ONLY IN PRESTON HOLLOW: A DAY TO REMEMBER
On a Saturday afternoon in March, Jack Evans (left) and George Harris celebrated their marriage during a reception at Northaven United Methodist Church where they are members. Although unrecognized by the state, the couple exchanged vows after a 53-year courtship with help from the Rev. Bill McElvaney, who in officiating, risked losing his credentials since the Methodist polity restricts its clergy from officiating such unions.

A lot of people seem to enjoy spilling their guts on the internet. I am not one of those people. I am more of an online lurker. I like watching other people make fools of themselves or share advice, but I rarely feel compelled to add my two cents. Generally, if I wait long enough, someone smarter or gutsier will say what I would have said anyway.
For years, my college hosted something called a “listserv” (I don’t know why there’s no “e” on the end of the word). People posted whatever was on their minds about workrelated issues, and other people commented as if they were yelling down the dormitory hall to friends, or sometimes at enemies.
People used their real names on the listserv because that was the rule. If you had something to say, the rest of the group made you stand behind (and sometimes eat) your words. The group offered the ultimate in self-policing, often becoming loud and raucous in an entertaining way, assuming you weren’t caught in the crossfire.
Some of the commenters occasionally became vicious, and there were a few examples of the pack savaging wounded prey. I always think it’s odd that people seem so eager to say seemingly everything on their minds in front of peers; remaining mean and mad takes a lot of energy.
All of this is a precursor to the listserv’s death, which we were told was hastened by the cost of running it. Apparently, it’s expensive to run a listserv, even as Google offers something similar for free. So people were instructed to move over to Google and continue sniping, advising, seeking advice, showing off and lurking there.
An interesting thing happened on the listserv’s death lap, though. One regu-
lar participant suggested that, given the group’s pending demise, it would be a good idea to get to know each other better.
It was a small thought and kind of late in the game considering the savagery some of the commenters had wreaked upon each other over the years. But the commenter forged on anyway, talking about what she has done since graduation: Turns out she is working on a national magazine, starting up an online writing community, freelancing for other online publications and considering a return to teaching. Nothing earthshaking, perhaps, but interesting and admirable nonetheless. She seemed happy, and not in a superior way.
And then a remarkable thing happened: Former combatants chimed in with their personal updates. Some were heartwarming (odds overcome, challenges won), and others were sad (personal issues, lost jobs), but all seemed offered in the spirit of connection and reconnection. As the list of detailed responses passed 100, I learned a lot about what makes people tick by reading how they’ve bounced around and still wound up moving forward.
I’m sure this type of personal introspection wasn’t part of the listserv’s original goal. It was simply an unexpected byproduct of people, most of whom knew each other only through the glow of computers or phones, wanting to reach out and touch others they assumed, or perhaps hoped, were on a similar journey.
The internet was established as a communications vehicle. But we all know that just because we’re communicating online doesn’t mean we’re actually saying anything useful. That was more often than not the case here, too.
But in the end, people wound up being inspired not by technology but by the stories technology allowed them to share.
I didn’t tell anyone my story, remaining a lurker to the bittersweet end. Maybe I should reconsider my engagement quotient, having peeped into the lives of so many others.
Or maybe I’ll just click on over to Google and see what’s happening.

Preston Hollow designer/blogger Kyle Knight shares her tips for home trends
Kyle Knight doesn’t have an interior design degree, but her stylish Preston Hollow home became the portfolio that launched her career.
“Friends started asking me to design their houses,” she says. “I knew that people wanted to hire me before I even began telling people I was for hire.”
She moved to the neighborhood from Lakewood in 2009 and started a blog, knightmovesblog.blogspot.com. There, she chronicled the redesign of her new

