Allan Zartman has spent the past 15 years saving memories for other people, a job that continuously brings him joy.

How Allan Zartman is saving memories
Story by LILLIAN JUAREZ Photography by VICTORIA GOMEZ
it’s 2003. Allan Zartman made sure he captured everything from his daughter’s communion to high school milestones at Woodrow Wilson on his dandy camcorder.
“It’s what I do, preserve memories,” says the East Dallas resident.
Eventually, he was filming for parents who left their cameras at home. Since Zartman helped them in a pinch, they were willing to pay for copies.
It wasn’t a formal business.
Over time, Zartman realized the potential of his hobby and there was a large market for reel-to-reel transfers back in the early 2000s. So, he had an idea.
“I just thought, ‘Well huh, let’s see if I can do this part-time,’” he says.
Daily, Zartman was clocking in at home to convert VHS tapes into digital formats, along with recording canon moments for Lakewood families. As word spread that he was the local go-to film guy, he gained a loyal following. In 2008, Zartman Studios Productions was created.
“[The reel-to-reel transfer] preserves it for many generations to come,” Zartman says. “It’s an opportunity to share memories that would easily be forgotten over time.”
It’s a job that requires lots of trust from strangers.
The job pays the bills. But Zartman isn’t in the business for the money. His passion for the work lies in the families he gets to work with.
“What I enjoy the most is the fact that I can see people are really happy to see [moments] they had forgotten,” he says. “It makes tears come to their eyes because it’s a happy moment.”
There are over 20 projects on the docket, some of which involve converting more than 100 tapes.
So how does he do it?
First, it starts with getting the reel from a client and putting it into a film scanner that takes pictures of each cell of the reel. This process varies depending on the length of the reel (a typical reel is 50 feet long), but anywhere from one to two hours is usual for him.
He compares it to how an old cartoon is made, picture by picture, flipping through to show a moving character.
Once the film scanner is finished, it saves as a series of photos on a video file where he then puts the movie on Sony editor to tweak for higher quality.
On average, Zartman spends about 10 hours a day converting reels to digital copies.
On average Zartman is transferring over 100 tapes and DVD's a day.
“I treat it as if it was mine,” he says. “[If] I’m gonna give it to a customer, I want to make sure that I take care of it as much as I can because it’d be really bad if I didn’t take good care [of it] and I tore a tape out.”
As technology progresses and traditional film becomes obsolete, some people worry about preserving their old footage.
On average tapes degrade 10% to 20% over 10 to 25 years, whether it be from weather conditions, color loss, a broken reel, blacked-out scenes and overall rotting of the film. Not to mention that DVD and VHS players have become less prevalent.
Neighbor Brenda Brown feared she’d lose all of her family videos, which explains why she dropped off almost 150 tapes, a “grotesque amount,” she says.
Brown says she searched everywhere in Dallas for someone who specialized in reel-to-digital transfers but couldn’t find someone as detailed as Zartman.
Much of her film was old and low quality, and Brown knew it would be harder on Zartman to transfer the clips into a higher quality, but she remained trustful to his work.
“I’d rather have a fuzzy picture of a family event than a glossy picture that doesn’t exist,” Brown says as she refers to others' work.
Once she received the digital copies, she and the rest of the family relived 40 years of memories — a gift she believes will be treasured for generations to come.
Although Zartman is not related to the Browns, she says his work has led him to become part of the family.
“We don’t know him [and] we don’t have him in our family but he is a part of our family,” she says.
Every project is different and presents its unique challenges. Some transfers take only a few hours and others, like a short documentary, take several days.
Zartman, who attends St. Thomas Aquinas off Mocking -
bird and Abrams, was asked to make a 60th-anniversary documentary for the church consisting of music, the narration of a 20-page script and old photos.
Church member Kim Campise says they were looking for someone to create a video for the church’s big celebration, little did they know talent was right in front of them.
“All of us were just in awe of it and amazed … a lot of the older generation are not here anymore but at that time so many of them were still there and it just brought back a lot of memories,” Campise says. “It was really special to everybody and we were just so excited to see it … it really is a big part of the treasure of our history.”
Campise says it was a mixture of the right people at the right time, and because of Zartman, they will be able to savor such history.
“We knew he helped at church, we knew he did photography and videography, but I had no idea the extent of what he could do … and what he continues to do.”w
From St. Thomas Aquinas beginning in 1947 to 60 years later, Zartman compiled every milestone and small moment for the church to watch. It was a big project, and many church members, including him, were moved by his work.
“When I look at that … to me I get chills … I never realized I could create something like that,” he says.
It’s a job he takes pride in, despite him being tired at times and having no free time, a perfectionist like him doesn’t care, he’s going to keep going for as long as he can.
“The one thing that I really love about this job is it makes people happy,” Zartman says. “I feel like I’m making [a difference] because they’re seeing people that may have passed away or they don’t remember things, or a cousin they may never have seen before, it happens so much that I feel like that’s what I’m good at doing … and I can make people happy this way.”

