Custom Hand Stamped Jewelry Just in Time for the Holidays
Say Anything…Jewelry in Uptown Sioux Falls S till have some special people on your shopping list for the holiday? Try a custom keepsake creation from Say Anything…Jewelry by Stephanie Wilde. Wilde creates all of the personalized, keepsake items by hand, using such materials as sterling silver, copper, brass. Although Wilde has had her business for two years, and opened a retail location at 4th & Main in September, she doesn’t have a background in either jewelry or working with metals. “I was actually working at a local restaurant as a server and broke my foot in 2009,” says Wilde. “I had seen hand stamped jewelry before on the Etsy website and became fascinated by it,
so while I was laid up, I started doing some research. Little did I know then that I would have my own business and storefront just two years later.” Wilde went online looking at examples of stamped jewelry, read up on different metals and techniques for stamping. Then, she ordered some pieces to try. “I don’t consider myself artsy or crafty at all,” she says with a smile, “but I discovered that I kind of had a natural knack for doing this.” For the first two years, Wilde worked from her kitchen counter. She established a website, a site on Etsy.com and a Facebook page to get her business going. Now, her order book is full,

and she is shipping her creations all over the world. She can typically fill and ship orders within 2-3 weeks, although it could take a little longer during peak times like Christmas. The store is part of the Uptown Sioux Falls area, located in the historic Tri-State Creamery Building next to Oh My Cupcakes!, A Taste of the Big Apple and Salon Britori. She says the location is a perfect fit. “The businesses in this area each have a specialty niche, and I think the clientele that come here are looking for things that are eclectic and unique.” Creating the hand stamped jewelry pieces is very detailed
work. Wilde does the lettering free hand using a hammer and the letter and design stamps – which are almost like thick nails with the design at the tip. Letters range in size from 1/16” to 1/8”. Her design stamps include a heart, martini glass, + sign, flower, crescent moon, sun, baby foot, dragonfly, butterfly, cross, star, paw print and princess crown. Wilde says she does her best to try to space everything evenly; however, slight variations are to be expected. “These are what make each custom piece unique and also add character and charm,” she says. “But even with those variations, I would never send out an item I would not be proud to put my name on. I stand by every piece I make, from both an artistic and quality standpoint.” Wilde can stamp on metal pieces for necklaces, wine charms, bracelets, cuff links, key chains and even pet tags. She can pair her stamped pieces with specialty charms like angel wings or with Swarovski birthstone crystals and pearls. One necklace design has two sizes of metal rings with a pearl in the middle. Wilde says this makes a great gift for a grandmother because the two rings provide more room for the grandchildren’s names. Wilde’s creations make great gifts for mothers, brides,

wedding parties and friends, but she has many items for men as well. She can use a variety of finishes on the metal to make them shiny or textured, and finds her “rugged” finishes are great for men’s gifts. Ideas for the jewelry come from many sources, says Wilde. “A lot of the trends actually come from Hollywood – what you see on the big screen and on the red carpet.” She adds that she loves to create on her own – mixing shapes, sizes, fonts and finishes – but she also has fun working with customers to create unique items tailored to the person receiving the jewelry. “My Facebook page has tons of photos,” says Wilde, “so I always encourage people to go there for ideas. But it’s great when people stop in and look at some of the pictures of finished jewelry and the raw pieces, and then we start bouncing ideas around to create a one-of-a-kind keepsake.” Customers can also create a “wish list” that Wilde keeps on file for holidays, birthdays, anniversaries and more. “That wish list makes it really easy for husbands to shop for those special occasions,” she adds with a laugh. Coming down to the store also makes a great “DaddyDaughter Date Night,” she says, where they can browse around
and design a special keepsake gift for Mom. Wilde offers “Bling Nights” at the store, where a customer can invite guests in for a private party. The host can earn up to 20% of the evening sales in free jewelry. Wilde encourages people to schedule soon if they want to host a party before the holidays. And, she says, any holiday orders should be placed in November. f you are scratching your head trying to come up with a new idea for your child’s birthday party, don’t worry! Your next party can be a piece of cake, thanks to Paige Andersen. Andersen is the owner of Piece of Cake Parties by Paige. While Andersen realizes there are many different party venues available to families in the Sioux Falls area, she created her business to help take some of the stress out of birthday party planning for parents and to help create fun and unique experiences for children and their friends. “I think this approach really appeals to parents,” Andersen says. “They simply pick the date, time, and the location – like their home, a park or a community center – and I come prepared with all the necessary supplies to keep their child and guests entertained.” The family can pick a theme from Andersen’s suggested list, and then she provides one hour of activities to engage the birthday child and their guests. Activities may include games, activities and experiments or “make and take” crafts. Themes include: Birthday Beauty- All things to pamper the birthday girl and her guests. Homemade lip balm and fizzing bath bombs are a perfect way to relax. Blast Off!! - Planes and rockets take center stage. Fear Factor - Disgustingly good fun! Adrenaline-pumping

