here’s something new in the neighborhood of 26th Street and Western Avenue. Grille 26, the newest addition to the Minervas Restaurant family, has taken up residence in the space formerly occupied by Spezia. With its name chosen to reflect casual comfort and a relaxed atmosphere, this new neighborhood grille and bar espouses a culinary philosophy of fresh and flavorful, with an emphasis on fresh and homemade.
In keeping with its neighborhood theme, on display on the walls of what’s becoming known as “The Grille, are old photos of the Sioux Falls area and familiar landmarks. The photos feature such places as the Piggly Wiggly store, a mobile station, and Sioux Falls College (as USF was then known) to name a few. Many of the photos are from the Center for Western Studies, The Old Courthouse Museum, USF/SFC, and several

The new dÊcor includes suspended tiles serving to improve acoustics to allow a comfortable conversational noise level; but also are aesthetic in their design. The new windows are larger and allow for more natural light, and great views of the Spellerberg sledding hill, and the daily life and traffic of the neighborhood street. Options for seating areas include the main dining room’s tables and booths, and a special one-half moon booth table which seats up to 6. The bar features both high and low tables. Electronic pagers allow waiting diners to stroll the shops and area within two hundred yards.
The Grille 26 chefs put a lot of thought into all of the ingredients, ensuring that everything has more of a creative culinary spin to it than ordinary faire. Truly a spectacular menu which includes selections such as brunch specialties, sandwiches, soups, burgers, salads, pastas, flame roasted pizzas, entrees such as kabobs, steaks, and seafood, and small features, bakery biscuits, muffins, and cafĂŠ roll desserts made from scratch. The good sized wine list offers patrons four ways to enjoy the wine experience: the “taste”, a 2 oz pour, by the glass, 6 oz., a quartino, one-third of a bottle, or by the bottle. “The fun part
about wine is tasting and not having to buy an entire bottle, it gives people the opportunity to share and puts the control in their hands as to how much they would like to try; try a variety instead of one full one.” A wide selection of white wines, red wines, champagne cocktails, bottled beer, and tap beer is available. Dessert Happy Hour is from 9:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. Monday–Tuesday and coffee and dessert are available for $5.00. Live music, a little jazz and blues, is featured on Friday and Saturday evenings.

hen Janice Burke moved into her townhome four years ago, she felt at home right away. An acquaintance had been its previous owner, and when she decided to relocate, this friend suggested the quaint character of the townhome’s design as fitting for Burke.

The names “townhouse” or “townhomes” are used to describe non-uniform units in suburban areas that are designed to mimic detached or semi-detached homes. The distinction between condos and townhomes is that townhomes usually

consist of multiple families and usually multiple floors. The traditional “townhouse” apartment is a two bedroom unit with the living room in the front on the lower level, kitchen in the back. Two bedrooms are on the front and back of the upper level
with a single bathroom between. The layout of this townhome provides for comfortable entertaining with two bathrooms upstairs and one downstairs. The upper level does contain two bedrooms, and the stairway
opens in the spacious living room. Burke found a replacement stone fireplace to provide contrast to the white walls, and she added several black elements and crystal to the decorating. There are also plants, trees and other greenery added in her

are captured through displayed artwork and books. These books capture some of their past travels, and world history is of special interest to Janice. “I feel lucky to have traveled to these places because they have more meaning through experiencing their location first-hand,” she shares. Burke was wise in her decision to simplify as she moved in, only keeping her favorite pieces and not trying to incorporate more than the space could hold. The end result is rooms that she enjoys free of clutter. The combination of neutrals and darker tones continues in the kitchen and master bedroom. Burke felt the townhome was so open that she needed to have the light color choices for her walls and decorative items set against solid furniture pieces. In the kitchen, the cabinetry is simple and Burke opted to have the counter surfaces redone in black. The appliances were in place, and Burke did decide to add a pantry cabinet. Everything is easily accessible and organized.

