Things have really evolved since La-Z-Boy first introduced the recliner in 1928. Since then, their product line has grown and their brand name has become recognized across the country and around the globe. But one fact has remained constant: La-Z-Boy is always synonymous with comfort and quality. (Not to mention proud to be American-made and “Santa Approved!”)

Old Favorite, New Location The Cookie Jar Moves to Shriver Square by MAry Michaels | Photos by Chang Photography
F
ans of the Cookie Jar will be enjoying all of their favorite soups, sandwiches and sweet treats in a new location, thanks to a recent business move to Shriver Square on the corner of 11th & Phillips. After more than a decade in a different downtown location – nestled in the middle of the block on 10th Street – the Cookie Jar had outgrown its space. “We just needed more room,” says Greg Koch. “When you see all your tables full and a line out the door, that’s a pretty good sign that your business is ready to expand.” The Cookie Jar is a family affair, with Koch, his sisters Becky (Smith) and Christine (Verba), and their parents Elaine and Glen, all part of the business. According to Greg and Becky, each of them has their own special niche in the business. “Greg’s the front end manager – the business and marketing guy,” says Becky. “I do most of the decorating for custom cakes and cookies. Christine comes in part-time to help with mixing and baking. Dad takes care of the delicious soups, sandwiches and catering, and Mom is the chief mixer and baker and has all

the new recipes.” “Mom’s the glue,” Greg adds. With the front corner spot at Shriver Square, the Cookie Jar has more than doubled its seating capacity, and they hope to be able to offer outdoor seating next summer. Big windows not only showcase the dining spot to passing shoppers, visitors and downtown employees, but they also add an abundance of natural light, which has proven to be an added bonus for the bakers. “Our former location was small with lighting that sometimes made it difficult to gauge frosting colors,” says Greg. “We might be trying to make red but had to look closely to ensure it was red and not burgundy. Now, this added natural light really helps us out at the mixing station.” Another exciting addition to the new location is expanded hours to include breakfast every day. They will have rolls, breakfast sandwiches and flavored coffees each day, as well as some plated specials like egg casserole on Sundays. The Cookie Jar is well known for its homemade bread, which Becky and Greg say is their grandma’s recipe, and now it’s not just for lunch anymore.

“We’ll be offering our special ‘Midwest Toast’ for breakfast,” says Greg. “Customers will be able to enjoy this delicious bread toasted with their favorite toppings like cream cheese or jelly.” Need a spot for a business meeting or birthday party? Greg says the Cookie Jar is ready to host you. “It’s exciting that we can host a special event or meeting in one room and still run our regular lunch in the dining area. There is great potential for us here at this location.” On First Fridays, they offer a family decorating night, where families can come in to decorate cookies together. With a set number of spaces available, families are encouraged to sign up in advance. And, plan on also providing some advance notice if you would like to have the Cookie Jar’s bread, rolls or special holiday treats for your office or family get-together. Christmas time at the Cookie Jar is like being at grandma’s house, according to Becky and Greg. They will make countless Russian tea cakes, ginger snaps, butter spritz cookies, and cutout cookies this holiday season. Customers can choose from three different sizes of assorted cookie trays or they can work

with the Cookie Jar family to customize their cookie orders. The Cookie Jar’s order form is on their website, along with all the information you need to know about their daily soup and sandwich features. If you can’t make it down to Shriver Square for lunch, don’t worry – they’ll deliver! Greg says individuals or groups can email, fax or call in lunch orders for delivery – preferably well in advance of the lunch hour to ensure they see all of the orders before the lunch crowd comes in. This is a popular service, says Greg. “There are days I can tour the entire city with deliveries.” Although it was a little harried as they remodeled the new space and prepared for the move – even having deliveries impacted by Hurricane Sandy – the Cookie Jar family is happy to be in their new home. “It is so easy to find us now,” says Becky. “We are looking forward to seeing all the people walking by and inviting them in. And, with the parking ramp connected to Shriver Square by skywalk, you can park your car and come to the Cookie Jar without having to go outside.” The siblings agree there have been times that being all together in a family business could provide the makings for a reality show. Working in the smaller location, they were often right on top of each other, which could be challenging. But now, there’s much more elbow room for everyone. Greg sums it up well. “Now our mom and dad can say ‘go to your room’ – and we can!”

A Touch of Nostalgia at Fibber McGee’s By Mary Michaels | Photos by Chang Photography
“O
h, heavenly days!” If you ever heard that expression growing up, it means someone in your house is familiar with the old radio comedy show Fibber McGee and Molly. This beloved show was on the air for more than 20 years, telling the stories of foible-prone Fibber and his patient, common-sense wife Molly. Its run covered two decades marked by depression and war in our country, and it offered Americans the opportunity to get away to a place where they could find a
little cheer. That’s why Deb Teunissen and Cyndee Wagner chose Fibber McGee’s as the name for their new home décor store in Harrisburg — that also includes a coffee and smoothie bar. “We hope that everyone will feel that same sense of warmth, nostalgia and cheer when they visit us here,” says Wagner. Besides a few expressions like “heavenly days!” that worked their way into the American vernacular, the show is probably best known for Fibber McGee’s closet. The hall closet was

