2020 is projected to be another strong year for home sales. Numerous contributing factors include low interest rates and limited inventory. The housing market seems to be more reasonably priced. Equally important, Buyers' perception of value and Sellers' willingness to price appropriately.

[-] BURGER STREET, the little
drive-up burger joint located in the Kroger parking lot at Mockingbird Lane and Greenville Avenue closed after 26 years in business. A spokesperson for the eatery says Kroger owns the parking lot and raised the rent to a rate the business could not afford. The owners plan to rebuild but have not yet chosen a location. that was once Melios Bros Char Bar in the blue chalet at 2026 Greenville Ave. [-] OLD CHICAGO PIZZA & TAPROOM permanently closed in
Mockingbird Station after more than five years in business at that location. A spokesperson for the parent company, CraftWorks Holdings, says the closure was a business decision as CraftWorks focuses on other locations across the country.

CONCERNED ABOUT THE CORONAVIRUS? The Advocate is tracking the latest on the coronavirus and how it’s impacting our neighborhood. For news, developments, cancellations and information on how you can stay prepared, check lakewood.advocatemag.com.
PORKY’S POTHOLE PATROL Porky the Pothole Pig is back to sniff out pesky potholes on East Dallas streets. His first order of business was the crater on Abrams Road between Glenrose Court and Lakeshore Drive. The sneaky pothole is hard to see, and motorists barely have time to brace for impact before their tires hit the edge and thud into the hole. Porky did his civic duty and reported the pothole to the City of Dallas. Got a pothole in need of Porky’s assistance? Email the location to jdunaway@advocatemag.com.
POLICE BEAT A man arrested in East Dallas lied to authorities and told them he had the coronavirus so he would be released from jail. After a 24-yearold was taken to the Dallas County jail and charged with assault of a family member, he told a jail nurse he had traveled abroad and was infected with the virus. When doctors examined him, he showed no signs of being ill. City officials responded and said that, at that time, there were no confirmed cases of the coronavirus. A carjacking in Old East Dallas ended with five people arrested after a 40-minute chase. Authorities spotted the stolen SUV in Oak Cliff, and the driver made multiple turns and drove in the wrong direction to evade pursuers. The driver tried to ram police vehicles at least twice, and passengers threw objects out the window before being stopped at a dead end.
WE CAN’T STOP TALKING ABOUT THE LEANING TOWER OF DALLAS. The elevator shaft in
the former Affiliated Computer Services building refused to go down during a planned implosion Feb. 16 and remained upright at an angle on Haskell Avenue. It didn’t take long before neighbors started calling it the “Leaning Tower of Dallas.” Crowds flocked to the city’s newest attraction to take pictures with the Leaning Tower of Pisa lookalike. The building stood strong against a comically small wrecking ball that demolition workers brought in to finish the job. The final blow fell March 2, more than two weeks after the implosion. R.I.P. Leaning Tower of Dallas. You will live forever on the internet and in our hearts. april 2020 lakewood.advocatemag.com

QUEEN OF CALM Erykah Badu rocked a designer hazmat suit that, for a moment, made everyone forget their fear and think, “Where can I get one?” The songstress, who lives in East Dallas, wore her “social distancing couture,” which she made herself, to the Texas Film Awards March 12 in Austin, where she was honored with the Filmmakers & Soundtrack Award. The following week, Badu announced plans for a quarantine concert series that will be streamed live from her bedroom, or as she calls it, the “Badubotron.” The series costs $1 per episode, and viewers get to choose the songs via poll. Keep an eye on Badu’s Instagram account or check Lakewood.advocatemag.com for updates.
PIECE OF THE PAST
KIRBY’S PIG STAND
The first Kirby’s Pig Stand opened in West Oak Cliff in 1921. The little barbecue stand with carhop service was an immediate hit because drivers were “too lazy” to get out of their cars. Pig Stand was so successful that by 1924, there were nine other stands in Dallas. The company also expanded to San Antonio, Houston, Beaumont and six other states. The last remaining Pig Stand in Dallas, at Northwest Highway and Abrams, closed in 1985.
THE WORD The Starbucks at Northwest Highway and Shady Brook Lane temporarily closed. Conflicting signs taped to the door left customers with unanswered questions. Was it under construction or permanently closed? Here’s what neighbors had to say:
CATCH UP WITH COLLEEN COYLE When we last saw neighborhood meteorologist Colleen Coyle, she was leaving ABC affiliate WFAA after nine years at the station as she and her husband adopted their first child. Now she’s back on the tube as a freelance meteorologist for the Weather Channel. She made her debut in February with Jacqui Jeras and Chris Bruin on Weather Center Live.