Outside, the upkeep is again simple. The unit is part brick and part siding, and the neutral coloring gives a longevity to its appeal. In each bathroom, there are silver framed mirrors that are favorites of Burke’s. She added a unique look on a side wall, selecting a full-length mirror also framed in silver. It’s topped with a soldered iridescent art piece that hangs over the mirror. This was something her daughter had owned, and as she’s inherited it, Burke has had to fix it twice. It almost looks like a beautiful wind chime, but it’s a delicate work of art that Burke remembers her daughter also cherishing. The beauty Janice Burke has created is something that brings her solace from the storms and peace amidst a hectic day. It only takes a small stretch of the imagination and one of her favorite books, perhaps reading relaxed in the loft, to explore new places or past trips. Her home is the picture of a full life – with treasures close to her heart.

y wife was quick to remind me that I should write a Mother’s Day article this month. I said, “But I really want to write about wines from Argentina.â€? With a glare that only a loving wife (and mother) can produce, she quipped, “I am the mother of your three boys.â€? And with that, I am reminded of why I love my wife so much. however, is not their functionality, or even their aesthetics, it’s that every year, for the past five years, they have placed their tiny handprints on these pieces of art. And with each year, we watch their hands, and their love, grow. To see their two hands mature over the years almost brings a tear to my eye. There’s another set of hands that doesn’t necessarily bring a tear to my eye, but certainly bring a joy to my palate, and these are the Two Hands wines from Australia. Read on to find out about these special wines from very special winemakers. The creation of Two Hands Wines started as the vision of two longtime friends or “two hands”. Michael Twelftree and Richard Mintz. Both gained familiarity with wine and success in the industry in earlier pursuits. But, their passion for Australian wine, especially Shiraz, led to their founding of Two Hands Wines in Australia’s Barossa Valley in 1999. A mere 17 tons of fruit in the inaugural 2000 harvest was unquestionably a humble beginning. It’s certainly not an event that would herald the kind of praise Two Hands now receives in the wine community. It wasn’t long before the winery’s many Shiraz offerings began to attract 90+ scores in the most influential and prestigious wine press. In 2004, Robert Parker named Two Hands “The finest negociant operation south of the equator.” Then, in 2005, fifteen of its wines received 90+ ratings from Parker’s Wine Advocate. Only six years passed before Two Hands became a critically acclaimed luxury wine producer. What makes these wines even more special is how they name an entire series of wines they produce after their children: Max, Harry, Edward, Sophie, Samantha, Lily, and Bella. Known as the “Garden” series, they are all Shiraz

wines but all come from different sub regions in Southern Australia. Each has its own unique characteristics from the subtle differences in their microclimates. Lily’s Garden is an amazing Shiraz from McLaren Vale. This inky wine has an intense nose of blueberry, blackberry, and plum with subtle mocha and spice notes. On the palate, this wine has a firm structure with tight but fine dry tannins married with a dense fruit mid-palate. This is everything Shiraz should be and more. Of course, with a high quality growing region coupled with high quality winemaking methods (then add the high ratings from critics worldwide,) you have the makings of a high priced wine. Consult your local wine store for pricing. If you’re in the mood for another Shiraz from these producers, but are not ready to part with $60 or $70, check out their “Picture series. With names like Gnarly Dudes, Brilliant Disguise, and Yesterday’s Hero, you are sure to find one to please your taste buds. One of their best is Angel’s Share Shiraz. The 2007 vintage received a 92 point rating and just so happened to make this year’s Wine Spectator’s Top 100 wines in the world. This is a great value for what’s packed in the bottle. This Shiraz has deep aromas of plums, chocolate, and a hint of licorice and mint. On the palate, I am always amazed by the vibrant black currant flavors and the impeccable tannins. This is a Top 100 wine that is a must for any enophile, whether you have a 2000 bottle cellar or a cute wine rack in the kitchen. This Mother’s Day, celebrate your love for your mother by giving her your love for wine. Add a personal touch and she will know how much she means to you. Carpe Moms and carpe vino! GO GREEN
Mary, Mary quite contrary How does your garden grow? With silver bells and cockle shells And pretty maids all in a row.
H
ow does your garden grow? The nursery rhyme reminds us of the childlike wonder associated with the garden in sing-song verse. I don’t associate this garden with pesticides, fertilizers and toxic runoff. Instead, in my mind, this innocent place takes the organic approach perfect for the very real environmental concerns of protecting and preserving natural resources. Maybe I seem a bit too poetic about green thumbs and potting soil, but building your own patch of green incorporating greener choices is art. If you build it, green will come. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) encourages what they refer to as “greenscaping” to promote a healthier yard. These landscaping practices encourage reducing waste, water use and chemical use — which can also help keep more green in your bank account. Chris Zdorovtsov, a horticulture educator with the Minnehaha County Extension Office looks at backyard sustainability as “a way to reduce environmental pollution,
and also save people money. You can fertilize less, spray less. You can have the nice yard, and pay less for the nice yard.” The packed seminars offered earlier this spring by the Extension office prove the community is interested. Maybe the nursery rhyme should ask, “Where does your garden grow?” First you must plant right for your site. Chris explains that xeriscaping, or dry land landscaping, is a smart choice for the South Dakota climate. The adjective she is looking for in flowers: Hardy. A few suggestions that fit the bill are Russian Sage, Purple Coneflower, Coreopsis, Yarrow and Hyssop. Mix in some ornamental grass and you have a garden of variety, color and versatility. Another option is the Rain Garden, your own sunken garden that takes advantage of the low lying area of the yard by soaking up water runoff. While many of the earlier mentioned varieties can thrive in the Rain Garden, if it is in a shady spot you might try Hostas and Astibles according to Chris. All these plant names

