IN JANUARY OF 1949, Neiman Marcus made plans to build its first branch store because the original downtown location was running out of room. The store was to be built in the Varsity Village shopping area on Preston Road south of Northwest Highway, facing Preston Center.

The store took three years to build, and it was aimed at suburban families. The design featured a Southwestern color palette with a glass mosaic, Kachina dolls, a glass-walled patio and a commissioned Alexander Calder mobile.

This location lasted until NorthPark Center opened in 1965, when Neiman’s decided to close the original branch and move. Search ‘Neiman Marcus’ at prestonhollow.advocatemag.com to read more.

Interview by RACHEL STONE | Photography by DANNY FULGENCIO
PROFILE
THESE ARE THE PEOPLE IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD SCREEN QUEEN Gail Cronauer’s out-of-this-world role 

It’s a movie as eerie as “The Twilight Zone” and charming as “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.”

“The Vast of Night,” a micro-budget film that premiered on Amazon this year and made the Slamdance Film Festival, marries notes of 1950s sci-fi camp with deceptively deep storytelling and intriguing characters. One of them is played by Dallas-based actress Gail Cronauer.

Cronauer moved to Dallas in 1979 to teach acting at Southern Methodist University and began acting with the bygone Stage One. She has appeared on nearly every stage in the Dallas area, and in 1987, she started getting roles in TV and film.

She played Ma Newton in the 1998 movie “The Newton Boys,” and she appeared in five episodes of the Dallas-filmed “Walker: Texas Ranger,” to name two of her many credits.

“The Vast of Night” is set in a small New Mexico town in the 1950s, but it was filmed in Whitney, Texas, in 2016. Oklahoma-based filmmaker Andrew Patterson, whose day job is producing TV commercials for clients including the Oklahoma City Thunder, financed the entire budget, which was less than $1 million. About $20,000 of that was spent to remove the three-point line in the basketball gym where the film opens. The film also uses vintage telephone switchboard, radio and recording equipment.

Cronauer plays an old woman who claims to have answers about a mysterious occurrence in town. She’s wearing a bad wig, and the glow of a TV lights her face. Her performance centers on a perfectly creepy monologue.

Cronauer recently retired from Collin County Community College, and she’s continuing to pursue her acting career.

Are you from Dallas?

No, I was born in Pennsylvania, grew up in New Jersey and slowly worked my way west to college, to grad school, to a series of jobs in Wisconsin and St. Louis and Illinois and finally wound up at SMU. My husband, who has since passed away, was in the graduate business program at SMU.

Did you always want to be an actor?

No. I sang, so I did musicals in high school. I was a good student, so I thought I’d have a career in science or medicine. I wanted to be a diplomat. It just didn’t work out.

How did you become an actor?

I got to college, and now we’re into Vietnam. I worked on a play, “Viet Rock,” by Megan Terry. And it was a play that was very critical of America’s involvement in the Vietnam War. That play is what galvanized it. I became increasingly involved in theater, and I was also dancing at the time. That was the path I continued to follow because it combined my interest in people and politics, and I guess, art also. So all those things came together to push me in that direction. There is a whole generation of actors who have done that play. It was an extraordinary experience.

Have you watched “The Vast of Night”?

Oh, yes. It premiered at Slamdance in January 2019, and I didn’t go. You never know what your appearance is going to be in the final cut of a film. I once went to a screening of a film that I was in, and when it got to my scene, the film ended. Sometimes that happens. But I finally went to the Overlook festival in New Orleans and saw the film last year.

What did you think?

I thought that it was spectacular. Each time that I watch it, I’m more impressed by the changes in rhythm in the film and some of the amazing shots. The performances. I’m so impressed by the filmmaking. Andrew and his creative team really took the time to get it right. I have tremendous respect for their commitment and tenacity.

What have you been up to lately?

I’ve been updating my website. My friend is a casting director in L.A. She said, “You need to get your materials together because there are going to be inquiries after this,” so I’m doing that. We’ll see what’s next. I cleaned out my office that had 24 years of stuff, which was very strange. I have a garden. My boyfriend and I put a fountain in. I’ve been spending a lot of time educating myself. Yale’s open university has courses about African American history, and I’m doing that.

You’re now retired from Collin County College and a member of its hall of fame. What did you enjoy about teaching?

