Through performances at Sundown at Granada, Janna Wilson is using her story to guide others toward good

The Love Mic is held Monday nights at Sundown at Granada. Janna Wilson hosts and curates the lineup each week.

Nobody should’ve gotten hurt. It was supposed to be a clean deal.

Janna Wilson was in her early 20s, selling drugs for a living in what she calls “her first job.” One night, she drove with her friend to purchase 10 pounds of marijuana from a supplier. When he left the car to make the deal, Wilson heard gunshots.

“He (came) running back with his shirt ripped and told me he got jacked for the money,” she says.

The two took off.

Days later, members of a gang associated with the drug deal gone bad showed up at Wilson’s door demanding $10,000 of stolen cash. She had no idea what they were talking about.

“They came in with a gun and tied me up. I had a roommate at the time and they tied them up too,” Wilson says. “They pistol-whipped me thinking that I would just confess that I took the money they thought I took.”

Confused and beaten, Wilson offered to try and pay them back in debt just to get out of the situation.

“I was like, ‘If y’all just give me a minute I’ll give you all the money. Let me make the money back and you will get your ten grand, I’m good for it,’” she says.

Hoping to sort through the confusion, Wilson called the friend who had ridden with her days prior and asked him to come to her apartment. When he arrived with another associate in tow, they were pistol-whipped, too.

The scene was becoming desperate. Wilson knew nothing about a stolen $10k, and trusted that her roommate and friend didn’t know anything either.

“They already checked my entire house, it’s trashed. It’s not in my house. So I gave them an idea,” she says. “Why not go check his house?”

The friend had recently asked Wilson to cosign on an apartment, before saying her assistance would be unnecessary a few days later. When he gave the assailants his former apartment’s address, “it clicked,” and Wilson knew he was lying.

“We’re all getting lined up, they were about to kill us execution style on the bed,” she says. “His friend said, ‘Just tell them what happened.’ They went to his other address and recouped seven grand of the money.”

Even with some of the money found, the gang members set off back to Wilson’s apartment. They were intercepted by the police, who had been notified by neighbors of the suspicious activity taking place.

The police had potentially saved her life, but their arrival also meant the downfall of Wilson’s

operation. Everyone in her immediate circle got arrested on drug crimes. Somehow, she was able to slip through the cracks as each offense was pinned on someone else.

“I’m the only person out of every single person I know that didn’t get busted,” she says.

That was Janna Wilson over 20 years ago. In 2024, she lives a reformed, modest life as a McAfee salesperson.

She’s the little sister to three older brothers, and spent her formative years attending Lake Highlands High School. Each night, she returned home to a single mom and a revolving door of new men in the house. Wilson recalls being threatened and molested by some of them, leading to some of the dangerous decisions she made when she got older.

“Trauma is the gateway drug,” she says. “People don’t just go and start trying things because they were loved at home.”

Now 49, she wants to use her story to ensure others don’t follow the same path.

“I want my life to be a testimony as to why and how not to do. Make good choices. Don’t isolate,” she says.

Finding an avenue to share her story took some time.

In 2021, Wilson signed up for a stand-up comedy open mic at Chocolate Secrets, a chocolate and wine bar in Oak Lawn. She realized how quickly a community could be formed around it, and transitioned from performer to full-time host and curator of the shows.

She named her shows “The Love Mic,” dubbing it a “mental health open mic.”

“I call it The Love Mic because we’re born of love until life happens. My goal is to bring love back into the community and not isolate,” she says. “One of the main things that is highly suggested in therapy is to find a support group. Be bold, get on a stage, feel supported and have somewhere to go on a weekly basis.”

Wilson incorporates a wide cast of regulars, ranging from stand-up comedians, musicians, magicians and even a puppeteer in the weekly rotation. After two years at Chocolate Secrets, she took The Love Mic to Sundown at Granada.

“I have one Hispanic guy that calls me tía, I have somebody else that calls me auntie. Somebody wished me Happy Mother’s Day on Mother’s Day. It’s beautiful,” Wilson says.

The Love Mic recently celebrated its 10th show at Sundown, with Wilson only planning to grow from here. Tickets are $8, available weekly via Eventbrite.

“If I can just affect one person, I’m doing my part,” Wilson says. “It’s my purpose.”

THE TEENS BEHIND KICKOFF SPORTS

A local nonprofit aims to give children an equal opportunity

FOR SIX YEARS STARTING IN THE SUMMER OF 2012, FIVE 6-YEAR-OLD CHILDREN SPENT EVERY DAY OF THEIR SUMMER HELPING OTHERS THROUGH WITH AN ORGANIZATION CALLED COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS, HELD BY LAKEHILL PREPARATORY SCHOOL.