7 Lakewood/East Dallas Marketplace finds
Story by ALYSSA HIGH
3-Doll set of 1940s Ilse Ludecke cloth dolls
These vintage 1940s Ilse Ludecke cloth dolls stand at 14 inches tall. Each has a muslin center-stitched face with pressed and painted facial features and stuffed bodies. The dolls were popularized for their varied facial expressions, fantasy folklore costumes and booklets describing their region, not unlike today’s American Girl dolls. The dolls are marked with “Ilse Luducke Trachtenpuppen” on the base and are being sold for $550.
Child/Animal-sized real autopsy table
Okay, this one is a bit weird. One Dallasite is selling a vintage child/animal-sized autopsy table for $1,500. According to the owner, the doctor who used it was asked to remove any discarded sharps out of the central gaps, but there may be some left over (oops?). For those looking for something unique in the home, the table is selling for $1,500 but the owner is willing to trade for a trike, motorbike or go-kart.
Antique Mahjong Set from 1920s
As Mahjong grows in popularity, this antique is one you might want to pull out and use. The 1920s collector’s set comes in a wood box with brass handles and accents. Each tile is bamboo and includes all pieces (though not jokers, as those were not included at that time period, the owner says). The set is being sold for $575.
1920s Metal/cast iron dental chair
As long as you aren’t afraid of the dentist, this antique metal and cast iron Ries Manufacturing Company dental chair is definitely a conversation starter. The light is in working condition, and if it doesn’t look like a medieval torture device to you, this find will ring up at $655.
1920s Vintage Starr Phonograph
This century-old record player looks like a cabinet upon first glance. Once open, it operates with a hand-crank (no electricity, can you imagine?). The seller is listing it at $200 with a stack of records and needles.
1860s Victorian Chair
This chair was bought at a New York auction and was originally used as a chair to sit in and take pictures. These wicker “posing chairs” became a staple for early photographers because they were light, easy to transport and breathable to keep cool under the hot lights of photography studios. This chair’s East Dallas owner is selling theirs for $475.
18th Century Solid Wood/Iron Tibetan Temple Door
This Tibetan temple door has a handforged door-knocker/handle and is made of solid wood, according to the owner, who also suggests using it for a tabletop, a headboard or just as an art piece. The door is going for $350.

Selena and Jim Dixon use their front yard to display miniature art.
THE PETIT GALERIE
Jim and Selena Dixon make our neighborhood a little more beautiful
Story by SIMON PRUITT
Photography by LAUREN ALLEN
“As you might guess, geologists like to be outdoors,” says Selena Dixon, showing off the latest update to Old Lake Highlands (OLH) Petit Galerie, her front-yard mini art gallery.
Selena and her husband Jim were career geologists, spending as much of their off-time outdoors as they could — now walking in their neighborhood. They were set up by a teaching assistant in a geology class they shared at Stony Brook University in New York and have now been married 50
years. They moved from Houston to Dallas in 2014 to be closer to their daughter and grandchildren, retiring shortly after.
“When you retire,” she says. “You’re supposed to challenge yourself.”
Selena says she’s always been interested in art, but never got the chance to truly dive into it due to her work.
“Everybody walks by this corner with their dogs,” she says. “I thought, you could put an art gallery out there. It gives people
APRIL 2024 lakewood.advocatemag.com 17
something to look at and a place to stop, visit and learn.”
That’s where Jim got involved.
“There are a few of those little libraries in our neighborhood which was kind of the inspiration,” he says. “Every time we walked by, I kind of looked at it and how it was built,” Jim says.
Jim found a blueprint similar to them on Etsy and adjusted the design to make sure the art could be easily viewed but remained safe.
“I modified the front so that there'd be more area to view,” he says. “I wanted it to be more secure, so we screwed the front on so people can’t go in there and fuss around.”
In November 2022, the OLH Petit Galerie was officially born, featuring all original art from Selena. The first installation was themed after the birds she saw in the neighborhood. Since then, she’s tailored themes around fruit, flowers and abstract designs.
“I do not try to one-up myself,” she says. “I would be crippled by it. Trying to do better than you did before? That’s a career thing. I'm retired. I don't have to torture myself like that anymore.”
In January 2024, the gallery featured work from Kay Wyne, a local artist that marks the first installation that wasn’t created by Selena.
“Painting large takes more paint and more time,” Wyne explains. “There’s a satisfaction to creating something and having a finished product on a faster timeline.”
Wyne isn’t limited to one artistic style. Her paintings range in size, format and concept. She created them at an art studio she shares with Selena and 10 other local artists.
“Selena saw my artwork in the Dutch Art Gallery and asked if I taught,” she explains. “I don’t teach, but I told her she could paint with me.”
Once Selena opened her own gallery, Wyne was the clear choice for the first featured artist.
“I’d love to have a rotation,” Selena says. “Especially people who don’t do what I do.”
OLH Petit Galerie is just over a year old, but the couple says they have no plans to stop doing it.
“As long as we can crawl out there, we’ll do it,” Jim jokes.

