Ursuline Academy alumna Melinda

French Gates is on tour for her book

“The Moment of Lift: How Empowering Women Changes the World.” In the book, she shares her story along with tales of women who she has met around the world. She recalls Ursuline teacher Susan Bauer, who advocated early for personal computers for students. “She believed that girls could code when hardly anybody was coding, girls or boys,” Gates told the Dallas Morning News.

A neighbor was on her way to afternoon carpool with her young daughter in the car when she saw a sedan make an erratic U-turn in an intersection. After the woman tried to take a photo with her phone, the driver of the sedan chased her down, boxing her in at a stop sign next to Preston Hollow Park. The sedan’s passenger leaned out the window, yelled and pointed a weapon at the neighbor, then threw a large unidentified object at her car. “I was terrified,” she told CBS 11. “I was in fear for our lives.”

Is your heart acting its age?

Jesuit College Preparatory School bought hundreds of seats to a Texas Rangers homestand against the Pittsburgh Pirates this spring in honor of one of its alumni.

Josh Bell plays first base for the Pirates. He graduated from Jesuit in 2011 and was selected in the second round of the Major League Baseball Draft that year. He received a $5 million signing bonus, turning down a scholarship to the University of Texas at Austin. It was a difficult decision, he says, but his dad was a guiding force.

What was it like growing up in the Dallas area?

It was an awesome place to grow up. I grew up in the Coppell area, so I had to commute. I ended up going to St. Rita’s from fifth grade on and then Jesuit following that, so I spent a lot of time on [Interstate] 635, but it was worthwhile. It laid that foundation for the type of person I am today.

What are your memories of Jesuit?

I can’t forget senior retreat. The teachers did a really good job of arranging people who never took classes together or played sports. I became close friends with a guy named Edward Cohen. I attended St. Rita’s with him, but I never really spent time away with him. That’s a friendship that I hold dear to my heart. It was an awesome three or four days, kind of unplug from society and dive into spirituality. It laid the groundwork for the rest of my life.

How old were you when you started playing baseball?

I started at 4. I played local T-ball, blocks away from my house. It’s cool that I can drive past that same complex and reminisce about the good times that I had with Dad and some teammates there. I played for the Pirates for T-ball. In high school, I played for the Dallas Patriots.

What does your dad think of your success?

He’s excited. I’m playing well right now. He helped me perform at this level at an early age. My dad was always challenging in the backyard. He had this pitching machine, and whenever I started hitting it well, he’d move closer, so it was that much harder. My parents watch every game. I’ve got family members that listen in. I can only imagine what it’s like for him, but I see guys with kids in the clubhouse now, and it’s dawning on me how cool it would be to have a kid in the big leagues.

Do you have a pre-game ritual?

I always pray during the National Anthem. At Jesuit, there was a meditative stretch after lunch, when you could reflect on the day and

on God’s love and ask for guidance. I use the National Anthem as that time. I give it all to Him and ask for His favor. I ask to play without fear or anxiety.

How do you deal with stress?

I call my dad after the game or the following morning. He is spiritual and uplifting, so whatever’s on my heart, he steers me in the right direction and keeps me believing in myself.

What did you learn about yourself in 2018? Failure is a great teacher. You can work your tail off and not see results. I had to look myself in the mirror and realize that this jersey might get taken off my back if I don’t perform the way that I need to. Some people might look at that as a terrible, scary truth, but I try to use it as fuel and work my tail off in the off-season so I can prepare myself for the season.

What’s the most challenging thing you have overcome?

In baseball, it’s my injury. I got hurt my first year of pro ball, and I had rehab for a year. I played with pain. That was the first time that I had to play every day through pain. It was humbling. I have a respect for anybody who can play this game for a number of years, because it is such wear and tear on the body. That same year, my grandmother passed, so that was a dark place that I had to get through. Thank goodness for family and for loved ones that helped me make it through.

Do you have a nickname?

I go by J.B. If anybody calls me “J.B.” at a stadium, I have to look because I feel like they know me.

What is your walk-up song at PNC Park?

