isle madame On Isle Madame it’s our nature to share with you Thundering waves breaking on rocky shores and sandy beaches. Glittering streams running out of fresh-water lakes. Shaded paths through dark, quiet woodlands. The air and the sea and the woods are alive with osprey, eagles, seals, foxs, clams, deer, mussels, otters, gannets, whales, wild apple and cherry trees, Queen Anne’s lace and pitcher plants. Explore our many trails providing kilometres of self guided hiking through uninhabited terrain, including woods, wetlands, coastal habitats and ocean views. Isle Madame is not one island, but many a spangle in the sea, an intricate tracery of islets and inlets. Red headlands, green moors and yellow marches. Endless miles of varied and pristine shoreline. Waterways beckoning to paddlers. Shorelines and back roads beckoning to bikers. Beaches beckoning to surfers. The Acadians, the Irish, the Channel Islanders and the Basques have been here for 350 years. Sea people, all of them, traders and the fishermen who have always lived by the water. They remember sea battles and invasions, wealth and influence, shipwrecks and disasters. The Islanders once built glorious wooden ships in Isle Madame’s protected harbours and sailed to Naples, Dakar, Rio. Today many sail for pleasure, and their wharves and marinas welcome visiting sailors from around the world. (The danger, say the visitors, is that once having come here, you may never leave.) Savour the island’s food, its architecture, its traditions, its music and its crafts. Sample the history and culture of the Acadian people at La Picasse Acadian cultural centre. Attend a festival in one of the Isle Madame villages, with concerts and contests, dances and dunk tanks. Stay in one of Isle Madame’s cozy inns or bedand-breakfasts. Enjoy the food and stay for the ambiance. And then step back into nature.

Potlotek First Nation THE HEART OF MI’KMA’KI Potlotek (pronounced: bod-lo-deck) is the authentic gathering territory of the Mi’kmaq people. Bordering the beauteous Bras d’Or Lake, it boasts natural attraction and exhales salt-infused air. This is especially true during the Fishing Derby held in Potlotek on Father’s Day weekend. To further immerse yourself within Potlotek’s culture, you can partake in our Powwow in July. Here, you can lay your eyes on the colourful pageantry of traditional and modern regalia. If your heart chooses to align with the beat of the drum, indulge your soul and join us in the arbour! People of Potlotek have been welcoming out-of-towners, family, and friends, since 1742. It was during this year that missionary priest Father Maillard said his first mass on Mniku. Mniku (pronounced: min-e-goo) is a spiritual island adjacent to Potlotek First Nation. The pilgrimage to Mniku, honours our patron saint, St. Anne, through multiday mass services and a procession of prayer. More than THREETHOUSAND people attend the four-day mission of St. Anne! Join us in July as we continue to CELEBRATE this timehonoured event. Here in Potlotek, we understand how much energy is required to fish, dance, and sing. We encourage you to visit Potlotekewey Expedition to recharge, fuel up, and satisfy your hunger with our large variety of snacks and beverages.

CAPE BRETON CAPES, KEYS & COVES CAP BRETON

HISTORY & ATTRACTIONS Greatly influenced by the Acadian, Irish, Mi’kmaq and Scottish heritage that built the region, Cape Breton’s South Coast brims with history and heritage waiting to be discovered. Enjoy fresh, local seafood in a place where the fishery is part of our heritage. Camp near historic St. Peter’s Canal, walk, cycle or kayak to a lighthouse, learn about the past at our museums, or visit one of our 19th Century churches. Cape Breton’s South Coast boasts many accessible lighthouses and prominent churches. Our Lady of Assumption Church in Arichat is the oldest surviving Roman Catholic church in Nova Scotia. Arichat also is the first seat of the Catholic diocese in the region and the birthplace of St. Francis Xavier University. With a boulder as his pulpit, Father Maillard said the first mass on Chapel Island in 1742. The first chapel was built on the island in the early 1750s. An annual Chapel Island mission celebrates the history of this sacred place. St John’s Anglican Church was built for the Channel Island and Scottish population on Isle Madame. The present church, built in 1895, is closed at this time. St. Peter’s (Port Toulouse) began as a fur-trading outpost in 1650. Its story parallels the fortunes of Fortress Louisbourg and includes Mi’kmaq, French, English and Irish history. St. Peter’s Canal, opened in 1869, is now a Parks Canada National Historic Site. The canal is a waterway from the Atlantic Ocean to the beautiful UNESCO Bras d’Or Lake Biosphere. Three museums are found in the village of St. Peter’s. MacAskill House Museum, the birthplace of Wallace MacAskill, a renowned Nova Scotia photographer, showcases many of his photographs. Nicholas Denys Museum celebrates the lives of the early settlers to this area. The Wildlife Museum has a variety of unique specimens. The St. Peter’s Canal celebrated its 150th Anniversary in 2019. The Canal, which is a waterway from the Atlantic Ocean to the beautiful Bras d’Or Lake, was completed in 1869 and is now a Parks Canada National Historic Site. Isle Madame’s heritage is bound by water. Visit LeNoir Forge Museum, a remnant of the days of wooden ships and canvas sails when the Port of Arichat was considered one of the most significant on the eastern seaboard. The Acadian community of Petit de Grat owes its name to the fishery. ‘Grat’ is a Basque word meaning ‘fishing station’ referring to one of the oldest fishing outposts in North America. The Acadian cultural centre, La Picasse, is located in Petit de Grat. The history and heritage of lighthouses, sailing ships and fisheries, the balance of French Acadian and English languages, and the relaxed lifestyle inspire the musicians and artisans who live and work here. CAPE BRETON CAPES, KEYS & COVES CAP BRETON

