Living in a beautiful area where I can enjoy creation to its fullest. Being active ... walking, hiking, biking. Cranberry Cove Ferry The Cranberry Cove Ferry departs from the UPPER TOWN DOCK at 110 Clark Point Rd. in Southwest Harbor. The ferry then stops at the Manset Dock owned by Cranberry Isles (C.I. dock), before departing for the Cranberry Isles. Below is the schedule for July and August. involvement. Programs like the Island Explorer’s fare-free bus service, which helps reduce traffic and emissions on Acadia’s winding, scenic roadways. Programs like Wild Acadia, building a more resilient ecosystem through invasive plant management, water-quality monitoring, raptor research, and more. Programs like Acadia Trails Forever, which maintains, restores, and extends Acadia’s historic Building Building Cairns Cairns hiking trail system. Programs like FOA’s youth internships, which solve problems today by putting teens and young adults to work on pressing issues throughout the park and solve problems tomorrow by building the next generaCairn on Champlain tion of park stewards. When hiking, look up and down for blue trail blazes and cairns marking the trails. Do not modify or build new cairns - they are specifically built by volunteers. Changes to trail markers endanger other hikers.

Friends of Acadia volunteers make a difference for Acadia by contributing thousands of hours of labor each year to trail maintenance and trail-building, carriage road maintenance, gardening in the one-of-a-kind Wild Gardens of Acadia, grooming the carriage roads for cross-country skiing in winter, contacting their legislators about issues that affect the park, picking up trash on Acadia-area shorelines and roadsides, and, for the past few years, helping to plan Acadia’s 2016 centennial celebration. Volunteers also serve on internal FOA

committees and lend a hand in the office, all of which helps the organization to operate more effectively and efficiently. There are many ways that you can be a “friend of Acadia” and give back to this amazing place that gives us so much. Membership starts at $35 per year per household. You’ll receive FOA’s beautiful and informative membership magazine, the Friends of Acadia Journal, three times per year; you can also sign up for our monthly E-News for regular updates on park and FOA happenings. Volunteering is easy! On Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings from June through October, FOA leads drop-in volunteer projects on Acadia’s trails and carriage roads. There are always several projects to choose from, with something appropriate for all ages and levels of experience. No need to call ahead— just show up at 8:20 a.m. at the park headquarters on the Eagle Lake Road (Rt. 233) outside Bar Harbor. (We do ask that groups larger than 5 volunteers call 288-8716 in advance, to help plan appropriate projects.) Come dressed for the weather with closed-toe shoes and bring work gloves, if you have them.

Friends of Acadia’s two big volunteer events each year are the Earth Day Roadside Cleanup (the last Saturday in April) and Take Pride in Acadia Day (the first Saturday in November). And if you have more time or expertise to commit, other FOA volunteer committees are open to all. Acadia National Park was the first national park initially created by private donations of land and the individual efforts of many foresighted and committed individuals. This legacy of private philanthropy for a public treasure is carried on today by the members and volunteers of Friends of Acadia. If you love Acadia, we invite you to be a part of it! Friends of Acadia and the Acadia Centennial Four years ago, Friends of Acadia and Acadia National Park realized that if we wanted to celebrate Acadia’s 100th birthday fittingly, it was time to start planning! Since then, Friends of Acadia has provided organizational structure and staff support for the Acadia Centennial celebration. Together with the National Park Service, we founded the Acadia Centennial Task Force, which has recruited partners from throughout Maine to plan events and programs, design and sell products to honor the centennial, and provide financial support for critical public engagement tools like the centennial logo, website, marketing, and pins, product tags, and window stickers for Acadia Centennial Partners—now numbering more than 350—to use in GREAT CRANBERRY ISLAND showing their support. CRAB CAKES INGREDIENTS 2 pounds crab meat 2 eggs 1 cup red onion, finely diced 1 cup red pepper, finely diced 1/2 cup mayo 2 Tbsp. Dijon mustard 4 Tbsp. panko bread crumbs

INSTRUCTIONS

Thoroughly mix all ingredients by hand in a large metal bowl. Form into 2 oz. cakes.