THE FLAVORS OF MEXICO CITY
An inside look at Ross Avenue's Bocado
Story by LILLIAN JUAREZ
Photography by KELSEY SHOEMAKER & LAUREN ALLEN
Nestled at the intersection of Ross and Hall, the hidden cantón Bocado feels like Mexico City.
“We want it to be authentic,” says Bocado coowner Jesus Almazan. “That's the main thing … we want to stay away from Tex-Mex, we don’t have anything against Tex-Mex restaurants … we [just] want to be an authentic Mexican restaurant.”
The year was 2022 and Almazan and Humberto Novoa were scavenging through Mexico for the ideal restaurant and bar embodying authentic cuisines, tasty drinks and good vibes to bring to Dallas.
They searched everywhere: Monterrey, Mexico City, Guadalajara, San Luis Potosi, Puebla and Tulum. But none of the places aligned with the duo's vision.
Novoa, CEO of a Mexican record label, envisioned something bigger, a place frequented by artists, and those who didn’t feel exclusive to be in their vicinity.
So Novoa had an idea.
“Why don’t we just make our own restaurant, and treat everybody like an artist?”
With a clear plan in mind, the duo set out to find a location for their new restaurant concept in Dallas. Their search led them to Dahlia. Its modern hacienda style was the exact place they had been searching for, Almazan says.
Bocado solidified its fate when the owners took over Dahlia’s LLC. And within 29 days of Dahlia’s closure in December, Bocado opened for a sneak peek Dec. 30.
Drawing inspiration from recent travels and childhood memories living in Mexico, Bocado’s

