Man in the Mirror Perhaps he’s not an accurate reflection

Why do dogs chase their tails, even after they’ve caught them? Why do people with expensive cars intentionally take up two parking spaces in crowded parking lots?

And why does my aging body still do daily battle with acne?

That’s a question I asked myself the other morning while contorting my face in the mirror right before I gummed my oatmeal and applesauce. It’s not exactly a traditional resolution, I suppose, but surely there must be a way to rid myself of facial blemishes in the new year.

The fact that acne is a problem that just now has risen to the top of my list probably says a lot about my life, especially since the issue continued to clog my brain on the drive to work and even as I fired up the computer to see what had filled my inbox overnight.

And then I read the short email: A good friend was apologizing that a golf outing we were planning a few months down the road probably wouldn’t be happening because he just found out he had esophageal cancer.

I read the few sentences in the email a couple of times, not so much because I didn’t understand what he was saying but because I didn’t want to understand. And then I did what most people would do — I Googled “esophageal cancer” because I didn’t know much about it.

And a few clicks into my research, after soberly noting that the most recommended form of treatment involves finding a “clinical trial”, I saw the numbers: About 16,640 new cases of esophageal cancer are diagnosed in the United States each year, and about 14,500 people die of the disease each year.

As my friend, a real estate investment guy who single-handedly pulled me through our MBA accounting class, noted wryly when I talked with him later: “I’ve run the numbers, and they aren’t very rosy.”

His wife of 15-plus years took the news fairly well, he said, but their two teenagers sobbed uncontrollably. Surgery was out because his cancer already had snuck over to

surrounding organs, so he was pinning hope on four progressively more aggressive rounds of chemotherapy, four 10-day blocks of hell that my friend said he “hoped to survive” in order to buy enough time for cancer researchers to find a cure for his at-the-moment virtually uncurable disease.

“There are still some things I don’t want to miss in my life,” he said, choking a bit as he spoke the words into his phone.

Hang in there, I told him; I couldn’t think of much else to say. Dealing with cancer is a mostly personal crusade, as much mental as physical, particularly when you know the odds don’t favor the outcome you want.

The conversation ended, the obligatory endof-call greetings were exchanged, and we both cursed his situation without swearing or crying or raising our voices.

I worked my way through the rest of the day, completing my regular tasks and booking future meetings on my calendar and discussing future stories for our magazine. And I went home to fill in my wife about the day’s events.

As the day wound down, I found myself in the bathroom again, staring at the same blemished face that had given me so much pain that morning.

And I decided that maybe I wouldn’t spend so much time looking into the mirror tomorrow, because the reflection looking back at me seemed to be pointing in the wrong direction.

PRESTON HOLLOW STUDENTSGET UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL WITH SNAKES

Preston Hollow Elementary recently held its Science Fair with more than 105 science project entries. Students explored all kinds of questions, such as how video games affect cognitive skills, and which gives off more friction — the driveway or the grass. Drs. Moe and Hsia from UT Southwestern along with eight colleagues judged the event. But the real action came after the awards ceremony when students received a hands-on lesson about snakes in a session with Daryl Sprout, aka “The Snake Man”. I think Abriana Mendoza deserves a medal for having the courage to wear one around her face. Search : snakes

Officials finally confirmed back in October that a new H&M store would be coming to NorthPark by this time next year.

EVENTS ONLINE

Does your organization, house of worship or school have an event you’d like to promote? Submit it to our online calendar at bizfinder.advocatemag.com/event It’s free, or you can purchase an enhanced listing.

Dec. 8, H&M set up a consolidated version of the popular clothing store, temporarily, through this spring. However, the store only offers a portion of its entire collection, switching it out every few months. Right now, you can only find fashions in red, black, white and gray. The next installation may be children’s apparel only. At any rate, it’s enough to hold us over until we get the real thing. H&M “lite” is located across from Henri Bendel. – EMILY TOMAN search: H&M

QUESTION OF THE MONTH

We asked our Facebook fans

WHAT’SSOMETHING NEW AND POSITIVE YOU HAVE PLANNED FOR THE NEW YEAR?

This is going to be our low-key, local year. Instead of big trips, it will be small indulgences to support the local community. More tiny dinner parties with friends, more cooking together, more day trips.

—MELISSA GROVE

As a human rights lawyer and activist, I’ll be joining the worldwide campaign to eradicate sexual violence toward women and children.

—DR. MADHUMITA PARIDA

I’m going to help my dear Nigerian friends build a school in rural, middle-belt Nigeria. We broke ground last summer, and this year we hope to build so the Mary Penelope Academy can open in the fall of 2011.