INGREDIENTS 1/4 cup butter 1/2 cup brown sugar 1 loaf day-old crusty bread 6 eggs 2 cups milk 1 tsp. vanilla craisins and nuts, if desired INSTRUCTIONS

Melt butter in the bottom of a pan large enough to hold your slices of bread (9 x 13 usually works fine) and stir in the brown sugar. Lay the slices of bread on top of the butter/brown sugar mixture and top with craisins and nuts, if desired.

Beat the eggs, milk and vanilla. Pour over the bread. Bake at 350° for 45 minutes. Drizzle melted butter on top before baking, if desired. Serve with maple yogurt. Leslie Watson, Moorings Inn

BAKED EGGS IN PUFFED PASTRY INGREDIENTS 1 10x10” sheet puff pastry, thawed 4 medium eggs 2 tsp. butter, melted & divided 2 tsp. heavy cream, divided Kosher salt & fresh ground pepper Cheese and fillings of your choice, about 1 cup total * INSTRUCTIONS

Set rack in top 1/3 of oven prior to pre-heating to 400°. Roll out pastry on floured surface. Cut pastry sheet into 4 equal squares (approx 5”x 5” each). Liberally spray muffin pan corner cavities & top edges. Lay one pastry square centered in a corner cavity of deep muffin pan. Lift 4 points while pushing the dough into bottom of cavity, folding sides where they overlap between points. Repeat with remaining dough into remaining corners. Fill pastry squares 3/4 full with cheese and fillings, then top each with whisked egg, 1/2 tsp. butter, 1/2 tsp. cream and dash of salt and pepper, then more cheese. Bake until puffed and nicely browned about, 20 minutes – cover loosely with foil about halfway through to prevent overbrowning of pastry tips. Serve over warmed greens. Yield: 4.

SHRIMP CASSEROLE INGREDIENTS 8 slices of bread, cubed and buttered (can use white, French, oatmeal) 3/4 lb. of sharp cheese, grated 2 cups of milk 3 eggs 1/2 tsp. mustard dash of paprika 1 lb. of raw Maine shrimp, peeled/shelled 2/3 cups sliced mushrooms salt and pepper to taste

INSTRUCTIONS Spread half the bread in the bottom of a greased casserole dish (13x9x2). Layer shrimp, mushrooms, and half of the cheese. Add the remaining bread and cheese on top.

VEGAN BROCCOLI “CHEESE” SOUP

INGREDIENTS 4 cups vegetable stock 1 2/3 cup carrot, chopped 1 1/2 cup raw potato, chopped 1 cup onion chunks 1/2 cup RAW cashews 4 cups fresh broccoli, in bite-size pieces (or 1 lb. frozen)

INSTRUCTIONS Cook the carrot, potato, and onion in the vegetable stock until softened (about 15 minutes).

Put the raw cashews into the blender and add stock and cooked vegetables. Blend for five minutes. If you can’t add all the stock and cooked vegetables in at one time, divide it into batches, making sure to blend each batch for five minutes. Add salt to taste

Meanwhile, cook the broccoli until crisp-tender. I cook it in the microwave for about 2 1/2 minutes. Reheat the broth and add the broccoli. Christina Boucher, Bayside Graphics

GALYN’S BUTTERNUT SQUASH CAKES INGREDIENTS 14 oz. butternut squash, cubed 1 Tbsp. brown sugar 1/2 tsp. cinnamon 1 Tbsp. olive oil 14 oz. chickpeas, rinsed and drained 1/3 cup cornmeal + extra for coating 1 Tbsp. garam masala 1 tsp. cumin 1 Tbsp. finely chopped garlic 1 Tbsp. fresh lemon juice 1/2 cup loosely packed chopped cilantro 2 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. black pepper

INSTRUCTIONS Toss squash with olive oil, brown sugar, cinnamon and roast at 375° until soft, but not mushy (about 30-45 minutes).