bigger than 9, there is a fee of $5 per additional child. While most of her parties are held in Sioux Falls, Andersen says she is willing to travel outside the city. She would work with the parents on a negotiable mileage fee for distances 25 or more miles outside of Sioux Falls. Andersen asks that parties be booked at least two weeks in advance to allow plenty of time for creating that perfect birthday experience. She arrives at the party location approximately 30 minutes before the start time to set things up. She has some tips for parents thinking about booking a unique party experience with her. “I want to be sure the kids have a good time, and to do that, we need to have room to play,” says Andersen. “There should be a table area with chairs for all participants, as well as additional space for activities. It is also very important for parents to let me know in advance if the birthday child or any guests have allergies I should be aware of.” Andersen has a unique background that brought her to this party planning business. She graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in Elementary Education. She then worked as a substitute teacher and worked at the science center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. After moving to Sioux Falls, Andersen spent two years at the Kirby Science Discovery Center. Andersen says this business is a perfect fit for her. “My experience working in the informal science world gives me an excellent background to provide unique, hands-on, and exciting activities for kids of all ages.”

“I
have great infatuation with this house. It is a quarter century worth of work,” Scott Christensen tells me of his Cape Cod style home in the center of Sioux Falls. 25 years ago, he and former wife, Frances, decided to remodel. Enter designer Douglas Helkenn. We told him, “We want the home to be open, inviting, and give us the ability to entertain.” With the help of Helkenn and a builder, Carlos Roa, smaller rooms gave way to an open, lofty space that still feels warm and inviting. With soft jazz playing from the sound system, we take a tour of the home. “Top and bottom it is only about 2000 square feet, but it feels larger, Scott says. He adds, “You can put 50 people in here for a party — we made it kitchen-centric.” A large kitchen
island is elegantly appointed, with striking pendant lighting. “People struggle with hiring a professional designer, but it was the best investment we made in the whole project. They know where you should put money.” Scott points out the island countertop that has the rich look of granite. “This is a laminate countertop,” he says, “the difference in price could have been thousands of dollars. Douglas told me he didn’t mind spending my money, but this isn’t the place to spend it.” Scott points out, “The other thing is the crown moldings; everything is stained mahogany cherry, but that’s just plain pine instead of hardwood. This gave us the money to spend on window treatments.” The window treatments are a bold, graphic

design in rich warm colors and are focal points in the room. “When Douglas described what he wanted to do for the window treatments, I kind of hesitated, but he told me that if you do

The room is enhanced by pops of color on the walls. Scott says, “These art pieces are original from regional artists. For the last ten years I have tried to pick up one or two pieces.” Most of

room that reminds me of a high-end menswear shop, with tailored clothing hung immaculately. “This turned out to be the coolest room in the house,” Scott says, “ It was a second bedroom that wasn’t being used so I suggested we make a gentleman’s closet.” Usually older homes don’t have much closet space. I took a room that could be a negative and turned it into one of the most enjoyable rooms in the house!” It’s time to leave, and Scott shares, “I’m really blessed to be in the same house 25 years now. I’m humbled and have tremendous gratitude for living in a great house, in a great town, in a great state; I never take it for granted.” Eloquent words from a man with elegant taste. Peanut Butter Cups
Quick and Easy Chocolate Drops
1 cup creamy peanut butter, divided 4 1/2 teaspoons butter, softened 1/2 cup powdered sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips 4 milk chocolate candy bars ( 1.55 ounces each) coarsely chopped

Combine 1/2 cup peanut butter, butter, powdered sugar and salt in a small bowl and set aside. Melt the chocolate chip, candy bars and remaining peanut butter in a double boiler and stir until smooth. Drop teaspoonfuls of chocolate mixture into paper-lined mini muffin cups. Top each with a 3/4 teaspoon of peanut butter mixture and then cover with another teaspoon of chocolate mixture. Refrigerate for 2-3 hours. Makes 3 dozen.

