more locally in Deep Ellum, West Dallas and Oak Cliff. The massive Leon Bridges surrounded by Blues legends that decorates the side of the Patagonia building. That's a Biggers. Jefferson Boulevard’s belting Selena. That’s a Biggers, too. But his success didn’t happen overnight. Growing up in South Dallas, Biggers had a passion for art and taught himself the basics. He loved characters from the Sunday cartoons and comic books, and for a while he emulated the drawings he saw before creating his own characters. His mother was a major supporter of his work, realizing how naturally drawing came to her son. “My mom cultivated (my passion). She would bring home reams of paper from work and I would draw on all 500 sheets, and just fill up notebook after notebook,” he says. “My mom did her best to try to put me in positions to win.” Biggers’ mother was a “rockstar” who researched how to get Biggers an audition at Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. He didn’t realize it at the time, but her dedication to researching the school’s admission process in the pre-internet days was a “turning point” for his trajectory as an artist. During the audition process, Biggers was “full of doubt” during the “most nerve wracking thing that (he) had ever done.” “I'm competing with people that have had art lessons since they were three years old, competing with people that their parents can afford for them to be in the art world at such a young age,” Biggers says. “That first half, I was just like ‘Where do I stack up? Do I belong? Have I made a mistake?’ And the second half I was like ‘Nah, I deserve to be here just like any of these other people.’” He painted his way into school acceptance, and was able to take his first real art classes. When college rolled around, Biggers attended Eastfield College before transferring to the University of Texas at Arlington where he studied graphic design. Biggers outgrew his adolescent aspirations after convincing himself that being an artist wasn’t a viable career to pay bills. He looked for jobs as a graphic designer or animator, but eventually settled on an entry-level role at the Greyhound corporate office downtown. He was left unsatisfied and drained from “typical corporate cubicle life,” and wanted to change paths. “It was absolutely horrendous. It wasn't for me at all, but I thought that this was what adults do. You work jobs that you don't like so that you pay the bills,”

In every Jeremy Biggers art piece, dots are scattered on his work as a symbolic signature he's used to honor his mom.

Biggers says it’s more than art, it’s a way to tell stories from the Black male perspective that has historically been excluded from the art world. Many of his works feature individuals from the Black community who have been a source of inspiration for him; his way of contributing to the “already rich culture” of Black art. He is past the point of trying to please everyone with his art. Many of his paintings are adorned with dots that are as much of a character as the subjects themselves. The dots 2020-2023 are a subtle, but meaningful nod to his “first art fan,” his mother. A BAG E L B O N A N Z A ! More bagel shops appear around East Dallas neighborhood Story by LILLIAN JUAREZ | Photography by LAUREN ALLEN If you’re craving a bagel, you’re in luck. Just head over to Skillman Street or Greenville Avenue, or maybe even Peavy Road. Frankly, no matter where you are, bagels seem to be everywhere in our neighborhood. That’s why we say “bagels” a total of 16 times in this article. It's not just plain bagel and plain schmear. Truffle, birthday cake and whitefish schmears exist in this new reality. And of course, you can get New York City bodega favorite bacon egg and cheese on everything (American cheese, specifically). “It’s cool seeing other bagel places,” says Suzie Hernandez, Benny’s Bagels’ manager. “It’s crazy because at first this was the only local [bagel store] open at the time … It’s cool that it’s growing and customer wise we’re pretty steady.” Around 25 years ago, Benny’s

18 lakewood.advocatemag.com MARCH 2024

Bagels came to Lakewood with New York-style bagels, sandwiches and wraps. Although new shops are opening less than a mile away, business is doing just fine, Hernandez says. When Abby’s Bagels, located on Lower Greenville, opened on Jan. 19, the shop sold more than 5,000 bagels in three days. A month later, they’re still selling out of bagels nearly every day, says owner Nick Backlund. “I keep seeing the same people over and over and over again who clearly live in the neighborhood, and I've been talking to them, and they [say] ‘Every morning when I walk my dog, I come get a coffee, and every other day, I get whatever,’” Backlund says. “So the community in the immediate area has grabbed onto it immediately.” Backlund was already leasing the space at 1915 Greenville