abode, which is full of clean lines, fresh color palates and unexpected pattern mixing.
Drawing from a strong art background, Knight exhibits in her home a style all her own (if you ask her where she found a certain piece, chances are she had it specially made). You don’t have to be an expert to break the mold of the Pottery Barn catalog. Knight shows us how:
BUILD ON A NEUTRAL COLOR PALATE.
Knight’s muted gray walls and ivory sectional give her freedom to accessorize with bold colors and patterns from area rugs to reupholstered armchairs to intricately designed lamps. She combs estate sales, consignment stores and even Craigslist for one-of-a-kind pieces that she can re-create for her space. “This is such a design town,” she says. “There are a lot of great resources.”
IT’S OK TO MIX PATTERNS.
But don’t go crazy with it. “There’s definitely a formula,” Knight says. Stick with complementary colors, and pair largescale patterns with small-scale ones. “If you keep consistent colors, those patterns won’t fight with each other. And you also need a healthy dose of non-patterned things.”
WALLPAPER IS BACK.
It’s been back for a few years, actually. But it’s no longer limited to the loud, floral designs our grandparents had. It can add a subtle hint of glamour to a room. Knight’s home office is covered with light-gray-and-white zebra print, and somehow, it works.
ART SHOULDN’T BE AN AFTERTHOUGHT.
Knight developed an appreciation for art early in life and worked in a gallery after college. “My taste in design is highly influenced by my taste in art.” Art is the soul of good interior design, so don’t choose a piece just because it fits an overall aesthetic, she advises; make sure it has meaning and provokes feeling. Otherwise, you might end up with a nice-looking room full of lifeless images.

home swaps a family room for a high-tech movie theater
A cannonball whizzes past your head, hurtling toward the floor of your ship, and your body braces for impact. But just before the panic sets in, you remember that you aren’t standing alongside Russell Crowe in the action/adventure film “Master and Commander,” but rather sitting on a couch inside a Devonshire home.

This powerful viewing experience is exactly what homeowner Nicholas Wood aimed to achieve last summer when he began transforming his upstairs family room into a home theater. He wanted to distinguish his space from the standard home theater and captivate his guests with high-tech,
cinema-quality sound.
Wood estimates that the sound system emits about 18,000 watts of power.
“It’s about the same amount of power in a commercial movie theater, packed into a room about a tenth of the size,” he explains.
He says typical home theaters have around 500-1,000 watts. The formidable audio system, projector and lighting all are controlled via iPhone from the palm of his hand.
With all the electronics installed, Wood addressed soundproofing to ensure optimal audio inside the room while preventing any on-screen explosions from resonating outside the

room. He embraced the engineering challenge, and using acoustically transparent fabric, fire-retardant rock wool and two inches of soundproofing material in the walls, the home theater came to life. However, the work of designing a stylish interior to camouflage the electronics remained.
“You usually see a popcorn machine and a red curtain in a home theater, and I always thought that was kind of cheesy,” Wood says.
He designed all the fixtures and decor for the room using three-dimensional computer software before having everything custom-built. He went for a “library look” with a geometric Greek key design across the ceiling beam and on the Roman blackout shades adorning the windows.
“There’s definitely an old-cinema quality to the theater,” Wood says.

Brunch
Brunch
conjures up images of friends and family lingering over eggs, breakfast potatoes, bacon and, hopefully, a mimosa or two. Add some pleasant spring weather, three patio areas and impeccable service, and you just might be talking about a weekend brunch at Woodlands American Grill. The restaurant has standard brunch fare — French toast, eggs Benedict, biscuits and gravy — but with little touches that up the ante. For instance, the berries that accompany the French toast are drizzled with
a perfectly sweet honey, breakfast potatoes are flavored with Parmesan and truffle oil, and the avocado cream and crab that top the eggs Benedict elevate the brunch classic to a new level. “A lot of people compare us to Houston’s because of the upscale yet casual feel of the restaurant, but the menu is more unique,” says managing partner John Nickolas. Items named after local neighborhoods are an example of that, such as the Hillcrest Pita, which contains smoked brisket, scrambled eggs, feta, chipotle aioli,
chopped greens, avocado, tomato, caramelized onion, and pickle, served with a fruit kebab. To drink, choose from freshly squeezed juice, coffee or, for just $2, enjoy a mimosa or a Bloody Mary. You can come for brunch with a group or solo, Nickolas says. “People call this the ‘Cheers’ of Preston Hollow, because you will always see somebody you know when you walk through the door.”

