houses the new Child’s Play Wear clothing line for girls and boys. Nancy Savage opened Child’s Play Toys two years ago, and while having a clothing line was part of her initial business plan, she focused on establishing the toy business first. When the corner space next to the toy store was still available last winter, that put the wheels in motion. “I needed more room for our toys and games, and adding a clothing line was just a natural progression of the business,” says Savage. “So when I found out the space next to us was
available, I decided to expand. I came to Sioux Falls from Seattle, and I knew many clothing brands there that I liked as a parent, so those are the ones I brought into Child’s Play Wear.” Most of the clothing lines at the store go up to size 6x, says Savage. One brand, the Tea Collection, offers items for boys and girls in sizes 2-12. Savage says she believes it is important for parents to be able to find quality clothes that are appropriate for the child’s age. “Here, parents can find clothes for little girls that let them look

like little girls – not 16-year-olds,” she says. “There are casual, comfy items for both boys and girls, as well as other items that are a little dressier.” She says the ruffled tops and dresses have been popular for girls, and their “Kicky Pants” are popular with parents of infants. These footed sleepers are eco-friendly – made of bamboo and surprisingly soft. They also have “flip paws” that fold over to protect baby’s hands and prevent scratching. “I know my style is not everyone else’s style,” Savage says,

“so I am always looking for new and unique items to bring to Child’s Play Wear. I want to be sure we offer clothing that wears well and washes well.” Coming this Fall will be a selection of Corky & Company coats for girls and boys that will keep kids warm in style. A local mom and daughter team also create clothing that Savage has in the store. The Bridget & Lucy line provides eclectic choices for girls. Along with the historic features of the building, including original woodwork, tile floor and exposed brick walls, Savage has added some unique touches like a large wooden castle that is being transformed into a dressing room. And, she keeps up with the times by offering trendy items like key chains and stuffed animals from the popular Angry Birds game. While parents are browsing through the clothing racks, kids can explore some of the toys that are on shelves on the Child’s Play Wear side of the store. There is a large wall of Playmobil building sets and a collection of costumes to transform your child into a princess, a knight, a doctor or a chef. If the kids want to explore their wild side, they can check out the Furree Faces masks that go on like a head band with an animal face that includes realistic animal sounds when you press on the nose. Kids can let out their inner bear, tiger, rabbit, mouse, dog or zebra. For a sensory extravaganza, be sure to visit the Child’s Play Toys side of the store, too. You can find something for all ages to spark creativity, foster the imagination and promote siblings and families playing together. If you have a budding chef, check out the many play sets that teach the food groups or allow kids to have a play pizza party, ice cream sundae bar or make a healthy gourmet salad. Your engineers will enjoy different models and building sets, including one that features a three-story wooden home, with complementary sets to fill the bedroom, bathroom, living room and kitchen. Kids can also enjoy “My First Green Toys,” a line that features 100% recycled plastic, non-BPA toys like building blocks, stacking cups, tea set, fire truck and more. Parents can find some of their favorite classics like the Yo-Yo, Monopoly, Scrabble and Shrinky Dinks to share with their children, but there are also plenty of new games, puzzles, arts and crafts and books to explore together. For special occasions and holidays, the store also has greeting cards and free gift wrapping. Whether you’re a kid or a kid at heart, you will enjoy your experience at Child’s Play Toys and Child’s Play Wear in historic downtown Sioux Falls.

emories of growing up on the farm with a mom who baked every day. That is the inspiration behind Ella’s Bakery in Dell Rapids, a new business that opened this summer next to the Grand Opera House. Jane Millman and daughter Kristi Corcoran opened the bakery in June, just in time for Crazy Days and Quarry Days in Dell Rapids. “It was the most unimaginable thing ever,” says Millman. “To see all the people standing outside waiting to come in...it was amazing. The community has been so supportive.” Millman was raised on a farm south of Flandreau and grew up in the kitchen with her mom Ella, the bakery’s namesake. In fact, the bakery’s logo was designed from Ella’s own signature scanned from her personal diary. “Mom would bake every single day,” recalls Millman. “She would bake cinnamon rolls, cookies and pies. There was always a jar filled with chocolate chip cookies when we would come home from school.” Millman nods with a smile as Corcoran talks about how her mom has always wanted to have a bakery. “My sister and I would always bug our mom to bake, or else we’d be in the kitchen baking with her,” Corcoran says. “It was a daily thing for us growing up, just like it was for her. Mom has always wanted to open a bakery, and it’s fun to be doing this with her.” Corcoran adds that even her 86-year-old grandfather is still making angel food cakes, breads and other treats for others. “After grandma passed away, he missed those baked treats, so

he taught himself to bake. I think he’s known as the angel food cake king!” Millman treasures her mom’s original Better Homes and Garden cookbook - you probably remember that book with the red-checked cover that was a staple in many kitchens. “I still have mom’s cookbook, which has all of her notes written in it from the recipes she tried. She was a farm wife, so she spent a lot of time cooking and baking.” Although Millman has those special family recipes, her daughter isn’t sure she needs them. “Mom can make chocolate chip cookies in her sleep,” Corcoran says with a laugh. The mother-daughter duo currently offers five cookie flavors: the famous chocolate chip, peanut butter, monster, carrot and the chocolate studded dream. They also bake cinnamon rolls and caramel rolls, as well as several muffin varieties like almond poppyseed, banana and blueberry. With Fall here, visitors will enjoy the new pumpkin muffins with cream cheese frosting. And, Millman says, they are eventually planning to add two muffin flavors - streusel and cranberry nut. Everything is made from scratch at Ella’s. “We smash our own bananas and shred our own carrots, “ says Corcoran. “I think people around here really appreciate that,” adds Millman. “We work long hours, but we want to put out a really good product.” The bakers are looking ahead to the holiday season, when they will add homemade lefse, sugar cookies and decorated cookies to their offerings. “Maybe a little fudge, too,” says Millman.

