Company principal Andrew Henderson, who is also the Gold Coast Zone Chairman for the REIQ, says the family contributes money to the surf clubs every year in a tradition going back to when his father John ran the company. “Dad really saw the value of the clubs to the community when myself and my brother Luke joined the Nobby Beach Surf Club as nippers in 1982,” said Mr Henderson. “Our beaches are the number one reason people live here and visit the region. “The clubs help keep the community, its children and our visitors safe. They also provide a hub for the community to come together. “When Dad discovered in the late 80’s that a club was struggling to survive, he started putting his hand into his own pockets to help them out.” John Henderson Professionals Mermaid Beach has largely been a major sponsor for Nobby Beach, Mermaid Beach and Miami Beach surf clubs ever since.
Mr Henderson said the $1 million had come directly from the Henderson family’s pockets. “On top of that, many of our 28 employees volunteer to help organise fundraising events for the clubs including Mermaid Beach Surf Club’s annual race day,” he said. Mr Henderson said his family’s efforts meant the three clubs were financially stronger and the beaches were safer. “Our donations have covered the cost of beach vehicles, patrol towers, equipment trailers, first aid room supplies, tents, surf skis, rescue boards, nipper boards and clothing. Mr Henderson said he believed more business owners should contribute money to community groups such as the life saving clubs. “We believe in giving back to the community that has helped our business to prosper over the past 46 years and I honestly believe that more Gold Coast businesses should give back to the community that supports them.”