almost always stuffed to overflowing and, despite Molly’s warning not to open it, Fibber usually did – winding up buried in an avalanche of the closet’s contents. “Fibber McGee was known for his closet stuffed with a little bit of everything, so we borrowed that idea,” explains Teunissen. “We have filled the store will all sorts of unique items and goodies.” There is actually a little display room in the store labeled “Fibber McGee’s closet,” and several black and white photos from the show hang on the wall. They have a long list of real fruit smoothies that are all named from the show’s characters. Both women had previously been in business separately. Wagner and her mother had a small store in Harrisburg, and Teunissen had a seasonal store in Sioux Falls. Teunissen frequented Wagner’s shop looking for items as she worked with interior design clients, and the two became friends. After Wagner’s mother passed away a year ago, they started talking about going into business together. If you were asked to illustrate the concept of “mixing business with pleasure,” you could just show a picture of Fibber McGee’s. Even as they painted every wall, finished the floor and unpacked every box, Teunissen says, they were laughing and having a great time. Wagner says she is more about architectural design and details and calls Teunissen the one who knows “paint colors and fabric swatches.”
Fibber McGee’s 518 Cliff Avenue, Harrisburg Hours: M-F, 6:30am-6pm; Sat. 7am-4pm Find us on Facebook! “We’re the perfect combination,” she says. The store opened in early November, just in time for holiday shopping. The two certainly have filled the store with lots of unique things, many of which come from local artists. Two beautifully crafted Santas greet customers at the front of the store. They come from “Joyful Friends” by Marge Blaue of Sioux Falls. One set of shelves is filled with candles from Hometown Delights in Corsica, with scents like Apple & Maple Bourbon, Hansel & Gretel’s House, Winter Wonderland and Crème Brulee.
etc. for her | December 2012 13
Near the counter is a rack of original photo cards “by Bernice,” another local who captures beautiful images of flowers and whimsical shots like a napping cat or kissing squirrels. Whatever halls you need to deck this holiday season, you’re likely to find something (or more than one thing!) at Fibber McGee’s… holly berry and greenery “picks” for your table arrangements, plates to show off your holiday baking, wreaths for your door or walls, and of course, decorations for your tree. One tree in the store features beautiful glass ornaments in golds and coppers. Another is adorned with a rustic-looking owl and holly tree ornaments, as well as silver tin and “rusty” tin jingle bells. On those chilly winter days, light one of the birch tree candles, sip some cocoa in a cartwheeling snowman mug, and grab a treat from the roly-poly snowman cookie jar. Need a hostess gift? Pick up a pack of cute holiday recipe cards with a cookie cutter attached. The store also features furniture, artwork, candlesticks, table runners, decorative pillows, handmade jewelry and handmade hats, sweaters and blankets for little ones.

You could say that Fibber McGee’s has everything but the kitchen sink….but they have that too! Wagner has traveled to Europe and Asia, finding unique pieces like a 14-gallon copper farm sink. Other finds from her travels include copper range hoods and European vanities with marble tops and porcelain or copper sinks. If you need to take a break while browsing, pull up a chair at one of the tables near the big fireplace (which Wagner built) and enjoy a coffee, latte, hot chocolate, chai tea or one of the delicious fruit smoothies. There are always delicious baked treats to go with your favorite beverage, from muffins and cookies to ample-sized cinnamon rolls. “It’s nice because we even have high school students come in after school for a smoothie,” Wagner says. “We have a very family-friendly place for shopping and socializing.” Customers will have even more opportunities to come together, as Fibber McGee’s plans to begin offering various classes after the first of the year and will also have a space for small gatherings like birthday parties. Fibber McGee’s is hosting a Christmas open house on December 8, featuring South Dakota Survivor star Holly Hoffman at the store from 11am-1pm for a book signing. “Fibber McGee and Molly brought people together around the radio and made them smile,” says Teunissen, “and we are so excited to have the chance to be here in Harrisburg and do the same thing.”

A
t the Pete and Robin Stencil home this season, it is all about decking the halls….and the walls…and the tables…and the chairs… “I love Christmas,” says Robin Stencil, who spreads the holiday joy throughout her home and at her Harrisburg business, The Robin’s Nest. “I like to take the home décor I already have and mix it with a variety of things for the holiday season.” That could be anything from a clear glass vase filled with garland beads or big red jingle bells sitting atop a pair of candlesticks. “Candle holders aren’t just for candles, you know,” she says smiling. The Stencils have plenty of great spaces for decorating in the two-story house they built eight years ago. The project was a perfect combination, with Pete in the home building industry and Robin with her innate sense of design and decorating. “I would describe the style as ‘Old World’ or ‘Tuscan,’” Robin explains. “But there is also a little contemporary mixed in here and there. That’s the great thing about decorating – anything goes.” Robin has a passion for helping other people decorate their homes, and she says it’s important to just look for those things that really speak to you or to incorporate pieces that have

special meaning. For her, that means leopard. “I have a little bit of leopard in every room. It used to be that you were supposed to have a little black in every room, and now it’s animal print. Leopard is the ‘new neutral.’” In the kitchen, it’s the spotted leopard upholstery on the chairs around the kitchen table and on the high stools lining one side of the large center island. The living room really has the “old world” feel with overstuffed furniture, beautiful wood, and one accent wall painted a rich burgundy. The room has a warm and cozy feel, perfect at any time of the year, but even more so when you add in a beautifully decorated tree, candles and stockings hung from the mantel above the fireplace. And, don’t forget the leopard, which is carried into the room with accent pillows on the couch and

patterned picture frames. Here, Stencil combines leopard and candy cane décor. Three stockings now hang where there used to be four…one for Pete, one for Robin and one for their husky, Meeka. Last year was their first Christmas without their other beloved dog, Ebony. Robin loves filling tables and shelves with photographs of family and the dogs, and one of the most special pictures shows Ebony and Meeka standing next to the Christmas tree, peering out the window as if they were waiting for Santa. Nearly every room has its own tree, some of which stay up year round to accommodate other holidays. The “kitchen tree,” for example, transitioned into Christmas from Halloween, when it sported a glammed-up witch hat and tall black and silver-

glitter striped witch shoes (“Every tree needs a good pair of shoes,” says Robin). There are comfortable stops throughout the house, such as the side chairs in the kitchen and dining room and the chaise lounge near the window in the master bedroom. However, Robin says, “Furniture isn’t for sitting – it’s for pillows and throws!” Every couch, chair and bed is plentifully piled with pillows of all shapes, sizes and patterns…inviting you to just snuggle right into them with a cup of holiday tea. The one exception might be the chaise in the master bedroom,