Mix all ingredients (including cooked squash), breaking the chickpeas up a bit. Form into 2 oz. patties. Coat sides with cornmeal. Bake at 400° or cook in a skillet with olive oil until browned. Makes about 15 patties. Gail Leiser, Galyn’s

INSTRUCTIONS Preheat oven to 400°. Coat beets in EVOO; place on foil lined baking sheet. Roast in oven until beets are tender (when a sharp knife can be inserted easily). Cool beets and peel.

was $33.50. The choices (when we took the trip) for departing Southwest Harbor are 7 and 10 AM and returning from Little Cranberry Island to Southwest Harbor are 2 and 5 PM. Please doublecheck the ferry schedules. They may change throughout the year!. Because of these ferry schedules, you will need to tailor your activity to accommodate the times. I will say, we attempted this during the summer with my son, daughter-in-law and their two young children (four and two at the time). It included bike rentals (see the index starting on page 59), which might be something that YOU will need as well! We found that with the young ones, one island was enough of a day. But we all had a blast! They were not interested in the views, but loved throwing rocks from the shore into the ocean.This article is based on when the two of us went in early fall. You will park your car at the Southwest Harbor Upper Town Dock on the Clark Point Road. To catch the 7:00 AM ferry, we recommend that you arrive at the parking lot for the dock at 6:45, and 9:45 for the 10:00 AM boat. This will give you time to unload your bikes from their rack and bring them and your other gear down the long ramp, to the end of the dock. If it is low tide, the ramp is rather steep. As for gear, we recommend sunglasses, sunscreen,

after 7:00 AM, so we ended up inside, except to take pictures. Be sure to hold on to your ferry ticket as you will need to board the ferry two more times. As we sailed toward Great Cranberry Island, we stopped at the Manset dock at 7:15. This spot offers an unparalleled view up Somes Sound, as well as the boats in the harbor and Greening Island, at the mouth of the sound. Heading across Western Way, (the western corridor of water to open ocean from this area), we approached Great Cranberry Island. The views of Mount Desert Island from the open water are outstanding. We arrived at the Great Cranberry Island dock at 7:35. After unloading our bikes, we headed up the docks and ramps to the terra firma of Great Cranberry Island. The area around the town dock is a lively place. There were many vehicles, whose owners had driven down to take the ferry to either Islesford or MDI. There is also the Cranberry General Store & Seawich Café, which is the center of life for “downtown” Great Cranberry Isles. We stayed at this location for a few minutes to check out the general store. We also got a small map of the island. While we were getting back on our bikes, one of the locals said, “Oh, you must be here for the million dollar view!” We told her we didn’t know what she was talking about, to which she replied that we “would know it when we saw it”.

Pedaling up Great Cranberry Road that climbs a small incline before turning left and leveling out, you soon enter the cultural center of this island. At 1/2 mile from the town dock, you come upon the Cranberry House Museum and Hitty’s Café on the right. Just a little further is the Great Cranberry Congregational Church and the Great Cranberry Library and Longfellow School on the right and a gift shop and art gallery on the left. The Longfellow School is the island’s elementary and middle school. Great Cranberry Road continues for another 1.5 miles and passes over lovely island countryside. You will see on the right the rolling, rising vegetation of The Heath. This term, “The Heath,” is a widely used term in the northeast to describe a large area of somewhat level, open land usually with poor coarse soil, inferior drainage, and a surface rich in peat or peaty humus. We see a Heath as the northern equivalent to a southern swamp, unfriendly to humans, but ideal for local wildlife. Usually a “Heath” is not navigable, but small log walkways, laid end to end, can penetrate the interior of these unique microenvironments. Absent of the required walkways and trail work, it did not seem practical to venture into this particular Heath. Further on to the left, the “million dollar view” appears. Beyond a lovely, evergreen-bordered meadow, the mountains of eastern Mount Desert Island are perfectly framed. From left to right are Parkman, Cedar Swamp, Sargent, Penobscot, The Bubbles, Pemetic and Cadillac Mountains. The Bubbles, North and South are particularly striking, nestled between the higher peaks on the east and west. As often is the case, a picture doesn’t do it justice!