It’s “Feels Like Summer” [by Childish Gambino]. It’s the instrumental version without the curse words. In Pittsburgh, we play in 40-degree weather for the first month. That song makes me feel like summer.

A LIFE WELL-DRAWN

HOW A JESUIT ALUMNUS WENT FROM PENCIL SKETCHES TO NATIONALLY SYNDICATED AWARD WINNER

Interview by LISA KRESL | Photography by KELSEY SHOEMAKER

EDITORIAL CARTOONIST BILL DEORE surveys his son Pat’s bedroom, where he stores about 4,000 cartoons created during his 34 years at the Dallas Morning News. The plan is to donate the boxes of nationally syndicated work to his alma mater, Texas Tech University. But the natural light in the art studio/living room of his Elderwood house calls him instead. Even though DeOre is retired, he’s still drawing — book illustrations and programs for anything the Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas needs. Jesuit holds a special place in his heart. DeOre found mentors there after his father died in a car wreck, leaving his mother to raise four children. A 1965 graduate, he sent both of his sons, Will and Pat, to the school. “I owe that place a lot,” DeOre says. “It defined the direction I was going to take. I can’t give them money, but I can give my art.”

How did you know that you wanted to draw?

I did it from the time I was little bitty. I just picked up a pencil and started. It’s the only thing I could do really well.

What are your memories of Jesuit?

I was not a good student. I just knew that’s where I needed to be. I didn’t have a dad, and home life wasn’t great. I had a lot of friends that went to Thomas Jefferson High School. I got lucky because I stayed with a new crowd. The other crowd, they’re all dead and in jail. It was a rough crowd, and I was part of that. I always felt like I had a guardian angel. But I had a tough time at Jesuit because I wasn’t a good student. The school didn’t have arts. I felt lucky to graduate. I had an advocate. Father Robert Tynan was the president. I didn’t pay an orientation fee — 20 bucks — in time. The principal was going to use that as an excuse to not invite me back. I was beside myself. I’d been going there for two years. So I just went up there and talked to Tynan. He was smoking a cigarette behind the desk. I said, “This is it for me. I don’t have a dad, and this school’s my life.” He turned and said, “See you Monday.”

How did art influence you at Jesuit? There was no design class, no art class, no nothing. The emphasis was on math, English literature and religion. Now, they’ve got what’s like a mini art school. They have a whole art wing. They have a pottery lab. It’s handled like an elective, but it’s there for you if you want it. It’s an outlet. It’s one more anchor for a kid who is artistic. He can get a beginning there.

How did it feel when your sons went to Jesuit?

When Will was going to school, I’d say, “Will, you’re going to be just fine because you’re not me.” He’s a bright kid, smart, good

looking, great athlete. I said, “You’re going to have a great time here, but you need to watch out for Mr. Robert Eifert because this guy hated me when I was at the school.” After about six months, Will came home and said, “Dad, you know Mr. Eifert?” I said, “Yeah.” He said, “Man, he just loves me. He comes up to me all the time and asks about you. He helps me. He’s great.” Eifert was the closest thing to a human barometer I ever had. When I was good, he was good. I got better and better, and he got better and better.

What was your first job after college?

I freelanced. My rent was 75 bucks a month. I had a $50 a month car payment. I was driving an old Volkswagen. I had a motorcycle. Eventually, I was doing five political cartoons and a sports cartoon a week at the Dallas Morning News. It was a great time to be drawing cartoons in the city, and it was an opportunity to become nationally syndicated. Nobody at the newspaper was syndicated at the time. It was East Coast versus West Coast. I was one of the few conservative cartoonists in the country, and the syndicates needed balance.

What are you working on these days?

I’m doing a deal for Jesuit. Some board members are retiring. When they go, the school wants to give them a gift. They always choose Uncle Billy to do their illustrations. I still do the football, baseball, basketball programs, whatever they need. I even did a T-shirt for water polo. I do work for the auctions. The school is a great endeavor, and I will probably keep helping them until I’m pushing up daisies.

What’s your latest project?