a piece that Robin always wanted to have in her bedroom but now doesn’t get to enjoy. “That is Meeka’s spot,” she explains. Two other unique bedrooms round out the upstairs. One is called “the bear room,” which is centered around a large framed print of “The Dancing Bears” that hangs on the wall. Robin is a big fan of teddy bears, and they fill the bed, a shelf over the closet, on the dresser and a cute little fellow sits atop an old trunk that has been in Robin’s family for years. The other room provides a special place for Robin’s niece, Blair, to visit when she comes over. A large sleigh bed style daybed covers most of one wall and, true to Robin’s decorating
style, it is filled with comfy pillows. In this room, she added a “Little Princess” tree for some holiday charm. Having a home décor business certainly helps Robin generate new ideas for her own house as the seasons change. “It’s not unusual to get tired of a room after a while,” Robin says, “but sometimes you might be limited in being able to physically rearrange a room. But the great thing about your home is that it’s the one place where you can truly be yourself. So, adding in a few seasonal touches, creating different arrangements on shelves or tables, and just mixing it up a bit with accessories that represent you can create a whole new look.” As the calendar turned to December at this charming 2-story house, it is most definitely beginning to look a lot like Christmas.
Go ahead, express yourself. Make your new kitchen a reflection of your style, your free spirit. Take a confident step outside the box. After all, there’s no one quite like you. So why should your kitchen be just like everyone else’s?

A Hug in a Mug
By Jim Mathis
I
t started on Sunday morning with a little tickle in my throat. On Monday afternoon, the sniffles started up. By Tuesday morning, I was in the grips of a full-blown cold. Sneezy, Coughy, Achy, Sleepy, Grumpy, and the rest of the seven dwarves of the common cold had taken up residence in my head and chest. If ever there was a time for a steaming bowl of comfort food, this was it. When I’m feeling under the weather, soup tops my list. The combination of a piping hot bowl of chicken noodle and a grilled cheese sandwich has the power to take me back to an elementary school sick day. Come to think of it, that was usually the menu on snow days too. It’s a meal that warms you up and makes you feel better, whether you’re cold and wet or fighting a cold. I am not the first to ask “if we can put a man on the moon,

why can’t we cure the common cold?” But until we have a cure, we have chicken soup. And while mom and grandma may have claimed chicken soup was a bowl full of medicine, now science has backed them up. Doctors have found that the ingredients in chicken soup actually have anti-inflammatory properties that really do make you feel better. They also found that the ingredients in chicken soup helped to stop the movement of something called neutrophils… that’s the stuff that causes the release of mucous. What does that mean to you and me? Scientists have actually proven that chicken soup helps fight the coughs and stuffy nose caused by viral infections like the common cold. So while grandma didn’t know the science behind the miracle of chicken soup, she
Because every
certainly knew that it worked. Several years ago, I was travelling on business and fighting a cold. When I checked into the hotel, I was ready for a quick meal and a good night’s sleep. I was relieved to find matzo ball soup on the menu. I’d never had matzo balls, but I knew the soup part was a hearty chicken broth so I figured I couldn’t go wrong. What I discovered was rich chicken stock with a tennis ball-sized matzo ball. It was lighter than I expected, and rich like a good dumpling. And the soup worked; I woke up the next day feeling like a million bucks. If I could only find a Jewish grandmother to make me a batch whenever I’m feeling under the weather, I’d be in good shape. If anyone has a “Bubbe” they’d be willing to loan me, I would be forever in your debt.

While chicken soup may be a miracle drug in a bowl, it is not alone in the soup family, and just about any soup can be like a big warm hug in a mug. One of my favorites is a beef with barley; a big hearty soup that fills you up and makes you feel like you can conquer the world. Or a bowl of clam chowder with big chunks of briny clam that makes even a landlocked boy feel a like a salty old sea captain. What about tomato soup, you ask? The humble can of Campbell’s Tomato inspired Andy Warhol to reinvent the world of modern art. You can’t tell me he didn’t empty a few of those cans on cold New York evenings before inspiration struck. Speaking of inspiration, my beloved and I were at a cocktail party a while back where one of the appetizers was a small teacup of tomato soup served with finger-sized grilled cheese sandwiches. A simple and tasty treat that made a bunch of stuffy adults feel like kids. You simply couldn’t eat them without smiling. Brilliant. Many years ago a friend gave me a soup mug, like an overgrown coffee cup, this one was a promotional item sent to TV stations when Seinfeld was going into syndication. On one side is the Seinfeld logo, the other says “No soup for you!” Anyone who has seen that classic sitcom episode knows that line, denying you the Soup Nazi’s precious broth was the worst punishment imaginable. I’m sure I got that mug more than 15 years ago, and today it’s still one of the most used dishes in our cupboard. That episode has become a cultural touchstone for a generation, and while the humor still makes me chuckle, the premise – a restaurant that sells the perfect soup makes it worth putting up with an abusive purveyor – still rings true. Speaking of Seinfeld, if you ever doubted the power of soup, just remember the story Elaine told about a date where she had the lobster bisque “and yadda, yadda, yadda, he never called me again.” George accuses her of using the “yadda, yadda” to skip the best part of the story. Her reply was simply “I mentioned the bisque.” And with that phrase she announced to the world that a bowl of really good soup was better than the sex she’d dismissed with a yadda. I’m not sure I’d go that far, but I do enjoy a lobster bisque! Whether you’re looking for relief from the sniffles or a supplement for your love life, it seems it can be found in a steaming bowl of soup. Do yourself a favor, eat something good today. When Jim’s not seeking out the perfect bowl of soup, he runs ADwërks, ad agency in uptown Sioux Falls.