Each day was different. Some days, they would help people take groceries to their car or clean up White Rock Lake, and other days they would donate food to Meals on Wheels.

The five friends, Max Jensen, Will Maya, Zach Strong, Cal Lewis and Zach Lewis loved every bit of it for a few reasons. They got to spend their summer break together, they were able to meet new people and make more friends, every day was different and they could help people around the neighborhood while having a good time.

When they turned 12, they aged out of the organization. And by high school, it was time to go their separate ways.

Strong and the Lewis twins went to Woodrow Wilson, Maya went to Bishop Lynch and Jensen attended Richardson High School.

Determined to maintain the closeness of their quintet, they brainstormed ways to stay connected while incorporating what originally brought them together: sports and community service.

They decided on was to start a nonprofit called Kickoff Sports Dallas, inspired by their

experiences at Community Connections and their passion for playing sports together.

“We wanted to continue [community service] so we kind of went our own way with making our own charity with something we all love, which is sports,” Strong says. “We thought, ‘There’s not a lot of opportunities for underprivileged families to get [the] same equipment [and] the same camps we did.’”

Kickoff Sports Dallas aims to provide children with sports equipment, jerseys, shoes, connections and community support. The nonprofit also offers basketball lessons through camps and clinics.

Strong, a soccer player, serves as the treasure. Maya, who plays both football and baseball, is the communications coordinator. Jensen, basketball player and event coordinator, helps organize biweekly basketball camps and donation drives for KSD. Zach Lewis, baseball player and social media coordinator, handles their Facebook, Instagram and website. And Cal Lewis, who formerly played baseball and participates in theater, serves as president, coordinating outreach with potential partner organizations.

They brainstormed how to bridge the gap of disparities found in each sport like a lack of athletic equipment, less training and practice due to financial barriers.

“When we were coming out with the idea, we’d notice that when trying [out] for teams in middle school and high school there were students [who] weren’t as fortunate and didn’t have the experience on actual teams because it’s expensive,” Jensen says. “[We’re] just trying to level the playing field for students that are less fortunate.”

Knowing the sport was one

thing, but understanding how to run a nonprofit was a new challenge, Strong says.

They started with the fundamentals, filing for nonprofit status and pitching their organization to potential investors

— their parents — who each contributed $100 to help cover startup costs.

Once they received their nonprofit status, the teens began putting flyers around the neighborhood and spreading the word about their organization

through Facebook and Instagram.

Children and their families slowly began to trickle in with interest, but they were determined to reach more people.

It started small, with a sports

equipment drive in the neighborhood and giveaways at Northwest Community Center community outreach events.

In four years, the team had collaborated with over 20 nonprofit organizations for sponsorship, hosted

40 sports camps, donating more than 5,000 balls and raising thousands of dollars.

The organization was growing, and it was hard to keep up, Strong says.

“I did not think it would last this long, to be honest, because it was harder back then,” Jensen says. “I think it’s gotten easier with our connections but it was kind of hard getting started because we didn’t know what to do, we just collected everything and just had to reach out to a bunch of people,”

The group shares that they wouldn’t be where they are today without the help of Kiwanis Club for funding, Northwest Community Center for hosting their original basketball camp in 2023 and Owenwood for helping them finalize a location for basketball camps last summer. Mentorship from Megan Carlton, a teacher in Garland ISD, helped guide the group on how to run their nonprofit since 2021.

“I gained a lot of perspective on these kids’ lives,” Zach Lewis says. “It helps [to] shed light on what these kids are dealing with everyday.”

As the five high school seniors near graduation, the team prepares for their next challenge: keeping KSD alive while in college.

Zach Lewis is pursuing a business major at University of Arkansas. Cal Lewis is attending Rhodes College for environmental science. Maya is studying biology at Ole Miss, Jensen is attending Colorado School of Mines for engineering and Strong is pursuing biomedical engineering at Arizona State University.

They haven’t decided what’s next for KSD — whether it’s handing it off to another set of incoming freshmen or working on the nonprofit during holiday breaks.

One thing remains certain. KSD isn’t going anywhere.

That’s so East Dallas

Birdie’s Eastside pays homage to all things East Dallas, as intended, offering a nostalgic look at the grooviness of our neighborhood. It’s a vintage feel that longtime residents can resonate with.

Woodrow Wilson football flags and photos, old kayaks from White Rock Lake, cowboy hats and classic country records accessorize the 20,000-square foot restaurant.