Even though Ella’s has only been open a few months, customers have already developed their favorites. So, as they think about new things to offer, both Millman and Corcoran say they have to plan carefully. “The cookies have really been a hit around town,” Corcoran says, “Everyone has their favorite flavor. So, we want to try new things, but don’t want to get rid of something that somebody really likes!” While they have shelves of treats ready for visitors each day, Ella’s will also take customer orders. They request 24 hours advance notice for their regular items and a little more time for special orders like lefse, white or wheat buns and decorated sugar cookies. The charm of the building is as pleasing as the sweet treats they offer. With the original tin ceiling and black and white tile floor, you just can’t help the feeling of wanting to stay awhile. In fact, that is exactly why Millman and Corcoran are adding a few tables and chairs in the front of the bakery. “We love to talk,” Corcoran laughs. “And now people can come in and sit down while they enjoy their cinnamon roll or cookie.” Over the years, both Millman and Corcoran have heard many people reminisce about Ella. “They remember my mom and her cinnamon rolls,” Millman says. In fact, one of Millman’s childhood friends, an artist living in Texas, created a special picture when she heard about Ella’s bakery. The picture hangs near the cash register in the bakery — a drawing of Millman and her friend as young girls, taken from a picture the artist had found, with a fresh-from-the-oven cinnamon roll on a plate in front of them. A fitting tribute to Ella and the family traditions that Millman and Corcoran are keeping alive. Although they do put in long hours, Millman is enjoying the experience with her daughter. “It just goes to show you that it’s never too late to go after your dream.” Writer’s note: If you go to the bakery and have any distance to drive, take one sample out of the bag and put the rest in the back seat out of reach, or the treats may not make it to your destination.

Decorated Family Lights Up the Lives and the Homes of Military Families Christmas Décor Celebrates Its Ninth Year of Spreading Christmas Cheer
T
his holiday season, Christmas Décor will be bringing a little extra holiday spirit into the homes of military families for the ninth annual Decorated Family Program. With more than 100,000 American men and women deployed overseas this holiday season, families across the nation are facing the challenge of preparing for the holidays without their loved one. For all that those deployed do for our country; Christmas Décor is giving a little back to the families of these brave men and women. Christmas Décor began the Decorated Family Program in 2003 to thank our country’s soldiers for their dedication and support by decorating their family’s homes. Each holiday, hundreds of Christmas Décor franchisees nationwide participate in this event by donating their products, resources and time to decorate the homes of local military families as part of the Decorated Family Program. “It is so rewarding to see how much happiness our decorations bring to these families. For all of the sacrifices their loved ones make for us to have a happy and safe holiday, they are so deserving of some extra holiday cheer” said Blake Smith, President of Christmas Décor. People can nominate deserving military families in their community by filling out the nomination form available on the Christmas Decor fan page on Facebook (http://facebook.com/christmasdecor). When the form is completed and submitted, it is automatically sent to Christmas Decor
Corporate via decoratedfamily@ thedecorgroup.com. This form allows people to explain why the family should become a “Christmas Décor Decorated Family.” Winners are awarded based on their location (to ensure there is a local franchise to provide the award) and the impact of their story on the judges. People can also post their Decorated Family stories on the Christmas Décor fan page on Facebook to enter a contest to receive a special prize. The lucky winning family will be the one with the most “like” votes on the Facebook page. The company is seeking to attract hundreds of nominations that result in decorating at least 200 homes for the 2010 holiday season. The deadline for nominations is November 11, 2011. For more information about the Decorated Family Program please visit the company’s website, www.christmasdecor.net.

I Am a
Porketarian. By Jim Mathis
G
rowing up I had an on again, off again love affair with pork. Bacon and sausage made me pledge my undying love. Then an over-done pork chop or too-salty ham would have me swearing I’d never eat the foul beast again. But that was when everyone was concerned that pork that was anything less than very, very well-done would send us to an early grave with tricanosis. I have since learned there is a wonderful world of pork filled with crispy bacon and medium rare pork loin. We now live in a post-“The Other White Meat” era when pork means exotic hams, unctuous sausages and to-die-for barbeque. And this October, which is National Pork Month, I declare that I love pork and I am a Porketarian. As such, I will faithfully sing the praises of porcine goodness. First, let’s talk about bacon. Bacon is proof that God loves us
and wants us to eat pork. I often think the only thing it would take to get a vegetarian to switch teams is a few good slices of applewood smoked pork belly, crispy but not burnt. Bacon at breakfast is a no-brainer. Put bacon on salads and sandwiches? Of course! But why not add it to vegetables? That will get the kids to eat their green beans. Wrapped around tenderloins or scallops or even water chestnuts, bacon makes just about everything better. What’s the next best thing to bacon? Sausage! Don’t get all pious about caloric content and the stuff that goes into sausage; I don’t want to hear it. I know it’s not good for you. I know what goes into sausage. But trust me; it’s better than what goes into a Twinkie and you’re not complaining about Twinkies, are you? OK, then bear with me.