An I talian Christmas:
La Befana and Panettone by Riccardo Tarabelsi
I
remember waking up on January 6 in 1978, running to the living room chimney to find my stocking full of candy and little toys. I remember not believing my eyes. I remember exclaiming to my parents, “La Befana found me in America too!” I was six-years-old, and it was my first Christmas in the United States. My parents did everything they could to make it feel like home; more like Italy: we had Panettone cake; we had Advent calendars; we had Parmigiano Reggiano; we had tortellini with freshly made bolognese; we had the smells and the tastes and the decorations, but I was still worried about one thing…would La Befana find me? La Befana is one of Italy’s oldest and most celebrated legends. Each year on January 6, the children of Italy awaken in hopes that La Befana has made a visit to their house. This is a significant day to Italians because it marks the end of the Christmas season and the day that the three Wise Men arrived

Riccardo Recommends There is not a wine more befitting for the holidays than Banfi Rosa Regale made from the Brachetto grape. I love absolutely everything about this wine: the bottle it’s presented in, the balance of the sugars, and the unique presence of bubbles in a red wine. The delicate bouquet of rose petals and the flavors of fresh raspberries and strawberries make this a wine I recommend. And, by the way, no wine pairs better with chocolate than Rosa Regale. Carpe Vino! at the manger of the Christ child. Over the years, the Epiphany has been a more celebrated holiday for the children of Italy than even Christmas. As legend has it, the three Wise Men were in search of the Christ child when they decided to stop at a small house to ask for directions. Upon knocking, an old woman holding a broom opened the door slightly to see who was there. Standing at her doorstep, were three colorfully dressed men who were in need of directions to find the Christ child. The old woman was unaware of who these three men were looking for and could not point them in the right direction. Prior to the three men leaving, they kindly asked the old woman to join them on their journey. She declined because she had much housework to do. After they left, she felt as though she had made a mistake and decided to go and catch up with the kind men. After many hours of searching, she could not find them. Thinking of the
opportunity she had missed, the old woman stopped every child to give him or her a small treat in hopes that one was the Christ child. Each year on the eve of the Epiphany, she sets out looking for the baby Jesus. She stops at each child’s house to leave treats in their stockings for those who were good, and a lump of coal for those who were bad. To this day, I still hang my stocking on the night of January 5 in hopes that La Befana will remember me as that little boy who wished to be found on the other side of the globe. Now that I have children of my own, I have passed on this custom to them, telling the enchanting story of that kind old lady who will fill their stockings a week-and-a-half after Santa Claus does. Another Italian holiday tradition is a special cake called Panettone (pronounced PAH-NEH-TOE-NEH.) Northern Italy’s traditional Christmas cakes, known as Panettone, are golden-brown and shaped like giant mushrooms.

There are lots of theories about the famous Panettone, but the most romantic of all the tales is that of a Milanese baker named Toni di Borgo alle Grazie. Toni ran his shop with a stern hand, as he did the life of his young and beautiful daughter, Adalgisa. Because of this, his faithful employee, Ughetto della Tela, knew that he would never receive Toni’s consent to marry Adalgisa, despite the love between the two, unless he could somehow raise his status from that of a “low-life” kitchen hand. Thus, to win Adalgisa’s hand, Ughetto worked feverishly afterhours creating a bread that would be sweeter and richer than anything the city had ever had in the past. Through word-ofmouth, friends of Ughetto soon came into Toni’s shop asking for the special bread containing flour, sugar, candied fruits, and grapes. The bread became an instant success. But rather than taking the credit himself, Ughetto gave the fame to Toni. And soon, all of Milan was asking for “Toni’s bread” or “pan ad Toni.” The true inventor of the new treat did not mind, however. He soon became one of the family - Adalgisa was his forever. With that, I give you a Panettone recipe to enjoy with your friends and family over the holidays. Buon Natale, Buone Feste, e Buon Anno! Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and Happy New Year!
Panettone Dissolve yeast in warm water.
1/2 cup raisins 5 Tbsp rum 1 (1/4-oz) package active dry yeast or 2 1/2 tsp 1 cup warm water 3 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 tsp salt 5 Tbsp granulated sugar 3 Tbsp powdered milk 5 Tbsp butter, softened 1 large egg 1/2 tsp anise extract 1/2 tsp almond extract 3 Tbsp chopped candied citron 2 Tbsp pine nuts
Next, in a bowl, combine flour, salt, sugar, powdered milk, softened butter, egg, anise, and almond extracts. Stir in the yeast mixture and knead to form soft dough. Add the drained raisins, chopped dried mixed fruit, and pine nuts. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to coat, cover, and allow to rise until doubled; about 1 1/2 hours. Then punch down; form in a greased loaf pan*, and allow to rise again; about 1 hour. Bake at 350 F for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the top is browned. Makes 1 loaf. *Or use a greased 1-pound coffee can to obtain a more traditional shape.
As the General Manager of Spezia, Riccardo loves sharing his Italian heritage with the guests of the restaurant. Riccardo will spend Christmas with his wife, Marybeth, and three sons, Dante, Berent, and Jaxon. They are all anxiously awaiting the morning of January 6th…

Achy, Tired Legs?
Is it too much holiday shopping – or varicose veins? by Donna Farris, for Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center

f tired, achy legs are slowing you down this holiday season, perhaps your Christmas wish is an end to the symptoms of varicose veins. Even though she wore support hose, Mary Devlin of Sioux Falls still ended every day with aching, swollen legs. “I just felt exhausted at the end of the day.” After about five years, she decided to give up on the support hose, and researched a solution known as endovenous ablation. It meant two, two-hour sessions – one for each leg – in a clinic setting, with no anesthesia or sedation. “The only discomfort

was the little needle pokes. I work part time so I was off for the afternoon, but I could have gone back to work. There is absolutely no down time after this procedure.” Now, she has energy in the evenings. “My legs don’t feel so heavy, tired and fatigued at the end of the day – and I don’t have to wear support hose anymore – yea!” Varicose veins are the “big roping veins” in the leg, as opposed to tiny spider veins which look more like purple lines on the skin, said Dr. Matthew Casey, interventional radiologist with Avera Veradia Vein Center. While spider veins are unsightly,
they don’t cause symptoms like varicose veins do. A common medical issue, varicose veins affect 25 percent of women and 15 percent of men. “They are most commonly related to failure of valves, which happens for no known cause. Blood doesn’t flow in the right direction – toward the heart – causing increased pressure in the veins,” Dr. Casey said. The great saphenous vein in the leg is most often affected. The condition runs in families, and is more common in people who are heavy, people who work in standing occupations, as well as in women who have had children – especially more than one.