Great Cranberry Road continues with open vistas to the Northeast of The Pool on the left. This enclosed area of ocean water is almost a pond with the northward curl of Great Cranberry and a couple islands almost encircling the water. This area between Great Cranberry and Little Cranberry Islands appears to be a prime area for sea kayaking. The tight channel of water between the two islands is called The Gut. We will leave it up to you to research this term. The road ends at a private residence. This is another excellent view of the pool, but please respect the property owner and do not linger at this location. Certainly do not cross the gates in this location. The remainder of the landmass, winding around to the left, is apparently not accessible to the public. At this point, you should turn around. Heading back, at about 1/4 mile the Cranberry Shores Trail leaves on the left. This nice half-mile walk, maintained by Maine Coast Heritage Trust, leads to a beautiful, rocky shore. On our outing, the surf was pretty lively and the strong morning sun illuminated the crashing waves.

Heading back to Great Cranberry Road, you will continue back in the direction of the town dock. In another mile, you will take a right on The Lane. This half mile long road descends to the shore with a nice view of The Pool. Heading back up to the main road, take a right and proceed to The Cranberry House Museum and Hitty’s Café. This is a good opportunity to check out the museum and café and perhaps take in a longer walk down the Trail to Whistler’s Cove. This is about a one-mile trail over many of the before mentioned log walkways and leads to a lovely seashore. The stones on this beach are a little smaller than those of the Cranberry Shores Trail. When we came with the family during the summer, this is where we came for a picnic lunch. The grandkids liked walking through the woods, balancing on the log walkways; and, as mentioned before, they loved the rocky beach! We consider this or the other walk on the Cranberry Shores Trail to be optional. You must consider the ferry schedule and be ready to leave for Little Cranberry at 10:40 or 1:40. This gives you 3 hours on this island. Because it is shorter, and because we really liked the wild surf, we recommend The Cranberry Shores Trail and only do the Whistler’s Cove Trail if you are making good time. But they both have unique qualities, and it depends on your preference and timing! We also recommend that you arrive back at the dock 10 minutes before your ferry is scheduled to depart. The ferry trip to Little Cranberry Island is about a 20-minute trip. We won’t repeat the loading and unloading details but it should get easier as the day goes by. As you arrive in Islesford, (the town on Little Cranberry Island), you will notice that this island is different from Great Cranberry. There is a surprising presence of lobster traps and gear in many places. When we arrived in Islesford, we wrote down, “this is a purely, authentic, fishing island.” Cont’d. p. 44 Live

We recommend that you travel up the hill to the Islesford Historical Museum managed by Acadia National Park. This museum has fascinating insight into “Island Life” in northeastern North America; you will want to see the Boats and Bouys exhibit, which is all about the lobster fishermen. The National Park Staff on location are a good source of information about the island. In this area, there are also public restrooms, the Islesford Dock restaurant, and other shops. Head up Main Street and just after the Islesford Congregational Church, turn left on Mosswood Road. On the left is the Islesford Neighborhood House and Library. Check out the Library. The librarian on duty is also a good source of local information. For $1.00, you can get a good map of the island (highly recommended). Returning back down to Main Street, turn left and pass the General Store, Post Office, and The Ashley Bryan School, the local elementary and middle school. There is no high school on Little or Great Cranberry Islands. Island high school students have several choices: they can choose to commute to high school by ferry (difficult, but some do); live on MDI while attending high school; or use the town stipend to go towards attending a boarding school. Shortly after, on the left, is the local Catholic Church and a cemetery. Just after this, bear left on the North Wood Road. After sharp left and right turns, you will look for a “right of way” on the left, just after a log cabin. This little road descends quickly down to the shore. You will know you are in the right place if there is a residence on your left where the road ends. Park your bike off to the side and walk down to the shore. This is Bunker’s Cove. With a view much like “the million dollar view” on Great Cranberry Island, this is a great place for a picnic. There are residences close by so keep your noise at a reasonable level. As you go back to your bike and climb back up to the North Wood Road, take a right and go back to Main Street. Take a left on Main Street, and then another left on Bar Road. Pedaling past homes with much fishing gear around them, you will descend to the shore. Take a left on the gravel Coast Guard Road, (no street sign), and proceed parallel to the wall of rocks the sea has piled up 8 to 10 feet high. This wall obscures your view of the water so you might want to pull over and “climb” the wall to get your bearings. The panoramic view is outstanding. To the right, the rocky shore curls around to the left to include Maypole Point and further in the distance, one side of the landmass that forms The Pool on Great Cranberry. To the left, the shore curls around to the right and includes the old Coast Guard station, which is now a private residence. Further on, Baker Island connected to Little Cranberry Island by a bar, finishes almost a visual half-circle as you look out to the open ocean. The old Coast Guard station has a very long and interesting history. The station was authorized as a lifesaving station by the act of June 18, 1878. According to some, this was the start of today’s United States Coast Guard. In the 19th century, the Life-Saving Service would go out in storms in small boats to rescue people whose ships were in distress. It was merged with the Revenue Cutter Service in 1915 to form the United States Coast Guard. The station was

