hen you drive by Meredith & Bridget’s Flower Shop on Minnesota Avenue, the brightly-colored building just makes you want to go inside – even if you didn’t know what kind of business it was. Once inside, you feel like you have stepped into a friend’s sunroom all set for afternoon tea. With light streaming in through the large windows, a big floral sofa and an eclectic mix of tables and chairs set with dishes, glassware and floral arrangements, Meredith & Bridget’s just says, “Come in and stay a while!” That homey, friendly feel is exactly what the mother-daughter team of Meredith Peterson and Bridget Fitzgibbons-Peterson planned on when they decided to embark on this journey. The shop opened in April.

Minnesota Avenue | (605) 271-5500 | www.mbpflowers.com Find us on Facebook and Follow us on Twitter: @mbpflowers | Hours: Monday – Friday, 9am-5pm and Saturday 10am-4pm Bridget had done freelance work for weddings and events out of her garage for years. Daughter Meredith would help her on occasion. When their current location became available, they knew it was time to open a shop. “A long time ago, I had said this building would be a great place for a flower shop,” says Bridget. “It had been everything from a bar to a bike shop over the years.” The personality of this ownership pair came out as they transformed a building with dark, paneled walls to something bright and colorful. The “robin’s egg blue” furniture, like the dining table and hutch, are permanent display fixtures. Many of the other pieces, though, are up-cycled furniture items available for sale. Decorating all of the fixtures are fresh and silk flowers,

custom jewelry, and unique home decor. Their approach to flowers is as creative as their approach to other items in the store. “Each fresh flower arrangement we create is unique,” says Bridget. “No two are ever the same. We like to use a personal touch. Whether it is for a birthday, wedding or corporate event, we love to work with our customers to help them design that ‘just-what-I-wanted’ arrangement.” You can also BYOV – Bring Your Own Vase – and they will help you build the arrangement that you want in it. As a full-service flower shop, Meredith & Bridget’s will deliver in Sioux Falls and the surrounding area. Ordering deadlines and delivery fees vary, so be sure to check online or inquire when

The patient satisfaction surveys I read every day show that our patients are happy — and as a nurse, it doesn’t get more satisfying than that. I’m glad I chose Sioux Falls Specialty Hospital.

placing your order. For brides-to-be, they recommend starting at least 9 months out to book a florist. In addition to the traditional things you expect from a flower shop, Meredith & Bridget’s also offers weekly flower delivery in Sioux Falls to enhance a company’s lobby, offices or reception areas. “Fresh flowers brighten any interior,” says Meredith. “Whether a business has an environment that is professional, casual or elegant, we can work with them to make sure their weekly flower delivery perfectly fits their budget and style.” While the flowers in the shop are appealing both to the nose and to the eye, it is just as fun to browse all of their other unique offerings. You might come across a set of glassware just like the ones you fondly remember from grandma’s house. Perhaps you are a baker and would like a cake stand made from nostalgic or whimsical plates connected by candlesticks. You may not use a doily in your everyday decorating anymore, but the doily flowers at Meredith & Bridget’s would certainly make a fun conversation piece on an end table (as would the floral arrangement made from pages from a phone book!). Do you already have a little gift for someone special but need something to put it in? Check out the crafty gift boxes decorated with different papers, lettering, jewels and even old washers. You can also pick out a one-of-a-kind, handmade card from the wood-and-clothespin wall display. If you have a special event coming up, ask about renting their beautiful collection of milk glass pieces. Or, for a smaller group like a book club or birthday lunch, Bridget and Meredith will work with you to rent their charming space to add a little extra character to your gathering. Both mother and daughter love to play with the mix of old and new to create unique flowers and items for the home. And, what they have in the store is not all “girly,” either. They encourage men to stop in and check out their furniture pieces, coat racks made with old hardware or even a plate or picture display stand made from an old piece of curved industrial pipe. “And, of course, they could buy flowers for someone special while they are here,” Bridget says with a smile.

Tap into Good Food and Good Fun at

JL Beers

By Mary Michaels | Photos by Chang Photography “When I read about the evils of drinking beer…..I stopped reading.” That quote is attributed to “JL Beers” and is one of several witty quotes displayed (and for sale) on t-shirts at JL Beers and Great American Burgers, which opened in April on the 300 block of South Phillips Avenue. The North Dakota-based company got its start in Fargo back in 2009 and by October 2010, JL Beers was named “best burger joint in North Dakota” by USA Today. After expanding into West Fargo, Moorhead and Grand Forks, the ownership group looked south. “The ownership group knows the business climate and culture in Sioux Falls,” says general manager Brian Wilson. “They felt that opening in Sioux Falls – especially downtown – would be a

good fit for JL Beers.” The décor of the place certainly fits the unique and trendy feel of many downtown shops, bars and eateries. The painted brick wall just inside the door sports their motto, “Seating for 1000 – 47 at a time.” JL Beers encourages community seating to help customers to get to know one another as well as enhance the speed to getting one of the 47 chairs. Tall black tables and metallic silver chairs, ductwork overhead and “industrial art” on the wall are just a few of the unique features inside JL Beers. Be sure to check out the paper towel spools on each table that feature handles of different beer taps. You can also sit at the long bar counter to view the selection of bottled beers on the shelves or the 40 taps currently being

The InFOAMation board behind the bar posts the current beer features. Sitting a little farther down the bar you can watch the JL Beers cooks making those fresh burgers, fries and chips. Perhaps the most interesting view is the table next to the window looking into the cooler where you can watch the next keg being tapped. JL Beers has their own brand of brews, and there are always at least two of their own beers on tap. While some tap beers may be standard offerings, most are changed out as soon as the keg is gone. “We want to give our customers a unique experience and let them have the chance to try a wide variety of beers,” says Wilson. “So, we may change anywhere from one to seven taps each week.

