L. G. MOSLEY
March 2, 1941- OCTOBER 22, 2024
Oak Cliff Resident
Lonnie George Mosley, better known as L.G., was born the youngest of five children to James Esther Mosley Freeman and Everett Mosley on March 2, 1941, in Dallas, Texas. He passed into his eternal rest on October 22, 2024.
Wed to Jynnifer Needham Mosley at the tender age of 16, L.G. enjoyed a marriage of 66 years. He became the father of Tammy Mosley Hollingsworth, Lonnie Carl Mosley, Shelley Mosley Stanzel and Marshall Scott Mosley, as well as father-in-law to Billy Joe Hollingsworth, Jr., Richard Cary Stanzel, and Christine Morrison Mosley. He was the grandfather of 10; Joey & Cassie, Kristi & Wade, Dusti & Will, Chase & Emily, Chappell, Lauren & Thomas, Meagan & Robert, Lacy & Issac, Matty & Walker, and Libby. Great-grandfather of 18; Ashtyn & Ben, Gracie Faith, Kaden, Gracie Marie, Hunter, Emma, Addy, Reeve, Preston, Joe, Brynlee, Landon, Eli, Ava, Josie J, Leona, Weaver, Monty, and a great-greatgrandfather of 2; Wescott and Reed.
L.G. was preceded in death by his mother, James Esther Mosley Freeman, Everett Mosley and sisters, Dorsey Jean Mosley and Rayanne Mosley Burrows. He is survived by his sister, Maureen Mosley Carter, and brother, James Lloyd “Lucky” Mosley.
L.G. had an innate understanding of the nuances of human nature, a rare gift he utilized throughout both his familial and
Blessed with an optimistic, colorful personality and an infectious charisma, L.G. was a true Horatio Alger. He was a promoter who could make anything sound exciting and possible - and unlike many, he could actually turn his ideas into reality.
Born into abject poverty with no father in his life, L.G. became the epitome of the American entrepreneur who did business on a handshake and whose word was his bond. He was dependable, reliable and always did what he said that he would do; he never
Armed with only an 8th grade education, L.G. started numerous successful businesses in a variety of fields. Ranging from his roofing company that he started at the age of twelve to negotiating oil deals in Europe, he was involved in roofing, land development, home building, oil, racehorses, real estate speculation, banks, an insurance company, car lots, and pawnshops, just to name a few.
He loved horses from an early age and was well-known nationally for the champion racehorses that he bred and raced.
But, most importantly, L.G. loved his family with a deep depth of gratitude and wanted to give his children the kind of father that he never had and his wife a husband of whom she could be proud. He will be interred in Carlton, Texas. May he rest in peace and be blessed by residing in the presence of Our Lord Jesus Christ for eternity.
A Celebration of LG’s Life was Saturday, October 26, 2024 at Byrum Funeral Home Chapel with a Sunset graveside service that followed at Hollingsworth~Mosley Family Cemetery in Carlton, TX. Memorial details at byrumfuneralhome.com

TACKLING ADVERSITY
Buddy Johnson is living out his dream as a Dallas Cowboy & giving back to the community
Story by JILLIAN NACHTIGAL
When Buddy Johnson made a game-winning play for his college in 2020, he knew he had a chance to make it to the league. Now, he’s living out his dream and doing good for the community he came from.
Johnson’s career began in Oak Cliff, where he played Pop Warner football, following in his family’s footsteps. When he got to middle school, he started to take things more seriously. Originally slated to attend Carter High School, he ended up attending Kimball, their rival.
While playing at Kimball, the college offers began rolling in: Southern Methodist University, Missouri State University, Texas Tech University. A visit to Texas A&M University sealed the deal for Johnson.
“I honestly just fell in love with the place on my first visit,” Johnson says. “I committed on the way home, and it’s just been [smooth] sailing ever since.”
From the beginning of his professional career, Johnson knew he was in control of his own destiny.
“The coach that recruited me told me and my mom, ‘If you’re not starting, running down on kickoff first play of the game, then it’s your fault,’” Johnson says. “And the first play of the game, [against] UCLA, I’m running down on kickoff.”
As his first two seasons flew by, other players went on to the NFL, eventually putting Johnson in a leadership position. He says this is where he really started to mature and grow as a player, because he knew his team needed him.