I hooked up with one of Roger Staubach’s daughters, Michelle Grimes. We do a series of children’s books called “Pidge.” That was her mother’s nickname as a child growing up. We started doing this 10 years ago.

What’s your daily routine?

I get up and hit the drawing board early. That’s my most productive time. I have lunch with some buddies once or twice a week when the schedule permits. They’re old dudes like me. I went to Jesuit with a lot of them. Then I ride the bike an hour, every day. That just saves my biscuit. I need the daily workout. Then it’s back to the drawing board.

Do you miss doing editorial cartoons? There’s no forum for it anymore. It’s taxing work. You’re not going to

get paid when you post cartoons on websites like you would by getting paid a salary. For some people, that’s ok. They just want to be out there. But it’s not for me. I still consider myself an earner. I can do so much more. Also, you’re not protected. If someone wants to come after your butt, they can. If I did a cartoon on Laura Miller, anybody like that, they could take me downtown.

What did you do after retiring from the Dallas Morning News?

I had seven motorcycles when I left the News, and I rebuilt them. I had old cars and old motors. I had all these plans. It was supposed to be a plan for retirement. But you never stop doing what you love.

This interview has been edited for clarity and brevity.

PRIME TIME

ONLY PRESTON HOLLOW NEIGHBORS WOULD ORDER STEAK IN A DRIVE-THRU

REGULARS OF BECKS PRIME KNOW THE SECRET.

There’s a place in Preston Hollow that serves a steak worthy of fine china in a drive-thru.

Becks Prime was never meant to be just another fast food joint. The owners wanted to create a place where you could get quality food to-go. It may not be McDonald’s prices but picking up a house ground, mesquite grilled burger without leaving your car is worth a few extra dollars.

“We sell a ton of steaks through the drivethru,” general manager Paul Brittain says when asked if people really order steak to-go. “We

sell a ton of tunas and salads too.”

So how do they make it work? It’s hard to imagine a made-to-order meal coming through the drive-thru without causing a line.

“A lot of people said it couldn’t be done but we figured it out,” Brittain says. “We just do everything in small batches every day.”

Becks isn’t native to Dallas. It’s a transplant business from Houston. When owners first came up north, they had three locations, but the Forest Lane restaurant is the only one left. Brittain credits the success to their regulars. The restaurant has so many passionate

followers that the staff knows the customers by name. Orders are ready when clients get to the counter.

“We have people that’ll eat here every day,” Brittain says. “We have a gentleman that comes and gets a strip dinner at least six times a week. When you find something you like, I guess you stick to it.”

The support of regular customers isn’t the only thing that separates the Forest location from other Becks locations in Houston or Austin. Dallas diners take advantage of Becks’ varied menu. In Houston, the restaurant is known for burgers. In Dallas, the business is known for steaks, fajitas, craft beer, salad, ahi tuna and other delicacies.

“We wanted to make sure that we were able to capture everyone in the family, everyone’s diet profile,” Brittain says.

It may be unorthodox to order madeto-order food to-go, but Becks menu is specially curated to be served in the drivethru. If it doesn’t travel well, owners won’t serve it. Except for French fries, Brittain says.

“Fries don’t travel well, but you can’t have burgers without fries.”

Cindi’s New York Deli and Bakery, now with five locations, is a favorite among Dallasites looking for the authentic flavors of New York. Our menu boasts an array of delicious selections and a great selection of comfort foods.

SERENE SERENDIPITY

How an Uptown couple moved back to the neighborhood and found happiness

june 2019 prestonhollow.advocatemag.com 17

Sandy and Mike Landon did an empty-nesting about face.

After marrying 10 years ago and experiencing a life on St. Michaels Drive, then testing out a four-story townhome on Turtle Creek, the two decided to buy a 3,800-square-foot house on Valley Dale in October 2016. Sandy saw the “coming soon” sign and the couple offered a contract on the house less than 48-hours later. The Landons moved into the 1950s three-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bathroom home in August 2017 after gutting and renovating the structure. The house was recently featured on the Northaven Home Tour, which benefitted Kramer Elementary PTA.