When I was growing up in Des Moines there was only one sausage that really mattered, the sweet Italian sausage from Graziano Brothers Market on South Union Ave. I can still smell that old market down by the river. Their Italian sausage is the barometer by which every other sausage should be measured. You can now get their special concoction all over central Iowa. I hope there are no laws about transporting pork across state lines, because I have brought plenty of this stuff to the Sioux Empire. Since then, I have fallen for spicy Andouille sausages from Louisiana, chorizos from Spain and Mexico, Portuguese linguica and countless others from around the world. While many people will say they like pork, they probably think of chops, loins and ham; the glamorous cuts of the hog. But two of my favorite cuts of pork are the cheapest—the shoulder (often called the Boston Butt—I don’t know why) and the shank (the shin bone, just above the foot). Both of these cuts need to be treated with care and cooked a long time to break down the tough, sinewy connective tissue. But if you’ve ever had really good barbequed pulled pork, you know how that tough old pork shoulder turns into succulent pig-candy. And a braised pork shank will melt in your mouth and make you think you’ve gone to porky heaven. But don’t get me wrong, I love a good pork chop too. Lately I’ve been smoking pork chops over chunks of old white oak whiskey barrels. Sorry, I had to wipe a little drool off the keyboard. Here’s the thing I’ve learned about cooking pork chops; they don’t need to be “well done”. A nice thick chop cooked to medium (about 145 degrees in the middle) is not only safe, but tender and juicy. This is not your grandmother’s tough, dry pork chop. And a pork tenderloin is just about the easiest protein you can cook for dinner… rub it with some salt, pepper and a few herbs and throw it in the oven or on the grill for 15 to 20 minutes until your meat thermometer reads about 140, and then let it rest for a few minutes and it will finish cooking. It’s really easier (and better for you) than cooking a hamburger. What about ham, you ask? There is not enough space here to talk about the wonders of ham. Not the salty, canned variety, but prosciutto from Italy or Iberico from Spain. That’s a whole different article in itself. So who’s with me? Anyone ready to join the Porketarian movement? No…OK, fry two slices of bacon and call me in the morning. Do yourself a favor, eat something good today. And if it’s not good, add some bacon. Jim Mathis is more than just an evangelist for pork, he also runs an ad agency in Uptown Sioux Falls, just southwest of Falls Park and John Morrell’s, The Temple of Pork.

ne night in the small town of Garfield, N.J., a fire started inside the local sausage factory. In a blink, the building was engulfed in flames. The alarm went out to all the fire departments for miles around. When the first volunteer fire fighters appeared on the scene, the sausage company president rushed to the fire chief and said, “All of our secret sausage recipes are in the vault in the center of the plant. They have to be saved, so I will donate $50,000 to the fire company that brings them out and delivers them to me.” But the roaring flames held the firefighters off. Soon more fire departments had to be called in because the situation became desperate. As the firemen arrived, the president shouted out that the offer to extricate the secret recipes was now $100,000 to the fire department that could save them. Suddenly from up the road, a lone siren was heard as another fire truck came into sight. It was the fire engine of the nearby Lodi, N.J. volunteer fire department composed mainly of Italian
firefighters over the age of 65. To everyone’s amazement, the little run-down fire engine, operated by these Italian firefighters, passed fire engines parked outside the plant, and drove straight into the middle of the inferno. Outside, the other firemen watched in amazement as the Italian old timers jumped off and began to fight the fire as if they were fighting to save their own lives. Within a short time, the Lodi old timers had extinguished the fire and saved the secret recipes. The grateful sausage company president joyfully announced that for such a super human accomplishment he was upping the reward to $200,000, and walked over to personally thank each of the brave elderly Italian firefighters. A TV news crew rushed in after capturing the event on film. The reporter asked the Italian fire chief, “What are you going to do with all that money?” “Wella,” said Chief Pasquale De Luccinellavanti, the 70-year-

old fire chief, “De fursta tinga we gonnna do isza fixa de brakes on dat truck!” I love stories that make me smile. Although a fictitious fable, accidental heroes are sometimes the most memorable ones. In the wine world, one of the most well known wines in the world was created one day 40 years ago by accident. The first zinfandel vineyards were planted in California in the mid 1800s during the time of the gold rush. Brought by eastern European immigrants wanting to make sure they would have wine to drink, it is one of the oldest wine grape varieties in the United States. Zinfandel (or zin) had the advantage of not needing a trellis system to thrive. Gnarled head pruned vines can still be found in the Sierra Foothills and a few other regions. Some of the vines date back over 100 years. Prior to the mid ‘70s, zinfandel was produced primarily as a red wine. Ironically, it was the introduction of “white zinfandel” that saved the old vineyards from being ripped out as sales of red zinfandel fell when other varieties gained popularity. White zinfandel which accounts for 10% of U.S. wine sales was discovered quite by accident. A California winemaker, in the process of making a dry zinfandel rose’ experienced a “stuck fermentation” where the yeast died before the sugar was fully converted to alcohol. The winemaker liked the resulting sweet wine and the rest is history. White zinfandel gets its blush of color from the deep red skin of the zinfandel grape. When the grapes are harvested, the skins are left on for only a short time; a few hours to a day; perhaps. The weight of the grapes, pressing against each other, extracts a pretty pink-tinged juice. In contrast, a winemaker making red zinfandel wine will leave the juice and the red skins in contact for days or weeks, producing a deep red juice. Not all blush wines are equal and here is where white zin shines. It is made from a quality grape. The zinfandel grape is known for its luscious deep, berry-fruit flavors and a characteristic spiciness (think “blackberries”) - which transfers to white zinfandel in a delectable, but less intense manner, than in the red version. If you are new to wine drinking, try starting with a white zin, it’s sweet and easy to drink. If you already are a white zin drinker, I urge you to try something different! Try a Moscato d’Asti or a Late Harvest Riesling. Expand your palate. See you at the expo for her! Carpe Vino! Vegetarian Month
By Amanda Day of Pomegranate Market
A
mericans are meat-eaters. Every meal of the day can easily consist of meat as a main source of protein. Bacon with breakfast, turkey at lunch, beef for dinner. Buffalo, elk, salmon, chicken, even eel - we’ll eat just about any cut of meat from most species of animal, and that’s just part of our culture. There is, however, a common misconception that meat is critical to proper nutrition. Some even believe its the only real source of protein in our diets. But some research is beginning to show that meat consumption in itself is not essential to the proper
nutrition and could even be hurting us. Sure, the human body needs protein to perform basic functions, but there are other sources of protein which may be more beneficial to one’s health than a hefty helping of meatloaf. Not only can cutting back on meat consumption benefit our health, but it also gives the environment a much-needed break. October is National Vegetarian Month, which makes it an opportune thirty one days to educate ourselves about how being vegetarian, even for one day per week, can promote