Melt the candy coating in a double-boiler and stir until smooth. Add peanut butter and mix well. Stir in the three remaining ingredients and drop onto waxed paper. Allow to set for an hour. Makes about 9-10 dozen candies.

inety percent is a big number, but that’s how many American households will have turkey for Thanksgiving. Nine out of ten. And yes, my house will be part of the ninety percent. My beloved and her family love turkey, so even though I will suggest a standing rib roast or leg of lamb, they want what they want. Consequently, I will roast a big bird. And like most of you, I have my preferred way of cooking the bird. And it’s no secret; I stole it from Alton Brown of the Food Network. Apparently, his method has become America’s go-to recipe for Thanksgiving. So I won’t bore you with how to cook Ol’
Tom. Heck, most of you have probably cooked far more turkeys than I have, so there is nothing to teach you. If you want to know more, Google and Mr. Brown can show you the way. Instead, let’s explore the stuff that goes along with the bird; the wonderful world of side dishes! While a 20-pound gobbler from Minnesota will get all the glory, to me the beauty of the Thanksgiving Feast is in the variety that goes far beyond light and dark meat. No, for me Thanksgiving history started in 1955, when Dorcas Reilly was working in the Home Economics department of the Campbell Soup Company. In a moment of marketing genius, she created the now famous Green Bean Casserole as a way to help boost the sales of canned green beans and Campbell’s Cream of Mushroom soup. You can debate about whether to stuff the bird or cook the dressing separately, but you cannot argue with the necessity of the Green Bean Casserole topped with French fried onions. I do, however, take a few liberties with Dorcas Reilly’s original
recipe. First, I like to add some caramelized onions and sautéed mushrooms. And for some unknown reason, Mrs. Reilly didn’t add garlic to her hotdish. I’m sure it was just an oversight or a typographical error. Either way, I add a clove or two to make up for that negligence. Now, let’s talk cranberries. I have a complicated relationship with the tart red orbs. While they are an important part of the tradition, for a long time I wasn’t a fan. You see, my grandmother took advantage of the modern convenience of canned cranberry sauce. I’m sure I was in my late teens before I realized that

cranberries were a fruit and not just a ribbed, gelatinous substance. Other the other hand, my beloved’s family worships the little red fruit and they often celebrate Thanksgiving with two or more cranberry dishes, ranging from tart relishes to sweet and fluffy almost dessert-like salads. And each dark-red dish contains actual fresh cranberries. Not a can of cranberry sauce anywhere in sight. That’s hard to compete with, so I think this year I’ll just mix everyone a cocktail of vodka and cranberry juice and hope no one notices that there aren’t any berries on the table. Dressing or stuffing? That is a big question. You can call it stuffing if you want, but I’m not a fan of putting anything inside the carcass; at least not anything I intend to eat later. And even with a 20-pound turkey, there just isn’t enough room inside the bird. I like dressing and I don’t want to limit how much goes in my belly by the volume of the bird’s. So what kind? You can’t go wrong with the traditional sage breadcrumb variety, but if you go that direction, you need to decide whether or not to add sausage. I say yes, but that is up to you. Growing up, my mom made wonderful, rich wild rice dressing. Nutty and textural; it was awesome. There are so many varieties, it begins to boggle the mind. There are those who believe no feast is complete without oyster stew. I am not one of those people. If you like it, more power to you, but I think it’s a waste of good oysters. I could say the same about creamed corn. If it’s your thing, knock yourself out, but I prefer to keep the kernels whole. Some side dishes are not debatable. Mashed potatoes and gravy, for example; you simply must have mashed potatoes and gravy. Period. End of discussion. Whether you like your spuds smashed and still a little chunky or whipped smooth and creamy is a matter of preference. But there will be potatoes. And if there’s not gravy… well, that’s just too scary to even think about. What about sweet potatoes, you say? I like sweet potatoes, but I have to admit I think hiding such a beautiful tuber beneath a layer of marshmallows is a crime. Roasted, baked, mashed or French fried: all great ways to treat yams and their cousins, but save the Stay-Pufts for your hot chocolate. Last year I skipped the sweet potatoes and no one missed them. In their place I roasted carrots, turnips and parsnips then pureed them all together with some sage, butter and a little chicken stock. That is a dish that will surely make a return visit this November. Dessert? That is a whole different article. And after the turkey and all the sides, I’m usually too full for pie. In fact, I’m getting tired just thinking about all of this. I’m ready for nap. Wake me before Black Friday. Do yourself a favor, eat something good today. said, “You should change it to ‘Never Fear, Under Wear is Here!’” Life really changes when your kid becomes a good reader, especially when he’s trying to decipher bumper stickers that read, “I usually wake up grumpy, but some mornings I let him sleep in.” Anyway, back to wine… or Under Wine, that is. I have a whole list of Under Wines- these are wines that I consider under dogs in the wine world. The reason they are under dogs is that at some point, someone, somewhere, somehow discounted it as a contender... just an underrated chump. And just like your favorite sports team, you root for them, you cheer them on, and you celebrate when they pull off an under dog victory. How sweet it is… here are my top three under dogs of the wine world. Applaud them as you drink them with pride and appreciate their underestimated quality. #1 goes to Merlot. Yes, you read that right. I, the person least likely to recommend a Merlot to anyone, am giving Merlot its place in the realm of all that is good wine. There are some Merlots that are outstanding and always have been, like anything from the Howell Mountain appellation in Napa Valley or from the Right Bank in Bordeaux. But in a nutshell,
Merlot has been living in the shadow of Pinot Noir ever since the movie Sideways came out and became a cult hit. Since then, Pinot Noir sales have skyrocketed and Merlot sales have plummeted. Why? One, Hollywood sells, and two, people love to drink what everyone else is drinking. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen a table of six sitting in one of the country club’s restaurants, and the server asks if anyone would like anything to drink. The first five people say, “No, water’s fine,” and then the sixth person says, “I’ll have a raspberry iced tea.” All of a sudden, the first five people go, “Oh that sounds good, I’ll have that too.” The power of the palate is not be underestimated… #2 goes to Valpolicella. I’m sorry but, it just wouldn’t be right if I didn’t include an Italian wine in this article, as a lot of Italians are underestimated. And if you’ve ever watched an episode of The Sopranos, never underestimate an Italian. Actually, what’s beautiful about Italian wine is how simple the native grapes are on their own, but how much potential they hold when they are used to their maximum abilities. Take Sangiovese for example. On its own, it’s a pretty good wine. Young, cherry flavors on the palate, and sometimes bitter is how Sangiovese is often described. But, if you plant the same vine just south of