Four summers ago, the now Birdie’s Eastside at 6221 E. Mockingbird Lane was home to Luby’s, a Houston-based cafeteria chain that closed its last remaining store during the pandemic.

When news struck the neighborhood, an overflow of Facebook posts and comments shared mournful messages, opposition and memories began to surface.

“Well there goes the neighborhood,” one resident said. “Sad news for sure.”

Another commented: “What is happening to our cafeterias?”

That same year, while people were stocking up on sanitizer and toilet paper, restaurateur Jon Alexis, who owns TJ’s Seafood and Malibu Poke, was in search of Dallas real estate suitable for a new restaurant, one that mimicked the same tune as TJ’s Seafood.

Having no luck visiting other sites in Lakewood, Alexis was driving back and passed the old Luby’s when the real estate broker asked if he wanted to take a look. “Yeah, let’s just look,” Alexis recalls saying.

“I walked away from that with a vision of Birdie’s Eastside; from day one, it seemed so clear what East Dallas could have here,” he says. “We saw this big empty Luby’s with the potential to build a 7,000-square-foot patio and we said, ‘How does something like this not exist in East Dallas?’”

The Luby’s property was formerly owned by the St. Thomas Aquinas Lower School where pre-kindergartners through second-graders attend.

Before transitioning to Birdie’s Eastside, City of Dallas ordinances prohibited serving alcohol within 300 feet of a school, thus spurring resident controversy along St. Moritz Avenue, the street bordering the northern property line of the site, according to previous Advocate reporting.

John Libone, head pastor of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Parish and School, wrote a letter supporting the request to grant the variance permitting the sale of alcohol within the 300-foot distance from their Lower School.

Despite mixed reviews, the city council approved an exception and a TABC permit.

A bird garnish pick is placed onto an old fashioned cocktail, a nod to the restaurant’s name. Shareable items include three spicy tuna wonton tacos, a twist from the menu’s American-style dishes. Additional signature drinks include the frozen espresso martini.

The long-awaited project was an instant success. And four months later, Birdie’s Eastside continues to have large crowds flocking to their doors promptly at 11 a.m.

The restaurant menu consists of diverse offerings. Birdie’s Eastside culinary vision is brought together by chef Stan Rodrigues whose dishes can be found around Dallas.

So how do you choose what to eat with over 30 dishes calling your name?

Short answer, you can’t, but here’s Alexis’s tips to navigate the menu.

If it’s game day, fans can pick from their game day staples including birdie wings, brisket queso or loaded fries.

If it’s date night, entrees like shrimp and grits, Italian sausage penne and flat iron steak can easily be paired with a glass of wine or martini for “fine dining.”

If you’re looking for healthier options, green plates like Mediterranean salad and vegan harvest bowls have you covered.

And if it’s none of the above, hearty meals like the patty melts, smash burger, brisket tacos and Tikka fried chicken might entice.

“We say Birdie’s Eastside is for everyone, and the menu is a function of that,” Alexis says. “It’s not like we sat down and said, ‘What’s the perfect menu?’ But we sat down and said, ‘How do we make a bunch of people happy?’ And putting all these puzzle pieces together became the Birdie’s Eastside menu.”

The restaurant specializes in playful cocktails. From a pickle martini, a classic Aperol spritz, a pomegranate gin & tonic, a jalapeno cucumber margarita or a frozen espresso martini, the list goes on.

“We have a fun drink menu for lots of people,” Alexis says. “When you’re going to a patio restaurant in Texas, you’ve got to have a fun selection.”

But of course, what’s a neighborhood bar and restaurant without local draft beers like the Lakewood pony pilsner

and the Lakewood lager?

“If you want something to feel personal to guests, it needs to be personal [to you],” he says.

While attending Southern Methodist University for a degree in political science, Alexis resided in East Dallas (because it was more his vibe) and regularly visited the classics like Cosmo’s off Skillman Street for drinks, The Goat for karaoke, the M Streets and White Rock, all of which have “a million gazillion percent” contributed to the ambiance of the restaurant.

“I have always felt a connection with East Dallas; I have spent some of my favorite decades of my life in East Dallas,” Alexis says. “I feel like I knew what Birdie’s Eastside was supposed to be because I know East Dallas.”

As Alexis’ love letter to East Dallas, this restaurant is for everyone.

CARLEY SEALE’S EAST DALLAS FOOTPRINT

Shaping the local retail scene for East Dallas

Carley Seale shares her store’s brand is based on two things: joy and kindness. A company mission that was dedicated to honor her mother.

Carley Seale is a lover of two things: retail and people.