goodness all around. Meatless Mondays are becoming trendy - if you’re a follower of food blogs and health websites you have probably caught word that opting out of eating meat as protein on Monday is the new “thing” to do - and here’s why: hundreds of studies over the last ten years prove that eating large portions of meat on a regular basis may contribute to heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and multiple types of cancer. Even more recent studies report that eliminating that hamburger from your diet even one night per week can benefit your health. The reason leaving meat behind once a week helps you is because you’re forced to consume plant-based foods to fill you up. The vegetarian protein-rich sources like quinoa, beans, and tofu tend to be higher in fiber, nutrients, vitamins and antioxidants. One cup of quinoa contains 18 grams of protein, which is comparable to the amount of protein found in a serving of ham or three eggs. Add some black beans and veggies to your quinoa, and you will have consumed approximately half of the recommended daily intake of protein — and that’s just within one meal. Studies from Harvard University determined that replacing saturated-fat-rich-foods like meat and full-fat dairy with options high in healthy fats, like nuts, seeds, and various oils, reduces the risk of heart disease by 19%. Dr. Sanjay Gupta recently released an hour long documentary called, “The Last Heart Attack” - during the sixty minutes of information, he interviews at least three people who were at serious risk for heart attack months ago and have all but eliminated their chances of suffering from a heart attack now. How did they do it? They eliminated meat, dairy and eggs from their diets and started consuming a plantrich diet of vegetables, legumes, fruits and whole grains. Research from this film shows decreased plaque build-up in the arteries — that’s right, the meatless diet actually cleared already-clogged arteries...and it only took a few months. Another benefit of opting out of meat is the positive impact it can have on the environment. In 2006, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reported that meat consumption across the United States unleashes more carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide than our gasguzzling SUVs do. Non-eco-friendly meat production

FINANCIAL & HOMEOWNER COUNSELING practices are not only polluting the air we breathe, but they are also taking their toll on our land and water supply. Forests are being cleared to make way for giant livestock farms — and an estimated 70% of grazing land is considered degraded. Land degradation is often caused by livestock overgrazing, and the result is unfruitful soil, which makes it more difficult to cultivate anything from there for many years to come. In 2009, the Natural Resources Defense Council reported over 100,000 square miles of polluted ground water in California alone — and they determined the contamination came from cow manure and the various chemicals used to prevent cattle from falling ill. Moral of the story: if you’re going to eat meat, buy it locally from farms that respect the future of our environment and health. So, how does one go about preparing a meat-free meal once per week? There are resources galore to help you find recipes as simple as veggie stir fry, you just need to know where to look. As research proves that plant-based diets are excellent for overall health, many cookbooks are filling bookshelves with veggie recipes. My favorite vegetarian cookbook is The Vegetarian Option by Simon Hopkinson. The author admits that he could never be a strict vegetarian, but he understands the importance of consuming proper nutrition from plants, fruits and vegetables. The recipes here are straight forward, quick and satisfying. Another bountiful resource for finding vegetarian recipes is www. foodgawker.com. Visit the homepage and type “vegetarian” into the search bar — the website gives you access to a multitude of recipes through food blogs all over the United States. Going meatless every so often may seem like a challenge in the beginning, but stick to it. I am not saying, “eliminate all meat from your diet” because I personally enjoy a serving of bacon from time to time. The point I’m trying to make, is that by stepping back and realizing that there are more options than just meat as a main source of protein could extend your life and allow you to live it disease-free, in a clean, happy, healthy environment. I can't even explain the feeling the next day (after mastectomy and reconstruction) of looking at my chest and seeing my skin intact even after losing both breasts. Overall, I am extremely happy with the results and the care was fantastic by the nurse and doctor at a very scary time in my life." – Lisa, August 2010

ioux Falls is a great place to live. With such rich history, there are so many very interesting stories to tell. Some of these stories will give people quite a good scare. With such a past, there are some experiences that are unexplainable. In this fantastic city we call home, there are a few places that are said to be haunted. Located Downtown, the Actor’s Studio was once the location of the Rainbow Bar and Grill. The ghost of a man is said to roam the Studio. It is said that long ago, the man was