“Hopefully they will renovate it to a White Rock Coffee…so much better!” — Carl Coan “I used to work at this location. The store is under renovation. It was a gas station before it became Starbucks, and the leftover gas wasn’t properly removed. Renovation will probably take longer than expected.” — C.C. Emerick “There’s one on the next block…It’s OK.” — Jeremy Johnson “I wish the remodel was on the outside as well as the inside. It would be nice if people waiting for the drive-thru were unable to block the parking lot.” — Deborah Rodriguez

UP FRONT C OMP O S T C OL L E C T OR How a homeowner turned a zerowaste yard and a zero-waste kitchen into a business

I
t’s not unusual for Lakewood neighbor Lauren Clarke to receive text messages from strangers about nail clippings, hair and dryer lint. As the owner of Turn, a monthly subscription service that collects compost, customers want to know what organic materials can be recycled. “That’s always fun and unexpected,” Clarke says. “The truth is, they are all compostable.” Fed up with food waste filling our landfills, Clarke started composting at her home 10 years ago. She joined the U.S. Composting Council and began researching how other cities minimize their environmental footprint. On Earth Day in 2018, she launched Turn, which picks up neighbors’ organic waste and takes it to local farms. Since starting in Lakewood, Turn has expanded to 17 ZIP codes and added 12 drop-off locations throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The business has also partnered with Khao Noodle Shop and other establishments that want to reduce waste. “I want everyone to feel like we’re part of a team working together for something good,” she says. “We try to make [customers] proud of what they’re doing.” Have you always been interested in the environment? I was very close to my grandmother, and she always composted. It had an impact on my life. When I lived in New York, I tried to grow things on the balcony. I’ve always loved plants and gardens. I just never had the time or space to delve into it. When I met my husband and had a house, I was so excited about starting a garden. I have a zero-waste yard and a zero-waste kitchen. I don’t throw away anything. That’s what Turn is about — reusing everything. Why did you decide to start Turn? I became aware of a massive problem, and that is organic waste going into a landfill. That’s bad for the environment because it creates methane. Food waste. Grass clippings. We’re used to thinking of those things as trash, but they’re actually resources. They are wasted resources that can be used in something positive called compost. I recognized a problem and wanted to do something about it. The second aspect is that I recognized a business opportunity. I know the idea of composting is disgusting for most people. I wanted to create a service that made it easy for people to do the right thing. There’s so much talk about climate change and the environment. It’s very overwhelming. Whether or not you believe in any of that, composting is still a basic way we can do good for our soil and our earth. How have you seen Turn grow? I didn’t have massive grand plans for ecological domination. I tried to think simply as a mom. I started in my neighborhood. I thought, “There’s no sense in trying to grow something if I can’t make it work at home.” I launched a pilot program with an announcement on the Lakewood Facebook page and Nextdoor. I’d hoped it would grow, but I didn’t expect it. I’d like for it to grow bigger. We owe it to ourselves and the environment to do a better job.
What’s the weirdest thing people have asked if they can compost? Pet waste. Human waste. Dead squirrels. Needless to say, we don’t accept those items. What’s one compostable material people can reuse at home? If you choose one thing to do, saving your leaves has the most impact. They break down over the long term and provide nutrients.
“I tried to think simply as a mom. I started in my neighborhood.”
What’s it like being a female business owner? I find myself in this interesting world of waste management. Sometimes it’s intimidating because it’s primarily a male-dominated industry. I’ve had to learn a lot about trucks and logistics and things that aren’t in my background. I’ve had to take a real humble mindset. If I hear negative comments, I have to let them roll off my back, and I’m OK with that. But I’ve had so much support from customers, my team and other female business owners. People have come alongside me, and I’m thankful for that. How do you balance being a mom and a businesswoman? That’s the ultimate question. I want to be a good wife and mother. I want to be a good businesswoman and leader. I’m constantly juggling those two things. Motherhood has been a great skill that’s taught me how to be a better leader and multitasker. I have to be disciplined with my time. You can never really have a day off. Everyone says that about small businesses, and it’s true. There’s a level of maturity to being a small-business owner that comes with being a mother. What are you most proud of? Professionally, I’m most proud of our Turn team. Personally, I’m really proud of my son who is 5 and understands the difference between what to put in the trash, what to put in the recycling and what to compost. I hope more families can get their kids to understand that. This interview has been edited for clarity and brevity.

