ART
THERAPY
Struggles fuel creative evolution for this Preston Hollow sculptor, philanthropist and mother
Story by CHRISTINA HUGHES BABB | Photography by YUVIE STYLESJennifer Troice’s vaulted, multi-level home stands out, even on a street of dazzling dwellings constructed after a 2019 tornado leveled much of Pemberton Drive.
Behind the stately exterior resides a warm, creative family of five, including Troice’s husband, Jamie Haidenberg, M.D., plus one bouncy, bilingual silky-soft bernedoodle named Maya. (“Abajo,” Maya is told when she jumps to greet visitors.)
Troice’s geometric-minimalist-style sculptures are displayed throughout the house.
There’s a show-stopping, three-foot bald eagle (a gift to her husband), black bear and gorilla from her endangered species collection; an array of silhouettes seated on shelves, willowy limbs dangling; and a series of free-standing human hands signaling messages of happiness and love.
Sons, ages 8, 7 and 4, have contributed colorful dinosaur statuettes. A polychromatic sea turtle represents a collaboration with local painter Jenny Grumbles.
Troice came to Dallas after the 2019 twister, but she has weathered personal storms. She has experience smashing
and rebuilding, which can be therapeutic, she says.
Troice doesn’t specify the circumstances of a traumatic incident she suffered when she was 17, living in Mexico City, but she says the painful event powered her art career. Someday she will discuss her history in more detail, she says, but for now her kids don’t need to know everything.
“Before that experience, I loved art, I studied music, played piano, harp, but I did not have the creative spark in me,” she says. “But afterward, my first little collection just poured out. I didn’t stop, like art therapy without knowing art therapy existed.”
There was no defined style then. She made “a little bit of everything.” And once that first series was done, she broke and burned the whole lot.
“It was like closing my circle and saying OK, now I’m going to start making nicer things.”
This year, she published a coffee-table book, My Silver Lining: Healing Through Art .
Pages contain breathtaking photos and stories about her life, work and noteworthy collaborations. Several are dedicated to a picture-by-picture description of the
laborious casting procedure.
“Sculpting is an intense process, and Jennifer has mastered it,” says Esther Lewin, a teacher at Dallas’ Early Childhood Education Center who reviewed the book.
“Her skill and passion are unlike others. Each piece has a meaning and a story.”
By 21, Troice completed her first large-scale installation. In the lobby of the cancer center in Mexico’s American British Cowdray Hospital, bronze human “Helping Hands” appear to reach out of the walls to
comfort visitors. Later, in a new wing of the hospital, she sculpted a one-ton “Tree of Life.”
Rhea Braniff, the woman who commissioned those pieces on behalf of the hospital, died of pancreatic cancer just as Troice was finishing “The Tree of Life.” A bird nestled within the squared-off metallic leaves is dedicated to Rhea, with whom she had become close friends, Troice reveals in her book.
Before leaving Mexico, the mother and artist left a whimsical family-themed mark on a Veracruz park,
building life-sized bronze figures and interactive pieces including a see-saw with a built-in playmate affixed to one seat.
It took about three months, and her sons — the youngest but a few months old — were there for it.
“It was really fun to work on this with my kids,” Troice says. “I like that they learn not only how to make a sculpture but that there’s a certain order to making things, and you have to have patience, wait for things to dry, you can’t just skip to the end.”
While Troice misses certain things about Mexico, she says Preston Hollow, where her boys attend St. Mark’s, is a better place to raise a family. And it is a good place to be an artist.
“Dallas has a wonderfully tight-knit art community, where artists support and show up for one another.”
A potentially disabling neurological disease also failed to bring Troice down. Instead, a 2021 multiple sclerosis (MS) diagnosis opened more doors to healing and helping others. Today she’s on the committee of the Yellow Rose Foundation Gala, a Dallas event that raises millions each spring for MS research. Gala promos boast that Troice has “generously donated her sculpture, ‘Cubist Horse,’ to be featured in the live auction.”
That item, an entrancing isometric
equestrian bust in lost wax bronze casting, sits in a room off the entryway amid stacks of envelopes, boxes, giveaways and gift bags containing palm-sized, squishy “stress roses” — Troice is in the throws of organizing for the April fundraiser.
