Welcome to “Local Living” the new magazine that will shine the light on the fabulous Northern Gold Coast region. For many years our little corner has been overlooked by the movers and shakers in the business world and the tourist hardly heard of us unless it was theme park orientated, well not anymore! Some have started to refer to Coomera as “Coomera Boomera” as outsiders learn about what we can offer for those dream of a Queensland lifestyle with a relaxed and family orientated feel. Locals have been waiting for the anticipated Westfield Coomera, freeway Exit 54 upgrades and the very much needed facilities for us Northern Gold Coasters for what feels like forever. Recently announced is a masterplan of Parklands, BMX Tracks, Skate Park, Adventure Playground and more for the highly populated young ones in our community, something that’s been missing for the youth of the region. With Westfield Coomera well on its way and a planned first stage opening in October 2018, exit 54 upgrades and millions invested in smaller shops, petrol stations, doctors and new catholic and public schools we are the place to be. Athletes representing 46 nations will be competing at Southport Broadwater Parklands, the site of the highly successful ITU World Triathlon Gold Coast and home to the 2009 ITU World Championships. We have a cultural tourism offering that’s slowly emerging and city leaders who understand the need to include culture when it comes to visioning for the future. Earlier this month we welcomed the jewel in the new cultural precinct’s crown. HOTA – Home of the Arts opened its much-anticipated outdoor stage with possibly the most bold programming the Gold Coast has ever seen. Irreverent, funny, controversial and poignant, Tim Minchin was the perfect choice to christen the new performance space. Raised in Western Australia and with a career that spans the globe, Minchin is best known for his musical comedy but his career incorporates theatre, musicals, composing, acting, writing and everything in between. You can imagine the anxiety that organisers experience in the lead-up to an event like this. Will the wet weather hold off? Will traffic be an issue? Do we have enough food vendors and toilets? What if there’s a power-failure? What if Tim is completely over the top?

And while the social commentary did come thick and fast, it was also interspersed with songs about cheese and boobs which kept the audience in stitches and resulted in a standing ovation as fireworks were released overhead. As it turned out, everything ran smoothly. People started arriving as soon as gates opened – many armed with low-rise chairs and picnics – and the weather was perfect. The fact that tickets were free was reflected in the diversity of punters – with all ages and backgrounds represented – from babes in arms to those wielding walking sticks. And getting thousands of people out of the space proved no problem at the end of the night, with the HOTA café bar pumping out drinks and DJs on the Terrace keeping punters entertained until the crowd dispersed. In my eyes, this new space is exactly what the city needs. And the fact that it’s versatile and can cater to thousands in an amphitheatre setting or a few hundred in a black box format, means it can adapt to all sorts of touring acts. I’m not the only person that feels that way.

Bezzina says the new space is a great asset for the city and is hoping to showcase the venue for Bleach* Festival 2019.
HOTA is already living up to expectations postlaunch with a diverse bunch of shows on the lineup for coming months.
“I am excited about the possibilities that this venue brings to the Festival program and the rest of the City’s cultural program,” she said. “I think there are endless opportunities for large scale performances, music gigs, events and even food events.”
Concert for the Planet saw a hundred-piece local orchestra set the tone for a celebration of the Earth with sculpture and art installations, performance art, eco-stalls and lights out for Earth Hour all in the mix.
“I also can’t wait to play with the venue in a more intimate setting.” Gold Coast gypsy-flamenco star Felicity Lawless was also enamoured with the space. “I was blown away by the venue,” she said. “Being able to enjoy the fresh air while watching such a high calibre calibre show with flawless sound and lighting was an absolute delight.” “Tim’s performance was amazing. I actually had no idea what to expect as I live in a bit of a bubble, and was excited to see such an honest,
Over coming months there’s free dancing and yoga sessions as well as a repeat performance of ‘The Spirit of Churaki’ which has its world premiere at Bleach* Festival next month. Acclaimed global artist Laurie Anderson is in residence for five days in June, the Queensland Symphony Orchestra pops in to perform the music of John Williams and Neil Finn visits with an orchestra in June. HOTA’s outdoor programming has been a long time coming, but it’s just what the city needs and the timing couldn’t be more perfect.

