golden drum report 2010
THANKS TO THE PAST, LET’S GO AHEAD! I saw two times tearful eyes this week. The first time was six days ago, on Sunday, when we have heard that our dear friend Dragan Sakan had suddenly passed away. It was a proof that we are a community, a Golden Drum family, that we know and respect each other, that we have our heroes and friends, and that we are not alone in this increasingly unfriendly world. The second time I saw tears this week, was when we have honored twelve noble men and woman by putting their names on the marble wall of the Golden Drum New European Hall of Fame. It was a proof that the Golden Drum is an important institution of the New European advertising industry and also highly regarded the world over. Advertising festivals are not only about awards and lectures, they are unique opportunities to meet people and to see eyes to eyes with colleagues and friends, with competitors and stars. People are social creatures, not only pictures and words. Some of our colleagues probably can substitute festivals with a facebook or a you-tube contact, as some of our critics claim. But I know that advertising is about much more than this or that hot academic theory or hard selling, it is about the art of communication with real people. Without understanding people, without caring about them, without knowing their smell, tears and laughter, and without the honest human touch it is just impossible to communicate honestly with them. For the third time we will probably see tears tonight, but these will be tears of joy: tears of joy in the eyes of a new class of communication winners, of brilliant business promoters for more effective building of a better world. Their winning works are a great bunch of good reasons for an optimistic look forward to the Golden Era that Sir John Hegarty has announced. And like my dear friend Saki liked to say: Thanks to the past, let’s go ahead! Jure Apih, President of Golden Drum at the closing Awards Ceremony on Saturday, October 9

GOLDEN DRUM NEW EUROPE HALL OF FAME Speaking about history after seventeen years may seem preposterous, but our time is running so fast that ten years old experiences seem like something from another era. The world before the fall of the Berlin wall twenty years ago doesn’t exist in the memory of today’s Golden Drum generation. New European advertising industry was less then five years old in 1994 when the Golden Drum was born. How many of you have had a personal computer and a mobile phone in that time? The world had been turned upside down. We have survived the good times and crisis, new owners, new authorities, new competitors. The fundamental laws of our business have been questioned. Optimists and pessimists are changing their places. Like sand sifting through fingers the time is passing... History, like memories, is an unfair judge. Many important facts, figures and names are disappearing in a giant black hole. The industry we have been celebrating at the Golden Drum for seventeen years hasn’t been progressing on its own alone. Without its fighters and dreamers, without its friends and believers, without its heroes, our drums wouldn’t have turned to gold. If we believe in a mission for the future, we have responsibilities to the past and to those who have built the present. Without it, everything and everyone will be lost in space. 1
At the end of one chapter the Golden Drum has decided to establish the GOLDEN DRUM NEW EUROPE HALL OF FAME. On the marble wall of Bernardin’s Congress Hall where we are meeting year by year, names of men of merit will be engraved for time immemorial.
THE FIRST TWELVE MEMBERS IN THE HALL OF FAME

3
Jiri Mikeš has exclaimed the Golden Drum’s first YES. As a secretary general of the Czech advertising agencies association he was the first to have heard of the Golden Drum, understood it, supported it and promoted it’s growth and excellence. He was the Golden Drum’s first ambassador and extremely important both at home and at the European Association EACA for establishment of the festival and the advertising industry in the Czech Republic and the New Europe.
4
Ivan Chimburov is the Golden “baraban”. When the Golden Drum was making its first cautious steps, the vast creativity of his Russian soul raised the quality standards to the top of Europe and beyond. Twelve times he has stood on the winners’ podium, he was a great jury president, and he made all of the New Europe proud when he was joint Master of Ceremonies at the closing Gala with Bob Garfield. (1)