Florence in a little town called Greve, you get a complex, wonderful wine called Chianti. Simple, yet amazing. So, now take Valpolicella on its own: A nice, light-bodied, fruitforward wine from the northeast corner of Italy, made with grapes from just outside of Verona. Valpolicella is a great introductory wine for the novice Italian wine drinker. And as you become acquainted with this unique grape, you’ll discover that Valpolicella has so much more potential. #3 goes to Portugal. When’s the last time you had something from Portugal? Maybe you’ve had a nice Port lately. Maybe you’ve had a nice Madeira. But chances are, the closest you’ve been in touch with Portugal is the cork you just pulled out that bottle of wine you opened last night. Portugal is responsible for 55% of the world’s cork supply and accounts for 5.3 million acres of cork oak trees. Now, with the apparent shortage of cork production, the advent of synthetic corks and winemakers switching to screw caps has relieved the pressure on Portugal somewhat. Cork is becoming the underdog of the wine bottle closure battle because of the roughly 7 to 10% leakage rate that cork allows versus a synthetic or screw cap closure. To me, unscrewing a cap or popping a waxy synthetic cork is too dull. There’s too much history, too much tradition, too much romance in uncorking a bottle of wine for me not to pick a bottle with a real cork in it. If it’s corked, so be it. I return it and get a new one because every winemaker stands behind his/her wine… cork or no cork. If you’ve ever watched Rudy, or pulled for the Patriots when they’re down by 13 with 2 minutes to go, or cheered on your high school’s soccer team when they just didn’t have a chance…you know that anything is possible. The wine world is full of endless possibilities, and, as in life, there are winners, there are losers, and there are those that say nothing is impossible. magine a cool evening in November — there’s a heavy breeze as South Dakota starts to dish out the beginning of winter and the family is cooped up inside for the night. Rather than lounging in front of the TV critiquing the contestants on Dancing With The Stars, a bowl of Easy Mac keeping you warm and filling the emptiness in your tummy, you could be around the table for dinner. Rather than ignoring your family, you’re passing around nutritious food, sharing about the day, and interacting on a more personal level than agreeing that Nancy Grace has two left feet. This scenario of sharing a meal together seems a tradition of the past, with all of the activities going on in young peoples’ lives today. More and more, soccer games, track meets, violin lessons, boy scouts and TV come before sitting down together as a family for a meal. Don’t get me wrong, studies show that the social benefits of being on a team and the intellectual benefits of learning to play an instrument are crucial to development, but so is family meal time. With the holiday season fast-approaching, it is a gentle reminder of how beneficial to family-life a dinner around the table can be. Think of the general warm, fuzzy feeling we have after a nice sit down with friends and family. Why wait for the holidays to feel it when you can get quality time with loved ones all week long? Many studies over the years have linked eating with the family to healthier lifestyles as children grow up, and family dinners provide the opportunity to “put it on the table” and grow closer and healthier as a unit. According to WebMD, families who dine together consume more fruits and vegetables, and fewer fried foods and soda. Because thought is put into what is going onto the plate, family dinner allows for consumption of foods
from more food groups, and if “Lucy” sees Mom eating her peas, she’s more likely to follow the lead than if she’s not around to witness Mom having dinner. Nearly 1 in 5 children between the ages of 6 and 19 will be overweight, putting them at risk for heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and a number of other preventable illnesses. Younger children who eat dinner with the family are less likely to become overweight in the future, as family meal time can set the tone for future eating patterns. Rather than reaching for the Hot Pocket for dinner when Lucy gets to college, she might go to the cafeteria to consume foods that are part of a healthy, balanced diet not because it’s “cool”, but because this behavior has been part of her life since she was a toddler. Joseph Califano Jr. of the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA), states, “One of the simplest and most effective ways for parents to be engaged in their teens’ lives is by having frequent family dinners.” Mr. Califano is on to something when you consider that family dinner, even only a couple of times per week, has been linked to lower instances of drug and alcohol use and obesity in teens. Having this special time set aside each day helps kids learn to eat healthier and communicate openly with their family members. Not only that, but family dinners have been shown to reduce stress and tension in the home. Dinner time is a good time of the day to get some great nutrients in. When preparing dinner at home, aim to “Taste the Rainbow”...no, don’t fill a bowl with Skittles - think colorful veggies. If time is against you on family dinner night, pick out a few healthy restaurants to carry out food on the way home from a 10 hour work day. Try to keep family dinner night nutritious and wholesome, as it may be one of the few nights during the week when there is time to eat healthily. famous Golden Gate Bridge. A short walk onto the bridge would be a treat, but the 1.7 mile drive from one vista point to another would be a very memorable experience. At midbridge, it is 220 feet above the water’s surface, making ships below look like small toy boats. City Guides of San Francisco offers free walking tours, teaching how the bridge got its name, how it was built, and other interesting tidbits. The center of San