Alex Enriquez: A change agent for Dallas ISD
Longtime neighbor focuses trustee campaign on boosting community involvement
T
rust. That’s the issue. Or more precisely, the widespread lack of trust between parents and current Dallas ISD administration — that’s why Alex Enriquez is running for Dallas ISD District 2 Trustee. Alex is a DISD success story. A graduate of Dallas ISD’s Victor H. Hexter Elementary, Robert T. Hill Middle School, and Bryan Adams High School, he was a National Hispanic Merit Scholar and attended Florida State University on a full-ride academic scholarship. But when he graduated college in 2004, Alex kept thinking about all of his classmates who didn’t make it. [900 people started in his class at Bryan Adams, 396 graduated]. Alex knew he was lucky. And he believed his classmates deserved better. So he set off on a career in education policy and advocacy.
I want parents to feel “solidarity. As a Trustee, my decisions will not be made unilaterally but in partnership with the community.
”
The East Dallas native moved back to his hometown in 2014 because he wanted his kids to get the same high-quality education that Dallas ISD gave him, his parents, and his grandparents. “Over the years, countless parents have asked me whether or not they can trust DISD,” Alex says. “As a DISD grad myself, it surprised me at first. But the longer I worked within the system, the more I understood why they were asking. And the older my own kids get, the more urgent that question feels.”
Alex Enriquez enjoys time with his family. Photo by Danny Fulgencio.
Alex is the former Founding Executive Director of City Year Dallas, a national nonprofit that partners with high-needs communities to bolster success for at-risk students and schools. His conviction to give back to our local public education structure spurred him to step down from his position with City Year to focus on improving our system as a Dallas ISD Trustee candidate. A husband and father of two soon-to-be Lipscomb Elementary students, Alex spent the last six years working at the district level, meeting with Dallas ISD trustees and administrators, challenging them to listen to students and parents.
Alex Enriquez prioritizes community, equity and excellence. “DISD has to start intentionally prioritizing those three values if it wants to gain back the trust of Dallas families,” he says. Alex has his ear to the ground and knows the pulse of our community. He believes in Dallas ISD, saying those in leadership should believe in it, too. “Parents and neighbors want to ask questions and get involved in the educational system, but too often, instead of welcoming their interest, they are negatively received by current Trustees and administrators,” he says. “As a Trustee, my decisions will not be made unilaterally

but in partnership with the community. “I do not want to sit on the sidelines,” Alex says. “The strength of neighborhood schools impacts our children, property values, and the prosperity of Dallas as a whole. I believe in DISD, and as your trustee, I will work alongside parents, students, teachers, and neighbors to provide every DISD student high-quality educational opportunities.”

IF YOU’VE EVER LIFTED A TOILET SEAT and felt a little squeamish about touching the mysterious liquids on the back, Richard Harris can help you get a handle on the problem. The Casa View neighbor is the sole distributor of the Sani Hani, a plastic antimicrobial handle that attaches to the underside of a toilet seat and provides users with an alternative to physically touching the seat. “There has to be something other than using your foot or your hand,” Harris says. “That’s still archaic to me. I came across this product and said, ‘This is genius.’ It’s so simple, so needed.” A three-time survivor of nonHodgkin’s lymphoma, Harris became more aware of germs and bacteria during his hospital stays over the past 10 years. When he discovered Sani Hani, he installed the sanitary device in the hospital’s staff bathroom and public restroom. “If I had picked up anything in the bathroom, I had no immune system,” he says. He became so passionate about the product that he used his skills as a former private investigator to track down the inventor. The two struck a deal, and Harris and his wife received exclusive worldwide marketing and distribution rights. Harris always carries a toilet seat with him when he goes to visit clients. When he arrives, he puts the seat on their desk and says, “You don’t mind if I put my toilet seat here, do you?” It’s a persuasive tactic. Through their business, Flushed with Pride, the couple have sold thousands of Sani Hanis to individuals and commercial businesses throughout the United States. In December, sales skyrocketed when the digital magazine Bustle included Sani

It’s also in high-traffic areas like hospitals, schools, airports, banks and gyms.
“I see this being as common and ubiquitous as toilet paper.” “I see this being as common and ubiquitous as toilet paper,” Harris says. The Sani Hani, short for “sanitary handle,” is made with plastic that’s infused with antimicrobial ingredients that stop the growth of various bacteria like E. coli, salmonella, staph and listeria, according to Food and Drug Administration reports. It’s ergonomically designed to
extend away from the toilet and slope downward so it won’t get in the way while you’re doing your business. The Harrises also experimented with adhesives until they found the current one, which can withstand up to 20 pounds of downward pressure and last up to 10 years. The package even comes with an alcohol pad and two adhesive strips that can be stacked on top of each other to fit slightly curved toilet seats. In February 2019, the couple auditioned for “Shark Tank” at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center. None of the sharks took the bait, but they plan to try again as they introduce product variations, which may include portable handles. “Sometimes [the back of a toilet seat] is wet and yucky. Isn’t this much more sanitary? It just makes sense,” Harris says. “That’s why our motto is: ‘We’re No.1 for No.1. Everybody needs a lift now and then, and we have a handle on it.’” The Sani Hani can be purchased for less than $10 at Ace Hardware in Lakewood, Lowe’s online store and Amazon.

ZIPPER = ZEAL Who needs a Ring doorbell when a true watchdog, Zipper, is around to protect the neighborhood? About a year ago, the 10-year-old mutt started barking at 2 a.m. When owner Margaret Bowie Hirschman got up to investigate, she saw a man breaking into her car. She called the police, and they caught the burglar — who had looted several cars in the neighborhood — within 30 minutes. “Zipper was famous for protecting our neighborhood,” Hirschman says. “All the neighbors were bringing her stuff and congratulating her. She was real proud of herself.” When Zipper isn’t on guard duty, she likes to play with Hirschman’s granddaughter and wait for the snacks to drop. The 9-year-old girl loved the children’s show “Kipper,” but she couldn’t pronounce the K. When Hirschman adopted the dog from East Lake Pet Orphanage, her granddaughter named the pet Zipper instead. The name fit. “She zips around all the time,” Hirschman says. —JAIME DUNAWAY GOT A PET YOU WANT US TO FEATURE?