Ave. for storage space for his bar Hide, conveniently located across the street. “I had to do something here. I can't put a bar in here, and you can't put a restaurant in here with the parking requirements. This had to be a retail grab-andgo of some sort,” Backlund says. “My parents suggested bagels.” The shop, named after his wife, was a natural fit. He grew up working at his parents' bagel store in Southern California. Just two miles away, Lubbies Bagels is cranking out fresh sourdough as early as 4 a.m. Lubbies got so overwhelmed with demand they closed to regroup on Aug. 5, 2023, according to Culture Map. Lubbies has stayed busy with continuous catering orders and selling over 1,000 bagels daily. The New Jersey transplant sister duo Andrea and Jen Lubkin opened Lubbies on Peavy Road

due to what they say was a lack of authentic bagels in the area. “We thought it was time to bring a great bagel to Dallas. There are other good bagels here; we have some good competition. But the main goal that we have is [to create] the bagel of our childhood,” Andrea says. Which raises the question: what makes a good authentic bagel? Can you even spot the difference between the three? It’s a little like Goldilocks. Lubbies bagels are meant to be brown and bubbly on the outside with a soft and cushiony interior. They always look for the crackle sound of their bagel. Abby’s has a softer exterior, not as crunchy on the teeth. Benny’s is that right in-between. You can find chewy and crunchy bagels from their wide variety of choices. “I think that having a bagel shop in every neighborhood just raises the awareness of a bagel, I still meet people who don’t know what one is,” Jen says. Well, we have questions for those people.

Derek is tough, aggressive, compassionate and local, a combination that community residents have found effective during the most stressful time of their lives.

THOSE CITY BIRDS ARE ALL THE SAME How the coots of White Rock Lake inspired a children's book Story by SIMON PRUITT | Photography by KELSEY SHOEMAKER

“L

ook at those city birds, they’re all the same,” says Jenani Tzhone’s young daughter, as the two watched them congregate on a February night at White Rock Lake. Those birds were called coots, a common water bird that is known to travel in large flocks. The coots weren’t particularly discernible from one another, most of them sporting the same dark black feathers and white beaks. Tzhone then noticed a beautiful duck fly in and land among the

22 lakewood.advocatemag.com MARCH 2024

coots. The duck had beautiful brown feathers that stood out and magnified the coots’ uniformity. The image of a colorful, singular duck standing out in the sea of mundane coots stuck with her, and she knew exactly what to do with it. “I got this story, it just came spilling out,” she says. “The next day, I went for a run and when I got home, I just spit it all out on paper.” Tzhone made a living as a teacher, and had been batting around ideas for a children’s book of her own for years. She had never written before, only jotting down the occasional idea or poem at her desk.

“I've always had ideas,” she explains. “But then I would Google it and someone's already done it. This was one time where I wasn't even trying, and of course, that's when it happened to stick.” In one night, her idea came to fruition as a fun, rhythmic tale of singularity and bravery. Her words were on paper, and she loved it. But that’s only half the battle. Tzhone laid out her words along with some photos she took on the lake for her first rough draft of the book, and took it across the street to get her neighbors’ opinions. According to Tzhone, her neighbor didn’t mince words. “Your pictures are crap,” he told her. “But give it to my sister who’s a graphic designer and she’ll knock it out of the park for you.” Selena Burrows was the one up to bat. She lived in Iowa, and just like Tzhone, hadn’t worked on a children’s book before. “We both knew nothing,” Tzhone says. “Her first time, my first time. It was so fun going back and forth.” The two worked tirelessly together online, bringing Tzhone’s vision for the book to life. Eventually they came to a consensus, crafting a watercolor art scheme and a main character duck modeled after Willie Nelson. The finished product became known as The City Coots of White Rock Lake, retelling the scene Tzhone witnessed with her daughter with a fun, rhyming twist that reads like the great children’s books of old. After years of teaching, learning and trying, Tzhone has finally crafted the art she’s always wanted to make. It’s conceived out of love, for her daughter and for the countless students she taught along the way. It’s conceived out of nature and out of neighbors. Most of all, The City Coots of White Rock Lake is a product of her neverending desire to create, and to make something out of what she sees around her. It’s to stand out in a crowd. “If I go through every day and do the same thing, especially as a mom, you're doing lots of cyclical things,” Tzhone explains. “That’s what creating is for me. Creating guarantees it's not Groundhog Day.”