Francisco contains the Financial District, Market Street, and Union Square, which is the main shopping and hotel district. Visitors and residents alike traditionally ride on cable cars to tackle the steep inclines of the roads leading to the summit of Nob Hill and down to Fisherman’s Wharf, arguably the most popular destination in the city. This major fishing pier can be reached by cable car from Union Square, and offers plenty of fresh seafood and souvenirs for your friends and family. There are many shopping opportunities here including the Pier 39 shopping mall with restaurants as well. The sea lions at Pier 39 are a sight to see, and truly a unique experience. The many street vendors offer fresh street crab and other intriguing items, and the street performers feature every kind of music and art, both night and day. Ghiradelli Square is located right at the end of the Wharf, offering chocolate galore and ice cream next door. The Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum and the Wax Museum are also attractions not to be missed. Boat Tours are the key to getting a great view of San Francisco Bay, and Fisherman’s Wharf offers Bay Cruises and tours of Alcatraz, the small island that is designated as a National Historic Landmark. Alcatraz is an island located in the San Francisco Bay, just 1.5 miles away from the San Francisco shore. Alcatraz is the site of the oldest operating
lighthouse on the west coast of the United States, and is home to the abandoned federal prison once occupied by some of the most notorious criminals in the world. It is now open to tours as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and is reached by ferry ride from Pier 33. North Beach is also located in the center of San Francisco, and is known to locals and visitors as San Francisco’s Little Italy. It is a fabulous place to grab a delicious bite to eat and a relaxing glass of world-class wine. There are several cafes, clubs, and stylish restaurants and Italian bakeries in this quaint neighborhood. North Beach is also the historic center of the beatnik generation. Adjacent to North Beach is Chinatown, established in the 1840s and the oldest of North America. It is the largest Chinese community outside of Asia. Chinatown is known as a “city-within-a-city”, and offers hundreds of shops and restaurants with some very appealing specialties. Another popular destination in San Francisco, Haight-Ashbury is the famous location associated with the hippies, and is now a bohemian center of expensive boutique shops and chain stores. For those who love to shop, this would be another great place to spend your time. Yet another fantastic shopping experience is to be discovered at the Ferry Plaza Farmer’s Market, which is renowned throughout the country as one of the top farmer’s markets to visit. San Francisco’s best chefs and most famous farmers can occasionally be seen at the market. Open three days a week, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, the market offers vegetables, fruits, meats, eggs, herbs and flowers from regional ranchers and farmers. Garden, and the Conservatory of Flowers. Alamo Square is a residential neighborhood and park in San Francisco, consisting of four city blocks at the top of a hill overlooking the city. aron Gubbrud designed her backyard around the four young grandchildren she loves. When they come to visit, she pushes them on the tire swing, putters around the yard or jumps into the sandbox with them, scooping and building with a bucket of shovels, pails and trucks. “Boys have to have a sandbox and I wanted one big enough to play with them,” she says, beaming as she sifts through the sand with her one-year-old grandson, Kayen. “You need to have enough room to get your toes in the sand.” Until recently, the 68-year-old Sioux Falls woman was limited by a problem that her four grandchildren just couldn’t understand. Their lively, energetic grandma often had her plans changed by urinary incontinence. Karon had to think out every trip in advance and sometimes skip or cut short the activities she wanted to do. “How do you explain to two toddlers that we have to go home just as we get to the park,” Karon said, tickling the little boy’s sandy toes. “They just want to get on the swings and play.” For more than 10 years the retired teacher has had to work her schedule and lifestyle around bladder problems that left her suddenly having to run to the bathroom. But a therapy that uses an implantable device to help train the bladder has changed her life, she says. “I feel like it has just opened up my world,” Karon said. “There will be no stopping me now.” Limiting Lifestyle For a healthy, adventurous person, urinary incontinence was a maddening problem, Karon said. visited a new place she had to immediately figure out where the bathroom was located. Even something as simple as her morning cup of coffee had to be planned around the day’s events, timed to not put too much pressure on her overactive bladder. At any time of the day, she could suddenly lose control of her bladder when she coughed, laughed or sneezed. Bending her body in the wrong direction while sitting or standing sometimes put pressure on her bladder, leading to an embarrassing accident. This winter, she was enjoying herself at a formal dress event on a cruise when her bladder just suddenly leaked. “There you are at a cocktail party in your formal dress and it just happens,” said Karon, who refused to give up the travel and activity she loved. “I’m enough of a brat that I just would do the things that I wanted to do, but when you had problems, it was embarrassing and humiliating.” Karon sought medical help years ago, while working a demanding job as a teacher of students with severe emotional problems. She often had to wait hours before using the bathroom because she couldn’t leave her students unsupervised. She was told that her bladder issues were likely caused by injuries to her pelvic floor while having large babies – two of her children weighed