“In my third year, as that season went on, I started to see myself making more plays and getting more comfortable,” Johnson says. “People started asking if I was coming back for my fourth year
or declaring for the draft. If it’s a question that I can leave and go to the draft, like this is something that I can really, really do. So my confidence level got really high.”
He decided to return for his final year, and had a phenomenal season in 2020.
into the next season’s training camp, and he ended up not making the Steelers team.
“I remember a game that I will never forget – we were playing Florida. I think they were top 10 in the country, and I’m not sure if we were ranked or not. They came to our field, and I remember the last drive, I remember it being a tie ballgame. They’re driving down, they’re about to score,” Johnson says. “I end up punching the ball out. We get a fumble, we go down, kick the field goal to win. And at that moment, I’m like, bro, this is something I can actually do.”
Johnson declared for the draft at the conclusion of the season, and was drafted in the fourth round by the Pittsburgh Steelers.
From there, his journey was a roller coaster.
“This was actually my first time being away from Texas, because I grew up in Dallas, I go to College Station, which is still in Texas, and play ball there,” Johnson says. “I’m going to go play in Pennsylvania, like I’m out here in Pittsburgh. So it was a little rough going for me.”
When he got to Pittsburgh, he suffered a condition – plantar fasciitis – which put him on the injured reserve list. The nagging injury bothered him
A stint with the 49ers was a learning experience for Johnson, who got to look up to top players such as linebacker Fred Warner. He ended up getting cut from the Niners and signed to the Texans.
He was assigned to the practice squad in Houston and was never elevated to a game roster.
“I was still trying to get better every day, be a good teammate and give a good look,” Johnson says. “I kept building who I am as a player and a person.”
He decided not to re-sign with the Texans due to his lingering injury, and took a chance on himself, opting to get surgery on his foot and rehab back home in Dallas.
He later flew out to Chicago for a workout and was plagued by yet another injury, this time on his hamstring.
“At this point, I’m like, man, I’m getting injury after injury, but obviously I’m trying to continue to have hope, because I know there’s going to be adversity in life, but at this point in my life it’s really tough,” Johnson says. “So I’m like OK, I’m gonna just rehab and I’m gonna keep training. So if another team calls me, then I’ll be ready.”
When he became healthy again, the Dallas Cowboys called. They wanted him to come by for a workout.
“I wanted to tell my family, but I’m like, I can’t get their hopes up like that just for me not to sign,” Johnson says. “I told my uncle, because I had to tell somebody, it’s like, how do you not tell somebody? I remember telling my uncle, and I was like, ‘you can’t tell my mom. Like, whatever you do, you can’t tell my mom.’”
After performing well at the workout, he eventually signed with his hometown team.
“I finally tell my mom, tell my brothers. My mom, she’s just tears rolling down her face, you know, she grew up a Cowboys fan,” Johnson says. “I tell my granny, I tell my brothers, they’re all fired up about it. And pretty much from there, everything just started to fall in place for me. I signed to the practice squad, and I ended up getting elevated for four games. So at this time of my career, I’m starting to build back up my confidence.”
This season, Johnson ended up making the 53-man Cowboys roster.
“I’m just super blessed to have this opportunity, not only to be in the NFL, but to play for my hometown team,” Johnson says. “It makes it a lot easier when you play for the hometown team to be able to give back to my community.”
Johnson started the Everybody Needs a Buddy Foundation, whose mission is to provide essential mentorship and guidance to the youth. He held his first annual football camp at Kimball last summer, which featured 200 first to sixth-graders learning fundamental football drills and skills.
“I think it’s important because, growing up, there wasn’t a lot of guys around that was in the league that would come back from my high school,” Johnson says. “For me to go back, it gives the guys a lot of confidence, and, you know, it gives the guys hope. Like, OK, this guy is a guy that’s where I’m from. He grew up in a neighborhood that’s tough to make it out of, and he still made it, through all the adversity.”
THE BREAD DESTINATION
OakCliffhasadelectablehistorywith bread,includingthecreationofthe
Oak Cliff is the bread destination of Dallas – and it always has been.