She believes science is on the cusp of eradicating MS, a faith that fuels her altruism.
Twenty years ago there were, maybe, two treatments, she says. Now there are 22, and progress is still happening relatively quickly.
Medical professionals can be slow to identify the illness. She says she has suffered symptoms — “like pain all over the body, but feet, mainly, like I am stepping on needles” — since she was 13.
The type of artwork she does is
physical, requires hours of standing and heavy lifting, so at times she has traveled with a wheelchair. She underwent a pointless bilateral leg surgery, thinking the problem was a tunnel syndrome, she says. “I’m thinking, OK, that’s it. Nobody knows what it is. So I’ll just live with it. And in December 2021, I got my worst flare-up. I couldn’t walk. I lost muscle mass, was in extreme pain.”
That crisis ultimately led to a diagnosis, after which she was able to receive more targeted treatment. Conditions that plagued her for decades have improved.
“The next generation might not know what MS is or, hopefully it will be a remote disease, like polio. I have hope that it will happen in my lifetime.”
A MATTER OF CRIME
Muggings, burglaries and purse snatchings have had Preston Hollow residents on edge in 2023, but is neighborhood crime really ‘out of control’?
On a sunlit March afternoon, a masked man strode up a Preston Hollow driveway and aimed a gun at the homeowner and his daughter, who were unloading grocery bags from their car. The mugger made off with a cell phone and wallet and escaped in a waiting vehicle, says the victim, who asked to withhold his name for safety reasons.
“Everyone needs to be careful when leaving the grocery stores,” says the Preston Forest South resident. Police determined the robber followed the pair home from the Tom Thumb on Preston at Forest.
Around the same time, there was a surge in news and social media reports related to vehicle break ins, purse snatchings and aggressive panhandling in shopping centers at Preston Forest and Preston Royal, where one day last year three small businesses were victims of destructive smash-and-grab burglaries.
On platforms such as Nextdoor, neighbors complain that crime in our neighborhood is out of control, terrible and getting worse by the day.
“A lot of Preston Hollow people
do not feel safe right now. People are getting robbed, mugged and followed home from the shopping center,” says Preston Hollow North resident James Carey. “For a while, we were hearing about these every day.” But is crime really worse than previous years?
Kory Helfman, who owns Ken’s Man’s Shop, one of those 2022 smash-and-grab casualties, said parking-lot robberies and burglaries spiked last fall and that he, his employees and clients have been on high alert ever since. But he has been in Preston Royal Village since the 1990s and cannot say things are either far better or worse in 2023.
“We don’t wish to scare people away from Preston Royal Village with this news,” he says when discussing the crime spike, “but we do want them to be aware of their surroundings and what they leave in the seats of their cars.”
Some residents say they are not comforted by the statistics, pointing out that many citizens have given up on reporting minor crimes because the police are so slow to respond to those calls.
Deputy Chief Rick Watson of the Northwest Patrol Division says he “respects and understands” that frustration. It’s no secret the Dallas Police Department is shorthanded, he says.
“That’s no excuse, but (long response times) can happen when you only have so many officers and your priority-one call load is heavy. Say, God forbid, someone is shot or a highway accident occurs on Central Expressway, that’s going to tie up several officers for several hours, as an example.”
Still, he encourages residents to report all crimes. Those reports help determine police resources in the area.
Neighbors who file a police report with the Dallas Police Department should also contact their local patrol division afterward about the incident and provide details and the incident number, says Major Mark Harris of the North Central Patrol. That way, community police can follow up with DPD, he says.
City leaders have pointed out that solid police work conducted after the recent high-profile reports of muggings, snatchings and break-ins resulted in multiple arrests.
Here are some statistics for the areas of concern and surrounding neighborhoods, as of late April 2023. (The following data omits violent domestic crimes reporting.)
North Central officers in March arrested a person suspected in Preston Forest motor vehicle burglaries.
“Diligent and vigilant investigative work caught this criminal,” council member Gay Donnell Willis announced at the time.
Around the same time, Northwest Division police were able to arrest both a purse snatching suspect and a robbery suspect by using surveillance, Watson says.