close to 11 pounds at birth. The only answer for her at that time was to use small catheters to fully remove all the urine from her bladder. She didn’t like the uncomfortable therapy and eventually quit it. Over the years, she just had to learn how to live with her condition, she thought.

A New Option This spring, her doctor suggested that she talk with a urogynecology specialist. She was a good candidate for a therapy called Interstim, an implantable device that stimulates the nerves that control the bladder with mild electrical pulses. Her urogynecologist said the therapy is appropriate for patients like Karon who have incontinence problems that are interfering with the quality of their life and have tried other treatments unsuccessfully. “It’s an extremely nice option because we can take the patients that have the worst of the worst conditions and it makes them some of our best patients,” Kevin Benson, MD said. “It’s life changing for these people.” Patients go in for a simple outpatient procedure to have a small wire placed in their back that is temporarily attached to the device, which uses a slight electrical impulse to help the brain control the bladder and muscles related to urinary function. They test the device for a few days to see if it improves their condition. About 70 percent will find it effective and go on to have the device implanted in a minimally invasive out-patient procedure. It takes only minutes to place the device and its battery, about the size of a 50-cent piece, under the skin. The device causes no damage and can be easily removed if it doesn’t work. “It’s an ongoing therapy that tends to continue to work over time,” Benson said. “Five years later, about 80 percent of patients are still getting the benefit.” Changing Her Life Karon said that she had no difficulty making the decision to try the device. The results were almost immediate, allowing her to be able to have control over her bladder for the first time in years. She’ll continue to have follow-up appointments with Benson to help her calibrate the device and make sure it is working properly. This summer, Karon enjoyed long walks, uninterrupted playing and even bike rides with her grandchildren. She was able to easily travel long distances and enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning, no matter what her plans were later in the day. “I wish I would have done this years ago,” Karon said, as she kissed her grandson’s smiling face. “I’m a totally new woman today.”

During the winter months, babies and toddlers are dealt a “double whammy,” said Dr. Sam Schimelpfenig, pediatrician with Avera Medical Group McGreevy 7th Avenue. “There are literally millions of viruses out there, and a baby or toddler has not yet built up immunity to many of them.” Plus, in the winter, more viruses are going around – not because it’s cold outside, but because people spend more time indoors, closer together, where viruses are more easily transmitted from person to person. Young children catch an average of eight to nine colds a year. “That’s why it may seem like they’re sick non-stop,” Dr. Schimelpfenig said. “They may catch a new cold before they’re over the last one.” By the time kids are age 4 to 5, they’ve built up immunity to many common viruses, and are sick less often. “Fortunately, that usually coincides with starting to school,” Dr. Schimelpfenig said. However, kids who weren’t in day care or exposed to other children during their early years might get sick more often as kindergartners than some of their peers.
The “big three” winter complaints are the common cold, stomach viruses and strep throat. The common cold is characterized by a runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, and perhaps a mild cough. In most cases, it’s over within five to seven days. Complications of a cold include ear infection, sinus infection or pneumonia. So if your child’s cold gets worse with a fever, or it just won’t go away, it’s a good idea to contact your doctor. Stomach viruses cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. These are usually over in three to five days. If your child can’t hold any food or water down, the biggest danger is dehydration. Signs of dehydration include a sunken “soft spot” in babies, a dry and sticky mouth, or scanty urination marked by fewer wet diapers than normal. Strep throat is a bacterial infection of the throat that causes a sore throat that looks red and may have white patches, plus fever and “ill” feeling. Because it’s a bacterial infection, strep throat has an easy cure – antibiotics. Parents often want a similar quick cure for colds – but that doesn’t exist. Antibiotics do not work on illnesses caused by a virus. “That can be frustrating to parents. For many of these illnesses, there’s not a lot we can do in terms of medications,”