3. In a medium saucepan, stir together sugar, corn syrup and ½ cup water and bring to boil, stirring often. Continue boiling until syrup reaches 238 F on a candy thermometer (soft ball stage).
4. Turn the mixer on low and add syrup to gelatin. Beat on low until slightly cooled and then gradually increase speed to high. Continue beating until the mixture is cool and peaks form.
5. Pour mixture into prepared pan (over toasted coconut). Immediately sprinkle ½ cup toasted coconut to cover the top of the marshmallows.
6. Allow marshmallows to cool and become firm, about 3 hours. Pour remaining toasted coconut into a bowl. Dust a cutting board with confectioners sugar and coat your knife with oil. Cut marshmallows into desired size and toss each piece in toasted coconut to coat completely. Store marshmallows in airtight container for up to 1 week.

A black, wallpapered accent wall adds depth to the master bedroom. “Some people think black is too overpowering, but it’s actually the opposite.”
Our neighborhood is known for its sprawling estate homes that sit on double-digit acreage behind towering iron gates. But hidden in the corners of our stately locale are modest yet ultra-modern abodes with some surprising features.
Take, for instance, the townhome on Shadow Bend Drive, a stone’s throw from Franklin Middle School. While it may not appear distinguished from the street, the world inside is full of unexpected design elements, most notably the floor-to-ceiling blue accents and the Zen-like texture of one living room wall, backlit with rotating colored lights.
“I’m known for bold colors,” says homeowner Jeffrey Johnson, an interior designer. “It’s a great way to add personality and character to a room.”
Johnson and his partner, Stephen Bulgarelli, have lived here three years, but before they arrived, the home had been gutted and abandoned for at least six months — a remnant of a failed remodel. New Leaf Construction bought the property in April 2010 and began to salvage it.
“We grabbed it the day it went on the market,” says Scott Powell, New Leaf’s owner and general contractor. “It was destitute to most, but I loved the potential I saw.”
Powell and his team had to repair some of the previous work and rearrange the floor plan; it was almost impossible to tell what went where.
“It’s like solving puzzles,” he says. “We didn’t know what we were working with. We had to take two steps back and have new plans drawn.”
With its lofted ceilings, flexible floor plan and large clerestory windows, the house already was poised for a modern redo — not the typical mid-century type seen throughout Preston Hollow but rather following the later trends of the 1970s and ’80s, Powell says.
“The house definitely lends itself to contemporary architecture.”
The project took only a few months to complete, with the focus on a few major areas. The fireplace was rebuilt and given a clean, gray finish with accent tiles. The kitchen

“Our life revolves around food,” Johnson says.
Most of the distinct features throughout the four-bedroom home came from Johnson’s design expertise. After 17 years in telecom, he decided
the LED lighting over the countertops and along the floor beneath the lower cabinets. For them, the kitchen is one of the most important places in the home, since Bulgarelli is a chef for Brinker International — the senior director of culi-
to pursue his real passion and launched his own interior design business.
“I’ve always loved working with patterns and textiles,” he says. “I knew I wanted a career change.”
His use of color characterizes each

“I’m known for bold colors. It’s a great way to add personality and character to a room.”
The first guest bedroom uses cool colors, contrasted by the second bedroom, which carries warm colors throughout.

