When you plan ahead, the possibilities are endless.
Dallas Area Rapid Transit’s (DART) story is one of movement. It began on Aug. 13, 1983, when more than 100,000 voters in 14 cities and Dallas County cast ballots in favor of regional transportation. The agency’s vision of transporting North Texans efficiently, safely, and costeffectively became a reality after that vote.
DART had a vision for connecting more than just people and places, it wanted to serve as a vehicle to opportunity, progress, and growth. This new transformative transportation would inspire rebirth everywhere it went. From its first bus routes in the 1980s to the construction of the Silver Line today, DART continues to innovate as it adds new chapters to its story.
DART’s Board members, executive staff, riders, and others wanted to see the full potential of a multimodal transit system by ‘building out,’ a mindset that allowed DART to achieve the longest light-rail system in North America at 93 miles.
Since March 2020, a perfect storm of pandemicimposed challenges and infrastructure development delays created a once in a generation opportunity to take DART into a new era. DART’s new leadership pulled together to address challenges and focus on strengthening its rider-centric culture, to fulfill the promise made to city leaders, riders, and the community. As DART continues its journey, it will make safety, security, cleanliness, and reliability a top priority – now part of the agency’s operational DNA and allowing the agency to move forward and find opportunities to surprise and delight its riders.
“DART already had a strong foundation when I joined the organization two years ago,” said President & Chief Executive Officer Nadine S. Lee. “Even so, as a leading transportation provider in North Texas, we will never stop evolving.”
DART is currently investing more than $110 million for a cleaner, safer, and more reliable rider experience. The goal is to provide service that exceeds expectations and to operate a world-class system, powered by world-class employees. Recognized by Forbes as a top employer for four years in a row, DART employs more than 3,700 North Texans, and the organization continues to aggressively add talented, diverse, and passionate people to its workforce.
payment card that makes it easy for customers to ride and save money while doing so. The American Public Transportation Association (APTA) bestowed its prestigious Innovation Award to DART in honor of GoPass, the first ticket-purchasing app to integrate multiple regional transit agencies and different forms of transportation onto a single platform. The app boasts two million downloads to date. In 2023, DART also introduced a new GoPass Tap card retail network that greatly expands the number of locations where riders can purchase and reload the fare card.
Perhaps nowhere can DART’s far-reaching impact be seen more clearly than in its transit-oriented development efforts, which embody the phrase, “Where public transportation goes, community grows.” With more than $16 billion in existing, planned, or projected development, DART continues to collaborate with its 13 service area cities to create fantastic spaces that are a draw for economic and social activities.
ABOUT THE COVER
Meanwhile, the organization’s Multimodal Modernization Program will replace aging vehicles, systems, and facilities giving DART a complete makeover in the coming years. DART’s Mobility+ effort is guiding agency improvements for the next decade, while the Silver Line Regional Rail project will span from DFW International Airport to Shiloh Road in Plano. DART anticipates the line will be operational by late 2025 or early 2026.
In addition, the agency continues to innovate with GoPass, its industry-leading application that modernized the rider experience as a reloadable transit
“As an agency, we have a responsibility to ensure we are meeting the mobility needs of the community,” said Lee. “I am proud of how far we have come as an agency and will continue to work hard to meet the needs of today’s, as well as tomorrow’s, riders.”
Over the next 40 years, DART will embark on new initiatives to elevate service quality and provide seamless journeys for riders to maximize the social and economic potential of the Dallas-Fort Worth region.
“Where public transportation goes, community grows.”
As we look forward to the future of DART, let’s celebrate 40 years of milestones and memories made possible by our riders, employees, and community partners across all our service cities. Fort y Proud. Fort y Forward. Learn

DATA-DRIVEN DEEDS
Meet District 2 Trustee Sarah Weinberg
Story by ALYSSA HIGH | Photo by LO KUEKMEIEREducation is a pathway to economic mobility. Or that’s what Sarah Weinberg, DISD District 2 Trustee’s father used to say. Coming from a family with 12 kids, Weinberg’s father saw education as what lifted him out of poverty, and emphasized the importance of it to his six kids.
“Education was part and parcel to my family growing up,” Weinberg says.
Her dad was a first-generation college student and he served in the army for 20 years.
Weinberg studied accounting and business before working in invest management while raising her children.
“After my third child, I stepped back and started volunteering my time in schools,” Weinberg says. “That re-sparked the interest of education that had been sort of dormant.”