are Greek to me – or is it Latin? – but your local greenhouse or nursery will be able to translate. There are a few other easy tools and techniques to green garden care. By investing in a rain barrel, you can water your yard with rainwater to reduce water costs and usage while also cutting down on erosion and flooding by limiting storm runoff. Using mulch and compost can strengthen soil, but if you must use fertilizer the EPA recommends looking for products boasting “natural organic or “slow release ingredients that help establish strong root systems and reduce toxic runoff into ground and surface waters. One lawn tip to reducing the need for fertilizer: mow higher. Keeping the lawn at three inches shades weed seeds and promotes stronger root systems. Hopefully these tips will help green up the garden. Green gardening, to me, questions, “How does our garden grow? If each of us chooses just one way we can conserve water in our backyard or reduce the need for fertilizer, then it can become a community movement. Do what you can. While the Sioux Falls Community Garden spots across town are full this year, mark your calendar for January to apply for an 8 by
20 foot plot to garden next summer. As you plan this year’s garden choose more hearty & drought-resistant plants. If you are apartment-bound, start a container garden on your deck. And finally, if you don’t have a green thumb yourself, make sure the flower shop where you order mom’s Mother’s Day bouquet sells organic or local flowers. Digging a little deeper into our nursery rhyme, it turns out that the garden is tended by Bloody Mary and she is actually planting graveyards during a time of religious strife in England. Instead of despair and danger, we can rewrite our gardening techniques to work within the natural framework of the environment to create a thriving patch of green heaven that has more substance - and sustainability - than childhood fairytales. lant aliases are often catchy and homespun, spark the imagination, and form pictures in our heads. And besides, they are a heck of a lot easier to remember, pronounce, and spell than the Latin names. The Pulmonaria genus has gathered a bunch of unusual common names. When their petals make a debut in one color, often pink, and exit as another, often blue, they are called “soldiers and sailors” or “Joseph and Mary.” Their spotted leaves call up names like “Mary spilt the milk,” “spotted dog,” and the not-so-compelling “lungwort.” “Lungwort” refers to the leaves’ resemblance to a diseased lung – now that’s an
Practically the instant that frost is out of spring ground, stems pop up and dangle clusters of blossoms from the tips like Virginia bluebells. Petals fuse into a single funnel shape, a characteristic of the borage family. Beginning in late April, they show off for two weeks, and then appear sporadically for a while longer. Cut back spent flower stems and you will sometimes be rewarded with more. As flowering wanes, long, hairy, usually pointed leaves thrust from the crown and form flattened clumps. Pulmonaria’s silvery spots and splashes are a type of “blister” variegation” caused by air pockets that reflect gauzy light from beneath the outer “skin” of the leaf, the epidermis. Plants sometimes wilt dramatically, even when there is ample moisture in the soil. If sun beats directly down on them, the wilting is more pronounced. Plants may even appear to die if allowed to dry out beyond recovery, but often they are only dormant and will come up again the next spring. This exchange of wilt and recover, wilt and recover is a natural occurrence for Pulmonaria, and plants normally rebound once shade and/or moisture return. Occasionally mildew and slugs are problems. Pulmonaria are native to southern Europe and Asia and arrived in America via England more than 200 years ago. New