Super Bowl XLV will descend upon n orth Texas on Feb. 6. With the direct economic impact estimated at $611 million, it’s kind of big deal. Preston Hollow resident Bill Lively is n orth Texas Super Bowl XLV Host Committee’s president and CEO. He has deep Dallas roots — more than eight years as president and CEO of the Dallas Center for the Performing a rts, and 25 years as a Southern Methodist u niversity faculty member. Lively’s committee has outdone other host committees in almost every aspect, from the extravagant new Cowboys Stadium in a rlington to landing a record 14 milliondollar sponsorships to the philanthropic initiatives that will continue long after the big game.

What’s on the host committee’s agenda now, with just a month to go until the big game?

We had 1,300-plus days until the game when we won the bid in ’07, and now, it’s execution time. The NFL will be here in the region for a month before the game. So far, the report card has been really, really good. The NFL has responded very well to this host committee. From the beginning, our objective was to use this as a catalyst to do good.

What legacy programs have been put in place?

There are all these things that we promise to deliver, such as aviation, the stadium, transportation. Then there are a lot of things that we don’t have to do. We have $1.5 million in educational programs. We have Service Learning Adventures in North Texas SLANT 45 — which is the largest of its kind in American history. During 2010, 20,000 schoolchildren from all over the region logged 45,000 hours of community service. We also have $2 million invested in the first NFL Youth Education Town in Arlington we call it YET — involving the Salvation Army. It will offer a safe haven for kids to go after school and on weekends.

The evenT is a big deal for our business communiT y. how will iT be showcased?

The eyes of the world will be here for hours in January. it’s unprecedented since the opening of dfw airport. we’ll be able to show our cultural landscape and entrepreneurial spirit, and showcase the region as a vibrant, dynamic business environment. and most importantly, the people. certain people who don’t come down to Texas have a perception of us that’s far from reality. They think it’s like the movie ‘giant’ and the television show ‘dallas’. The difference in the super bowl, as opposed to the world series or nba all-star game, is that most of the audience in the stands on game day doesn’t live here.

was There any Thing abouT your previous posiTions ThaT mighT have prepared you for This underTaking?

roger staubach, the chair of the committee, and i have great people who are all volunteers. in my work with dallas performing arts and even during my time at smu, the common denominator in all of these is the volunteers. we built this airplane in flight. we researched other host committees, but there was no road map.

how is our hosT commiTTee differenT from oThers?

every host committee before now has been business leaders from the center of the city. we have 300 people, ranging from the chancellor at Tcu to the conductor of the dallas symphony orchestra — all kinds of people that represent the region. we have four counties, 120 towns and 6 million people represented. so, people feel like they own this game; it’s theirs.

This hosT commiTTee also has acquired more million-dollar sponsorships Than any oTher. how did you all do ThaT amid The economic downTurn?

we have 14 million-dollar sponsorships— three families if you include the Jones family. That’s the first time families have ever been sponsors. The recession slowed everything down. we’re not immune to the effects of the downturn, that’s for sure. it just took us a little longer.

so, whaT happens af Ter The super bowl?

on feb. 7, we’re going to make reports for the region and the nfl about what happened, amount of income; we’ll begin to terminate our staff incrementally. and here’s the funny part — in fall of 2011, the bid process will start for super bowl 50 in 2016. i tell my staff every day we’re making history.

Make it snappy

During the lunch hour at snappy salaDs, plenty of dudes are seated on the long, wooden tables chowing down on, yes, salads. “I made this place for me, a guy, so that I could eat a salad and not have people call into question my manhood,” says owner Chris Dahlander. He opened Snappy Salads in 2006 to create a healthy alternative to fast food. No processed foods here just fresh fruits and veggies along with hormone-free meats. The restaurant offers five different types of lettuce and about 18 signature dressings with calorie counts ranging from 32 to 180 if you go for the creamy Caesar. The Cobb salad is the No. 1 seller, loaded with iceberg and romaine lettuce, tomatoes, chives, egg, grilled all-natural chicken, avocado and Gorgonzola; light Brown Derby Cobb dressing enhances those flavors. Other options include Southwest, Greek, Asian and fried chicken, or customers can create their own — everything in moderation, Dahlander says. After switching to a salad diet, Dahlander lost about 40 pounds, now weighing as much as he did in high school. “I’m not a nutritionist, but my whole thing is that if you eat the right foods in moderation, you don’t need exercise and diet pills,” he says.