“For more than 100 years, surgical stripping was the therapy for varicose veins,” Dr. Casey said. “The great saphenous vein was surgically removed.” Yet after enduring this painful procedure, patients still faced a high recurrence rate of 20 to 40 percent. Wearing compression stockings is therapy that is helpful for some people. However, it provides symptom management rather than a cure. “Most people don’t like to wear them,” he added. Endovenous ablation is a relatively new treatment, which has been around for about 10 years. Using either a laser or radiofrequency device, the vein is destroyed through heat during a minimally invasive, outpatient procedure. For cosmetic reasons, spider veins can be “cleaned up” on an outpatient basis using sclerotherapy, which involves injecting a small amount of chemical into the veins. “About 50 to 70 percent of them go away when we treat a field of spider veins,” Dr. Casey said. The procedure is painless other than the tiny needle sticks. “Most patients say it feels like getting stung by a mosquito.” If varicose veins exist, they have to be treated first, or the treatment for spider veins won’t be very long lasting. “It’s like mopping the floor when you have a broken pipe in the basement,” Dr. Casey said. However, not everyone who has spider veins has varicose veins. In fact, 70 percent of middleaged women have spider veins somewhere on their legs. If there is no venous insufficiency, the spider veins can be treated alone with sclerotherapy. Dr. Casey says most insurance companies consider this a cosmetic procedure. It’s important to realize that spider veins, even in a treated area, can come back in other veins. “If you’re a woman who gets spider veins, you’re going to get spider veins,” Dr. Casey said. Unlike spider veins, the underlying reason to treat varicose veins is the troublesome symptoms, and also possible complications, such as blood clots. Symptoms were exactly why Amy Moncur of Sioux Falls sought treatment for varicose veins. “My legs ached at night, making it hard to sleep.” The veins weren’t noticeable, but she could definitely feel the problem at the end of the day. Her mom and both her grandmothers had varicose veins, so Amy got it checked out, and had her legs done back to back over two days. “The procedure really was a piece of cake. There was a little tenderness with the needle sticks to numb my legs, but otherwise, it didn’t hurt at all. After the procedure, there was a little achiness and a sensation of pulling, but within a week or two, my legs felt completely normal.” Now, Amy sleeps painfree at night, although she’s on her feet much of the day. “I definitely feel so much better.” To learn more, go to www.AveraVeradia.org

he season for snow is here once again, and children will surely be having their fun making snowmen, going sledding, and throwing snowballs. Sometimes the freezing temperatures get in the way of outside play, so here are some fun snow-themed indoor crafts to enjoy with your kids.
Lantern Snow Man Materials Needed: Two white, round paper lanterns in a smaller and larger size, black and orange construction paper, black felt material, red felt material, scissors, double sided sticky tape, and safety pins.
Directions: Attach the two lanterns with the smaller one on top with double sided tape. Taking the black construction paper, cut circles out for the eyes, mouth, and buttons. Cut out an orange construction paper carrot shape for the nose and attach all of these things with the double sided tape to the lanterns. Make
sure you have enough red felt material for a nice scarf to add to the snowman. Stretch it out and cut it in half the long way. Stretch it out a little bit more, then attach the two pieces together. Use scissors to cut the edges of the red felt to make it resemble a scarf, and wrap it around the snowman’s neck. Hang or display as a fun winter decoration.

Snow Globe Materials Needed: Clean and empty clear glass jars with snug lids, hot glue gun, glitter and any other winter material you may want to include, and small toys or any items to go inside the snow globe. When deciding which items to include, make sure they are made of materials that won’t break down in water over time. Another more personalized option is to take a photo of your child and print it out on your computer. Laminate the photo and cut around it making sure you leave enough of a paper border to it stays sealed and waterproof.
Directions:
2425 S. Shirley Avenue | 362-7728
Carefully glue your item of choice to the inside of the jar lid with a hot glue gun. Remember to keep things away from the edges of the lid enough to allow it to still screw onto the jar. When the glue is dry, test out the lid by tipping it upside down and make sure none of the items fall off. Fill the jar with water and add glitter until you are satisfied with how it looks. Remember you can always add more glitter! Next, place the lid and glued contents into the jar and screw it on. Don’t add extra glue around the rim of your jar just yet, so you can be sure you won’t have to fix anything that might have happened during this process. If you prefer to add more glue around the rim of your jar and to the inside of the lid as insurance that it will stay put, be sure you are satisfied with the end result so you aren’t locked out of changing things. The next step is to flip your snow globe over, and let your kids watch it snow!

Glue three puzzle pieces evenly spaced from one another onto a small circle cut from cardboard. Next, add three more puzzle pieces on top, and center these pieces between the first three, forming a snowflake. Using white acrylic paint, paint the snowflake white and let it dry. Once dry, add glitter glue to add a sparkly effect. Create a ribbon hanger and attach with glue to the back and center of the puzzle snowflake ornament. You now have a handmade treasure to decorate your tree with for years to come.

Using large and small wagon wheels and small shells, come up with your snowflake design. Move the macaroni around until you are satisfied with your snowflake arrangement. Apply glue with a small paint brush to the edges of the pasta. Attach them together to form the design. Lay it out on wax paper and let it try completely, rotating your snowflake periodically to prevent them from sticking to the wax paper. Lay out the snowflakes on a large cardboard box and be sure to keep a space between more than one snowflake. Lightly spray paint with a glossy white paint and allow to dry. Re-apply the paint in light layers and let the snowflakes dry in between, until they are completely white in color. You may also spray the backs of the snowflakes if desired. Once the paint is dry, you can create a garland with multiple snowflakes, or attach ribbon in the shape of a loop for hanging, and you have a macaroni snowflake ornament for the tree or for a cute gift wrap accessory.