eyeful. The rump of an Appaloosa pony - that’s what I think of when contemplating Pulmonaria’s dappled and dotted leaves. How about rumpwort or rumpspot? Pulmonaroosa or appaloomonaria are harder to spell. Pulmonaria or lungwort (wort simply means “plant” or “root”) was one of the plants that led to the formulation of the Doctrine of the Signatures in the 1600s. It was believed for a time that plants relayed a deeper meaning through their “markings.” Shapes and colors of biological materials were often looked upon as divine signposts, God’s messages, to attract humans to their uses. Lungwort would be used to treat coughs and wheezing. (The leaf of liverwort resembled the liver and was used to treat liver ailments. Barrenwort treated infertility. Bladderwort treated urinary tract afflictions. There was birthwort, fleawort, goutwort, lousewort, motherwort, navelwort, nipplewort, pilewort, spleenwort, throatwort, woundwort and rupturewort. You get the picture.) Pulmonaria (or substitute any of the above) are unusual shade loving plants. Many are hardy for us and easy to grow. Plants gradually increase year after year when provided with humus-laden, well-drained, moisture-retentive soil. They can be divided, shared, and spread around your own garden.

Pulmonaria ‘Polar Splash’
Pulmonaria ‘Berries and Cream’
hybrids show up on the market regularly; American breeders have introduced many since the 1990s. The following are a few with which I’ve enjoyed great success. ‘Highdown’ flower buds appear barely pink then, immediately after opening, change to brilliant cobalt blue. This plant rarely wilts, an anomaly among lungwort selections. ‘Polar Splash’ has the distinction of rounded leaf tips and small separated spots like large polka dots of uniform size. Blue changes to pink. ‘Raspberry Splash’ has an upright form; long leaf spears arch up and out, whereas most others form large, flat clumps. Silvery blotches are irregular in form and connect and overlap. Flowers are raspberry red. ‘Berries and Cream’ leaves appear to be completely covered in silver. Traces of green are only seen on the darker midrib. Leaf margins appear as a scribbled green edge. Ruffled flowers begin as raspberry rose then switch to purple.
‘Mrs. Moon’ was the first I ever planted. She is steadfast, and still comes up after all these years. Flowers change from pink to violet. A study in 1994 by the Chicago Botanic Garden once compared 51 Pulmonaria cultivars and species and rated them for ornamental qualities, disease resistance, and hardiness. It concluded with two lists: the most desirable and the least desirable, limited to those available up to that decade. Highlights are ‘Pink Haze’, ‘Roy Davidson’, ‘Bielefeld Pink’, and ‘David Ward’. For the complete Chicago study go to: http:// www.chicagobotanic.org/research/plant_evaluation/index. php#notes By now in May, vignettes of spotted leaves and cheerful, hue-changing flowers have blocked out repulsive scenarios of foul lungs or horses’ asses. The eye-catching focal points of Pulmonaria companioned with spring daffodils, coral-bells and ferns create good medicine for the eye and soul and potent antidotes to the neutral colors of winter.

Save Some Money and Pitch a Tent BY JESSICA GUNDERSON
V
acations can be expensive and in the recent economy people are generally becoming more aware of where their money goes. However, everyone needs to get away once in awhile. Camping can be the perfect way to escape to a remote location and still have a great time without breaking the bank. It gives you a chance to enjoy the outdoors, sleep under the stars, awaken your senses, and create some fantastic memories. There are many kinds of camping, but pitching a tent at a local or state park is a classic choice by many campers. Generally, men take the credit for the knowledge of what goes into an eventful camping trip. However, no matter how beautiful they may look while doing it, women can participate to their full ability in all aspects of the trip with a little research and preparation. They can tell the men to “step aside” in the navigating, pitching a tent, preparing the fire, and cooking the meals. In order to be fully prepared for your next camping trip, think about purchasing a few simple items that will make your experience easier and less stressful. Keep a camping checklist and brainstorm on what you really need and what can stay at home. Remember to consider the items that could be used for