HOPELESS RAMEN-TIC WAYA JAPANESE IZAKAYA GETS EVERYBODY HEATED UP
The Spicy Tonkotsu is one of the most popular dishes.
DAISUKE MORI loves ramen. He says he eats it once a day, every day. He turned that love into his new restaurant, WAYA Japanese Izakaya. Mori is originally from Tokyo but lived in Honolulu for a while. He dreamed of starting a business on the mainland, so he looked at places like San Francisco and Los Angeles. After realizing that big Japanese companies like Toyota were in Texas, he turned his sights to Dallas. After moving in 2017, he opened the Creek Café in 2018. He soon turned it into WAYA Japanese Izakaya after customers requested more authentic Japanese food. “A lot of customers asked for more Japanese,” Mori says. The most popular ramen dish is the

THE SHACK
he home at 1518 Abrams Road may be called “The Shack,” but it’s not your typical shanty made with broken wood boards and a corrugated metal roof. The residence is a work of art lovingly created over decades by stained glass artist Roger McIntosh. Although subsequent owners have added their own touches to the 100-year-old house, every handmade window, mirror, lamp and light fixture that remain are a testament to the man who made the quirky cottage his home.

earned her a Preservation Dallas award in 2019. “It’s a work of art that needed saving,” Raith says. “The only way to save it was to buy it and do it. It’s taken everything I’ve had for 15 years.” The Shack started in 1918 as a two-story garage, consisting of a two-bedroom apartment with no plumbing located above a double garage with dirt floors. It was owned by William Lipscomb, who planned to build a proper residence on the property. After he died in a church shooting, his widow sold the lot to McIntosh’s mother in 1922. A few years later, she “sold” it to her son for $10. McIntosh nicknamed the building “The Shack” and began renovations. The first task was pouring concrete over the dirt floors to create a downstairs workshop and living room. The living room contains one of the home’s first pieces of stained glass Roger McIntosh created a metal spider spinning a web in an empty archway.
— a casement window adorned with various motifs, such as a gnome, ship and eagle. Although McIntosh pieces can be seen throughout Dallas — at the Adolphus Hotel and Munger Place Church — most of his work is located in his home. In the kitchen, there’s a colorful panel of a chicken with her eggs, and in the sitting room, a knight is on his knees before a lovely lady. McIntosh poured his creative energy into the house. In addition to creating stained glass, he made a metal sculpture of a spider spinning its web in an empty archway. He also carved and fitted almost every piece of wood — from cabinets and shelves to bookcases — in the home. The artist set up his atelier in a space off the living room. Raith still has some of his drills, saws and other tools hanging from wall hooks, along with her own belongings. The former set decorator has adorned the home’s many niches and nooks with family heirlooms, a collection of glass tomato dishes, mementos from “Walker, Texas Ranger” and a small Donald Trump cat toy filled with pushpins. “I didn’t want the Roger McIntosh museum,” Raith says. “I wanted some of his pieces, but I have my own stuff.” McIntosh never found an item that couldn’t be reused in his home. Empty fruit cans became light fixtures, and old bricks paved the patio floor. Likewise, Raith has filled the house with scavenged items. For

40 years, she hoarded two half rolls of wallpaper until she found the perfect place to display the psychedelic print. Raith has made the house her home while staying true to McIntosh’s vision. When a hailstorm destroyed a skylight in the kitchen and drenched the countertops, causing them to rupture, she replaced them with marble that matched the original floor in the solarium. “Anytime I do anything, I think, ‘What would Roger and [his wife] Georgia do?’” Raith says. “It’s always a guesstimation.” Besides replacing rotting cabinets and restoring features damaged in storms, the only room Raith has remodeled is a downstairs closet, which is now a wet room with a shower Raith educates visitors on the history of the home during various neighborhood home tours.

and original bathtub. She also added a penny floor, made with $110 worth of pennies, in the kitchen. She doesn’t think McIntosh would mind the unusual addition. Anywhere the artist had a chance to embellish, he did.
Did you know? The Shack was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
The master bedroom and bathroom are upstairs, overlooking a large garden that separates the residence from the busy boulevard. Generations of additions have been cobbled together to form the home’s exterior, which is almost unrecognizable from its original shape. But there’s no mistaking “The Shack.” McIntosh engraved the beloved nickname into a glass medallion on the front door. “It’s a fun house,” Raith says. “I have curated chaos. Everything has a story behind it.”

The Advocate periodically features new businesses in our neighborhood, especially those that join the Greater East Dallas Chamber of Commerce (eastdallaschamber.com). The Chamber hosts monthly membership meetings at the Lakewood Country Club, along with a variety of informational and networking groups the remainder of the month.