dancing with a woman whose husband was away at war. The husband had come back from fighting in the war and saw the two of them together. The jealous soldier killed the man right on the spot. People have said they can hear the ghost roaming the Studio and whistling “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star”. Right next door to the Orpheum Theater and Actor’s Studio sits the Sioux Falls Community Playhouse. Here there is also a story of a ghost who haunts the premises. He is called Larry, who apparently used to be a janitor at the Playhouse who died while working there. People say they have experienced sinks turning on and off and toilets flushing on their own. They also say they can hear footsteps throughout the night. The Washington Pavilion is a very well-known location in Sioux Falls. With this building also having been the site of Washington High School, it is also said to be haunted. Several people have heard footsteps and have gotten the feeling of somebody else in the room with them. They have also experienced stage lights and props being messed with mysteriously. There are stories about a ghost that rides the elevators with people, but disappears before the destination is reached. Another seemingly haunted location near Sioux Falls is the beautiful Gitchie Manitou State Preserve. This spread of protected land dates back more than four centuries. Occupied in the late 1600s by the Oneota American Indians and later in the early 1900s by the Yankton Sioux American Indians, it was a continuous living space for American Indians. It also was covered by large boulders that were thought to have healing powers and were the center of ceremonies done by the occupants on the Preserve. To this
day, the large boulders remain, with the marks still there to show where the tools were used when grinding chips of the boulders into powder for use in medicine. Frightening sounds are heard here, especially at night. Campers have claimed to have seen the ghost of a young man wondering around at night. There is a place in Sioux Falls dedicated to the pioneers of Minnehaha County, a tall stone monument near the cemetery that overlooks the north side of Sioux Falls, just east of the State Penitentiary. The Monument is said to be haunted by a man and his son, who were killed in 1862. The man was a farmer and a judge, known as Judge Amidon. While tending to the farm one morning, the man and his 14-year-old son were both shot and killed in their cornfield. It is said that the ghosts still have their wounds and are not healed yet. People have also seen strange lights and gotten feelings of being watched here. Locals have talked about a stretch of gravel road located not far outside of Sioux Falls, just south of Brandon. It is called “Spook Road”, and has a very supernatural presence to it. Some say that while traveling east, you will drive over five bridges, but there are really only four bridges counted when returning on the same drive headed west. There are also some who claim that if you put a doughnut on your hood ornament during your drive down Spook Road, there will mysteriously be a bite taken out of it. It the thought of the supernatural is just too much, but you still want a good, fun scare, you can always visit the Jaycees Haunted House in Sioux Falls. Located at the Fine Arts Building on the south side of the W.H. Lyon Fairground, the “place where nightmares begin” opens up on October 20th and continues through October 31st.

Andrea’s Story W
hen young mom Andrea Sprik felt a lump in her breast, it was logical to assume it had something to do with her recent pregnancy. While she hoped that was true, deep down Andrea knew she was facing a diagnosis of breast cancer. “I think that was God’s way of preparing me for what I was going to go through,” Andrea says. After feeling the lump, Andrea, only 32, immediately went to her family doctor, who recommended

Because a diagnosis of breast cancer was confirmed about three weeks later, after a mammogram and biopsy. It tested to be HER2-positive – a more aggressive type of breast cancer. Andrea remembers feeling scared, yet not paralyzed by fear. “God gave me a peace about it. I knew God would take care for me, and I had a network of friends and family who were praying for me, and who would do anything to help me and my family.”
by Donna Farris, For Avera Mckennan Hospital & University Health Center
After her diagnosis in April 2010, the first line of treatment was a double mastectomy. The cancer was localized to only one breast, yet her doctor recommended the double mastectomy due to the aggressive nature of HER2-positive type cancer. “It was the best decision, based on my age and the chance of a recurrence.” Andrea had lymph nodes removed after a sentinel lymph node biopsy was a bit suspicious. Also to prevent recurrence, she went through six rounds of chemotherapy and had Herceptin infusions for a year, a drug that targets HER2-

with vegetables, because of their lack of sweetness. A very interesting produce indeed. Why not take advantage of this fun and colorful member of the squash family this holiday season with your children? A family trip to a pumpkin farm can be the memory of a lifetime for your kids, and for you as a parent. Enjoy the perks that come with a pumpkin farm visit with some hot apple cider or some hot chocolate with marshmallows, and take your time choosing from several pumpkins of different shapes, sizes and colors. Your children can learn how a pumpkin grows and be in charge of deciding which to take home with them. When choosing your pumpkin, keep in mind what fun creations can be made. When a face will be going on the pumpkin, a perfectly round shape would be great for any happy or scary expression. Tall, thin shapes can be perfect for funny expressions or even a full body. An odd shape can add to the creativity of making a unique character out of the pumpkin. Make sure the pumpkin is free of breaks in the skin or any soft spots, and that it includes at least some of a stem, for ease of removing seeds through the top. Also, keep in mind the several colors available, with white being a little abnormal, yet fun to craft with as well.
FUN FO R THE WHOLE FAMIL Y! WHOLE FAMIL Y!
Pumpkins are something kids love, because they can paint on them, cut faces in them, and even bake the seeds. Create a pumpkin carving and decorating tradition your whole family can enjoy every year for Halloween or Thanksgiving. Another something to look forward to for the holidays.

Giant Pumpkin Bowl What you need: 1 large pumpkin, pumpkin carving tool, pencil, large stainless steel or plastic bowl.
How to make it: Place the large bowl upside down over the top of the pumpkin and trace around the edge of the bowl with a pencil. Remove the bowl and cut about a quarter of an inch above the circle, all the way around the top of the pumpkin. Fit your bowl in the top of the pumpkin hole. Now fill the bowl with a bunch of Halloween treats, or with a sauce or appetizers to serve at a holiday dinner.

Pumpkin Eyeball What you need: 1 medium to small white pumpkin, wooden skewer, small foam paint brush, and black, blue, red, and white craft paint. How to make it: Using a foam brush, paint the stem and around the stem of the pumpkin with black paint. Next, paint a circle of blue paint around the black, which makes a blue eye color. (Feel free to use any colored eye paint you want to.) Following the grooves in your white pumpkin, use a wooden skewer to draw some fine red detailed lines with red paint, making it look like a bloodshot eyeball. With white paint, use the same skewer to draw lines on the black and blue part of the eye to make it look more realistic with a reflecting light effect. Remember, it is better to use too little paint than too much paint. You can always add more.