One purse snatcher was scouting out the Preston Royal parking lots waiting for shoppers to leave belongings unattended, Watson says. When the victim turned to unlock the car or load groceries, the perp would strike.
After a gunman followed and terrorized a man and his daughter, North Central officers set up in the nearby Tom Thumb parking lot. They determined perpetrators were watching people come and go and targeting individuals to follow home and rob.
Suspects are typically out on bail in a short time, and even when they do go to jail or prison, there is always another criminal to replace them. But Watson says since those early March arrests, no further purse snatchings or armed robberies have been associated with Preston Forest and Preston Royal shopping centers (as of late April).
That said, crime tends to increase with warmer weather, police say, so now is a time for diligence.
“If you're going to a restaurant or to a shopping center, just be very mindful, take a look around, and if you see a person or situation that you don't feel comfortable about, then by all means, call 911 to report it,” Watson says.
Helfman says Preston Royal patrons can reduce their risk with a simple step: Remove all valuables from sight in your parked car.
“A purse, shopping bags, iPad — even if only for a couple of minutes while you run into one of the shops — is enough time for the smash-the-window-and-grab scenario to play out. We just want people to be aware and diligent.”
North Central’s Maj. Harris says if you feel threatened, dial 911 immediately.
“If you think you are being followed, do not go home, and drive to a police or fire station.”

Bizzy Burgers come in three sizes and are able to be customized with toppings called Blendz.
THERE’S A NEW BURGER IN TOWN
Bizzy Burger Merchants wants to elevate fast food
Mark Brezinski has opened more than 120 restaurants throughout the years.
Whether it was Velvet Taco or Pei Wei Asian Diner, he still gets a sense of anxiety when creating a new business. And it was no different for Bizzy Burger Merchants.
“A new brand just takes time,” Brezinski says. “It takes an incredible amount of patience and a few sleepless nights. New businesses are not for the faint of heart.”
Bizzy Burger is located right in front of McDonald’s and down the street from Burger King on Monfort Drive. Being sandwiched between two burger giants, Brezinski had to find a way to make his restaurant stand out.
Brezinski is known for taking ordinary food and making it extraordinary.
When creating Velvet Taco, Brezinski knew that every taco restaurant had the same three tacos — carne asada, shrimp and grilled chicken. He knew that he wanted to do something different while elevating the idea of what a taco can be. The same can be said for his new burger venture.
“I see things that exist and try to make that thing better,” Brezinski says. “I know everybody likes hamburgers, but I didn’t want to just do another burger joint, so I did things a little differently.”
Bizzy Burger prides itself on being an elevated
version of the everyday burger. There is a simple formula for customers to follow when ordering from Bizzy: Choose a burger, choose a cheese, and choose a topping.
Burgers come in three different serving sizes: Kinda Bizzy, the single burger; Very Bizzy, the double burger; and the Extremely Bizzy triple burger. All come with or without cheese. Patties are made from 80/20 Kobe-style ground beef that is raised locally and brought fresh to the restaurant. Due to its size, Bizzy is able to use higher-quality meats and ingredients. The price for a Bizzy Burger ranges from $3.50-$7.50.
Another big difference between Bizzy Burger and the average fast-food burger place is the toppings; diners won’t find the typical lettuce, tomato and onion options.
Instead, Bizzy Burger offers “Blendz,” which are cooked and turned into purées. All burgers come with one Blendz, but more can be added. There are five flavors available: mixed hot peppers, roasted garlic and sweet onion, wild mushroom, blistered tomato and fresh herbs, and Korean barbecue.
The side dishes are also out of the ordinary. Tot Fries have the texture of tater tots with the physique of French fries, fried onion straws are Bizzy’s take on onion rings, and there’s also spicy house-made kimchi.
Bizzy Burger also offers a vegetarian burger option. Unlike some places that offer a combination of meat substitutes or bean patties for their veggie burgers, Bizzy offers a true “veggie burger.” The Bizzy Veggie Stack includes layers of thinly sliced, fresh vegetables griddled to finish with cheese and one Blendz, just like the beef burgers.
Since opening, Brezinski has added additional items to the menu, per the request of satisfied customers who wanted to know if he could elevate chicken sandwiches the way he did burgers.