menu has a tapas-style approach, featuring small shareable plates of seafood and tacos such as sashimi shlomo, filete bañado, black sea bass and esquite fuego.
And for those wondering, Bocado is continuing Dahlia’s brunch legacy on Sundays with a female-led mariachi band underway.
Bocado’s Sunday brunch includes traditional staples such as chilaquiles verdes, burritos de huevo con chorizo, huevos divorciados and tortita ahogada.
The eclectic cocktail menu pays homage to Mexican culture through names, flavors and liquors. Crafted by Guillermo Trejo, also known as G, and Olando Orozco, who goes by Chino, they share that each cocktail tells a story.
For example, the Chocolate Abuelita martini, mixed with Milagro Reposado tequila, Baileys, Chocolate Abuelita and piloncillo syrup served in a small stainless milk barrel, similar to the way people bought milk in Mexico in the early ’90s.
“When it comes to the story behind the drink, I want you to have that cocktail [and] it needs to remind you of your grandma’s house when you were little drinking a Chocolate Abuelita,” he says.
Another signature cocktail, the paloma negra, consists of Casamigos silver with a mystery recipe inspired by a popular song often performed by mariachi bands in Mexico.
The restaurant encourages people to stay awhile and explore their next-door speakeasy, Alcatraz, which features club music, black booths, neon lights and interactive mirrors of old celebrities.
“When you come in here, I want [you] to feel like you're in one of those cool restaurants
and bars in Mexico City,” Alamazan says.
Since opening, the business has had consistent VIP tables in its speakeasy, daily reservations in its dining room and crowds of all ages flocking to the restaurant for drinks, Instagram content and food.
With Bocado staying busy, the company decided to expand its business and open a second location in downtown Fort Worth; the new restaurant is slated to open at the end of this year.
“I don’t want people to feel like they’re still in Dallas, I want them to feel like they’re in Mexico when they come experience this [place]. I want it to feel like [they’re] somewhere else, that’s my vision,” Alamazan says.
Bocado is open Thursday 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., Friday through Saturday 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Main Street Monopoly
Linda Bishop builds
her castle on the cusp of Deep Ellum
Story by SIMON PRUITT
Photography by KATHY TRAN
LINDA BISHOP doesn’t slow down. A career tattoo artist, she’s built up a mini-empire on the corner of Main Street, combining four completely different brands all under the same roof.
Bishop, who goes by “Little Linda” for her art, grew up in California, then worked as a tattoo artist in Miami before landing at Elm Street Tattoo in the early 2010s. She’s highly sought after in the industry, amassing 175,000 Instagram followers and being featured in tattoo magazines, Savage and Inked
“I kind of developed my own style,” she says. “People say it looks like etching or topographic maps. I hear all different things, but I couldn’t really describe it at all.”
The style she developed wasn’t just visual. After growing up working at different tattoo shops, she started noticing aesthetic and cultural trends that she wanted to change.
APRIL 2024 lakewood.advocatemag.com 39
Opposite page: Linda goes by “Little Linda” as a professional tattooer.
“My initial concept was really just to create an environment for my customers that was different from anything else they had been exposed to,” she says. “I thought, what can I do to create an environment that everybody vibes with and feels really comfortable?”
In 2017, she leased out a spot on the side of an aging red brick building, with an estimated market value of $24,270 and transformed it into Koneko Studio. She created the space just like her vision, a presentably posh tattoo shop, whose name translates to “kitten” in Japanese.
“I wanted to have this openness, calming, almost like a spa vibe but a tattoo shop,” she says. “That was the first approach. Then of
course, providing an atmosphere that was super clean and wasn’t so overwhelming.”
Koneko quickly became one of the city’s most popular tattoo destinations, but for reasons beyond the ink. Bishop felt like she could expand the Koneko brand beyond just tattoos and still be successful.
“If people are coming here and they love this experience,” Bishop explains. “It was almost like they wanted more things, like ‘what else can I do here? What else do you guys do here so I can come back?’”
Koneko answered the call, opening a small beauty salon in the back.

“I had some girlfriends that did cosmetic tattooing or esthetician services,” she says. “They were working in Koneko studio for a short period of time until we did the expansion.”
The salon side of Koneko Studio has been open for five years now, offering facials, hair services, lashes, nails and waxing. Their signature KonekoFacial is a 90-minute massage and personalized skin treatment for $245.
Adding yet again, Bishop set up a small pop-up table outside of Koneko Studio.
“My husband and I had been selling vintage since probably 2010,” Bishop says. “We did private sales to individuals and we sold oddities. It was really fun.”
In 2022, she opened Hey Koneko inside a vacant space next door in Suite 110. Koneko Studio is in 140.
“When this became available, I just took it.”
The interior is a beautiful olive green, with a collection of western-inspired jewelry and high-end vintage t-shirts.
Eight months ago, at the far left inside of Hey Koneko, Bishop installed her latest addition.
“Whenever we’re in Europe or Mexico City, I love that you go into a little boutique and it has some of the best coffee you’ve ever had,” she explains. “That’s what I want. I want to put the best coffee in some little spot that nobody knows about.”
Bishop couldn’t help herself. She opened Good Boy Cafe on the far left side of Hey Koneko, offering all types of espresso beverages, cookies and a collection of puppy art. Inside a vintage store named after kittens, it’s an obvious irony. Bishop’s own dog, Suki, is a popular fixture at Koneko Studio on weekends.
“I never took out a business loan, I never had a business part-
ner,” Bishop says proudly. “I've done everything on my own with all of the money that I've saved.”
Between tattoos, beauty salons, vintage clothing and coffee; if Linda Bishop likes it, she’s going to create it.
“I’ll never feel satisfied,” she says.

The right perspective comes from experience.
As a former Dallas County Prosecutor, District Attorney and State District Court Judge, Susan Hawk has presided over more than 25,000 criminal cases. Susan’s experience gives her a behind-the-bench perspective into the workings of cases, juries and judges that few attorneys can match. And her experience and passion for advocating for mental health brings an added focus on treatment over incarceration.
If you or someone you know is facing criminal charges, make sure they come to court with the advantage of an insider’s perspective. Because in crafting a defense, the right perspective is everything.

