TURTLE NESTING IN FULL SWING

L

ady Elliot Island is a significant nesting location for Green and Loggerhead Turtles. Nesting season normally occurs between November to February, with hatchlings emerging from January to March. Nesting can occur anywhere around the island but the majority of nests have been recorded in the sand dunes in front of the resort and either end of the airstrip. The nesting process can take between 2 - 8 hours depending on the turtle species and how quickly a suitable nesting site is located. If the female turtle considers the nesting site unsuitable, it will move to another location.

Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort has launched a 2 night turtle package, valid for travel from 28 January to 31 March 2020. Aptly named ‘Turtley Amazing!’, this is a great time to visit Lady Elliot Island if you love turtles as much as we do!

Photographs and videos of manta rays are particularly needed for this project to be successful. Photos are utilised for photo-identification of manta rays and are integrated in a major photographic database which includes all pictures of manta rays recorded around the Australian coastline. Share you photos with Project Manta and if a new manta is identified from your shots, you will get to NAME YOUR OWN MANTA.

ady Elliot Island is known as ‘Home of the Manta Ray’ and these giant kites of the sea can be seen feeding around the island throughout the year but aggregate in larger numbers during the winter months. The manta ray is the world’s largest ray, with a wing span of up to seven meters.

Manta alfredi, the species found on Lady Elliot island, is known to occur off both the western and eastern Australian coasts. Early data from Project Manta showed that manta rays travel a distance of at least 500km between Lady Elliot Island in Queensland and Byron Bay in New South Wales within few months. Project Manta visit Lady Elliot Island twice a year as part of their multidisciplinary study of manta rays, established in 2007, that aims to provide much needed biological and ecological information on the species in Australian waters. On these expeditions the team will conduct research which includes photographing, observing and recording manta ray behaviour. In the lab, they identify individual

Try mindful meditation

Being mindful is Step #5 of the @discovering_the_best_ you “Mind Your Health” program.

If you’re ready to go a little deeper into developing your mindfulness, consider mindful meditation. To do this, sit quietly with your eyes closed and focus on your breath, or on a word or a phrase that you repeat quietly. Allow your thoughts to come and go, and try not to follow them. When your mind starts to wander, gently lead it back to your breathing, or to the word or phrase you’ve chosen.

MINDFULNESS simply means paying attention to the present moment. Practicing #mindfulness can help you to cope with everyday life and deal with tough times. It can also help you to concentrate, relax and be more productive. Here are some different ways you can build mindfulness, plus tips on what to do if you’re finding it hard.

You can practise mindful meditation by yourself, or you can use an app (such as Headspace or Smiling Mind) if you want some guidance. If you find your mind wandering, it doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong. It just means you have a normal human mind!

Helpful tips * Don’t expect to be able to hold your focus for very long, especially when you’re just getting started. * It’s completely normal for your thoughts to wander. * The goal isn’t to have a totally ‘blank’ mind; it’s more about noticing and gently guiding your mind back when your thoughts do wander. * The more you practice mindfulness, the better you’ll become at it.

Focus only on the present moment You can develop mindfulness during regular activities such as when walking, driving or even brushing your teeth. The key is to try and focus only on the present moment and not pay too much attention to your thoughts about the past or the future. Ask yourself what is happening for you right now. Is your breathing slow or fast? Are you tired? Are you hungry? How do you feel?