“We wanted a yard for the dogs, a pool and a retreat,” Sandy says.

Mike has two sons, and Sandy has two sons — all in their 30s. The two entertain family and friends frequently. The home’s focus is a kitchen with a quartzite counter. Mike does most of the cooking, but Sandy makes her mark on the space with a giant floral arrangement she designs with succulents, quartz and seasonal flowers. A steel and glass

Designer notebook:

• Shannon Green of Shannon Rae Interiors and Christy Drew of Arveaux Interiors acted as architects and designers, according to Sandy Landon.

• Bar stools are from Scott + Cooner.

• The sofa in the family room is Italian from Arveaux Interiors.

• The dining room chairs are from the Scout Design Studio.

• The powder room sconces are by Kelly Wearstler.

“If you’re going to do something trendy, do it in the powder bath,” Sandy says. “The rest of the house should look timeless.”

cabinet filled with art separates the kitchen from the bar, which used to be a breakfast nook.

“We wanted a big ol’ eat-in kitchen,” Sandy says. “It’s a good party pad.”

A sitting area between the kitchen and the family room welcomes guests with swivel chairs and a cowhide rug. “We sit here all the time,” she says, as a dog naps on the rug at her feet. “We have morning coffee here, look at our iPads, and sit and talk after work with cocktails.”

The round dining room table is the only thing of Mike’s that made the design cut from the couple’s past. He bought the table when he was living in Austin.

The house, which sits on six-tenths of an acre, overlooks a backyard with trees and a pool. The backyard fire pit is “Mike’s happy place.”

When Sandy was sick a year and a half ago and missed a month of work, the couple’s backyard found a new purpose. Doctors couldn’t figure out what was wrong with her as she languished in bed. “The only thing that got me through was this view. It’s so serene.”

MEET THE NEIGHBORHOOD ACTIVISTS WHO REVOLUTIONIZED OUR COMMUNITY

allas observed its first gay pride celebration in June 1972, and the next parade wasn’t until 1980.

While cities across the world observe pride in June to commemorate the Stonewall Riots in New York City, Dallas Pride was always in September to honor a 1982 court ruling against Texas’ anti-sodomy laws. The ruling was later overturned, and consensual sodomy was illegal in Texas until 2003, when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled on it.

The September tradition stuck, however.

While New York, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. got their pride on every June, Dallas collectively experienced FOMO, the fear of missing out.

But not anymore.

The Dallas Tavern Guild, the collective of Oak Lawn business owners who took over what is now the Alan Ross Texas Freedom Parade in 1982, handed the parade over to Dallas Pride, a newly formed nonprofit, last year.

This year, Dallas Pride is in June, and it’s moving from Cedar Springs to Fair Park.

The new setup allows for more parade entries. Previously, Dallas police restricted the parade to 100 because there is a limit on how long the street can be closed.

And Fair Park can accommodate more vendors than Reverchon Park.

The 2019 celebration commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots with the theme “Stonewall strong, Dallas proud.”

In a nod to the new Dallas Pride, we talked to neighbors who were around in the early days of pride and the local LGBTQ struggle.

LGBTQ

ROBERT EMERY

ENTREPRENEUR + STORYTELLER

Robert Emery, 59, knew he was gay at the age of 9 because he wanted to be married to Dick Van Dyke instead of L aura Petrie.

“I wanted that life, that marriage, that living room,” he says of the 1960s TV show. “I was in love with him.”

Emery graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in interior design and from Texas State University with a master’s degree in theater. He and his family traveled on Northwest Highway to Lovers Lane Methodist Church, and he dreamed of living in Preston Tower condominiums. He first lived in the building’s one-room efficiency. Seven apartments and 33 years later, he dwells in the tower’s penthouse.

In addition to owning beauty salons in Preston Tower, Emery is a founder of The Dallas Way, which started in 2011. The organization partners with the University of North Texas library to be the largest repository of LGBTQ history in the Southwest. He also worked to bring Texas’ first LGBTQ Subject Marker awarded by the Texas Historical Commission to Dallas at the intersection of Cedar Springs Road and Throckmorton Street.