Pumpkin Bird Feeder What you need: 1 medium pumpkin, carving tool, some sturdy twigs, twine, a tack, and birdseed. How to make it: Cut your pumpkin in half and scoop out the seeds, leaving a 1/2-inch-thick wall. Cut a groove about the same size as the wall into the rim for pumpkin seeds. Poke holes and insert twigs around the pumpkin to create perches for the birds. Take two lengths of twine and tie them together in the center, tacking the knot to the bottom of the pumpkin. Fill the feeder bottom with birdseed and hang where you think the birds will enjoy. Make sure to hang the feeder out of direct sunlight, to help the pumpkin last longer.

Is the Flu Vaccine a Good Idea for Your Family? by Sanford Health with Dr. Edward Mailloux, Sanford Children’s
T
he flu season is from November to April, with most cases occurring between late December and early March, but the vaccine is usually offered between September and midNovember (and may be given at other times of the year). Getting the shot before the flu season is in full force gives the body a chance to build up immunity to, or protection from, the virus. Although you can get a flu shot well into flu season, it’s best to try to get it earlier rather than later. However, even when there are only 2 or 3 months left in the flu season, it’s still a good idea to get protection if the vaccine is available in your area. A non-shot option, the nasal mist vaccine, is now available, but because it contains weakened live flu viruses, it is not for people with weakened immune systems or certain health conditions.

The nasal mist vaccine is only for healthy, non-pregnant people between the ages of 2 and 49 years. Check with your doctor to see if your child can — or should — get this type of flu vaccine.
Who Should Get the Flu Shot? Federal health officials now urge flu vaccination for all kids 6 months of age and older. Kids under the age of 9 who get a flu shot for the first time will receive two separate shots a month apart. It can take about 1 or 2 weeks after the shot for the body to build up protection to the flu.
High-risk kids who should get the flu vaccine include those who: • Were born prematurely and are at increased risk of developing lung problems if they get influenza • Have chronic heart or lung disorders, including asthma • Have chronic diseases such as diabetes mellitus, kidney disease, severe anemia, or immune deficiency (including HIV/ AIDS and immunosuppression caused by drugs) • Are on long-term aspirin therapy and may be at risk for Reye syndrome if they catch the flu • Live with someone in any of the high-risk groups above
If you want to get the flu shot and aren’t in the high-risk groups listed above, talk to your doctor about vaccine availability.
People who should not get a flu shot include: • Anyone who’s severely allergic to eggs and egg products (ingredients for flu shots are grown inside eggs, so tell your

doctor if your child is allergic to eggs or egg products before he or she gets a flu shot) • Infants under 6 months old • Anyone who’s ever had a severe reaction to a flu vaccination (although most people do not experience any side effects from the flu shot) • Anyone with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), a rare condition that affects the immune system and nerves • Anyone with a fever
How the Flu Vaccine Works Flu vaccines are available as a shot or nasal mist. Given as an injection, the flu shot contains killed flu viruses that will not cause the flu, but will prepare the body to fight off infection by the live flu virus. Getting a shot of the killed virus means a person is protected against that particular type of live flu virus if he or she comes into contact with it. The nasal mist vaccine contains weakened live flu viruses. Because it contains live viruses, the mist is not for people with weakened immune systems or certain health conditions. “Even if you or your child may have gotten the vaccine last year, that won’t protect you from getting the flu this year, because the protection wears off and flu viruses constantly change. That’s why the vaccine is updated each year to include the most current strains of the virus,” says Dr. Edward Mailloux,
Sanford Children’s Clinic. The flu vaccine reduces the average person’s chances of catching the flu by up to 80% during the season. Because the vaccine prevents infection with only a few of the viruses that can cause flu-like symptoms, it isn’t a guarantee against getting sick. But even if someone who’s gotten the shot gets the flu, symptoms usually will be fewer and milder.
Side Effects Again, most people do not experience any side effects from the flu shot. It may cause soreness or swelling at the site of the injection or mild side effects, such as headache or low-grade fever. If your child does have symptoms after getting the flu shot, put a warm compress on the injection site to ease soreness or swelling, and give acetaminophen or ibuprofen for headache or low-grade fever. Do not give your child aspirin unless your doctor instructs you to do so. A common myth about the flu shot is that it can actually cause the flu. But the flu shot used in the United States is made from killed influenza viruses, which means that it’s impossible to catch the flu by receiving it. However, because the nasal spray flu vaccine is made from live viruses, it may cause mild flu-like symptoms, including runny nose, headache, vomiting, muscle aches, and fever.