I always found that my teaching informed my performance work, and my performance work informed my teaching. Most of my students have no intention of pursuing acting. I stay in touch with some of my students. One works as an ER nurse in New York, another is a helicopter EMT. And they were amazing students. A few have gone on to be very successful in the entertainment field.

A QUIET PLACE TO STUDY

THE ‘BOARDING EXPERIENCE’ COMING TO OAK CLIFF

THE FIRST “BOARDING EXPERIENCE” for Dallas ISD students whose homes lack the stability needed to reach higher achievements is expected to open in Oak Cliff this fall.

At Last! is under construction at 405 E. Overton Road, near South Oak Cliff High School, but it’s not a school. It’s intended to be a home away from home where boarders live Monday-Friday. They can attend any school, but an enrollment lottery will give preference to students who live in the neighborhood surrounding the dormitories.

The first 16 students, who could move in as early as next year, will be elementary age, and they could stay with the program through middle school. The plan is to eventually build three houses sleeping 16 boarders each.

“We are not curricular. We don’t seek to replicate what teachers and principals do,” says Randy Bowman, a DISD graduate and businessman who is the CEO of At Last! “We are more replicating what parents do when they come home from work and give their kids a snack and ask them how their day went and what homework they have.”

HOW AT LAST! WORKS:

The 16 scholars-in-residence will live at the house from about 3 p.m. Sunday until they leave for school Friday morning. Each house will have a dining area and great room similar to that of a middle-class home, with family-style meals at a dinner table, quiet places to study and tutoring as needed. There will be four bedroom suites, each with

a bathroom, that sleep four students. “Some kids don’t have the luxury of space, a quiet place to go and get your work done,” Bowman says. “It’s going to look like a well-resourced home where you can crawl onto a chair and do your work.” While kids are at school, their parents are invited to come and help tidy up the house and visit with the house parent. About 12 people are expected to be employed there during the first year.

unfold to get everyone ready for the next day. After homework is done, students have free time when they can socialize or call their parents and then go to bed at about 9 p.m.

GRANDPARENT WAKE-UP:

Bowman says the nonprofit plans to hire older adults who live in the neighborhood to arrive at 6 a.m. every morning to wake up the students and get them ready for the school day. “These would be fixed-income people who could work roughly 10 hours a week,” Bowman says. “We need you to wake these kids up in a way that leaves them feeling good about themselves and the day ahead. To leave them feeling like they’ve just gotten a warm embrace and can feel like proficient learners.”

EXTRACURRICULAR:

ADULTS IN THE HOUSE:

The house parent will live in an apartment within the residence and will be a counselor who does everything that parents do in that 3-8 p.m. window. The house parent leads the “culture” of the house, setting a tone for relationships and behavior, Bowman says. “It’s an incredibly important hire for us,” he says. The house parent helps students de-stress from the day, makes sure they have their snacks and takes them through a wellness assessment. They ask, “What do you need to get done?” and figure out how the evening should

The house parents will encourage students and make sure they have the resources to pursue their personal interests — from music, to language to coding.

HOW THE FIRST HOUSE IS DIFFERENT:

The 5,700-square-foot building currently under construction will cost about $1.54 million and could be completed as early as mid-October. It will also house the nonprofit’s office and conference room, as well as a nurse’s office, an industrial laundry room and a kitchen that will provide meals for all three residences. The cost also includes an expensive driveway and fire lane that won’t have to be replicated for the other houses.

“We are replicating what parents do when they come home from work and give their kids a snack and ask them how their day went.”

CONCERNS ABOUT CHILD ABUSE:

“We’re

In constructing the house, they’re adding surveillance cameras in all areas that are appropriate. Adults will not be allowed to be alone with children where there could be opportunities for abuse, he says. The nonprofit will run deep background checks that are more invasive than what licensing requires. They will also hire an outside agency to review internal processes.

WHAT IT COSTS:

The nonprofit’s 2020 operating budget was about $425,000. Bowman expects the budget for the 2020-2021 school year, from August to July, to be about $890,000. After that, it could cost about $675,000 a year.