“We may have had Oak Lawn in the 1970s and ’80s, but Preston Hollow is like Oak Lawn North. We just live quieter lives,” Emery says. “Preston Hollow for an LGBTQ citizen is fantastic. Dallas is a progressive, open hearted, loving city.”

Emery’s life wasn’t always so peaceful. His family discovered he was gay when he was 19 and his mom overheard him talking on the telephone. “She gave me a toothbrush, opened the front door and pointed toward the street.” He was kicked out of the house. He quickly returned and told her, “I’m not gay. I’m not.” She took him back in.

Ten years later, his mom toured Europe by bus with the Turtle Creek Chorale, Dallas’ primarily gay men’s chorus. She also was one of the group’s largest donors.

“When people say, ‘I don’t know if I should come out.’ I say, ‘Come out today! The sooner the better. The aunt, mother or father that you don’t think is ready will surprise you.’ ”

Emery, who recently returned from the “Queer History

South” convention in Birmingham, Alabama, is writing a 40-minute one-act play for the Dallas Museum of Art’s late night event June 21 on why Judy Garland is a gay icon. He’s also contributing to the Dallas Holocaust Museum’s permanent LGBTQ presentation, which will be unveiled Sept. 17.

Being a self-employed entrepreneur has protected him from workplace discrimination that others face, but he knows what it’s like to be hassled in public for his sexuality. “Lots of gay people can be invisible and blend in, but I don’t,” he says. “I walk in a room and everyone knows I’m gay. I don’t mind that, but it can make me a target.”

Working with the Coalition for Aging LGBTQ is another passion. The non-profit group trains and educates staff at retirement communities. Research shows that 99 percent of gays are not interested in living in a retirement community that’s exclusively LGBTQ, he says. “They just want the world to be culturally competent and fair. That’s the work we do.”

Emery is particularly close to his niece, EmeryAnn, and her children, Finley, 7, and River, 4. Every Tuesday he picks up the kids from school, takes them to the playground and dinner before returning home for bath, pajamas, reading and homework. When the children are asked to draw a picture of their family, they draw a mommy, daddy, brother, sister, uncle and a dog. “I cherish those illustrations of the stick figures with the shining sun and sideways chimney. We’re a family of five.”

The 57-year-old real estate executive is a third-generation Dallasite who graduated from the Greenhill School and studied political science at SMU. His grandfather was on the Dallas Citizens Council and the board of the National Conference of Christians and Jews.

Burk, whose dream as a child was to build big buildings, says his greatest gift is from his 85-yearold father, who taught him to help others.

“My family has a history of involvement in giving back to the community.”

Burk serves on the UT Southwestern Medical Center board, the Cultural Affairs Commission of the City of Dallas, the Oak Lawn Committee, the Dallas Opera board and is a member of The Dallas Assembly, an organization of leaders from Dallas’ business, civic and nonprofit sectors who would like to improve the city. He’s also on the board of the Inwood Northwest Homeowners Association. In 2013, he ran for City Council in District 13 under the slogan “Leland Budget Watchdog Burk,” before losing to Jennifer Staubach Gates.

“Half of my day is occupied by civics, and during the other half I take care of business. I love every minute of it.”

Burk lives with Thomas Feulmer, his partner of 12 years, in a Park Lane home, where he raised three children.

He and his wife married after attending Greenhill

in 1987. He was 43 when he decided to come out even though he worried about how family, friends and business associates would react.

“The greatest lesson is that you shouldn’t live with that kind of fear,” he says. “When you’re candid with the people you care about and who care about you, it’s refreshing. They embraced me.”

In addition to reading two newspapers a day, he enjoys international travel and trips with his family to La Jolla, California, each summer. He also finds himself working seven days a week.

“I’m proud of my part ner,” Burk says. “I’m proud of my relationship with my ex-wife. She’s one of my closest friends. We share every event together. You might say we’re a restruc tured family.”