4
Vital Verlič and Futura have been the best agency of the New Europe three times. His worldclass production standards and always fresh creative drive have constantly been raising the bar of New Europe’s advertising industry. (2) Darek Zatorski is the New Europe’s enfant terrible: his name is at no fewer than 49 Bronze, Silver and Golden Drums and Grand Prix. He has put on no less than 7 golden watches for creative directors of the very best advertising campaigns. In three agencies he has proved there is no old or new European advertising, but only poor, good, and excellent. (3) 5
6
Jarek Ziebinski personifies the New Europe. His refined instinct and everlasting enthusiasm have fueled growth of his industry, nation, agency family and the Golden Drum. He was at the helm of the best agency in the New Europe for the first time with Leo Burnett Warsaw, and then five more times as chairman of the agency’s European Board with their Czech, Romanian and Lebanese teams. Dragan Sakan is the legend of New Europe’s advertising. It is not only his job, but his life. He has arrived in his shorts, and become the best known ad man of the South-Eastern Europe. His agency has been Golden Drum’s best agency of the year. He struggled through some difficult partnerships and other tough times, but he has always come back stronger. WPP Piran’s Ideas campus and Balkan Tango with New Idea Woman were the last candies on the big cake of his successful carriere. More than anyone he marked the pioneer’s times of advertising industry he belonged to. And he left, when he achieved all that is possible in this space. (4) Michael Conrad is the Golden Drum’s Godfather and the initiator of New Europe’s creativity. From the very top of a multinational agency he has been the first to have responded to the Golden Drum’s invitation. He bravely supported the home-grown creative energies of Leo Burnett’s Polish, Czech, and Romanian ad people. He has helped the Golden Drum to raise the quality standard and thus its reputation. He has made his competitors think of the New European markets and the advertising industry in no uncertain terms. If the Golden Drum had but one friend, it would certainly be Michael Conrad. (5)
7
Daniel Ružička is an adman with insight and inspiration. He creates ads in such a way as they should have been to push the economy, help people and make the world a better place. A genius locus is his guardian angel. The right way forward follows his footsteps. (6) Juraj Vaculik demonstrates the great potential of the Golden Drum. When he had visited the festival for the first time, he made a pledge that one day he will conquer it. He put everybody in his agency on a private bus and brought them to Portorož to inspire them with a mission and ambition. He wears two golden watches for top creative directors and proudly displays the Grand Prix at his agency’s headquarters. (7)
8
Adrian Botan is the Golden Drum’s Orpheus. His tunes are proof that creativity in advertising is a privilege of the rich – rich in stubbornness and in heart. His visual talent has won all awards at the Golden Drum, and his confidence in the Genius loci, the spirit of the place, has convinced the last doubters that the New Europe is to succeed in its own way. (8) Milka Pogliani is the Golden Drum’s First Lady. Without any loud drumming she has come on stage and instantly won all hearts. Softly, but decisively she pulls the golden strings that steer a major corporation on the path of a new creativity. She understands and encourages, helps and nurtures; she opens the doors and pushes forward those who need a light. Without her leadership McCann wouldn’t have won the greatest accolade twice, and in the whole of New Europe there would have been less precious stone. (9)
9
Jan Mariusz Demner is a grand master of the advertising craft. Although he has a good view across the Austrian peaks and although sometimes Europe seems too small for him, his soul nevertheless belongs to a space that used to have been governed by his people. Today, when we are back together again, he has been with us on stage of the Golden Drum Academy, on the winners’ podium, and also on the dance floor. His agency has won more awards than any other from Austria.

golden drum report 2010
RECONSTRUCTION CREATIVE ACADEMY 1 – Michael Conrad, President of Berlin School of Creative Leadership, took the audience through his ‘7plus’ quality management thinking, through his ‘Fabric of a big idea’ and through the Berlin School architecture of Creative Leadership. Quality communication, quality ideas and quality leadership are three of the fundamental issues our industry is struggling more and more with today. 2 – Matthew Bull, Global Executive Creative

Director, Lowe Worldwide: For too long advertising has been a word that confines as opposed to liberates, to the degree that many advertising agencies are afraid to use it. Matthew celebrates it and redefines it by rediscovering it. Looking back, there is so much to look forward to.
3 – Sir John Hegarty, Worldwide Creative Director, Bartle Bogle Hegarty, UK: The future of advertising has been questioned. Regardless of what these cynics say, our industry is about to enter a golden period: 10 reasons why this is the best time to be in advertising 4 – John Dooner, Chairman McCann Worldgroup, spoke about the transformation of our industry – thanks to the changing consumer, the impact of technology, the explosion of digital options; what clients are telling him that they expect from us today; and what we need to do about it: Our world has changed, but our job has not.
5 – Mark Tutssel, Chief Creative Officer, Leo Burnett Worldwide. Everything in this business can be distilled down to two things, people and their behavior. Agencies must never lose sight of the most important thing: what matters to people. A brand without purpose is one that will never be understood or embraced by people. HumanKind is not about advertising or brand propositions or selling products, but a story about people, purpose and changing behavior.

10 – Richard Pinder, Chief Operating Officer, Publicis Worldwide, presented Reconstruction & changing the conversation. Conversation is the most powerful force in marketing. The best brands are those who listen to their audiences and bring their own conversation to the table. As new media fast becomes the main media, conversations are the most effective way for brands to create influence and social currency, particularly in a region where commercial messaging is increasingly rejected by the target audience. Richard explored the business impact that contagious advertising ideas can have when they move beyond mere buzz and really change the conversation in a category.
11 – Charlie Stjernberg, partner and senior consultant in Public Affairs department, Prime Group, Sweden, explained how PR and advertising industry need to cooperate in order to adapt to a new media and consumer landscape.