Edible Candy Penguins Toothpicks, scissors, black shoestring licorice, royal icing, 2 orange halved M&M’s, 2 small white gumdrops, 2 large white gumdrops, 2 orange halved jelly beans, and 2 halved purple Necco wafers.
Directions: Attach the small gumdrop on top of the large one, using a toothpick to hold them together. This will create the penguin’s body. Next, snap a toothpick in half and attach the two orange jelly bean halves to the body cut-side down, creating the penguin’s feet. Let the penguin stand until everything is set. Use small amounts of icing to glue on the wafers for the penguin’s wings, and the halved M&M as a beak. Snip two small pieces of shoestring licorice with scissors and attach them with the icing to make the eyes. Tie some licorice string around the penguin’s neck to make a scarf, and you have yourself a candy penguin! Let your kids have fun with the sizes and the features of the penguins to create an entire colony to display for the winter.

rom the moment that Tim and Christen Wermers knew their first child would be a girl, the creative wheels started turning in Christen’s mind. “I am crafty,” she says. “I love doing all sorts of projects, so I knew I wanted to create some things for Sophie’s room.” The theme centered around a tree and “blossomed” from there. Christen started with a sticky decal of a tree for the wall, but it just didn’t seem big enough. So, she decided to paint her own. It’s not your typical tree, though. While the color scheme of the room includes browns, greens and pinks, the “leaves” on the tree branches are actually various geometrical arrangements of circles and dots and other shapes. To the right of the tree are the words, “Rise and Shine” in a playful script. This represents Christen’s mom, who lost her battle with cancer five years ago. “This was something Mom always said to us when we were growing up,” Christen says. “It was important for me to include things in Sophie’s room to
connect her to her grandma.” Hanging on the same wall is a large framed print with Sophie’s baby picture in the center and photos of both sets of grandparents artistically added in above it. “This was a gift from friends in Chicago,” says Christen. “It was a complete surprise to us. It just showed up in the mail one day, and it matched the

room perfectly. It was the most wonderful surprise!” Draping the arm of the glider chair is a blanket made from pieces of her mom’s shirts. Christen had similar blankets made in a bigger size for her siblings, but kept some fabric to be used for a baby blanket when the day came that she had a child of her own. A bear sitting in the glider was made from one of her mom’s sweaters. On a nearby table sit two special books. One title matches the lettering on the wall - Rise and Shine – and the other is Why Grandmas Go To Heaven. Sophie’s baptismal dress that hangs on the outside of the closet door was made from the dress Christen’s mom wore to Christen and Tim’s wedding. Pictures of her mom, pieces of her jewelry and a little bear with her mom’s favorite Bible verse also add to the sentimental feel of the room. Christen added her artistic flair to the room as well, creating checkerboard framed pieces with painted squares and squares of scrapbook paper, a pretty quilted pink window valance and painted flowers in the closet. Christen attached pink and green baskets to the closet wall, with the bottom of the basket against the wall, to create additional storage shelves. “She’s a girl you know,” Christen

says smiling, “so you need lots of room for hair accessories, hats and shoes.” Sophie’s name is prominently displayed on one wall, with a large painted S and the remaining letters cut out from various scrapbook paper pieces. Christen cut up the pillow shams that came with the crib bedding and paired the fabric with some burlap to create unique rosettes to hang on the wall. “It’s fun to decorate a room, and you can create a special look without having to spend a lot of money,” says Christen. For example, she took the original knobs off the drawers of the changing table and replaced them with pink ones. Whimsical owls and birds can be found throughout the room – a painted pink bird on the “Rise and Shine” wall and another perched above the light switch, an owl-patterned lamp shade, blanket and toddler chair, paper cones in different sizes covered in owl fabric and even an adorable crocheted hat with an owl face. There isn’t a particular meaning to either the birds or the owls, Christen says. “I just like them.” (and Christen admits she got the idea for the little bird from a past etc. for her cover!) Sophie just turned one this past September, but her “Rise and Shine” room inspired by both her grandma and her mom is sure to bring her many years of happiness.

Awesome Apps for Kids
by Kristen Peterson
Alpha Writer, by Montessorium Educational $2.99 This is a truly fantastic and engaging app, created by a local couple, Bobby and June George, owners of the Baan Dek Montessori. Alpha Writer works with your child on letter sounds, reading and writing stories, identifying consonants and vowels, and reading and writing phonetically. I’ve used this app with small reading groups in my classroom and have found that it keeps kids’ attention without too many flashy features. There are dozens, if not hundreds, of apps that focus on letters and sounds. What makes this app stand out is its handling and teaching of “blends.” For example, a picture of a swimming pool will appear in the middle of the screen and a voice will say “pool.” A full alphabet plus additional letter combinations (such as oo, ea, ch, sh) is at the top of the page. Users scroll through the letters and two-letter combinations and drag the correct item to the boxes below the picture to correctly spell the word. While doing so, the voice will phonetically sound the letter or combination. The app lets children see fun pictures, hear the word sounded out, and drag each letter/combination down to spell the word while seeing and hearing the letters/combinations.
Christmas Fun, All in One Education $2.99 This Christmas app has it all for kids! You can download the free version and get a number of activities for free, but to “unlock” more options, I’d highly recommend downloading the full version for $2.99. Christmas Fun, All in One has coloring sheets, sing-along songs, Santa Dress-up, puzzles, memory games, a Santa Simon game, snowman dress up and many more interactive and festive features for kids. The primary focus of this app is games; however, it does have some basic phonics and spelling components built into some of the games within this app. What I love about this app is my 20-month old has enjoyed a number of aspects of this game, such as the music, story read-alongs, and playing peak-a-boo with the gingerbread man. At the same time, I’m eager to show my third graders this app in December, because there are a number of fun games that they too will enjoy and be challenged by, such as memory match, Santa Simon, and the puzzles.