Wilson says they produce a beer menu on a regular basis with the current lineup of tap beers, but that can easily be outdated by the time it’s printed. So, with beers changing almost daily, how can you keep track of what’s on tap? There’s an app for that! The JL Beers app for iPhone and Android will let you know the current offerings. You can search by JL Beers location, the beer’s origin or beer style – as well as rate the beers you try. For even faster updates, text JLBEERS323 to 46786. The text club has proven to be popular already in North Dakota, and he expects the Sioux Falls customers to appreciate it as well. “In some of our other locations, we’ve sent out a text about a new beer just being tapped and the keg was gone in a day.”

If you are enjoying the JL Beers experience, you can let your friends know by sending them Beer Mail. Write a message on a preprinted postcard inviting them to join you there the next time – and the staff will take care of the postage and drop it in the mail for you. The cold brews certainly get first mention in the establishment’s name, but the burgers deserve more than a passing mention. All of the burgers at JL Beers are made with fresh ground beef and served on a fresh baked bun. For basic burger lovers, you might prefer the Original Hamburger Stand Burger with pickles and special sauce or the Great American Burger with cheese, pickles and ketchup. JL Beers paid tribute to its new home city by adding a locally-named burger to its menu – the Phillips Ave. Burger with bacon, cheese, barbeque sauce and a hamburger patty with barbeque rub. Other more adventurous burgers are the BLT BLU®, Rajun Cajun and the Slaw Burger. And another favorite at JL Beers is their famous Humpty Dumpty Burger® with cheese and a fried egg. The fresh cut fries or chips are the perfect accompaniment for the burgers. You can get them with just classic sea salt or add a little zip with cajun, jalapeno cheddar or BBQ seasoning. For something extra, they offer a variety of dips like Cajun Lime, Ranch, BBQ Ranch, Chipotle and what they hail as the “Best Beer Cheese Dip Ever.” Another tasty option is to order the Buffalo BLU Fries or Chips topped with buffalo sauce and blue cheese. No meal is complete without dessert, and JL Beers has that covered as well with its 1919 Root Beer Float, featuring the famous 1919 Root Beer (caffeine and gluten free) paired with Schwan’s creamy vanilla ice cream. One important note: you must be 21 to enter JL Beers. But, you can always get orders to go! Great service is a priority for JL Beers, says Wilson. “During a customer’s time with us, they are likely to meet several members of our team. That is why we all wear a tag with our name as well as our personal favorite beer on it. We also provide guests with nametags so that we can get to know them and serve them better.” It’s a little reminiscent of “Cheers”. Now Sioux Falls has its own place where everybody knows your name.

eading east out of Sioux Falls on Madison Street, you quickly begin to see small, rolling hills, clusters of mature trees and beautiful South Dakota farmland. Just off to the north side of Madison, nestled into this rural scenery, is a little neighborhood. Down one of the winding, gravel roads is the home of Broc and Krista Halseth.

The Halseths had once talked about building a home but could never find that “just right spot to break ground. But, they found what they were looking for eight years ago with a 1.4 acre property that offers the best of both country living and a neighborhood for socializing and raising their two children. Over the years, the Halseths have taken their love of the

outdoors – and Broc’s love of hunting – and brought that indoors. One of their first remodeling projects was the kitchen. There had been a small sunroom off the kitchen, so they took out the wall to expand the kitchen, opening up the view to their back yard. The kitchen is a great mix of old and new, with modern-looking, Spark_EFHAd_June2012F.pdf

light maple cupboards and quartz countertops with a darker china hutch in the corner that looks like it came from a country farmhouse. But, the real star of the kitchen area is the custommade dining table with a pine table top sitting on a tree-trunk base. The table is a favorite piece of Krista’s because of the

memories literally etched into the table. “The pine wood of the table top is soft,” she explains, “so as my daughter has done her homework here over time, you can see her words in the wood.” While Krista says something like that might bother other people, she loves being able to look at the table which is

capturing moments of her daughter’s childhood. Krista calls the main level “just your normal family house,” with their bedroom, the kids’ bedrooms, and the open kitchendining-living area. It is in the lower level of the house where the Halseths’ love

of the outdoors is truly revealed. As you go down the steps, a sign hangs overhead that reads, “Do what you can where you are with what you have.” Krista explains the sign came from her mom, who said it was appropriate for the rustic, hunting lodge-like feel they created out of a “regular” basement. By the time you reach the bottom step, you are almost transported to another place, such as a cabin in the Black Hills. Suddenly, it seems very appropriate that this little neighborhood’s roads have names like Olde Wagon, Deer Hollow, Saddle Creek and Hidden Valley. The inspiration for the design – and the construction to bring it to life – came from the Halseth’s friend, Chris Hood, who owns a local landscaping business called Hoodscapes. Hood had used a similar design in his own home. Tall log “columns” provide a framework for the bar that draws your eye as soon as you come down the last step. These 1200 pound pieces that were found in Sioux Falls had to be brought in by a cherry picker. Another tall log was transformed with a copper sink and knobs covered with wood pieces for the sink behind the bar. The bar top was designed with broken pieces of slate tile (that match those on the bar floor) that were then covered by a clear epoxy to create a smooth surface. From behind the bar, you get the full view of this room that just beckons you to come and stay a while. To the left is a custom-made gun cabinet with glass doors surrounded