multiple purposes. This will reduce your load and the chance of leaving something behind. Weather is unpredictable, especially in the Midwest. When choosing a tent, keep in mind that there are those that are meant for all seasons and will be perfect for both hot and cold days. Water-resistance, good ventilation and mesh screens are important qualities to look for in your tent to ensure comfortable air flow and bug reduction. If you already own a good tent, remember to unpack it and check to make sure everything is there that is required for pitching. The same goes for when you return from your trip, but this time you would be letting the tent thoroughly dry from any condensation or anything else that might cause mildew damage during storage. Find a level and firm site. It is not any fun to realize that you are slowly sliding to one side of the tent when you are trying to sleep. For obvious reasons, make sure to clear any rocks or sticks before setting up your tent. A tarp is used to prevent water from soaking into the tent after rainfall or morning dew. The tarp also has multiple functions. It can be used for the beach or for picnics, or can be hung with rope for shelter or windbreaks.
Rope is another essential item to bring for handy ideas you might get while camping. Setting an entry mat in front of the tent entrance will prevent the uncomfortable sand and dirt remnants from creeping into your sleeping space when people enter throughout the day. A map of the camping area will be very useful for you and your fellow campers. Be sure to memorize where the nearest bathroom or shower is and read the rules at the entrance regarding fires, noise, and garbage handling. A swiss army knife can do wonders for a female camper. With a nail file, tweezers, small scissors and a knife, it includes some things you may find that you need while spending your time outdoors for a couple of days and nights. Travel sized bottles, disposable razors, some soap and your essential cosmetics will help to freshen you up when you start to feel a little dirty mid-trip. Just remember that any perfumed product will most likely attract mosquitoes. If there are showers in the campground, you will need to bring shoes to be worn to and from (and possibly even during) the shower. Bring quarters in case the shower is coin-operated. Bug repellents and lotions are important. Ticks are a common concern when spending time outdoors. They are most active in spring and early summer, and can be found before they attach by checking yourself and your loved ones frequently. Keeping fruity drinks and foods such as juice and marshmallows contained can

reduce the risk of unwanted bees, wasps and flies. Bringing a grill or a camping stove can definitely enhance your dining experiences while camping out. Preparing ahead of time by making a meal menu for each day will allow you to pack accordingly and simplify things. After you are done with a meal, cleaning up should be immediate. Scrape the leftovers into a garbage bag or reusable container, depending if you will eat it again. Take the garbage to the camp dumpster to prevent attracting uninvited wildlife. Storing food in your tent is not a good idea. This can attract critters that can cause damage to your tent and definitely change the mood of being a happy camper. Keep any food that is not in the cooler inside the trunk of your car. The right meals and snacks will also give you energy during those hiking and biking adventures you may want to participate in. Fruits, vegetables, oatmeal bars, nuts and other easy snack foods are perfect for this. To keep food cool, a gallon jug or several bottles of frozen water in the cooler will serve multiple purposes: keeping meals and leftovers cold so they don’t go bad, hydrating a thirsty camper, putting the fire out, and helping to wash up. The food and beverages should be stored in separate coolers in order to prevent the food from warming up when people go to grab a drink. To make the ice last longer, a reflective cover can reduce the heat inside. Coolers come with spouts at the bottom, making

it easy to drain the melted ice for use in cleaning or putting out fires. Water is probably the most important thing you can bring camping. You need to stay hydrated and it would be easy to do by having one or two larger containers to fill with water. If you plan on bringing any alcoholic beverages on the trip, it is wise not to bring glass containers. Many sites don’t allow glass, but will accept aluminum or plastic containers. For wine, think
about bringing it in a boxed container or pouring your preferred flavor into a plastic container. There is usually a designated fire pit where you can start a fire and cook meals, roast marshmallows and if you are lucky enough to know a musician, sing along to a guitar or a harmonica. When you are done with the fire, be sure to put it completely out by pouring water over it and stirring the coals.

Don’t Ignore Signs of a Stroke BY SANFORD HEALTH with Jerome Freeman, MD, Sanford Clinic Neurology

ou may not be concerned about stroke just yet. But stroke can happen to anyone, at any time and at any age. Stroke doesn’t discriminate – it affects people of all ages, ethnicities and backgrounds. In fact, the National Stroke Association reports that stroke is the third leading cause of death in America and the No. 1 cause of adult disability. Fortunately, up to 80% of strokes are preventable; we can all take steps now to avoid having a stroke.
What is a Stroke? Stroke can most easily be described by comparing it to a heart attack, except it occurs in the brain. Commonly called a ‘brain attack’, damage occurs in the brain when a blood clot blocks an artery. And as with a heart attack, response time can be vital in determining the success of treatment. Implement these Stroke Prevention Guidelines to lessen your chance of having a stroke:

Many stroke patients have no idea they are having a stroke. “If you understand the warning signs (of stroke) and get to the hospital quickly, it may be possible to reverse the stroke or lessen its effects, says Jerome Freeman, MD, Sanford Clinic Neurology. Learning to recognize a stroke is important and easy. React F.A.S.T to get treatment to save the lives of your loved ones by following these guidelines:
Face – Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop? Arms – Ask the person to hold both arms up evenly. Does one arm drift downward? Speech – Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence. Are their words slurred or mixed up? Time – If the person shows any of these symptoms, call 9-1-1 immediately. Brain cells are dying. The good news is that strokes are preventable. You should stop smoking, keep blood pressure at normal levels, cholesterol and diabetes under control, and manage atrial fibrillation (a condition where the heart beats irregularly) to reduce stroke risk. Dr. Freeman explains that, “Getting immediate medical care can help minimize brain damage and dramatically increase the chance of recovery. Patients who receive emergency medical treatment within three hours of the onset of stroke can often be given a clotbusting medication that will dissolve the blood clot and restore normal blood flow to the brain.

Newborn Screening Leads to Early Intervention in Hearing Loss BY DONNA FARRIS for Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center

Approximately one in three babies per 1,000 are born with some type of hearing loss, caused by factors such as genetics, infection during pregnancy, prematurity, or maternal diabetes. If necessary, babies can be fitted with hearing aids as early as 8 weeks of age. “The brain is wired to hear,” Fendrich said. Without hearing, children are at a significant disadvantage in language development. Jenny Miller of Tea is the mother of three boys, age 11 months,

othing can replace the human sense of hearing, yet today’s technological advancements address hearing loss better than ever before. So parents should stay tuned into the possibility of hearing loss and be ready to intervene. Most children are screened for hearing soon after birth. Even though a baby can’t answer in response to sound, audiologists can accurately measure their hearing using specialized equipment, said Teresa Fendrich, audiologist at Avera McKennan.

2 years and 6, all of whom have some degree of hearing loss ranging from mild to moderately severe. “It seems to be genetic, although we never thought about it until our oldest son was screened in the hospital as a newborn,” Jenny said. All three sons were fitted with hearing aids between the ages of 2 and 4 months. While the youngest two are still learning to talk at age 11 months and 2 years, the oldest son, 6, is now in kindergarten. “He’s doing awesome, and has really good speech for someone with a hearing loss. We credit that with the fact that he was identified as a newborn, and got early intervention with speech therapy.” While hearing loss isn’t something Jenny and her husband, Paul, expected, it’s something they take in stride as parents. “Speech therapy has helped us know what to look for, and we probably are more aware of helping them develop their language skills,” Jenny said. Even if children pass their first hearing test, it doesn’t mean their hearing will be perfect throughout childhood. Hearing loss can be acquired through disease, a condition or an injury. For example, chronic ear infections can cause hearing loss, although this is most often temporary. Parents should continually watch for signs that their baby is hearing well. Newborns will startle, shift their eyes or change their sucking patterns in response to sound. Later, they will
seem soothed by their parents’ voice, turn their head toward their parents’ voice and smile when spoken to. As they develop speech, babies will babble as they practice sounds, and say their first word by 9 to 12 months of age. It’s pretty typical for older children to be so absorbed in play or a TV show that they tune out other sounds – especially a parent’s call. Yet if your child is saying “what?” a lot or asking you to repeat things, this could be reason for concern. Noise exposure is the top preventable cause of hearing loss. Sounds louder than 80 decibels are considered potentially hazardous. Yet a rock concert can peak at 150 decibels and firearms sound off at 140 dB. Even some toys can top 90 decibels. There’s no “getting used” to loud noise. Tiny hair cells in the inner ear bend in response to sound. Too much noise can bend these cells too far, damaging or killing the cells. Once damaged, they cannot grow back, causing permanent hearing loss. “Your child’s iPod is probably too loud if you can hear the music they’re listening to 3 feet away,” Fendrich said. She also recommends hearing protection for kids who go on hunting trips, or to rock concerts. “Hearing can change – sometimes we don’t know the reason. So parents with any concerns should refer their child for a hearing evaluation,” Fendrich said. hen planning your wedding reception, the list of details to attend to can seem endless. The music and entertainment on your big day is a very important factor, because it is not only about the way it sounds but also about the way it makes people feel. It is one of the most memorable parts of a wedding and it is noticed by guests whether it is excellent or if something goes wrong. Depending on your budget and your style, there are a few different options to consider for music and entertainment. A DJ (disc jockey) is a very common choice for weddings. DJs not only play songs, but can help to set the tone and double as a master of ceremonies (MC) — and usually have their own equipment and sound system. The MC usually introduces the bridal party, guests making toasts, and leads traditional activities such as the garter auction, bouquet toss, and yes, even the hokey pokey. Guests are waiting to be told what is next; they usually appreciate the announcements and it gets them more involved. If you decide to hire a DJ, be sure to consult with them and make sure they are able to play the songs you prefer, as well as take requests. Getting a reference from the DJ in order to get some
feedback is also important. Find out what others that have worked with this person have to say. A live band is also very popular at a wedding reception — and you don’t even have to know a member of the band. There is no reason not to ask one of your favorite bands (especially a local band) to play via their Myspace or Facebook pages, because you never know if they will say yes. Bands are typically more expensive than DJs, and create a completely different feel. Recommendations from more than one person are important when it comes to choosing the band. Make sure they will play your selected songs and take requests from guests throughout the night. Some bands will allow you to play an iPod between their sets, so you can sneak in a few of the songs they probably wouldn’t be able to cover exactly how you would like. To ensure that the wrong song doesn’t ruin your mood, create a detailed “do-not-play list for the band or the D.J. This list can be better than a “do-play list when the band or D.J. is experienced in reading the mood of the guests and playing tunes that they all will enjoy, as long as it isn’t the song that belonged to you or your