Tucker’s Spooky Halloween by Leslie McGuirk For Halloween, Tucker’s owner always dresses him as something cute, like a pumpkin with a little hat. But this year Tucker doesn’t want to be cute - he wants to be spooky. Time to put his paws to the cause before the trick-or-treaters arrive! Kids will laugh at his efforts to make just the right statement. Tucker rolls out a very creative costume in a funny Halloween story young children will appreciate. Paperback with DVD. Ages 2 yrs - 5 yrs Candlewick Press
The Great Bear by Libby Gleeson Once there was a dancing circus bear who spent her days in a cold, hard cage. Each night she was led to the town square, where acrobats, trapeze artists, and clowns performed for a boisterous crowd. The bear performed, too, year in and year out, lifting her feet and swaying to the music of trumpets, drums, and cymbals. As she danced, some people clapped, and many poked her with sticks or threw stones. One night, however, the bear did not dance. She stood very still. And then she let out a mighty roar. This deeply affecting tale of a bear who escapes cruelty to find a mythical release will resonate with all who love animals, while offering a universal message about freedom and dignity. Ages 5 yrs - 10 yrs Candlewick Press
And Then Comes Halloween by Tom Brenner As soon as geese fly south, children take autumn’s cue to start their preparations: it’s almost Halloween! With poetic language and vivid collage illustrations, Tom Brenner and Holly Meade follow all the familiar rituals, from hanging paper skeletons to carving pumpkins, from costumemaking to trick-or-treating. Halloween lovers will be eager to join them on this lively and lyrical journey. Now in paperback. Ages 4 yrs - 7 yrs Candlewick Press Excalibur The Legend of King Arthur by Tony Lee Arthur Pendragon was raised in obscurity, but fate will not leave him to the shadows. In a moment of desperate need, he draws a legendary sword from its stonebed and commences the life he was born to lead. A series of adventures sparked by the elusive wizard Merlin launches Arthur through love and betrayal, domination and defeat, and toward the prophesied end awaiting him. Merging a faithful retelling with dynamic illustrations, EXCALIBUR invites longtime fans to relive the legend and those new to the story to experience it up close in a vivid graphic adventure. Ages 10 yrs and up Candlewick Press
Some Things Are Scary by Florence Parry Heide You’re skating downhill, but you don’t know how to stop. You’re having your hair cut, and you suddenly realize ...they’re cutting it too short. There’s no question about it: some things are scary. And never have common bugaboos been exposed with more comic urgency than in this masterful mix of things horrible and humiliating, monstrous or merely unsettling. Perfectly pitched to a kid’s perspective, Florence Parry Heide’s witty text and Jules Feiffer’s over-thetop illustrations will get even the most anxious recipients laughing, while reassuring them (no matter how old they are) that they’re not alone in their fears. Ages 3 yrs and up Candlewick Press
AlphaOops!: H Is for Halloween by Alethea Kontis Ack! It’s time for the show, and A isn’t ready. But then again, Halloween can only start with one letter, no matter how the A-B-Cs normally go! The misbehaving alphabet is back, and there’s no telling who will take the stage next. Z for zombie? P for pirate? Will X think of something good in time? Neon-bright, comically detailed illustrations show a cacophony of costumed letters, each with a mind and personality all its own. Along the bottom, tiny pumpkins arrange the players in proper order, making this alphabet story letter-perfect for Halloween. H gets top billing — but a stubborn B has something scary to say —as the inside-out alphabet gives a howl-arious Halloween performance. Ages 4 yrs - 8 yrs Candlewick Press

antics of her grandkids, is a dedicated scrapbooker, and is the first and only person I’ve ever interviewed to send me home with a bag of cucumbers from her garden (thank you Karen, they were delicious). While Karen’s strength is not readily apparent, it is there just behind the smile. Karen is a breast cancer survivor. Diagnosed in 2006, she won her initial bout with the disease, but it returned again later in the form of brain and lung cancer. After another long struggle, today Karen is cancer free. We sat down with Karen to hear her story of love, strength, and determination in the face of incredible adversity.
But you had other things going on at that time too, correct?
How did you initially find out you had cancer?
Those first few doctor appointments afterward I was pretty nervous, thinking, ‘what are they going to find?’ But after a few months you start to get more comfortable, more relaxed.
I had a mammogram late in 2005 that showed a slight shadow. The radiologist said ‘let’s look again in six months.’ Bad idea. By that time I had stage two breast cancer. I was still teaching at the time and would miss one or two Fridays a month to take chemotherapy treatments. The kids at school were so great and I think it was a unique learning experience for them. They would ask a lot of questions and it helped remove the mystery and helped them understand.
Yes, my mother was not doing well. I was teaching in Pierre and she was in Sioux Falls, so between my first and second chemo treatments we moved her out to Pierre, but before my second round of chemo started, she passed away.
That had to be a terrible blow. It was an awful lot to process, but in a way it made me more determined to get better for my family.
When you initially recovered from breast cancer did you think you were done with it forever?
So after your first bout with cancer, you decided to go through a career change. That seems like an odd time to do something like that. What was your motivation? I’d always been interested in nursing and health care, but when I was initially in college back in the ‘70s, it just didn’t work

out for me to pursue it. After the 2006-07 school year, I had enough time in teaching to take early retirement. So I did and moved back to Sioux Falls to start taking some pre-requisite courses for nursing. I’m not a big risk taker, so that was a big jump for me! It worked out wonderfully because I stayed with my son and his family and had a chance to spend some time with them.
I cried because I knew it was now stage four and very serious. I was scheduled for surgery two days later. When they did the surgery, they told me that it would go one of two ways; either the tumor would be encapsulated where they could potentially remove it, or it could be widespread where there’s not much they could do. It turned out mine was encapsulated and they were able to remove it. It was the size of an egg. After surgery, I was kind of in shock, but after a while I said to myself, ‘you can make what you want of this, but you better go into it thinking you are going to win this battle.’
But shortly after you started back in school, the cancer returned? Yes, I made it through first semester, but in December of 2008 I started to feel really tired. Very tired. By February I started having these terrible headaches, which I thought were from sinuses. Eventually I had a CAT scan and you know usually the techs don’t say anything to you, but mine came out and said, “We’re calling your doctor right now.’ I knew it was bad news and to be honest I sort of sensed it coming. The cancer was back.
Cancer treatment can be so physically and mentally draining. How were you able to focus on recovering while also going to school and caring for your family? I think having my family around me and going to school definitely helped me. Having things to live for is a real motivator. I like to keep busy and don’t do well sitting around. For example, after I had my brain surgery on a Friday, they pumped me full of steroids to help my recovery. Well, steroids make me really hyper. I finally decided I had to do something so I went back to class Monday.
In fact, the cancer was now in your brain and lungs. What was your reaction upon hearing the news?