by more of the unique log trim. On the walls hang several of Broc’s “trophies” from his hunting excursions, including one that includes the arrow that he used during that hunt. “We like to decorate with things that have a story behind it,” Krista says. “Whether it’s the animals from Broc’s hunting trips or our family pictures; everything has a story or a memory associated with it.” The rich earthy walls, made to look weathered with special plaster and glaze techniques, are a perfect backdrop for all of the Halseths’ “stories” on display. The fireplace on an angled stone wall is another focal point of the room. The rock came from Wyoming, where Hood and his landscaping crew were able to trade a farmer some labor at his place for the rock that was on his property. A large sectional couch provides plenty of seating for the family or friends to sit by the fire and still see the outdoors through the patio doors. “We aren’t formal people,” says Krista. “We like to have a room be comfortable so we can just hang out.” Tucked behind that angled fireplace wall is a little nook with a lower door – designed to be a little getaway for the kids as a place to curl up in a chair to watch a movie. Outside, the Halseths added another section of deck towards the trees, which offers a nice outdoor dining space. The lower patio includes a hot tub, which is another favorite spot for the family and friends to gather. “We really love it here,” Krista says.” It is peaceful, and

we often have deer come through. The kids can go out exploring in the trees, which they call ‘the forest.’ It is nice to have neighbors so we can get together and kids can play together, but we all have our own space, too.” In this little neighborhood in the country, the Halseths love

the rustic and outdoorsy feel they have created inside their home, but there are some actual outdoor elements they have to deal with living where they do. “You definitely have to have 4-wheel drive in the winter,” Krista says with a smile.

Fun-to-Make Candy Coated Strawberries

Nick’s Favorite Strawberry Dessert

30 nice looking strawberries with the stems 10 oz vanilla or chocolate flavored candy coating any kind of chopped nuts or peanuts if desired

Crust: 1 1/2 cups flour 3/4 cup chopped pecans 1/2 cup cold butter, cubed

Rinse the strawberries and gently pat dry with a paper towel. Coarsely chop the candy coating and melt in a double-boiler. Dip the berries in the melted candy by holding the stem and dip halfway into the coating. Allow excess coating to drip off. Roll in the chopped nuts if desired. Place dipped berries on a baking sheet lined with waxed paper. Let stand for 1 hour at room temperature or until firm.

Filling: 1 cup butter, softened 8 oz package cream cheese, softened 2 cups powdered sugar 1 tsp vanilla 2 quarts fresh strawberries, halved Glaze: 1 cup sugar 3 Tbsp cornstarch 1 cup water 3 Tbsp strawberry gelatin 2 tsp lemon juice whipping cream Combine the nuts and flour in a small bowl. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Press into the bottom of a greased 9x13 inch pan. Bake at 300Ëš for 25-30 minutes or until set. Cool on a wire rack for an hour. To make the filling, cream the butter, cream cheese, powdered sugar and vanilla until light and fluffy. Spread this mixture over the crust and chill. 2-3 hours before serving, make the glaze by combining sugar and cornstarch in a small saucepan. Stir in the water until smooth and bring to a boil. Cook and stir for 1-2 minutes or until thickened and bubbly. Remove from heat and stir in the gelatin until dissolved. Stir in lemon juice and cool to lukewarm, stirring occasionally. While the glaze is cooling, arrange the strawberries over the filling. Spoon glaze over the berries and chill until ready to serve. Garnish with whipped cream. Serves 12-15.

n the twentieth of this fine month the sun will do its annual dance along the Tropic of Cancer marking the summer solstice. That’s the day when we here in the northern hemisphere are tilting as far toward the sun we as can. Along with the warm summer breezes, June brings with it the deep-seeded need to throw a backyard party. Nothing too crazy, just a couple dozen of your closest friends and a whole bunch of food and beverages. I can give you a little advice on the eats and drinks, but when it comes to finding friends, you’re on your own. Let’s get one thing straight, if the party is in the yard, you don’t want to spend your time in the kitchen. That means whenever possible, keep the cooking outdoors. Fire up the Weber, it’s grilling time! Most people think a backyard party means hot dogs and hamburgers, but think about your guests. They are going to have a drink in one hand and a plate full of food in the other hand, so unless you’re close to a family of octopuses, they won’t have a free hand to eat. That’s why I recommend the State Fair Plan – food on a stick! No, not corndogs and fried cheese, I’m talking kabobs, skewers and satays. Tasty small bites, each one with its own little handle, perfect for a full meal or light grazing. Here are a few simple crowd-pleasing ideas; start with a package of inexpensive chicken tenders and run each one length wise on a bamboo skewer. It’s a good idea to soak the skewers in water for a couple of hours first so they don’t burn. Then marinate the chicken in some bottled Italian salad dressing. They will cook through quickly on a medium hot grill and you can use just about anything from Heinz 57 to Thai style sweet

chili sauce to dip them. You can do the same thing with cubes of steak or pork chop for a little variety. Even the kids will like them! One of my favorites is to take a fully cooked spicy smoked sausage (like Andouille) and skewer slices of the sausage surrounded by a large peeled and deveined shrimp. Give them a quick marinade in olive oil, salt, pepper and crushed garlic before you throw them on the grill. Just cook until the shrimp are pink and opaque, then they are ready to eat. I like to make a remoulade sauce, but you can easily buy one at the store. We call these Cajun Toothpicks and while it’s a very simple recipe, I’ve won a couple of competitions with this one. But let’s not forget nature’s “food on a stick:” ribs. Face it; nothing says backyard barbeque like a rack of baby back ribs. Admittedly, ribs may not be as quick and easy to make as the others and they can get a little messy to eat. But trust me; they will leave an impression on your guests. There is one drawback… if you make really good ribs, you may have people dropping by on weekends just to see if you have any ribs on the smoker, and as soon as neighbors smell the faintest scent of pork in the air, they will stop in “just to say hi.” Anyone who reads this column regularly will know that I love lamb, so how could I finish this article without suggesting lamb chops? Look for racks of lamb, they can be a little on the pricey side, but you may be able to find local lamb at area meat lockers, or watch for New Zealand lamb. The racks from down under are smaller than South Dakota or Colorado lamb, but just about any lamb is good in my book. Cut the racks into double

Backyard Bartender Anyone can put out a cooler of beer or a pitcher of sangria, but if you want to set your party apart from the rest, try serving a signature cocktail. You can’t go wrong with a gin and tonic or whisky and ginger ale, but these are a couple of our old standbys.