In the days of bread delivery service, Oak Cliff was a prominent dispatcher of gluten-carrying bread men. While East Dallas had the infamous Mrs. Baird’s factory, on the south side was Golman-Oak Cliff Baking Co., founded by Jake Golman in 1930.
In 1928, The Oak Cliff Dallas Commercial Association, now the Chamber of Commerce, sought to bring the burgeoning bread business to the neighborhood. Golman was the first to break ground on a 15,000 square foot factory. It still stands today on the corner of Marsalis Avenue and 8th Street.
What used to be a flour-filled factory is now an auto-body shop. But for years the company was a staple of the growing community, running six fleets and employing 45 workers.
“I remember I went on a field trip to Golman and the same loaf of bread was coming down the belt,” says W. K. Jeffus, a local Oak Cliff resident and renowned Dallas historian.
“They put four different labels on the same loaf.”
Golman’s delivery routes kept the bread in-house, but the factory’s impact on bread reached national heights.
Texas Toast, the glorious thick-cut white bread smothered with butter, has plenty of origin stories, most of them from DFW. But Golman’s was the first to commercialize the bread.
Golman’s was the bread provider of Dunston’s Steakhouse. Gene Dunston, the latest claimant to the origin stories of Texas Toast, ordered Golman’s bread in mass – unsliced. When Golman discovered Dunston was slicing and grilling the bread himself,
Golman created a new machine that created the thicker slices required for the savory treat.
The factory closed sometime after the sale of Golman’s and baked goods petered in and out of Oak Cliff. Lone Star Donuts is one of the enduring characters, while Schindler’s Bakery on Davis is a relic of the past.
There are more bakeries and boulangeries in Oak Cliff than ever before. The pastry chefs of today continue the legacy that started with the Golman family in the ‘30s.
Every bite of your favorite bread from the south side of Dallas is a bite of history.
BAKERIES IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD TODAY PUT OAK CLIFF BACK ON THE MAP AS A DELECTABLE DESTINATION FOR CARB CRAVERS:
Oak Cliff Bread Co , the neighborhood’s must-try bakery started with humble beginnings. So humble, in fact, that the founders were dealing bread out of their home kitchen. A brickand-mortar shop has opened at Tyler Station and sells out regularly.
Kuluntu Bakery is taking an alternative approach to the baking scene. The nonprofit and James Beard finalist offers a rotating menu of pre-order-only baked goods. Kuluntu hopes to open a storefront where they can spread their mission of radical inclusion and fight the battle against food inequity.
Stealing a page from Golman’s book is Candor Bread , a local bakery specializing in sourdough and available only in Davis Street Espresso or through front door delivery. Candor Bread is one of the few remaining bakeries in Dallas that delivers bread to your doorstep.

Holiday wonderland pop-up bar takes over Bishop Arts for fifth year
Story by JILLIAN NACHTIGAL | Photography by KATHY TRAN
If you are trying to make it on Santa’s nice list this year, Bishop Art’s naughtiest pop-up bar may diminish your chances. But if you like merry cocktails, flamboyant decor and a lineup of games and festivities all December long, this is the place for you.
Taking over the entirety of Bishop Lane this holiday season, Exxir Capital’s Tipsy Elf returned to town on Nov. 22 for its fifth year along with its themed drinks, festive vibes and holiday mischief. Larry, the OG Tipsy Elf, will of course be in attendance in the naughtiest fashion, and this event turns 21+ after 9 p.m.
“The goal was to bring the magic and nostalgia of Christmas to life, but with a playful, kind of debaucherous over-thetop twist,” says Sierra Tuthill, Exxir director of marketing.
This year’s map highlights locations such as Santa’s Twerkshop and Tipsy Town as the event spans across Bishop Lane and can be accessed through the alley between Marcel and Go Easy.
Tuthill says the team brainstorms ideas all year long and begins to plan everything out about six months in advance.
The bar inside of Casablanca — which recently underwent renovations to accommodate more guests — offers “Lux” cocktails and Tejas’ outdoor bar has been refitted as the Tipsy Tex Saloon. Each bar offers its own signature drinks and plenty of Instagram-worthy backgrounds.
An addition this year is a holiday showdown stage in the middle of Casablanca for more community karaoke. This year also dives more into the storyline of Larry the Elf, which Exxir Creative Director LeRoy Poignant says is the focal point of the event.