WHEN YOU WALK INTO THE HOME at 154 Bon Aire Drive on the northeast side of White Rock Lake, a decorating wall opposite the entrance blocks your view of the interior. It’s an unusual concept, considering open spaces have been the dominant architectural trend in residential design for decades. But the wall is there for a reason. When you walk around, you’ll see a terraced oasis bordered by lush woods through large, red doors. It’s the “ah-ha” moment owner Suzy Renz was hoping for when she and her husband remodeled the 3,400-square-foot home three years ago. “I didn’t know what it was going to be,” she says. “I just knew it could be changed.” The industrial, eclectic farmhouse is perched atop two creek valleys and shielded by an old grove of trees. Renz — a Master Gardener since 2002 — set about transforming the 1-acre property

into a modern, eco-friendly garden that works with nature, not against it. Instead of grass, which requires consistent watering and mowing, she opted for a backyard covered in decomposed granite, like the kind found in nature. The steep landscape is divided into two levels with stone switchbacks that protect the hill from excessive erosion. A fire pit is on the bottom level, and on the top, a

waterfall cascades into a swimming pool that looks more like a pond. To the left of the pool sits a multicolored garden shed. Push on the old, rusty rake that serves as a door handle and enter the space filled with gardening tools, bags of soil and antique birdhouses. “I didn’t grow up in a gardening family, but I had pride of ownership and wanted to make it pretty,” Renz says. “I realized I had a real love for plants.” The animals love them too. The couple has seen all types of wildlife — from coyotes and bobcats to birds, raccoons and possums. A queen bee found the pollinator paradise and established her colony in a nearby tree. On cool summer evenings, the homeowners can hear frogs while they watch TV in their screened-in porch. “We’re surrounded by all this nature, and it’s so serene,” Renz says. “It really feels like we’re living in a treehouse.”
Most of the decorations in the home come from antique shows in Round Top.

“We’re colorful people. We don’t want a generic house because we’re not generic people.”
Renz is a self-proclaimed “plantaholic.” The 400-foot flowerbed in front of the house contains hundreds of plants, including green shrubs for year-round interest and perennials that fill her garden with colorful blooms all spring, summer and fall. The home’s interior is just as colorful as its exterior. One of the most striking features is the “ruler wall,” which is covered in brightly colored measuring sticks that once served as advertisements for railroads, banks, businesses and more. Renz’s collection features 188 yardsticks from Texas, Kansas and Nebraska that she laid out and organized on the floor before securing to her wall. Extras became trim in the upstairs bathroom. “We like color,” Renz says. “We’re colorful people. We don’t want a generic house because we’re not generic people. I don’t want a brand new build because that’s not me.” The one-bedroom, two-and-a-half bath home mixes modern, industrial and farmhouse styles to evoke an appreciation for the past. The couple eschews cookie-cutter pieces and opts for fixtures and furnishings plucked from flea markets, vintage shops and antique shows. The top of the dining room table was once the floor of an 18-wheeler. The light fixture above it was from a chicken coop. A lamp made from a wallpaper spool sits on an end table in

the living room. A 1940s-era factory mold hangs above the fireplace. A green box on a metal stand in their bedroom served as the post office for a Kansas town in the 1880s. The knobs on the kitchen cabinets are garden hose faucets. “We’re collectors,” Renz says. “I like things with a story, even if I don’t know it. I like to know that it had a previous a life.” The couple’s maximalist philosophy doesn’t stop with the décor. A mix of reclaimed wooden beams, shiplap paneling and corrugated metal lines the walls, vying for the eye’s attention
against the patterned floors and colorful doors. Even the washroom in the garage is covered from floor to ceiling in bottle caps. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, take a deep breath and look out the home’s large windows that bring the outside in. “When I saw [the property] in person, I said, ‘This is home,’” Renz says. “I loved my old house, but this is it. This is the one.” lakewood.advocatemag.com