For internationally renowned children’s series producer Jonathan Shiff, the Gold Coast has pretty much been home-base for 15 years, with Shiff having just wrapped up production of his latest major series shot in the city. Beginning his love-affair with the Gold Coast while filming the global smash hit children’s action series, H2O- Just Add Water, followed by the successful spin off, Mako Mermaids, amongst a string of productions, Shiff’s latest 20-part series is the first season of the fantasy project: The Bureau of Magical Things. With such a stellar track-record, not only does the city feel like home, the crew are treated as family, according to Shiff. “At Jonathan M Shiff Productions our ethos is ‘family’ and over the years many of the same crew members return. When you find a team that works well together it’s important to maintain these valuable relationships in order to run a successful production company,” Shiff says.
Filming from a purpose-built warehouse studio at Arundel during the second half of 2017, the production utilised great office space, wardrobe and art department areas with room enough to build multiple sets, as well as diversity of Gold Coast locations. “As a filming location, the Gold Coast offers an incredible palette to work with. From beautiful beaches and botanical gardens to urban streets – it has been a pleasure to work here over the years,” says Shiff. “Our favourite location with this series was the Gold Coast Botanical Gardens, which served as a naturally beautiful backdrop for our stories.” Future fans may also spot several Southport locations, including Talinga Crescent, Kindra Avenue, Kuranga Avenue, Akes Avenue, Chester Street and Ward Park among a smorgasbord of locations utilised. The Bureau of Magical Things features a young
cast of local actors, led by Brisbane actress Kimie Tsukakoshi (The Family Law) as Kyra, a regular teenage girl who acquires magical powers when caught in a clash between an elf and a fairy, discovering a secret world of magic all around her. Tsukakoshi and her fellow cast and crew members can be hopeful of big things coming out of the series, as Shiff has nurtured the early careers of Hollywood big names including the Gold Coast’s own Margie Robbie, along with Liam Hemsworth. Also achieving success off the back of Shiff’s Gold Coast-shot series, are Phoebe Tonkin (Tomorrow When The War Began, The Secret Circle, The Vampire Diaries, The Originals), Claire Halt (also of The Vampire Diaries and The Originals as well as Pretty Little Liars), and Lucy Fry (Vampire Academy, Wolf Creek, and the Netflix film Bright). “It is fantastic to be bringing back another local high quality children’s series and it’s vital to bring Australian children their own stories at a time
when Australian kids TV is so under threat,” says Shiff. “The City of Gold Coast Film Attraction Program was hugely supportive of our production and their contribution has benefited our series immensely.” A busy twelve months has also seen the City facilitate filming for familiar local and overseas TV productions from single-day shoots for such popular programs as The Voice and House Rules, to lengthy schedules for the UK and German versions of reality series I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here, both of which had 23 days of filming, with the UK version supporting 112 cast and crew. The Gold Coast has also earned exposure in the Japanese and Chinese markets through sports, reality and infotainment programs. The Bureau of Magical Things will be launched this April at MIPTV in Cannes and will be available on Channel 11 later this year.

Set yourself up in one of the camping areas or nearby accommodation and spend days exploring this magical part of the world. Take short walks or long treks deep into the park’s forest, exploring boulder-strewn mountain streams, dramatic lookouts, rugged cliffs, plunging gorges and secluded, mountain-top camp sites. As you explore the park, pay homage to the earliest inhabitants—the Yugambeh Aboriginal kinship group. They know this area as Woonoongoora and the mountains are sacred and spiritual—places to be nurtured and respected. There is a rich volcanic history under the spreading greenery of the park. Tamborine,
Springbrook, Beechmont and Lamington are remnants of the Tweed shield volcano’s northern flank. Mount Warning is all that remains of the volcano’s core and the Tweed Valley is a large erosion caldera carved from the eastern flank. This park is part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area, famed for its ongoing geological processes, evolutionary history, and diversity (especially of rare, threatened and endemic species). It is an important refuge for many animals and home to impressive examples of ancient songbirds. Many plants and animals here are threatened species—relying on the protection of the park for survival.