HOW IT’S FUNDED:

The Hoblitzelle Foundation was the nonprofit’s first major donor with $100,000. They also received $75,000 from the Hillcrest Foundation. The Bowman Family Trust has donated, as well as the Communities Foundation of Texas, the Village Giving Circle at the Dallas Women’s Foundation and the Simmons Sisters Fund. The Dallas City Council approved a $400,000 conditional reimbursement grant for the nonprofit, but Bowman says they haven’t received it yet. “We haven’t received a penny of public money at this point,” Bowman says. “Although we are grateful for the conditional grant.” Last year, the nonprofit organized a dominoes tournament at Red Bird Mall. The radio station KTCK got involved, and they raised $60,000. They’re planning to make it an annual event, with the next one planned for Labor Day weekend. Bowman thinks it has the potential to raise as much as $250,000.

DUGG BURGER USES SIMPLICITY AND LOCALITY TO BECOME A DALLAS STAPLE

Dugg’s build-your-own menu has over 20 options to customize a meal. DINING FOOD IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD
SIMPLE INGREDIENTS DONE RIGHT
Story by

“SIMPLE DONE EXCEPTIONAL” is the mantra Scott TerracianoSpence and his business partners Jeff Braunstein and Martin Hennessy used to create Dugg Burger.

After working in the corporate restaurant industry for years, they cultivated their own restaurant and came up with Dugg Burger, a build-your-own, go-down-the-line-style of building a burger.

The family-friendly joint offers options for everyone. “Even though our menu is simple, we have something for burger and chicken lovers, salad eaters, gluten-free dieters and vegetarians,” Spence says. “We even have chalk available for kids to draw with on our brick wall.”

The restaurant hones in on simplicity by doing a few things but doing them well.

Customers start by choosing a brioche bun or carb-friendly option, a bowl of mixed greens. Next comes the protein: beef, crispy or grilled chicken or a portabella mushroom. Next, customers can choose between five types of cheese and more than 15 options of condiments and vegetables.

They offer a unique no mayo chili-lime slaw and a custom Dugg Sauce. It is Thousand Island base mixed with roasted garlic, capers and shallots.

“One of our employees once described it as being ‘more like Ten Thousand Island dressing’ when he had it the first time,” Spence says.

The name Dugg comes from the unique aspect of the burger. The top of each bun is “dugg” out, so all of the toppings stay on the burger. Dugg uses the leftover bun to make its homemade bread pudding.

The first location opened in Casa Linda in 2015.

“We’ve had great success with our original unit in Casa

Linda. We’ve become ‘the neighborhood place’ there and felt that Preston Hollow offered the same opportunity,” Spence says.

Spence opened a second location in Preston Hollow Village amid the coronavirus pandemic. While it’s been challenging to get the word spread about the new restaurant, Dugg modified its system to cater to customers despite restrictions.

“We retooled the operation to focus on delivering food to people’s cars so they could minimize their contact with the outside world,” Spence says. “And of course, we have become maniacally focused on sanitation and safety.”

The restaurant is locally owned and operated and strives to be neighbors in its business areas.

“The people in Preston Hollow are proud of their neighborhood and support local businesses that offer great products and service,” Spence says.

The restaurant itself is a local business supporter.

“We rotate our beer, but right now we offer Dallas Blonde, Mosaic IPA, Blood & Honey, Shiner Bock and Local Buzz. We also buy wine from a local producer, Times Ten Cellars. Other local products we buy are our buns from Empire Bakery and ice cream from Henry’s that goes in our hand-spun shakes,” Spence says.

Spence aims to make the location a Preston Hollow staple by doing what they do best.

“No gimmicks. Just consistently good food served by nice people,” Spence says.

As for future locations around Dallas: “Nothing on the horizon, but we always have our eyes open for the next Dugg,” Spence says.

SIBLING RIVALRY LIKE NO OTHER

oni and Harley are both 4-year-old Jack Russell terriers, and while they might be the same breed, they couldn’t be more different.

Toni is a loving and gentle dog. Harley is rambunctious.

“He marches to the beat of his own drum,” owner Eleanor Grindinger says about Harley.

The Grindingers have only owned Jack Russell terriers.

“My mom and dad think that just having one dog is not beneficial to the dog, so if we do get dogs, it’s

always gonna be a pair,” Eleanor says.

Harley thinks the pair are good friends, but Toni isn’t convinced. Like many siblings, they fight and get on each other’s nerves when they’re together. But they miss each other when separated.

“Anytime you take one of them away from the other, they freak out,” owner Barrett Grindinger says. “If you take Harley to the vet and leave Toni at home she will not stop barking the whole time.”

The terriers fit in with the Grindinger family and each of their dispositions pertains to different members.