onths before her first baby was born, Micaela Ruckert was making plans to breastfeed. As six-month-old Nyla nestles into her mother’s shoulder, the new mom explains how nursing time has become one of her favorite times of the day. She’s taking time to feed her daughter and take a few precious moments for bonding. “This is what our bodies are made to do,” Ruckert says, holding Nyla close. “It feels so good to know that I can give her exactly what she needs.”
The Perfect Food Sanford Certified Lactation Consultant Martha Pap says babies have so many reasons to drink breastmilk, the perfect food made by mom’s body for baby’s body. Pap works with new mothers to help get them off to a good start with nursing; telling them about the benefits. Breastfed babies tend to have stronger immune systems. “They don’t get sick as often and when they do get sick, they have less severe illnesses and a quicker recovery. Scientific studies have shown that breastfeeding may help prevent some other serious conditions, such as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, diabetes, cancer, obesity, asthma and allergies,” Pap says.
“Research is showing that there are so many benefits to nursing our babies that we didn’t dream of just a few years ago,” says the lactation consultant.
Great for Mom Too Moms benefit too. Pap says that some of the common positive “side effects” for a nursing mom include: • A decreased risk of osteoporosis, breast cancer and ovarian cancer. • A quicker return to pre-pregnancy weight. • Fewer trips to the doctor with a sick baby. • A release of oxytocin, a hormone which causes the uterus to contract, reducing bleeding and helping a new mom’s body heal faster. • A release of prolactin, a hormone that helps the mother’s body make milk, which helps with bonding and relation. • A delay to ovulation, helping a new mom avoid another pregnancy too soon.
The Help She Needed Ruckert, a labor and delivery nurse, knew that breastfeeding can sometimes be a challenge at first for new mothers, so she

And while she was still at the hospital, lactation consultants helped her with issues of getting her daughter latched on properly. “We’ve been very blessed that she’s a good little eater, but we were happy to have that help,” Ruckert said. “I know that it’s not always easy to figure this out at the beginning.” After Nyla returned home, Ruckert talked with a lactation consultant at her first follow-up appointment with her daughter, where the nursing expert made sure that she was getting enough ounces of milk with each feeding. She felt prepared and ready for the coming weeks, she says. “Such support can be essential to new moms,” says Pap. Families are often spread apart geographically and a new mother may not have someone who can answer questions or deal with any issues in those first essential days of nursing. “Moms are discharged after that first day or two and then

sometimes the problems can begin,” Pap said. “Anything we can do to get women off to a good start with breastfeeding will make it easier.” In the weeks after Nyla’s birth, Ruckert attended Sanford New Baby and Me classes, where she could ask questions and learn from both medical experts and the other new moms. It was valuable information to help prepare her for the plans she’d need to make to pump breastmilk for Nyla as she returned to work. “It’s not easy some days to figure out the logistics as to the best time to get it done, but I know it’s important,” says Michaela. “It’s something I’m so glad to be able to do for her.” For more information about the benefits of breastfeeding, go to http://www.sanfordhealth.org/medicalServices/ breastfeeding or call Sanford’s Childbirth Resource Center at (605) 328-7140.

Bobbi Thury—
Sharing the Power of a Wish By Adrienne McKeown
T
his time of year, children are full of wishes. The anticipation of Santa’s arrival fills their heads with visions of things much grander than sugarplums. Just ask any one of “Santa’s helpers” at the local retail locations, and they will tell you about wishes for puppies, game systems, bicycles, and more. But for some children, the opportunity to have a wish come true takes on an entirely different meaning. For kids that have been diagnosed with a life-threatening condition, Make-AWish® South Dakota plays the role of St. Nicholas throughout the year. Last year, the organization granted a record 74 wishes to children across the state, making dreams such as going on a family vacation, meeting a favorite celebrity, or receiving a new play system come true for kids who are battling serious medical conditions. Bobbi Thury has been volunteering for Make-A-Wish for more than four years and just recently joined the organization’s board of directors. We sat down with Bobbi to gain a new perspective on the power of a wish and how granting wishes can make children’s faces light up like Christmas trees.

For those who aren’t familiar with Make-A-Wish, please tell us a little bit more about it. We are a statewide organization that grants wishes for children who are faced with a medical, life-threatening condition—not necessarily a terminal condition—but children facing a lifethreatening condition. That’s an important distinction because the child doesn’t actually have to be dying to have a wish granted, and I think that’s a common misconception about our organization. For us, the essence is really granting a wish—a

dream come true for this child—and I think it really comes down to the power of a wish. It’s more than just a vacation or a shopping spree or meeting someone. It really embodies the hope and strength and joy for that child. When you’re on the wish teams and you go out there and meet the family and the child, that’s what it’s about—seeing that joy and giving them something to look forward to. That child has faced adversity, and that family has faced adversity. Having a wish come true allows them just to live and be a child and a family.

How does a child become a wish child? Are there criteria in addition to the child’s medical condition? Essentially, a child has to be referred by a medical professional, a parent or a guardian, or the child can refer him or herself. Then the child’s doctor will assess if the condition is life-threatening. Also, the child has to be between the ages of 2 1/2 and 18. That’s really about it.
So once they are chosen to have a wish granted, what happens?
Soap of the Season
Our luxuriously moisturizing almond milk soap with a holiday twist.
Once approved, a wish granting team will go out and meet with the child and the family. A lot of times you go out to meet that child and they know exactly what they want. And sometimes they don’t. Sometimes it’s really a process of getting to that dream, determining what they really want to do. It’s fun to be a part of that. Once we determine the child’s wish, we get information from the family to make sure what the child wished for is really his or her heartfelt wish and not something that’s just a whim that day. Our goal is to make it special and make sure it’s what he or she really wants. So we do our due diligence to make sure we understand what that heartfelt dream is.
How did you come to be involved with Make-A-Wish? I wanted to give back to my community and to find an organization I was passionate about. Time is precious, and I needed an organization that was worthy of my time and effort, and Make-A-Wish was it. It strikes a chord with my heart because it embodies the human spirit. These kids are facing such adversity. To see their faces light up when they come back from their trips or have their wishes granted—it’s just amazing. I think it really has a lot of power to it and it does raise them up and raise up their families, and it’s really special to be a part of. I’ve also helped with the fundraising, like helping out at the Christmas light display at the Western Mall. It’s a simple thing that my husband and I can do in the evening—go volunteer a couple hours of our time and raise some money for kids’ wishes. Being a part of the wish team is really rewarding, but I also understand that it takes money to make those wishes come true.