Weinberg volunteered in the Pinkston Sr. High School feeder pattern in partnership with a Southern Methodist University program that focused on literacy.
“It’s so important [to know] the basic fundamental foundation of learning literacy and numeracy and I just wanted to know how I could help,” Weinberg says. “I got deeply involved in understanding what the barriers were and how to bridge the resource gaps to improve student outcomes.”
After volunteering in the district and at United to Learn, an education-based nonprofit, and working with Leadership DISD, Weinberg was inspired by policies that the board implemented to improve student outcomes, like investment in early childhood, college readiness and career pathways.
When former District 2 Trustee Dustin Marshall announced he would not be campaigning for another term, Weinberg decided to run for his seat. She aims to use her experience as a CPA and CFA to guide her fiscal decisions and utilize a data-driven approach to driving policy for DISD.
The DISD Board of Trustees establishes policy, allocates finances and evaluates school performances for almost 150,000 students, 10,000 teachers and 14,000 staff members. Weinberg serves our neighborhood, including Hillcrest High School and the schools in its feeder pattern.
“There’s a sense of urgency in that every day that ticks by is an opportunity in education to have a great day, to improve an outcome, to make a difference, to move towards some goal,” Weinberg says. “It feels urgent to me and it felt urgent when Dustin wasn’t going to run that we have someone who felt that way.”
Sugar & Sage
A neighborhood bakery with high-end pastries and a homey feel
Story by ALYSSA HIGH | Photo by KATHY TRANSOPHISTICATED YET APPROACHABLE.
That’s what neighbor Alison Weinstein and executive chef Jill Bates aimed for when they created Sugar & Sage Bakery.
The neighborhood patisserie bakes all of its confections in-house, including favorites like a cinnamon “cruffin” brioche feuillette, apricot verbena Danish and a mushroom focaccia.
Weinstein’s idea for the bakery began while living in New York, where she grew up and began raising her now-teenage daughter Ashley Sage, an aspiring baker herself. The mother-daughter pair spent their time trying out New York City’s award-winning bakeries, feeling inspired by the kouign-amann at Patisserie Chanson. With one bite of the flaky, salty and sweet pastry, they made the decision — the Weinsteins were opening a bakery.
“It was just super sweet but also salty at the same time, and we joked that it was similar to (Ashley’s) personality,” Weinstein says. “I decided to sign up at the Institute of Culinary Education and found Jill.”
Weinstein paired with Bates, the former executive pastry chef at Fearings at The Ritz Carlton Dallas. While Weinstein was flying back and forth from New York to Dallas in pursuit of opening a bakery in the Preston Hollow area, Bates worked for months with renowned chef Michael Laiskonis on each recipe.
“I have the most creative team, and we talk every day about what ideas we have,” Bates says. “Menu development was a lot of sitting back and being able to think about how I can make this better, and of course, that’s what we do every day.”
The bright and open bakery also partners with Noble Coyote Coffee, a Dallas-based micro-roaster. The baristas are armed with an Aremde espresso maker, the first of its kind in Dallas. The baristas can whip up any typical coffeehouse creation, plus specialties like the aptly named Brown Sugar Sage Latte.
“[It’s] very high-end, very beautiful and this crowd appreciates that,” Weinstein says. “But also in order for them to dive in, we needed to make it a bit more approachable. A place that was warm and welcoming, where the quality is exceptional, but it’s also just a place to feel good.”
Weinstein recently added an outdoor patio to the patisserie — something hard to come by on Lovers Lane. In the back of the shop, it features a shaded area with bright seating, a freshly-painted mural and twinkling lights.
You’ll find moms with extravagant strollers here early in the morning, followed by rushes of high schoolers and college kids getting their caffeine fix and work-from-homers lining the tables with laptops and headphones.
“It has become a bit of an oasis,” Weinstein says.

3 QUESTIONS WITH PRINCIPALS
Meet the principals shaping our neighborhood high schools.
BEN JONES
THOMAS JEFFERSON HIGH SCHOOL
WHAT WAS YOUR JOURNEY TO BECOMING PRINCIPAL LIKE?
My journey to the principalship was unexpected. I was a classroom teacher for a few years, but then I left education to work in nonprofit management. After five years in nonprofits, I felt like I had drifted from my personal mission. Frankly, I just missed being in schools and around kids. So, I made a few calls and within two weeks, I packed up my apartment in Philly and moved back to Dallas and back into the classroom. I expected to be in the classroom for years, but an opportunity to join the leadership team at another campus came up and I really loved the approach and the role, so I took a leap and became a campus coordinator.