Seventeen years ago, owner Carley Seale made the leap and opened a women’s boutique, a dream she’d longed for since childhood.

“It was just a little girl dream to be honest. When I was 15, I got my first job in a fine jewelry store in Tyler, TX, where I grew up … I worked retail even before I could drive [and] and through college,” she says.

At a young age, she became fascinated with retail as it “held endless opportunities.” Seale, who can be restless at times, fell for the constant hustle and bustle of owning a store.

“The success of a shop isn’t a recipe that can be followed, a store is the sum of a million moving parts,” she says.

Seale, who attended Oklahoma University for a bachelor’s degree in accounting, landed her first “real job” at an accounting firm in Dallas. After one year of working at the firm, she decided it wasn’t for her, but the city was.

So she switched to medical sales. For 10 years, it worked, but Seale wasn’t entirely satisfied.

During her time as a sales rep, she constantly traveled, experiencing all sorts of cultures and retail with her friends around the country. Upon her return home, Seale noticed the women’s boutiques she’d come to love during her travels lacked a presence in East Dallas.

So, she had an idea: Why not open a women’s boutique in East Dallas?

The decision to open a small business was a drastic shift for Seale. She was starting her company in 2007, right on the precipice of the financial crisis of 2008. Despite the challenge, five stores later her boutiques continue to grow in business.

When opening her store in 2007, Seale had no guarantees it was going to work.

“When starting a business, you not only evaluate the opportunities, you hypothesize every worst case scenario,” she says. “When the possibility [of] failure is overshadowed by your dreams and a solid business plan, it’s time to get to work. Funny enough, those hypotheticals I defined as the ‘worst case scenario’ have actually happened multiple times [and] I’m still here.”

Her first store, Gypsy Wagon, later renamed Favor the Kind, operated on the corner of Bonita Avenue and Henderson Avenue in a space formerly occupied by a tattoo parlor.

Seale and her mother got to work, scrubbing the floors and painting the walls. They did everything they could to “make it cute” at least for their three-year lease.

While she envisioned her mother helping her navigate life as a new mom and business owner,

Seale’s mother died of pancreatic cancer two years after opening her first store and having her first child.

Seale’s mother was her inspiration to model her business after all her mother taught her: work hard, be extra kind to people and have fun.

In 2010, it was time to move to a new space off Henderson Avenue, still offering women’s apparel, accessories, children’s clothing and toys, home décor, shoes, stationary items and self care products.

And within the first few years of opening, it was clear what the establishment had become more than what she envisioned.

“We’ve been around 17 years, I’m seeing women that I sold baby clothes [and] their daughter’s [are now] graduating and then their mom is still coming in, it’s just been so intentional for that specific reason,” she says.

Seale decided it was time to expand Favor the Kind outside of Dallas, opening stores in Houston and Crested Butte, Colorado.

At all three Favor the Kind locations, customers new and old continue to fill the store each day. Some buy dresses for their daughters, gifts for a bridal party and new outfits for brunch with accessories to compliment them.

“I’m the type of person [that] the minute everything seems calm, I’m going to operate [on] something again. I can’t help it,” she says.

In 2015, Seale opened ROAM Fine Goods, offering global artisan-made home goods, gifts and jewelry in Colorado in addition to Favor the Kind. Not too long after, she opened a location in the Preston Royal Shopping Center and a third store in Lakewood in November 2023.

She relaxed for four months before making another business move.

In March, Favor the Kind lost the lease of its Henderson Avenue location. So they packed their belongings then headed to their new home at 3024 Greenville Ave.

The store will reopen in the former space of San Francisco Rose on May 1, featuring an updated look with expanded retail space and additional parking.

In addition, she is opening a second storefront at the end of the street called, Ernest John Honest Goods, inspired by the names of her two children and her uncle’s store in New York.

The Ernest John Honest Goods store will be similar to Rose Apothecary from Schitt’s Creek , she jokes, as it is a sustainable lifestyle and apothecary shop. A private label refillery, customers will be able to bring in their bath and body products for refills, which helps eliminate plastic waste.

Reflecting on the young girl who had a dream, she feels proud of the decisions she’s made, she says.

“I still made some costly mistakes [but] I learned how to lead and, in painful ways, how not to lead. I have almost lost it all twice, but I didn’t give up,” she says. “It’s a business, but I treat it like a garden that grows the fruits of kind culture, leadership and community. If I could talk to little Carley, I’d tell her that it is never going to be perfect, so don’t make that the goal. I’d tell her there is no such thing as a mistake, only lessons and lessons make you smart. I’d tell her joy is a commodity that can be sold in little gray bags with rainbow bows, you just have to believe.”