Fuzzy Bunny This is a drink that my beloved and I created with a friend of ours. It’s a frequent cocktail hour visitor at our house. 1 1/2 ounces Captain Morgan Silver rum 6 ounces Fresca® Orange slice Stir rum and Fresca® in a tall glass with ice. Add orange slice as a garnish.

Fear and Loathing This drink is a product of my college days; I read a lot of Hunter Thompson back then, so that was the inspiration for the name. 2 ounces aged gold rum, preferably anejo 3 ounces fresh squeezed orange juice 3 ounces Mountain Dew®

chops (single chops tend to overcook very quickly.) Coat with olive oil, salt, pepper and some fresh chopped rosemary, then grill for a couple of minutes on each side. You’ll only want to cook them to about medium rare, so it won’t take long. That is my idea of the perfect finger food. I am a non-apologetic carnivore, but I understand some people might want to serve a few veggies. For you, I suggest vegetable kabobs and a few grilled veggies. While grilled veggies could be a whole article on its own, let me recommend asparagus. Soak in olive oil and balsamic vinegar with a little salt and pepper for a half hour, then grill for a few minutes. It may not qualify as food on a stick, but it’s a stick you can eat. So dust off those old lawn darts, polish up the bocce ball set and start sending out the invites, it’s time for a party on the patio. By the way, I’m free next Saturday and I’ll bring the guacamole. Do yourself a favor, eat something good today. Between his adventures in dining, Jim runs ADwërks, a small ad agency in uptown Sioux Falls.

I

don’t know much about the bond that exists between a father and a daughter since I only have boys, but I do know that my father-in-law was a man who treated his daughter like a princess. He shielded her when she needed protecting and let go when she needed her independence. It’s truly a remarkable bond. With my boys, they are always trying to emulate me. There’s nothing else like it in the world. Jaxon, my 8-year-old, keeps asking me when he gets to shave. Berent, my 9-year-old, thinks I am the best driver in the world! Dante, my 11-year-old, wants to learn all of my soccer “tricks.” The point is: the best Father’s Day present I receive every year is becoming my sons’ idol more and more as they grow. To be their role model, mentor, coach, friend, Dad… it is the greatest gift I could ever receive. Now it’s my turn to give a gift to you all the fathers out there. If you are a mom reading this, please pass this on to your significant other as he’s taking a drink of his ice cold beer this summer. Maybe a glass wine is just what the doctor ordered. Dutch researchers followed 1,373 men for more than four decades, noting their eating and drinking habits. Men who had about 20 grams of alcohol daily —equivalent to a half a glass

of wine — had 2 1/2 years added to their life expectancy at age 50, compared with men who didn’t drink at all, according to research published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health. Men who consumed only wine had twice as much added longevity. “In this study, 70 percent of all wine consumed was red wine,” the researchers, led by Marinette Streppel of the University of Wageningen in the Netherlands, said. “This suggests that the cardioprotective effect of wine could be due to a protective effect of polyphenol compounds in red wine, but other explanations cannot be ruled out.” Polyphenols are chemical substances found in plants such as tannins and flavonoids. Deep red wines like Cabernet and Zinfandel have a lot of tannins, which is a natural preservative found in the skins of red grapes. The research, dubbed the Zutphen Study after the Dutch town from which the participants were recruited, followed men born between 1900 and 1920 and examined them several times between 1960 and 2000. So what does all of this mean? Well, according to this study (and please keep in mind that I’m not a doctor or a researcher,

and this is just a study which only proves a theory based on a small select group of observed individuals) you might be able to add years to your longevity by drinking red wine! I like this study! Red wine is beneficial for you on lots of different levels: 1. Reduced risk of death from nearly all causes: According to studies from France, UK, Finland, and Denmark, moderate consumption of wine is more beneficial than that of beer or spirits. 2. Heart disease: One of the well-known and most studied benefits of red wine is its heart protective effect. Moderate consumption of red wine on a regular basis may be a preventative against coronary heart disease. Scientists believe the red wine reduces the risk of coronary heart disease by reducing production of low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and boosting high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. 3. Blood clots: Red wine produces anticlotting, or antithrombotic, action. Light to moderate consumers of wine have lower levels of protein fibrinogen which promotes blood clot formation. 4. Atherosclerosis: Red wine may prevent the initiation and progression of atherosclerosis (hardening or “furring” of the arteries). Atherosclerosis starts when blood vessels begin to lose their ability to relax. Both the alcohol and polyphenols in the red wine appear to favorably maintain healthy blood vessels by promoting the formation of nitric oxide (NO), the key chemical relaxing factor that plays an important role in the regulation of vascular tone. 5. Hypertension: Excessive alcohol consumption is generally considered a risk factor for hypertension. However, there is some evidence of favorable effects of red wine on blood pressure. Two glasses of red wine (250 ml), taken together with a meal, lower post-meal blood pressure in hypertensive persons. 6. Kidney stones: Red wine intake reduces the risk of kidney stone formation. 7. Alzheimer’s disease: Moderate wine drinking correlates with a lower risk for Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers found that resveratrol, a red wine polyphenol, produces neuroprotective effects. Happy Father’s Day to all of you wine drinkers out there. As my dad would always say, “Life is like a sled dog team: If you’re not the lead dog, the scenery never changes.” Carpe Vino! campfire is watched very closely. However, camping with your children can be a very enriching experience. Kids love to spend time outdoors. Camping is the perfect opportunity to spend some quality time as a family in a new environment filled with plenty of easy and fun activities to enjoy together. You can sit back, relax, and let your kids be as dirty and energetic as they want to be. From toddlers to teenagers, a camping trip is somewhat of a liberation for kids. They love being able to do everything outside, and having no indoor boundaries. Planned ahead of time, families can come up with some great activities to experience while camping. Here are some ideas to help kickstart your brainstorming session and inspire you to start digging out the sleeping bags and tents.