Dr. Schimelpfenig said. “For colds and stomach viruses, it comes down to supportive care – which means keeping your child comfortable while his body fights it off.” Over-the-counter cough and cold medications may help ease symptoms for kids age 4 or older. Physicians do not recommend OTC remedies for children age 3 or younger. “These medications are not tested with infants, and there’s also the risk of accidental overdose,” Dr. Schimelpfenig said. For example, combination medications often include acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Motrin), and parents may give a “double dose” if they don’t realize that. An overdose of acetaminophen can cause serious liver damage. It’s better to clear out your child’s nose using saline and a bulb syringe, if the child is too young to blow his nose effectively. A humidifier in the home may also help soothe nasal passages. If your child develops a fever that is not brought down by Tylenol or Motrin, or is constantly coughing to the point that it interferes with eating or breathing, you should contact your health care provider. Emergency symptoms include a very high fever, or respiratory distress, marked by trouble breathing or a bluish cast to lips or fingertips due to lack of oxygen. Supplements like Vitamin C or zinc “won’t hurt” as long as you don’t overdo it. Yet nothing has been proven to prevent the onset of wintertime viruses, or to shorten the course of these illnesses, Dr. Schimelpfenig said. One preventative measure that is proven is an annual flu vaccine, for anyone over the age of 6 months. “Beyond that, the best prevention is frequent handwashing, because most viruses are transmitted by touching a contaminated surface, like a doorknob or toy, and then touching your mouth or your eyes,” Dr. Schimelpfenig said. hanksgiving is a holiday built around the big Fs; family, food…and okay, sometimes football. It is a time to gather with our loved ones and celebrate life’s many blessings. We do this by enjoying a meal so delicious and complete that its magic can be captured only once each year on that fourth Thursday of November. A meal like that doesn’t come in a box, or get handed through a drive-through window. All apologies to the men out there who know their way around a kitchen, but a meal of that magnitude usually comes from the skilled and loving hands of this country’s moms and grandmas. As a tribute to all the women who make Thanksgiving great, this month we feature one of those Thanksgiving angels – Dolly Ortman. Dolly is the proud matriarch of a family that includes six children, nine grandchildren, and five (number six is on the way) greatgrandchildren. By her own estimation, she’s prepared more than 50 Thanksgiving-day dinners for gatherings great and small, and her family swears by her magic Turkey Day touch. We sat down with Dolly to get her expert insight on creating a memorable holiday feast and we learned a great deal. Just don’t ask her to schedule dinner between football games.
Do you remember the first Thanksgiving Day dinner you prepared? Did it turn out well? I do remember that one. My husband Gene and I were newly married and were living on a naval base in California. That first dinner was me, him, and a buddy he had invited over. I wanted it be really good but I didn’t know much about cooking back then. Turns out I forgot to remove the giblets from the turkey! But they didn’t know the difference, I guess, until he started cutting and there they were (laughs). That was pretty memorable.
An auspicious beginning to be sure! How many people will you be expecting this year? Well let me think…It’s usually right around 30.
Impressive! What sort of preparation goes into making a meal for that many people? Does everybody pitch in? Because we do have so many, it’s kind of turned into a weeklong process. On Monday and Tuesday, I’ll bake buns – eight dozen. Then on Wednesday, I’ll make pies in the morning and that evening I’ll get the turkeys ready to go. The kids bring

One tradition we have for the adults is to enjoy a Tom and Jerry before we eat. They are a good appetizer. When we are ready to sit down, we all hold hands and say grace. salads and other things, which is great, but I still like to do a lot of it. I used to think I was the only one who should do it, but I’m kinda getting over that (smiles).
I get them thawed out, stuffed, and ready the night before and leave them covered in the fridge. That way they are ready to go the next day. A lot of people get up really early to do this, but I am not much of a morning person.
So did I hear you right? Turkeys? As in plural? Yes, we used to get one great big one, but it seemed the bigger ones were tougher and not as good as the smaller ones. So we get two 12 or 13 pounders and they seem to be much more tender and flavorful.