BOGLE VINEYARDS PETITE SIRAH ($10) CALIFORNIA>

It’s difficult to sum up the state of cheap wine as we celebrate the Advocate’s ninth annual Cheap Wine extravaganza and $10 Wine Hall of Fame. More people than ever are drinking cheap wine, thanks to the recession, but I tasted way too much flabby and dull $10 wine over the past year, especially from California. Producers, apparently, were throwing anything in a they could sell for $10 or less, regardless of quality, in order to lure customers.

So call the 2011 Hall of Fame a mixed bag. We four wines, but also lost several: La Ferme de Gicon, a red blend from the Rhone, which was lacking this year; vini merlot from Bulgaria and the Lockwood sauvignon blanc, which apparently aren’t available here anymore; and Meridian’s chardonnay, which tasted nothing like last year’s vintage and neatly summarized California’s problems.

The new members are: Chateau Barat, a French rosé that is fruity and minerally; the Casamatta Toscana, perhaps the best $10 sangiovese I’ve ever had; Chateau Boisson, a white French wine with a little lemon and a lot of minerality; and the Anne Aimee Muller-Thurgau from Oregon, a sweetish wine that is also spicy.

Here’s the rest of this year’s Hall of Fame, all available at Central Market: CNW, and a chenin blanc-viognier blend, Chenin Vio, from Vinum Cellars in California. One caveat: These wines are not $10 everywhere, and the CNW seems to be in short supply.

a white wine from Sicily, that is just one of almost a dozen Sicilian wines that cost $10 or less and offer spectacular value.

and especially the petite sirah. the Spanish sparkling wine, which comes in brut (dry), extra dry (sweeter than brut) and rosé.

, about $12 for a 1-liter box. the white blend from Gascony.

A collection of neighborhood gems

th At A re better th An the ‘best’

Creating a “best of” list isn’t really our speed. At the end of the day, who’s to say what is truly “best”? Highlighting one neighborhood shop, restaurant or experience as better than another based on votes or our (ahem) expert opinion tends to be subjective, and it doesn’t allow us to fully appreciate the countless gems in Preston Hollow.

instead of deClaring the “best” this month, we’re calling attention to the things we love about Preston Hollow — the kinds of things that wouldn’t make it on a broader “best of” list because those of us who live here are among the few who know they exist and who understand their worth.

t his story is only the beginning of our list . We’ll be highlighting the things we love weekly on the Back Talk blog at prestonhollow.advocatemag.com . We want to hear about the things you love, too. Send an email to thingswelove@advocatemag.com , and you might find your description of a neighborhood gem on our website or in the magazine.

1 Marsh Middle School Leadership Cadet Corps

There’s something to be said for junior high kids who simultaneously jump to their feet when a visitor walks into the room. The Marsh Middle School Junior reserve Officers’ Training Corps is one of the best in the region, even earning national titles. Commander David Bates built the program from scratch about a decade ago. Last year, he established the Leadership Cadet Corps academy at Marsh, where students can receive more military-focused training. It’s quite a feat for something that receives no money from the district. Just ask one of the cadets what they like about the program, and they’ll likely smile from ear to ear, take a deep breath, and perfectly articulate their giddy response in the most polite and professional of ways. as Bates said at a recent event, “We’re gettin’ it done in Dallas public schools.”

Of all the architectural marvels in Preston Hollow, The Rachofsky House is in a class of its own. Tucked away near the bustling Preston and Northwest Highway intersection, passersby could easily miss it. Built in 1996 by famed architect Richard Meier, some neighbors simply call it “the square house”. The all-white structure uses natural light, blurring the line between exterior and interior. It fully functions as a home with a kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms and living spaces, but each room also is an art gallery, showcasing a permanent collection of post-World War II artwork from international artists. The exhibits continue throughout the outdoor landscape. Look closely — you’ll find some interesting pieces poking out from behind the bushes. The house offers tours for schools and groups of at least 10 people by appointment. That’s the only way to experience the Rachofsky House — stand on the back façade and consider what Meier had in mind when he designed it: “a kind of elegant case study, an exercise that encourages us to reflect upon what our notions of house and home encompass.”

nowhere else in Dallas can you see films such as the Hitchcock-inspired train wreck “Birdemic” or the Spanish thriller “rec 2”. It’s a brilliant idea, really — B horror so bad that it’s good. at midnight every Friday and Saturday at the Inwood Theatre, patrons can grab a drink from the bar and curl up on the comfy couches for Midnight Madness. It’s almost like hanging at a friend’s house. The weekly program also presents nostalgic and lovable films such as “Ghostbusters” and “rushmore”. But moviegoers beware: People tend to laugh and talk throughout these movies, so if you’re not cool with that, then you’re out past your bedtime. admission is $10.