In the middle of that year, we had an assistant principal position open up and I was fortunate to be able to take that role. After a few years, I was encouraged to apply to the Dallas ISD LEAD program for developing future principals. I didn’t expect to move into the candidate pool so quickly and definitely wasn’t expecting to move into the principalship that first year. When I got the call to interview for the position here at Thomas Jefferson High School, I knew that my time had come. I am now starting my third year as a principal, and I can’t imagine anything more exciting or fulfilling than serving the students, faculty, team members, and community at T.J.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT BEING A PATRIOT?
T.J. is such a special place, it’s honestly hard to describe. Our community is diverse and rich with culture. It’s truly impressive to see the resilience, confidence and perseverance of the Patriot community. My favorite thing about being a Patriot is simply being surrounded by all of the other Patriots who show up each day to make the world a better place for themselves, others and future generations.
WHAT IS YOUR MAIN FOCUS FOR YOUR CAMPUS THIS YEAR?
After more than three years away from home, we were able to move back into our campus last spring. This year our focus is pursuing excellence in all that we do. Our theme this year is “Limitless: Potential + Effort = Outcomes.” We know our students and team members have limitless potential. We know the outcomes that matter and we know the effort it takes to reach those goals. This year we are putting forth the effort to truly maximize the social, emotional and academic achievement for every student.

TERRENCE FLORIE HILLCREST HIGH SCHOOL
WHAT WAS YOUR JOURNEY TO BECOMING PRINCIPAL LIKE?
I’ve been in Dallas ISD my entire 20year educational career. I started as a middle school math teacher at Thomas J. Rusk Middle School and Sam Tasby Middle School before becoming a Math Academic Facilitator. It was then that I had the desire to become a campus administrator.
I transitioned to Benjamin Franklin International Exploratory Academy as an instructional coach, while I earned my principal certification. This will be the eighth year I have been at Hillcrest High School. The first six years I served as an assistant principal and my last year as an AP, I joined the Dallas ISD Leader Excellence, Advancement and Development (LEAD) Future Principals Leadership Institute, where I gained valuable knowledge and experience on leading a campus. I am now in my second year as principal of Hillcrest High School and love
being a part of this wonderful community.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT BEING A PANTHER?
The sense of community and family as a Panther is like no other. Our team members and community stand together to ensure the overall success and well-being for each student. This is evident in all that we do with our panther pride. The best part is the strong sense of community that is prevalent across our entire vertical team. Unity amongst the Hillcrest schools are displayed through the support and alignment we share with each other. Being a part of the Hillcrest Panther family truly feels like home.
WHAT IS YOUR MAIN FOCUS FOR YOUR CAMPUS THIS YEAR?
We are focusing on making sure all students have a great educational experience each day and hope to continue forging strong relationships with all our stakeholders within the Hillcrest community so we can continue to show up and be our best selves for future generations.
BETH WING W.T.
WHITE HIGH SCHOOL
WHAT WAS YOUR JOURNEY TO BECOMING PRINCIPAL LIKE?
I was a high school Spanish teacher for twenty-one years. I loved being in the classroom, but I also love being a student. When I had the opportunity to be a part
of the first cohort of SMU’s Accelerated School Leadership Program (ASLP), I jumped without the intention of becoming a principal, but rather wanting to continue to learn and grow.
Through the ASLP I realized that I could serve and impact even more stu -
dents in school leadership, and I really started to see the “big picture,” so I decided to pursue an administrative role. I started as a grade-level team lead at Greenhill School, then became an assistant principal at Lake Highlands High School. Shortly after I became an assistant principal at Bryan Adams High School, which led me to my role as principal at Dealey Montessori and International Academy. Finally, I landed my dream job here at W.T. White High School.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT BEING A LONGHORN?
I love being a Longhorn because of the students, families, and staff who collectively create a vibrant and supportive community. It’s truly inspiring to be part of an environment where traditions are not just upheld but cherished as a testament to the unity and pride that define us. What sets this community apart is our unwavering commitment to living out our vision, mission and values on a daily basis. It’s not just about words on a page; it’s about the genuine dedication we have to making a positive impact on each other.
WHAT IS YOUR MAIN FOCUS FOR YOUR CAMPUS THIS YEAR?