consolidated with the Southwest Harbor Coast Guard Station in 1946. This station is still operational and is further down on the Clark Point Road in Southwest Harbor from the ferry parking area. Baker Island is another intriguing place. The island was settled by the Gilley family in 1806. The lighthouse was built in 1828 to guide mariners away from the sandbar and ledges nearby. Over the years, the Lighthouse and surrounding area was granted to the U. S. Government, and the Gilley family retained the rest of the island. The Lighthouse was deactivated from 1955 to 1957, and is now solar powered. There is more information about Baker Island on www.nelights.com/ exploring/Maine/baker_is_light.html. There is also a book about one of Baker Island’s inhabitants, John Gilley, One of the Forgotten Millions by Charles Eliot, published by Acadia Publishing Company and sold at local bookstores. You can continue along the road, but remember to stop short of the old Coast Guard station, to give the owners their privacy. Returning from this area, you will turn back on the Coast Guard Road. Turning right on the Bar Road, you will cross Main Street and keep to the left on the Bar Road until it meets with Main Street near the Mossword Road. Shortly after joining Main Street, you will again come upon the Islesford Congregational Church. We found the Church unlocked and went inside. This is a lovely, old church with fine wood and beam work. Also of note are the stained glass windows created and donated by local artist, author, storyteller, and musician, Ashley Bryan.

Practically across Main Street from the church, Maypole Road leaves to the left. The Maypole Road is about a 1 mile round trip to Maypole Point which is worth the ride. You do want to consider the time about now. The ferry leaves Islesford at 2:00 and 5:00 PM. On our trip, it was a bit after 1:00 when we were at this point. We wanted to catch the 2:00 PM ferry but felt we had the time. So we headed down the road.

The Maypole Road first goes by the town field and picnic area on the right. The road is out in the open most of the time with high, bush vegetation on the sides in stretches. You will go by many boathouses on the right, then a cemetery for some of the early settlers on the left. The road winds a bit and then climbs a bit to a point where the view to the right of Great Cranberry and â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Gutâ&#x20AC;? are very nice. In a couple more turns, you will come upon a a private residence. We parked our bikes a ways back from the house and followed an open area to the left of the house. This leads to the shore and another great view. To the left, the long shoreline of Gilley Beach, the Coast Guard Road where you were earlier, the bar and Baker Island form a long, sweeping view of a remote bay. Straight ahead, you will see a few small islands. One of these is called Seal Rocks and here is where the binoculars would come in handy. We did not have any, but it seemed that there were more than a dozen seals out there. Heading back to the town pier, you will board the ferry and head back to Southwest Harbor with a stop at Great Cranberry Island. We hope you enjoy your bike trip to the Cranberry Isles.