Asked if he has political aspirations, he says, “I would like to serve. I would like to be remembered as someone who tried to make my community and country a better place. I also want people to know that I lived a life that my family and friends would be proud of.”

CHERYL BERMAN

INSPIRATIONAL INFLUENCER

Cheryl Berman is the woman from ZIP code 75230 who challenged Governor candidate Ann Richards.

The Hillcrest High School graduate attended an event at Lucy Crow Billingsley’s home, where she met Richards in the early 1990s.

Berman stood in the back and then raised her hand after Richards spoke. “If you get elected governor, will you come speak at our Black Tie Dinner?”

Richards won the governor’s race and remembered her promise. Berman says it was one of the most memorable Black Tie Dinners.

Berman was elected to the Black Tie board in 1989 and co-chaired the dinner in 1992 and 1993. The Black Tie Dinner is a charity dinner held each year to raise money for the LGBTQ community. The first dinner was held in 1982.

“Being on the board was one of the most special experiences I ever had. It was a lot of work, but we made lifetime friendships.”

Berman has always been politically active. She recently hosted former Clinton aide and Dallas mayoral candidate Regina Montoya at her home. She worked on Hubert Humphrey’s campaign.

“It’s important to be involved. I don’t understand people who don’t care and especially people who don’t vote.”

Berman graduated from the University of Texas and

24 prestonhollow.advocatemag.com june 2019

then went into the apparel fabrics business, a mostly male-dominated field. She served on the Turtle Creek Chorale board and became one of the first females in Dallas to join a donor arm of the national board for the Human Rights Campaign, the largest LGBTQ advocacy group and political lobbying organization in the United States.

Berman grew to understand in her 20s that she was gay. She didn’t know any gay people. She says she played a lot of tennis. Then, on her 30th birthday, she thought, “I have to do something about this.” She read about a lesbian child custody case and sought out the psychologist who was testifying. After the psychologist said, “Tell me about yourself,” Berman said, “I’m gay and I don’t know anyone else that is.”

The psychologist introduced her to like-minded people, and that became her nucleus.

Berman says she had a girlfriend, and her family always included her if they went to dinner. “I think they knew, but we never talked about it.”

Today, she is open to her family and friends about her sexuality. “I don’t keep anything a secret anymore. I’m totally open about everything.”

Her advice? “Be true to yourself and live your life for you. If you want something, go after it so that you don’t have regrets.”

PIANIST IN THE PARK

BRAD HANSON is best known as the man behind the piano at NorthPark Center. The father of three plays from 5 to 9 p.m. every Friday and Saturday and has filled the center with music for the past 10 years. When he’s not entertaining at NorthPark, he’s teaching private lessons in piano or guitar. Hanson takes on every genre of music, including video game theme songs. He also composes his own music and mashups of songs.

How did you start playing piano?

I grew up the son of a piano teacher and music minister so it was natural for me to gravitate toward music. I started piano young and gradually grew in my dedication to the art form. By the age of 12, I was playing challenging classical pieces. In college, I began playing contemporary worship music, which was a new challenge, and it allowed me to explore using my ear for music. This opened the door for me to start improvising, blending and arranging pieces like I do now.

What do you like about performing music?

I love the ability to create any mood or sound I want. And NorthPark is like a blank canvas for me to do just that. There is freedom to develop a song, repeat something, work two songs together, or add in a request.

How did you get the gig?

I was 22, just married, and I was a pianist for a church at the time. I was approached by NorthPark’s manager because they were looking to revive the live pianist position they had in the past. I agreed to give it a shot. I felt unqualified yet honored. For whatever reason, NorthPark saw something in me and kept me on.

What is your favorite song to play?

My absolute favorite piece is “I Giorni” by Italian pianist Ludovico Einaudi. I really enjoy emotional and profound pieces like soundtracks, post-classical or modern classical instrumentals, a few British artists

(Ed Sheeran and Adele) and the occasional pop song.

What does your piano playing bring to NorthPark?

I hope customers get a sense of peace, that it is a kind of oasis where they can come and slow down for a minute and take in something beautiful and enjoyable.