Nature Scavenger Hunt It only takes a quick look around the camping site to come up with ideas for things to find in a scavenger hunt. Specific types of flowers, trees, leaves, and animal tracks are all good things to add to the list. Activities can even be incorporated, such as catching a fish, skipping a rock, or hiking to the top of a hill. Get even more creative by creating a themed hunt, such as items beginning with each letter of the alphabet, using all of your senses, or a creature theme. Depending on the age of the kids involved, you can make it as easy or as difficult as you want to. Parents can even have their kids create a scavenger hunt for them to take part in.

geocaches, using a GPS unit. Before your camping trip, go to www.geocaching.com and enter the postal code of where you will be staying. Choose a geocache from the list and enter the coordinates of it into your GPS unit. There are several guidelines and tips on how to make your geocaching experience worthwhile, so be sure to check out all of the guidelines and instructions on the website.

Storytelling A classic camping activity, telling stories can be the perfect bonding experience for a family. Start a chain story, where one person begins by making up a plot and a few paragraphs, then passes it on to the next person. The story continues on until someone decides they are going to finish it. You may be surprised with what your family comes up with, and recording devices are highly encouraged, even if it is just with a notebook and pen!

Travel

Although camping is a time to be carefree and adventurous, you should always be aware of the hidden dangers such as poison ivy and oak, and dangerous animals and insects. Come prepared with sunscreen and safety gear, depending on what your activities will be. With caution and supervision, your camping trip will be one to look forward to each year, and your children will have many memories to hold on to and pass on to their own families in the future. This month, Father’s Day is there perfect time to spark these family traditions.

“...one in nine women will experience in their lifetime...” I

t’s a problem that many women live with every time they laugh, cough or sneeze – or put off going to the restroom too long. Leaking urine – or urinary incontinence – is a medical condition that one in nine women will experience in their lifetime, and the incidence increases with age. “Many women just put up with it out of embarrassment, or in thinking it’s just something that happens to women as they get older,” said Dr. Matthew Barker, fellowship trained urogynecologist with Avera Medical Group Urogynecology. What’s more, some surgical techniques used to treat this condition are in the news for causing harmful side effects,

making some women feel fearful or unsure if they want surgery. Dr. Barker says there are different surgical options, and the “first line” surgical treatment does not involve the use of synthetic transvaginal mesh material, which has been linked to serious complications. These surgical procedures treat what’s called pelvic organ prolapse, which is the medical term for when part of the bowel, bladder or uterus falls down into the vagina. “All these tissues sit on a bowl of muscles in the pelvis,” Dr. Barker said. “These are the muscles that contract when you sneeze, cough or laugh. They are also the muscles that get stretched during childbirth.” There’s also a network of

connective tissue in this region that provides support. It’s this stretching or damage to these muscles that can potentially lead to pelvic organ prolapse. Symptoms include urinary incontinence, overactive bladder, urgency and frequency, fecal incontinence, constipation, pelvic pain, pelvic pressure or painful intercourse. “All are interrelated, because they all involve the muscles, organs and structure of the female pelvis,” Dr. Barker said. One common surgical technique is to go in through the vagina, create an incision, and tie connective tissue together to create scar tissue and rebuild structure to hold pelvic organs in place. Use of synthetic mesh to rebuild this structure was introduced in the 1990s. However, reports of complications have caused the FDA to warn of possible side effects such as chronic pain and sexual dysfunction. Some women have also experienced infections and bleeding. “This mesh is a permanent material that is placed inside you that may cause complications affecting your quality of life,” Dr. Barker said. Placing the mesh through abdominal incisions is safer than transvaginally, he added. Dr. Barker says these warnings should not cause women excessive worry if they have already had a transvaginal mesh procedure – as long as they’re not having any pain or difficulty. It’s important to realize that there are different types of mesh used for different purposes that have different outcomes. For example, synthetic mesh in the form of midurethral slings is used to treat stress urinary incontinence, Dr. Barker said. This is the standard of care, and research shows that these slings are safe and effective for this use. Stress incontinence is caused by a poorly supported urethra. When the surrounding tissues can’t keep it closed, it leaks urine when the woman laughs, coughs or exercises. There are also non-surgical treatment options for these disorders, including medications, pelvic exercises, physical therapy and biofeedback. Treatment for urinary incontinence is a quality of life decision. “No one dies of this disorder – it’s all about helping women live to their full potential,” Dr. Barker said. Yet women should talk with their physician about all surgical options, and be assured that the procedure they plan to undergo is safe, without risk of harmful or even deadly side effects, he added. Crafty Snake

Coupon Bucket

What you need: Dad’s old tie or one from the thrift store, craft stuffing or plastic grocery bags, a long thin object, a hot glue gun or sewing machine, 2 googly eyes or white buttons, and some red felt.

What you need: Empty round container with a lid, tape, scissors, glue, pen, crayons, construction paper, your choice of decorations.

Directions: Open the wide end of the tie by carefully removing the stitches with some scissors. Use a long thin object such as a pencil or a metal clothes hanger to guide the stuffing into the tie as far as possible. Stuff from each end of the tie until the entire tie is filled with stuffing. Carefully use a hot glue gun or a sewing machine to secure each end closed. (Adult’s job!) Cut out a snake tongue from the red felt and glue or sew the bottom to the inside of the wide end of the tie, creating the snake’s mouth. Glue or sew your eyes to the top of the wide end of the tie, and you now have a crafty snake.