A HOME PERFECT FOR TWO
THE HOME IN THE TREES OF WHITE ROCK LAKE
Story by LILLIAN JUAREZ
Photography by LAUREN ALLEN
The home on the hills has a color scheme of greens, blues and gray to compliment their scenic view of White Rock Lake.
JULIA AND JOHN FRANCIS DIDN’T WANT A BIG HOME.
The family of three — their Boston Terrier, Jiggs, is the third member — just wanted something that felt like home. And in 2021 on a trip from Arizona to Dallas, a dozen houses later, the couple found what they were looking for perched on a hill just east of White Rock Lake.
“It was just a fit, it was a perfect fit,” Julia says.
The custom single-family home located in Wyatt Circle was built in 2010 by architect Cliff Welch and is being featured on the 16th annual White Rock Home Tour.
The exterior of the home consists of a mixture of sandy stones and dark bricks with a signature Welch door painted orange for a pop amongst its restrained color palette.
“We’ll use accent colors sparingly and typically it's the front door, it’s always a wonderful place for an accent,” Welch says. “It’s formento in the olive or the olive in the
martini when you get to the front door.”
With a nod to mid-century modern, the house utilizes light oaks with green, gray, blue and white accents, creating a calm and cool atmosphere for lounging and listening to jazz while sipping on Moscow mules and wine —the Francis’ favorite.
A 2,502 square foot home with two bedrooms and 2 1/2 bathrooms consists of a first floor with an open-concept kitchen, a master suite with an adjacent home office that can be utilized for an additional room, dining space and a guest bedroom.
The touches of blue accentuate the panoramic view of the lake that can be seen from an upstairs private balcony outside the master bedroom and a downstairs balcony for guests. The house hidden in the trees is strategically designed to take advantage of the view.
“I love our bedroom,” Julia says. “You almost feel like you're sitting up in a tree house because of how the trees

surround the property. We have this beautiful balcony that's off the bedroom [and] just feels really expansive. It's open and airy [with] windows which is what we like.”
A continuity of flowing spaces blends both the interior and exterior, upstairs and downstairs, making the home seamless.
Welch’s utilization of sustainable techniques in his design allows for an informal and relaxed ambiance, along with a metal roof reducing heat gain by acting as a natural radiant barrier from Texas heat. The indoor air quality was enhanced with a tight building envelope and the use of a carport in lieu of an attached garage.
On the second floor, images captured from the couple's photographic safari display various animals throughout the hallway. The travelers highlight it as a significant trip they’ll never forget.
Natural light is illuminated throughout the space through various large windows, a “great way to save on electricity,” Welch jokes.
Fascinating significant pieces from the couple’s personal and family background can be found throughout the home.
There’s John’s floating saxophone next to the stairway. Or maybe it's the 76-year-old Christmas Cactus that, yes, is still very much alive. Or perhaps the real elephant foot in the master bathroom might raise an eyebrow. Regardless, each piece has its own story.
Additional notable pieces are the aluminum floating fire pit in the living room and a large abstract Canadian painting The Enchanted Forest.
“We bought different pieces when we lived in other areas … we really felt like this speaks to the house and to the setting,” Julia says.
The openness of the home makes even a rainy day as enchanting as a summer day in Texas, she shares, confirming that there is no place like home.
“That’s the thing that we really love about the house is that it feels like we live in every space.”