What are some memorable moments you’ve had while playing at NorthPark?

I’m a dad so it blesses me when kids come dance and move to the music. I’ve been there so long that I have had some kids come back as college students who say they grew up listening to me. I’ve had so many people tell me that they had an awful day or tragedy in their life and that hearing music totally changed their mood. I’ve played for couples dancing, ballerinas, hip-hop dancers, fashion shows, a “Mary Poppins” singalong, “Star Wars” stormtroopers and singers.

Have you met any celebrities while playing?

I’ve met business magnate Ross Perot, gospel singer Kirk Franklin, musician Paul Baloche, the Shane & Shane band and musician Bethany Dillon-Barnard. I’ve played for actor Dennis Quaid, businessman Mark Cuban, former First Lady Laura Bush and several local news anchors and politicians. It’s electrifying and a little scary to play in front of celebrities, but above all else, it’s just cool.

BOOKER T. BROKEN

HOW SUBURBANITES CHEAT THEIR WAY INTO BOOKER T. WASHINGTON HIGH SCHOOL FOR THE PERFORMING AND VISUAL ARTS

“I absolutely see evidence of students who misrepresented their real residence to gain admission to our magnets.”

Stephanie Elizalde, DISD’s chief of school leadership, who oversees instruction at DISD’s 230 campuses

“My passion is that the arts can change young people’s lives.”

Booker T. principal Scott Rudes

LIE ABOUT YOUR HOME ADDRESS. Compel co-workers or friends to put your name on their utility bill. Or just rent an apartment in Uptown for your son or daughter, even if the kid never actually lives there.

Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, the nationally renowned public magnet school, is known for funneling dancers to The Juilliard School, churning out Presidential Scholars in the Arts and grooming music stars, such as Norah Jones and Erykah Badu. The high school is funded by Dallas Independent School District taxpayers and reserved for students who live in the Dallas ISD attendance zone, according to school board regulations.

But Advocate research shows neither campus nor district officials make much of an effort to verify that applicants live where they say they do. And once kids cheats their way into a magnet school, DISD generally doesn’t review their residency again.

Meanwhile, talented DISD hopefuls who live within DISD attendance boundaries are denied entry to the school and left wondering what might have been.

In the wake of the “Aunt Becky” national college cheating scandal, take a look at this year’s freshman recruits to the Booker T. dance conservatory.

In spring 2018, 55 eighth-graders received coveted

“I am Booker T.” acceptance letters. At the time they applied, only 20 were attending a DISD middle school. Another 28 — half of the dancers admitted — were attending public schools in the suburbs, based on their middle school transcripts.

Yet as part of their application paperwork, 53 of the 55 dancers turned in utility bills purporting to live in Dallas.

In fact, all but three of the 227 freshmen in Booker T.’s dance, music, theater and visual arts academies used a Dallas address when they applied. Yet 100 of those students have never attended a DISD middle school, including 39 who attended public middle schools in the suburbs.

Juxtapose that with the 56 DISD students who applied to attend the school and were denied entry in spring 2018, along with another 144

“They get a friend and ask if they can pay their phone bill, and nobody goes deeper. They aren’t paying any taxes. That is not fair. That is straight-up fraud.”

Lisa Ormsbee, whose daughter attended Withers Elementary, E.D. Walker Middle School and Dealey International Academy, then was wait-listed at Booker T. “It’s my job to pull [talent] out of them. They all have it. They just don’t all have the opportunity to have the private dance lessons and tutors and coaching.”

Stephanie Elizalde

DISD students who were rejected as “unqualified” by the magnet school audition judges.

Based on DISD numbers, children from suburban families who ignore the district’s rules have a better chance of gaining access to Booker T. than DISD’s own students.

Sure, it makes Dallas taxpayers proud that one of our public schools annually ranks among the best in the country.

But how proud should we be knowing that every suburban kid taking a spot at our nationally ranked magnet school could be stealing that opportunity from a deserving Dallas kid who played by DISD’s own rules?

And lost.