Directions: Cut out a strip of construction paper and tape or glue it around the container. This will be the base of the design. Cut out various shapes from different colors of more construction paper and glue to the base, creating a theme or a random pattern. You may also use crayons, markers, or stickers to decorate the container to your liking. Use a crayon or marker to write your Father’s Day message on the outside. Cut out shapes from constriction paper and write something special on each one. These will be the “coupons”. Ideas for your children to write are “Bring Dad a treat” or “Give Dad a hug”. Your child will have fun closing their eyes and choosing a coupon to use on Dad this Father’s Day!

What you need: Cellophane bags of various sizes, Dad’s favorite treats, a computer, adhesive label paper, and printer. Directions: Transfer Dad’s favorite treats, such as peanuts, chips, or candy, into baggies of various sizes. Using your computer software program of choice, type out superhero phrases and get creative with the names of each treat. Some ideas are “Hero Juice”, “X-Ray Vision Pellets”, and “Flying Chips”. Be sure to make the font small enough to fit on the package or baggie the treat is in. Print these out and cut the labels into the appropriate size and shape for each treat. Adhere the labels onto each treat’s baggie. If the treat is a drink or a bar of some sort, don’t hesitate to stick the superhero label right over the original label. Put all of the treats into a box or a gift bag, and address it to “Our Very Own Superhero” or something of that nature.

rom the hallway on the main level of Emily and Matt Erfman’s home, there is no indication that the nursery, belonging to 4 month-old son, Henry, is all that different from the adjacent rooms. But step inside, and perceptions quickly shift. The room is flooded with natural sunlight that illuminates the eccentric and offbeat details, and despite its quaint size and boxy shape, the room’s interior is bright, open, and lends plenty of storage space. To decide on the décor for the room, the couple looked to Emily’s mother, Ann Hanson, a designer at Twetten’s Interior Designs. They also opted to reuse multiple family heirlooms, many of which were used by Emily when she was a baby. There is evidence of the family’s sentimental nature everywhere. “The drapes in this room were mine when I was a little kid,” said Emily. “The crib was my dad’s and my sister, myself and my two Horner Ortho mag ad:Layout 1

brothers also slept in it, and now my two boys have slept in it.” The crib, just shy of 66 years old, sits obliquely in the middle of the room and makes for a main focal point of the nursery. The vibrant hand knit mobile suspended above the crib was purchased from blabla kids, and offers a sense of playfulness and whimsy. Emily serves as the marketing coordinator for Harold’s Photo Centers; therefore, pictures, not surprisingly, are a strong presence in the nursery, in addition to the rest of the home. The nursery houses many of the couple’s eclectic purchases, such as an oversized, iridescent elephant from One Kings Lane, and a small decorative lamb, which was purchased at an antique store in Kansas City and is nearly 100 years old.

Only a small number of the items in the room are truly brand new. Aside from the family heirlooms, much of the furniture and décor was purchased from antique stores or Twetten’s. “A lot of the furniture is older, kind of hand-me-down furniture, but it’s beautiful,” said Emily. The most stunning result of the collaborative work between Emily, Matt and Emily’s mother Ann is the equally unique and functional furnishings and fixtures on which they decided. The oversized, antique armoire that sits in the corner of the room as well as the large shelf positioned above the changing table both offer valuable storage space. “This shelf is wonderful, especially above the changing table,” said Emily. “Aside from

diapers and lotion, I’m also able to store toys, books, and decorative items on it. I love it. ” When it came time to select art for the room, the couple turned to Karen Kinder, a local South Dakota artist. “We went to Arts Night and we really liked her stuff,” said Emily. “Shortly after the event, we asked her to do a painting for the nursery.” Near the armoire, an oil painting of a sheep hangs on the wall. It features vibrant shades of blue and green, and provides a pleasant pop of color to the light beige wall it hangs upon. Henry’s room is tucked quietly away at the end of the house, but allows the natural sunlight to trickle in from windows and hallway. A New Approach for High Risk Pregnancies by Stacy Jones, Sanford Health

J

urena Hunter had no reason to expect that her third pregnancy would be any different from the birth of her first two children. When the 24-year-old Sioux Falls mom went into the clinic for an ultrasound to pinpoint her daughter’s due date, she looked forward to seeing those first grainy images of her growing child. But high volumes

PArenting & Pregnancy

“This was going to be a very different kind of pregnancy, right from the start...” of fluid around the baby’s neck raised an alarm. “They could tell right away that something was wrong,” Jurena said. “We’d had no problems in the past. That’s what made this so very difficult for me.”

A Different Experience Jurena would learn her daughter had gastroschisis, a rare congenital disorder where an infant’s intestines stick out of the body through a defect on one side of the umbilical cord. She would have to be closely monitored throughout her pregnancy and plan for surgery to repair her daughter’s abdomen almost immediately after birth. “This was going to be a very different kind of pregnancy, right from the start,” Jurena said. “We needed to be prepared for what was coming and watch everything very, very closely.” “Normal pregnancies can suddenly become high risk when

a health concern develops in a mother or baby,” says Jeffrey Boyle, MD, a Sanford Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist. About five to 10 percent of pregnant women will experience a high-risk pregnancy, which means that mother or baby has a higher-than-average risk of complications during pregnancy or birth. For those women, their care may involve extra screening tests and closer monitoring. Boyle says rather than a visit with an obstetrician once a month, they may need to consult multiple doctors to handle the specialized care they need. “These types of cases require a different kind of care for both the mother and the baby,” Boyle said.

takes an interdisciplinary approach to caring for women and babies during high risk pregnancies. Boyle said this unique concept allows for a collaborative partnership between maternal-fetal medicine specialists and more than 40 pediatric subspecialists at Sanford Children’s. Specialists meet regularly to consult on patient cases, giving them a chance to better diagnose high-risk conditions and to plan a coordinated course of treatment. “By working as a team, we can better plan for a patient’s care and also better communicate those plans to the patient,” says Boyle. “It’s a collaborative type of approach.” From Jurena’s first appointment, she was guided by a patient navigator who helped schedule her appointments and bring her to her doctor visits, getting answers for all her questions. Long before her due date, Jurena met with the specialists and surgeons who would take care of her daughter after her birth. She even toured the neonatal intensive care unit, so she would be ready for her daughter’s upcoming stay. “I felt like everybody I encountered truly cared about their patients,” Jurena said. “I was as comfortable about the situation as I could possibly be. We were ready.” Jurena and her daughter were carefully monitored throughout

the pregnancy. Plans were made to induce labor when her daughter reached about 35 weeks to prevent in utero problems that sometimes happen in the later weeks of gestation with babies with gastroschisis.