Dallas Opera’s occupational health coordinator is a budding secondhand TikToker
Story by JEHADU ABSHIRO
Photography by YUVIE STYLES
HOW DOES A NOMAD MAKE A HOME?
First off, you buy one that’s been comfortably lived in. Lakewood, with its rolling lawns and massive century-old trees, is a good start. You pick a 70-year-old home that’s had a singular owner for more than 40 years — the kind of house where height markers on a door jamb have stood the test of time.
Then you fill it with items that have been loved at least once before.
For Sara Newman, who grew up in poverty in Michigan, secondhand goods are second nature.
“Shopping at thrift stores was a way of life because it meant survival. As I got older, that became a hobby and an interest,” says 35-year-old Newman.
Her mom taught her how to sew, and
thrift stores became a source for materials. She’d chop up her finds and make new items in their basement. At 19, Newman ran away to Los Angeles to pursue a fashion career.
“And when I got there, I realized that I loved the art of it,” she says. “I did not love the industry.”
She started taking classes at a community college to pass the time and joined the speech and debate team. That’s where she discovered speech pathology. The medical field didn’t seem too foreign — her mom is a nurse.
Newman graduated with a bachelor of speech-language pathology at California State University at Northridge before completing a graduate program at George Washington University in Virginia (magna cum laude at both) before moving to
Seattle for her fellowship.
Each home was furnished with secondhand goods. With each cross country move, everything would be sold. Then Newman and her husband Kevin would start the cycle again.
In 2018, it was time to put down roots. They moved to Dallas, since Kevin’s family was from the metroplex.
Newman worked at UT Southwestern Medical Center for three years practicing medical speech-language pathology, evaluating and treating communication and swallowing disorders, before accepting a job as a Dallas Opera chief Covid-19 compliance officer. She is currently the opera’s occupational health coordinator — Newman also has a second masters in health care administration from Texas Tech University.

Art and furniture on the first floor is more vibrant then the moodier, calmer upstairs.
V“As doors open, I tend to walk through them,” she says.
During the last six years, the Newmans bought and sold a condo in Lower Greenville, had a son and bought a forever home in the Lakewood Conservation District. They’ve fully embraced Texas — their toddler’s room has Katie Kime Dallas Toile wallpaper featuring Big Tex and Reunion Tower.
“To imagine us living somewhere forever, considering we’ve moved across the country every two years, has been pretty radical,” she says.
Once you’ve committed, you start curating a permanent collection. About 80% of the Newmans’s home is secondhand. Her husband prefers a more modern minimalist look and she favors more vintage maximalist. So for every vintage piece, there’s a more modern piece as a complement to both their styles.
“Because I think when pieces have a storied history, it makes for a far more interesting space,” Newman says. “That does mean that it takes longer to furnish a home because you’re constantly searching for that perfect piece. But the payoff is totally worth it.”
Thrift stores, online auctions, estate sales and Facebook Marketplace are some of places she finds her finds. Once, she bought a batch of 40 paintings in an online auction for $400 and drove down to Collinsville to pick them up. In the mix, there was an original piece by Texas artist Otis Huban, whose work sells for upwards of $10,000. She submitted an appraisal request from Sotheby’s.
“I don’t intend to sell it. I’m going to keep it forever,” she says. “But let me be clear that I don’t believe in conflating value and worth. I think things can be really valuable even if they’re technically not worth anything.”
About two years ago, she started documenting her secondhand adventures on TikTok as @sarathriftsintexas. She amassed a little less than 11,000 followers and is part of the Creator Fund, taking them on monthly day trips

to towns like Sherman to explore Dallas shops. Newman has over 100 locations bookmarked on Google Maps.
“What I really wanted to do is help other people understand why secondhand living is a very accessible lifestyle, that it’s affordable and sustainable,” she says.
“But also just an incredibly interesting way to experience history.”
So, how does the Dallas Opera’s occupational health coordinator and a TikTok influencer spend her day?
Well some days, she starts her morning working for the opera. Then she films a video series about how to curate secondhand pieces for spaces. There’s a stop at an estate sale and a stop for ice cream at TCBY with her son. An episode or two of Cocomelon before dress rehearsal for Romeo and Juliet from 5 p.m. - 11 p.m.
“It’s a great lifestyle,” she says. Her community both virtually and in real life has grown. She met her best friend in Dallas buying a coffee table on Facebook Marketplace, who shared a similar love of estate sales. Their kids are about the same age and seemed like they would be a great option for a playdate. Turns out, her new friend was already following her on TikTok.
Most, if not all, of Newman’s wardrobe is secondhand. One of her viral videos shows her finding a pair of Prada boots. She doesn’t have racks and racks of clothes like some secondhand shoppers, and she prefers contemporary clothes over a vintage look. But she does have a garage full of home furnishings, partly because of leftover items from her now-closed booth at East Dallas Vintage and partly because of her weekly trips.
Pieces that need major work, such as refurnishing, are passed on.
“So often, I come in contact with so many things,” she says. “I’m looking for things that are unique that I’ve never seen before, and may never see again, but also something that I can imagine having a place in my home.”