6 Bobcats

Forget about the countless coyote sightings — Preston Hollow is where you see the real wildlife. Our heavily treed creeks and lakes seem to provide a haven for bobcats, an uncommon predator in the city. Sure, they’re scary, and they sometimes eat your pets, but you can’t deny the beauty of seeing a wild animal like that right in your backyard. We received this note from Bruce Wilke, president of the Hillcrest Forest neighborhood association: “I got a call from a concerned neighbor, Bette Tannen, who lives on Woodmark Court. There was a family of bobcats, she said — two adults and a younger one — that had ‘staked out’ her house and seemed to be watching her little show dog … I told Bette that she ought to grab a camera instead of a gun.” We have yet to receive any photos of these elusive creatures, so please send pictures to etoman@advocatemag.com

Ofalltheoutdoortoysandgreen-living gadgets to play with at Whole Earth Provision Co., it’s perhaps the book section where we end up spending most of our time. amid our hectic, industrial lives, at least we can dream about simpler living. Besides the predictable travel books and “places to see/ things to do before you die”, titles include “Garden Wisdom & Know How: Everything you need to Know to Live off the Land” and “Possum Living: How to Live Well Without a Job and with (almost) no Money”. The store also carries what might be the hippest bird watching manual around — “Charles Harper’s Birds and Words”, which includes different types of bird paintings with humorousandplayfuldescriptions, allwritten with great respect for our environment. and finally, the best book that may ever grace someone’scoffeetable:“LuchaLoco”, a giant collection of more than 120 portraits of Mexican wrestlers with witty one-liners, such as Dr. Muerte’s, “I teach Tae Kwan-do, I’m black-belt. and I’m also in sales.”

8 Dollhouses at Through the Keyhole

through-the-keyhole.net

Inside this quaint, Preston-Forest shop lies a miniature world representing years of hobbyists’ careful precision to create the perfect little reality. Through the Keyhole has become an institution as Dallas’ oldest miniature store, offering all the supplies to build a dream dollhouse — from Victorian mansions to rustic farmhouses. after more than 30 years in business, the shop has only recently caught the attention of children. Most of its patrons are older folks who have spent their lives tinkering with miniature dolls, appliances and detailed décor — right down to the toothpaste tube that sits on the bathroom counter. Since many of these loyal customers have moved to nursing homes and can’t physically continue their cherished hobby, Through the Keyhole has begun buying their collections and carrying them in the store. So, before you head to a big-box toy store, check this shop for true, vintage dollhouses that will pass down through generations.n

More Things We Love:

We asked readers about all of the little things they enjoy about the neighborhood.

“The best neighborhood[is the] Disney Streets. When we bought our house 15 years ago, the then-owners refused to come down on the price, citing the neighbors as worththe investment. They were right! It is not uncommon to see people out exercising, kids playing in the yard, and an easy sense of camaraderie not found elsewhere in Dallas. [And] best milkshake— Scotty P’s. My 2-year-old says they are yummy good! Need I say more?”

“My favorite thing in Preston Hollow is Preston Hollow Elementary School. Mydaughter is in pre-k and has begun reading, improving her writing skills and learning Spanish. I am proud my daughter attends an exemplary school rightin our neighborhood.” —anGela

“Preston Hollow Early Childhood PTA is my favorite thing! We have events about once a week — like book club, educational speakers, Mom’s Night Out, playgroups, parties and children’s activities. This group has really helped me meet a bunch of neighborhood moms I probably would never have had a chance to get to know. In fact, at our last Mom’s Night Out, I sat next to a new member. I’d never met her before. We got to talking, and she lives right down the street! It makes living in Big D feel a bit more quaint.”

“One of my favorite places is the Preston Royal Library, where I can find a current movie, get books on tape for a road trip, or read magazines while my kids pick out their books. They always have someone’s ‘collection of things’ in the display case, which runs the gamut from a child’s collections to an adult who has been collecting for years.” —amie moyer, hillcrest mom

“A native New Yorker turned Preston Hollow resident, our family moved to Dallas seeking a better quality of life, focus on children and slower pace. What epitomizes that for us is The Barnyard at The Lamplighter School. My 4-year old son spends part of his school day handing Cheerios to the roosters, hens, pig, cow and goats. The Lamplighter barnyard harkens back to a simpler time where kids can simply be kids and enjoy the animals. I love that my little boy can stop and feed the chickens, as he has the rest of his life to worry about this pressurepacked world. Ask any Lamplighter alum — they always speak lovingly about their beloved barnyard.” charmaine tanG, Preston hollow mom of two Preschoolers

“One of my all-time new favorites in Preston Hollow is the Butterscotch Pot de Crème at Neighborhood Services at Preston Royal. It comes with a shocking surprise, made with butter and scotch, and it is the most decadent dessert that will melt in your mouth. And it doesn’t hurt that the service at Neighborhood Services is impeccable, explaining the littlenuances of each dish and dessert, enough to make your mouth water.” —amy Zicarelli, sunnyBrooKe states, l amPliGhter mom

WE MUST CHANGE BECAUSE WEHAvE NOT y ETARRI v ED

Myevening reading lately has been Overhearing the Gospel , by preaching professor Fred Craddock. It’s deeper than I find most texts on preaching to be, mining for insights on philosophy, communications, literature and theology.