fiancé’s past relationships. If you have a small budget, you also have the option to set up a personalized playlist on an iPod, laptop, or other media player and hook it up to a quality sound system. To ensure others will enjoy the music at your wedding, you may want to request that invited guests write their favorite love song on their R.S.V.P. This can also be a great way to discover some things you never knew about your relatives. You will have flexibility when it comes to song choice and you can enlist a loved one to take full responsibility for the music throughout the night, making this to be the most inexpensive decision. The person who is chosen to control the music should be warned not to drink too much alcohol and be aware of any songs you don’t want played, as well as the ones you want to hear. There are various methods to play music on an iPod throughout the wedding. Having a dedicated playlist for different events throughout the night, including cocktail hour, dinner and dancing, will make it easy for the music controller to only change the music at the appropriate times. You could also ask your hired friend to serve as an MC and try to read the crowd
and change the music accordingly. The iPod may be inexpensive, but even the most thought-out playlist can’t substitute for the interaction and perspective of a professional DJ. It can also have the risk of appearing too casual to some people. The extra cost of having a professional person behind the music might be worth it in order to have control over what is played. Another con to using an iPod set up at your reception is the fact that you have one more thing to worry about taking down at the end of the show. Your decision obviously depends on the size and style of your wedding. If you have a very small group of people attending, an iPod would make more sense than if you were inviting hundreds of people. If your wedding is in a tropical location, your options for music and entertainment may be more limited. In any situation, and iPod or MP3 player will make a good backup solution in the event of a DJ or band failing to show up or canceling last minute. Relying on one of these options can be risky, and it might be a good idea to mix it up a bit and use a combination of these choices.

Allergies BY DICK ROGEN, DVM ,

llergies happen to pets too. With spring blooming around us, our pets have to deal with pollen and allergies just like people. We sneeze and have itchy eyes, while are pets will experience skin issues. The symptoms for your pet can range from an annoying itch to severe skin infections, ear infections and hair loss. Pets can be allergic to anything that can affect people. Seasonal allergies are the most common. Spring time allergies are from the pollens of grass and trees. These start in late April and last until mid-June. In late summer, ragweed, pigweed and salt bush cause very severe problems. Molds during the late fall and very early spring also can initiate an allergic response. If your pet has allergies all year, then we look at food allergies, house dust, fabrics and molds. It is not uncommon for pets to have allergies to many different things. The first sign of an allergy is itching. It can progress to redness, sores or rashes on the belly, while some pets will lick and chew at their paws until they bleed. Chronic on and off ear infections will also occur. Seasonal allergies can last from 1-2 weeks to as long as the grass is green. The severity of the symptoms also varies. In most pets the allergy season becomes longer and more severe each year. Controlling the allergies can be done a variety of ways, depending upon each pet’s symptoms. I usually like to start with the methods that have low side effects and are economical. Antihistamines will help some patients, however dogs and cats do not respond as well as people. There are 3 major groups of antihistamines and trials through each type are needed to find the best possible medication. In mild seasonal allergies, they may provide enough comfort for your friend. I usually combine
them with topical steroid preparations, shampoos and Omega Fatty acids. Often the topical medications and shampoos will help, but they need to be applied daily. The short duration of effectiveness and the amount of time required to treat may not be practical for some households. They help, but are usually not strong enough alone to provide comfort. The most common method to control the symptoms of allergies are corticosteroids like Prednisone, Triamcinilone or long acting injectable formulations. They will give quick and long lasting relief. Long term use can have serious side effects that make their constant use dangerous. If your pet needs quick comfort, they are the only products that can provide that relief. I like to use them at the lowest dose possible for the shortest time needed. If your pet requires long periods of treatment or year round treatment, there are other medications to help keep them comfortable. Atopica is a medication that slows the immune system and helps control allergies. It lessens the response of the body to allergies. We need to monitor their blood if this medication is used. Allergy testing through a simple blood test is the safest way to deal with allergies. It gives a view of exactly what your pet is allergic to. If we can avoid things, change diets and anticipate when your pet will have problems their symptoms can be easier to control. Other pets will benefit from allergy shots to shut off the body’s response to specific pollens, allergens and molds. Your pet does not have to be uncomfortable, if we use the right plan for them.