A Happy Ending When Jurena delivered Elise on August 17, she had a troublefree birth. Immediately after Elise was born, she had surgery to repair her condition, followed by several weeks of recovery and learning how to feed and grow. By the time Elise was 28 days old, she got to go home. “She was a rock star during the process,” Jurena says. “Everyone said it was remarkable how fast she came back.” Today, Elise shows few signs of her early problems. She eats and functions normally and even her surgical scars are almost impossible to see. Her family’s experience is an example of the kind of care Sanford Fetal Care Center tries to provide for high-risk pregnancies, said Boyle. “She’s just incredible,” Jurena said. “We don’t have the words to express how happy we are and how grateful we are for the way that everybody took care of her and us.”

These are just some of the wonderful books for children we have come across this month. We hope to share with you some you have not seen before and also introduce others being released in the near future. Enjoy.

Zachary’s Ball by Matt Tavares When Zachary’s father catches a foul ball at Fenway Park and gives it to him, something really amazing happens. Zachary finds himself on the pitcher’s mound, wearing a Red Sox uniform and playing against New York! As long as Zachary has the ball, all his baseball fantasies seem to come true. But can he hold on to its magic? Lori Kiesow– Preserving the Past, Planting for the Future By Adrienne McKeown

W

hile the rings of a tree can provide glimpses into the past, the catchy conservation tune sung by John Denver urges us to plant a tree for our tomorrows. It is the future—not the past—that has people the world over hugging (and planting) trees. After all, the air-cleaning, soil-sustaining power of the mighty forests is what provides a natural frontline in reducing the effects of global warming. So if the role of planting forests is to protect our future, what does one of the biggest bur oak trees in South Dakota have to do with preserving the past? At the Mary Jo Wegner Arboretum and East Sioux Falls Historic Site, trees and history go hand-in-

How did you get involved with the arboretum project?

hand. We sat down with Executive Director Lori Kiesow to learn more about how preserving the past and planting for the future combine to provide an educational new experience in the area.

So what exactly is an arboretum?

I came on board to help raise money during the Chamber of Commerce-approved capital campaign in May of 2008. I was trying to get back into this type of field—working with trees and plants— because I had worked for a nursery for 12 years before that.

An arboretum is basically an educational tree garden. In arboretums, you label the trees you plant so when somebody comes in who doesn’t know anything about trees, they can learn about them. The plants are labeled, the trees are labeled, and the bushes are labeled. We’ve labeled the ones we’ve planted, but we haven’t gotten all of the existing ones done yet.

My thumb isn’t very green, so I’m not very well versed in all of the different species of plants and such. Aside from the work you’re doing to label the trees, how do you know how many different types of living things actually exist here at the arboretum? Have you ever heard of a Bio Blitz? You take a specific amount of time (we chose four hours), and you invite scientists in to see how many species—plants, animals, trees, insects, everything— that they can find in the given period of time. We had about 13 or 14 scientists at our blitz, and we came up with 484 species that they found. It was awesome. It was so much fun!

Are arboretums common across the country? There aren’t that many around here. There is a self-guided one down near Freeman, and, actually, McCrory Gardens just recently added “arboretum” to their name when they built their new facility in Brookings. The closest one that is fully staffed is in Chanhassen, MN, and it’s part of the University of Minnesota. Many arboretums are part of a university, and they are typically teaching facilities. Hopefully someday we will be connected with one of the local educational facilities.

Speaking of fun, I see a Children’s Garden shown on the plans for the site. What will that entail? Yes, it’s in the plans for 2014. Some of it will be sensory—

smell and touch, bright colorful things, fragrant things—so that you can teach children about fuzzy leaves, smooth shiny leaves, and all those kind of things.

So it will be interactive? It’s not a “don’t touch” kind of thing? No, that’s the thing about arboretums. They typically aren’t a “don’t touch” kind of place. They are a place that we encourage you to touch things and feel things and smell things. It’s very visual. We had an Arbor Day celebration here recently and had three classes of 2nd graders visit. We planted a tree, took a hike, looked over the bridge, and then we came down to the field and said, “Now you get to run and play!” And they looked at their teachers like, “We don’t ever get to do this!” They ran, they played, they rolled in the grass.

The name of the organization also includes “East Sioux Falls Historic Site.” Tell us more about that. Where we are located used to be a town called East Sioux Falls, and it was a quarry town. This is where they quarried all the pink quartzite used to build the Old Courthouse Museum and the Federal Courthouse downtown. They also made cobblestones that were sent as far as Chicago to build streets. They even sent pink quartzite all the way to New York City where there is still a cathedral—St. John’s Cathedral—built out of the pink quartzite from East Sioux Falls. It used to be a town of about 800 people, but when the quarry went out of business, the town pretty much dried up. If you go down into the trees, you’ll see the remains of some of the dwellings. We actually had Dr. Adrien Hannus [Professor of Anthropology and Director of the Archeology Laboratory at Augustana College] come out here and locate all of the artifacts before we started digging. He located each home site and has them all mapped out so we don’t disturb anything. There is also an old railroad bed that we will turn into a walking trail.