area of the 3,800-square-foot house one upstairs guest bedroom is full of warm reds and oranges, while the other has cool shades of blue.
The master suite continues the sea of blue seen around the home (“We love water,” Johnson says), but it also features a black accent wall, which, contrary to popular belief, can actually make a room look larger.
“People are afraid to use black,” Johnson says. “Some people think black is too overpowering, but it’s actually the opposite.”
Johnson and Bulgarelli buy most of their furniture new and tend to reupholster pieces that need updating. However, the hold and dynamic abstract art in almost every room isn’t from some expensive collection.
In their own haphazard way, they create the professional-looking pieces themselves, and the result is often full of color and texture. If they later decide they don’t like it, they take it down and create a new one, in just a day or two.
Another repeating feature in the home is the image of Buddha from the life-sized statue behind the front patio gates to the small trinkets on the bathroom counters. Johnson and Bulgarelli don’t identify themselves as Buddhists; they just appreciate the aesthetic.
“It’s calms us,” Johnson says. “We’re both very busy individuals.”
The house still is a work in progress as Johnson continues phasing out some of the less modern pieces, such as his rustic and traditional dining room table. All in all, he aims for designs that won’t go out of style.
“I try to think of something that’s timeless,” Johnson says. “The biggest trend that I’m finding is going into more clean lines. People are going for ‘less is more.’ ”

The lowdown on what’s up with neighborhood businesses

Top Pot Doughnuts to replace Elevation Burger
We’re swapping burgers for doughnuts at the northwest corner of Hillcrest and Northwest Highway. The Seattle-based chain Top Pot Doughnuts will take over the space formerly occupied by Elevation Burger. This is the first out-of-state expansion for Top Pot. The chain’s handmade doughnuts, which originated from a secret 1920s recipe, have appeared on The Food Network and The Travel Channel. The Top Pot business model moves away from “the fluorescentlit fast food aesthetic” and toward a more inviting atmosphere where people want to stay a while. No word yet on an opening date.
Purple Cow closed for good
After 16 years of serving up burgers, milkshakes, and hot dogs, Preston Hollow’s Purple Cow restaurant closed March 5. The Dallas Morning News reports that owner Vicki Bell, who closed two of the three Purple Cow restaurants last year, is considering leaving the restaurant business altogether to start a new venture repurposing furniture. Bell took over the company after the original owner retired last year. The burger joint, known for its kid-friendly fare and adult friendly booze-infused shakes, also served breakfast and participated in community fundraisers. Purple Cow’s self-professed claim to fame was being the only restaurant in the world that sold purple Blue Bell ice cream.
Through the Keyhole closes after 40 years
Through the Keyhole, the longtime miniatures hobby shop at the southeast corner of Preston and Forest, closed March 15 after 40 years of business in Dallas. “It’s sad,” says owner Gayle Harrison Pompa. “There’s just not enough people doing miniatures anymore.” Through the Keyhole specialized in miniature dollhouse items — including figurines, furniture and mini-decor, down to the tiniest details. Pompa says popularity in the hobby has declined; the serious miniaturists are mostly older folks. And the other business killer? The internet. Pompa has operated Through the

Elixir Juice Bar opens in The Shops at Park Lane
Elixir Juice Bar is now open in the The Shops at Park Lane (in the old Freshberry spot). Elixir will serve smoothies, cold-pressed juices, juice cleanses and other health foods. Though the Park Lane space was once home to a bevy of chilly and fruity treats, unlike its predecessor, Elixir Juice Bar’s beverages won’t contain any sorbet, frozen yogurt or artificial sweeteners. The juice bar is the New York-based company’s first store outside of the northeast.
LK Swim Academy now enrolling at The J Swimmer and four-time Olympic gold medalist Lenny Krayzelburg has earned several accolades for his backstroke prowess since competing in the 2000 and 2004 Olympics. Since then, Krayzelburg has opened a dozen swim school academies across the country. His first swim school in Dallas opened March 11 in the Jewish Community Center. The year-round swim program, dubbed the LK Swim Academy, offers classes for students as young as 3 months old through adults. Designed by Krayzelburg, the core purpose is “to inspire water safety and increase self-confidence and independence,” according to the website.