In Wednesday’s Dallas city council meeting, the horseshoe approved an election for a $1.25 billion bond package that will go before voters May 4. Early voting will run from April 22-30. The council vote, which passed 14-1, set the amount of funding each section of the bond will receive. Funding will be allocated to projects in 10 categories: roads, parks, libraries, housing, homelessness, public safety, cultural arts facilities, flood protection and storm draining, economic development and city information technology. The largest chunk of the funds will be given to streets and transportation, which received $521,200,000. The second largest section, park and recreation, will receive $345,270,000. Council member Adam Bazaldua was the lone vote against the allocations, advocating that money needed to be earmarked for City Hall repairs. “I wish I was able to support this bond, but as long as it isn’t one that supports our city staff and our city’s homeless and housing crisis, then I don’t feel it’s truly a reflection of our city’s greatest needs,” Bazaldua wrote on X, formerly Twitter, following the vote. Funding that, in earlier bond drafts, had been allocated to City Hall maintenance was removed last month by the council. Nearly $30 million was reallocated to other sections of the bond. Council members have until the end of February to iron out the final list of projects that will be included in the bond. Here are the final amounts each section of the bond will receive: • Streets & Transportation: $521,200,000 • Park and Recreation: $345,270,000 • Libraries: $43,530,000 • Housing: $26,400,000 • Economic Development: $72,300,000 • Homeless Housing: $19,000,000 • Flood Protection & Storm Drainage: $52,100,000 • Public Safety: $90,000,000 • Cultural Arts Facilities: $75,200,000 • Information Technology: $5,000,000

A TASTE

OF JAPAN KAIYO’S DINING EXPERIENCE BRINGS TRADITION AND CULTURE TO GREENVILLE AVENUE Story by LILLIAN JUAREZ | Photography by KATHY TRAN

Kaiyo's specialty is its sashimi dishes, a Japenese delicacy consisting of raw fish.

S

hoyo and Kaiyo might be the Japanese-dining sisters of Greenville Avenue, but the resemblance stops at the cuisine. Shoyo is known for its small, exclusive feel. So small, in fact, that there’s only 12 seats in the restaurant, and reservations fill up fast. Dining there rings you in at $175 per person, with a 16-course omakase sushi bar. Kaiyo, on the other hand, is the carefree younger sister. The restaurant opened in November with plenty of tables and a patio to boot. Sashimi and rolls range from $7-18. Kaiyo’s chefs are childhood friends. Calling themselves the Three Stooges, chef and co-founder of the sister restaurants Jimmy Park is joined by head chef William Yoon (who was the best man in his wedding) and Raymond Park (no relation but still a close friend) at Kaiyo. “Without the team, I think there's nothing,” Yoon says. The culinary vision at Kaiyo is brought by Shinichiro Kondo, master chef of Shoyo, and Jun Nagayama, a seasoned sushi chef with over 30 years of experience in Las Vegas. Though their culinary reputation precedes them, Kaiyo’s menu is fun and unpretentious. “Anyone can push fish over rice and a lot of places do,” Yoon says. “But we want each piece to have a unique flavor and some of them don’t come with toppings but we try to create toppings where it kind of balances out together so you get a good bite.” While traditional rolls are not off the table, Kaiyo’s little sister vibe flows straight into the menu with fun, “cool starters.” “The chef needs to know the fish, how it needs to be prepared or how it needs to be presented,” says Jun Nagayama, one of the chefs who helped develop the menu. “Making the sushi part as a chef will be the easiest part. It’s just the whole other knowledge of

