MAYOR’S MESSAGE Taking our city beyond GC2018 One of the biggest challenges our city faces is making the most of the 2018 Commonwealth Games - long after the events have been run and won. Legacy outcomes are crucial and we need to seize every one of them. Right now, we are installing a fibre optic cabling system that will be 10 times faster than the NBN. For many years, access to world leading IT and fibre optics has held our city’s e-commerce back -– but not for long. By December this year, we will have laid around 45km of the world’s best high speed fibre optic along the light rail route, and even further south to Coolangatta. This will be an absolute game changer for large businesses, research companies, medical science and technology start-ups to seriously look at our city. The speed of the data, particularly around 1km either side of the light rail spine, will be absolutely world class. I know of businesses, with an eye to the future, who are looking at relocating their services here to take advantage of the fibre optic system. That will mean jobs for today’s, and tomorrow’s, Gold Coasters which is a great legacy outcome.

The Audi A5 Coupé The A5 has long been known as the first step into sport with the Audi model range. The gateway to power and prowess the A5 has always been synonymous with style. After 10 years the second generation model has been a long time coming but well worth the wait. The all-new A5 coupe has hit the streets with Audi’s hallmark combinations of technology and luxury. The new model retains its forerunner’s seamless silhouette but adds more angles, has a lower definition bonnet, raises the headlights and has a more severe aesthetic. Touting luxe lines and sporting finesse it is definitely a head turner.
With the finer details on the new A5 Coupe enticing, from the ultra-thin LED brake light strip above the rear windscreen, to the new “tornado line” that runs along the car’s flanks. The wider, bolder grille is boss and the way the indicators pulse is pretty special too. The second-generation car starts with the A5 1.8 TFSI that is priced at $68,200, coming with a 1.8-litre and front-wheel drive, while the A5 3.0 TDI Quattro tops out at $107,155, coming with a turbocharged V6 and all-wheel drive. Want to find out more? They say the best way to experience an Audi is from behind the wheel so why not contact the team at Audi Centre Gold Coast today on 07 5609 8063.

GOLD COASTERS 9 PEOPLE DRIVING CREATIVIT Y AND INNOVATION
The Gold Coast is a city with big personality and big ambition, powered by an energy that makes it one of Australia’s most vibrant communities. People are attracted to it, and bring their own energy to produce a potent mix of creativity, innovation and enthusiasm. It is this vision and ambition that has built this great Australian city into what it is today. Here are some of the key contributors to the city’s ambitious determination.
TOM TATE Mayor
LOUISE BEZZINA Artistic Director
GREG YOUNG Business Director
If the Gold Coast is a true reflection of Australia’s youthful drive and energy, then its Mayor Tom Tate is a great example of the can-do spirit that is transforming the city into an economic and cultural powerhouse. A successful businessman, he is unashamedly pro-business and pro-Gold Coast. A civil engineer by trade, he is a father of four and can speak fluent Thai and Laotion. His philosophy is simple: “Business growth, job creation and strong families are all linked together. I try to give this message every chance I get,” he says.
Louise Bezzina is credited with being the inaugural director and creator of the Gold Coast’s highly successful Bleach* Festival. “The Gold Coast is the most exciting place to be working and making art right now,” she says. “The sector is growing rapidly and the excitement and appetite from the locals for more interesting experiences grows every day.” In her role as Artistic Director for Bleach* Festival, Louise is part of the creative lead team for the GC2018 Arts and Cultural Program. “I feel privileged to be part of this movement.”
Greg Young started Body Science International 18 years ago in the garage of his home on the Gold Coast. Today it is Australia’s leading brand for sports and nutritional supplements, with an expanding range of hi-tech compression sportswear and about 50 staff. Young says there is no better place in the world to run a business. “It’s a region of boundless opportunity, with like-minded people striving for innovation and attaining best-inindustry excellence,” he says. “It’s ingrained – the heart and soul of the Gold Coast is entrepreneurial thinking.”