ASH-SMUDGED SOULS
Take time to linger in the shadowy places
For churches that observe the season of Lent, I have found over the years that some find these “40 days plus Sundays” that lead up to Easter to be a solemn time. With its emphasis on self-examination, and perhaps self-denial, it reminds us that unless we prepare in the shadows, the light of resurrection will lose its power. Thinking of this, I sat down on one Lenten afternoon and put these thoughts in a poem. Perhaps the lines that follow will help explain the spirit of the season.
On Ash Wednesday
I was serving the gluten-free body and blood (love takes all kinds of forms these days), as I watched ash-smudged souls walk the aisle to have death washed off them with wine.
The music was somber, fitting I thought, for an occasion so full of dust and shadows. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a friend who goes to a church I’ll not name but where they play rock and roll Christian music and lots of people come, young ones, hungry ones.
I could tell that the ashes upset him, confused him as did the music, somber (again), and in a minor key. Smudges of death and sad music are not welcome in some places; after all, the world knows enough sadness. So we sing alleluias in a major key, trying hard to chase away the dark.
But it’s Lent, I think. It’s good for us to walk through the valley, to linger in the lengthened, shadowy places. It’s good for us to sing songs as sad as grief because those places are there in us, and if not visited, they are lonely places. Don’t worry, my friend, there will be time for alleluias.
One morning, past the dark places there will be a sunrise, a morning after, that explains everything. Wait, my friend, for the alleluias, wait in the dark, for the wait is worth it.

Education
Jake Steele, Dalton Bray, Will Moyer, Robbie Maysent, Cassidy Kaye, T’Erica Johnson, Casey Allman and Gigi Allman of the Hillcrest High School mock trial team took home second place at the 35th annual Texas High School Mock Trial Competition. The students advanced through five rounds of competition and went up against the defending champions from Carrollton Creekview, which took first place.
Hillcrest High School senior Jared Juarez is one of 2,000 finalists nationwide for the prestigious Gates Millennium Scholarship and will find out this month whether he received the honor. Annually, more than 50,000 high school seniors apply for the scholarship. Juarez ranks in the top 1.8 percent of his senior class, serves as captain of the varsity football and wrestling teams, and manages the cheerleading squad. He will be the first in his family to attend college. He’s interested in becoming a civil engineer, a doctor or a veterinarian, as he spends his free time volunteering at Operation Kindness and East Lake Pet Orphanage.

A SKULL SAT IN THE YARD.
Karen Turbeville sells digital X-ray equipment. She had been demonstrating the equipment at a hospital on Feb. 26 and had to leave it in the trunk of her car.
The Victim: Karen Turbeville
The Crime: Burglary of a motor vehicle
Date: Thursday, Feb. 27
Time: Between 8 a.m. (Feb.27) and
8 a.m. (Feb. 28)
Location: 7200 block of Lakehurst
On the morning of Feb. 28, Turbeville went outside her Meadows neighborhood home to find a human skull and skeletal hand in her yard and what remained of demonstration imaging equipment strewn about. The skeletal pieces are part of the equipment and used to test X-Ray equipment without bombarding a person with continued radiation. It would have been extremely difficult for Turbeville to remove the equipment herself because the kit is very large and heavy. Turbeville says she is normally very conscientious about securing her belongings and her vehicle.
The kit costs thousands of dollars, and she is hoping that because the company has the serial numbers on file, and because the equipment is so unique, perhaps it can be recovered and returned.
Now Turbeville is hoping her day was not a complete loss.
“I hope we made the sale at least,” she says with a laugh.
Officers with the North Central Patrol Division say a large number of similar burglaries occur when residents do not secure their vehicle and leave belongings out in plain sight. They urge residents to always Lock, Take, Hide — lock your vehicle, take out belongings, or hide those items that you can’t remove.
Also, it is always recommended to park in a garage when at all possible or in a well-lit area when it is not possible.