28 lakewood.advocatemag.com MARCH 2024

the fish, the cutting style, or the recipe, that’s the secret.” The menu starts with the tuna pizza, which features tuna, deep fried capers, red onions, micro cilantro, pickled serrano, yuzu soy and truffle oil atop a flour tortilla and the Don’t be a Bincho with yuzu dressing, garlic chips, para para and micro arugula. The cocktail menu is no exception, like the Not My Oni One, which features Roku gin, red bell pepper, honey, lemon and mint. The cocktail menu was developed by consulting bartender Paul Ngo (known for his cocktail creations at Victor Tangos and Tiny Victories) and current bartender Fernanda “Cubby” Rossano. “We don’t want to outshine each other, it’s more about what’s good and what gets to the point,” Cubby says. “Like the food, it’s one bite so you gotta make sure you wow them with that one bite, same thing with the cocktail.” The restaurant’s cocktail menu consists of over 40 beverages, from offerings including wine, beer sake and custom made drinks by Cubby. Originally from Mexico City, Cubby has been in the bar industry in Lower Greenville for over a decade. Her creations at Kaiyo encompass authenticity through small details, including Japanese liquor, flavors and Japanese blenders, she says. Whether you’re there for the sushi or cocktails, Kaiyo staff emphasizes that no reservation is needed. The majority of tables are held for walk-ins, ready for guests to pop-in in front of Kaiyo’s signature mural, created by Brooklyn-based muralist and graphic designer Yukiko Izumi. The mural symbolizes resurrection, rebirth, contrast, flexibility and freedom, much like the new restaurant itself. Kaiyo 2014 Greenville Ave. 214.484.1888

Each dish at Kaiyo is meticulously crafted by a team of highly skilled sushi chefs, each from exclusive restaurant backgrounds.

THE HOUSE PARTIES It was a crazy time in the early 2000s, with parties in their front yard, a DJ and an at-home bar, Cecille Newberry says. Her brother and her had house parties with 200 people celebrating since 2001. For many neighbors like Newberry, it’s their favorite holiday, not just because of the parties but because it’s the one day of the year everyone is connected. Photography courtesy of GAABA

THE MEET CUTES In 2002 Kelli Culpepper, a Woodrow Wilson High School alumna, and her former college roommate and best friend from J.L. Long attended the block party and spent their entire day at the Dubliner.

“I've been hanging out here for 22 years, you have your old friends and the neighborhood bars, they're always going to show up, so you know that day once a year you're gonna see everyone and everyone's in a good mood and everyone's happy,” Newberry says. It’s Dallas’ Mardi Gras, although it’s gotten more tamed over the years, it’s still crazy and everyone is having fun, Newberry adds.

While enjoying their time, they looked over and saw a man who her friend believed would be a perfect match for Culpepper. Culpepper and the man talked and exchanged numbers before heading separate ways, unfortunately, she gave him her office number at the gynecologist clinic, and he was hesitant to call asking for a date. A few days later she gave him a call and a formal date was set in the books. A year later on March 17, 2003 the two got married. Although the couple could celebrate their wedding anniversary, they choose to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day at the Dubliner instead. “It literally is more important to us than our wedding day. Because it's the day we met and it's Greenville, and it's that party, and the Dubliner is still there, and so every year if we are here we go to the Dubliner on St. Patrick's Day,” she says.

John Haney met his wife on what he calls “the odd March 19” 2016 block party.

Suzy Angiel met her husband of 34 years bungee jumping on GV St. Paddy’s parade with the Campisi clan.

THE COUCH SURFER When Tracy Copland lived on Lower Greenville, she would watch the parade alongside her neighbors from their apartment's courtyard, where they hosted barbecues. One year after a long day of partying, a man wandered into their unlocked apartment and fell asleep on her friend Mike’s couch. The next day, Mike woke up for work like any normal day. On his way out he saw the stranger knocked out in his living room. He asked the guy why he was there and politely asked him to leave. On his way to work, he called a radio station to share his story. The guy on the couch phoned the radio to confess it was him. “Strangers become friends,” Copland says. MARCH 2024 lakewood.advocatemag.com

THE ENTREPRENEUR In 1972, the same year of the inaugural St. Patrick’s Day Parade, Richard Orozco purchased a home for himself and his wife in Lower Greenville. Since then, the Orozco family has witnessed the celebration evolve over time. “It just got bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger,” says Michael Orozco, Richard’s son. Since the inception of the parade, the Orozcos have upheld their family tradition of hosting brisket taco cookouts and gatherings to watch the parade outside their house. This tradition was initiated by Michael’s mother, who died two years ago. As the parade continued to grow, Michael seized an opportunity to make extra cash. He began renting a porta potty, and on a good year, he makes around $400 by charging parade-goers to use the restroom.