KIANA LARKINS Artist
NEV HYMAN Philanthrocapitalist
Emerging painter Kiana Larkins draws inspiration from her Aboriginal heritage and her affinity with nature. “From the rivers of Katherine to the ocean of the Gold Coast, I have always been immersed in Mother Nature in all her glory and I find all my inspiration from these amazing places of Australia,” she says. Kiana says her paintings are helping her understand her culture. “My art has stemmed from a deep place within me that is wanting to learn more about my culture and myself.”very chance I get,” he says.
Surfers know him as the guy who founded the FireWire surfboard brand. Prime Ministers know him as the guy who has created a system to build low-cost, rapidly deployable, pre-fabricated homes, school class rooms, medical clinics and other community structures from recycled materials. Nev Hyman is a surf industry icon who set up Nev House in 2009 to save the planet. He might just do it. This year he’s won the Australian leg of the prestigious Pitch@Palace, and has established an investment arm in Europe to fund projects worldwide.
AMY SHARK Musician
HARRISON NORRIS Cinematic Virtual Reality
MARGOT ROBBIE Actor
Until her hit single Adore made the music industry put an asterisk next to her name, Amy Shark was known only to a handful of fans on the Gold Coast. Her story is a rock ‘n’ roll dream come true. The indie pop singer-songwriter uploaded her demo of Adore onto Triple J’s Unearthed platform in 2016. The song soon made the rare jump to commercial radio, and a star was born. Adore came in at Number two in last year’s Hottest 100 and she signed a worldwide recording deal.
Virtual Reality expert Harrison Norris has worked on some of the film industry’s biggest productions including Ghost in the Shell, Suicide Squad and Mad Max: Fury Road. Co-founder of PROXi Cinematic VR, Harrison’s passion for the new world of VR has lead to the creation of groundbreaking new VR camera system, foregoing all proximity limitations to capture live action performances in close-up. At 19 Harrison used this new camera system to co-direct the official Suicide Squad VR experience.
Confident, talented and taking on the world, Margot Robbie is one of the brightest stars in a new generation of leading ladies conquering Hollywood. Like so many before her she cut her teeth on the long-running Aussie soap Neighbours. After three years hanging out at Ramsay Street she moved to Los Angeles, and hasn’t looked back since. Her breakthrough role came opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in The Wolf of Wall Street, and she has gone on to star in bigbudget hits such as The Legend of Tarzan and Suicide Squad.
BARRY LEE Architect DBI Chairman and Director of Design Barry Lee has been responsible for the design of some of the Gold Coast’s most spectacular high rises including Soul, Q1 and Jewel. “Our goal is to make a meaningful contribution to the city which is our home and to the many and varied other cities around the world in which we work,” he says. Barry’s philosophy is to combine a focus on human quality of life and environmental sustainability with dynamic and expressive architectural forms, in an attempt to comfort and inspire.

THE IMPORTANCE OF MAKING A ‘HOME’ What makes a house a home? It’s the individualized touch that brands it as yours, surrounding yourself with things that make you smile and bring you joy. Whether it be an artwork at the end of your bed that is the first thing you see in the morning, a mug in your best loved colour to have your morning coffee in or a beautiful vase to put your favorite flowers in. Buy things you love. You don’t always have to follow the ‘rules’ – put that handmade candle your child made in 1st grade next to that expensive vase. Don’t think only one photo or artwork should on a particular wall. Mix and match. Push the boundaries. Make yourself smile with the things you have around you. One of our golden rules with buying artwork is – buy something you love. If you keep coming back to a work you see, if you find you can’t walk away from it, if you keep thinking about it after you’ve gone home – you have already committed to it emotionally. When we look at an artwork, we look at it with all our memories, experiences and the ideas within us. It may speak to us
slightly differently to the message the artist was originally trying to convey, or the message the person next to us feels. That is fine. That is art. It is subjective, works will affect people differently. If you are buying original artworks, there are no guarantees the artist will become a huge success, but the joy you will receive from living with that piece makes it worth every dollar you spent. An original work is unique. Others may have something similar, but no-one will ever have the exact same as you. The items around your home, you look at them every day, they are an integral part of your life. Some of those items you have to have, some of those items you want to have. Make sure at least one of those things makes you smile. Make your house your home, your space – surround yourself with things that make you happy. www.19karen.com.au