SCHOOL BOARD ELECTION PRIMER MEET THREE CANDIDATES VYING FOR THE DISTRICT 2 DALLAS ISD POSITION THREE HOPEFULS are campaigning for the District 2 Dallas ISD school board seat. Who’s applying for the job? Munger Place neighbor Alex Enriquez and Lakewood resident Nancy Rodriguez are trying to unseat incumbent Dustin Marshall, who has served in the position since 2016. The future trustee, who will represent East Dallas, Preston Hollow and the area surrounding the Park
Cities, won’t dictate how the district operates on a day-to-day basis. Instead, he or she will guide policy, advocate for the community and consider how to spend a multibillion-dollar bond if voters approve the package this November. Get to know your candidates and their top priorities with our election cheat sheet.
ALEX ENRIQUEZ
DUSTIN MARSHALL
NANCY RODRIGUEZ
Why do you want to run for this position? I’ve had too many playground conversations about whether Dallas families can trust DISD to act in the best interest of their children. DISD is facing a crisis of trust. That trust can only be earned through intentional partnerships with students, parents, teachers and neighbors. I believe in DISD, am a product of DISD and am deeply invested in DISD. As trustee, I will stand up for strong neighborhood schools.
Why do you want to run for re-election? DISD is in the midst of a turnaround that has been led by the current board, and it is critical that the board maintain a consistent commitment to the vision and strategies that we’ve pursued the last several years. We are transforming the lives of students, and I’m honored to be part of this progress. Another three-year term will enable us to deepen and broaden our impact.
Why do you want to run for this position? I’ve done a great deal of work in public schools, and we have some urgent needs. When parents speak up, the district is dismissive and discourteous. I voted for the incumbent trustee three years ago because he assured me that he would address these problems on a system-wide basis. I’ve been disappointed, so I decided to run.
How will your previous experience help you as a trustee? I am a third-generation DISD graduate, was the founding executive director of City Year Dallas for the last six years and served on Lipscomb Elementary’s Site-Based Decision-Making Committee for four years, including three years as chair. These experiences gave me a deep knowledge of the history and inner workings of our schools. What are your top priorities? The three pillars of my campaign are community, equity and excellence. u
Why should neighbors vote for you again? I’ve already illustrated my ability to influence change and build consensus through my leadership in spearheading the development of our principal training program, overhauling our dyslexia intervention, expanding services for homeless kids, substantially changing our special education department, changing our sexual health curriculum, investing in new and improved facilities, increasing teacher pay and continuing the expansion of choice schools. I’ve been a consistent community advocate and have worked hard to u
How will your previous experience help? I’ve had a great deal of real-life experience with DISD, both as a parent of two kids and as an advocate for kids with special needs. There is a huge disconnect between how the district presents itself to the board and how it actually operates. Trustees who lack that kind of in-the-trenches experience have a real handicap because they just don’t understand what is actually going on in our schools. What are your top priorities? Our biggest problem is one of district culture. We need to stop seeing parents and community members as adversaries and start seeing them as u

ALEX ENRIQUEZ (CONTINUED) Three issues are consistently brought up as the greatest concerns: • Program fidelity: DISD must fulfill the promises of specialized programs. Leadership cannot be more concerned with press releases than with longterm student success. • Safety: We must intentionally foster a safe and inclusive environment for all students by fully funding mental health and other social services. • Bond: The board must use its political capital to ensure every student a highquality learning environment. What distinguishes you from the other candidates? I believe in DISD, not just in theory, but in practice. I moved into my neighborhood so my kids could go to DISD schools. My policy knowledge is the most comprehensive among the candidates. My understanding includes how education policy actually affects Dallas students and how to most effectively advocate for policies that benefit my community. 5. How do you plan on governing? A school board representative must have a pulse on the community. I will listen to community concerns and seek solutions that work in our unique neighborhoods. Trustees can and should work with neighbors through collective leadership, not in a unilateral or transactional manner.

DUSTIN MARSHALL (CONTINUED) communicate with constituents. We still have room for improvement, but we are headed in the right direction. What are your top priorities? • Improving student outcomes • Rewarding our best teachers • Supporting school choice • Investing in facilities • Transforming special education What distinguishes you from the other candidates? I’ve consistently invested my time, energy and resources in only one cause: advancing student outcomes. I’ve served on the boards of Reading Partners, Uplift Education, Social Venture Partners, Dallas After School, the Education Council for the Dallas Regional Chamber and the Woodrow Community Foundation. I’ve helped launch several schools, tutored and mentored dozens of kids and completed several leadership training programs. How do you plan on governing? You must focus on your formal role, which includes setting policy, managing the superintendent and approving the budget. You must resist the urge to proactively involve yourself in the day-today operation of the district. You must also be attentive to your informal roles as district cheerleader, ambassador for the district and advocate for families.
NANCY RODRIGUEZ (CONTINUED) partners. I’m also discovering that we need much tighter financial controls. Special education services in the district are poor. Finally, we need to better support our teachers. What distinguishes you from the other candidates? Neither of my opponents has kids in DISD, and I know neither of them has spent the hundreds, if not thousands, of hours that I have wrangling with our schools to get our kids really basic, common-sense stuff. I am also the only woman in this race and the only Spanish speaker. As a Latina, I understand the Hispanic culture, and I can engage parents who would like to participate but don’t feel they can. How do you plan on governing? My No. 1 priority will be to listen to parents and the community. I can’t run around personally solving every issue that arises in a school system of 150,000 kids, but I can certainly hold the administration accountable to do so. The school board election scheduled to take place May 2 can be postponed until the Nov. 3 general election because of the coronavirus pandemic, Gov. Greg Abbott says. If no candidate receives a majority of votes, a runoff election will follow. The elected candidate will serve a three-year term.