THE IDES OF MARCH Teri Ervin says she has been attending the parade since its inception. Living off of Greenville and Ross during college and beyond, from '79 to '86, she says "those were the party days." Now, she still never misses the event as it's the first harbinger of spring.

The parade is bound to grow, and so will the Orozco’s family tradition. Neither the parade nor their family cookout is going anywhere, the father and son affirm. It’s a cherished family tradition that will be passed down to future generations of East Dallas within their family.

THE FUR BABIES The parade is for everyone, even for our fur friends. Rachael Jacob moved to Dallas when she was around 19 and has been attending the parade for years. Living near River Pig Saloon, Jacob says it gets wild but she loves the chaos that comes with the parade. Although she may not have a favorite memory, as a dog trainer she enjoys taking her dogs with her to the parade to people watch with neighbors. Jacob encourages pet parents to bring their animals to the parade as long as they're on a leash and can handle the loudness of the event. If it's your dog's first time attending the parade, bring treats to reward your pet for good behavior and try to not stay too long as it might overstimulate your pets.

THE BABY In the Spring of 1998, Teresa Wyatt Vanderenden experienced her first St. Patrick’s Day event, and for the past 25 years, She has attended every parade. However, there was one year she missed the parade — the day she gave birth to her daughter. “I lived 25 years just off Greenville Ave. in Vickery Place. When our St.Patrick’s Day baby was born we couldn’t wait to tell her that the parade was for her birthday. It’s one of the really cool parts of living in Lower Greenville,” Vanderenden says. When her daughter turned 13, she and her husband made the decision to bring her to the parade and celebrate her birthday there. Now, it has become a treasured tradition to celebrate her birthday at the parade surrounded by family and friends. The family teases that the parade was practically created in honor of their daughter's birthday. Vanderenden and her daughter love the parade and celebrating it together as a family. “The vibe is just so fun. It’s just electric, you can just feel it in the air, people are happy and excited and ready to have a good time and meet up with friends,” Vanderenden says. “It’s a time to be together, making new friends and just kind of a really fun atmosphere.”

34 lakewood.advocatemag.com MARCH 2024

THE TIPS Parade Chairman Kevin Vela has a list of do’s and don’ts whether you’re new or returning to the parade this year. Vela says do: ride share such as Uber, Lyft and Dart and arrive extra early to account for traffic. You can get dropped off at Mockingbird Station or at Lovers Lane and be in a great spot to watch the parade. And, Vela says don’t be irresponsible by littering or being a bad neighbor to those who live on the block. “Be respectful to the people around you, being orderly on your way out,” Vela says. “It’s an amazing day and we’ve been running it for a long time without any real incident, we’d like to keep it that way.”

THE FRIENDSHIPS Kim Lanphere has been attending the parade for over a decade. She says the event is the one time you run into old friends and make new ones. “I run into a lot of people that I haven’t seen in like 10 years,” Lanphere says. “If you lived in Dallas for any amount of time you can run into people that you know. All sorts of people show up that you haven’t seen since high school.” It’s also a great opportunity to “investigate the area” and try new bars and restaurants that you normally don’t get the chance to try, she adds. Lanphere says it's a lot more fun to walk around rather than staying in one place the whole time. This is the perfect opportunity to walk around, meet new people and try new bars. “Check out the bars along the way because sometimes you don’t go to every single bar but at this time you can walk to bars you never would have looked at before and check them all out,” Lanphere says.

Let the opossums be W hy we n e e d t h ese n e i g h b o r h o o d m a rs u p i a l s to ke e p h a n g i n ' a ro u n d