‘Tis the season for birding in East Dallas

Need to slow down your monkey mind? Calm your caveman stress hormones? Look up. Birds can be therapeutic to us earthbound creatures if we simply slow down and observe the bevy of birds among us every day, especially here in East Dallas.

White Rock Lake, of course, has an abundance of avian dinosaurs. It’s always worth the short jaunt over there to see pelicans, herons and egrets. But consider connecting with nature closer to home. To experience a bird break, step into your backyard, onto your balcony

or simply look out your window. Birds are everywhere.

Hillside neighbor Ben Sandifer is an enthusiastic birder. He earned the title of Master Birder after completing the extensive North Central Texas Master Birder program several years ago. Always a fan of the outdoors, birding has added an extra dimension to his outdoor experience. “Observing wild birds allows one to slow down, take in the sights and sounds around you. It can be a very mindful activity focusing on the present.”

Recent years have yielded a flurry of sci -

entific research about the benefits of having birds around. One study found that being near bird song can improve your sense of well-being. Other studies determined that slowing down and observing birds can lower blood pressure, reduce stress and anxiety, and sharpen concentration.

Fortunately, our neighborhood is popular with birds.

“Dallas sits within the North American Central Flyway (migration path) and will see hundreds of species documented by birders in a calendar year,” explains Sandifer. “Dallas is rich with birds and

the opportunity to see them.” The most common, year- round resident birds are Northern cardinal, Carolina chickadee, Carolina wren, blue jay, mourning dove, white-winged dove and red-bellied woodpecker.

By the way, this is a great time to see birds. Spring migration will bring us visitors from all parts, including hummingbirds, yellow warblers from Central and South America, indigo buntings, and the crazy-colorful painted bunting. You might even see an American golden plover, one Sandifer memorably spotted once.

“The species has one of the longest migration routes of any bird on the planet. It migrates every spring from Southern Argentina to the tundra of the Arctic Circle to nest,” he says.

If you’ve never done any bird watching, don’t be intimidated. Anyone can be a birder. “One of the great things about birding,” says Sandifer, “is that it’s accessible to people of all ages and levels of fitness.” Birding can be as simple or as involved as you wish. Though no equipment is necessary, a field guide and a pair of binoculars can make it a more satisfying venture.

“I always recommend an 8x pair of binoculars for viewing birds. An inexpensive pair of binoculars will add immense enjoyment in viewing and identifying birds.”

You’ll likely be amazed how many tools you can find to help learn about and identify birds. Check out allaboutbirds.org, owned by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Cornell also produces eBird.org and the eBird app, tools for location/sighting information and for creating bird lists.

Another amazingly useful tool is the Merlin app. “It has immersive technology using your cell phone microphone,” explains Sandifer. “When used as a listening device, the app and your cell phone microphone can detect the species name of a bird with decent accuracy. Novice birders find Merlin as an excellent resource for identifying birds.”

If you want to see a bigger variety of birds, invite them: set up feeding and watering stations at your home. “Establishing a consistent food and

water source will attract birds to your backyard or patio year round. During extremely cold or hot weather, human-placed feeders and water supplies can provide a vital resource to wild birds,” says Sandifer, whose own yard has several feeders. “It’s an inexpensive and passive way to enjoy the great outdoors a stone’s throw from your door.”

Year-round bird residents of East Dallas will benefit, as will those just passing through during migration. Though many migratory birds seek out mostly insects, they’re sure to appreciate your feeders as a supplemental resource. Think of your yard as an Airbnb for birds, a welcome stop for a weary traveler.

A fun, relatively new tool is the camera bird feeder, which records up close and personal videos of your visitors and allows you to review footage at your leisure. You never miss a bird.

Remember that birds need a place to bathe and water to wash down the entrée you provide. “The number one resource that attracts birds to your yard,” Sandifer reminds us, “is a consistent and clean supply of water. It can be a concrete bird bath, a special drip feature or even a simple kitchen platter or shallow bowl. The key with water is to provide it as a consistent supply for birds that is clean and readily available.”

It’s also helpful to provide cover for them. “A shade tree, understory plants, bushes and a nearby secluded perch area can help bird species feel safe and offer shelter from predators. Cooper’s hawks are frequent ambush raptors of bird feeders in East Dallas. Having a bit of cover nearby offers birds a better chance of having a meal versus becoming one.”

As you provide food and shelter for the birds and begin to identify the species who visit your home, you may find you’ve forged a bond with them: regulars to your feeders begin to feel like friends. Slow down, breathe deeply, and enjoy this symbiotic relationship.