enjoy the outdoors Natural. Beautiful. Honest. Real...that’s how it’s always been. We have not changed much with our language still bearing the sounds of our ancestors, the Acadian, Irish, Scots and Mi’kmaq. And our land is largely as it always was. People show pictures of their grandparents as children hoping to locate their favourite hideaways, and they do find them. A place where sunsets and sunrises are unobscured, only the sea and the sky wait in anticipation of the new day with the sun slowly cresting and bursting into rays of colour and light. A place where the water shapes the land in an endless balance with nature and where the sound of sea birds brings us back to the days of our childhood. A place where you can drop a line and catch a fish. A place where history abounds and many firsts took place. You can still find quiet corners to call your own. Yet you can always find a friendly smile and a helping hand. The summer’s fishing fleet is hard to miss with the hum of motors on the water as the day breaks. Its fresh bounty is there to enjoy with your favourite wine at day’s end. Any day of the week. Try something new, it’s never too late. Kayaks, paddleboards, SUPS and even fishing rods are available for some long overdue family fun. Take in some outdoor tunes with local musicians or go wild in a frenzy of sand creativity. Or just take a book to the beach and let your mind unwind. It’s nature’s paradise and it’s waiting. That’s the Capes, Keys & Coves promise. And it’s our nature to share it with you.

Experiential Tourism Don’t just stand on the sidelines… come be part and take part in what’s going on. Visit a lighthouse up close and learn about its past, learn to garden or tend to a farm, sail our waters or kayak our shores. Experience our blacksmithing past in our historical working forge or scuba dive the wreck of the Arrow. Learn a traditional craft, play an instrument at a kitchen party or fish off the canal. Pick your own sweet grass and learn to weave. Take a pottery class, learn to fuse glass or charter a sailboat. Local festivals provide stories of our seafaring past, our history, culture, music and traditional foods. Thrill to the sound of the fiddle while soaring eagles guard our shorelines. Spectacular hiking is available year-round. Sunrise and sunset are spectacular here. See nights as brilliant as nature intended and enjoy stargazing during clear skies.

Exquisite sunrises to the east and equally beautiful sunsets to the west. Park your vehicle anywhere, walk to your chosen spot and wait for the show to begin... The Acadian culture thrives here and in the coastal communities of Petit de Grat, L’Ardoise, River Bourgeois and Sampsonville. Mi’kmaq, Irish, and Scottish culture are equally intertwined. At our heart is the Bras d’Or Lake, North America’s largest inland sea. Sail, kayak, fish or swim its pristine waters. Hike our boreal forests and endless coastlines. Come play on our island within an island, Isle Madame is known as ‘Isle of a 100 Coves’ with its breathtaking coastal beauty everywhere. A true photographer’s delight where the locals welcome you as long-lost friends. The Acadian culture thrives here and in the coastal community of L’Ardoise.

CANAL LANDING

STARRY SKY, POINT MICHAUD

PHOTO: @OUISURF

Come Stargaze with Us See the stars and the moon twinkle in the night sky as you have never seen them before. Our low light pollution ensures dark skies so, on a clear night, lay back and enjoy.

STORM WATCHERS • CHASSEURS DE TEMPÊTES Carved by nature’s majestic forces... Surrounded by water. Raw unprotected land jutting into the open sea. Whipped by gale force winds and shaped by the depths of the ocean’s fury. Dress warm, find a vantage point, step outside and be prepared for an awe-inspiring experience. We are fast becoming Atlantic Canada’s ‘Storm Watch Destination’. Best times to view storms are October/November and February/March. Look for icons on our map to locate the best vantage points. A soul inspiring sense of being one with nature...
