Bursting full of personality, femininity and timeless charm, Olivia Burton lovingly creates each timepiece with a meticulous attention to detail. Blending vintage inspirations and fashion forward trends, each stylish watch showcases the brand’s signature style. Think intricate hand-illustrations, beautiful references to nature and must-have colour palettes. Its covetable, collectable styles are inspired by vintage finds and the latest catwalk trends.

Watches strike the hour as accessories BY HEATHER LAURA CLARKE

We used to rely on wristwatches for telling time, and then smartphones came along and said “Nah, we got this.” While it’s true our phones are handy timepieces, they simply can’t replace the good looks and style of a watch. “Watches have become more like another piece of jewelry,” says Christine McCarville, general manager of The Vault. “The right watch really pulls an outfit together.” She scours fashion magazines and social media accounts to find the most swoon-worthy watches for men and women. As a result, The Vault is usually the first shop in Halifax to carry hot brands and new styles. When Olivia Burton watches burst onto the scene – last year they were the No. 1-selling fashion watch line in the U.K. – McCarville was quick to bring in the charming, feminine timepieces. “They’re vintage-inspired with a focus on floral and bee motifs. Customers absolutely love them,” says McCarville. “Often they’ll come in looking for jewelry and

notice her watches, and just fall in love with them.” Some customers prefer the whimsy of Kate Spade watches, with faces decorated with makeup palettes, camels and even peacocks. McCarville’s favourite features a tiny resin martini glass instead of a “5” and a curvy script reading “somewhere” – a playful ode to “It’s five o’clock somewhere.” She says watch-shopping is a tactile experience and it’s difficult to tell what you like until you actually see it on your wrist. Sometimes a face that looks daunting in the display case is striking once it’s in place, and a strap may appear thinner or thicker depending on the size of your wrist. “You need to try on different watches and see how they look and feel. That’s always the deciding factor,” says McCarville. She and her associates at The Vault are happy to remove links to ensure a comfortable fit, but McCarville says that’s becoming less common as top watch brands move towards leather straps.

That trend may be why she’s selling so many Daniel Wellington refined, minimalistic watches – many of them boasting buttery Italian leather straps. “They’re very sleek and their pieces have a timeless feel to them,” says McCarville. She’s noticing a move away from heavy linked bands and toward metal mesh straps. The huge oversized watch faces from a few years back have given way to more modestly sized, slimmer faces. McCarville says most customers want to match the metal of their watch to the jewelry tone they wear most often – gold, silver or rose gold. Of course, in her case, one is simply not enough. “For someone like myself who wears gold, silver and rose gold, it is nice to have a couple of different watch options to match my different jewelry,” says McCarville. Leather straps are made in all colours of the rainbow, and she says matching a strap to your shoes or handbag can be striking – even if it’s not something that happens every day.

Of course, there’s nothing stopping you from owning one to match each pair of shoes in your closet. That’s the beauty of fashion watches. They’re priced so you can feel good about owning a few varieties, and mix them up depending on what you’re wearing. “The great thing about a fashion watch is that you’re not investing tens of thousands of dollars,” says McCarville. “You’re getting a reasonably-priced, well-made, trendy piece, and if the trend changes in a few years, you don’t have to feel bad about getting an upgraded look.” Because a watch is a little more substantial than most bracelets, McCarville says they command attention – and should be treated as the powerhouse accessories they are. “Don’t get stuck on ‘I already have a watch’ because it’s great to have a few options,” says McCarville. “There are so many different looks now, and it’s fun to have different styles to go with whatever look you’re going for that day.”

After being named Jewellery Brand of the Year 2014 at the UK Watch and Jewellery Awards and winning the German Design Award Special 2016, Coeur De Lion has been given another prestigious prize: the German Brand Award 2016. Characterized by opposing forces, the Dean Davidson aesthetic is at once, a study in contrasts and striking the right balance. Whether it’s masculine shapes paired with feminine textures, or architectural lines contrasting fluid gemstones, the common threads found throughout Dean’s signature designs embody an unexpected combination of minimalism with maximum impact. All Dean Davidson jewelry is cast out of high-quality brass and plated in 22kt gold, rhodium or 22kt rose gold. His unique, signature brush finish gives a timeless, luxurious quality to his designs. Each season Davidson chooses a selection of the highest quality gemstones, all custom cut and polished in Jaipur, to further enhance the collection.

Having fun with fashion jewelry BY HEATHER LAURA CLARKE

A new piece of fashion jewelry can refresh an outfit you’ve had for years by giving it a new look, or be the perfect way to add interest to something simple – like a classic LBD. Christine McCarville, general manager of The Vault, says “fashion jewelry” refers to high-quality, handcrafted pieces made using sterling silver, gold vermeil, Swarovski crystal and semi-precious stones. “With fashion jewelry, you can invest in more pieces – giving you the versatility to stay on trend, and to have the perfect piece for every outfit,” says McCarville. McCarville says the layered look is hot right now, and likes wearing several delicate necklaces of different lengths. They might be all gold or all silver, or mixed metals for a more eclectic feel. She loves the simple necklaces from California brand Dogeared, which feature tiny charms and are perfect for layering.

But necklaces aren’t the only things we’re wearing in clusters. McCarville says stacking different bracelets – especially ones with different textures – looks effortlessly stylish. “We’re seeing bangles and link bracelets worn with stretch bracelets, and they really work well together,” says McCarville. “You can mix and match different designer pieces to make a completely individual look.” She says many shoppers are leaning towards gold tones lately, and rose gold is still going strong. Bronzallure’s jewelry is bronze-based and plated in 18K rose gold, and McCarville says their pieces range from “classic to contemporary.” If you want to buy fashion jewelry as a gift for someone in your life, McCarville says it’s best to know in advance whether they prefer to wear gold or silver. (Some people are dedicated to wearing strictly one or the other, while others mix it up depending on their outfit.)

She says it’s The Vault’s variety that keeps her customers coming in regularly. “They’re always telling us they love that we carry jewelry that’s different than anywhere else,” says McCarville. “We bring in pieces from all around the world, and you really can’t find the selection elsewhere in Halifax.” Their carefully curated collection includes colourful Coeur De Lion necklaces (handmade in Germany), Pyrrha talismans cast from wax seals (created from reclaimed metals in Vancouver), and ornate classic Anna Beck jewelry (handcrafted in Bali). As we move into the holiday season, McCarville is already seeing more Vault customers checking out pieces to wear to holiday parties. “Statement earrings are always on trend, especially going into the holiday season,” says McCarville, who says you can’t go wrong with something sparkly or colourful. “They’re that one piece that really stands out and draws attention.”

Typically if you wear a large pair of statement earrings, McCarville says you might tone down the rest of your jewelry to let the earrings be the star. But it’s all about your individual style. She says some ladies love to pair big earrings with a big, dazzling necklace and matching bracelet, and they totally rock it. She believes fashion jewelry is designed to be fun. “Buy what works for you – what suits your personal style,” says McCarville. “You don’t have to be that serious with fashion jewelry. Pick up a fun piece and enjoy wearing it.”
