Vision & Mission St Kevin’s Catholic Primary School envisions an environment where everyone is encouraged to develop their God-given gifts so that they may live happy and fulfilling lives based on the Gospel values. Our mission is to strengthen the partnerships while nurturing and supporting each other as we encourage learners of all ages to shape and enrich our changing worlds by contributing their gifts for the renewal of God’s creation. Our school vision, mission and goals for learning aligns with the Alice Springs (Mparntwe) Education Declaration (2019).

Principal’s Message
S
t Kevin’s is an authentic Catholic community that, in the spirit of Jesus, has its doors open to all people of all faith denominations and journeys of life.
Our connection to our faith enables students to learn how they can truly make a difference in their world. The example of St Kevin and his connection to the natural world, enables us to provide a unique, quality Catholic learning environment, embedded in nature, in which students experience first-hand care for God’s creation. The connections between families in our community is the catalyst for our very first ‘Rainbow Connection Business Directory’. Rainbows are a prominent feature throughout our school, so it seemed fitting for the Rainbow to be the connection between family businesses. I encourage you to support each other within our community, by using this business directory as a first port of call when you are looking for some assistance. Many thanks to the St Kevin’s families and other business owners who have made this directory come to life, and to Ben Ryan and his team for making it happen.
Kind regards, John Downie Principal

Strength with Kindness
Written by Andrew Chinn and St Kevin’s School Community 2012
Strong in our faith, kind in our deeds We grow in love, we live in peace A rainbow of hands, and a sign of new hope St Kevin's School, one in God's love Our God is here in our sacred land From the green of the mountain to the sea and the sand We are called to care for this gift of our world Stewards of creation for all creatures of the earth Jesus is here, at the heart of this place By his holy Cross, we live our faith We are called by his Word to show the way To love one another, all our lives every day The Spirit is here, on this journey we share In the hands that are joined and the hearts that care We are called to share, to be people of peace Giving thanks and praise, we are a family

The Religious Life of the School
A
s part of Brisbane Catholic Education St Kevin’s has two documents which shape our actions as a Catholic school, within the classroom and within our school community. These documents are ‘The Religious Life of the School’ and ‘The Religion Curriculum P-12’. The Religious Life of the School comprises four components: Religious Identity and Culture; Evangelisation and Faith Formation; Prayer and Worship; and Social Action and Justice. Each of these components provides a significant focus on a distinctive aspect of the religious life of our school. Religious Identity and Culture: From the first moment that a student, parent or visitor sets foot in St Kevin’s School it should be evident to them that this is a community where the inspiration of Jesus is manifest in all aspects of school life; in both the physical environment and visible evidence of a faith community. Upon delving deeper, the Gospel spirit that underpins our interactions with each other and shapes our policies, that also creates the ethos of a Christian community, is clearly witnessed. St Kevin’s School aspires to be an authentic Christian community that builds quality relationships modelled on the vision and values of Jesus; a school community which supports the dignity of each person and practises Christian hospitality, proclaiming its values through word and action. Evangelisation and Faith Formation St Kevin’s Catholic School strives to be both an educating and evangelising
8
community. Evangelisation affords a voice to our religious life enabling us to enact and live the words of a faith community. St Kevin’s Catholic School evangelises through our unique culture, through the life witness of our school community, through the curriculum taught in the classroom and in every aspect of the school experience. Our school seeks to model a culture of hope and joy that provides a powerful expression of the good news of Jesus. St Kevin’s Catholic School community creates experiences which assist our students to live in healthy relationships, sensitive to the needs and gifts of others, based on the belief that to be human and to be Christian is to live as a community. Prayer and Worship Prayer and worship are integral to the life of all Catholic schools and have the potential to nourish the spiritual growth of all members of the school community. Prayer and worship provide the opportunity for students to celebrate their life and identity as members of the school and to nurture their relationship in faith with God and with one another. At St Kevin’s Catholic School teachers also draw upon student understanding and skills about genre, purpose, context and meaning in assisting them to write appropriate texts for prayer and worship experiences. In particular, knowledge and skills related to The Arts (e.g. dance, drama, media arts, music and visual arts) enhance the quality of prayer and worship experiences.
Strength with Kindness
St Kevin’s Catholic School draws on the richness of the Catholic tradition and the wider Christian tradition to nurture the prayer life of the school. We guide our students to consciously and actively participate in the liturgy and sacraments. Preparation for receiving the sacraments, whilst supported through the religion curriculum, is formalised through the parish to which the family belongs. As well as the celebration of formal liturgies and prayer, St Kevin’s Catholic School community celebrates prayer rituals to mark the everyday patterns of life, rites of passage and moments of grief, loss, joy and celebration. In recent times, the practice of meditation has become popular in all schools. Many school communities have begun the journey of introducing their students to times of silence and stillness to prepare them to enter into and experience forms of meditative and contemplative prayer. Students of all ages are capable of using meditative prayer practices and clearly value this expression of prayer. Social Action and Justice St Kevin’s Catholic School practises justice within its own community through policies, structures and practices which are consistent with the themes of Catholic social teaching. Respect for the dignity of the human person underlies Catholic social justice themes. Belief in the inherent dignity of the human person is the foundation of all Catholic
social teaching. Human life is sacred, and the dignity of the human person is the starting point for a moral vision for society. This principle is grounded in the idea that the person is made in the image of God. The person is the clearest reflection of God among us. This teaching rests on one basic principle: individual human beings are the foundation, the cause and the end of every social institution (Mother and Teacher, 1961, n.219). Establishing positive relationships and decision-making processes that respect the dignity of individuals and promote the common good are key features here at St Kevin’s Catholic School. These are reflected in significant areas of school life such as enrolment procedures, decisions about curriculum, school fees and levies, academic reporting and behaviour support. Our school community acts for justice in the way we demonstrate a commitment to the poor and marginalised, actively work for peace and practice stewardship of the earth. Through the school community’s generosity we support Caritas, Catholic Mission, Rosies, St Vincent De Paul, Animal Welfare League and the Pyjama Foundation, through regular appeals. The Social Justice Group work together throughout the year to assist in the planning and preparation of these various appeals. What does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love tenderly and to walk humbly with your God (Micah 6:8).

DANIELLE SEARLE
has assisted hundreds of clients with the resolution of their family, parenting or property matters. Her goal is to help clients reconnect successfully with an angst free, post separation lifestyle based on research and experience. For clients with children, this means remaining child focused and not abdicating your parental responsibilities by placing the children in the middle of a ‘tug of war’. Separation which is badly handled can have long-term negative impacts on all parties, particularly children— emotionally and developmentally.