Brezinski put on his thinking cap and came up with two items — a chicken parm sandwich and a hot chicken sandwich. The chicken is in the form of a patty, fried in
panko breading, with pickles added to the sandwich. The hot sauce used is made inhouse and is combined with the mixed hot pepper Blendz.
The ultimate goal for Brezinski is to make better fast food.
“Here at Bizzy Burger Merchants, we want to create better fast-food alternatives that can expand and go into different neighborhoods and become a brand,” Brezinski says. “To be able to do what Velvet Taco did for tacos, but for burgers.”
“We can do better fast food. Eat better burgers,” he says. “That’s what I’m trying to do.”
THE CANONS ON CANVAS
The Museum of Biblical Art brings together artists celebrating Judaism and Christianity
Story by ALYSSA HIGH | Photography by LAUREN ALLENTucked behind NorthPark Center, a hidden museum displays the works of well-known artists such as Andy Warhol, Salvador Dali and Thomas Kinkade, as well as casts from the works of Michelangelo.
Museum curator Scott Peck brings together artists from different centuries, mediums, races, religious backgrounds and genders to display works of art depicting themes of Judaism, Christianity, biblical themes and Holocaust remembrance. In fact, the museum boasts that 30%-40% of the art is created by women. Most museums have approximately 3%, Peck says.
“I’m really trying as a curator to give you balance, also to African American artists and Hispanic artists, to give them representation,” says Peck, the museum’s executive director and curator. “Not only as artists, but in the depictions to go (as a visitor) ‘I see myself.’”
The museum also has an Art Conservation Lab, which became a necessity after a fire hit the museum in 2005. Peck, who also teaches at the Universi-
ty of North Texas, brings in his students to restore art at the lab to supplement their coursework.
Before entering the museum, visitors can peruse the Via Dolorosa Sculpture Garden, which demonstrates the 14 Stations of the Cross through bronze statues. Once inside, the museum has three sections: the National Center for Jewish Art, the Museum of Biblical Art and the Museum of Holocaust Art. Each section has several temporary exhibitions that change seasonally, such as Andy Warhol’s Jewish Heroes and Icons, which features David Salomon’s photographs of Flowers of the Holy Land and Jorge Cocco’s “Come Unto Christ.”
NATIONAL CENTER FOR JEWISH ART
The National Center for Jewish Art opened in 2019, shortly before being shut down for COVID-19. The only Jewish art and culture museum in this region, the museum displays gold-clad Seder plates, menorahs, puzzle boxes and other ceremonial objects.
Currently, a temporary exhibit features the work of Helen Zarin, an abstract artist who left Iran 15 years ago to safely practice Orthodox Judaism.
“She goes into her prayers and then God reveals stories that she incorporates into the color,” Peck says. “This has been a really popular exhibition.”
MUSEUM OF BIBLICAL ART
The Museum of Biblical Art features archaeology, oil lamps and ancient maps collected in partnership with the University of North Texas.
Adjacent to the maps is Dali’s “Heaven,” a collection of wooden engravings depicting scenes in Jesus’ life, heaven and other biblical imagery. The engravings demonstrate emotion surrounding the artist’s latein-life rejection of surrealism and conversion to Catholicism with soft-layered colors creating emotional interpretation of the positivity he felt surrounding the faith.
The museum also includes casts of Michelangelo’s works, and a myriad of ceramics, paintings, sculptures, tapestries and other art forms that demonstrate themes pertaining to Christianity and the Bible.
One notable feature is the work of Kinkade, who was a friend to the museum until his death and has a series of paintings themed after biblical scenes. Unlike his cottage paintings or more whimsical series, each work brings a greater depth to his emotional ties to the pieces, highlighting the feeling of the paintings rather than the details typically characterized in his works.
Within the Museum of Biblical Art is the Chagall Ballroom, which can be rented for events and showcases some of the more than 200 works by Marc Chagall that the museum displays.
Museum of Holocaust Art
The Museum of Holocaust Art is the first museum dedicated to teaching the history of the Holocaust through art, Peck says. Participants walk through an immersive experience, moving aside curtains painted with children as they were in concentration camps while surrounded by mirrors, urging participants to visualize themselves in the atrocity.