The grandest lady in the Easter parade Liz Simmons organized the Very Fifteenth Ever Newellian Easter celebration
E
aster Sunday, for many, is a day of family gatherings, egg hunts, reflection and renewal. But for some East Dallas neighbors, it’s a Newellian Day. Participants in the Very Fifteenth Ever Newellian Easter Parade will march down Newell Avenue in Hollywood Heights between Lindsley and Santa Fe at 3 p.m. April 12. Bonus: The grand marshal is Emmy-winning actor and soap opera star Vincent Irizarry, the handsome Dr. Armstrong on “The Bold and the Beautiful.” Although it’s definitely family friendly, it’s not exactly your mama’s parade, which is not surprising, given the mastermind. She’s the one and only Liz Simmons, owner of the brighter-than-Vegas yard displays at her home on Newell at Christmas and Halloween. She says the parade took shape one evening years ago when she was enjoying adult libations and a game of Dog-Opoly with her friends “Twig” and Kimberly on the front porch. She mentioned that she’d always wanted to plan an Easter parade. Neighbors immediately hopped on the idea and formed the Newellian Bunny Board, a group of volunteers which has produced the parade every year since. Newellian Bunny Board member Lesley “Pookie” Lingnell has been involved in every parade since it began. During the first year, she pulled her baby boy in a decorated wagon. Since then, she’s ridden in a horse-drawn carriage, pulled Santa’s sleigh and donned a mosquito costume. Her greatest honor? Riding on the potty float, which Liz builds every year.

Liz Simmons and the Bunny Board organize an Easter parade every year in their neighborhood. (Photography by Andrew Williams.)
Every year is different. However, Station 19 firefighters always lead off the parade, and Dallas police officers monitor traffic at Lindsley and Newell. Simmons reiterates one important rule: There are no rules. “Anything goes,” she says. “Freedom to be creative and express yourself is important.”
“Every year my husband and I say, ‘We are so lucky to live in this neighborhood.’” Lingnell suggests building a float or riding your tricked-out bike, pogo stick, scooter, big wheel, roller skates or skateboard. She adds, “Strap those cute babies in the Radio Flyer or push ‘em in the stroller — bunny ears are encouraged.” Animals are welcome too. “We love to showcase pets, such as snakes, threelegged dogs, pot-bellied pigs and pet rats,” Lingnell says. If you’re picturing sweet bunny costumes and lovely bonnets, you’re partially
right. Along with such cuteness, you’re just as likely to see big, creepy bunnies chomping cigars and The Bonnet Brigade, adults wearing elaborately adorned chapeaux. Themed floats have ranged from pillaging vikings, flying saucers and Telletubbies to hillbilly bands on vintage firetrucks. Golf carts have been transformed into giant pigs and ducks. Also, 24-foot chocolate bunnies and Peeps make appearances. Expect Elvis to walk down Newell and wave to the crowd, along with his buddy Santa, apparently needing a break from the North Pole. There’s also the gorilla group, possibly wearing hot pink bikinis and dancing to disco music. Or will they wear pink tutus? Bunnies abound, handing out candy and rubber snakes to kids and Jello shots to adults. They crack cascarones on the heads of unsuspecting spectators and generally get into mischief. The neighbors along the street love it. Taren Mandeville and her family look forward to it every year. The last couple of years, Mandeville’s 6-year-old daughter, Kellyn, has rolled down Newell in her grandpa’s gold 1968 Camaro and his mint green ’65 Chevy truck.

V isit us today for North Texas’ best tropicals, annuals, perennials and more. Step in the store Grand Marshal Vincent Irizarry.
Joe Kacynski is another neighbor who’s a fan and frequent participant. His float themes have included “There’s no place like home” from the “Wizard of Oz” and “Beach Blanket Bingo.” This year’s float will have a soap theme in a nod to the soap opera star grand marshal. “It’s top secret,” he says. “Let’s just say rubber duckies will be involved.” Neighbor and friend to the Bunny Board, Belynda Ortiz, gets credit for securing the famous grand marshal. She became acquainted with Irizarry at a fan convention, stayed in touch and convinced him to be in the parade. He joins the ranks of former grand marshals Kinky Friedman — a singer, songwriter and author — and Mike Castellucci, a local journalist. “The parade is an exuberant, sensational coming together of the neighborhood,” Mandeville says. “The Bunny Board is a special group of people that manages to put on a fun event for everyone. Every year, I’m amazed at the talent and effort put into it, and every year my husband and I say, ‘We are so lucky to live in this neighborhood.’”

DISCIPLES OF CHRIST
B
eing a hugging pastor, the social distancing discipline we are engaged in nowadays because of the coronavirus is hard for me. If you ask most people what ministers and religious communities have to offer people, “believing” comes first to mind. Believing in God and in themselves. But believing is as social as it is personal. Belonging and believing go together, so much so that sociologists of religion argue over which comes first. Belonging is winning, by the way. It’s more plausible to believe we are loved and accepted by God when we are loved and accepted by spiritual communities that gather around God’s name. That’s what makes practices of inclusion so healing and those of exclusion so painful. Isolation doesn’t just hamper our social life. It dampens our spiritual life. Nonetheless, churches, synagogues and mosques all over Dallas are doing exactly what they should in the face of this hyper-contagious virus — keeping a safe distance from and avoiding intimate contact with fellow believers and neighbors. It’s against our sacred nature, but it’s consistent with our sacred duty. My son-in-law, who is a pastor, said this to his congregation: “Social distancing is like chemotherapy for this pandemic. It’s the toxin to contain the disease. This is not ideal. But these are not ideal times. This is a time we will be giving up something big for something good.” During the Ebola crisis in 2014, our church was in the middle of the maelstrom. The dear man who died of the terrible virus came to the United States from Liberia to marry his old flame. Louise Troh lost her fiancé, who was also the father of her 19-year-old son. She was, and is, a member of our church. Ebola is deadly but hard to transmit. The coronavirus is caught as easily as the flu. The coronavirus kills at a rate only slightly