OUR NEIGHBORHOOD
By PATTI VINSON
The Wishing Tree
A Little Forest Hills destination
Funky Little Forest Hills is known for its wildly creative yard art — giant giraffe sculpture, Topo Chico bottle gate, bowling ball border. But stroll down Eustis Avenue and you'll find something a little different in Nickie and Tricia Molaire's yard: sacred spaces and pieces dedicated to honoring family ties and to connecting with a neighborhood they have grown to love.
The most eye-catching part of their yard is their newest addition which sits mere inches from the curb-free street: a Wishing Tree they installed in December 2023.
“I wanted to give folks a chance to rekindle hope and gratitude during the holidays,” Nicki explains.
They created the tree by hanging bamboo rods between two trees which stand a few feet apart, making lines on which passersby can hang personalized plastic tags. It's been so popular that the Molaires have decided to keep the tree up year round, changing only the colors of the tags and decorations according to the season. Thus far, it has reflected themes of December holidays, Mardi Gras and Spring.
A sign on the tree reads, “Please make a wish or word of gratitude and write it on the tag provided. Our intentions create great kindness and beauty. Something magical happens when we all wish in one place.”
The neighborhood - and perhaps those
just passing through - have embraced the tree. Several dozen wishes hang upon the branches - some bearing the scrawl of young children; some wish for things like a pony, a Squishmallow, a bike or a horse; some wish for family (“I wish I had a brother”). One impatient little one wrote, “I wish my birthday was tomorrow.” And one worried child hoped for “my dad to get better from all his surgeries.”
Many adults express a desire for peace, kindness and good health. One expressed yearning for an end to gun violence. One hoped for a new lover. And one adult sent out the wish to “believe in magic.”
The Molaire's neighbor, Sue Myers,

believes the Wishing Tree transcends individual messages.
“It offers hope that we can express ourselves without condemnation, that we can hear each other and realize we have more in common than what divides us,” she says.
Clea Verven is a neighbor who often strolls the area and offers appreciation. “For our family, the Wishing Tree is a destination point on our walks. It's a communal repository for good energy.”
As the tree fills up, the Molaires plan to make room for more wishes by placing wishes in a box and burying them as a “hope capsule.”
“Sacred is what these wishes are,” says Nickie. “And we must honor and respect them.”
Next to the Wishing Tree sits the Molaire's free library. It's a nod to both Tricia's family and Nickie's love of books and community. The library is constructed from material from Tricia's family, longtime ranchers with properties in Texas.
“The siding came from my grandmother's farm, O’Daniel farmhouse in Howard County, south of Coahoma. The roof was on my dad’s grandfather’s pigpen at our ranch in Crane County,” says Tricia.
The Molaires chose to use these pieces of family history deliberately: “Sacred materials make sacred memories,” explains Nickie.
The library is a project near and dear to Nickie. Growing up in New Iberia, Louisiana, where the summers were hot and the family budget limited, she says she spent a lot of her time at the air-conditioned library.
“I realized every book I read I could ride along with the characters and live a whole new life,” she says. “My household was chaotic and reading was something that only belonged to me.”
She understands the power of reading.
“I want all walks and ages to have access to books,” she says. “When I see someone browsing my library, I'm giddy. It means I'm making a connection.”
Near the Wishing Tree and the free library is an antique bistro table, a place to take a load off and browse a book or write a tag of gratitude. While sitting

there, visitors can't help but notice the yard art in front of the Molaire's cozy yellow house.
Take it all in. Wind spinners, a peacock, pelican, flamingo. And lots of butterflies. It all belonged to Tricia's mom, who died from COVID in 2021.
She was a Master Gardener who lived in West Texas and met the challenge of adding color to her yard. “West Texas is better known for sunsets and tumbleweeds,” explains Tricia. “She was resourceful with her yard and surroundings, not only did she have lush ponds with goldfish, she had greenhouses and hydroponic plants. And her favorite art was yard art.”
Tricia's favorite piece is the large orange butterfly on the front fence, a deeply meaningful reminder. “At my mom's outdoor celebration of life, 100 monarchs were released to greet her.”
“Having her art here is having her here,” she continues. “Every day we remember what all these items meant to her and know we preserve her memory daily. She could see through the West Texas dust and find and create color and life beyond the dusty wind.”
East Dallas is known for its good energy, and those wandering by the Molaire home will likely feel the sacred vibe of connection while pondering wishes, books and butterflies. “In these days of unrest,” Nickie reminds us. “We need moments of solace and hope.” PATTI VINSON is a guest writer who has lived in East Dallas for more than 20 years. She’s written for the Advocate and Real Simple magazine.