Our main focus is for all students to have what they need to be successful, because we believe that every individual deserves the opportunity to thrive and reach their full potential. To achieve this, we are dedicated to building meaningful relationships with our students, recognizing that a supportive and caring environment is the foundation upon which their success is built. Additionally, we recognize the invaluable role that co-andextracurricular programs play. Our exemplary programs are designed to provide students with a well-rounded experience, allowing them to explore their interests beyond the classroom to help foster teamwork, leadership skills and personal growth.
A kindered home
A home on Norway Road showcases an innovative departure from traditional house design
Story by KELSEY SHOEMAKERTHERE IS A MISLEADING HOUSE ON NORWAY ROAD.
The home is cheerful yet subdued from the curb. But walk through the doors, and you’re immediately greeted by soaring 20-foot ceilings.
The home is a product of a kindred friendship between architect and interior designer Michael Malone and homeowner Gail Hackney.
“Someone had strongly recommended Malone and said he’s an architect who thinks with both sides of his brain, you know, the creative as well as the practical,” Hackney says.
The two first met when Malone remodeled Hackney’s old house in 2008. Then Hackney and her late husband purchased the Norway Road house in 2009. It was perfect for entertaining.
Over 12 years, the duo met almost every Saturday morning to pour over design details.
“It’s kind of like if you give a mouse a cookie,” Hackney says.
She didn’t want a traditional house like the one they had before. A Southern-inspired house with porches and a continuity between the interior and exterior was the right fit for her.
Malone suggested considering the early 1900s style in England, where for more than 25 years, houses were built with white stucco material and used primarily white interiors with blonde oak floors and simple furnishings. A combination of sloping roofs and very simple massing, the homes had many windows to encourage natural light to highlight the white interior tone.
At first, Hackney wanted to keep her existing furniture and have Malone design around the pieces. Early in the process, they pivoted.
The blank canvas created more opportunities to add personal touches.
“We developed a rapport and worked together and understood what each other was talking about,” Malone says. “We had so much fun doing it. I attribute that to just them being engaged. It wasn’t arduous.”
The entry rooms are bathed in natural light, an introduction to the energy of the rest of the house. The high ceilings help brighten the room and leave no corner of the room unacquainted with light. Gail’s father-in-law’s grand piano is the centerpiece of the room. Family photos fill the shelves with soft touches of yellow.
In the dining room, Hackney uses her grandparents’ furniture. Malone also customized the rug to continue the leading line from the entry to the main living areas.
If the house is a heart, then the kitchen is the pulse. Malone intentionally designed the house around the kitchen as he took Hackney’s love for cooking into consideration. Hackney has attended the Culinary Institute of America for several classes and it was key to have a trophy kitchen. The kitchen also opens out into the living area, which carries the blue motif.
“When we were first working on the house, Hackney showed me a picture of a very simple white-on-white paneling,” Malone says. “And so we use that to somatically tie all the rooms together, and then of course, it picks up on the fireplace and the window grid.”
The upstairs living spaces include pops of color in the guest rooms and the second-level living area, which was designed for Hackney’s daughters as a hangout. Although the daughters have moved out, it still serves as a spacious room for gathering when they visit. A collection of colorful Vogue covers and other fashion books decorate the room.
Although there were the usual mundane headaches during the design process, one of the more quirky takeaways from the project was that Malone wasn’t a huge fan of the color blue. But little by little, his fondness for the color grew. The brick trim paneling of the exterior is blue, complimenting the interior.
“It’s more about the volume than the colors,” says Malone, while wearing a blue suit. “And so when I suggested that, they must have trusted me. A little bit of that was that was a big moment for me.”
His architectural firm, Malone Maxwell Dennehy Architects, turned 31 on Valentine’s Day this year. In the past, the firm’s work has included retail spaces, commercial and residential homes. When Malone started the firm, he wanted to work in a happy environment and leave on a good basis.
“If you go to our website and click on a house, you’ll see they’re all very different because they all reflect the people we’re working with,” Malone says. “Which is incredibly gratifying. That’s the most fun you can have. It’s just always doing projects for people. Because it’s always fresh and different.”
Malone and Hackney attested that the process from start to finish was seamless and stressless. It might have been the easiest project Malone’s worked on.
“I still get comments,” Hackney says. “Like if I order a pizza, and the delivery person comes and I open the door, and they’re like, ‘Wow, I love this house. It’s because it’s different.’ ”
The house will be available to tour during the 17th annual AIA Dallas Tour of Homes Oct. 28 - 29.
We believe students' lives are enriched by engaging in challenges, opportunities, and exploration far beyond the classroom.