“We may or may not have a statue of him for the town square,” Poignant says. “We kind of dug a little bit further into getting some custom things done for Larry. This year will be exciting in that sense.”
Last year, Tuthill said 25,000 people came to the event.
“This started as a little cozy holiday pop-up out of that little white house next to Paradiso, where Village Baking is currently running their business out of, and then it just gets growing and growing,” Tuthill says. “And now it takes over the entire Bishop Lane area, and multi -
ple venues like Casablanca. The larger common areas outside have just grown exponentially.”
Last year, the event was extended through New Year’s.
The goal? To make Tipsy Elf the most memorable holiday destination.
“Not only is it decked out with the most lights and fun and holiday decor, but we also want it to be a larger winter wonderland experience where you’re not expecting what’s to come,” Tuthill says. “We have our surprises each night — we’ve had the twerking Grinches, the daddy Santas — you just never know what you’re gonna get.”
Tuthill says should they see the same numbers, the holiday party might just stick around into 2025.
“I always compare it to Hallmark,” Poignant says. “Tipsy Elf doesn’t fit into Hallmark, but Bishop Arts fits into Hallmark. So I feel like we’re bridging that gap and giving someone a destination, but I also want them to go down the street and experience the rest of Bishop. Getting people down here and seeing what we have to offer is really exciting.”

BREWING COMMUNITY
B-Side Coffee is Elmwood’s cozy coffee spot
Story by JILLIAN NACHTIGAL |
Photography by LAUREN ALLEN
Nestled in the heart of Oak Cliff’s Elmwood neighborhood, B-Side Coffee is a place for the community.
Located in the spot previously occupied by Peaberry Coffee and owned by Whitney and Caleb Marsh, B-Side strives to be a “third space” for neighbors.
“We’re really into sharing the space,” Whitney says. “It’s a great space, and we’ve worked really hard on it, it’s just for everyone in our community to utilize. We’ve always been really into welcoming people into our home. And this space is definitely a reflection of our home, and it looks just like our house and feels like our house. We’ve always been hosts, and so this allows us to do that every day.”
The space is accommodating for all, and even offers a play area for children.
“Our neighborhood is full of families, so we just wanted a place where you could get a cup of coffee and relax but the kids were entertained, and it’s been a huge hit. It’s cool to see people coexist too. It’s like people who are working from home that don’t have kids can come in here and work on one side or in here with kids who are playing in the play area. It’s pretty cool.”
B-Side is the only cafe in Dallas that offers Big Bend Coffee Roasters, a line of organic and fair trade coffee from Marfa, Texas. Along with a traditional coffee menu, B-Side offers a lineup of specialty lattes such as The Kennedy with sweet cream and whiskey flavoring and seasonal offerings.
“Coffee has notoriously been a little bit snobby in the past, and our whole thing is approachable craft coffee,” Whitney says. “We want really high-quality coffee, but if you’re used to drinking like
B-Side Coffee will offer seasonal drinks this holiday season and is decked out in cozy holiday decor this month.
a caramel frappuccino from Starbucks, like I got something. I’m not too good to serve you what you like, and I think that’s something that a lot of coffee shops miss — being approachable. We just want to be a place for literally anybody to come.”
The name of the shop pays homage to the roots of the building.
“This space right here was a recording studio for 40 years,” Whitney says. “When we bought the space, we were like, ‘I want to honor its history, but also revitalize it.’”
With a full-time pastry chef with experience at the Crescent Hotel and Petra and the Beast, B-Side is offering plenty of pastries and sandwiches such as pesto chicken or a massive chicken salad croissant.
The artwork lining the walls of the coffee shop is from local artists.
“I feel like we really do try to give back to the community in that sense, like show art and provide a space for people to show their craft,” Whitney says. “We just let them put their art up and we host a reception for them. So it’s been really good for the artists.”
Events, birthday parties, and even weddings have taken place in B-Side, and the Marsh’s have achieved their goal of becoming the cozy coffee shop destination in Dallas.
“Anytime we’ve traveled or anywhere we’ve lived — we’ve always been city people — we’ve always sought after, cool coffee spots,” Whitney says. “And so we knew what we wanted to create as far as that goes. It feels great. It feels like people love it here, and that feels really like a gift in itself.”