I see there are currently signs near the entrance that provide a brief history of the site. Will there be more to explore in the Educational Center? The [Educational Center] building will go up this summer and will be completed right before Christmas. We will have computers and microscopes—things that teachers would want to use to explore the nature side—but the Educational Center will also show what was grown back in those days. The schoolhouse we’re building is a replica of the schoolhouse that was out here at that time. We’ve collected old desks, chalkboards, and other furnishings for this museum-type room so people can see what a classroom looked like back then.

It sounds like—in addition to being a nature lover—you’re also a museum curator of sorts. (Laughs) Well kind of, yeah. I didn’t know this stuff before I came onboard this project, but the history is pretty amazing. We have an education and a historical committee; I’m very fortunate to have both. Our education committee has been working on this project for several years now.

Part of your vision for this venture is “to nurture connections between plants and people, past and present.” How do plants help bring history to life? Looking at the history helps us answer questions like what types of plants did people grow back in the 1800s? And how did they change? And why did they grow them? For the most part, back in those days, things were planted for a purpose. They planted trees to be a shelter belt or they planted shrubs to be the underlying of that shelter belt. They planted crops to feed themselves. Things were not like today where we can have a whole yard full of flowers and it’s for nothing other than enjoyment. For the most part, if they planted things, it was for a purpose. Looking back at the past in this way helps us to understand that we live in a pretty privileged world.

The Love of Snoopy by Dick Rogen, DVM Horizon Pet Care, 1100 E. Holly Blvd., Brandon, SD (605) 582-8445

M

y first dog was a small brown and white terrier mix called Snoopy. She was smart, active and tried to be as cool as her namesake. She came to our house when I was nine years old. She was so tiny, that she fit into a baseball hat for naps. My dad found her at the Humane Society in Sioux Falls. She was very young and fragile, but she soon grew into beautiful, rabbit chasing machine. She was the first house dog in our family. It certainly raised a stir with grandma and some neighbors. Oh how the world has changed. My grandmother was sure I was going to catch some serious germs and the neighbors saw it as pure foolishness. They were not afraid to tell us either. In 1969, many thought dogs were dirty creatures that needed to stay outside. We certainly should not allow them into the house, let alone sleep in the bed. OOF DA! Society has changed a lot since Snoopy came to our house. Even some of the neighbors broke down and got house pets. Our world is noisy, fast and sometimes not easy to live in. The constant of a pet’s companionship helps give us balance. Maybe that’s why pets have becomes so important.

PETS

Now, Snoopy had a tough job. She had to help do chores, fetch balls and take naps with me even if she wasn’t tired. She even had to come along for car rides! More importantly, she was my confidant to life’s problems and secrets. Dogs are usually good at keeping secrets, unless it involves food. Pets are great for kids, as long as the pet “fits” the family. Some are even so good at being our best friend that the house rotates around them. They provide us with companionship, happiness and affection without a price. I know pets that have trust funds, guardianships and their own cars. Now I hope that they are just riding and not driving those cars, but it shows how valued these relationships are. Snoopy and the dogs that followed her in our family were important in my decision to become a Veterinarian. It makes it easy for me to understand their place in our hearts. Snoopy has long passed away, but her memories are as fresh as yesterday. She was a great experience and an important part of my life. I hope all of you have the same great memories of your first pet. And by the way, Thanks Dad for the puppy!

Festival of Progress by Tom Godbey and Bruce Blake

T

Festival of Progress Split Rock Park, Garretson

he Reconstruction Finance Corporation (RFC) granted a $440,000 relief loan to South Dakota in 1932, the third year of the Great Depression. Garretson became one of five towns in the county allotted funds. Its City Council then proposed to give work to 47 unemployed men by building a dam “across Split Rock River.” RFC funds were to be used for wages with the SD Fish & Game to provide materials. Men were not paid in cash, only in orders for food and clothing from local merchants. In 1935 Works Progress Administration (WPA) replaced the RFC. It approved the City Council’s plans to build a stone bath house, add four feet in height to the dam, prepare a beach, and build a “bridge across Gulch stream.” Garretson celebrated the completion of its new civic projects during a three day “Festival of Progress” that began July 16, 1936. On opening day almost 7000 persons attended while five high school bands gave concerts. New improvements formally dedicated were Split Rock Park, including the dam and bath house, the stone fishing bridge, and a municipal airport. The woman who submitted the name chosen for the new park was awarded $5. DEDICATED IN 2011 BY CITY OF GARRETSON & GARRETSON & MINNEHAHA COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETIES.

Precarious Diving Board is OK Note the unusual diving board contraption on top of the dam! Also the single wire fence that offered limited protection to divers walking across the dam to the stepladder. Divers then climbed these steps up to the diving board and dived off into deep water on the upstream side of the dam. Also note the drive pipe which begins on the upstream side, passes through the dam, and continues on the downstream side. It then bends sharply down below the surface of the water to the hydraulic ram pump. Image owner: City of Garretson.

A Hydraulic Ram Pump Makes Water Run Uphill! For many summers a hydraulic ram pump supplied a small, steady stream of water uphill day and night to a storage tank, thereby making fresh water available in the bath house for showers and toilets. The source of the water was Split Rock River (1). Water from the upstream side of the dam flowed through a pipe built through the dam to the downstream side of the dam where it rushed down through a drive pipe (2) to the hydraulic ram pump (3). Water then escaped out of the hydraulic ram pump’s waste valve (4) until enough pressure was built up inside the pump to close the outlet. This forced the water through a check valve (5) into the bath house storage tank (8). When the check valve closed, the water in the drive pipe (2) (just as the air did in the compartment) rebounded for a moment. This action created a partial vacuum which allowed the waste valve (4) to drop open again, and the entire cycle then repeated. Image owner: City of Garretson.