After walking through the curtains, there is a “Righteous Among the Nations” series, where non-Jews who committed themselves to saving Jew-
ish neighbors during the Holocaust are honored with portraits and plaque descriptions of their lives.
The museum is open 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday. Museum guides suggest allocating approximately two hours to get through all sections, including time for the audio tours available in several exhibits.
Standard admission includes all exhibits and is $15 with pricing of $12 for students and seniors, and $10 for children ages 6-12. Children under 6 are free. Family admission discounts and memberships also are available.
The Cavalier King
Ted Eubank went from Westminster competitor to Westminster judge
Steak ancho butter fajitas, a frozen guava margarita and chips and salsa at Escondido. Story by ARIEL WALLACE Photography by VICTORIA GOMEZTed Eubank has always been a dog person. His first dogs were bird dogs owned by his father, a bird hunter.
In 1990 Eubank and his wife, Mary Grace, bought their first Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, named Chelsea. They had no intentions for Chelsea other than being a pet until they were approached by Cavalier breeders who thought she would be perfect for dog shows.
At this time, the Eubanks had never trained or practiced with Chelsea. The first time they practiced walking around with her was at the competition. Chelsea ended up winning “best in the match.” The same year, Eubank attended a showing in Dallas with Chelsea, and she won that competition as well.
When Eubank bought his first Cavalier, the dogs weren’t recognized as a breed by the American Kennel Club (AKC). It wasn’t until the popularity of Cavaliers shows grew, thanks to the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club USA, that the AKC decided to recognize the dog breed. The Westminster Kennel Club, established in 1877, is second only to the Kentucky Derby as America’s longest continuously running sporting event in the U.S. When Westminster Kennel Club first offered classes for Cavaliers the Eubanks were there. This was the first time the Cavaliers were shown at Westminster.
In 1997, Eubank’s male Cavalier, Rocky, took Westminster by storm.
Rocky went on to become the top dog in the country that year and continued to win for the next few years. He won eight all-breed “Best in Show” awards. Allbreed shows can include between 900 and 4,000 dogs competing at one time.
The Eubanks then decided to get their judging qualifications to be able to judge Cavaliers. The Kennel Club recommends a minimum of five years of involvement with each specific breed before judging. Eubank worked several years as a judge for the Cavaliers, and then he stepped out and earned his qualifications to judge the Toy and Sporting groups. He now judges over 57 breeds.
At the peak of his competing era, Eubank attended shows 40-45 weekends a year and competed in 100150 shows per year. As a private judge, Eubank judged in 10-12 shows per year, and has shown in over 1,000 dog shows in his career.
He was asked to be a judge at this year’s Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show this month, bringing him full circle in the dog show world. Eubank was overjoyed and shocked when he found out about the news.
“People had asked me forever, ‘Oh, you think you will ever judge at Westminster?’ And I said, ‘No, I don’t know anybody in the club,’” Eubank says. “Then it came in the mail. I think it was in either late October or November when the invitation came. I opened it up, walked into Mary Grace’s office, and I was absolutely shocked. I’m very honored that I got invited to do judge.”
This is Westminster’s 147th consecutive year. Approximately 3,000 dogs are entered in the two-day competition. Normally, it is held in February at Madison Square Garden. But this is the first time that it will be held in May and at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens.
Eubank will judge around 120 dogs and over eight breeds including Cavaliers, English Toy Spaniels, Pomeranians, Pekingese, and Miniature Pinschers.
To prepare for the competition, Eubank has been hitting the books, studying the standards for every breed he is judging. Standards can contain up to four pages of detail per breed.
“The breed standards are like the Bible when you are judging,” he says. “So I am just going back and refreshing myself before the competition.”
Eubank has no plans to stop judging and competing in shows. He even wants to earn more certifications to judge other breeds. His next goal is to tackle the Sporting group.
“I want to judge for a long time,” Eubank says. “To me it’s fun. It is stimulating. I love dogs a lot. I like learning about new breeds and coaching.”
The 2023 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is May 8-9. The show will be available to watch on FOX.
“Oh, you think you will ever judge at Westminster?’, And I said, ‘No’... Then it came in the mail.”