World-class “Super gym” to open at Sports Super Centre – Gold Coast in 2018
The Sports Super Centre is excited to announce to our members, guests, and the wider community, that we will be opening the doors to a brand new gym and spin bike studio in 2018. We are pleased to reveal that world-renowned, leading fitness brand, Life Fitness Australia, has won the contract to modernise the centre’s current gym. The Sport Super Centre will be in only the best company, with Life Fitness Australia recently completing the brand new Brisbane Broncos High Performance Centre at Red Hill, as well as supplying the majority of Queensland’s elite training facilities, including Bond University, Brisbane Lions, Cricket Australia and Queensland Reds. Located in the same area as the current Sports Super Centre gym, the fully upgraded open-air facility will showcase “world-class” and “stateof-the-art” cardio equipment, cable machines, free weights, pin-loaded weight machines, plate machines, racks and weight platforms, and an athletic rig. The current spin bikes in our RPM Studio will also be replaced with the industry-leading Body Bike Australia Supreme models. The Sports Super Centre’s Director, Brendan Flynn, said 2018 was going to be a huge year for the Runaway Bay centre. “This gym upgrade will position the Sports Super Centre as one of the leading health, fitness and sporting excellence facilities in Queensland,” he said. “No matter what level our members and guests are at in terms of their health, fitness and training, they will be enjoying the same calibre of facilities as athletes from the Brisbane Broncos,
Gold Coast Titans, Cricket Australia and the Queensland Reds. That’s a very exciting thing for me to be able to say. “We’re extremely enthusiastic to be able to provide state-of-the-art facility to our members, guests and school students. We welcome anyone who is interested to come on in and check out our new gym when it opens.” Mr Flynn said the opening of the new gym was timed perfectly with two major international sporting events being hosted at the Sports Super Centre next year. “Not only will we be hosting athletics, hockey, beach volleyball and triathlon athletes from around the world as an official training venue for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, but we’ll also be hosting many other global sporting events, including the Gold Coast 2018 World Parachuting Championships,” he said. “In addition to the more than $5 million recently spent on our accredited track and field and hockey facilities – and our 50m pool refurbishment – this new gym will only add to the Sports Super Centre’s ability to provide a truly world-class health, fitness and sporting experience for people of all ages and abilities.” The Sports Super Centre is expecting its spin bikes will be installed by before Christmas 2017, with the gym currently scheduled for completion within the first quarter of 2018. In the coming weeks and months, the Sports Super Centre will keep all stakeholders informed of any further developments regarding the new gym, and how the fit-out may impact on members, sporting groups and school guests.

8 FANTASTIC DEGREES TO STUDY IN GOLD COAST Boasting more than 200 international and domestic education providers including three major universities, the Gold Coast is being recognised globally for its education offerings.
Shannon Willoughby, CEO of Study Gold Coast says it is no accident the Gold Coast is being positioned as an education destination of choice. She says Study Gold Coast is using the sector to raise the profile of the city both nationally and internationally. “The growth of the education sector is a key part of further diversifying the Gold Coast economy,’’ says Willoughby. “Not so long ago tourism was the only drawcard for the city and it became trapped in boom and bust cycles.
Now, the city is growing larger, the economy is diversifying and the economy is becoming much more stable.” Willoughby says the education industry is now Australia’s third largest export industry and globally Australia is the third most sought after education destination in the world. Study Gold Coast is working to ensure the city receives its fair share of international students. With this in mind, More Gold Coast has chatted to the city’s three universities to uncover some of the most popular and innovative courses on offer to students…

BINNA BURRA, LAMINGTON NATIONAL PARK 137468 qpws@npsr.qld.gov.au www.npsr.qld.gov.au/parks/lamington
Set yourself up in one of the camping areas or nearby accommodation and spend days exploring this magical part of the world. Take short walks or long treks deep into the park’s forest, exploring boulder-strewn mountain streams, dramatic lookouts, rugged cliffs, plunging gorges and secluded, mountain-top camp sites. As you explore the park, pay homage to the earliest inhabitants—the Yugambeh Aboriginal kinship group. They know this area as Woonoongoora and the mountains are sacred and spiritual—places to be nurtured and respected. There is a rich volcanic history under the spreading greenery of the park. Tamborine, Springbrook, Beechmont and Lamington
are remnants of the Tweed shield volcano’s northern flank. Mount Warning is all that remains of the volcano’s core and the Tweed Valley is a large erosion caldera carved from the eastern flank. This park is part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area, famed for its ongoing geological processes, evolutionary history, and diversity (especially of rare, threatened and endemic species). It is an important refuge for many animals and home to impressive examples of ancient songbirds. Many plants and animals here are threatened species—relying on the protection of the park for survival.