Every family’s Thanksgiving Day meal traditions are a little different. Are there any special things that are always part of the Ortman family feast? I suppose we are like most families. We have turkey, cranberries, mashed potatoes and gravy, lots of salads - the usual good things. One tradition we have for the adults is to
enjoy a Tom and Jerry before we eat. They are a good appetizer. When we are ready to sit down, we all hold hands and say grace. That’s a nice moment and can be quite a trick, as we usually have kids lined up all the way to the back bedrooms.
Any secrets or tips you’ve learned over the years that you’d care to pass along? Hmm, the kids always insist that I make the gravy, so I guess that’s one thing I do well, but it’s hard for me to tell people how I do it because there are no recipes or measurements. I’ve been doing it so long, I just kind of know to add a pinch of this and a bit of that to make things turn out right. One thing that helps with gravy though, is to add some of the water used to boil the potatoes. It’s starchy and really makes it easy to get a nice smooth consistency.
Writing that one down. With all the men in your family are you ever asked to schedule dinner around the football games?
Nooo. We don’t do that. Never had any requests like that and if there were, the answer would probably be ‘Sorry, that’s tough.’
So when all the cooking is done and your whole family is sitting there ready to eat together, it must be a special feeling. It is very nice to be together and it’s a relief to finally have dinner on the table! I find that I don’t end up eating all that much. My mother used to be the same way, and she would say, ‘I just don’t feel like it, I’ve been smelling it all day.’ What I enjoy the most is that the kids are so appreciative and seem to enjoy it so much. That means a lot to me.
It sounds like your family is pretty lucky and have a lot to be thankful for. You know, I’m getting hungry talking about this. What time should I be over for dinner on Thanksgiving? Come over anytime. We always need help with the dishes.

I
was speaking to a class of Pre Veterinary Medicine students last week at SDSU. One of the students asked, “What was one of your most challenging cases?” After a few moments, Mike the cat, came to mind. I was a new graduate, practicing in Boise Idaho, when I first met Mike. He was a middle-aged orange tabby that brought along his elderly human Irene. Mike was not feeling well, had lost his appetite and when I first examined him, his lymph nodes were enlarged over his entire body. Now this is not a challenging diagnosis as a Veterinarian, but he was a special cat. Mike was Irene’s companion and her connection to her deceased husband. Mike was also a bean retrieving cat. This cat could fetch and no one wanted to lose him. We did all of the blood tests, pathology and x-rays to confirm the diagnosis. We wanted to be absolutely certain. Mike had lymphoma. Mike would need chemotherapy to survive. He would become the first of many cancer patients that I have treated with chemotherapy. Irene allowed a young veterinarian the opportunity to save her best friend. Mike also had class and he became one of my favorite patients. Chemotherapy for Mike involved blood samples, IV catheters and of course the medicine that would make him better. He allowed, endured and seemed to know we were all trying to help him, even if he tired of being the target of a lot of needles. He also responded and went into remission. It was a success! Over the months of treatment, I also became friends with Mike’s human Irene. I soon started to learn that her husband

and son had recently passed away. Mike was her sanity during those days. Her life had never been easy, but that orange tabby cat was always there for her. I suspect she scrimped on her own care so Mike could get his treatments. She brought produce from her garden, baked treats for the staff and even taught my wife her secret cheesecake recipe. We became part of her family. Every pet is dear to their humans and has a special place in our hearts. Mike had found a place in my heart too. I understand the significance of our pets and what they can do to heal our hearts. Unconditional love is what they give, and they expect no more than a nice word, a soft pet and some kibble in their bowl. A year later, Mike’s lymphoma returned and we needed to make some tough decisions on what to do next. Our options were limited, we could try another round of chemotherapy or keep him comfortable for as long as possible. The decision was made to spoil for as long as we could. Mike had lived a great and loved life. Shortly after Mike passed away, I moved back to the Midwest. We kept in contact with Irene and one day we received a picture of a smiling Irene and an orange puff ball kitten named Tommy. Believe it or not, Tommy was a bean fetching pal that lived for 15 years. My family received a box, 2 years ago and in it was over 15 years of Christmas cards we had sent her with all the pictures of our kids and pets. She had passed away, but had kept all of the those memories. That is when the case is challenging.

ioneer archeologist Dr. W. H. Over recorded that the prehistoric builders of the nearby Sherman Park burial mounds lived in a ten acre village on a lower terrace south of this location. The village extended from 29th Street and Kiwanis Avenue to the Big Sioux River. These builders were of the Late Woodland culture (300 to 1000 A.D.), and the village was a permanent year-round settlement with a farming economy. People of this period were the first in the area to use the bow and arrow and to grow maize (corn). They continued ritualistic customs of earlier periods, including use of mounds for interment. Burial mounds represented an
elaborate form of ceremonial conduct. In 1922 Stringham Brothers contracted to grade the Minnehaha Country Club property at this site. Their plows turned up many old fireplaces and refuse heaps. Debris found included pottery fragments of the Woodland style, flint arrow points, knives, scrapers, stone implements of several types, and crushed buffalo bones. These ancients had secured food by primitive farming and hunting and by the gathering of edible plants, berries, acorns, and other nuts. After inspecting the site, Dr. Over observed “. . . It is evident that the village had been occupied for a long time.”