“Even though they have really different personalities and they’re sometimes stubborn, they’re the best dogs we could ask for,” Eleanor says.

says. “I can communicate with writing, texting, sitting on my phone. We can communicate, but it’s kind of like we have two different languages. They have theirs and I have mine, but you can still communicate.”

For instance, this interview was conducted over Sorenson Video Relay Service, an app where users can receive or place calls through an American Sign Language interpreter. Nelson wishes similar services would be offered at all community events.

“People say, ‘I don’t know how to provide a sign language interpreter.’ No. Just always provide one so that everyone in the community can benefit,” Nelson says.

hen Christopher Nelson got Van Gogh, he knew that he had to name the 4-year-old border terrier-Jack Russell mix after an artist.

“The reason is because one ear goes down and the other ear goes up,” Nelson says, paying homage to Vincent Van Gogh amputating his own ear.

Nelson is a freelance interior designer and the philanthropy chair of Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS (DIFFA). He is an artist and decorator, and when he takes pictures of his designs, Van Gogh loves to make appearances.

That’s not the only public exposure Van Gogh gets, however, as when he and Nelson take a stroll in Preston Hollow, people often stop them.

“They’re like, ‘Aw, he’s so cute. He’s such a little cute dog,’” Nelson says.

For Nelson, Van Gogh is the perfect companion. Besides being a friendly, loving dog, Van Gogh helps Nelson through everyday life. Nelson is deaf, and Van Gogh can alert Nelson if a fire alarm is going off or if someone is breaking in.

Nelson lost his hearing at age 18 months due to a high fever. Today, Nelson works to bring awareness to the deaf community in Preston Hollow and Dallas through his work at DIFFA, his Instagram and everyday interactions. Nelson advocates for more awareness of the deaf community.

“[Hearing individuals] still don’t know how to deal with deaf people,” Nelson

As for Preston Hollow, Nelson says the neighborhood is pretty deaf friendly, however just like most communities, it still has some work to do.

“The deaf community is always creating ideas and is very zealous in opening that door between two worlds,” Nelson says.

Van Gogh and Nelson both love Preston Hollow and specifically the pet friendly atmosphere it has.

“I grew up on a farm, so we didn’t really have a pet community” says Nelson. “This has more of a community here, so now I’m trying to fall into more of that nonprofit organization and get more involved with pets and animals.”

The Normans weren’t planning on adopting a cat, but an SPCA volunteer told them about a one-eyed Odin, and they immediately knew he was the right fit for their family.

“She was walking out and she turns back, said, ‘Oh wait, he has one eye. Is that OK?’”

owner Alyssa Norman says. “My dad and I were like, ‘Perfect.’”

They find it rewarding to own a cat that other potential families might have overlooked because of his appearance.

“Knowing that you’re doing such a small thing makes you happy and is completely making another creature's life better,” Norman says.

He loves spending his days lying on the back of chairs and even has a leash.

“I was determined that I was going to get him to try and walk with me,”

Norman says. When they first adopted Odin, he did something Norman calls his “nervouswalk,” and their dog terrified him.

“He was a very timid cat when we first got him,” Norman says.

Now, he is comfortable with the family. Odin hangs out with them every night after dinner and occasionally, even sleeps in their dog's bed.

“Most of the day, he’s very snuggly and calm,” Norman says. “And then there’s about an hour every day where he’s just the most playful little excited dude.”

LEAVING HIS MARK

From St. Mark’s to Yale, Anthony Andrews loves a challenge 

Interview by CLAIRE CROW | Portrait by DANNY FULGENCIO

Joining an Ivy League football program amidst a pandemic? No problem. A three-sport athlete at St. Mark’s, Anthony Andrews is headed to Yale this fall to join the Bulldogs’ football team and study engineering. In high school, Andrews played basketball and ran track. He especially left his mark on the football program as quarterback, co-captain, offensive MVP and earning all-conference honors. Life as a St. Mark’s student-athlete prepared him well for his next chapter.

26 prestonhollow.advocatemag.com september 2020

What’s it like being a student-athlete at St. Mark’s?

It is definitely challenging. We had practice from 4-6 every day, lifts twice during the week, then watched film and lifted again on Saturdays. That schedule on top of hours of homework leads to a lot of late nights, but everyone goes through it. It is necessary to be successful.