higher than the seasonal flu, and it is primarily deadly to those with compromised immune systems. I say often that fear moves us away from people, while love moves us toward them. That is still true, but in this rare instance, moving toward them lovingly includes moving away from them temporarily. Then, like now, our city is anxious. Now, like then, our elected officials and health experts have done their jobs with prudence and grace. They have kept us informed and used their powers to protect the virus from spreading, which sometimes means protecting us from ourselves.
Fear moves us away from people, while love moves us toward them.

Most faith leaders have shown we can believe in God and science at the same time. Truth is truth, wherever it is found. Thanks to technology, which we often bemoan as a threat to spirituality, we are able to worship and stay in touch virtually. We are missing the hugs, maybe me most of all. But God willing — inshallah, as our Muslim friends say — we will make up for it soon, and our appreciation for social intimacy will be the greater. Until then, we will love our neighbors creatively, but cautiously. GEORGE MASON is pastor of Wilshire Baptist Church, president of Faith Commons and host of the “Good God” podcast. The Worship section is underwritten by Advocate Publishing and the neighborhood businesses and churches listed here. For information about helping support the Worship section, call 214.560.4202.

OUR CITY
By MITA HAVLICK
How advocacy is just like parenting Sleepless nights, scant thanks, long slog — but it’s worth it
I
will preface the following by saying that I have great kids who are lovely young people. That said, they were terrible babies. From the colic to the crying and the sleepless nights, both were a nightmare. Perhaps some of that can be attributed to poor infant parenting, but until they were 6 months old, it was tough going. After my husband and I had cleaned up poop that our son had shot across the room and onto a wall, we reminded each other, “It’s got to get better. People keep doing it.” We did keep doing it. We had another child because memories are short when it comes to the hard times. No longer parental newbies, we thought, “Surely this one will be better.” Alas, no. Instead of pooping on us, our daughter was an infant vomiter. She could have been in “The Exorcist IV.” We were shocked that she gained weight at every checkup because at most meals, a good chunk of it came back up. We stopped going out to eat for almost a year because we realized it wasn’t fair for waitstaff to clean up someone else’s puke. We didn’t have another one after that, but like most parents — no matter how tough the road, no matter how much poop and vomit you clean up, no matter the hours you could have spent sleeping in — we wouldn’t give it up for a second. Even the teenage years are worth it. Having the opportunity to love and nurture tiny blobs who mature into functioning adults is a privilege. Advocacy is not unlike parenting. It’s a long row to sow, and you don’t do it for the door prizes. In fact, when I compare
the two, the similarities are evident. Every day in our community, I meet and work next to people who are amazing human beings who deal with everything in the chart. They are raising terrible babies who aren’t little people, but issues that need to be addressed, wrongs that need to be righted and fights that need to be won. They give voice to those who don’t know how to speak. They do this not for personal recognition, awards or accolades, but because it’s in their heart and feeds their soul.
It can be truly tiring. For every issue you’re advocating, there’s someone on the other side who’s advocating for the opposite. Oftentimes, opponents have valid reasons filled with solid data. Like parenting, there’s little instant gratification in advocacy. You have to be committed and always keep your eyes on long-term goals because once you’re done fighting for a particular cause, you may have to wait months, sometimes years, to see if your effort had its intended consequences. It’s kind of like in my early 20s, when I finally realized and told my mother how
much I appreciate her. Just like being a mom, the rewards in advocacy can be immense. A few weeks ago, a Dallas ISD director told me that one of the reasons the district can offer career and technical education programs next year is because of an advocacy effort in which I was involved. I wanted to cry and probably came pretty close. I remembered dragging fellow warriors into the battle and our hard slog and sleepless nights. It was a team effort of committed people who reached out to their networks to try to change the course of public education in Dallas. We were anxious when it was time for the school board to vote. The board was solidly 5-4 at the time, and passage of the policy required a super-majority of six votes. After much back-and-forth discussion among trustees, the board did indeed vote 6-3 in favor of the policy. We whooped and rejoiced — first in the auditorium and then soon after at a Tex-Mex restaurant to celebrate with margaritas. The first part of the policy would have immediate benefits, but we had no idea what the scale of positive impact would be down the road. That was four years ago this month. Our “baby” has grown up, and we are proud. Beyond that, we were thanked. Just like parenting, it’s all worth it. MITA HAVLICK is neighborhood resident and Dallas Education Foundation director.