You went back to class three days after brain surgery? Yes, I had a little plastic wrap around my head to cover the incision but there I was.
Did you ever have moments where you thought you weren’t going to make it? For a while, the treatments I was getting to clear up the cancer in my lungs were not working. It was not looking good. The doctor told me if things didn’t change I had maybe two years left. So I sat down with my daughter and made plans. We planned my funeral, wrote out my end of care wishes, and got a lot of things done that summer. It sounds odd but it gave me peace of mind to know those things were in place.
But you never gave up? No, but there were times when I was so tired and sick and just didn’t want to do it anymore, but my family would give me strength. They’d say ‘you can do it, Mom’ and I’d keep going. I’m cancer free today, but someday it may come back, and if does, I’ll fight it then too.
In your treatment you lost your hair. It’s coming back now but you have a “no wig” policy, correct? They just aren’t for me. I’ll wear hats, but wigs are too hot and itchy. I always thought I had enough going on without dealing with that. So, I just go as I am and if people think I look funny, that’s their problem. Plus, I guess when people see me, it helps create awareness, and that’s a positive too.
What advice do you have for others going through cancer treatment? Just to use your time wisely and accept any help you can get to allow you to concentrate on healing. You can’t beat it all by yourself. Your strength will come from those around you.
You’ve gone on to earn your nursing degree. Are you excited about the future? Yes, I have my degree and am looking for a position. Ideally I’d like to work with cancer patients because I think I have a lot to offer. I’m just excited to get started. I like to keep busy, you know (smiles).

Why All the Barking? by Dick Rogen, DVM Horizon Pet Care, 1224 E. Holly Blvd., Brandon, SD (605) 582.8445
M
y dogs have a lot to say! But sometimes they have a little too much to tell me and the rest of the world. One would like to know exactly what they are saying, but as a Veterinarian it might hurt my feelings. Dogs have a variety of ways to communicate and sometimes it can be confusing to us. I know that in the middle of the night, Piper barks for two reasons. It’s either, “I want to go outside to potty,” or the “You better not come into my house, or else,”. The two barks are completely different. I know that my dogs feel that their primary job after dark or when I am not at home is to protect the house. This is a sound we should not discourage. It has the low tone and warning sound that help keep us safe. You would be foolish to enter a house with a fierce, low, angry bark. It’s the other barking that drives pet owners crazy. Some pets will bark at every little noise or movement that occurs. These are dogs that are fearful or lack confidence. They are quick to warn and appear to be nervous. Their barking can be decreased by more stimulation in their world. Leave a TV or radio on when you leave. They need to see more of the world to lower their sensitivity to sound and motion. Never pet a dog and say it will be OK when they are barking in fear or anxiety. You unknowingly, have just praised them for undesirable behavior. I think it is our nurturing side that wants to calm them, but it is more effective to use a solid confident voice to tell them to settle down. They need to know that you are in charge and not worried.

PETS
If you yell when your dog barks, they think you are barking with them. They are hearing that you agree with them. You need to correct them in other ways to slow down the barking. I will use a can of pennies or several rocks in a can to shake. Do not use your voice, but simply shake the can until the barking stops. It may not be instant, but it takes the fun out of some types of barking. The stimulus to stop them from barking has to be immediate, and repeatable to stop some canines from barking. They make a remote barking sensor that emits an irritating noise that humans cannot hear, when a dog barks. It can be very effective. It is immediate, stops when they stop barking and will restart if they decide to tell more stories. They also can be used outdoors to stop a neighbor’s dog from barking, I have had to use a citronella bark collar with my Jack Russell, Millie. It sprays citronella in front of her nose every time she barks. She knows what stops and starts it and will not bark with it on. Its limitations are that if Piper barks, Millie gets a whiff of citronella! The shock collars are not my favorite. They are effective with some dogs, but I have seen far too many burns on their neck and personality changes with them. They will also fire if another dog barks near them. If you have a barking dog at your house, try to figure out what is starting it; change their environment and keep them inside for your neighbors’ sake if nothing works. I am convinced that some dogs just have a lot to say.

THOMAS L. FAWICK (1889-1978) By Bruce BlaKe
THOMAS L. FAWICK (1889-1978) Sioux Falls, Fawick Park
T
homas L. Fawick was born in Sioux Falls and attended school here through the fourth grade. His genius was soon revealed. He became an inventor, and in 1906, at the age of 17, Fawick built a rudimentary two-cylinder auto, the Silent Sioux. Two years later Fawick incorporated his own motor car company. He assembled the nation’s first four-door automobile: the right-hand drive, four-cylinder, three-speed Fawick Flyer. In all, he produced eleven autos, the only motor cars ever built in Sioux Falls.Fawick left Sioux Falls and became a multi-millionaire. During his career
he was granted over 200 patents for industrial clutches and transmissions, violins, sound systems, and golf club grips. In 1971 he gave this reproduction of David to the city and Augustana College. The original David was created in 1504 at Florence, Italy, by sculptor Michelangelo. The statue depicts a young, confident David poised to lash out with his sling at the giant Goliath. The masterpiece has charmed viewers for centuries.
DEDICATED IN 2003 BY THE MINNEHAHA COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY AND THE CITY OF SIOUX FALLS IN HONOR OF JOSH BLAKE
Fawick Flyer Delivery Truck A Fawick Flyer was the second auto delivery truck to appear on the streets of Sioux Falls. It hauled loads weighing up to one ton and was commonly used for baggage and parcel delivery. The only known existing Fawick Flyer is on exhibit in the Old Courthouse Museum. All Flyer’s had right-hand drive and an upholstered seat similar to those of a very fine horse-drawn buggy. Image owner: Siouxland Heritage Museums.

Coats Fairgrounds Accident On June 14, 1912, a Fawick Flyer, capable of a top speed of 83 m.p.h., competed in the Elks Convention auto races at the Coats Fairgrounds, present-day Riverdale Park. After colliding with another car during the seventh race, the Flyer spun off the dirt track, overturned, and slid into the nearby Big Sioux River. An excited crowd quickly gathered to inspect the damage. Image owner: Siouxland Heritage Museums.