O

possums get a bad rap, there's no doubt about it. They lurk in the dark, have sharp teeth and a menacing hiss and look like giant rodents. But if you happen to spot one in your East Dallas backyard, have no fear - and consider yourself lucky. These little guys are fascinating creatures that are beneficial to our shared ecology and worthy of our appreciation. Did you know that opossums, as a group, are among the oldest, most primitive mammals? They walked the Earth with dinosaurs, looking pretty much the same in present day. Some scientists call them "living fossils" because they have survived relatively unchanged for at least 50 million years. They are the only native marsupial in North America. Some believe these cousins of kangaroos and koalas were first observed by early English colonists. The word "opossum" derives from the Powhatan, an indigenous tribe from Virginia, and means "white beast." Sam Kieschnick, an Urban Biologist with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, is an enthusiastic fan of the opossum. "They're incredibly interesting," he says. "The 'marsupium' is the pouch where the young develop until they are mature enough to leave – and even then, they sometimes stay with the parent by riding the back." After a gestation period of only twelve days or so, the bee-sized babies crawl unaided into the mom's pouch, where they remain to nurse and grow for seven weeks. They then hitch a ride on mom

36 lakewood.advocatemag.com MARCH 2024

until they're ready to leave on their own. Another unusual feature: its scaly, nearly hairless tail is prehensile, meaning it can grasp things. "They'll use it to carry leaves for their nests and dens or hold on to branches as they climb," explains Kieschnick. The opossum also has the distinction of being the only non-primate mammal with opposable thumbs on its paws, a handy thing for grasping trees. Kieschnick mentions another unusual characteristic: "Opossums have 50 teeth – more than any other mammal in North America." Now you know the origin of the old Southern expression "grinnin' like a possum." And do they ever make use of those teeth? They are omnivores. Opossums eat pretty much everything, and much

of their diet includes pests in your yard. Roaches, beetles, ants, snails, grasshoppers, caterpillars - it's all on the menu for them. Mice and rats? Sure, opossums will eat those. A bit of good news for those of us who suffer from ophidophobia: opossums seek out and quite enjoy an entrée of snake. Any snake, including, amazingly enough, the venomous kind. Rattlesnake? Yum, according to the opossum. They also provide a complimentary clean-up of your yard by eating pests in your garden and by eating fresh carrion, nuts, and overripe, rotting fruit from trees. Be aware that these nocturnal animals happily dine on any food you leave out for your pets or those feral cats. Be sure to have a tight-fitting lid on your

garbage can. "They are one of the mammals that has adapted to living amongst us,” Kieschnick says. ”They are omnivores and opportunistic, so they will utilize any sort of available resources – in the urban ecosystem, sometimes this means our trash." Just don't blame opossums for a toppled can: a raccoon is more likely the culprit. Opossums aren't above helping themselves to the result, but usually leave the heavy lifting to raccoons. Perhaps most intriguing of all is this mammal's defense mechanism: "playing possum." When confronted with perceived danger, the opossum goes into a catatonic state. "Opossums lower their heart rate, slow their breathing, keep their mouth open and even stick o u t t h e i r t o n gu e , " s ay s Ki e s ch n i ck , adding, "Not only do they look dead, but they 'smell dead' too," by emitting a foul-smelling odor from their anal glands. "Perhaps this is an adaptation

to prevent predators from eating a diseased corpse." Very dramatic scene, no doubt. But before you award the Oscar to our marsupial friend, consider breaking out the smelling salts instead: this death act is actually an involuntary reaction, not "playing." It's a physiological response to danger. Julie Cassidy has seen a few opossums in her day. A volunteer for the DFW Wildlife Hotline and wildlife rehabber for the past twelve years, she estimates she has treated more than 800 opossums, most injured by a car or a dog attack. It's a fallac y that opossums are a threat to pets. Quite the contrary. "Pets are far more dangerous to opossums than they are to the pets," Kieschnick advises. He urges pet owners to keep an eye on dogs when outside or bring them in, and always keep cats indoors. Cassidy says if you encounter an opossum, leave it alone. But if it appears in-

jured, contact the DFW Wildlife Hotline (972-234-9453) for guidance. Kieschnick sums it up well. If you see an opossum, "Let it be," he says. "Appreciate for a moment that urban wildlife can live amongst us." Though we've removed the prairies and forests which were once theirs, opossums have rolled with it. "Opossums have adapted to living with us – using some of our decks or sheds as a shelter, using the ditches along the roads as corridors, and even using some of our refuse as nutrients. They are a remnant of the past, the same sort of animal that early explorers or indigenous peoples would interact with – and we can still do that today." PATTI VINSON is a guest writer who has lived in East Dallas for more than 20 years. She’s written for the Advocate and Real Simple magazine.