What advice would you give to other student-athletes? Having a culminating end goal in mind is something that will keep you on track. I was more focused on that end goal during my senior year than I was my junior year and it paid off.

How has the St. Mark’s coaching staff played a role in your football career?

coach Epperson was my advisor and also the head coach during my first three years of high school, so we had a good relationship. He knew that I wanted to be recruited and gave me opportunities to play. He worked with the defensive backs, so I was able to learn from him. At the beginning of my senior year, Coach Lee became the head coach. He instilled a winning attitude in the whole team.

Which colleges did you receive football offers from?

Yale, SMU, Eastern Illinois, Illinois State, Rose-Hulman, Fordham, North Carolina A&T and Southern Nazarene made offers.

What are you looking forward to about college football?

I’m looking forward to the college football environment and having access to on-campus facilities since here I usually have to drive at least 30 minutes to access the gym or weight room.

You were committed to SMU, but recently switched to Yale. What led you to this change?

My decision to commit to a school was very challenging. I was looking for a college that would allow me to play football and study engineering. That combination was hard to find but SMU allowed me to do both and the coaching staff was extremely supportive. I was looking forward to going to SMU but chose to make the switch when I was offered the opportunity to attend Yale in early June. I was actively recruited by coach Reno and thought that Yale would offer me the best opportunities to thrive. I am excited to be a bulldog!

The Ivy League isn’t playing fall sports in 2020 because of coronavirus. Has this been difficult for you and your future teammates?

This is another question that many people have asked me. It’s disappointing to think that I won’t be able to play football next year, but my teammates and I are looking forward to taking this time to better ourselves, especially the freshmen. In the Ivy League, there are no redshirts, so this year “off” has become a de facto redshirt year for us. We have been given a year to study the playbook, get acclimated to academics at Yale, get a year in the weight room under our belts, and a year to bond with each other.

What are the plans for Yale’s team in the fall?

For the freshmen, we will be on campus in the fall and we will still have workouts with a certain number of people allowed inside the gym. We will also have team Zoom meetings. I think as time progresses and if the COVID situation gets better in Connecticut, we will get to do more things as a team.

What do you want to be “when you grow up”?

Ever since I was a little kid, I wanted to be an engineer and a football player. Every kid dreams of being a pro athlete in the NFL. That is not my primary goal, but I would be open to playing professional football and later work as an engineer.

Who is your role model and why?

Quarterback Kyle Murray from the Arizona Cardinals. Like myself, he is soft-spoken and there’s never any negative headlines surrounding him. He is the greatest player to have ever played high school football. I wish to have his success on the field and his demeanor off the field.

Tell a bit about your family. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve gotten from a sibling, parent, relative, or family friend?

My mother is an educator at my former school, St. Philip’s School and Community Center. My dad is an engineer at Love Field Airport. My eldest sister is a University of North Texas graduate and is currently working as a stylist. My other sister is going into her senior year at Howard University. The best advice that they gave me was to listen before you speak.

Blame the virus and look to restore relationships

How to manage stress in an unmanageable time

Hill released a report that 55% of Americans are more stressed now than they were in January. We were already stressed people before COVID-19. It’s only natural that in the face of events of the past five months, we would find ourselves feeling anxious, fearful and disoriented. Those emotions can put a strain on mental health and our relationships.

In our house these days, when we feel the stress level approaching the red zone - typically over work schedules, school possibilities or impossibilities, too much time together in enclosed spaces, or our general worry of the world - we sometimes begin to blame one another. My wife, who is full of wisdom and insight, has started saying, “It’s not your fault; it’s the virus’ fault.”

Everything feels like it’s beyond our control these days, and it’s easy to want to take out our anxiety and stress on others. It’s easy to blame one another or hold others responsible for what feels like a world out of control. The truth is, none of us is directly responsible for the virus, though we are all responsible for doing our part to mitigate its spread.

I believe it is helpful to recognize that we are all living in a time and space that we never could have imagined, and we need to extend more than a little grace. These days are stressful; let’s not take it out on one another; let’s blame the virus and look to restore relationships. That’s our family’s secret to trying to manage these days.

It’s our secret, but it is a borrowed one from our faith. In times of chaos or struggle, the wisdom of our faith always points us back to one another and God. So in these days of chaos, let’s not blame one another for what is beyond our control; let’s begin to find our way back to one another.

With great hope,