I think every time it becomes a part of your heart. Any time a human being is sharing their dreams with you—regardless of age—it’s so special. One that stands out, though, was a young lady who was actually a volunteer herself. She knew exactly what she wanted, and it was to meet the cast of CSI: Miami. This was a very, very special kid. A lot of times you go to meet the kids, and it’s just so interesting because each kid is their
own person. I was in awe of her. I would think, “Look at all she is doing, and I feel like I should be doing so much more!” She was so inspiring — to be going through this situation, and yet here she is, volunteering at other organizations. It was just an eye-opening experience.
What a unique wish! So you were able to make that happen? Yes! There were a couple particular characters she wanted to meet, and we were able to make that happen. She had a huge interest in forensics and could talk about every episode. She was really fun.
Is that the most unique wish you’re aware of being granted? Well, we’ve had a wish to go skydiving! But then we’ve also had a child from another Make-A-Wish chapter who wanted to come to South Dakota to have a birthday party with their family who lived near Mitchell. So we helped with that. I think it’s a testament to having each particular child’s wish come true. 301 West 43rd Street, Sioux Falls, SD 605.335.1905 classicimportrepair.net
What is the most common wish that kids have? Probably to meet Mickey or Minnie at Disney World. And while the wish is common, the experience is different for each. Disney is great to work with, and they really make it special for each child.
Screening. Knowledge. Scheduling.
How can people support Make-A-Wish? With the holidays coming up, we have the Christmas at the Western Mall event. It’s a fabulous light show that runs every evening through January 1st. We’re also always looking for volunteers and friends of Make-A-Wish. There are so many ways to give — our Driving for Dreams program, Wheels for Wishes, Adopt-A-Wish, or donating airline miles. We also have events like Hot Harley Nights in Sioux Falls, but there are also events all across the state. Coming up, we also have the Champagne Ball on New Year’s Eve which will be held at the Icon Lounge. There are so many ways to support wishes!
In the spirit of Christmas and wishes, what is your Christmas wish this year? In the spirit of Make-A-Wish, I think it would be to just see our friendships grow in the community and to help more kids and make their wishes come true. For me, there’s really no greater thing we can do as humans than to nourish that human spirit. It’s absolutely amazing. For more information about Make-A-Wish South Dakota, visit their website at www.southdakota.wish.org or contact Paul Krueger, President & CEO, at (605) 335-8000.

Puppies or Kittens for Christmas? by Dick Rogen, DVM
I
am not a big fan of giving a puppy, kitten or other pet as a Christmas gift. My first year as a Veterinarian, in Boise, Idaho, is mostly to blame. The clinic where I practiced also had a large pet store attached to it. Last minute shoppers on Christmas Eve were disappointed to find all the young pets gone, except for a few Guinea Pigs. With good intentions, people settled on purchasing the Guinea Pigs. It has always bothered me, what happened to those tiny little creatures. A little puppy named Rascal changed my thinking on this. I had taken care of Brutus, a little grey poodle for several years. He was a well-loved, mostly spoiled little guy that lived long enough to have a bad heart. Brutus had congestive heart failure. He took his medications well, never had stress and knew his way to the clinic. Like most patients, they have good days and bad days. Eventually despite medicines, the heart simply was too weak to go any farther. That was a hard day when he passed away. There were a lot of tears, and lots of sadness and emptiness after he was gone. But, we did everything that we could, and he certainly was loved. It is always hard to lose your friend and companion. The words, “ We’ll never have another pet...it is just too hard to lose them,” are common to hear. When I ran into his faithful humans a few days later, they just didn’t have their normal energy. Brutus had been a good spark in their daily life. Then came Rascal. According to history, he showed up inside

a Santa hat. He was so small when I first saw him, that he fit in my hand. He was full of wiggles and energy. Their children had gotten him for Christmas. I don’t know if they felt they were up to the task of raising a new puppy or not. Would he fill the shoes of their old friend? That was going to be a tough task to measure up against. I am happy to say that Rascal has made his own path into many hearts. He is energetic, demanding and yes, very loving. More importantly, he has provided laughter and companionship to pet-loving people. It seems once you’re a pet person, it is very difficult to live without that relationship. The love and energy they bring is needed in our world. Now, I am not telling everyone to go out and get a puppy or kitten for Christmas. It is important that the people receiving the pet are ready and able to care for it. I recommend giving a kennel, toy or treat on Christmas Day and then pick up the pet the following day. It is a safer time to bring in a new baby. I cannot think of a better present to receive than love and companionship. Christmas is a wonderful time of the year. Enjoy your family, spoil your pets and do not forget the true reason for this wonderful holiday. Merry Christmas! Horizon Pet Care 1224 East Holly Boulevard Brandon, SD 57005, (605) 582-8445

olumbus College began in 1909 in Chamberlain, SD, and operated there for 12 years. With the inspiration of Bishop Thomas O’Gorman, the all-male prep school, high school, and college were moved to Sioux Falls and reopened in September 1921. Sixty acres were purchased at this location, and a dormitory, classrooms, and other buildings were constructed in the Collegiate Gothic architectural style. It was said the college was intended to become the “Notre Dame of the Midwest.” The curriculum included liberal arts, five foreign languages, commercial courses, and four preprofessional majors. Many graduates went on to Catholic seminaries. Athletic teams, nicknamed the “Mariners,” ruled the South Dakota Intercollegiate Conference. In 1926 its teams were league champions in all three major sports: football, basketball and track. Columbus College, an early victim of the Great Depression, closed in 1929. The original buildings remain as part of the 1949 Royal C. Johnson Veterans Memorial Hospital. Dedicated in 2000 by the Minnehaha County Historical Society.