Praises of Motherhood

he seed that grew in Rachael Meyerink’s decision to become a Pediatric Dietician and invest herself in her own family is partially rooted in her mother making home-cooked meals and gathering everyone around the dinner table. Memories bring back hearty conversations of when she was a small child to the time she was a teenager – simply through sharing a consistent evening meal together. Meyerink has a son Fisher, age four, and daughter Claire, now two. She loves to watch them explore, sing and laugh. She’s recently had the opportunity to substitute in her position at Sanford to be at home more with them, and she’s finding that’s giving her time to see those special moments and not miss that short window of life with her young children.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOMENT AS A MOM? My son Fisher is very expressive. He’ll say, “Mom, I love you so much!” and you can tell he’s just overcome with his love. I know it’s an amazing gift how expressive he is, because not every child is like that. My daughter Claire started following his example, and I don’t know that her personality would lend itself to that, but I like it that she’s learning. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED AS A DIETICIAN THAT HAS HELPED YOU AT HOME? Now’s the time I’ll spend shaping my children’s eating habits for life. As my mom taught home economics, she also set a good example in making a healthy variety of foods for our family. Even though my dad would only take a few asparagus spears, he would show us that we could try them. It’s a parent’s job to determine what is served, when and where – and a child can decide what they’ll eat. But by spacing the meals out and not allowing a lot of snacking in between, you’ll create a hunger for the nutritious foods served at meals. It’s important to keep exposing children to these foods and not give up.
HAVE YOU BEEN SURPRISED BY SOMETHING YOUR CHILDREN HAVE SAID? One time my husband Lance was going on a ski trip when Fisher was 2 1/2. As Lance was leaving he said, “Bye, Fisher. I’m going skiing with my best friend.” Fisher replied, “When I get bigger I want to be your best friend.” I think he likes being together because he told us, “I don’t ever want to go to heaven, if I do I’ll just jump right back down.” ARE YOU ABLE TO STOP AND SMELL THE ROSES AMIDST THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF PARENTING? It can be a challenge as there’s always something I have to get done. When they’re content, I need to discipline myself to stay in the moment and just play. I keep a journal of our special days and capture what the kids say and do, and it’s such a gift to read something that you wouldn’t recall, as it all comes back when you look again – yet to think it could have all been lost. My grandpa even kept a date book, and we like to go back and see what they were doing in the past. It’s usually me digging up a holiday back from fifty years ago to bring these happy times into the present.

The Town Pump

West Sioux Falls at Garfield and Bailey
The town pump provided water for the needs of the residents of the West Sioux Falls neighborhood and also an opportunity for women and girls to meet to socialize.
THE TOWN PUMP Soon after this area was platted in 1889, the city of Sioux Falls installed a community well which was located at this spot. It was a source of water for livestock and household use. Local residents referred to it as the “town pump. Here they hand pumped cold, refreshing water, which they carried back to their homes in pails or hauled in cream cans and barrels loaded on horse-drawn wagons, buggies, and stone-boats. The pump was also used to fill a large trough for use by horses and cattle. The town pump was a popular meeting place, where children played games, teenagers flirted, and adults socialized. Trips often started here for summer swimming and winter ice skating at the nearby Big 3IOUX 2IVER 7HEN MUNICIPAL WATER LINES REACHED the West Sioux Falls community in the 1920s, city crews removed the much used pump and filled in and covered the old well. $%$)#!4%$ ).