I found particularly interesting the author’s discussion on “preaching to the converted”. The fact is that most of the people who listen to my sermons have self-identified as Christians for years. Not all, for there are always seekers in our midst, testing the waters of faith; but living in the “buckle of the Bible belt”, the vast majority has heard countless sermons over the years.

That’s a unique challenge, if a common one. How does one preach to the converted? To put the question another way, what does it mean for the converted to be converted? Many of my listeners hang on to long-held assumptions and opinions on many subjects. Often they evaluate sermons on how closely they support those opinions.

However, the message of a sermon should be to affect change in the listeners’ attitudes, prejudices and behavior. Even if the message begins with ancient scripture, it must become contemporary in the lives we lead.

As theologian Karl Barth once said, the preacher must always enter the pulpit with the Bible in one hand and the newspaper in the other. My wife calls it the “so what?” factor. If, having heard a sermon and asking “so what?”, there is no apparent answer in the message, something crucial is missing. The preacher, in this case, is “so heavenly minded that he/she is of no earthly good”.

So I pose the question to you, the reader — especially those of you of strong religious conviction: What does it mean for the converted to be converted? Do we need further conversion, or have we somehow “arrived” at some intended destination on our spiritual journeys?

My own Calvinist Presbyterian heritage has a motto: “Always Reformed, and always being Reformed, by the Word of God.” Calvin was c onvinced, in other words, that we never have it right. Part of our fallible humanity is that

our best efforts fall short of what we are created to be.

I’m reminded of Jack Welsh, the former chairman of General Electric, who said that one of the secrets of his success was that he believed that, no matter how successful his company was, that “we never had it right.” He believed that, to be successful, a company needs to be

open to constant change and reform.

I believe the same is true for us. Speaking for my Christian family, we still don’t have it right. We’ve had our high moments, certainly. Christians at their best have been responsible for much social progress. But at our worst, we have a long way to go.

Studies show that racism among “Christians” remains a scandal. Prejudice is no stranger in churches. Sometimes our long-held positions have divided people and impeded progress.

So, having heard Craddock’s question about converting the converted, I think he is right on. That’s why I keep preaching to the believers. That’s why I keep preaching to myself. Someone has said that the job of the preacher is to “comfort the afflicted, and afflict the comfortable.” The latter is more difficult, because I love my people, but it is essential.

My mind needs changing, too. And so does my heart.

THEY GRABBED EVERYTHING, BUT LEFT THE BEER.

Scott Mallonee had been away on business for a few days. With stops in Indianapolis and Tucson, he was glad to be back home with family. That’s where Mallonee was on Nov. 20, and the family’s cars were parked in the detached garage behind his home.

“I went out Saturday morning, and saw someone had broken into the garage and went through both our cars,” Mallonee says. “They probably jumped the fence.”

The burglar had swiped a GPS, weed trimmer, lawnmower, a child’s toy car, power hedge clippers and gas blower. Also taken were all of his tools.

“It was 20 years of accumulating random tools,” he says of theft.

The burglars even went through the suitcases still in the car from Mallonee’s travels, and stole his and his wife’s sunglasses.

The Victim: Scott Mallonee

The Crime: Garage burglary

Date: Saturday, Nov. 20

Time: Between 12:00 a.m. and 6 a.m.

Location: 6000 block of Del Norte

“It’s the fact that someone went through your suitcases that bothered me,” he says. “That’s a little weird.”

This was his family’s first experience with burglary, but Mallonee says he knows of five other home breakins in the neighborhood.

After taking stock of the losses, Mallonee was surprised by one item left behind.

“They didn’t get the beer out of the garage refrigerator,” he says with a laugh.

Dallas Police Lt. Barry Payne of the North Central Patrol Division says the most common burglaries in this area are those of open or unlocked garages.

“In this particular case, the owner left the garage unlocked so that potential buyers could inspect the property,” he says. “When buildings such as this are left unsecured, expensive equipment and tools are certainly at risk. It would be only prudent to have some sort of Realtor’s lock box containing a key to allow these inspections rather than just leaving the building open.” —SEAN CHAFFIN
